NOR’WEST NEWS Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Thursday July 16 2020 3 News Skate park to get extension BEGINNERS WILL be able to join in the fun following a decision to extend the St Albans skate park. The Papanui-Innes Community Board has approved the extension following feedback from local residents concerned that the park does not cater to beginner skateboarders and scooter users. The extension at St Albans Park will utilise the current gravel area, with work expected to start on the landscape plan in October. The local community, St Albans School and skate jam participants have all contributed Emma Norrish design ideas. Community board chairwoman Emma Norrish said there has been a great deal of community support for the change, with many people wanting additional skate elements to help beginners improve their skills. “We can see the positive role that skateboarding can play in community unity,” said Ms Norrish. “Skateboarding is very much a mainstream urban sport today, UPGRADE: A proposal to revamp the St Albans skate park has been approved. The park will now cater for beginner riders. PHOTO: NEWSLINE helping to keep young people healthy and active while also encouraging creativity and boosting confidence. “We have collaborated with our community to better meet local needs and deliver an accessible skate park that suits all ages and our diverse neighbourhood. “By creating a skater-friendly area and ensuring that other park users also have suitable space, St Albans Park can be enjoyed by the whole community.” Following changes to the initial concept plan, two walnut trees will be moved to a more suitable area while proposed seating will be shifted near a shady section where people can still watch the skate park users. A low pyramid, wollie ledge and rectangular grind rail will replace the skate area’s double rollover bumps while a cork-type surface laid behind the quarter pipe over the mound will protect the skate area from gravel. A small barrier section at the top of the hipped quarter pipe will also protect pedestrians using the nearby path. The extension will be completed by April next year. Board lays out priorities for north-west • From page 1 Another priority for the board is the installation of bins at high usage parks such as Abberley Park, Bishopdale Park and Avonhead Park. “Over-flowing rubbish bins in our parks is a constant issue. The solar-powered Big Belly bins have a built-in compactor that crushes the rubbish, giving them a capacity six times greater than a standard waste bin,” the plan reads. The board also plans to increase improved access to on-street parking for residents in Russley and Roydvale after regularly receiving complaints from the community around a lack of parking. Other priorities include the demolition of Old Caretaker’s House at Burnside Park, an upgrade or replacement of the public toilets at Bishopdale Mall, construction of a shared footpath on Gardiners Rd from Wilkinsons Rd to Sawyers Arm Rd and an upgrade of the toilets and changing facilities at Nunweek Park. Fixing the water flow issues with the Ilam stream, an upgrade of playing fields at Tulett Park and investigation into the possible usage of land next to it have also been cited as priorities. The withdrawal of a consent application to store 40,000 bales of waste, including domestic rubbish and commercial rubbish from hospitals and schools, on a site in Belfast close to houses, a large aquifer and a stream, a meat works and a cemetery, is great news for our community. The announcement, made at the end of last month, has brought huge relief to residents, who were concerned about odour, vermin and leaching from the proposed site in Blakes Road. In March, residents packed out the Belfast Rugby Football Club at my public meeting to voice their concerns to Environment Canterbury. ECan set up a live webpage on their website to keep residents updated. The news last month that the project won’t go ahead on the Belfast site has been welcomed by the community. I’ve been contacted by Northern Christchurch residents who are concerned about the lack of a footpath and cycleway to allow them to safely access shops and public transport in Belfast. With traffic travelling in excess of 80 kilometres per hour, they’re worried about walking alongside the road. I regularly connect with the Belfast Community Network, which provides a great community hub, working with local groups and volunteers to provide a wide range of support for residents.
