CWA BUILDING 

The Chair of the Friends of the CWA Building in 

Hornsby Park, Judy Hopwood, is alarmed that Hornsby 

Council will demolish the National Trust listed CWA 

Building in Hornsby Park now that the membership has 

moved out. 

“I again challenge the Mayor Nick Berman of Hornsby 

Council to a debate on the future of the CWA 

building,” Judy Hopwood said. 

“The Friends are demanding that the Mayor respond 

immediately, before he demolishes CWA building,” 

Mrs Hopwood said. 

Mayor Berman agreed to the debate at the end of last 

year. “He now needs to honour his promise before 

the bulldozers roll onto Hornsby Park,” Mrs Hopwood 

continued. 

The Friends of the CWA Building spokesman said that 

its members were disappointed when a confirmed 

Mayoral Meeting scheduled for 1st February was 

cancelled at the last minute and put back until late 

February - well after the crucial decision-making 

meeting on the future of the CWA Building by the 

Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) on Thursday 23 

February.

I made my way to the Hornsby 

Library on Tuesday 14 Feb 2012, 

where Mayor Nick Berman took 

the opportunity of Valentine’s Day 

to have a ‘Library Lovers’ Day 

‘to celebrate life, love, literacy & 

libraries, and launch the National 

Year of Reading’. 

On arrival I first met up with 

Ian Huckel of Pennant Hills, 

being served tea by Joy Clarke 

of Berowra a Hornsby Library 

Assistant for 24 years. I was then 

swept up in the community wave 

all getting their morning cuppa and 

chatting about this and that. 

“Library Lovers’ Day gives us the 

opportunity to celebrate with the 

community. It is also the launch of 

downloadable eAudiobooks into 

your home,” said Cheryl Etheridge, 

Manager Hornsby Shire Council 

(HSC) Library Services.

wanted to ‘string us along’ with 

their music and songs. Yes, it was 

the Hornsby BUGS (Hornsby / 

Berowra Ukulele Group), who 

provided us with entertainment 

during the morning tea gathering. 

“We started in August 2011, have 

40 members, and meet every Friday 

morning at 10am at the Berowra 

Tavern. Beginners are given a 

quick lesson in the basics and we 

have spare ukuleles for those who 

wish to have a try before investing 

in a ukulele,” said Meg Molloy of 

Berowra. “Some come along who 

just love to join in the singing.” 

BUGS also raises money and with 

the assistance of Berowra Branch 

of Bendigo Bank and Pro Guitar 

and Sound of Hornsby purchased 

25 ukuleles for St Bernards 

School, Berowra. For the past two 

weeks BUGS had been teaching 

over 100 children to play. 

They are fundraising again, this 

time to purchase ukuleles for 

Asquith Girls’ High School where 

there is a lot of interest from the 

girls to learn to play.

Mrs Hopwood said, “We fear the 

agreed debate will suffer the same 

fate - delayed until after the building 

is demolished thus making it 

obsolete.” 

The people of the Hornsby shire 

spoke out against the demolition of 

the CWA Building when 75% voted 

in a recent poll to keep the heritage 

landmark. 

“Hornsby Council should listen to 

the ratepayers and preserve our 

history,” said a spokesman for The 

Friends of the CWA Building. 

“We can have the Pool and the 

CWA Building too,” said Judy 

Hopwood. 

“Let’s have a debate to once and for 

all inform the Council that the local 

community wants both the pool and 

the CWA building, and that residents 

want their voices heard,” Judy 

Hopwood said. 

“We must debate first before any 

action is taken against the muchloved 

CWA building,” Mrs Hopwood 

said.

new mobile 

website for 

phones and 

tablets 

Hornsby Council has launched a 

new mobile version of its website for 

iOS and Android-compatible phones 

and tablet computers including the 

Samsung Galaxy Tab and Apple 

iPhone and iPad. The site can be 

accessed at hornsbyshire.mobi. 

Free wireless internet is now 

available throughout the Council 

Administration Building and 

Council Chambers in Hornsby and 

is already available at Council’s 

libraries in Epping, Hornsby 

and Pennant Hills. 

“Standard websites can 

be quite difficult to use on 

smart phones and tablets,” 

said Mayor Nick Berman. 

“We wanted to give the 

community improved access 

to our website when they’re 

on the move.” 

A key feature of the new 

mobile website is a special 

function for residents to 

report a fault or issue such 

as a pothole or graffiti 

requiring attention using the 

global positioning system on 

their smart phone. 

Approximately 12% of hits 

to Council’s website over 

the last three months were received 

from mobile devices. In the last 

year, the site received more than 

820,000 visits. 

A link to the new mobile website 

has been posted on Council’s full 

website, hornsby.nsw.gov.au. In 

the coming weeks, the site will 

automatically detect compatible 

devices and give users the option to 

proceed to either the mobile or full 

website. 

From little things, big things GROW ... 

A simple email to A Current Affair from TBTW as a ‘last ditch effort’ to save the CWA Building from 

destruction by Hornsby Council resulted in an immediate response from Channel Nine and full coverage of 

the story last Saturday. That was the day that the CWA ladies were to have a sell off of all the contents of 

their beloved CWA building before the demo axe was to fall. 

Instead, a huge crowd of not only CWA ladies, but countless users of the building including the 50’s group, 

Laughter Club, Writers’ group, Highland dancers as well as supporters of the CWA Building turned up in 

droves to have their say on ACA. 

This was the community voice in action. “When your back is against the wall, you will do anything for what 

you believe in,” said an 86 year old lady and supporter of the CWA Building. “I am fully prepared to chain 

myself to the building to stop the demolition,” said another supporter from the 50’s group. 

What will the future bring? Will council succeed in destroying a building that so many people love?

THE SUNDAY COMPETITION FINAL 

BEROWRA Vs BEROWRA 

The Sunday Senior cricket Competition comes to a 

conclusion this weekend with the Final at Warrina 

from 12pm. 

Once again The Berowra Cricket Club has dominated this 

competition and it is a replay for last year’s thrilling final between Berowra 

Maroon and the Berowra Soccer team. 

In last year’s final it was the Soccer boys who produced an amazing upset 

by defeating the previously unbeaten Maroon team. The underdogs batted 

first, knocking up an impressive 7/260 from their 36 overs. In reply Maroon 

could only manage 229. 

In this year’s decider once again Maroon will go in slight favourites against 

the defending Premiers in this fiercely contested inter club rivalry. With the 

Maroon team mainly made up of former “aging” Berowra A grade players 

and the youthful Soccer team fielding many current Berowra CC higher 

grade players it also has a “Past vs. Present” feel about the contest. 

Whoever wins it will be a great day with the cricket club putting on a 

BBQ and drinks for the big day. Everyone from the local community is 

invited for what should be a great day of entertaining cricket at Warrina this 

Sunday.

Dear BT, 

Sean and I would like to congratulate Ray 

Hadley from Radio 2GB for 30 years in radio and 

broadcasting on February 28 th 2012. 

As a young man, Ray Hadley’s dream was to 

become a famous sports broadcaster. In 2012 

Ray has achieved that dream in sports and other 

forms of broadcasting. 

Ray has a daily program that combines people 

from Berowra with those all over Australia as one 

huge community. 

Ray Hadley is a great example that if you believe 

in yourself, all is achievable at any age in your 

life. Sean and I think Ray is a great inspiration to 

the young or not so young who want to aim for the 

“stars”. 

Ray Hadley’s biography advocates that anything 

you wish to achieve is possible. 

Sean and I believe that for Ray to be on Radio 

2GB and other broadcasting media for 30 years is 

an achievement and needs congratulations. Sean 

and I have listened to Ray call Rugby League 

within Australia, in many overseas countries, 

Grand Finals and like many others in our 

community this year will hear his sixth call in 2012 

of the Olympic Games. 

Ray Hadley has a great daily program. He 

helps those less fortunate as a quiet achiever 

without any self-promotion. In over 30 years of 

broadcasting, Ray has won numerous major 

awards. Sean and I feel that we know his family 

through the “theatre of the mind” that can only 

exist on radio. 

Ray Hadley on February 28 th 2012, with his 

courage, humour, generosity of “spirit” and the 

Aussie “knack” of broadcasting communication, 

celebrates why he is has achieved 30 years in 

media.

The CWA building is our only, local, publicly 

owned, meeting place. It is our ‘Town Hall’. It is 

providing very scarce public space for cultural and 

community groups. 

Hornsby Council is destroying this historical public 

icon because they want to build 111 parking 

places under the new Hornsby Aquatic Centre. 

The original estimate of $18M dollars included 

the 40 required parking places for swimmers. The

MY HUMAN FAMILY 

LORD MAYOR CLOVER MOORE MP is inviting people who have fostered 

or adopted dogs from council pounds or rescue organisations to submit 

stories and pictures of their four-legged friends. 

Inspiring stories of dogs’ struggle and survival will feature in the City of 

Sydney’s Community Photographic Project 2012, My Human Family. 

“We hope My Human Family gives people a real understanding of what life 

can be like for dogs that have been abandoned, surrendered or neglected,” 

the Lord Mayor said. 

“A dog can be a companion for life, and I encourage people to find a new pet 

through rescue organisations and council pounds so they can help save an 

animal’s life.” 

Submissions are open until 31 March and selected works will be exhibited 

online and at the Pine Street Creative Arts Centre Gallery, Chippendale, in July. 

The story of Blanche’s rescue seven years ago by Pam and Toshi Asai features 

on the website. Blanche was nearly put to death at a puppy farm because of a 

slight overbite. 

“Her first owner wanted a puppy and when she wasn’t a puppy anymore they 

lost interest,” Ms Asai said. 

“I gave her food that didn’t make her sick; I bought her a collar and lead 

because she didn’t have one and started taking her for walks to meet other 

dogs; she even went to a professional groomer for the first time in her life,” 

Ms Asai said. 

Blanche’s journey to a happy life was similar to that of English pointer Karla, 

who was rescued from a pound in Sydney by Ian and Jan O’Leary. 

“She was so pleased to have a home, but was scared of everything and used to 

roll over on each time someone walked by in case they would kick her,” 

Ms O’Leary said.

It took me 4 weeks 

and I finally had it all 

organised! Every date 

was carefully thought through, 

every clash had been resolved and 

I was feeling like everything was 

going to work out just fine and I 

was ready for the year ahead…but 

then it happened. 

A single conversation, a significant 

change in someone else’s schedule 

and everything suddenly felt like it was 

all in disarray again. 

When I was a child I used to love 

building block towers (as I am sure 

many other people did as well). I 

would work hard to ensure that my 

tower was as straight and tall as 

possible using all of the resources 

available to me. 

I would be pleased with myself and 

I would be enjoying the moment but 

then the unthinkable would happen 

– my brother would walk into the 

room and with one simple touch or 

kick everything would topple over, 

leaving nothing but a messed up pile 

of blocks. 

I remember vividly the feelings of 

anger, frustration and despair which I 

had over a simple pile of blocks and 

also I remember how unstable the 

things we rely upon can be. 

Disorganisation is something that 

all of us fight against and none of 

us delight in. Some people seem to 

be able to function in the midst of 

disorganisation better than others. 

Some people are able to conquer 

their personal disorganisation whilst 

others remain surrounded by piles 

of paper and very cluttered and 

unworkable calendars. 

I wonder how your plans are going 

for the year, how your personal 

management is shaping up – is 

everything in neat little boxes or nice 

straight block towers – or do you still 

need a little more work so that the 

confusion might be bought under 

control? 

I have found that the key is to know 

what I can do and what I cannot do: 

What I have the capacity to fix and 

what is just too much for me. I am 

glad that there is a tower of strength 

I can truly rely on – I hope you have 

found a similar strength to draw upon.

ROTARY STARTED THE CAMPAIGN TO RID THE WORLD OF 

POLIO IN 1985. 

To date Rotary Club members worldwide have contributed more than 

$1 billion. In 1988 the World Health Organisation, UNICEF and 

the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, joined Rotary 

as spearheading partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. 

More recently the Gates Foundation has become a major supporter 

giving Rotary a $100 million challenge grant. Rotary agreed to raise 

$200 million in matching funds by 30 June 2012. 

Since 1988 the incidence of polio has plummeted by 99 per cent, 

from about 350,000.infections annually to fewer than 650 cases 

in 2011.The wild poliovirus now remains endemic in only four 

countries, Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. However on 

January 13th this year marked a full calendar year without a case, 

paving the way for India to be removed from the endemic list, 

Other countries remain at risk Chad and the Democratic Republic 

of Congo and a small cluster of cases in China (which had been 

polio-free for a decade), attributed to a virus from Pakistan. 

Reaching children with the oral vaccine, in the remaining strongholds 

is labour and resource-intensive, due to many challenges poor 

infrastructure, geographical isolation, armed conflict and cultural 

misunderstanding.

The five key

aged care 

It’s a fact of life that many of us 

will need to one day face the 

daunting task of seeking aged care 

for someone close to us. At first 

the complexity of dealing with the 

personal, practical and financial 

issues may seem overwhelming, but 

there are positive ways to address 

these issues and there is help 

available to navigate through them. 

If you are considering aged care 

for someone close to you, there are 

five questions you need answered 

to ensure the best care at the most 

reasonable cost. 

Question 1 – what are the aged 

care options? 

Question 2 – what costs are 

involved? 

Question 3 -What will happen to 

the family home? 

Question 4 – what are the 

impacts on the age pension? 

Question 5 – how can ongoing 

income be maximised? 

There are numerous issues to 

come to terms with within each 

of the 5 questions above and it is 

not an easy area to try to navigate 

alone. Analysing all these issues 

and structuring the most effective 

solution takes some skill to organise. 

I find that there is a real risk of 

poor decisions being made if 

someone unfamiliar with the aged 

care environment either puts these 

issues in the too hard basket or 

fails to properly assess how all the 

factors interrelate. I would strongly 

advise anyone in this situation to 

seek professional advice from a 

qualified financial planner to find 

the right answers to these five critical 

questions.

SHORELINK WINS – 

GOLDEN SAFETY STAR 

AWARD 

Employees of Veolia Transdev company Shorelink Buses, in North 

Sydney were recently awarded the “Golden Safety Star Award - 2011”, 

a Veolia Transdev internal initiative, which recognises staff members who have 

displayed outstanding safety practices in the workplace. 

The inaugural program invited staff across Australia and New Zealand to 

nominate colleagues who have demonstrated exemplary safety behaviour. 

Across eight businesses, more than 25 staff received a Silver Safety Star Award 

in 2011. All Silver Safety Star recipients were shortlisted to just five Golden 

Safety Star finalists. 

Sion Bowker and Zane Young, of Shorelink, were presented with the honour in 

Melbourne on Friday 3 February. The Leading Hand and Apprentice Mechanic 

had identified a serious risk whilst working on bus engines at their Shorelink 

Depot. They worked together to build an effective set of pit covers, which have 

successfully minimised risk in the workshop. The winning nomination has made 

a significant impact on safety for the long term at Shorelink, creating a safer 

working environment for fellow staff.

WARM WELCOME … 

FOR EXPERIENCED EDUCATOR 

The new school year has bought a fresh face to Mt Colah Public School, 

with staff, students and their families giving a warm welcome to new 

principal Dr John Paterson. 

Dr Paterson brings a wealth of experience to the position, having spent 18 

years as a principal across three schools, most recently at Sir Eric Woodward 

Memorial School at St Ives. 

He has also held roles as a university lecturer and a consultant with the NSW 

Department of Education. 

“My personal philosophy of education is that I want to see a lifelong love of 

learning developed in the students,” Dr Paterson said. 

After meeting parents at the kindergarten orientation day, he said he was 

delighted to be at Mt Colah. 

“I have felt so welcomed by staff, students and families. So many parents have 

popped their head in to say hello and welcome, and the children give me 

friendly waves wherever I go around the school.” 

Dr Paterson outlined the many opportunities available to students, including 

an innovative program for Years 5 and 6 using netbook computers and a 

classroom wireless network. 

“Mt Colah is setting the standard in adopting new technologies in the 

classroom,” he said. “The classrooms are air conditioned and all have 

interactive white boards that the teachers use in their lessons.” 

He was also impressed with the school’s extensive grounds, and the fact that 

students and parents take great pride in keeping them beautiful. The school 

canteen was also able to operate every day thanks to parent volunteers, 

he said. 

Another much-valued asset is the Before and After School Care which caters 

well to the needs of working families. 

“There is such a strong community spirit here which is remarkable. People want 

to be involved in their children’s education and they are very welcome at 

Mt Colah Public School,” Dr Paterson said. 

“I am so impressed with the professionalism 

of the teachers and their personal interest 

and concern for each student.” 

Former principal Mr Bill Gillespie has 

taken up the position of principal at 

Elanora Heights Public School.

Greg has been involved with supporting school groups for the past 15 years.

prevention and early intervention work and believes that schools are a uniquely 

powerful change agent for families within the wider community.

playgroups in Berowra allowing those seeking time to develop friendships and 

networks another option. 

The school has begun with a very settled start with music, swimming 

and other programs well underway and overseas and local challenges 

for children and parents presented at its recent parents meeting.
