kicks off, it is set to
takeover Horncastle
Arena over three
days in late August.

The show will be the first of
its kind for 2020, meaning the
turnout is expected to be larger
than usual.
Typically, the show sees 10,000
people through the doors over
the three days.

homes and lifestyles. A major
drawcard is an electric car giveaway
from HVS Motors worth
$26,000, with more prizes to be
announced closer to the time.

We first opened our doors in
1989 with the aim of supplying
a comprehensive 21-23 August 2020range of
Horncastle Arena,
top-quality fasteners – nuts and
bolts and engineering products
– at competitive prices to customers
throughout the country.
The formula worked, fuelling
continued growth which today
sees us operate from eight locations,
including our first North
Island branch, in Auckland.
The recent lockdown has
been tough on everyone, what
was the toughest aspect for
your business and its people?
How did you adapt?
Uncertainty. No one likes uncertainty
– it plays on people’s
minds because you never know
what’s around the corner. As an
essential business (there’s always
something that needs fixing)
we were fortunate to continue
operating, though in a limited
capacity – the business still took
a big hit. But everyone kept
their jobs and a pay cheque, we
sent people home, and those
who needed remote access to
our systems were able to keep
working.
Now that lockdown has been
relaxed, are you expecting
to operate differently? What
aspects of your business do
you think will change permanently?
Not really. We’re back into
the swing of things, back at
normal levels, thanks largely to
robust agricultural, engineering,
and construction sectors.
We’re about to launch a new
website to give customers a better
online experience, though

What role does technology
play at Blacks Fasteners?
Which technology has been
most helpful? Are you using
any new technology now?
Customers rely on us for great
advice and top-notch products
to progress their projects.
Does technology play a role?
Yes, but only in support of our
people and product delivery to
ensure our customers receive
the service they expect. Our
technology partner CCL keeps
the technology wheels turning,
our branches connected
and synchronised, and our core
systems available to the people
who need them, everywhere
they work. Cloud and remote
systems are a big part of that,
but everything begins and ends
with the customer, and you
don’t want technology for the
sake of technology to get in the
way.
Do you have a sense of what
the future looks like at Blacks
Fasteners?
I am confident about our
future. We continue to grow,
with exciting new products
in the pipeline and customers
who are optimistic about their
prospects. I think New Zealand
has a lot to be thankful for –
and not just our geographical
isolation at this point in history.
Tourism and allied industries
have taken a massive hit, but
the bedrock of our country –
ground and grass and the stuff
that grows from it – is in fine
form. We’ll be okay if we keep
sharing our good work with the
world.
