Let’s get 

marinating! 

With these very weird and 

unprecedented times aff ecting 

all of us, I, as thousands of 

others, have now been laid off 

work for the next few weeks at 

least. 

Cooking was something that 

I used to love and cookbooks 

were my guilty pleasure, (Ali 

can vouch for my obsession 

and match it!) but working 

full time meant cooking had 

become a chore. Now with 

all my free time, dare I say it, 

I’m actually starting to enjoy it 

again. Having to be creative 

with ingredients when there is 

little on the shelves and minimal 

trips to the shops, using what’s 

in the cupboard has never been 

more important. 

Marinating meat infuses so 

much more fl avour into the dish 

and the longer you can leave 

it the better it tastes. Here are 

three very simple recipes to 

turn the humble chicken thigh 

or fi llet into something tasty. If 

you’re missing your favourite 

restaurant or takeaway right 

now (I know I am!) you can still 

enjoy fabulous fl avours at home 

at very little cost and minimum 

eff ort. 

Enjoy!

Chicken Tikka 

(traditional recipe) 

Serves 3-4 

500g boneless thighs or 3 

large chicken breasts 

For the marinade 

Knob of fresh root ginger 

2-3 garlic cloves 

2 green chillies (seeds left in if 

you like the heat) 

30ml rice vinegar 

1 tsp chilli powder 

1 tsp ground turmeric 

1 tsp salt 

2 tsp sugar 

1 tbsp veg oil 

Method 

Cube the chicken, place in a 

large bowl 

Marinade ingredients, blitz in a 

blender or food processor to a 

smooth paste 

Spoon marinade over the 

chicken pieces and turn them 

to coat. Cover with cling fi lm 

and place in the fridge for a 

minimum of 2 hours but ideally 

6 hours 

Remove marinated chicken 

from the fridge 20 minutes 

before you cook it so it comes 

back to room temperature 

Put 2-3 chicken cubes onto 

each skewer 

Grill for 12-15 minutes or 

bake in the oven 180°C for 

20-25 minutes or until cooked 

through 

Serve with pilau rice and naan 

breads 

Chicken Souvlaki 

4 boneless chicken breasts 


4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 

Juice of 1 lemon 

1 clove of garlic minced 

2 tbsp of dried oregano 

salt and freshly ground pepper 

Method 

Mix all your marinade 

ingredients together in a large 

bowl 

Cut the chicken into 2cm 

pieces and place them in the 

bowl. Use your hands to coat 

the chicken with the marinade. 

Cover the bowl with cling fi lm 

and place in the fridge for 30- 

60 minutes 

Assemble the chicken on the 

skewers and bake in the oven 

for 20 minutes 180°C or until 

cooked through 

Serve with Greek feta salad or 

warmed pitta breads 

Asian style chicken 

6 boneless chicken thighs or 3 

large chicken breasts 


4 tbsp runny honey 

2 tbsp light soy sauce 

1 clove of garlic minced 

Knob of root ginger minced 

salt and freshly ground pepper 

2 tsp sunfl ower oil 

Method 

Mix all your marinade 

ingredients together in a large 

bowl 

Put the chicken pieces into the 

marinade and coat each piece. 

Cover the bowl and put in the 

fridge for 2 hours 

Pour the chicken and the 

marinade into an oven proof 

dish 

Cook in the oven 25 mins at 

180° . Every now and then 

spoon the marinade over the 

chicken 

Serve the chicken with any 

remaining sauce from the 

casserole dish with brown 

basmati rice and steamed 

broccoli

Hi my name 

is Olivia Lowe. 

At the age of 

7, I decided 

to get involved in 

football. The opportunity arose 

via a friend of my Mum’s whose 

daughters were training with Gedling 

Southbank Girls football team. I 

thoroughly enjoyed the training 

and continued going on a weekly 

basis. We had a really good team 

and over 3 seasons we won 

numerous competitions. I then 

took the decision to trial for an 

Academy and was offered a squad 

place at Leicester City under 12s. 

We had a great team and played in 

the West Midlands Junior Premier 

League and made some great 

friends from across the Midlands 

and beyond. I also won Managers 

player of the year in my first season 

at Leicester, something I am very 

proud of to this day. I have remained 

with Leicester to the present day 

and have recently been offered a 

contract with the under 16s, which I 

have accepted. My football journey 

then took another step recently 

after being offered a place with 

the England Schoolgirls FA under 

15s, after 3 separate demanding 

trials. The ESFA experience has 

been amazing. I have been lucky in 

my football career, having brilliant 

coaches and playing alongside some 

outstanding players. I personally 

cannot wait to get things going 

again and am so looking forward to 

playing competitive football.

I joined Arnold 

Swimming 

Club in 2011 

aged 9. 

After some success 

in the County Championships 

I was approached by Nova the 

county swimming squad to go and 

train with them. With lots of hard 

work and dedication I qualified for 

my first Swim England National 

Championship aged 13. I came 16 th 

nationally in my age group for 200 

breast. This spurred me on and at 14 

I qualified for 100 breast at the British 

Championships. I was so nervous I 

thought I was going to wobble off 

the block! 

I qualified for Swim England 

Summer 2019 Championships in 

100 & 200 breast and came second 

in both races which was a great 

achievement for me. 

The season was on track, I 

competed at Luxembourg in my 

first international meet and I am the 

current County Champion for 100 

& 200 breast. I also qualified for 

Olympic trials in 100 and 200 breast 

which were due to take place in April 

2020 at the Aquatic Centre, London. 

Unfortunately, this hasn’t happened 

due to coronavirus. There was 

an outside chance of obtaining a 

European Junior qualifying time but I 

guess we will never know! 

My sport requires me to train 18 

hours in the pool with an additional 

4 hours in the gym every week. 

This requires me to be on poolside 

5.30am 4 times a week and evenings 

4pm – 7.15pm 6 days a week.

My sports 

journey: I 

started 

triathlon at 

the age of 7 at Absolute Triathlon 

Club. I carried my love for training 

all the way through and won the 

British Elite National Championships 

in 2015. In 2019, I competed at 

the British Age Group National 

Championships. And after a tough 

year with exams, managed to pull 

out a solid performance to win 

my age group. Triathlon offers 

great opportunities for people to 

compete at both elite and age group 

standards across a wide range of 

distances. Moving forward, I am 

looking at Universities where I can 

study alongside training, to build 

my fitness and mental resillance 

further to hopefully progress onto 

a career as a British Army Officer. 

Sport has given me the opportunity 

to train and compete across the 

country and abroad, where I have 

met people who are now my closest 

friends, some of who plan to train 

to the highest levels and are aiming 

to compete in elite and professional 

sport. 

1 Find something you enjoy. There 

are loads of local clubs and teams 

for a range of sports. There is 

something for everyone 

2 Keep consistent. Getting into a 

routine will help getting organised 

for everything you do in your daily 

lives and it is where you will see the 

most progress in training 

3 Make it social. The social aspect 

of sport is amazing! It will keep you 

motivated to train and every club 

has amazing people to meet and 

train with. 

4 Stick with it!! The first few weeks 

and months will be really hard as you 

build fitness and skills. Stick with it!! 

5 Find a balance between the ratio 

of training and rest. Don’t overload 

yourself or you will get mentally and 

physically burned out. Take time to 

balance work/ social/ training.

To lose body fat you need to create a daily 

deficit (intake of calories) by 300-500 calories 

per day. 500 per day over a week is 3500 

calories and that’s what it takes to burn 1lb of 

body fat. 

To gain some muscle is a surplus of 200-500 

calories per day and expect to gain a little 

body fat to, don’t believe the myths of you 

can have it all. For most, 99% of us have to 

choose a focus. The more muscle you have 

the faster you’ll burn body fat…tip of the trade 

right there. 

Next, you can eat how you wish…but know 

the more processed food we consume the 

harder we make it for our body to process. 

You’ll find greater volumes of food in 

wholesome form. So, fill that plate up with the 

good stuff as often as possible to help keep 

calories low and food volume high. 

Lastly, ENJOY what you do. Being healthy 

should be a benefit to life, not a drain and 

chore so find a way to exercise that fits your 

lifestyle.

Something to look forward to 

when we can meet again is our 

Winter Programme of talks. 

The programme runs twice a 

month from September to April. Each talk lasts for 

an hour with a variety of subjects and speakers. The 

year starts with “British Garden Birds”; later in the 

year, “Gardens Great and Small” and “Japan’s Wildlife”. 

History buffs may enjoy “Cuba and Panama”; 

“Independence, Revolution and Pirates”, or “Inn Signs 

and Local History”. 

If restrictions are relaxed, we hope to run some 

minibus walks for small groups from August onwards.

does your family have a 

‘photographs’ drawer?

I am a photographer and have been all my working 

life. As I can’t go out and take photo’s at the moment, 

I am sharing some insider tips with you. 

When I am not photographing rugby, or events, I scan 

and digitise old photographs. I also renovate those new 

digital images allowing old photographs to be seen by a 

new generation (see above). 

My mum had a photograph drawer. That is to say, a 

big drawer in the ‘welsh-dresser’ into which all family 

photographs went. I wonder how many of you have a 

similar collection. 

It was not until (sadly) she became incapacitated that 

I had proper access to it and all it contained. What a 

wonderful treasure trove I found. When you have a 

collection of photos like this, it makes sense to try and 

organise them. Ideally, one needs to: 

1. Identify the people in the pictures. If one person can 

be identified, perhaps they can tell you who the others 

are. 

2. Ascertain when they were taken. It is worth noting 

that machine prints often have the date of processing/ 

printing stamped on the back. 

3. Identify where the snapshot was taken. Shop names, 

landmarks, all can help. Sometimes the name of the 

photo shop will be stamped on the back. 

Photographs and photographic paper can be delicate 

and sometimes difficult to write on so it might be a good 

idea to obtain some sticky labels that you can write the 

details on and then attach to the photo – preventing 

further damage.

Nottingham Industrial Museum, the hidden 

treasure in the courtyards of Wollaton Hall and 

Deer Park have not let the Covid 19 emergency get 

them down as their dedicated team of volunteers 

continue to roll out the accolades. 

Earlier in 2020, when travel was still possible, a team 

from the World History Project travelled to the UK to 

collect material for a series of videos that form part 

of the curriculum in approximately 8000 schools 

across the world. 

To the delight of the researchers, presenters and 

production team some of the most significant and 

affecting of the videos features the story of the life 

of ‘Nailers’ in Victorian times. The story adapted 

and portrayed by NIM volunteer Avi Benn (aka Mrs 

Mary Ann Bird in her Victorian Kitchen exhibit) has 

been quoted by researcher, Professor Trevor Getz 

from University of San Francisco State as ‘giving 

an extraordinarily well-designed, pedagogically 

intentional, and compelling history’. 

This was further acknowledged as the Museum were 

named as Finalists in both the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ 

and ‘Small Charity – Big Impact’ categories of the 

East Midlands Charity Awards, on the same day! A 

fitting response to their hard work and dedication.

The 

Lockdown Tale 

By the time you read this we may, hopefully, be 

starting to get back to normal. For now though, 

here’s a lighthearted peek into our lockdown family 

life. 

All back to ours – 15 minutes after arriving back 

from university you couldn’t see an inch of the 

eldests bedroom carpet, even the dog nearly broke 

its neck trying to get in to say hello. The treat 

cupboard emptied within a day and apparently I have 

been under-feeding him for 19 years!!! On the plus 

side he can now cook and miraculously he no longer 

requires any of his clothes to be ironed. Amazing 

that! 

Son no.2 who is half man, half mattress, joined me 

for a dog walk – unheard of BL (before lockdown). 

It was lovely until the point he decided to ask if we 

could stop so he could roll a cigarette!!!!! Guess he’s 

figured out I’m too tired to argue with him (he was 

right!). He’s also lost 3kg now he’s not shovelling 

Doritos down at a rate of a family bag per day. 

I do realise that family time is precious, but if I have 

to listen to the futile scraping of a spoon on the 

bottom of an empty yogurt pot one more time, while 

I’m trying to watch telly, I am self isolating myself in 

my bedroom for the next two months!! 

Group chats – video chats are great for keeping in 

touch, although I did wonder who the scarecrow was 

on our work call yesterday, and realised it was me! 

It took my mum and me 40 minutes to set up a 

Zoom chat last Thursday. Finally we could see and 

hear each other when the clapping started outside 

so we had to say goodbye and rush out to join the 

rest of the street. Running from the back door to the 

front clapping like looneys. The drawbacks of an 

over-looked garden. 

Grooming – does anyone even bother washing their 

hair anymore?...At least I can put mine in a ponytail. 

Youngest son now looks like Oscar Wilde and oldest 

like a Spandau Ballet throwback. Even the dogs are 

suffering. Poor Harry looked like an electrocuted 

sheep. Alarm bells rang when I arrived home, turned 

on the lap top and saw the last google search; “can 

you cut a dogs hair with human clippers?” …fast 

forward three days and I can tell you the answer is 

yes …but the poor thing looks like he’s been in an 

industrial accident with a combine harvester. Who 

knew there was such a thing as a canine mullet?? 

Shopping – after the initial panic buying nonsense, 

we have all settled into a resigned routine around 

shopping. More of us are becoming inventive with 

ingredients and experimenting. Mushrooms instead 

of mince anyone? Rich Tea instead of Hob Nobs? – 

actually, no, that is a step too far. 

Garden centres are now open which is great news. 

However, trying to locate a growbag bought a whole 

new level of pain and I was reliably informed that 

compost is the new toilet roll! The cycle of lockdown 

life! 

Thankfully the shops seem to have remained well 

stocked with wine and beer, especially Corona Extra 

(mountains of that everywhere). However, we have 

avoided shopping as regularly as we normally do 

and this led to a red wine shortage and a small 

crisis in our house. Whilst emptying the larder 

looking for a cashew nut substitute (sunflower 

seeds in case you were wondering) I found a 

dusty bottle of mixed fruit cider circa 2011, kindly 

gifted to us by a home brewing friend. We dusted 

it off, popped the cork and convinced ourselves it 

tasted perfectly lovely. In all honesty under normal 

circumstances we would have probably used it to 

clean the drains (sorry Sylvain!), however right now, 

any port (or cider) in the storm will do.

Pretty in Pink 

We’re all spending more 

time in our gardens and 

it’s lovely to sit and relax 

surrounded by soft, calming 

coloured flowers and what 

is more calming and pretty 

than pink. 

There are so many shades of 

pink flower to choose, from 

the palest blush through to 

luxurious lipstick pink. Pink is 

an easy colour to combine 

– just avoid orange unless 

you like jarring clashes. Here 

are some of my summertime 

favourite pink flowers. 

Annual lobelias are usually 

blue but there are plenty of 

pink perennial types. These 

have upright stems and form 

neat clumps. Lobelia Compton 

Pink (pale pink flowers), Lobelia 

Russian Princess (shocking 

pink flowers and bronze leaves 

and stems) and Lobelia Tania 

purple-pink flowers) are all 

very lovely. Generally, Lobelias 

require moist soil in summer 

but good drainage in winter. 

This is achieved by adding lots 

of grit and compost to the soil 

There are many lovely pink 

hardy Geraniums to choose 

from. The low growing, sun 

loving Elke is particularly 

tough and make a lovely 

edging against a patio or path. 

Sherwood is taller and has 

intriguing, rolled up petals. 

Scent in the garden is a 

must have and the border 

pink Devon Wizard has a 

spellbinding fragrance and 

bold, bright magenta flowers 

that are also great for cutting. 

If you keep him dead-headed 

he will weave his magic right to 

the end of autumn. 

One of the most impressive 

pink flowers in my garden 

are the large, thistle-like, 

fuchsia-pink heads of the 

Stemmacantha that erupt from 

ping-pong ball sized silver buds 

in June and July. Once the 

flowers have finished the seed 

heads give prolonged interest 

and feed finches in winter. 

Another striking looking 

flower is that of the Japanese 

burnet (Sanguisorba obtusa), 

affectionately known as the 

Barbara Cartland flower in our 

garden as the long, feathery,

have graced the great lady’s outfits. 

The variety Rock and Roll is shorter 

with masses of upright pink flowers. 

Echinacea (coneflower) have 

become very popular over the last 

few years, but some of the new, 

exotically coloured varieties aren’t 

very hardy. I stick to the old, pinkflowered 

favourites like Rubinstern 

with its large pink daisy flowers and 

prickly, honey-scented cones. A 

must for bees and butterflies! 

With so many lovely flowers and 

shades to choose from there’s no 

reason why your garden shouldn’t 

be pretty in pink the whole summer 

long!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is crammed 

full of gems, but, in my opinion, there is one 

movie that perfectly blends all the elements 

that have made this franchise so spectacular. 

That movie is: Captain America Civil War. 

Currently available on Disney+, Civil War 

shows the Avenger’s darkest hour. When 

a legislation proposes that the Avengers 

become a government controlled team, the 

Earth’s mightiest heroes are cracked in half 

over the decision. 

Even though the cast is large, every single 

character is perfectly portrayed, both by 

the incredible talent on display, and the 

phenomenal writing. No matter how long their 

screen time, every character has a clear and 

compelling arc that is driven by motivations 

that encapsulate their legendary character. 

Directors the Russo Brothers impeccably 

balance and pace the movie, allowing time 

for the script’s complex and fascinating moral 

debates to breathe whilst also giving every 

character a moment, and let’s not forget those 

hero on hero brawls. 

Of which are jaw dropping. Every single action 

sequence takes full advantage of a character’s 

abilities and shows them off in the coolest way 

possible with industry best choreography. 

Whether it is the enthralling story, heart 

pounding action, or ethical debate at the 

backbone of this piece, you are never allowed 

to be bored in this perfectly balanced and 

concocted movie.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD 

Character studies are a tricky thing. Gaining an insight 

into a dark mind to provide food for thought while 

keeping your film entertaining with a unique style is an 

achievement not too commonly found across modern 

Hollywood. For a textbook definition on how to nail this, 

one needs look no further than Paul Thomas Anderson’s 

masterpiece from 2007: There Will Be Blood. 

At the beginning of America’s roots in the 20th century, 

a cynical self-made oilman makes it his mission to be 

able to drill on fertile lands to make enough money to 

set him up for life alongside his son. But when he butts 

heads with an obnoxious land-owning preacher and his 

drilling efforts go awry, Daniel Plainview’s inner demons 

begin eating at him. 

What makes this film exceptional is its subtle morbidity 

in its cinematography and soundtrack (composed by 

renowned Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood) which 

turns a seemingly simple narrative into a rollercoaster 

ride of emotion and characterisation. Right from the 

start, with a very time-taking montage of a younger 

Plainview’s gruelling mining efforts to striking black 

gold, it’s clear this film sinks its teeth into well-crafted 

symbolism and atmospheric-immersion. This is only 

completed by Daniel Day Lewis giving, what I would 

proclaim, the greatest performance of the 21st 

century yet as Daniel Plainview with his phenomenal 

John-Wayne-style vocal domination and bottled-up 

monstrosity. If you have any interest into how films can 

experiment with emotional ambiguity and character 

study, this is a must-watch and one I will continue to 

revisit for years to come.

MY CORONA 

On writing this I am acutely aware that I don’t 

own a crystal ball so have no way of knowing 

what the world will look like by the time this is 

published. Right now, we’re in the midst of the 

national Coronavirus lockdown and no one 

can predict what’s going to happen. What I can 

tell you, in no uncertain terms, is what the last 

couple of weeks in my house have looked like, 

and how far from the Apocalypse my little piece 

of England is. 

Forgive the hyperbole but I’ve gone straight to 

a place where I’m basically imagining living 

in a Mad Max movie. Hopefully this means I 

get a great car and some utterly over the top 

clothing, I think I could just about pull off postapocalypse 

chic. But only just. But it seems like 

a good time to rewatch all the films, just in case 

I need tips. 

Amidst all the uncertainty of what’s happening 

right now I’ve been impressed by just how well 

the kids have coped. Sure, they get bored of 

being in the house every day and not seeing 

their friends. Video chats help but it’s not the 

same as actually hanging out with your mates. 

Online games have allowed them another 

way to keep in touch and my oldest plays his 

mates at Fortnite with his headphones on which 

ironically is the loudest thing in the house as he 

has no idea just how loudly he is shouting to his 

friends. The hardest thing has been that they 

may well have broken up for the school year for 

good which means they miss out on all the end 

of term fun. 

My wife and I have both been keen to keep some 

structure in the house (more for our benefit than 

the kids to be honest) and we’ve made sure they 

still do their school work before they get the fun 

stuff. We’re no Victorians though, we very much 

spare the birch and don’t work them too hard. 

It’s times like these you start to really appreciate 

just what a skill it is to keep a classroom of 30 

kids under control (nice one teachers, you know 

who you are). But the structure definitely helps, 

especially as both my wife and I work full time 

so we can’t spend our entire days entertaining 

our children. And while I’m on it, no one in 

our house believes any of these idealised ways 

that you’re told to plan your days with a full 

house and no escape. I’m not pretending it’s 

easy. We’ve variously had screaming, shouting, 

doors being slammed, swearing, tantrums and 

threats. But aside from the wife and I, the kids 

have been amazing. 

So far exercise has also helped. Like everyone 

in the world we appear to be doing the daily 

Joe Wicks exercises and it turns out that my 

daughter is the fittest person in our house by 

a country mile. This is quite a kick in the teeth 

to be honest as my wife runs half marathons, I 

cycle every day, and my son plays more football 

than I thought was humanly possible. But every 

day we are reminded of the boundless energy 

of a 9 year old. 

Amidst all this uncertainty we have managed to 

spend an awful lot of time together, which in 

and of itself has been fantastic. As the pace of 

life has changed we have made sure that we 

take things a little less for granted, do things as 

a family unit, and make sure we keep in touch 

with extended family more often. And it feels 

like our local community is a little tighter, even 

if that’s just knocking on the neighbours door to 

check if everything is okay. Whatever happens in 

the future we’re all hoping that these little things 

stay with us. Although 

I’m still hoping for Mad 

Max’s V8 Interceptor.

children who are either 

going to keep me eternally 

young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing 

some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible

tfn triathlon club race to 

hawaii 

by TFN Triathlon Club 

Nottingham based TFN Triathlon Club have kept 

active during lockdown by taking part in a duathlon 

race to Kona, Hawaii (virtually, of course!) to raise 

money for local charities. 

Clubs from all over the UK entered the Corona to 

Kona race. TFN entered two teams consisting of 

novices right up to European and World champion 

level athletes. 

Kona is where the Ironman World Championships are 

held. Ironman is an iconic race where athletes cover 

2.4 miles swimming in the sea, 112km cycling and a 

26.2 marathon run, all in one go. 

The distance from Manchester (where the race 

will start) to Kona saw a total of 570 athletes in 18 

teams covering a distance of 2300km running and

by Alzheimer’s Society 

Jonathan’s Voice is a registered charity that 

was established in 2017 in memory of Jonathan 

McCartney who tragically and unexpectedly took 

his own life in October of that year. He was 35. 

Jonathan was a successful patent attorney. We were 

shocked when we subsequently learnt how many 

people each year die by suicide. In 2018 there were 

6,507 suicides registered in the UK, an average of 

18 each day and sadly more than in 2017. Suicide is 

more prevalent in men than in woman and is the most 

common cause of death in men aged 20 – 49. 

We came to understand that Jonathan had been 

struggling for a long time but felt unable to seek 

professional help. He felt that he should be able to 

manage on his own. Research studies consistently 

show how reluctant many people are to discuss their 

mental health, particularly with their employer. There 

may be many reasons for this but one is certainly a 

sense that there is a stigma around the topic. 

One of the prime aims of Jonathan’s Voice is to 

reduce that stigma associated with mental health 

and to empower people to speak up and reach out 

for help when they need it. The charity aims to raise 

awareness of mental health issues in workplaces, 

provide resources and support organizations to 

develop good mental health practice. We also offer

People affected by dementia in the East Midlands 

are experiencing crippling loneliness and are 

struggling to cope during lockdown, a survey by 

Alzheimer’s Society reveals. 

The charity is helping to alleviate the anxiety 

many face by making thousands of ‘welfare calls’ 

to provide support and information. In the East 

Midlands more than 6,000 calls have already been 

made by staff and volunteers determined to reach out 

to those in need. 

Jean Eastwood (pictured above), of Nottingham, who 

has Alzheimer’s and lives alone, said: “Because of 

living on my own the lockdown has affected my daily 

regime by restricting meetings, gatherings and my 

volunteering activities. 

“It has also affected my memory. I am forgetting to 

turn off electrical items such as the grill, the oven and 

the hot water switch in the last few days.”

allowed us an editorial to appeal

volunteer with our service. 

Self help UK, in partnership 

with Macmillan, run the Beyond 

Diagnosis service to provide 

emotional and practical support 

to anyone affected by cancer 

whether someone with a diagnosis or a family 

member, friend, anyone at all! Our volunteers can 

support on an ongoing basis or as a one off. 

Newly trained volunteer, Kathryn Holmes (pictured 

above), came to us by responding to our NG advert. 

She has been offering vital telephone support, at a 

time when our service has been needed more than 

ever. 

We asked Kathryn why she replied to the advert 

and Kathryn replied; “I hadn’t heard of the Beyond 

Diagnosis team before and, if I hadn’t seen the advert 

in the NG magazine I would never have realised how 

my personal experience of supporting someone with 

their cancer journey could help someone else in the 

future.“ 

We recruited a number of volunteers thanks to the NG 

advert, and our service is extremely grateful to the 

magazine for supporting us and enabling us to reach 

people all over Nottinghamshire.

is encouraging people to walk 12,000 steps a day 

to help them support the 1 in 2 people who will get 

cancer in their lifetime. 

As more people live longer with cancer, charity 

Maggie’s Nottingham is seeing an increasing need 

for practical and emotional support to help people 

cope with the changes that cancer brings. Maggie’s 

offers free support and advice on living well with 

cancer. This includes ensuring that people with 

cancer are really listened to, that they are offered 

tailored individual support, group support and 

practical advice. All of which is delivered by qualified 

professionals in a comfortable setting that enables 

people to meet others who understand what it 

means to be living with cancer too.

sing along with ellie is a big hit in care homes 

by NG Magazines 

Ellie Fessey has been busy during lockdown, live 

streaming sing along sessions into care homes 

and it’s proved to be a massive hit! 

Residents and staff have really enjoyed the sessions 

and the feedback has been really good. Even with 

a few teething problems with the technical side 

of things, Ellie has now reached out to all of the 

care homes in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and 

Chesterfield. One problem that kept cropping up 

was the lack of equipment required to do the live 

streaming (laptop with built in webcam and good 

Wifi internet access). So Ellie’s husband suggested 

making a DVD, using the webcam she bought for 

the live streaming, to record the sing along session 

within a little home studio. 

Almost all care homes have a DVD player and now 

all they need to do is put the DVD in and press play! 

Ellie says; “this is a perfect solution for the residents 

and the staff who are very busy during these difficult 

times and might not be able to devote as much time 

to recreational activities as they would normally.” 

Fast forward six weeks and Ellie, with help from her 

husband and friends, has now produced a DVD and 

songbook. These are now for sale on her very own 

website: www.singalongwithellie.co.uk, there is 

a sample video of the DVD there for you to view for 

free. Ellie has invested a lot of her savings into this 

project and is keen to publicise it to all our readers.

Ellie’s determination to reach out to residents in care 

homes is fuelled by a painful personal experience 

as she lost her mum recently to cancer. However, 

because she was in a nursing home where there had 

been confirmed Covid-19 cases, Ellie and her family 

were unable to visit her during the last few weeks of 

her life. 

All of Ellie’s singing work has come directly from 

her mum. Ellie explains; “we had countless sing 

along sessions together for years, whether in 

organised groups, in my car or just sitting at her 

bedside, we always sang together. She always has 

been and always will be my inspiration. Her journey 

through dementia has been really tough, I can’t 

begin to explain the impact this has on the person 

and their loved ones, utterly devastating physically 

and emotionally. So I am determined to make my 

sing along sessions happen one way or another, as 

I have witnessed time and time again, how music 

breaks though so many barriers for people living with 

dementia or indeed people without it.”

Housing 

Emily Tindall, a nurse at 

Scarsdale Vets, shares her 

advice on how to care for your 

rabbits. 

Rabbits require large amounts of space with grazing 

areas, access to outdoors and dry, well ventilated 

indoor areas. The usual hutches you can get from 

stores are usually not appropriate. Playhouses, sheds 

or even aviaries can be converted to be much more 

suitable accommodation for your bunnies. Rabbits 

need to be exposed to natural light to prevent vitamin 

D deficiency, so supplements or time outdoors needs 

to be factored into their daily lives, especially for 

house rabbits. Suitable housing is also necessary 

to prevent health problems such as upper or lower 

respiratory disease. Therefore avoiding small, dusty 

and dirty environments is vital while ensuring there is 

suitable weatherproofing. 

Feeding 

The diet of a domestic rabbit should mainly consist of 

three things: 

• Hay/grass (timothy hay being the preferred type) 

• Rabbit pellets 

• Mixed leafy green vegetables/herbs 

Hay and grass should make up the majority of the 

rabbits diet (a minimum of a ball of hay the same 

size as the rabbit or larger a day) but a handful of 

leafy greens/herbs and a tablespoon per kg of ideal 

bodyweight of pellets will lead to a well balanced diet. 

Treats, vegetables and herbs can be given but must 

be given in moderation and new food items should 

be introduced separately – one new item per week 

to allow time for any intolerances to show. Long term 

changes to the rabbit’s diet should made slowly over 

the time of 4-6 weeks to allow their sensitive digestive 

system to adapt appropriately and reduce chances of 

an upset stomach. 

Bonding 

Rabbits are highly social animals and due to being 

prey creatures, without a buddy to watch their back, 

a rabbit may never fully relax. However, bonding is a 

complicated procedure which can change for each 

pairing – therefore patience is key. A fast bonding can 

take as little as 2 weeks whereas more complicated 

ones can take as long as 3-4 months or, on rare 

occasions, 6 months to a year. 

It is important to note that both rabbits should be 

neutered before introducing to them to reduce 

hormonal influence. Bonding should be started a 

month after neutering to allow for enough hormones 

to leave the other rabbit interested enough without 

going overboard. A second cage will be needed near 

the original cage alongside neutral spaces for both 

rabbits to interact. Introductions should be gradual 

and closely observed at all times. 

Vaccinations and Health Checks 

Your rabbits should be fully vaccinated every year. 

There are two vaccinations available; a combination 

vaccination covering Myxo (myxomatosis) and RHD1 

(rabbit haemorrhagic disease) and a single dose for 

RHD2 (a separate strain) – both are important and 

should be given 2 weeks apart from one another. The 

combination vaccination can be given from as young 

as 5 weeks old whereas the single dose vaccine has 

to be given from 10 weeks. These vaccines need to be 

repeated yearly to ensure full coverage. 

Frequent health checks with the vet will help to assess 

your rabbit’s general growth and care. It is important 

to monitor how much your rabbit eats, drinks and 

poos to make sure you can spot any potential 

problems early on. It is also a good idea to get your 

rabbit used to being handled and having their paws 

touched which will make health checks and nail clips 

generally easier and less stressful. 

Flystrike 

Flystrike coverage is also important during the 

warmer months and can be easily applied throughout 

the year. Speak to your vet for when best to apply 

flystrike protection.

Jerry Green Dog Rescue is urging you to keep your 

dog safe in the heat this summer. Whether you’re 

off for a long trek through the countryside or 

simply chilling out in your garden, they want you to 

put your furry friend first. 

Shelley Wilks, Head of Welfare for the charity said: 

“It’s important to remember our dogs can’t cope as 

well as we do in the summer heat. Dogs can very 

quickly overheat and start showing signs of a heat 

stroke. Heat stroke, if left untreated, can be fatal. 

So it is really important to be aware of the signs and 

symptoms and get veterinary help straight away. 

“Our Dog Welfare Assistants will be ensuring our dogs 

stay safe and don’t overheat this summer by walking 

them while it is cooler, not over exercising them, and 

doing fun things with them that use a minimal amount 

of energy, such as, letting them splash around in 

our paddling pools and treating them to frozen Kong 

toys. These are all little things that you can also do to 

ensure your pooch stays cool and healthy while the 

sun is shining.” 

The rescue charity has more advice on what you 

can do with your dogs in the heat, as well as all of 

the symptoms of heat stroke to look out for on their

Back in April, nature enthusiasts from across 

Nottingham took part in the City Nature Challenge, 

an annual event documenting nature and helping 

us to better understand urban biodiversity. 

Nature spotters took to their back gardens, 

allotments, ponds and sheds to use the mobile app 

iNaturalist to record the urban wildlife that is usually 

overlooked. 

Over 2700 observations were made by over 100 

observers in Nottingham city, including 673 different 

species. Out of the ten areas across the UK that took 

part, Nottingham was the smallest city, but held its 

own, recording the most observations, species and 

observers per square kilometre. 

The most common recordings were of blackbirds, 

cow parsley and herb robert, regularly spotted at 

this time of year, but there were also some more 

unusually named species, such as a zebra jumping 

spider and farinose cartilage lichen. There was also 

one photograph of a European Orchard Bee, a solitary 

bee which was first recorded in the south east of 

Britain in 2017, and which could be the first time one 

has been spotted in Nottingham. 

The City Nature Challenge originally began as a 

competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles 

in 2016, and has now grown into an international 

competition with over 200 cities taking part. Even 

with the global pandemic preventing events taking place, 

over 41,000 people took part worldwide, recording over 

800,000 observations and 32,000 species.

thoughts on life in lockdown

As I write, we are entering the 11th week 

of lockdown. The widespread panic has 

eased somewhat but there is still huge 

uncertainty and anxiety about the future 

amongst my own friends and colleagues. 

Many of you reading this will be directly affected by the 

virus itself or by the threat of job losses and the financial 

hardship that may bring. The world economy is forecast 

to shrink by 3.2% which is the sharpest contraction since 

the Great Depression of the 30s. But if nothing else, hasn’t 

this time given us all opportunity to reflect and to evaluate 

what’s actually important? 

Whilst the furlough scheme has protected a vast majority 

of the population from redundancies this won’t continue 

indefinitely. In my own immediate family there are some 

furloughed and others working full time from home and 

the conversations have been interesting. But the common 

denominator is anxiety. 

so difficult. But I know of people who were literally crawling 

the walls at first. Then they learnt to adjust. A new normal. 

Speaking to clients who have young children squabbling 

in the background has somehow humanised professional 

relationships. 

And over the past fortnight business confidence has 

tentatively started to increase. Our clients are starting to 

hire again. Both Public and Private sector. Life will go on. 

I sincerely hope that any changes you make or have made 

during this period are positive ones which will ultimately 

enhance your life experience. I’ll leave you with a quotation 

from Kitty O’Meara which a friend shared with me; 

“And when the danger passed, and the people joined 

together again, they grieved their losses, and made new 

choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways 

to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed”

Thousands of people have been telling police 

‘what matters’ to them after Nottinghamshire 

Police encouraged communities to come forward 

to help shape local policing priorities in their area, 

as part of one of the force’s biggest-ever public 

consultation exercises. 

Nottinghamshire Police has been encouraging 

communities to have their say in the force’s new 

neighbourhood policing priority survey which is 

already helping neighbourhood policing teams to 

decide where they should be focusing their efforts. 

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Craig 

Guildford said: “Neighbourhood policing is at the 

heart of Nottinghamshire Police’s work and this 

initiative is an extension of our commitment to 

engage with the communities we serve to ensure 

that we’re continuing to focus on what matters most 

to local people. 

“Focusing on specific priorities within each 

neighbourhood is already helping to address issues 

as they are raised and this work will help to ensure 

that we can focus on more of what matters to local 

people as our ambitious recruitment plans continue 

and we introduce proactive policing teams into each 

area of the county.” 

How are local neighbourhood policing priorities 

decided? 

Neighbourhood policing priorities are informed by 

local crime and incident data before being agreed 

by each area’s neighbourhood policing inspector 

in agreement with local partners and elected 

members. 

The results from the survey will be used to help 

shape local policing priorities by enabling officers 

working across the county to better understand 

what matters most to the communities they serve. 

Once agreed, each area’s priorities are published 

on the Nottinghamshire Police website alongside 

monthly updates about progress being made to 

address them. 

The survey complements the existing public 

consultation activity undertaken by the county’s 

Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping, and 

is already being used to inform how local policing 

priorities are decided.
