The Star Thursday July 30 2020 28 LETTERS AMI closures I read that 53 AMI branches will be closed throughout New Zealand, and that AMI is promising to bolster their online services. The reason given is that more customers are choosing to interact by phone and online, instead of visiting branches to talk with staff. Such a claim deserves careful examination. Missing from this narrative is the fact that during the Covid-19 lockdown period AMI customers had no choice but to conduct their insurance business online. I was one of them. Online communications increased significantly for AMI staff members during that time, predictably. Those of us who value face-to-face interactions when discussing complicated insurance matters – with the several superb staff members I’ve conversed with over many years – were unable to exercise that choice. With branch closures my choice has been removed altogether, as it has been for every other AMI customer. I will miss the prominently displayed AMI branch signs that stated how much AMI values face-to-face discussions with their customers. Was I misled? Was this just false advertising? I’m surprised that AMI decision-makers didn’t pause to see what the medium-term situation would be like in the level 1 Covid-19 environment for customer interactions with staff. Now we’ll never know. It may prove to be yet another case of moving too hastily, with a consequent loss of customers. In the meantime, I eagerly await notification from AMI of a refund of money for lower car claim costs during the Covid-19 lockdown period, as Tower Insurance is doing. How long should I expect to wait? Should I look online, or in my house mailbox? – Dr Gregory Lee, Avonhead. Contractors’ compo In reply to David Marra re: compo claim. I would be more concerned if no claim was warranted by Isaacs. Their margins are usually wafer thin and if they could stop work for five weeks with no loss, then the tender would have been high. These companies need to remain solvent through this period otherwise the workers will have no one to work for and would become beneficiaries of the welfare state. Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Fulton Hogan quarry The photo in The Star (July 16) should be a wake-up call for everyone across the district. That such a large quarry could be established so close to residential and commercial areas is astounding – and yet that is what the rules allow. I doubt anyone involved in any part of the application process could truly deny that it will have a negative impact on anyone living, working or even passing through the area. While there are likely many people involved in the process who would prefer not to have a quarry located there, the conditions that allow consent to be given were put in place many years ago, with the acceptance of our loose district and regional planning rules. All of us are guilty, because we have allowed the mantra that economic growth and infrastructure are more important than people and that building roads is more important than less intrusive transport options to prevail. I truly feel for the people caught on the wrong side of these circumstances but also recognise the challenges of needing to follow the rules regardless of the injustice of those rules.
