KATA KATA
CARTOON MAGAZINE
Kata Kata is an authentic African cartoon
magazine with both online and printed versions.
In a humorous way, Kata Kata tries to discuss and
sensitize typical African / global socio - political
issues, mainly through illustrations, animations etc.
Furthermore, through its social network (Kata Kata
Community), it tries to keep those cultural entities
alive by stimulating personal interactions and
exchange of ideas amongst the readers.
At the same time, Kata Kata equally offers a maxim
that life is perhaps not all about seriousness. One
needs some laughs and relaxation to face serious
challenges in life.
The duality of Kata Kata is such that it tries to discuss
serious issues, at the same time, it offers a therapy for
the problems through laughter.
The quarterly printed edition of Kata Kata is widely
available in the Netherlands and some countries
in Europe. Equally, the digital version of Kata Kata
can also be read online or subscribed to via Kata
Kata website or Magzter, the world’s largest digital

Knowing The Right Time To Act
Religion And Semantics
Imagine. Imagine a car without a driver. Or without a break. In both cases, the
result can be terrible – and perhaps, fatal, to be honest.
Clearly, life is a journey that requires clarity and a sense of direction and purpose.
That calls for knowledge of the route to your destination and where and when to
draw a line. Leaders are not born, but rather made through hard work, sacrifices,
principles, conduct, ethics, motivation, persistence and ability to make the
right choices and decisions, based on the needs of those you lead, which bear
the desirable fruit of success and create a positive impact in the lives of others.
Leadership is, therefore, not necessarily about searching for consensus but, in
fact, moulding the consensus.
Your intention as a leader is not to be recognised, but to be remembered by
the footprint you have left behind through your actions. In order to leave that
necessary imprint, you must get people from where they are to where they are
supposed to be or where they have not been. As a leader, you must be able to
translate the vision of those you lead into reality. You can only achieve this by
first believing in those you lead and having the conviction that they desire better.
By valuing your subjects, you are simultaneously adding value to them.

In reality, leadership is not about control, but rather the ability to make sacrifices,
right decisions and to know when to say yes or no. This way, you automatically
produce more leaders – not followers – after you. Effective leadership is,
therefore, judged by the results, achieved through sacrifices and definitely, not
attributes. With this in mind, you could say that success – whether as a person,
leader, or a group has a unique price tag attached to it, which can only be
achieved through making the right decisions. The question, of course, is: Are
you willing to pay the price in order to achieve that success? Will the greed be an
obstacle towards achieving your goal? How about honesty, hard work, endurance,
integrity?
Back in Africa, leaders have unfortunately failed to set a standard or border.
Nor do they know where or when to change their directions. The result is that
they keep on making the same mistakes that have kept them and the continent
perpetually saddled in the socio-political and economic web. It is, definitely, not
bad to make mistakes, but it is unacceptable not to learn from those mistakes.
Unless you are bold – and indeed smart – enough to look back at your failures,
bad experiences, mistakes and accept that they are in fact a positive teacher –
and if you wish, a classroom – you learn from and make corrections in life, you
hardly can make a tangible progress and success in your life and that of others
around you – including those you lead.
The Kata Kata Village tries not to repeat the mistakes of many African leaders.
Yes, Agama may have made wrong choices in life, but this time, he knows exactly
the right time to leave – especially when the danger is imminent. Are African
leaders listening? Can they borrow a leaf from Agama? Oh, I heard Agama
has boastfully told the Kata Kata Village Assembly that African leaders are
remorsefully on the way to the Kata Kata Village to ask for his advice - despite
flaws in his character. Trust Agama!

Depression:
Clear Signs

By Tumwine Edward
Depression is eating away
many people today, as
well as causing enormous
social, financial and medical
repercussions to the society.
Globally, a lot of suicide deaths
stemming from depression have
been registered over the past
two years. Clearly, depression is
not limited to the poor; affluent
and rich people, including
celebrities, are not immune to
depression. Notably prominent
celebrities, from Mac Miller,
Avicci, Chester Bennington to
Robin Williams, have fallen
victims to depression.
Depression is a mood disorder
characterized by persistently low mood
and a feeling of sadness and loss of
interest. According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), depression is the
most common illness worldwide and the
leading cause of disability. They estimate
that 350 million people are affected by
depression, globally.

Symptoms of depression can include:
depressed mood, reduced interest or
pleasure in activities previously enjoyed,
loss of sexual desire, unintentional
weight loss (without dieting) or lower
appetite, Insomnia (difficulty sleeping) or
hypersomnia (excessive sleeping).
Despite that depression is a global illness,
it is ironically one of the most ignored
ailments. It is, therefore, no wonder why
depression continues to drain many
people away. Confiding in people isn’t
everyone’s biggest strength and this is one
of the easiest ways you can battle through
depression. It takes a certain amount
of courage and self-devotion for one to
realize they are depressed and need to
speak to somebody preferably a specialist
before it’s too late.
What makes depression extremely
dangerous is the likelihood of it
developing into other chronic behaviour.
Depression could have adverse effects
on people, like resorting to drastic drug
use or self-harm, including, but not

body. Diagnosis of depression starts with

PICKING
ight
THE
ShoeBy Tumwine Edward
Once you pick the right shoe,
it is always easy to pick
the right shirt and trouser
to it because it is naturally
embedded in what style of
shoe you are wearing.
Old fashion legends have it that a shoe
accentuates one’s style like no other. The
choice of shoe one puts on determines
how elegant and smart they are viewed
by whoever meets them. It can’t be
underestimated how important it is
for your shoes to match your outfit
because it definitely compliments
your style and level of confidence as a
person. Identifying the right shoe isn’t
everyone’s cup of tea and that’s why I am
here to offer some good tips on how you
can finesse the ‘shoe game.’
The first and most vital component
when picking a shoe is the comfort.
Never settle for a shoe that’s going to
make your feet cringe, however stylish
and colorful it may look. Comfort
is primary when picking shoes and
without this, it is as good as useless
because your face can only hide
discomfort for a short while and it
can also lead to foot illnesses due to
irregular toe positioning.
14 Kata kata cartoon magazine Issue 20 DEC 2018 www.katakata.org
A good shoe should make your
whole outfit stand out. The
quality of a good shoe is that
it makes the outfit even stand
out more, leaving you with less
work to do on the outfit. Once
you pick the right shoe, it is
always easy to pick the right shirt
and trouser to it because it is
naturally embedded in what style
of shoe you are wearing. It is very
easy to get carried away by your
outfit and neglect the shoe, but
this is a blunder you don’t want
to commit in this era, especially,
with so many photographers and
fashion police everywhere.
One more component is knowing
the occasion you are headed for. It’s
important to give the right details to
whatever function you are attending,
in line with shoe style. Don’t show
up to a wedding in a suit and a
pair of Reebok sneakers, however
classy they may look and pretend
everything is okay! Wear appropriate
shoes for occasions you are attending
and see how effortless your outfit
will look by just paying attention to
details. Just match your style, outfit,
and occasion with the right shoe and
you are good to go. You may thank
me later.

Choosing The
am super stoked about glasses because I
have owned a pair since I was 3 years old.
Owning and picking glasses (spectacles) can
go a long way in enhancing your outlook. Wearing
them from a tender age made me develop a certain
kind of keenness on the pair I select to grace my
eyes. Picking a comfortable pair of glasses really
helps you go about your daily routines with much
ease because if you are skeptical with how your eyes
appear, it will definitely rub off not only with your
body language; equally perfect glasses have positive
effects on your eyes and ultimately your health.
It’s often challenging to find the perfect fit the first
time, but you gradually grow into how much it
means to have the right pair as you keep getting
others. Just like fine wine, glasses really know
how to age well on someone and become a part
of who they are. So that’s why it’s actually quite
important to make a good choice when getting a

fundamental because some lenses

shapes that may not suit your
taste, but when it comes down
to such decisions I am sure your
conscience will lead you to the
right place of the better decision.
Your glasses could influence others’
perception of you.
You can’t deny the confidence that most people who
wear glasses exhume when they move around. It’s
extremely important to always take extra caution
on the safety and maintenance of your glasses. They
come at a good cost, so it’s essential they are kept
clean and neat and carefully placed to prevent the
lenses from getting scratched.
Having a pair of glasses is not all. It is equally
very advisable to go for regular eye checkups to
determine the state of your eyes and see whether
you require a different lens in order to prevent your
eyes from getting further strained.
There you go; go out there and let your glasses do
the talking!

Bathroom
“It is very

The ambience of your bathroom sets out how
relaxed and calm your bathing experience will be.
It is very important for your bathroom to ooze a
very relaxing atmosphere because some of the most
brilliant ideas have come from bathing sessions;
so you need to start giving your bathroom the
treatment it deserves.
Bathroom décor doesn’t come off easy because it
requires a special blend of colours and features, to
set the tone you want. Colours could be based on
personality, especially with how expressive you are.
However, since bathrooms are generally a place for
relaxation, it is not strange that there are typical
colours, known universally to give a calming and
relaxing effect in the bathroom. It’s not too often to
find a lot of detail on a bathroom set up, but trust
me, once you put your time and resources into it, it
will have a gradual positive effect on your thought
processes and decision making.
The way you align your bathroom essential
enhances how your design is set up. Separation
of toiletries, towels and bathing soaps by giving
them distinguished location makes it easier to find
whatever you are looking for. It’s important to know
where to find exactly what you are looking for
because that eases work on the brain and helps you
locate whatever you are looking for once you are in
the bathroom. The minute everything is displaced
or all over the place, it’s going to create tense vibes
and create a strenuous ambience. If at the end of

the day, you can’t unwind and let loose in
your bathroom, then you are definitely not
doing something right.
Lighting and scenting are also very
essential for bathroom design. It’s
important the lighting illuminates a
specific mood as soon as you enter the
bathroom, accompanied by the scent
from the candles- if using any. Bathroom
scents help to create a vibe because when
you are in there, it’s important you are
mentally, physically and emotionally
relaxed. So the right scent and light are
the perfect ingredients for that kind of
situation. Some people only prefer candles
in their bathrooms to create a romantic
kind of feeling and this usually goes hand
in hand with roses to give it that complete
romantic ambience. Whatever, it is you
are looking out for while setting up your
bathroom, the one thing is sure: the design
sets a precedent of your mood while in the
bathroom.

TECHNOLOGY
The Upcoming Samsung Galaxy X
Could Be RevolutionaryBy Tumwine Edward
Samsung is set to take another technological milestone by making the first foldable
smartphone (Samsung Galaxy X). It could be a game changer, considering how far we have
come with mobile phones.
Samsung mobile CEO D.J. Koh
recently shed some light on
the project, noting that it would
essentially take the form of a
tablet with multi-tasking features
that would then fold up into a
more portable phone.
Samsung foldable phone concept.
The new foldable phone looks to
set a precedent for the shape of
technology in the coming years, as
seen with the flip phones, sliders,
and touchscreens. Samsung mobile
CEO D.J. Koh recently shed some
light on the project, noting that it
would essentially take the form of
a tablet with multi-tasking features
that would then fold up into a more
portable phone. Mr. Koh also said
the phone wouldn’t be a gimmick
and will be available globally when
it is launched, unlike their previous
products, which were available
only in South Korea during their
launch.
Sources close to the production
of the new product, say the device
features a screen that measures
about 7 inches diagonally and can be
folded in half like a wallet. When the
phone is folded, the outside shows a
small display bar on one side and the
other side holds the cameras.
It’s interesting to see how Apple
will react to this unique innovation,
given the very stiff competition
between the giant phone companies.
They often go toe to toe when it
comes to phone upgrades, and
we wait to see if Apple will make
something similar or take a different
direction altogether.
The Samsung foldable phone could see it take the
form of a tablet that would then fold up into a more
portable phone.
20 Kata kata cartoon magazine Issue 20 DEC 2018 www.katakata.org
Reports suggest that the Galaxy X
will be released before the end of
2018. In an interview with CNBC, the
CEO of Samsung disclosed that their
latest product may be shown off in
November at the Samsung Developer
Conference in San Francisco. We
wait to see how this new marvel of
technology will set the industry,
considering Samsung’s track record of
innovative software and gadgets that
have laid a mark in the tech sector.
Definitely, with all the new mobile
gadgets pouring into the market of
recent, it is not entirely wrong to say
that mobile technology has effectively
influenced both our lives and the
human relationship, to the extent that
our relationship with the gadgets as
well as human beings, for the matter,
can hardly be the same.

My experience might not be
something new to many kids
out there, but I believe sharing my
experience could help other kids face
their tormentors and probably find a
solution to this well-known problem
at school.
Some years ago, when I was 6 years,
I was bullied by a group of children
to the extent that I considered
stopping going to school. Initially, it
started with a boy, who always tried
to provoke me. However, I and my
siblings’ were brought up not to fight.
So I tried all I could not fight back my
tormentor. I thought that would make
him stop, but that encouraged him
instead.
This time around, he would not only
do all kinds of irritating things to
me, he now would do so with his
other friends too, one of them a
girl. Because they were many, I was
afraid to challenge them. In fact,
they warned me that they would deal
with me if I would report them to my
parents or teacher. It was a nightmare
for me, until one day I was so scared
to go to school to the extent that
my father noticed it and insisted I
must tell him what the problem was.
Initially, I was afraid to talk. After my
father threatened to punish me if I
refused to talk, I told him the whole
truth. He made it clear to me that it
was not my fault and that he would
make sure the bullying would stop.
My father reported the case to my
teacher and insisted that the boys
and girl who were mistreating me
must be punished. The teacher
punished the aggressors and told me
never to be afraid of them again. She
also insisted:
• I must report to her whenever any
other child tried to bully me.
• To always make it clear to whoever
wanted to bully me that I would not
accept his or her behaviour.
• Set a boundary and make sure to
tell my aggressor he/she must stop the
behaviour immediately.
• Act with confidence and
assertiveness because, according to my
teacher, people who bully others often
target those they consider weak.
• Look the persons who wanted to
bully me straight in the eyes, while I
talked to them without fear, but with
authority.
• In most cases, kids who hurt others
do so secretly so that they cannot be
seen or caught. “You must expose their
activities. You could do this either by
yelling and speaking up loudly. By so
doing, others will discover their acts.”
My teacher told me.
• Don’t accept bad names. If kids call
you names you don’t like, warn them
to stop doing so; if they continue,
report them to the teacher.
• If you fail to get the attention of
the teacher and all fails, fighting back
is a last resort when it is obvious you
are about to be harmed. Do not hit
your aggressor first, but if they hit you
first, hit back with confidence and
report to the teacher whenever you
can.
I hope these strategies help you to
avoid being bullied at school.

Bali is an Indonesian Island known for its forested volcanic
mountains, iconic rice paddies, beaches, and coral reefs.
The Intimidating
Beautiful Island
By Tumwine Edward
The island is home to religious
sites such as Cliffside Temple.
To the south, the beachside
city of Kuta has lively bars, while
Seminyak, Sanur, and Nusa are
popular resort towns. The island
is also known for its yoga and
meditation retreats.
The southern tip is also worldrenowned
for its prime surfing spots
such as Padang and Uluwatu. Further
inland is Ubud, a hill town known
for its spa treatments, yoga, and
ecotourism, which may include a trip
to a monkey preserve.
Ringing the island are coral reefs
teeming with sea life, making it a
hot spot for scuba diving. You can
also get a taste of Balinese culture at
a gamelan percussion performance
or one of the thousands of Hindu
temples, which feature intricate
sculpture and regular festivals.

Tanah Lot temple
Tanah Lot is the island’s most iconic temple. It’s
perched on top of a huge rock, and surrounded
by the sea with waves constantly crashing
into its base. As among Bali’s most important
sea temples, Tanah Lot pays homage to the
guardian spirits of the sea and serves as the
foreground to the most picturesque sunsets.
If you are looking for somewhere romantic to
take your mind off all the world’s stress, this is
definitely for you.

Aunt Silvia
Dear Aunt Sylvia,
I am a 51-year old lady married to an
educated man with three adorable children.
Both my husband and I are working and
I would say, we are financially ok. Some
years ago, my husband became sick and
he was advised by the doctor to work
less. That drastically changed our income
situation and made me earn more than my
husband. Recently, I noticed that he is not
the same man he used to be. He gets irritated
easily and often accuses me of insulting and
disrespecting him. The reality is that I’ve
always tried to make my husband happy, but
it seems my efforts are not enough. Sadly,
the quarrel has reached a point that I fear
it could cost us our marriage. Please help me
out.

QUOTES
“Some of the
biggest challenges in
relationships come
from the fact
that most people
enter a relationship
in order to get
something: they’re
trying to find
someone who’s
going to make
them feel good. In
reality, the only
way a relationship
will last is if

relationship as a

to give, and not a
place that you go
to take.”

Dear Monica,
Thank you for your mail. I feel so sorry to
hear that your marriage is heading to the
rock, simply because you earn more than
your husband. Although, I must admit that
your story is not new or a surprise. Sadly,
we all seem to forget the vow we made
during the wedding: for better, for worse.
As a couple, you are supposed to work
together as a team; unfortunately, some
men have culturally, allowed psychology of
gender to block their reality of life. It is a
good wife that wants to share her income
with the rest of the family, rather than
insisting that the husband is the “head
of the family,” as such, must bear all the
financial burdens on the family. Why can’t
your husband see this obvious reality and
praise your efforts?
That said, I am not there in your family
to verify your husband’s claims about you;
if your behaviour has suddenly changed
and you have become bossy simply due
to the new economic situation, which
favours you, then, your husband has a
point – and ground to complain. I assume
there were no major family problems
when your husband was earning more
than you. That shows he wants the best
for his family. I would seriously advise
you to make sure your new financial
advantage does not come with pride or
disrespect for your husband. On the other
hand, I strongly request your husband
to show appreciations to you for your
financial contribution. Equally, it is not
new to know that many African men have
problems when their wives earn more
than they do. In most cases, based on

that inferiority complex or inherit cultural
trends and gender consciousness, many
men tend to read unnecessary meanings to
or create wrong interpretations of innocent
actions of their wives, simply because their
wives are financially better than them.
This leads to friction in the marriage or
relationship.
I advise you to make sure your new
financial situation does not change your
attitude, duties in the family. Equally, your
husband must appreciate your contribution
and make sure his new situation does not
influence his judgement of you and your
actions. I hope you both find a common
ground and enjoy your marriage. Good
luck.
Yours,
Aunt Sylvia
