KATA KATA

CARTOON MAGAZINE

Kata Kata is an authentic African cartoon

magazine with both online and printed versions.

In a humorous way, Kata Kata tries to discuss and

sensitize typical African / global socio - political

issues, mainly through illustrations, animations etc.

Furthermore, through its social network (Kata Kata

Community), it tries to keep those cultural entities

alive by stimulating personal interactions and

exchange of ideas amongst the readers.

At the same time, Kata Kata equally offers a maxim

that life is perhaps not all about seriousness. One

needs some laughs and relaxation to face serious

challenges in life.

The duality of Kata Kata is such that it tries to discuss

serious issues, at the same time, it offers a therapy for

the problems through laughter.

The quarterly printed edition of Kata Kata is widely

available in the Netherlands and some countries

in Europe. Equally, the digital version of Kata Kata

can also be read online or subscribed to via Kata

Kata website or Magzter, the world’s largest digital

Cyber bullying

Religion And Semantics

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the

oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you

are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” Desmond Tutu

One may call the above quote from Archbishop Desmond Tutu a warning,

but it sounds more than that. It equally captures the lingering - and often neglected

- social problems facing the world today, especially African countries,

which the human rights icon has often criticized. Technological advancement

has come with its downsides in many countries; amongst the flaws, cyberbullying

has rather grown astronomically with the development of modern technology.

Rather than using social media to engage in self-promotion and direct

interaction with friends, family, and the public, it has been turned rather into

a pugnacious platform for bullying, harassing and intimidating of other users.

What makes cyberbullying so dangerous is the fact that in most cases, the

incidents are hardly reported. Some victims are bullied into being afraid to

report the cases. Often when the unacceptable violence is reported, law enforcement

agencies hardly take quick and appropriate steps needed to resolve

the aggression and stop it from happening again or getting out of hand. Worse

still, some victims even feel ashamed to expose the terror. Result? Intimidation

and harassment continue. This social behaviour must stop!

The most challenging question is how exactly have we as government, organisations,

individuals responded to this unacceptable asocial threat? Sadly, not

as much as we ought to have reacted. Definitely, if we keep quiet or become

nonchalant when others are being bullied, we become bully ourselves. We,

therefore, must speak up. How many of us do? If you are noncommittal in the

face of oppression, you become an oppressor yourself.

The time has come for all of us – irrespective of our gender – to wake from our

long slumber and take collective and decisive action against cyberbullying.

The first step we must take to achieve this task is by creating awareness on

different levels.

Using the same platform where cyberbullying takes place, we at Kata Kata

have provided an online platform to showcase the online magazine fully dedicated

to end cyber harassment. The link will be available on the campaign

social media platforms. We shall also print thousands of copies and flyers that

will be disseminated in various places such as bookstores, supermarkets, and

churches for the benefit of all users.

Kata Kata has the intention to still use the cyberspaces such as the website,

Facebook and Twitter to communicate change and therefore, I would like to

call on more partners and individuals to embrace the campaign.

Likewise, we look forward to a mutual collaboration with other different organisations

to combat other social problems. Together, we can fight and defeat

social ills. Let us start today!

Health

Adolescents’

Health

In Jeopardy

By Tedman Oscar

According to the United

Nations Children’s Funds

(UNICEF), adolescents form about 16

per cent of the world population.

These are people between 10-19

years going through a transition

from childhood to adulthood.

Copious things occur at this

stage of their life development,

especially negative ones, which

can be detrimental to their health.

Adolescents are perceived as

adults who are capable of taking

care of themselves, but the truth is

this group of people needs much

attention and care, given that it is

in this stage where one ravages or

builds their future life. Often, any

wrong decision in the life of an

adolescent can have great impacts

later in their life. Some adults are

going through chronic health issues due

to the wrong decisions they made during

adolescence. World Health Organization

(WHO) 2017 report indicates that over

1.1 million adolescents succumbed

to curable diseases and preventable

situations. The study further states that

over 3,000 die daily because of risky

health behaviours.

As they undergo rapid changes,

adolescents are likely to experiment and

explore many issues in life, some of

which have negative effects on their adult

lives and even sometimes, generations to

come. The majority get easily influenced

by cultural, environmental and social

factors which bring a conclusion that a

higher percentage of the problems they

go through is more psychological rather

than biological.

According to scholar James Coleman

(1961) adolescents focus more on music,

sports, fashions, dating, plus other areas

of interest. This is a stage marred with

self-identity crisis. The young ones

crave for fame and would do anything

to achieve popularity among their peers.

That includes smoking tobacco, taking

alcohol and engaging in unprotected sex.

Several adolescents also compromise

their life principles to be part of a group,

thereby, pushing them to life threats.

The World Health Organization (WHO)

has compiled a list of hazardous health

issues facing our young ones; in most

cases, these issues can be controlled

when proper measures are put into place

and implemented, especially by the

parents/guardians or governments.

The health concerns include:

1. Violence. Adolescents can be

violent and could easily engage in

interpersonal violence, caused by a

lack of self-control, which may lead

to loss of lives. This problem is often

prominent in poor countries.

2. HIV/AIDS. During adolescence,

there is an attempt to engage in

unprotected sex, which may lead to

HIV/AIDS infection. Sadly, many

lives have been lost across the world,

and more specifically in Africa, where

the pandemic has caused irreplaceable

health and social damages.

3. Injuries. Some young people drive

while drunk while over speeding can

be a norm amongst adolescents. This

asocial behaviour can lead to serious

road accidents are other major injuries

and disabilities amongst the culprits

and other innocent victims. The danger

is alarming in countries with laxity in

enforcement of traffic rules.

4. Drowning is another major problem

among adolescents. Research shows that

almost 303,000 got drowned in 2016

worldwide, amongst the victims, the

majority of them are boys.

5. Mental health. The rise in the rate of

depression has seriously influenced the

mental growth of teens. Environmental

stress and a deep feeling of worthlessness

over their families, grades, social status

with peers and sex orientation are

deemed as some causes of depression.

Unhappiness at times leads to suicide.

6. Alcohol and Drugs. Use of harmful

drugs subject adolescents to unsafe

behaviours, careless driving, and

violence.

7. Early pregnancy. Unprotected sex

can lead to early pregnancy, which

may halt girl or child education, hence

interfering with their future. Due to

the ripe age of the girls, they may also

develop adverse health complications

during birth, which may lead to death

or lifetime health problem.

8. Undernutrition and obesity.

During adolescence girls and boys often eat

junk and unhealthy food. Unhealthy food

consumption or inability to eat adequate

food could lead to diseases and obesity.

6 Kata kata cartoon magazine Issue 23 2019 www.katakata.org

Parents and guardians play crucial roles in their

children’s lives. They are responsible for showing their

adolescences the right path to follow. This role they can

play, by taking bold steps to shield the kids from health

problems. In fulfilling this important task, parents and

guardians need to take a collaborative approach instead

of authoritative when dealing with adolescents.

Having in mind that many adolescents are unaware of

the dangers associated with their unwanted behaviours,

the WHO has established Global Standards for quality

health care service aimed at helping adolescents to

take care of their lives during this dangerous period.

That includes community support, adolescent health

literacy, and adolescence participation. Others are

provider’s competencies, facility characteristics, equity

and non-discrimination and standard Data and quality

improvement.

To minimize putting the lives of adolescences in

danger, we all must put our heads together, to achieve

a better result. That involves contributions from

adolescences, parents, guardians, government and even

non-governmental organizations. Two heads, they say,

are better than one.

Fashion

THE

ORIGIN OF

Footwear dated back

to 40,000 years

ago. It was during

that period that

people discovered

the significance of

protecting the foot

from some factors

like cold, heat, thorns

and other objects.

MODERN

SHOES

By Tedman Oscar

Unlike in the ancient days when putting

on footwear was restricted to

a specific group of people, in the

modern era we are free to choose the kind

of shoes we need based on our choices, preferences,

occasions, dress code and more so

financial status. The law favoured the nobles

and those in power, but worked against the

slaves in the past. The poor were not allowed

to wear shoes as a mark to differentiate them

from other more affluent people; similarly,

women were discouraged from putting on

heeled shoes.

The story is different today. New designs

of shoes are emerging every week. The rate

at which the information about the current

fashion trend is made available may

tempt us to think that things were the way

they are now thousands of years ago. It has

cost people effort, time, energy, funds and

sleep to ensure that we enjoy the comfort

brought by the modern fancy shoes.

Footwear dated back to 40,000 years

ago. It was during that period that people

discovered the significance of protecting

the foot from some factors like cold, heat,

thorns and other objects. Before then,

they were comfortably walking barefooted.

Primitive footwear was the first type

of shoes to be worn by people during the

pre-historical period; nonetheless, their

disadvantages outweigh their benefits.

However, the lifespan of the Primitive

footwear was shortened by the introduction

of sandals.

Sandals making began in Egypt in

1550BC and gained popularity within a

short period. Palm leaves, wooden reeds,

papyrus fiber and raw leather were the

material used to make the sandals. They

had the shape of a boat and were in different

colours to signify the social class.

Pharaoh and clerics were the first people

to don the sandals.

Later sandals gained access into China,

Greece and Rome. China’s was dubbed

Golden lotus feet since it involved chopping

off and bending toes to fit in the

shoes. The process was carried out on

individuals of the age of 5-8 and above.

The breaking or bending of toes did not

solve the problems posed by the inability

for the toes to fit in the shoes because

many toes were in the process, inflicted

with severe injuries to an extent that they

could not walk. Greek and Roman sandals

were longer than those of Egyptian’s

18 Kata kata cartoon magazine Issue 23 2019 www.katakata.org

Things took a U-turn during the industrial

Revolution following an invention of the

modern footwear sewing machine ,which led

to mass production of shoes daily. Footwear

became available to many people anytime.

Finally, the current technology has brought

tremendous growth in the shoe production

industry. Traditionally, they were made by

craftsmen, but it is now the role of a factory

industry. The modern shoes are of high quality

compared to the former ones.

leather, plastic &

rubber.

and had many laces. While in Rome shoes were

an emblem of power and civilization, the Greeks

had a different perception. They regarded them

as unnecessary and an act of a spendthrift.

Heel pointed shoes and Goodyear structure

took over from sandals and were immediately

followed by Espadrilles made from Jute Canvas

in Central Europe. Espadrille originated from

Spain, used during warm climate. Northern and

central Europe responded with an immediate

introduction of leather boots which were used

during both cold and hot season.

Different varieties of shoes include those

made of leather, plastic and rubber. Presently,

some trending shoes are a wedge heel,

ballerinas, lace-ups, canvas shoes, wellingtons,

flip flops among many others for

women and trainers. Other types such as

the black Oxfords, derby shoes, work boots

are popular amongst men.

Irrespective of the kind of shoes one wears,

their durability depends on the ability of

the owner to take good care of them.

Until the Middle-Ages there were no specific

shoes for women and man. It was difficult to

come across the ones which could fit an individual

as they were either big or small in size. There

was also no left or right foot shoe. High heels

shoes were specifically for men in the 18th century,

contrary to modern days. Heels were worn

by those in authority to symbolize supremacy.

Today, any man who attempts to put on a high

heel in the 21st century poses himself to ridicule

and name-calling, since high heel shoes are

categorically for women and ladies

Applying a gentle cleanser. Choose a suitable

cleanser in line with your skin type (dry, oily,

normal and combination). Alpha Hydroxyl

and benzoyl peroxide are the highly

recommended ones.

Using a skin toner. Toner aids in the

elimination of oils, makeup or dirt that might

have remained in the face. It also regulates

skin PH.

Applying moisturizer. Moisturizers keep the

skin from getting dry.

Drink plenty of water. Water plays a crucial

role in the body. It removes harmful products

from the body. Take at least eight glasses of

water per day.

Do regular

exercise. Physical

activities assist in

the regulation of

skin hormones

and reduction of

inflammation.

Often, beauty is

a powerful force

many - consciously

or unconsciously –

succumb to. Hardly

does anyone like to

have rough or dry

skin. A whopping

percentage of

people – especially,

ladies - do not

like their skin to

look rough or dry.

More often than

not, many women

do, at least once

in their lives, apply

makeups to make

their skin look

more attractive

and prettier.

their skin beautiful. To maintain a beautiful,

healthy skin means making sure your skin is

not a victim to various skin challenges such

as dehydration, ageing, ultraviolet sun rays,

hormonal imbalance and stress. These factors

could cause a lot of harm to your skin, amongst

them, wrinkles, dry and rough patches, pimples,

age spots, blemishes, loss of elasticity and acne.

Despite the above challenges to your skin, you

can still keep your skin healthy and attractive

by taking certain measures. The following tips

have been recommended by the dermatologist

to help keep your skin smooth and regain your

lost beauty.

Have enough sleep. After spending the

whole day working, it is recommended that you

have a 7-8 hour of sleep to revivify your body

and skin. Hear renewed American orthopaedic

Dr Carlos Guanche’s observation: “Those with

exhaustion often appear with skin that is sunken

in, dry or sallow. On the other hand, those who

rested often have less scalloping under the eyes

and in the tear troughs and have plump and

fresh–appearing skin.”

Daily skincare routine. Another important

way to make your skin smooth is to observe

daily significant habits for good results. They

are:

Improve your diet. Avoid processed and

sugary foods and alcohol, instead, take more

vitamins and fish twice a week.

Exfoliate. Exfoliation is a process of

eliminating the old dead skin cells on the skin’s

outermost layer. Since the skin renews itself

after every 28 days, this step can be done once a

month either mechanically or chemically.

Natural smooth face solutions.

One can apply a mixture of apple and vinegar,

honey and lemon, natural yoghurt and coconut

oil on their skin to make it have a good look.

Yoghurt contains lactic and protein, which

detoxify the skin and eliminates dead skin cells.

A mixture of apple and vinegar keeps the skin

cool and maintains the skin PH, whereas honey

aids in acne prevention through anti-oxidants

that it contains; and citric acid in lemon

devastates bacteria causing acne.

You could take advantage of the above

recommendation to maintain healthy and

appealing skin. However, if the measures

did not produce an expected result, do not

fail to consult your dermatologist for further

assistance. The beauty of your skin is in your

hand; it is your responsibility to take the

necessary actions needed to make your skin

beautiful.

By Tedman Oscar

Dining room plays a prominent role in the

success of any restaurant. The main idea

behind the establishment of any eatery is to

make a profit. However, the profitability depends

mostly on, apart from the food you serve, how

organized and attractive your dining area is. Comfortable

dining room motivates customers to spend

much and inspires them to come back.

Lighting, furniture, view, amongst others, dictate

the tone and the atmosphere, thus much attention

is needed during the planning stage of the establishment

of your restaurant. The room needs to be

unique, efficient for staff and eye-catching to diners.

The furniture should be strong and blends with the

restaurant’s ambience. Here are the most important

tips one should put into consideration while setting

up the dining room of a hotel.

1

Enough room between tables

A dining room should not be so crowded; there

should be sufficient room between one table and the

other, to ensure smooth movement for workers and

additional comfort for customers. The aisle needs

to be about 18-36 inches wide. The seating arrangements

are determined by the type of furniture in

place. Compact restaurant booths save on space

compared with traditional chairs and tables. The selected

seats should be easy to clean and last for long.

2

3

4

Test every seat

Before the inaugural of the restaurant, it is advisable

to sit in every single seat to identify the

problems that may piss off the customers. Make

the required changes and test again until every

seat and table is in the right shape and position.

Select sturdy and durable furniture.

Furniture can either destroy or build the reputation

of your restaurant. The first impression

the customers are exposed to is the images

of the chairs and tables. Charming and comfortable

furniture make your customers feel

at home and prolongs the clients’ stay in your

premise; whereas uncomfortable furniture is

likely to make them stay shorter. You also need

to go for the furniture types that are easy to

clean; in this case, I suggest seats with fabrics.

Minimize noise

So much noise around your restaurant could

distract your guests. The level of noise acceptable

to restaurant depends on the type

of restaurant one operates. Some noises in a

fast-food or casual restaurant can somehow be

5

5

tolerated, but that becomes an issue in a

high class or exclusive restaurant. Despite

your delectable food and good customer

service, noise could deter your customers

from coming back to your restaurant.

Apart from spending quality time while

eating, some customers use restaurants to

have meetings or discuss business opportunities.

Hence, the need to have less noise

around your restaurant. To keep your

customers or encourage new ones to visit,

try the following tricks to lessen noise in

the dining room: Installing carpet, use

tablecloths, insulate the ceiling with soft

materials and keep away loud machinery.

Make your wait station portable

Wait station should be transferable as per

the requirements for convenience purposes.

It should also be restocked to ensure

the smooth running of activities. Wait station

should have these items: Soup bowls,

refrigerator, salad plates, teapots, water

glasses, saucers, silverware, soup cups and

dinner mints. Others are garbage pail,

garbage bags, broom, dustbin, cleaning

rags, fire extinguisher etc.

22 Kata kata cartoon magazine Issue 23 2019 www.katakata.org

6

7

8

Make use of room dividers

The main purposes of room dividers in a restaurant’s

dining room are to enable effective use of

the available space and to conceal areas where

private activities are going on. This measure applies

to huge and open dining rooms.

Use window dressings: Fix appropriate window

dressing in case your restaurant is located in a

busy area and if there is too much light coming

through the window.

Don’t make the dining room too dark: Try

as much as possible to make the dining area as

bright as possible. That brightness brings some

degree of tranquilities with it. Of course, at night,

candle dinner with less light is more than welcome.

9

10

Avoid uninviting odour: Any bad odour

near the dining room can effectively kill the

appetite of your customers, so try to avoid

this. Make sure the restrooms are not too

close to the dining room; ideally, it is recommended

that the restrooms should have

two doors separating them from the rest of

the rooms

Colour: The choice of the colour of your

dining has a huge impact on the psychology

of your customers. Colour induces a person’s

attitude to the environment. Choose

an appropriate colour of the wall, seats and

table to stimulate emotions which ends up

affecting the food choices of the customers.

With the suggestions above, you

can turn your hotel dining room

into a fresh, cosy, comfortable and

attractive area for your customers.

How successful you have achieved

this task will show in your sales.

TECHNOLOGY

New technology boosts life in Africa

By Samuel Ouma

The emergence of technology in communication sector has made life easier globally, especially

in Africa as a continent. Communication in the 21st century is faster and reliable as people

share ideas, engage in public debates, discussions and send messages from where they are.

Communication is a process of exchanging ideas between two or more individuals using a

particular channel. It is affected by various variables such as sender, receiver, message, channel,

feedback.

The African traditional society

had the most complex means of

communication as the message

could easily be interpreted and

misunderstood. The common forms of

passing information from one person

to another were dances, horn blowing,

songs, drums, symbols, cult scripts,

messengers, signals, drums, colour,

appearances, dressing, emotions and

attitudes.

There is a great disparity between

modern and traditional ways

of communication. African

traditional society had the most

complex means of communication

as the message could easily be

interpreted and misunderstood.

The common forms of passing

information from one person to

another were dances, horn blowing,

songs, drums, symbols, cult scripts,

messengers, signals, drums, colour,

appearances, dressing, emotions and

attitudes.

The disadvantages of these methods

outweigh their benefits. Information

could not reach people living in far

places and in time, could easily be

skewed in cases where heralds were

sent to convey the message.

The news could be easily forgotten

since its accuracy depended on the

memory of the emissary. Moreover,

signals like smoke could easily be

tampered with by bad weather.

During windy seasons other regions

were posed to miss what is being

passed on. Drum beaters and

messengers used a lot of energy to

ensure the message got to the right

people thus it was tiresome.

The pace of communication in African

countries has gained momentum

and its positive impacts are eminent.

Introduction of new technologies

has altered how things are done.

One can send information from his

office, home, while travelling without

a requirement to be in a specific

place using faxes, mobile phones,

texting services, video conferencing,

video chart rooms and social media

channels.

Technology is also playing a great

role in carrying out business.

Business owners only need email

to notify their targeted customers

about the launch of new products.

Websites and business social media

pages offer immediate responses to

customers’ queries and solutions to

their problems and Internet enable

business people reach new markets

with no need to travel. It allows

potential customers to view the

company’s products online anytime.

Technology aids companies and

organization in keeping employees’

data, maintaining contacts and data

flow.

World Health Organization report indicates that African

countries are making good progress in combating

health crisis which the continent has been struggling

with for decades.

An improvement in governance has

been witnessed due to the emergence

of technology. Research shows

that governance has tremendously

improved in 34 African countries

since 2000. The governments use

technology to ensure effective

delivery of goods and services such

as education, transport, health. It is

also being used in the prevention of

vices such as corruption. Countries

like South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania,

Zambia, Benin, and Uganda among

others, have recently introduced a

digital taxing system to collect more

revenue.

Quality of life has also improved

with continuous discoveries in

the medical field. Advancement

in technology has seen many

lives saved due to availability of

efficient machines which enable

physicians to diagnose and treat

patients effectively. World Health

Organization report indicates

that African countries are making

good progress in combating health

crisis, which the continent has

been struggling with for decades.

Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia,

Tanzania and Kenya etc. are making

progress in realizing Universal

Health Care. Technology has

played an active role in the cancer

screening programs in Africa,

and it enables the continent to

reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Moreover, health experts are using

technological expertise to mitigate

widespread of dangerous diseases

like Ebola in different regions in

Africa

Most countries have also put into

place security measures such as

physical installation of CCTV

cameras, fire alarms, and heat

or gas detectors. Despite many

challenges facing Africa, there has

been recently a decline in the rate

of insecurity. Will African maintain

Music

Donald

Fighting against inequality

and for justice reform

MUSICIAN

ACTOR

GloverWritten by Tedman Oscar & Arthur Adil

Donald Glover (He performs under

the musical stage name Childish

Gambino and as a DJ) delivered

in 2018 the video of the decade

with his “This is America.” Although

Gambino is regarded as a

very talented and versatile artist,

his “This is America” clearly confirmed

that and equally made a

bold statement about his artistic

position and talent. This he vividly

showed in

the choreography

and the message

behind the video.

Delving into gun

violence, drugs

and racial tension in his country,

the Atlanta series star showed

the world what it means living in

America.

Springing into a stream of views

after its release, it quickly became

the No 1 trending video on

YouTube, sparking worldwide

conversations on America’s gun

obsession and years of racial tension.

He also celebrates the joyous

lifestyle of Americans through his

lyrics, giving it a good blend of

balance.

Some viewers aren’t that pleased

with the visuals, especially with

the portrayal of bloodshed and

assassination. They are worried

about their kids and how they

would digest the true meaning

behind the song. It has not been

quite a nice time for blacks in

America, with amongst others,

two unarmed black men unlawfully

arrested at Starbucks and

Meek Mill… amongst other unacceptable

mistreatment of blacks

in the USA. In most cases, when

cases of brutality against blacks go

to the court, they get very controversial

verdicts which often spark

condemnations, and in some cases,

wide protests around America.

www.katakata.org

31

This rape of justice, as some would call

the court verdicts, have led to a call for

an urgent attention to the need for justice

reform and as well as to combat racism.

Gambino’s creative director Ibra Ake gave

an insight into the concept behind the

video, and said their intention was simply

to normalize the black experience. “As

creators, who are kind of marginalized

with our voice, we try to make a vacuum

in a way where we aren’t influenced by

what was made before us, which, usually

in the media, specifically, comes from a

white world and a white infrastructure or

a system that is controlled by white people.

Even with this video we reduced it to

a very black feeling, a very violent feeling,

but also a very fun feeling”

Done extremely well on the charts, there’s

no stopping the genius that was put into

this song and it will long live as a testimony

of the versatility and creativity coupled

with the genius that Childish Gambino is

and in my eyes, a pillar of #BlackExcellence.

KIDS

Written by

Ogo Ubabukoh

In our effort to encourage kids to be our

future leaders, Kata kata has decided to

take the plans to the grassroots level. Recently,

we appointed Liam Katabira to be

our Ambassador in Africa. As the Kata

Kata’s youths Ambassador in Africa, we

are fully convinced that Liam Katabira will

be an inspiration for other kids. Having in

mind that kids are undoubtedly the leaders

of tomorrow, we want to encourage

other kids to come on board and be creative.

We strongly believe that by encouraging

kids to become great writers, they

will become very conscious and critical of

their environment. This would help them

to bring huge positive changes once they

have the chance to become leaders as well

as create a better world for all of us. To

become a good leader, one must be conscious

of their environment.

With Liam Katabira as the captain of the

Kata Kata Young Writers’ locomotive

train, we challenge other kids to come on

board and discover their creative talents

as well as create a better future for themselves!

Are you a youth out there? Send

us your articles; we will help publicize

and perhaps publish your works if they

are very good. More than that, join our

kids’ creative club and share your creative

qualities and gain from the creativities of

other kids.

inspirational and creative little Ambassador

Liam Katabira

Can you kindly introduce yourself to the

readers?

Liam: I am Katabira Liam Jason. I am

7 years old. I live in Wakiso District in

Uganda with both my parents. I have one

brother called Len David Musaazi.

In which school and grade are you?

Liam: I go to school at Sir Apollo

Kaggwa Primary School Nakasero. I am

in Primary Two Orange.

It is indeed amazing to see a child of 7

years old, not just knowing what they

want but equally aspiring to achieve

that. You should be proud of yourself. I

guess my obvious question is: Why do

you want to be a writer?

Liam: Actually, writing is fun and I enjoy

doing it at this age. I have watched good

stories on television like Bob the Builder

and Sponge Bob square pants. I want to

write stories that can bring happiness to

the world like those stories that I have

watched on television.

What do you want to achieve as a writer?

Liam: I want to write so many stories

that can be published as children’s

storybooks and will be read by many

children or watched as cartoon movies

on television. I want to visit so many

children, even in the villages to read my

stories.I want to go to many places in

the world so that I read my stories and

tell the people that children also have

special talents.

I also want to make many stories on

the computer so that so many people

see them. Kata Kata Cartoon Magazine

has provided space on their website to

post my stories weekly. I think I am the

youngest columnist from Uganda.

How / where do you get your inspirations?

From your surroundings, the

past or just do they come spontaneously?

Liam: When creating my stories, I

look at what is around me. Like what

we do at home; what my friends do at

school and what I watch on television.

For example, I have written a story

about Shabby Boy, for example, when I

saw so many untidy kids from my class

who didn’t tuck in their shirts, so I decided

to write about them.

I also imagine and think a lot to create

good work. I have a story called the

Dark Well. I have seen many children

going to the well with small jerrycans

to fetch water. I imagine it is so scary if

they go without their parents. I have not

been to any well because we have water

at our home. I think everyone should

read my Dark Well story. It is very interesting.

Can you tell us more about the Dark

Well story? Can you narrate a summary

of it?

Liam: Two boys were sent to the well

to collect water late in the evening. It

was scary, they went running to collect

water and one of the boys fell into the Dark

well. It was good that one of the boys ran

back home to tell their parents and they

rescued him.

Later, their father learnt how to make a

water tank so they were able to collect rainwater

from the roof.

Wow! What an educative story. What can

parents learn from you Dark Well story?

Liam: I think parents should stop sending

their children alone to dangerous places to

avoid such accidents.

You won the Bamble Bee Championship for

Kindergartens and Nursery Schools, organized

by Lotte Kindergarten and Pepea

Africa initiative in 2017. Did that award

have any influence on your wish to become

a writer?

Liam: Yes, when I won the Bamble Bee

Championship for sounding, blending and

reading words, I was really proud. I was 5

years then. I got a small present of a Toy

Gun and an EduTab. My mother helped me

put so many stories on the EduTab. I would

read the stories during my free time, unfortunately,

it got spoilt. I hope I can get a new

one so that I can keep my stories.

It was easy for me to read and understand

the stories because Lotte Kindergarten

taught me how to sound, blend and read as

well as form sentences when I was 3

years. Because I know how to spell

words, it made it easy for me to write

stories. I rarely make mistakes when

writing as I am careful with what I

write. When people read my stories,

they like them so I get inspired to

write more and more.

How do you combine your creative

writing with your schoolwork?

Liam: I always find time to write

stories after doing my classwork.

In the morning hours, it is strictly

classwork. I never think of writing

stories. After resting for 2 hours after

lunch, it is when I think of writing

my stories. I always write my stories

during the time I am waiting for my

mother to pick me from school or

during the weekends. It takes me

about 1 hour to write a story if I am

not interrupted.

If I am at school, I always like to

compose a few stories with my

friends then when I go home, I memorize

and write the story well. Once

I identify a nice topic. Sometimes I

share with my Mother the story title

and keywords before writing the full

story.

How is your relationship with other

pupils both at school and at home?

Liam: I am a friendly person. I like to

play games with many children both

at school at home. At school, we tell

each other stories. At home, I mostly

play with my cousins when they

come to visit us. Most of the games I

like to play are in spelling words and

drawing pictures. I like swimming

as well and joining children’s camps/

events.

You have been appointed as the Kata

Kata Ambassador in Africa. How

do you feel about this appointment,

which is a huge recognition of your

talent?

Liam: I am very happy to be the Kata

Kata Ambassador in Africa. When

My mother told me that Kata Kata

had liked my stories, I was very happy.

I did not know that my stories would be

loved by so many people because they

were very short. I like Kata Kata a lot

because it will show my work to so many

people.

I was writing for fun. When my mother

made for me a page on Facebook, it

changed all the game. It was easy for me to

connect to Kata Kata.

How exactly will you represent Kata Kata

in your capacity as the Ambassador?

Liam: I want everyone in Africa and in

the rest of the world to know about the

good work of Kata Kata cartoon Magazine.

As an ambassador, I will go to meet

many children and make them know good

stories. I want also to go to the television

so that people can watch me.

NZA

(AGAMA’S SON)

All my stories will be published by Kata

Kata, wherever I will go to speak about

my stories, I will be speaking on behalf of

Kata Kata. They are my friends now.

What is your message to other children

out there who want to achieve their

dreams?

Liam: Every child has a special talent.

They should ask their parents to support

them to develop their talent. If they

do good work, they should show their

parents.

We wish you much success in the future;

we look forward to working together as a

team to help you achieve your potentials.

Introducing the Kata Kata Ambassador

Liam Katabira

The other often untold side

By Ogo Ubabukoh

World Population Review

2019 ranked Haiti among

the poorest countries in the

world with a Gross National Income of

$1,830. Moreover, there have also been

negative portrayals of the Caribbean

country in the media. Pictures in the

media show impoverished people and

tremendous devastation. Yes, those stories

might not be untrue. But despite

what we have seen, read and heard about

Haiti, there is that other - often hardly

mentioned - side of the country. Haiti,

despite all the negative publicity, can be

one of the best destinations for explorers.

It boasts seductive beaches, unique and

breathtaking sceneries, diverse cultures

among others.

Are you looking for an unusual holiday

destination? I am sure you will not look

further after reading more here about

Haiti’s potentials. For now, let us overlook

the negative side of the Caribbean

nation and instead, focus on why Haiti

has much more to offer to tourists than

previous thought.

Culture

We begin with the Haitians’ culture. It is

home to a rich and diverse culture which

is rarely found elsewhere. Haiti’s culture

is a mixture of African, French, Spanish

and natives caused by colonization.

Dances, music and religious practices

dominate Haitian customs. Dancing is a

lifestyle in the North American country.

Festivals such as Carnival, Jacmel Film,

Ancestry Day etc, weddings and church

activities are centred on dancing. On

religion, a whopping percentage of the

population are Christians with 80 per

cent Catholics, 16 per cent Protestants

and the remaining ones engage in a cultural

practice called Vodou (the concept

of evil spirits). Haitians are also zealous

about sports with football and volleyball

being the most cherished games.

Family is treasured despite the existence

of Restavek System, which is called rester

avec ( “to stay with”) in the French

language. This is a process in which a

child from a poor family is sent to live with

a wealthier or less poor family (often relatives)

because the parents of the child in

question cannot afford to take care of them.

The wealthier or less poor family is expected

to provide food, housing and sometimes an

education for the child in exchange for doing

domestic work. This is still being practised in

some African countries presently.

Cuisine

Another appealing factor is food on the island

of Haiti. Haitian cuisine is the renowned

food worldwide and its uniqueness in savour.

It is a mixture of French, African meal mostly

served with fried pork meat, fried goat meat,

salt flavoured malanga, salad, hot pepper.

Natural and local spices are used to improve

cuisine’s taste. Take your loved ones with you

to Haiti and enjoy meals prepared by outstanding

cooks in the Caribbean country.

You cannot talk about Haiti without mentioning

the rare hospitable nature of Haitians.

They are so friendly and expressive and always

ready to help the tourists. Despite the

economic challenges,

across the country,

people are wearing a

smiling face, ever willing

and ready to welcome

you as a tourist. What a motivating factor to

visit Haiti!

Hospitality

Beaches

Haiti, which is nicknamed in French as the

“Pearl of the Antilles” (La Perle des Antilles)

due to its abundant natural beauty and

wealth, mainly accumulated for the French

Kingdom, is a land full of nature. Apart

from being the world’s leading producer of

sugar and coffee in the 18th century under

France, the beauty of the country’s nature

remains one of the major attractions for

many tourists up till today.

What of those seductive beaches?

Its beaches are exceptional with

clear blue waters and turquoise

blue. With different beaches

providing perfect sands for playing, lying

down, picnic and water activities such as

Jet skiing, Kayaking and Snorkelling, Haiti

beaches provide a perfect destination for relaxation

after a tough day. The beaches also

offer an opportunity for one to observe the

setting of the sun which is always attractive.

Some popular beaches are Port-Salut, Ils-a-

Rat, Chouchou, Jacmel, Kokoye etc.

Historical sites

Equally, Haiti’s great history would inspire

many; you do not need to be a historian

to be attracted by its unique history. Make

sure you visit the MUPANAH museum in

Port-au-Prince which has detailed information

about the country’s political history

and revolution. Get to learn more about

why it was the first Black Country to gain

independence from its colonizers in 1804.

The museum exhibits items of former leaders

and pioneers, pictures of its presidents

and evolution of the country’s flag among

other significant information.

Since the country has not experienced

an influx of tourists, its natural resources

remain unsullied and untouched. For

instance, Jacmel beach has maintained

its blue sparkling colour. Furthermore,

the beauties of its tallest mountains

are also amazing. A photo lover has no

excuse of not travelling to Haiti. You

would not lack what to capture.

For sure, corruption and natural calamities

like the earthquakes and

hurricanes may have had devastating

effects on Haiti, the country still has

much more to offer for those who look

beyond those challenges. Haiti is truly

a multi-cultural nation full of nature,

vibrant and hardworking people, rich

history, world-class beaches and delectable

delicacies. When are you exploring

Haiti to experience the amazing

country yourself?

Ask Aunt Silvia

Good Day Aunt Silvia,

I am a regular reader of your

column; thank you for using

it to enlighten and empower

Africa and the rest of the

world. Our daughter has been

living with a man of her dream

for more than 10 years. They

have three kids, but they are

not yet officially married in

the traditional sense. Reason?

My husband has insisted the

husband-to-be must pay a

huge amount of money to us,

plus other items as a dowry.

The young man made it clear

he cannot afford the amount

and items demanded from

him. He also insisted he is

not buying our daughter, but

marrying her out of love. Our

daughter is in a dilemma; on

the one hand, she understands

that the father wants to

keep to the tradition, but

sometimes, the pressure from

other women and neighbours

can be too much for her.

They sometimes insult and

call her a “prostitute” for not

getting married traditionally

to the man. Even though

my daughter is happy with

him, she sometimes feels her

marriage is not “secure.” I

need your advice please, aunt

Silvia.

Akong ( Juba, South Sudan)

Dear Akong,

Thank you for your mail.

I share your concern.

Unfortunately, you did not

indicate your position on

the issue. While I try to

understand your husband

who wants to stick to the

tradition, we must remember

that traditions are not static.

They are made by human

beings to fit their ways of life

and circumstances at a given

time and period of their lives.

Therefore, if these traditions

are “man-made,” they are

capable of being modified, I

think.

That said, I understand your

husband might not want to

give others the impression

that “his” daughter was not

“cheap.” Ironically, however,

by insisting on a high dowry

price from the prospective

son-in-law, he is automatically

making your daughter look

like a piece of a property. Worse

still, that demand alone may

end up making her partner

treat her as his property – and

disrespectfully. You and your

husband need to sit down and

discuss this. Try to know from

your daughter how she feels

about the relationship and

whether her man treats her

woman brings is like

well. Is she happy with him?

More importantly, there are

kids involved here. So the issue

is not just about your daughter

and her partner, but the future

of their kids as well.

I would suggest you find

a balance between the

tradition and a realistic look

at the present social changes.

Perhaps, asking for a symbolic

amount from the suitor would

make the whole parties happy,

while allowing you to still keep

to the tradition. Why don’t

you and your husband ask

the young man to bring any

amount he feels he is capable

of? That kind of gesture

would make the young suitor

feel accepted in your family;

more than that, it would lead

to a better understanding

between him and your

daughter in their marriage.

“Don’t search for a

shareholder,select a

life-partner.

That arrangement would make

your daughter to not feel like a

“prostitute” any more.

Remember, the fact that

your daughter now has

three kids with the partner

shows the seriousness of

their relationship. You and

your husband are not getting

younger. If you do not do

the right thing now that you

are alive, what stops your

daughter’s partner from

turning his back on the dowry

entirely when you are gone?

This is the time to make a wise

and quick decision, which will

make both parties involved

happy, without circumventing

the tradition. Both parties

deserve happiness. Good luck.

Yours,

Aunt Silvia
