national trust 2020/21
winter meetings
by National Trust Nottingham Centre
September seems a long
way off as we come to terms
with social distancing and
restrictions on our daily lives.
Something to look forward to
when we can meet again is our
Winter Programme of talks.
The programme runs twice a
month from September to April. Each talk lasts for
an hour with a variety of subjects and speakers. The
year starts with “British Garden Birds”; later in the
year, “Gardens Great and Small” and “Japan’s Wildlife”.
History buffs may enjoy “Cuba and Panama”;
“Independence, Revolution and Pirates”, or “Inn Signs
and Local History”.
If restrictions are relaxed, we hope to run some
minibus walks for small groups from August onwards.
Here are the first few provisional dates:
Wednesday 5 August: Harringworth to Fineshade
(Rockingham Forest)
Thursday 20 August: Brassington to Tissington
(Peak District)
Thursday 17 September: Deep Hayes to Froghall
(Churnet Valley)
You will need to be a member of the National Trust to
join the Nottingham Centre and you will need to be
a member of both to attend our other activities. Our
programmes and newsletters keep you informed of
what is happening and when.
It costs £6 per person per annum to join and £10 for 2
people living at the same address. The talks cost £3
per person and £4 for guests.
Mapperley Scarecrow
Festival Raises SPIRITS
by Coop Member Pioneer Maria Narducci
The Mapperley Scarecrow Festival was created to
raise community spirits during lockdown. It was a
great success with over 150 scarecrows displayed.
There was so much positive feedback from the
residents about the festival and many used the
map to create walking and cycling routes to see
scarecrows for their daily exercise.
The festival included a competition with prizes
donated by local businesses. The winner of the
Public Vote category was ‘Florence the Superhero
Frontline Worker’ created by the ‘Hands of Kindness’
group who are residents of Beech Avenue who also
work hard making scrubs from the NHS. They won a
beautiful hamper from Deli-icious which they in turn
donated to the Florence Ward of City Hospital.
The Best Dressed category was judged by Vernon
Coaker and was won by ‘Shelly the Mermaid’ with a
prize of a family pass to White Post Farm.
Best Use of Recycled Materials was won by Daisy
with Recycled Reggie who won a ‘Big Night In’
hamper from the Co-op.
The festival was organised by local mums, Natasha,
Natalie and Maria. Maria is also the Mapperley Co-op
Member Pioneer.
Visit the ‘What’s On Mapperely’ Facebook Group for
photos of all the scarecrows. Group members can
also view an online map with 110 scarecrows plotted
on it. To date this has been viewed over 2500 times.
