ABSTRACT
The objective of the Graduation Project was to experience
and learn the mannerism and operations
of the industry, along with a self proposed project
done under the same guidance. I was lucky to be in
the hands of one of the leading high end street wear
brands in the country. I am indebted to the graphics
and production team of the label for teaching me the
processes and techniques involved. In addition to the
technical knowledge and skills, I was lucky to have exposure
to field visits which helped me to experience
the actual production, printing and dyeing of fabrics.
I was assigned to the Graphics and Content Creation
team of the brand, under the guidance of my mentor
Mr Bhavya Ahuja. I am greatful for the opportunity
given to me by the brand to understand operations
of a high end street wear brand in a diverse market.

NOBLACK NORWHITE
1 Norblack Norwhite
Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar - Founders of Norblack Norwhite
ABOUT
NorBlack NorWhite is a brand which pays respect to the past,
questions the present and creates for future. Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit
Kumar raised their brand in Toronto, and moved to Bombay in 2010 to
explore their Indian roots with a different way of living. They’ve always been
keen in exploring the culture around craft and travelling the country, being
exposed to the diverse streets, people, villages and craftsmanship of India.
Learning about the process of Bandhani (tie-dye) textiles, these women were
drawn to develop fresh ways to re-interpret and re-create these old school
textiles and create awareness among people around the world about how
precious these under-rated art forms truly are, from an aesthetic, process and
value point of view. NBNW’s iconic ‘BomBombers’ reversible Bandhani silk
track suits opened up the floodgates to exploring more crafts and textile families
of India that applied to the world of street wear and contemporary fashion.
Without any formal design education, the ladies built NBNW from the base
up, designing passionately and building community while spending the first
6 years living in and working from their 600 sq feet Mumbai studio with
their Master Tailor (Mohammed Ji). Fast forwarding to a decade later, they
are based in a more spacious studio space in the capital city of Delhi surrounded
by a sweet team and in-house production headed by Mohammed Ji.
NBNW has evolved into a cultural platform, exploring it’s grey space, and has
always prioritized women and independent POC voices and artists long before
they became buzzwords. Along with designing, producing and promoting
Indian crafts to the world, NorBlack NorWhite works as a creative studio
which provides design and diversity consultancy, services and collaborations.
Life ain’t black and white, and our work explores the gray space
of culture, not just the clothes, hence the name NorBlack NorWhite
- says Mriga Kapadiya.

“
Mriga Kapadiya, the co-founder of NBNW, was
the first to shift the pilgrimage out to Mumbai
in 2009, before Amrit Kumar (co-founder)
joined her six months later. It was during their
travel to the Kutcch district, working with a library
of indigenous textiles at the Kala Raksha
preservation center, making tie-dyed fabrics
alongside a local artisan family, when the idea of
NorBlack NorWhite suddenly crystallized. Currently,
in their mid-30s, both of them have almost a
decade of design experience in their hands. Remarkably,
neither Kapadiya nor Kumar have
taken formal fashion education. Rather, they’ve
opted for a more intuitive route of “learning
through creating”—embracing the multiple
test runs, mistakes, and missteps along the way.

WHERE?
DELHI
In 2015, NorBlack NorWhite decided to relocate
it’s office to Delhi to be closer to manufacturers
and young, new upcoming brands. NBNW didn’t
just rise out of the earth to become the popular
streetwear brand it is today, it was nurtured by the
age-old traditions of families of textile-makers.
When they were asked about the roots of
their brand, Kapadiya and Kumar go back to
their early travels to the time when they met a
multi-generational artisans family in Kutcch,
Gujarat, located in the north of the country,
the Khatris. With these artists, they learned
the Kutcch technique of bandhani, a kind of
tie-dye featuring a repeated diamond pattern.
“
We work to recognize
that indigenous
skills, stories and
trades are becoming
extinct by the day, so
if we don’t create the
space for it now, the
whole world will become
one big monocultural
plastic bubble
and that’s boring
and depressing.

IDENTITY
DESIGN
The brand, NorBlack NorWhite doesn’t relate to
contemporary fashion and aesthetics with strictly
black or white, rather it says that color and pattern
often get pigeonholed into ‘ethnic,’ ‘flamboyant,’
or ‘boho.’ The brand loves the idea of life being
lived in color and created from the same space.
Without a doubt, these mood-brightening
and vibrant colours (influences) are reflected
in both Kapadiya and Kumar’s personal
wardrobes and their front line too. The designers
spread a wide net for inspiration, often
crisscrossing northern India for sourcing
new fabrics, or jetting back and forth to North
America for fashion pop-ups. And that makes
packing for a last-minute trip a ‘no-brainer’.
They’re just as influenced by American’s 90s
R&B music videos as they are by old vintage
Bollywood films and the maze of colorful
wares at Mangaldas Market in Mumbai.
Whether they’re dressing for a usual weekend
at home or for a meeting at the studio,
there’s a sense of purpose and optimism.
I don’t want to be in a room
where I just look like anyone else.
- says Amrit Kumar.

WHAT MAKES
DIFFERENT?
Tag of Norblack Norwhite - Made with 100% pure love
13 Norblack Norwhite
The high end street wear brand, NorBlack NorWhite, stands
in vibrant opposition to the minimalistic sportswear status
quo. It’s in this cacophony that the brand NorBlack NorWhite
merges classic Indian handicraft with modern silhouettes.
They traveled across the country, met artists and communities
who worked within centuries of tradition. Some of their art forms
were vanishing as handicrafts gave way to mass-production.
NBNW was born out of a desire to maintain, reinterpret, and merge
these traditions to give them new life in a modernizing world.
This energy is contagious. When Major Lazer came to India
to film his music video “Lean On,” they wore NBNW. The label has
even received major accolades from former Gucci Creative
Director Frida Giannini and fashion critic Suzy Menkes.
But NBNW didn’t just rise out of the earth to become
the popular streetwear brand it is today, it was nurtured
by the age-old traditions of families of textile-makers.
The connection to their production shines through all the designs
that NBNW does — their clothing is connected to the
land and its people. In fact, NBNW prides itself on its deep
roots to the humanity of its production. They often share pictures
of the Master Ji(s), tailors and dyers they work with.
But NBNW isn’t just about fashion, it’s about how fashion exists
in a much larger world. In one of their campaign “Shimmy
Shimmy Ya”, a collection of unisex holographic oversized separates
that look like what we’ll all be wearing through the eventual
nuclear fallout, they teamed up with local artists and dancers.

NorBlack NorWhite’s work stands out against the typical fashion
milieu, popping with bright colors and distinct personality.
They’re built on a foundation of tradition, combining new and
old to create streetwear for a new generation of world citizens.
15 Norblack Norwhite
We don’t come from a formal fashion
education, which means no rules,
many mistakes and lots of play along
the way.

PROJECT
OVERVIEW
The projects completed in the duration of 16 weeks
i.e. Jan - Apr in NorBlack NorWhite, under the
‘Graphics and content creation’ team. I was working
in motion graphics and social media communications
for the advertising of the brand.
Most of the work was digital and done for the real time
promotion of the same. I helped in the promotion of
the already launched and upcoming new collections,
followed by assisting in editorial shoots and photography
/ videography for the same. I also got a chance
to record the process videos i.e. making of a garment,
which required visits to the factories, manufacturing
units, dyeing units and printing units. The process
video shoots were followed by recording the stitching
of the garments in the production lab of studio, after
the fabrics being sent from the manufacturing units.
Social media project on the other hand required
multiple campaigns for instagram stories, posts
and IGTVs, sliders, shout outs, graphics and
post production for the editorials and websites.

FAM PAGE
BRIEF :
The project required the creation of a minimum
45 seconds Motion Graphic Animation video
using character animation and storyboards
for the Fam (Team) page of NorBlack Nor-
White, to be uploaded on it’s official website.
The purpose of this project was to introduce the
viewers and customers of NorBlack NorWhite with
the team members of the this family and highlight
their skills in a smilutating way. Hence, using
my communication design skills, I was asked
to create a single video showing how all the members
of the team work together as a family, make
the impossible ends meet and create magic.
This is an effective way to get them to trust
you and to convince them that you are definitely
the right source to fulfill their needs.
The video is supposed to follow the aesthetics,
elements and colours of NorBlack Nor-
White to create the similar vibe and feel.

FAM PAGE
Sketches, failed attempts,
final output
METHODOLOGY : The initial strategy behind the ‘Team Page’ was to create interesting
animated illustrations of each member of the NBNW family. I started with
normal sketching and illustrations which eventually got rejected due to lack creativity
and NBNW aesthetics. In order to match the wacky aesthetics of NorBlack Nor-
White, I tried to create something by mixing collaging and free hand illustrations.
This definitely gave it a touch of what Amrit and Mriga (founders of NBNW) wanted,
but it still lacked an element of uniqueness which catches everyone’s eye to the page.
After multiple attempts of animated characters, the whole idea got rejected.
When I started everything again from the scratch, I took the ‘Vintage Bollywood’
and 80s famous TV shows as inspiration. When I came up with few
brain-stormed ideas, Amrit showed interest and gave a Go ahead with the same.
The final team page had only one video introducing all the members one after
one, instead of creating a separate video for everyone because it might bore
the viewer to watch each video separately. I used Adobe Photoshop and Adobe
After effects to create the collages and video. The video starts with a vintage
televesion box and a glitch screen, to match the NBNW vibe completely.
The television screen multiplies with the ongoing countdown, and starts displaying
the characters on every screen one after one. I tried my best to create
the best visual which catches the maximum eyes to the website.

shows all the rainbow colours,

BRIEF :
2.1 ASSISTING E-COMMERCE SHOOTS : I was given
opportunities to assist in all the shoots for upcomig collections
during the period of my internship period. I was
taught how to set the studio lighting, setting up the reflectors
and key lights, making the model comfortable and setting
the camera (with the tripod) at the correct position. I
was given all sort of work by my mentor during an editorial
shoot to make understand each and every perspective
of it, and prepared me to do the next shoot on my own.
2.2 POST PRODUCTION : After the e-commerce and
editorial shoots were done, it was my responsibility to do the
post production of all the raw images, which usually exceeded
250 raw images per shoot. Post production includes colour correcting
all the raw images at the same time, editing the images
by adjusting HSL (hue, saturation, luminance), rescaling and
resizing the images according to the website’s requirement and
cleaning up the unnecessary spots from the final edited images.
2.3 PROMOTIONAL SOCIAL MEDIA CREATIVES :
Once the shoot images were ready to be uploaded
on the website before the launch of the collection,
my next job was to make ‘n’ number of promotional
stories, posts, GIFs, newsletters and IGTV
videos of the new collection to be uploaded on every
social media platform, for the promotional purposes.

ASSISTING
for e-commerce shoots
METHODOLOGY : I assisted my mentor in few
e-commerce shoots i.e. Yin-Yang collection, multi
check, moon shimma and the holi saree collection.
A day prior to the shoot, the whole setting of studio was
changed and adjusted according to the requirement of
shoot. All the lights, reflectors and camera were placed
followed by a test shoot. I was given all kind of work
related to the shoot to make me understand and experience
everything. I tried my best to grasp everything
and also made notes as reference for future purpose.
By the end of every shoot my mentor made sure that
I’m prepared enough to do the next shoot on my own.

POST PRODUCTION
for e-commerce shoots
METHODOLOGY : The basic methodology I used while
editing the shoot images was to match the lighting, colour
contrast and brightness of all the selected images which
show the correct colour of the fabric to the customers. I used
Adobe Lightroom for the colour correction because the software
allows me to use a base image for the comparison and
apply the same effects on the rest of the images in one go.
Once the images are done with editing, Adobe Photoshop has
been used to resize the photos and clean the untidy areas. I
was given this work for two new collections i.e. Yin Yang and
Holi saree, which were launched during my internship period.

GRAPHICS
METHODOLOGY : The basic methodology I used in
this particular project was being active on social media and
finding new and interesting ways to engage NorBlack Nor-
White’s customers into being updated about the new collections
launched by the brand. Being a socially active person
it was very interesting for me to find new ways to make
a story interesting and bringing traffic to the website.
I tried to maintain the NBNW aesthetics and design while
creating the stories, blended with my ideas and creativity.
I tried my best to emphasise the fabric of the garment
in my graphics, along with the garment itself.

PROCESS
VIDEOS
BRIEF :
3.1 PROCESS VIDEO SHOOTS : One of my
main responsibility was to shoot the process and
making of a garment, from it’s manufacturing unit
to it’s stitching in the production lab. I was given opportunities
to visit the manufacturing, dyeing and
printing units to experience and record how the fabric
gets dyed, printed and dried before reaching the
production labs for stitching. The purpose of this
was to capture how beautifully a fabric is pampered
and prepared before reaching it’s final customers.
3.2 PROMOTIONAL TEASERS : NorBlack Nor-
White has always been into capturing the making of
their garments from it’s start to end. Before I joined
the brand and took the responsibility of continuing
the ritual, there had already been few process
videos made by the previous interns. Hence,
my another responsibility was to create stories
and teasers of all the process videos, to be uploaded
on the social media platforms. The purpose
of this was to show the customers and viewers
the beautiful journey of their garments.

PROCESS VIDEOS
METHODOLOGY : The basic methodology behind
shooting the making of a garment, was to capture from
the best possible angle which emphasises the main task
being done along with mainting the balance of negative
and positive space. During my first shoot my hands were
not stable enough, which ended up in taking poor angled
pictures, with a lot of distraction in the background.
Despite of making n number of mistakes, my mentor
always tried his best to teach me everything with patience.
By the time I was shooting my second process
video, my hands were set on the camera, I had perfect
knowledge of balancing the light with silhouettes,
balancing the negative and positive space, and most
importantly I could manage to show a beautiful story
emphasising the task through my recorded clips.
I would like to mention that the only methodoly that could
be applied here was practise, and it could not have been
possible if me aur mentor had given up on the situation.

Some shoots also required more than one visit to record the complete process. This particular

followed by washing of screens after every layer of application and drying of fabric.
The last process shoot done by me was Black and White check and Multi

record the whole process. After being done from the location shoot, we recorded

of Faridabad. The only con of doing the outdoor shoots
was travelling since all of the factories and production
units are situated away from the main city. Unlike screen
printing, discharge print is done by applying chemicals
on the fabric and letting it dry, which later turns out
to leave an impression on the pattern area. The discharge
print was realy interesting to capture, followed
by it’s stitching in the production lab of the studio.

TEASERS
METHODOLOGY : To start with the teasers,
I looked upon some of the promotional
videos and inspirational videos of other competitive
brands followed by scketching out
the ideas about how the videos will go about.
The software to be used for the same was Adobe
After Effects over which I had good command
and after approval and improvisation.
It took me almost two hours make three teaser videos
for each process video, along with finalisation.
I also played with the music to choose the best
suitable audio for the teasers. The only purpose
behind this was to make the videos interesting
enough to catch our viewers’ attention,
make them fall in love with the process their
garments are made, hence making them
irresistible to buy more products from the store.

SOCIAL MEDIA
CREATIVES
BRIEF :
Along with the main projects I was working on, my
mentor expected me to make additional creatives
for social media platforms and the official website.
The creatives included sliders for the website, newsletter
graphics, free shipment graphics, sales graphics
and stories, collaboration posts, valentine’s posts
and stories, font explorations, instagram carousels,
visual moodboards and ‘Oh Aunty Ji’ (NorBlack
NorWhite’s alternate page on instagram) graphics.
Though these creatives were on second in my priority
list, but the creatives took the majority of my time
during the internship. Also this one section of my
project was segregated into further many small creatives,
which might not look like a major investment
of time and hardwork but, it rather took
the maximum energy and time to be created.
The purpose of this was to engage the audience
and customers with our page and keep
them updated and active about our brand.

NEWSLETTER
GRAPHIC
METHODOLOGY : I was asked to create a newsletter
graphic for the multi check collection. The basic
methodology behind was to pick elements from
tom the fabric and silhouttes of this collection. The
background has been created from a mat, which is
usually used during stylised shoots, and match perfectly
with colours of multi check fabric. I tried to
create an illusional background using the mat, giving
it a three-dimensional effect. I had to use four silhouettes
in the graphic so I decided to create a GIF.
The GIF has a continuously rotating illusional
background, along with displaying
the changing silhouettes of the fabric.

SHIPMENT
GRAPHIC
METHODOLOGY : NorBlack NorWhite gives
worldwide free shipment on orders above 100$.
This is one of those information which catches
customer attention and increases sales, hence
this information needed an interesting graphic
to be displayed on the website. The basic methodology
was to show straight how NBNW fills
the world map with it’s fabric scans, showing it’s
worldwide reach and availability. I’ve used Adobe
Photoshop to create the map masked with NBNW
fabric scans, and Adobe After effects to show the
movement from India to other places in the world.
I tried to create multiple graphics which
couldn’t match the aesthetics of the website
somehow, and eventually got rejected. Even
after several attempts, my mentor was not
satisfied with the graphics so we ended up putting
the graphic on hold for the time being.

MUSIC
COLLAB
GRAPHIC
METHODOLOGY : NorBlack NorWhite collaborates
with Music Artists for promoting the process videos of
their garments, which means they use the artist’s music
as a base and background of every video they create.
This not only enhances the beauty of the video, but also
promotes the new artist’s music through their brand.
Hence I was asked to create a graphic for a shout out to
all music artists who feel their music matches with the
NBNW aesthetics and story. The methodology behind
this was to communicate this message through a simple
animated graphic. The softwares I’ve used for this is Adobe
Illustrator and Adobe After effects. I created an illustration
of a monkey wearing the headphones, constantly
vibrating/shaking on the beats, along with a rotating rainbow
background giving it an absolutely NBNW vibes.
Graduation Project
78
METHODOLOGY : I was asked to create some
Valentine’s graphics for post. The basic methodology
behind this was to re-create 1960s iconic
Bollywood Couples masked in NorBlack Norwhite’s
fabrics. I took the iconic monochrome
scenes from movies and masked only their
garments in colourful NBNW fabrics. I’ve
placed a vintage camera reel as the frame of the
post, to give it a complete Vintage Bollywood
vibe. I’ve used Adobe Photoshop for the
editing of images and Adobe After effects
for creating an animation of the same.
The camera frame has been rotating slowly
with every changing picture in the frame.
METHODOLOGY : This was the first
trial for the post. The methodology followed
in this particular graphic was to
create heart shaped balloons (as a symbol
of love), masked in NBNW’s fabrics
(made with 100% pure love). The ballons
are held by a girl wearing the banana
split dress of NBNW. I tried to create a
GIF of this where the balloons are swaying
in the air, creating a beautiful mood.

maximum elements and aesthetics of NBNW.

VISUAL MOOD
BOARDS
METHODOLOGY : After the drop of two new
collections (i.e. Yin-Yang and Holi Saree) I was
asked to create swatch cards, interactive mood
boards and visual boards showing the elements
of both the collections together. The Yin-Yang
collection has nothing but black and white check
on it’s fabric. Whereas the Holi Saree collection
is itself a representation of each beautiful flower
through every saree. Hence I started with creating
swatch cards of holi sarees, which shows the texture
and feel of the fabric and print. Adobe Photoshop
has been used to create these swatch cards. The
visual boards have also been created the same way,
with an added animation of rotating flowers, moving
lines and sliding swatches in the background.

METHODOLOGY : I was
asked to create sale posts
for khus-khus and banana
split dress (dip-dye fabrics).
The methodology behind
this was to create interesting
visual graphics to flaunt
the beautiful dip-dye fabrics
and catch customers’ eyes.
I came up with many interesting
ideas out of which
only four got selected for
the posts. I’ve used the fabric
scans of the same as the
falling background of the
posts, to maintain the colour
harmony and to connect
with the customers.

LEARNING
&
NORBLACK NORWHITE being a high end street
wear brand provided me a close hand experience
of TEAM WORK and PROFESSIONALISM. I
worked in the CONTENT CREATION team as an
intern, but was an equivalent contributing member
of the team. Along with betterment in SOFT-
WARE SKILLS, I also developed skills in VERBAL
COMMUNICATION. Talking about technically,
major development of skills was in ADOBE PHO-
TOSHOP, LIGHTROOM and AFTER EFFECTS

EXPERIENCE
The major learning acquired during this
graduation project experience was to
learn MOTION GRAPHICS to the core,
professional E-COMMERCE SHOOTS,
and video and photo editing at it’s best.
As vast the field apperars as much scope
of innovation it carries. Another major
thing which I learnt was how to run
such a big brand by working in a small
team of 10-12 workers and emplyees.

CONCLUSION
The entire duration of Industry Internship came out to be a personality
and skill developing experience. With the help of a supportive
team at NORBLACK NORWHITE, I was able to unlock
multiple dimensions to my skill and myself. My time in this internship
has helped me in directing my energies towards making
best of my time. The entire experience of working in NBNW as a
Content and Graphic designer was extremely helpful in not only
building my portfolio, but also my socio skills. I’m really grateful
to work under the guidance of Mr Bhavya Ahuja who was constantly
mentoring me regarding different design approaches and
also providing me with a comfortable yet challenging environment
to work in. In conclusion, I would like to state that the objective of
Industry experience through internship was successful endevour.
