Ismael Ogando. My later impressionof Xenopolis, whichis quite a strong title/statementfor an exhibition in thecontext of the current zeitgeistmade me wonder wasis the core concept behindthe development of this idea/exhibition.Simon Njami. My theory, Ifone can call it theory, whichis more of a feeling than atheory; is that everyone is astranger in a city, and that, because of my upbringing,my personal story I alwaysfelt a stranger but not like villagerswould complain. I wasone in Switzerland, I neverfelt Swiss even if I’m holdinga Swiss passport. My Familyis from Cameroon, but I neverreally felt Cameroonian,I’ve never lived there thenI’ve been the rest of my life inParis but don’t feel French, Ifeel Parisian. If you look at the questions ofnationalism, identity etcetera,I always thought that peoplewere mistaken, they thinkthey belong to somethingand that something belongsto them, I wanted to demonstrateit is like it is. I curatedthe group show so to developan idea, a bit like a follow upwith my previous exhibitionWir Sind Alle Berliner, evenif that show was focusing ontopics of colonial issues, thatone was more about individualsand personal positions. Then so I asked strangers totell me about their Berlin andso to take on the hypothesisthat a city does not belong tothe state or whatever, it belongsto the people who ismaking it which in my opinionmakes the beauty of bigcities. For instance, if one goto New York, there no one willclaim to be American, theyclaim to be Newyorkers becausethey don’t like America,as if New York city was astate on its own. I think anycity is a state on its own, itcreates its own citizens. Inthe context of Nation andBorders, etcetera. I wantedto remind that wheneverpeople determine they havean identity they are mistakingthe term identity. Identityis not nationality or holdingtwo passports, a passportdoes not make my identity, what makes my identity is mylife and the different layers inwhich I’ve been forging whoI am now. That is basicallywhat the show is trying to remarkor trying to tell people.IO. Now that you mentionNew York, I got myself atfirst there this idea of a multiculturalcity, the city wouldamaze me by just going intothe subway to face so manyshades of skin colours, languagesand nationalities. butthen, I traced a pattern in thecity’s architecture on the wayI was growing up, in the subwaylines for instance, dependingon how you moveand where you ride to, thespace will be coloured in gradients, from light shades ofskin to darker shades andvice versa.
