Danish
Design Report
By Tatjana Schantz Johnsson
Danish design is blooming with innovative and
smashing ideas. Home luxury for environmentally
conscious consumers - colors to brighten
up the day and funky and humorous shapes
to keep up the spirit. All designed and created
with a simple recognizable Scandinavian
touch by the use of top class elements.
TABLO – a three-legged design beauty
TABLO is a new elegant table on three legs, very Scandinavian in its simplicity - yet interesting
in essence with the interaction between two different materials - the plastic table
top and the wooden ash legs. Easy to assemble without use of screws, come in two sizes
H42, D:50/78cm in black and white. The name Tablo cleverly refers to the English table and
French word ‘tableau’ – meaning a scenic, organized arrangement!
Ray of light in an industrial way
The RAYS range is an elegant collection of instantly recognizable dishes, bowls and candle
holders with a characteristic slender array of ‘arms’. RAYS dishes and bowls are meant
to hold fruit and candles, but they also make an attractive decoration in their own right
on any surface. The range casts sensitive shadows on tables and surfaces. On a practical
note, the open design of the bowls makes the fruit displayed kept oxygenated - keeping
brown fruit spots at bay. Created by the industrial designer Trine Mervig. Height of candleholders
varies: 22, 28 & 34cm.
Winner of the 2011 Danish design Award/Formland: Georg Jensen a design collection for the kitchen and dining table
created by Alfredo Häberli.
With soft shapes in steel, porcelain, glass, wood and rubber, the design features distinct Scandinavian styling and functionality
at the centre of everyday meals. ALFREDO’s collection includes: A salt and pepper set, kitchen towel holder,
carafe, pitcher, salad bowl and salad servers. This autumn, the collection has expanded with an oil/vinegar set in glass,
an oak holder for the salt and pepper or oil/vinegar set, and a series of containers in glass, oak and stainless steel.
‘The collection’s pieces are cohesive in their styling, serving functionality and it offers great design at an affordable price,”
Colourful Trinidad
Finnsdottir Design - unique ceramic collection crafted in the finest
Back to the Future
SPINE is a new collection consisting of three chairs
created by SPACE Copenhagen for Fredericia Furniture.
The world renowned furniture company
just celebrated its 100 years anniversary.
The idea behind the collection explores the contrast
between classic Scandinavian design tradition
and the two Space designers passion for finding a
subjective way where things that are not supposed
to match, coexist in sturdy elegance. The collection
is named after the recognizable Y-construction in
the base, adding an extra subjective layer to the
aesthetics through the whole collection. All the
furniture in the collection is upholstered by skilled
craftsmen and comes in a combination of leather
and well-manufactured oak and ash.
A Story of
True Passion
& Family Success
Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen was established in 1963 by goldsmith
Ole Lynggaard, who after having studied and worked in Germany,
Paris, New York and San Francisco, came back to Denmark and
bought a small workshop. Charlotte Lynggaard, his daughter, who
is a goldsmith and designer like her father, joined the company in
1992. Søren, his son, assumed management in 2003 and Michel
Normann, Charlotte´s husband, became commercial director in
2006. The brand has emerged as the premier jewellery company
in Denmark and was appointed Purveyor of The Royal Danish
Court in 2008. The Royal Warrant indicates Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen’s
superior performance in the Scandinavian jewellery
market.
The family-run house has a solid and well-established reputation
as a luxury brand, not only throughout Scandinavia, but also in
many other parts of the world. “Our idea to design personalised
and flexible jewellery that uses only the highest quality of metals
and gemstones has manifested in a wide range of collections
which we have launched in the past 50 years,” tells Goldsmith and
Jewellery Designer Charlotte Lynggaard.
The designers Charlotte and Ole each have their own unique
style, which adds an extra dimension to the collections. Most Ole
Lynggaard Copenhagen jewellery is produced at the company´s
studio north of Copenhagen. With more than 40 goldsmiths working
in the studio, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen is one of Northern
Europe’s biggest jewellery houses. This allows Charlotte and Ole
to work closely with their highly skilled staff in hand-crafting
their unique designs. The family business and its entire staff are
dedicated to the company´s high standards of quality and design.
With almost 50 years of experience, the aim is still to design jewellery
that last. Therefore the elegant, timeless jewellery from Ole
Lynggaard Copenhagen are passed on as cherished heirlooms
from generation to generation.
Today, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen is one of the worlds few fine
jewellery brands where true craftsmanship is preserved in Denmark.
Love at
First bite
Words by Julie Ralphs
The newest craze in Copenhagen is cupcakes. A
coveted American delight that the Danes absolutely
adore. We sneaked behind the scenes into
the kitchen to speak to Kristian Vangsgaard,
who’s given the concept a couture touch at Agnes
Cupcakes. A delicious shop concept that’s springing
up all over town, where you can invite your
friends to take a bite of pure bliss.
Kristian Vangsgaard was boxing with his trainer
every day for the two years during the development
of Agnes Cupcake, which begs the question:
What’s a masculine guy doing with something so
cute, sweet and petite? “I have a VERY strong sweet
tooth,” admits Vangsgaard. “While traveling to the
US and England, I visited many different concept
shops. I wanted to create the absolute best gourmet
cupcakes wrapped in elegant packaging, with
great service and a minimalistic shop design.”
And he has. Actually the entire shopping experience
at Agnes Cupcakes was designed to seduce
your senses. From the delicious décor merging
Italian marble, bamboo and natural wood with
chrome and glass. To the truly cool iconic packaging.
To the cupcakes themselves, as exquisite little
works of art. Why the elegant angle versus a down
home, cooked-in-grandma’s kitchen approach?
“When you spoil yourself, it has to be something
special,” explains Vangsgaard. The exclusive interi-
or is the work of Danish interior designer Johannes
Torpe, who designed all the details from the cupcake
boxes to the paper napkins to all the furniture
inside. Vangsgaard wanted to create “a luxurious
experience for a little as 18 Danish Crowns, for a
mini cupcake which comes in a beautiful box and
a small shopping bag.” Even the bags have become
a fashion status symbol. “It shows me that after
only one year, we have a very strong brand,” adds
Vangsgaard.
Vangsgaard had no doubt that this product, with its
roots in America, would appeal to Danes and other
cultures. “The right products with the right image,
ingredients and packaging will make it anywhere.
With the right people to bring it to the market in
the right way. Along with word of mouth,” says
Vangsgaard, who personally developed each of the
30 different flavors. About 20% of their turnover
comes from catering to office parties, weddings,
product launches and other occasions, where they
can customize the cupcakes with logos as well as
special colors and flavors. In terms of branding,
they’ve designed their own cupcake towers, which
they rent out for all events. Even their delivery boxes
and van are branded. Add to that their signature
stars appearing on almost all their cupcakes and
you have a simple, well thought-through concept
with a wow effect.
37

Exquisite little works of art
As Denmark’s first bakery dedicated to cupcakes, Agnes
Cupcakes uses original Danish recipes with as many organic
ingredients as possible, such as Fair Trade bananas and the
finest chocolate, with flavors ranging from sweet so spicy,
like ginger zing, pistachio and licorice, which appeal to a
broad range of people - including men. Describing the demographics,
Vangsgaard sites “65% women and 35% men,
sometimes we have 98% men in the shop.” Not to mention
celebrities such as John Cleese, the singer Medina, various actors
and members of the royal family. “Queen Margrethe has
ordered them several times for her afternoon tea in Tivoli,”
smiles Vangsgaard, who stays extremely attuned to customers’
needs. In fact, he’s expanding kitchen on Sværtegade to
a larger, open kitchen where you can arrange to have friends
come and bake cupcakes for bachelorette parties, birthdays
and the like.
Agnes Cupcakes is an excellent example of Denmark becoming
a global player, not just importing ideas but exporting
them, as well. Vangsgaard sees the export of products and
concepts as “exploding over the next five years. High quality
ideas are in demand, especially if you keep the concept
clear and simple.” With two shops in Copenhagen opening
within the first year and three more in the works, Vangsgaard
has already targeted Hamburg, Germany for the second quarter
of 2012, with the intention of opening 10 to 20 shops in
2012 and a goal of 55 shops by 2013. Outrageously ambitious
for some, but realistic for a truly visionary entrepreneur like
Vangsgaard. What’s more, he’s keen on corporate consciousness
and keeping a CSR profile. “Be a good boss to your staff,
help them out all you can and think about the environment,”
adds Vangsgaard. “We only use FSC certified packaging and
we support UNICEF, cancer organizations and charities as
well as culture, art and film.”
An idea man and entrepreneur with a sixth sense about people,
products and experiences, Vangsgaard previously introduced
the idea of Rent-A-Mini to Denmark, appealing to
tourists and business people alike. Having mastered cars and
cupcakes, what type of new business venture can we look forward
to seeing from him in the future? He’s already launched
a New York City styled bakery called Laura’s Bakery with a
Classics &
New Classics
The reinvention of
Danish jewelry
By Louise Hagemann
While the retail market in general is struggling to stay alive,
the Danish jewelry industry is sparkling with success and
expansion.
Among both traditional and upcoming Danish goldsmiths
a new trend has a occurred: The reinvention of old traditions
and classic pieces in a new, modern light.
In the Danish jewelry design industry there is no crisis. Instead
there is expansion, success and a great combination
of old, traditional goldsmiths and upcoming, modern companies.
Danish jewelry designers are turning the other cheek when
confronted with a retail market with red numbers in the financial
statements. The Danish jewelry industry has experienced
a notable growth since 2005. Instead of seeking shelter,
they have managed to create new paths in the industry.
“There is nothing natural about it,” says managing director
of the Supplier Association of Goldsmiths Christoffer Ritzau.
“They have defied the crisis, simply because their products
are the right ones.”
40 41

The old and the new classics
Danish jewelry design has a long and proud tradition of
peerless art craft by hand. For more than a hundred years
Danish designers have created unique Scandinavian quality
and beauty to all over the world.
Several pieces have become modern day classics and will
never become unfashionable. Still the traditional and esteemed
goldsmiths do not dwell on the past. They have embraced
the present and let time and trends influence their
work. But the unique personality and supreme quality of
the brands remain intact.
And this is how you create new classics.
According to Christoffer Ritzau this is also the key to success
for Danish jewelry designers. The customer will be
amazed by new designs but will at the same time know
what to expect:
“They have strong concepts. The jewelry is created from
simple ideas, which makes the customer return for the next
collection.”
Georg Jensen – traditional jewelry with a new touch
One of the grand old men in the jewelry boxing ring is Georg
Jensen.
The story of the luxury brand Georg Jensen started more
than a hundred years ago, and rather quickly the designs
of the young sculptor and silversmith grew into a global attraction.
At his death in 1935, Georg Jensen had stores in
Paris, London, Berlin and New York.
”Silver has this wonderful moonlight glow– a bit of light
from the Danish summer night,” he said about his passion
for working with silver.
His timeless, aesthetic Nordic style and creative visions
have become the inspiration of many designers throughout
the world ever since.
Today Georg Jensen design is still breathtaking silver and
timeless classics like the beloved daisy. But it is also much
more than that. It is the perfect meeting of innovation and
history.
This is the case of the two year old Moonlight Collection,
where iconic motifs from famous Georg Jensen pieces from
the past get a modern twist and become both historical and
contemporary at once.
This reunion of vintage and modern design is also the influence
of the latest collection, The Smitty Cuffs, which consists
of three retro-romantic arm cuffs combining minimalism
and bohemia for the modern woman.
Mini versions of the Lynggaard-classics
Another grand old man in Danish jewelry fashion is Ole
Lynggaard. The trendsetting family business goes back almost
50 years.
In 1979 Ole Lynggaard invented a unique flexible lock system
which at the same time became a part of the jewelry
and not only a practical measure. This invention meant that
the buying customer was now able to create her own personal
piece of jewelry and change the look whenever she
felt like it.
The lock system is still used today and plays a great part in
the concept of jewelry at Ole Lynggaard. The use of charms
and combinations of jewelry that can be put on and removed
with a simple click invites the customer to be creative
and design her own unique piece of Ole Lynggaard
jewelry.
My Little World is a new collection with 25 different charms
which are all mini versions of already existing famous
Lynggaard designs.
The reinvention of the classics claims the traditional and
the contemporary at once.
42 43

Upcoming brands unite past and future
But Georg Jensen and Ole Lynggaard are not alone in the
playing field. New competitors have arrived and some of
them with the same visions of letting old traditions and
contemporary trends fusion.
One of them is the much hyped Shamballa Jewels, who goes
in completely new, yet not unsuccessful directions.
The brand with the name of a mythical Buddhist kingdom
name combines the new and the noble in their luxury lucky
charm bracelets where woven nylon thread meets diamonds,
emeralds and sapphires.
Quite a few mentionable it-persons around the world have
claimed their love for Shamballa, including former Editorin-Chief
of French Vogue Carine Roitfeld, designer Karl Lagerfeld
and our own Danish crown princess Mary.
Thousands of years of history is the future
Other new players in the field include Carre and Milas. In
the designs of these young Danish hopes there are colors,
senses, hopes, fantasies, flowers, bubbles, dreams, glamour
and fairytales to be found.
“With real gold and gems we tie thousands of years’ creation
and history to the jewelry,” creator of Milas, Minna, says.
So even in case of the newcomers the future meets the past.
The classics become new classics, and Danish jewelry design
is ready to conquer the world.
We carry the stuff of our dreams
From Copenhagen a love affair
By Henrik Steen Møller
Politikkens Forlag A/S, 2003
Illustration: Michael Svendsen
Just as it is full of children, the city is also full of animals.
From Carlsberg’s burly elephants to real-life mangy foxes,
which have assumed a rather strange gait now that they are
city dwellers. I am used to the more nimble and quick-witted
fox of Røsnæs. Out there to the west, close to Johan Thomas
Lundbye’s splendid Kallundborg, I have a little country house
perching on the steep cliffs, and I have been so reckless as to
give the local fox morsels from my table. So now it turns up
in the moonlight, head cocked to one side, demanding more.
Reynard has even discovered how to activate the electric light
on the garden path by walking towards the front door until an
installation, the workings of which remain a mystery to me, is
automatically triggered, and the light switches on to illuminate
the darkness and the fox’s insistent eyes.
Copenhagen is full of wonderfull mechanical devices too,
from the City Hall clock to the famous clock-and-watchmaker
in Kompagnistræde, who always has a keen audience looking
through the window of his cellar shop. Here we can find a
great-grandfather’s turnip – his thick silver watch – and modern
clocks showing the date and the movement of the planets.
clocks costing unimaginable sums of money, but they have
their admirers, even their collectors. Some of the clocks in the
city have stopped, we look at them in surprice. A clock that
doesn’t tell the time! It’s fun to seek out the city’s mechanical
devices. There is the Richs building’s weather forecaster on
the City Hall Square at the entrance to Vesterbrogade; in fine
weather the girl cycles forth with her skirts flying, and when
it’s raining up goes the umbrella. There is one of the strangest
towers in the city, rising and falling, the gasometer on Amager,
and there is the transformer substation at Kastrup Airport,
clad in robes of luminous glass by the sculptur Ingvar Cronhammer.
The city clocks, striking the time in steady beats, the
concert carillion in Vor Frelsers Kirke, the big mobile mechanical
adventure of Tivoli, computer games where we can test
our skills at catching thieves, the one-armed bandits. A world
full of surprices.
A large red bull stands nodding in a butcher’s window. Denmark’s
great sculptor Jørgen Haugen Sørensen maintains that
butchers are always in a good mood and have wholesome red
cheeks. This is because they are permitted to kill. Haugen Sørensen
is of the opinion that killing, slaughtering, is part of
the human condition. At the same time he asks us to note that
bakers are always sour and pale, like the flour they work with
their hands. This makes me think about how sour I became
when I see all the indifferent sculptures that seem to stand
around Copenhagen, forsaken and unclaimed. There ought
to be a cemetery for sculptures, where they could be lined up
when we have had enough of looking at them in city squares,
city parks and along highways and byways. On the other
hand, it’s fun to go on a city expedition following a specific
theme: children, often in the guise of angels; animals, be they
elephants, lions or dragons; objects, such as sugar loaves,
headdresses, good signboards or long since forgotten guild
emblems and, not least, fruit. Just see how much fruit there
is in Copenhagen, on cornices and the garlands of columns,
surrounding windows and in friezes on building facades. Fruit
is only outdone by flowers. The flower runner is a particularly
popular motif. But the real hunt is abstract – the spontaneous
detection of Copenhagen’s beauty. The city is fragmented, a
mixture of noble cultivation and haphazards disorder.
Danish film with
Global appeal
Words by Julie Ralphs
More and more Danish filmmakers are winning the attention
of Hollywood heavy weights, with provocative scripts,
evocative aesthetic styles and a red carpet cast of actors. We
caught up with one such company, Drama Deluxe. Keen on
hitting the big screen with their creative manifesto and new
film - The Stranger Inside. A twisted psychological thriller
destined to bring you to the edge of your seat. Breathless.
Danish filmmakers are going beyond the “Best Foreign Film”
category, with a star-studded cast as part of their formula for
achieving international acclaim. Take Nicolas Winding Refn,
who wrote and directed the UK cult film “Bronson” and most
recently directed “Drive”, starring Ryan Gosling and Carey
Mulligan, which won the Best Director Award at the Cannes
Film Festival. Lars Von Trier, ignoring, if you can, his deplorable
persona non grata comment at Cannes, has cast countless
Hollywood stars in his films, such as Nicole Kidman,
Kirsten Dunst, Lauren Bacall and Charlotte Gainsbourg,
among others. And award-winning Susanne Bier made a
name for herself with her Hollywood debut of “Things We
Lost in the Fire” starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro.
Just to name a few.
Drama Deluxe
What does it take to make it mega big in Hollywood – if
you’re not exactly from Hollywood? We spoke to the partners
in crime behind a new production company called Drama
Deluxe. Writer, director and CCO Adam Neutzsky-Wulff and
producer and CEO Michael Aoun. Their mission is to attract
gifted Danish film directors, writers, actors and crews coupled
with an international, high profile cast – to help catapult
Danish films into a more international arena with more
global appeal and exposure. As Aoun explains it, “to prove
that a Danish-based film company can create films in English
with a high, international production value at a fraction
of an American budget for worldwide audiences.”
Why haven’t Danish films received the international recognition
they deserve? “We have brilliant screenwriters in Denmark,”
says Neutzsky-Wulff. “But we need to let go of the
notion that you have an obligation to write something that
takes place in Denmark, just because you live here. Great
stories work in most territories. Why limit yourself to only
one? You should always strive to create something that can
transpose your cultural heritage onto a bigger arena.” But is
the quest for commercial success in conflict with the desire
to create films with an artistic edge? For Neutzsky-Wulff, “our
biggest challenge in Denmark is to overcome the notion that
if it’s commercial, then it’s not really art. If you look to America,
they’ve succeeded beyond comprehension in combining
the two. Then why shouldn’t we?”
The Stranger Inside
Dispensing with the stringent parameters that defined the
Danish Dogma films in the 90s, Drama Deluxe’s upcoming
film is an enthralling story that’s riveting and real. Called
“The Stranger Inside” starring William Baldwin, Sarah Butler
and Estella Warren, it’s a psychological thriller designed
to keep you guessing at every twist and turn on a convoluted
emotional rollercoaster ride that’s more akin to having a
nightmare while being wide awake. “It’s about how far people
can be pushed if manipulated in a devious way,” explains
Neutzsky-Wulff, who is the writer and director, producing it
together with Aoun.
Without revealing the ending, the plot involves a beautiful
young actress who has a hard time distinguishing dreams
from reality. To help her recover from a traumatic experience,
she and her psychiatrist husband vacation on a deserted island
in the Mediterranean. Suddenly a young traveler shows
up after trying to save her boyfriend from a fatal fall. The jealousy
between the two women drives the actress to throw her
out. Which prompts the traveler to ... Well, we can’t tell you.
Suffice to say, you’ll be questioning your own (mis)perceptions
and asking yourself “Did she or didn’t she?”
All will be revealed when the film hits the cinemas next year.
Shooting starts this month in Mallorca and New York, but
despite the plethora of pre-production details and knowing
that numerous other film makers are equally as eager to
make it big time, Drama Deluxe remain cool, calm and collected.
Do they foresee any intangible obstacles to playing
the Hollywood fame game? From Neutzsky-Wulff’s perspective,
“We know what it takes to be taken seriously in the US.
There are no obstacles. Only challenges. I’m sure we haven’t
met all of them yet. Ask me again in a year.” “’The Stranger
Inside’ is 100% funded by private investors,” adds Aoun. “The
first time ever that a Hollywood movie has been financed this
way and we intend to continue with that paradigm. We want
to show the world that “less is more”, meaning cost efficient
films can be as impressive and entertaining as expensive
Hollywood productions, which makes our films an interesting
opportunity for investors.” Investors, if you’re reading
this, brace yourself for what promises to be the hottest ticket
in Hollywood. New York. Copenhagen. London. Paris. Berlin.
Shamballa Jewels’ philosophy is inspired
by the ideas behind these old teachings
which are closely connected to the holistic
practices of yoga and meditation.
Mads Kornerup started out his jewelry
adventure back in the 90´s in Paris and
moved it after a while to the heart of
New York City. He sold a special designed
bracelet to the hip hop mogul Jay-Z and
since then the company has had great
success with what we today know as the
original Shamballa bracelet.
In 2004 Mads teamed up with his brother
Mikkel Kornerup to create Shamballa Jewels,
a full collection for men and women
of bracelets, earrings and necklaces
influenced by modern Scandinavian and
ancient Indian designs.
left Mikkel Kornerup, right Mads Kornerup
The stars of Shamballa Jewels
Old teachings tell of a mythical kingdom in a valley hidden in the Himalayas. Based on the idea of
a human wisdom that lead to the full blossom of a harmonious life, the kingdom was populated
by enlightened and compassionate people – so in general the kingdom was an ideal society.
This is said to be the Shamballa kingdom – which, when translated loosely from Sanskrit, means
“a place of peace and tranquility”.
Though the combination may sound odd,
the two cultures mesh beautifully to create
unique, recognizable pieces of jewelry.
The most familiar of their designs are the
macramé-and- jewel pavé bracelets, which
sparked the brothers’ success even more
when supermodel Helena Christensen
wore one to the Oscars.
Since then the Shamballa Jewels has
adorned many star clients such as Carine
Roitfeld, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino,
Gwyneth Paltrow, Real Princesses, Ashton
Kutcher, Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher,
Rihanna, Beyonce, Lars Ulrich and
Erin Wassaw – just to mention a few…
A main source of inspiration and a central
theme throughout the Shamballa Jewels
universe is the energy of creation. In the
jewelry the Thunderbolt represents the
male firepower of creation, whereas the
double Thunderbolt – the signature Star
of Shamballa – symbolizes the female
creative energy of the universe.
To welcome the energy of creation the
signature Shamballa bracelet is meant to
be custom created as to reflect the wearer’s
personality and unique individuality.
The unique and exclusive product experience
is at the core of their aspirations –
they will never compromise on quality or
craftsmanship: the jewelry is made from
18 ct. gold, white G/VS diamonds, colored
diamonds, precious stones & class
A-B pearls. From here, only the imagination
is the limit.
Mads Kornerup states, “When formulating
the designs, my goal is to remind the mind
and body of its natural ability to open and
heal. When wearing a piece, you enhance
the possibility of being reminded.” Shamballa
jewelry has been compared to white
truffles. They are rare and precious. Those
who find the right one are bound to cherish
it dearly.
The Pink Argyle Diamond. Uniquely intense in its vivid and vibrant
color. A true treasure of desirable rarity.
Personally chosen fair trade class A-B pearls. Perfectly round and
fl awless in surface and form. Vibrantly rich in color and luster. One
must go through nearly a thousand shells to fi nd such a true jewel
of the ocean.

City
Unspoiled, historical and
commercial in a happening mix
The heart of Copenhagen city is an intimate thrill on its own. This beautiful
part of the city is dominated by a skyline dating back to medieval
times with Renaissance copper domes, spires and bell towers. You won’t
find many other capitols in the world where it’s this to get around. Everyday
life is dominated by busy Copenhageners going to and from work
predominately on their bicycles riding along dedicated bike paths. You
are literally walking on the past with all the cobblestone streets- and
very often one way! Forget getting around by car, Copenhagen deserves
to be discovered by foot, bike or boat. Starting with a canal tour is one of
the best ways to get an overview of all the exciting places to experience.
The old city’s focal point is Strøget, a two kilometer long pedestrian
street and the best place to shop for high to low-end finds. For popular
Danish design make sure to pay a visit to Illums Bolighus and Royal
Copenhagen. Both shops are located at Amager Torv.
On one end of Strøget you find the City Hall Square where people gather
to pay tribute to national sport stars or to welcome the New Year, and
every so often you will run into some kind of demonstration. You can
climb up the City Hall clock tower for a great view and hear the tower
bells, which are synonymous with the noon-time news for
the locals, and chime on the hour daily. If you have a desire
to appear on live TV, there’s Aftenshowet (the evening
show), broadcasting daily on the square from 6 pm. On the
other end is Kongens Nytorv (the king’s new square), a large
roundabout where you can see The Royal Theater, which
also houses the famous Bournonvilles’ inspired Royal Danish
Ballet, Magasin du Nord, a beautiful department store
equivalent to Saks Fifth Avenue in Manhattan or Harrods in
London, and the famous Nyhavn.
Nyhavn, meaning the new harbor, was put into use for
trade back in the 1670s. It’s difficult not to come across a
lopsided shop house here that doesn’t have some 300 years
of history and numerous famous residents, among them
H.C. Andersen who used to live in house number 18. Due
to trade from far away lands, the sailor pubs and restaurants
ended up with exotic names like Cap Horn and Hong
Kong Café. This is a happening place to hang out, eat and
drink and be merry.
Christianshavn
Authentic and relaxed Island feel combined
with sublime gastronomy
You enter Christianshavn by crossing Knippelsbro Bridge leading to
the island of Amager and find yourself in an old, charming district that
dates back to 1618. The locals are a great mix of businessmen, artists,
hippies and traditional families. When it comes to city fires of the past
this area has been spared and is truly medieval Copenhagen.
Experience beautiful architecture, peaceful walks along the cobblestone
streets and romantic canals where people live in their much sought after
houseboats. If you are looking for a good restaurant, Christianshavn
has many to choose from and a few of the city’s best can be found on the
side streets named Overgaden neden Vandet or Strandgade. The restaurant
Era Ora specializes in Italian cuisine and Noma provides the best
in Nordic innovative gastronomy. Both restaurants hold Michelin stars.
Christiania is a must see area of Christianshavn. Back in the 70s a group
of hippies and intellectuals found that “something was rotten in the
state of Denmark,” and decided to make their own community. They
managed to take over a fairly large area of abandoned military barracks
and named it “Free Town.” They designed their own set of rules,
completely independent of public legislation. The politics surrounding
Christiania is a much discussed subject in the media and several
attempts have been made over time to close down the place due to
the selling of cannabis. Therefore, if you are walking down
Pusher Street and are offered Red Afghan or Black Nepal,
don’t expect to get a holiday ticket!
That aside you can expect to see innovative architecture, especially
around the lake area Norddyssen. The lakeside architecture
showcases peculiar and daring individual styles, as well
as social housing you never dreamt of. You will find homes up
in the trees or with hobbit like structures, colorful cabins and
futuristic UFO inspired residences. Be sure to make time for
a visit to the local blacksmith where the famous Christiania
bikes are built. At night you might even be lucky to hear nightingales
singing in the tree tops of “Free Town.”
King Christian IV is often referred to as the father of Copenhagen.
He is, after all, the man behind most of the city’s
remarkable historical renaissance landmarks as well as its
architecture and the layout of Christianshavn village, which
previously was a military area. He made certain that the village
be inhabited quickly by declaring the area a tax-free
zone for up to 12 years. Needless to say people didn’t think
twice about moving in.
Let’s go

Frederiksberg
Positively conservative, historical landmark castle,
big parks and lots of theaters
Frederiksberg is geographically a part of Copenhagen,
but has been governed as an independent
municipality since 1841. The main shopping
street is Gammel Kongevej. You can get there
within 15 minutes by walking from the city center
from Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square).
Frederiksberg is classic Copenhagen at its best.
You are constantly reminded of the past through
the architecture seen when passing by grand
bungalows and villas that cover a large part of
the district. The vibe here is just calmer than in
other parts of the city, a place where grandmothers
walk their poodles and take time to feed the
doves!
Frederiksberg residents are typically middleupper
class, primarily academics and people involved
in the art scene or broadcasting.
Main street Frederiksberg Alle ends at the main
entrance to Frederiksberg Have. A beautiful Baroque
inspired recreational area. The park has
been the place to go for centuries for Sunday trips
outside of Copenhagen to enjoy a bit of fresh air.
Frederiksberg is also a cultural haven offering a
variety of theaters, revues and cabarets.
A big event on Saturdays from 9 am – 3 pm is
the district’s open air flea market running from
April-October. The flea market consists of approximately
70 stalls and is located in the parking
lot behind Frederiksberg City Hall. Be sure to
get there early as it’s very popular.
In the Viking days Fredriksberg was a village area
named Solbjerg. In 1620 King Christian IV decided
the area should work as a manor and provide
Copenhagen and the castles with agricultural
articles. In 1699, the Frederiksberg Castle and
the two parks Søndermarken and Frederiksberg
Have were designed in French/Italian Baroque
style by King Fredrik IV and served as his summer
residence, hence the name. The new village
developed around the castle, leaving very little
land for farming use. In the years that followed,
the King sold the entire area little by little it become
freehold land and a parish of Denmark.
Middle-class Danes loved the area and they too
began to build their summer residences there.
Vesterbro
Tivoli Gardens, the red light district and specialized
designer shopping, let me entertain you!
Vesterbro might just be your first impression of Copenhagen
when you arrive from the airport by the new metro to
the central train station, Hovedbanegården. If you walk out
from the south entrance you are already on Istedgade, the
main street in the rather shady red light district. But it’s all
a mix now a day; you have porn shops and gay saunas next
to Pakistani and Thai green grocers and private residences.
About 10 years ago Vesterbro started undergoing a dramatic
urban renewal and the area is fast becoming more
fashionable by the minute.
Istedgade is a great shopping and dining street with lots of
small exclusive interior and fashion designer shops next to
hardware stores and textile shops. It’s also a common sight
to see Carlsberg brewery’s horse drawn carriages trotting
through the streets of Vesterbro. The scene is very bohemian
and colorful.
If you decide to take the nNorth entrance out of Hovedbanegården
instead, you are standing right next to The
Tivoli Gardens (1843), one of the 10 most popular amusement
parks in the world, and by far the most stunning. Tivoli
is much more than fun rides, it also has amazing gardens,
gourmet food restaurants, open air concerts, lots of theater and out of
this world creative high-tech firework displays at midnight. This treasured
garden is at its most beautiful at night time.
Vesterbro is in more ways than one, the hottest place in Copenhagen to
visit day or night.
From a historical perspective Vesterbro has been a center for working
class entertainment. But it is also a district with a long history of deep
poverty. Peasants came to Vesterbro to do their market business in its
many small squares. They would sleep in the Inns and just enjoy themselves
with whatever this city district had to offer, maybe even take a
stroll in Tivoli Gardens. In the 1800s the migration from countryside to
city was so massive that the area couldn’t keep up with the demand for
work. The area became very slummy and the red light district had golden
days. In those days Vesterbro was situated outside the deep moats
surrounding the inner city, which was protected by several gates, and
Versterbro was locked down at night to keep the mop in one place. The
district didn’t even have a place to worship until citizens from the more
affluent neighboring Frederiksberg district built a church for the locals.
This was done primarily because its residents just wanted to prevent
the working class citizens of Vesterbro from using their churches!
Islands Brygge
New urban city life, modern architecture, hip art
galleries, or go for a swim in the harbor
Cross “Langebro” Bridge from the city center and you enter this newly
developed part of Copenhagen. It’s been five years since a new era began
for Islands Brygge. Many buildings were torn down or modernized. Today
the area is becoming somewhat similar to what Covent Garden is to London
- a happening place with something for every age group. Plenty of
innovative new companies have decided to move in and the area is now
beaming with life on many levels.
Many art galleries have moved out here and focus on the artists of tomorrow,
but the area is still lacking some of the cozy feel Copenhagen has to
offer in most other districts. Quite a few of the remaining run down factories
have undergone a total makeover and are now luxury flats giving a
good example of futuristic architecture in Copenhagen. The harbor strip
for pedestrians offers marvelous sea and city views, especially at night.
This part of Copenhagen used to be only sea. Islands Brygge, meaning
The Icelandic Wharf, was where cruise ships from the neighboring Nordic
countries docked. Back in the 1880s the military needed new barracks
and a large shooting range so they started to reclaim land and build up
a whole new part of town. By the turn of the century, Islands
Brygge had become industrial consisting primarily of factories.
You will find plenty of entertainment alongside the picturesque
harbor strip.
Havneparken is a large park area with a major playground for
younger kids. A fun element in this kid’s haven is the magnificent
climbing sculpture. Next to the playground you will
skate boarding ramps, roller skaters and basketball courts.
There’s also a ground for beach volleyball and one for the
popular French ball game Pétanque.
Easily recognizable is the harbor festival square named Pineriet.
It’s a huge ferry cut in half with the deck removed, then
turned up side down resting on two major pillars. This way
the ferry works as a roof and provides shelter for a variety of
entertainment and events such as concerts, theater and even
birthdays and weddings.
Koncerthuset is designed by Jean Nouvel. It provides the best modern
acoustic and visual setting for concertgoers. We offer tours of Koncerthuset
in English, German, French, Brazilian and Swedish.
Nørrebro
Ethnic atmosphere, underground music and
vintage shopping
Nørrebro is a colorful multi-ethnic part of the city and by far the most
crowded in population. The city’s pulse is pumping fast and furious in
Nørrebro. The locals are a mix of old school working class (however extinct
a class they may be in modern society), young families, immigrants
and students.
The immigrants of Nørrebro provide a colorful specter of exotic shopping
and eateries dominated by Middle Eastern, Turkish and Asian influences.
Nørrebro also has plenty to offer when it comes to organic food shopping.
Ravnsborggade is a street that offers a great line up of whimsical
antique and second hand shops but remember to bargain. Nørrebro is
also the place to be when looking for underground music in clubs such
as Rust and Stengade 30.
One way to enter Nørrebro is by crossing the four lakes and the beautiful
Dronning Louises Bridge. The artificial lakes date all the way back to
King Absalon in 1160 and were originally made for defensive purposes
because they could easily be used to flood the area outside Copenhagen
before the enemy could get too close to the city center. Later the lakes
were used to supply drinking water, but by 1959 people had had enough
tadpoles and mosquito maggots in their morning coffee!
For centuries, the lakes have been a popular recreational area
for locals to hang out, jog, bike or feed the swans and ducks.
You can easily spend a few hours here, rent a paddle boat and
eat at one of the many lakeside restaurants and cafés.
Sankt Hans Torv is a beautiful old square with many fancy
café’s and if the weather permits, plenty of street entertainers.
Jørgen Haugen Sørensens’ edgy granite sculpture “The
House that rains” (1992-93), is a much discussed focal point.
It’s described as a raw and rather brutal monument and
might just refer to the more recent rebellious history of Nørrebro.
For decades it has been a place where left-winged orientated
youth hold demonstrations and often come to heads
with authorities. Most recently, protests against the destruction
of a youth house resulted in burned cars and buildings
and several arrests. Despite these clashes and a politically
fuelled history, the district is generally a very safe place.
Sankt Hans Torv
Østerbro
Noble, traditional and elegant, high
end art, promenade at the Sound
The wide boulevards and abundance of
greenery make Østerbro a very pleasant
place for the many families that live here.
This neighborhood, which is considered
to be one of the best in the city, is a place
you really wouldn’t mind your kids growing
up. Ex-Princess Alexandra gathered
the same and recently moved here to start
a common life with her new husband and
two little Princes. International diplomacy
takes up most of Dag Hammerskjolds Alle
alongside well established high-end auction
houses, galleries and antique dealers.
Be sure to visit The National Art Gallery
(Statens Museum for Kunst). The impressive
national as well as international art
collection covers the past 700 years.
Østerbrogade is the main shopping street.
If you have even the slightest interest in
Danish design, you will enjoy a visit to
Normann Copenhagen. It’s the city’s new
flagship store featuring modern design
combined with organic forms and functionality.
Next to Østerbrogade is the green
heart of the capital Fælledparken. This is
the place to hang out, picnic and play soccer
or listen to an open air concert by the
pavilion. Festivals and big political meetings
also take place in Fælledparken.
The National Stadium PARKEN is right
next to Fælledparken. It’s the home of Copenhagen’s
soccer team FCK, nicknamed
“The Lions”, and holds international sports
events as well as big international rock
concerts. The stadium has 42,000 seats.
People living on Østerbro love walking on
the Sound promenade, Langelinje. It also
happens to be one of the world’s largest
dock sides for international luxury liners.
Visitors are greeted by one of Copenhagen’s
most well known landmarks, The
Little Mermaid. If you walk to the end of
Langelinje towards the city you will end
up passing the royal family’s winter castle
Amalienborg.
Another great pedestrian area is the old
fortification “Kastellet” (1626). It’s the best
preserved of all Northern Europe.
Østerbro is clean and airy, a development
that didn’t happen over night. There’s a historical
reason behind this. In the late 1800s
when Copenhagen’s ramparts were long
destroyed, surrounding districts like Vesterbro
and Nørrebro developed from trade
into residential areas. The development
happened too quickly to make sure proper
housing conditions and surroundings in
general were taken into consideration.
People were stacked like sardines in small
apartments and deadly epidemics were
common. Østerbro, due to its location and
lack of trade market squares, remained
countryside for a longer period of time and
wasn’t hit by growing pains until the 1880s.
The authorities learned from previous
mistakes and introduced stricter building
legislation demanding broader streets and
higher quality of residency.
Umami’s cuisine is a unique experience, based on the
philosophy of Japanese cuisine of natural, seasonal
ingredients, accentuated by the substance and tradition
of French cuisine. With an international flavour, umami
offers the very best in modern Japanese cuisine and
interior design.
Umami has been a long time in the making, and its
final form is the fruit of intensive and unusually tasteful
research. Our travels all over the world have served
to confirm that our unique combination of cuisine and
restaurant style is absolutely perfect. Exquisite, healthy
and nutritious food is served in surroundings where all the
senses are catered for. At umami we offer an experience
which is a treat for the entire body, where you can eat
until you are full without even having a guilty conscience!
The restaurant combines our existing skills within
Japanese and French cuisine, with an extensive and
well-reputed knowledge of the wines of the world. At the
centre of the umami experience is the sublimely prepared
food and service which is second to none. Through our
core skills, it is our wish to share our enthusiasm for
modern Japanese food with all those of you who suffer
the same “addiction”.
Japanese food in Copenhagen has, for a number of years,
been synonymous with sushi or traditional Japanese
cuisine and, exquisite as the two solutions are, they do
not do Japanese cuisine its full justice. Japanese cuisine
has seen tremendous development, with the traditional
ingredients such as fish, meat, miso and soya now united
with elements from all over the world.
There is no need to make a reservation to eat in umami’s
sushi bar and we encourage our guests to just turn up.
Here you have every opportunity to fully immerse yourself
in the different ingredients and combinations.

gastronomy
Geranium is a lucid, light and dynamic kitchen. Our mission is to
create meals that involve all our senses – restores, challenges and
enriches.
Dynamic means force and stands for the living formative forces of
nature. These forces are not visible, but their biologic “footprints”
are. The effects can be seen if one learns to observe and understand
the connections between the formative forces and the physical matter
of all organisms”.
Dinner in the canopy
The restaurant is situated on the 8th floor in Fælledparken (Common
Gardens) in the center of Copenhagen, from where one can follow
the seasons’ journey through the tree crowns, catch glimpses of the
city’s green copper roofs and just see the windmills of Oeresund.
The location emphasizes Geraniums vision of gastronomic clarity and
diversity. We explore the area of tension between the urbane and
the natural.
Era Ora is more than a restaurant – it’s a gastronomic institution. As the
only Italian restaurant with a Michelin Star in Scandinavia since 1997, its a
flag ship of Italian cuisine in North Europe, offering the guests an exquisite,
holistic experience, where wine, food, service and interior culminates in a
perfect, sensory journey.
25 years ago, Elvio Milleri and his wife Edelvita Santos opened Era Ora in the
heart of Copenhagen and embarked on a gastronomic adventure to enlighten
the Danish people about Italian food, wine and culture. Today, the restaurant
has become an important part of Copenhagen’s gastronomic and cultural
In The Royal Danish Garden Society, one of Denmark’s oldest and most beautiful
gardens - Jakob Mielcke Hansen & Jan Hurtigkarl invites you for a total experience
of experimental goumet kitchen, art and design for all senses. To awaken
your desire and imagination, we offer the finest ingredients we can find. What
we create with these ingredients is then presented as a finely-crafted series of
surprises at your table.
The philosophy is to let whatever raw materials available to us at the time and
season - dictate and decide our menu. We constantly strive to change the menu
and play with our expression and we give ourselves the freedom to use only the
best quality.
Each list of ingredients and produce is the result of intense daily discussions
with local suppliers – with the understanding that they deliver only the absolute
best.
Welcome to good Danish food! Our meals are
prepared from ingredients grown on our organic
farmyard, Haneberggaard, in North Zealand.
We aim for simple, almost country-like
dishes. We strive to capture the essence of
the ingredients itself, instead of aiming for
molecular refinements.
gastronomy
Freshly caught fish with a genuine Italian twist is the foundation of this
beautiful restaurant. But Acquamarina is actually the result of a paradox,
and is still the only Italian fish restaurant in Denmark.
When founders Elvio Milleri, Edelvita Santos and Alessandro Jacoponi
came to Denmark from Italy, they immediately asked themselves how
Denmark didn’t have an Italian fish restaurant. The country is surrounded
by sea with some of the best fish and seafood in the world, but still,
Danes really didn’t bother to eat them. That fact is changed now. With
the opening of Acquamarina in 2008, Elvio, Alessandro and Edelvita
wished to show the Danish people what they were missing out on, and
the mission is accomplished.
designmuseum danmark
Bredgade 68 , 1260 Copenhagen, +45 33 18 56 56
Designmuseum Danmark is one of Scandinavia’s central exhibition forums
for Danish and international industrial design, decorative and applied
arts. The museum’s collections, library and archives constitute a central
resource centre for the study of design and its history in Denmark.
The museum offers visitors an overview of - the history of design. In the
new exhibition of 20th century Danish applied arts and industrial design,
the history of Danish design is seen in the light of the period’s aesthetic
discussions and social, technical and economic conditions. Around such
central figures as Poul Henningsen, Kaare Klint and Arne Jacobsen,
design and architecture are brought together in the museum’s interpretation
of the century’s dreams and reality.
The historical collections of European and Asiatic applied arts and
decorative arts include major works within Chinese ceramics, French and
German porcelain industries of the 18th century, and English and French
furniture. In the informative displays, emphasis is put on the significance
of these collections for developments in Denmark.
Complementing the Museum’s permanent collection, exhibitions look at a
broad range of subjects from design and fashion to textile and architecture.
Luxury from top to bottom
By: Julie von Sperling
Located in the magical Tivoli Gardens, Nimb re-opened in 2008 after the
completion of a major refurbishment, including a hotel with 14 individually
decorated rooms and suites, which soon after became a member of Small
Luxury Hotels and is on Condé Nast Traveller´s Gold List 2011.
The Nimb building has a history back to 1909 when the Nimb family
took over the operation of the establishment. The family first came to
the Tivoli Gardens in 1877 and opened restaurant Divan 2, nick named
´Nimbs Terrasse´, inside the Gardens. The building was named after the
family, where the two Nimb daughters ran the establishment and insured
the smooth functioning and elegant appearance of the place. Nimb would
become the birthplace of the open-face sandwich, and was an in-spot for
the jet set during the First World War years.
Ever since the re-opening, Nimb has been recognized not only in Scandinavia
but also abroad for its sticking minimalistic décor, its excellent variety
of meeting and dining experiences as well as exceptional service. Behind
the Moorish façade, Nimb offers total sensory satisfaction throughout.
The 14 luxuriously and individually decorated hotel rooms and suites, where most overlook
the Tivoli Gardens, leaves to nothing but relaxation in front the open fire place, in
the bath tub, in the bed with Geismar´s linnen or with the latest technology from Bang
& Olufsen, including the iPod/iPad docking station. And if guests have left their iPad at
home, they can borrow one from the hotel to play music or to go online, while they order
caviar and Champagne from room service. Nimb Hotel is true indulgence!
Nimb has much more than the hotel! Guests will also find drinks and cocktails in the classic
hotel bar, Nimb Bar, a seasonally curated menu in Nimb Brasserie, a cool ambience
in Nimb Bar´n´Grill, a Michelin-starred dining experience in Restaurant Herman, a French
bistro style cuisine at Nimb Terrasse, situated inside the Tivoli Gardens in the former
Divan 2, and wines from one of Scandinavia´s most extensive wine lists in Nimb Vinotek.
No matter where you find yourself in the unique Nimb universe, you can be certain of
receiving attentive and personal service, from dedicated people with a highly developed
sense of quality and a passion for what they do.
Welcome to Nimb!
