ABOUT
NorBlack NorWhite is a brand which pays respect to the past,
questions the present and creates for future. Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit
Kumar raised their brand in Toronto, and moved to Bombay in 2010 to
explore their Indian roots with a different way of living. They’ve always been
keen in exploring the culture around craft and travelling the country, being
exposed to the diverse streets, people, villages and craftsmanship of India.
Learning about the process of Bandhani (tie-dye) textiles, these women were
drawn to develop fresh ways to re-interpret and re-create these old school
textiles and create awareness among people around the world about how
precious these under-rated art forms truly are, from an aesthetic, process and
value point of view. NBNW’s iconic ‘BomBombers’ reversible Bandhani silk
track suits opened up the floodgates to exploring more crafts and textile families
of India that applied to the world of street wear and contemporary fashion.
Without any formal design education, the ladies built NBNW from the base
up, designing passionately and building community while spending the first
6 years living in and working from their 600 sq feet Mumbai studio with
their Master Tailor (Mohammed Ji). Fast forwarding to a decade later, they
are based in a more spacious studio space in the capital city of Delhi surrounded
by a sweet team and in-house production headed by Mohammed Ji.
NBNW has evolved into a cultural platform, exploring it’s grey space, and has
always prioritized women and independent POC voices and artists long before
they became buzzwords. Along with designing, producing and promoting
Indian crafts to the world, NorBlack NorWhite works as a creative studio
which provides design and diversity consultancy, services and collaborations.
Life ain’t black and white, and our work explores the gray space
of culture, not just the clothes, hence the name NorBlack NorWhite
- says Mriga Kapadiya.
