MORE THAN $3 million could
This comes as the city council
looks to readjust its priorities in
Historic landfill sites pose
Fears of
• By Louis Day
NINE CLOSED landfills
across Christchurch filled with
“unknown materials” could be
vulnerable to releasing waste
into rivers and the sea.
The historic landfills are
located in low-lying coastal
areas or near rivers, leaving
them at risk
of being
compromised
by flooding,
erosion, storm
surge and
increased
river flows.
In addition to the nine across
the city, there are also six landfills
which pose a similar risk on
Banks Peninsula.
The city council is currently
investigating and monitoring
the sites.
Jenkins fears this could lead
to a similar disaster to what
happened at Fox Glacier,
Westland.
In March last year, an
old landfill site burst open
following torrential rain and
flooding, littering the Fox River
and coastline with rubbish.
“All it takes is a major storm
and continuing erosion and we
could potentially see a situation
similar to Fox Glacier,” Jenkins
said.
City council manager of
resource recovery Ross Trotter
said the city council will be
attempting to identify the
“unknown materials” within
the sites. • Turn to page 4
TEENAGER MADDIE Collins
has had her second transplanted
kidney removed after her body
rejected it.
The 16-year-old is now reliant
on dialysis to keep her alive.
She has been battling the kidney
disease, nephrotic syndrome
for several years.
Maddie’s mother, Sarah
Manson-Collins, said the kidney,
which was transplanted in 2018,
was removed on Tuesday following
a steady decline in its function.
“What caused the ambulance
to be called was high temperatures
and pain that even my
at-home chemist supply couldn’t
get under control,” she said.
“The day finished with Maddie
just out of theatre with her
transplanted kidney out, leaving
her with no kidneys at all.”
Manson-Collins said Maddie
is in less pain since the kidney
has been removed.
“Just like last time when her
first transplanted kidney was
removed it’s great seeing her
pain free.
“This means with no kidneys,
no weeing. We are completely
reliant on dialysis to keep her
alive. Without dialysis she would
become toxic and die.”
Mrs Manson-Collins said
Maddie has asked to keep the
removed kidney.
“It will join her collection of
her three other kidneys that have
been removed. Her own two native
kidneys and her kidney that
Adam gave her.”
Maddie received what was
termed a ‘miracle’ second kidney
transplant in 2018 after being
Fire tragedy cause could be months away
• By Matt Slaughter
IT COULD be weeks or months
cause of the house fire which
killed two children in Burwood
Eight-year-old Braydon
Mulligan-Gibson and
9-months-old Arianna
Mulligan-Cooke perished when
the Vivian St house they were
in went up in flames on July 14.
It is believed the fire was
caused by a fan heater which
was left on in Arianna’s room.
Said Detective Sergeant Colin
examination around the heater
all that has been overseen by
detectives in that area.
“Those things are still part of
the ongoing investigation and,
to be fair, it will be, I would
suggest, weeks or months
before the fire investigators
conclude their report.
“To surmise on what may or
may not have happened, from
a police perspective, would be
unfair on the family, who are
going through a hell of a lot at the
moment and investigations are
Emergency services responded
to a report of explosives inside
a property on Hoskyns Rd
the road were evacuated from
Online tool
teaches
about
liquefaction
A NEW interactive online tool
has been developed to show
people how the ground in
Christchurch could respond in
another earthquake.
Liquefaction Lab uses extensive
information about ground conditions
gathered since the 2010 and
2011 earthquakes to visualise the
city’s vulnerability to liquefaction
under different conditions.
It shows different patterns of
land damage that are likely to
occur across the city by taking
into account the magnitude and
location of the earthquake and
groundwater levels.
Said city council head of strategic
policy Emma Davis: “This has
given us an exceptional understanding
of the liquefaction hazard
across our district, which allows us
to make informed decisions about
future land use and the building
controls required to manage risk.
“This information will be used
to guide design of our infrastructure
and where we place it.
“The online tool will also be
particularly useful for people
to understand the possible
liquefaction vulnerabilities of
properties in different areas of
the city.”
Historic landfills didn’t
have modern standards
• From page 1
He said it was part of the city
council’s ongoing management
and monitoring strategy. It would
also prioritise projects to mitigate
against the impacts of climate
change on the old landfills.
Trotter said the excavation of
the at-risk landfills and disposal
of them into modern ones was a
possibility and would be assessed
on a case by case basis. He added
that the costs of this approach
were likely to be “significant.”
He explained how historic
landfill practices have given rise
to this situation.
“These sites were not lined with
a barrier liner or capped with
an engineered layer as would be
expected today,” he said.
“This means that waste materials
deposited in these landfills was not
managed with modern standards
and could therefore be more vulnerable
to release of contaminants
into the environment.
Trotter said materials such as
metals, general municipal waste,
building waste and industrial
wastes were all commonly disposed
of in these landfills up until
the establishment of modern
regulations.
PLAN APPROVED: The city council is planning to spend
nearly $1.5 million shoring up the old Bexley landfill to
prevent further erosion.
In these situations, hazardous
substances like asbestos can also
be an issue he said.
The 15 potentially at risk sites
include the old Bexley Landfill
which is set to have nearly $1.5
million spent on it to prevent
further erosion happening to its
shoreline.
University of Otago associate
geography professor Mike Hilton
said the landfill sites posed a
threat to the environment and
recreational areas.
“Some of the rubbish dumped
could be toxic, like leftover farm
chemicals, industrial waste, who
knows? The Ocean Beach domain
landfill in Dunedin, for example,
contains asbestos and a range
of things you don’t want kiddies
walking over,” he said.
Hilton said this was a nationwide
issue.
THE PROJECT to restore Christ
Church Cathedral will cost
more than previously thought.
In 2016, it was estimated it
would cost $104 million.
Additional enhancements to
bring the cathedral’s facilities
to higher standards than they
were before the 2011 earthquake
are needed and will increase the
cost.
The exact cost of the
restoration is not known yet but
will be at the end of this year.
Said a Christ Church
Cathedral Reinstatement Project
spokeswoman: “We can confirm
that the project will cost more
than the $104 million estimate.
“We are not just putting back
everything as it was.
“The reinstated cathedral
will look very similar to the
pre-quake cathedral, but most
importantly [be] stronger, with
base isolation, offering greater
comfort, and the ability to use
the space more flexibly for both
spiritual and civic functions.
“The cathedral, tower and
spire will look much the
same as they did pre-quake.
The tower will have a lift and
stairs, compliant with current
standards. The materials for the
spire will be determined as part
of a later design stage,” she said.
The project has about $100m
in funding from grants and
pledges, including from the city
council and Government.
Part of the cost of the
restoration will be covered by
donors from across the world
but the Covid-19 pandemic has
caused fundraising to take a hit.
One donor has pulled out as a
result.
“We are conscious that many
abroad are financially impacted
Police trial
drug test
device
• By Matt Slaughter
A HANDHELD device to test
for methamphetamine, MDMA
and cocaine will be trialled by
frontline police in Canterbury.
The trial will run for six-months
and also be carried out in the
Auckland and Central police
districts.
The real-time drug-screening
tool allows officers to test for
“the three most harmful and
commonly used drugs on the New
Zealand market” while “working
in our communities”, police said.
In 2018, 95 people were killed
in preventable crashes where the
driver was found to have drugs
in their system that could impair
driving.
In December, the Government
announced it would give police
new powers to conduct random
roadside drug testing and to prosecute
drugged drivers in a bid to
save lives on the road.
Meanwhile, throughout July,
Canterbury police have been
clamping down on drivers who
have been drinking, including
trialling ‘micro-checkpoints’,
which require as few as one police
car and officer to operate.
The Jacinda factor and Covid
Christchurch bleeds red
in its support for the
Crusaders. Could the
city continue to bleed
the same colour in
September as Labour
seeks re-election?
Reporter Louis Day
THE WIDESPREAD support
for Labour and growing dismay
around the National Party which
was evident from the latest
Newshub-Reid Research Poll, was
mirrored throughout the streets
of Christchurch.
Labour rose in the poll to 60.9
per cent while National fell to
25.1 per cent.
The Lord of The Rings actor and
Hei Hei resident Norman Forsey
was an example of the strong
support for Labour which could
easily be found throughout the
city’s streets.
Forsey played Gaffer Gamgee
in the first movie of the criticallyacclaimed
trilogy, has also featured
on the Billy T James Show
and attended the Royal Welsh
College of Music and Drama
with award-winning actor Sir
Anthony Hopkins. He was on his
way home from the Hornby Hub
when approached by The Star.
Forsey also boasts being hired
When it came to politics, he
said it would be difficult for him
coming from “quite a liberal
country” to vote National.
“I am a Labour supporter,
I’m Welsh, if I voted National,
lightning would come down from
the sky and strike me down,” he
said.
On the other side of the city
in New Brighton, former gang
Dominic Knight say their vote will be going to “Aunty
James Quist echoed Forsey’s support
for Labour.
When asked who he was voting
for, Knight responded with
“Aunty Jacinda.”
“She has been good to us man,
Aunty Jacinda has got our back
eh,” he said.
Quist reinforced Knight’s comments.
“Aunty Jacinda puts food on
well,” he said.
Support for National was hard
to come by near Canterbury
ELECTION 2020 7
loom large for city’s voters
He was not impressed with
National’s response to the
pandemic and criticism of the
Labour-led Government.
“They are just trying to pick
out the small mistakes and blow
them out of proportion,” he said.
Psychology and philosophy
student
Angeline
Leversedge
scoffed when
asked if she
would consider
voting for
National.
Angeline
Leversedge
“God no,”
she said.
“I honestly
don’t see a situation where I
would support them. The whole
Covid situation showed how bad
they are, being focused on profits
as opposed to people.”
The 22-year-old, who was
still deciding which party she
would give her vote to was very
complimentary towards Ardern
and her leadership throughout
the term.
“She has done an incredible
job given everything she has had
to put up with, a terror attack,
volcanic eruption, a baby, Covid.”
While biology student Bryan
Menger was also undecided
on what party he would vote
for, National was an unlikely
recipient.
Bryan
Menger
“They
change their
leader as
much as their
underwear.
I did not
like Crusher
Collins back
when I was
a bit of a boy
racer and I
don’t like her now,” he said.
Since becoming an MP in
2008, Collins has developed a
reputation for being outspoken
and was nicknamed “Crusher
Collins” after proposing
legislation to ‘crush’ the cars of
persistent boy racers.
“I did not like Crusher
Collins back when I was
a bit of a boy racer and I
don’t like her now.”
– Bryan Menger
Twenty-one-year-old
astronomy student Lucinda
Shirreffs said she was leaning
towards Labour and thought
Collins seemed like “a bit of
Karen.”
‘Karen’ is a stereotypical name
used by millenials and those of
generation Z to describe rude,
obnoxious and insufferable
middle-aged white women.
Shirreffs implied National
showed a lack of appeal to her
generation.
“I don’t
know anyone
my age that
is voting
National, all
my friends are
either Labour
Lucinda
Shirreffs
or Green,” she
said.
“From
what I have
seen they [National] seem a bit
out of sorts right now, a bit of a
shambles kind of.”
While support for Collins and
the National Party dwindled
throughout campus, it was
strong throughout dog walkers in
Fendalton Park.
This was epitomised by Rob
Hempseed.
When asked who he would
be voting for, he responded:
“Definitely blue, not that I like
the Blues, I like the Crusaders.”
“People have been spoonfed
for too long and they have forgot
how to be self-reliant. There
is no such thing as poverty in
New Zealand, it is financial
mismanagement by the people
themselves.”
Hempseed thought the new
leadership of the party would
give it a boost heading into
September’s elections.
STAUNCH: Rob Hempseed
thinks National’s leadership
in Judith Collins and deputy
Gerry Brownlee is brilliant.
Lass is getting a walk.
“I think it is brilliant, at the
top you have got both genders
covered, male and female, and
you have got the North and
South Island balance. Judith
Collins doesn’t mince her words,
so action will be seen to be done,”
he said.
He spoke fondly of Ilam MP
Brownlee, who he claims to have
known since the senior MP was a
“small boy.”
“Gerry, he is another one who
is prepared to speak his mind, he
had a poisoned chalice with EQC,
he was not the only person there,
there were other people there that
should have had the skills.”
Andrea
Louisson, who
was walking
her dog
Claude when
approached by
The Star, was
also planning
to vote for
Andrea
Louisson
National.
“Especially
now with
Judith Collins,
I think she has got more going
for her economically. I think she
will be better for the country
economically because we need
to tighten the reins after the big
spend, and the virus is not going
to go away so we have to work
around it without more people
losing jobs,” she said.
She said she had voted for
Brownlee in the past as her local
MP and was likely to do so again.
However, amongst the congregation
of National supporters was
Philippa Greenman.
Traditionally she has been a
National voter, but the Government’s
response to the pandemic
has swayed her.
“I think it is the fact that she
[Jacinda Ardern] has done such
a good job, that has swayed me at
this stage,” she said.
This resulted in a frown forming
on the face of her partner
Trevor Ward who described
himself as a “blue leaner.”
“I am a capitalist not a socialist,”
he said.
Ward planned to vote for
Brownlee as his local MP which
was another point of difference
between the couple.
Stephen
Gemmill who
was sitting on
a sofa outside
the Fresh
Choice in Barrington
Mall
Stephen
Gemmill
said while he
was leaning
towards voting
for National,
the party would need a “miracle”
to win the election.
“The Todd, Nikki combination
never had enough time to work.
With Collins and Brownlee, it is
too late. There is less than eight
weeks, there is not enough time
to get the support they need, it
would need a miracle. I am a
National man, I have always been
a National man, but that is what I
think,” he said.
POINT OF
DIFFERENCE:
Philippa
Greenman was
celebrating her
birthday with
a walk around
Fendalton
Park with her
partner Trevor
Ward, who
have different
political
allegiances
going into the
election.
FAMILY TIME: John Cumberpatch, who was enjoying
some quality time with his grandchildren and dog Steve in
Lyttelton, was leaning towards National.
John Cumberpatch, who was
enjoying some quality time with
his grandchildren on London St
in Lyttelton, said he was leaning
towards National.
In his younger years, he
voted for Labour. However, this
changed as his political beliefs
altered with age.
“Historically I voted for Labour,
my dad was a trade unionist
and I campaigned for Norman
Kirk when I was 21. Then it came
apparent the socialist view of
the world was about cutting the
pie a different way, where I like
National’s approach, as it is about
making a bigger pie,” he said.
Catherine Patterson, who was
scanning through books at the
Whitcoulls inside the Hornby
Hub when asked for her views
leading into the election, said she
was leaning towards National
“more so now” after Collins was
appointed as party leader.
“I don’t think she will take rubbish
from people and she might
be quite good on the international
stage whereas I don’t think
Bridges or Muller would have
been,” she said.
Bill Chant, who said he had
“always been a Tory,” thought he
would also stick with National. He
saw Collins as a leader he could
support and thought Brownlee
had a good track record.
While sentiments of
support for National
could be found scattered
were overshadowed by
an overarching feeling of
Maree Beswick
sunshine and sights on
Sumner beach with his
son Jayden was Nati Pari.
He said he was voting for
“the
red party” and planned
to vote to re-elect Megan
Woods as MP for Wigram.
“I don’t mind the work
she has done for her
constituents,” he said.
Astrid Neumann,
strolling through Sumner,
was also leaning towards
Labour.
“I always have had
leanings in that direction
and they [Labour] seem to
suit me well,” she said.
Amongst what seemed
like a sea of Labour
supporters, were shades of
green.
Siouxzi Rowe from
Lyttelton said she was
voting for the Green Party
for environmental and
social reasons.
Gillian Wilkinson of
Sumner was the same.
“The environment was of
vital importance, without
a healthy environment
you can’t have a healthy
population,” she said.

We first opened our doors in
1989 with the aim of supplying
a comprehensive 21-23 August 2020range of
Horncastle Arena,
top-quality fasteners – nuts and
bolts and engineering products
– at competitive prices to customers
throughout the country.
The formula worked, fuelling
continued growth which today
sees us operate from eight locations,
including our first North
Island branch, in Auckland.
The recent lockdown has
been tough on everyone, what
was the toughest aspect for
your business and its people?
How did you adapt?
Uncertainty. No one likes uncertainty
– it plays on people’s
minds because you never know
what’s around the corner. As an
essential business (there’s always
something that needs fixing)
we were fortunate to continue
operating, though in a limited
capacity – the business still took
a big hit. But everyone kept
their jobs and a pay cheque, we
sent people home, and those
who needed remote access to
our systems were able to keep
working.
Now that lockdown has been
relaxed, are you expecting
to operate differently? What
aspects of your business do
you think will change permanently?
Not really. We’re back into
the swing of things, back at
normal levels, thanks largely to
robust agricultural, engineering,
and construction sectors.
We’re about to launch a new
website to give customers a better
online experience, though
Supported by
website orders are a fraction of
our overall business.
What role does technology
play at Blacks Fasteners?
Which technology has been
most helpful? Are you using
any new technology now?
Customers rely on us for great
advice and top-notch products
to progress their projects.
Does technology play a role?
Yes, but only in support of our
people and product delivery to
ensure our customers receive
the service they expect. Our
technology partner CCL keeps
the technology wheels turning,
our branches connected
and synchronised, and our core
systems available to the people
who need them, everywhere
they work. Cloud and remote
systems are a big part of that,
but everything begins and ends
with the customer, and you
don’t want technology for the
sake of technology to get in the
way.
Do you have a sense of what
the future looks like at Blacks
Fasteners?
I am confident about our
future. We continue to grow,
with exciting new products
in the pipeline and customers
who are optimistic about their
prospects. I think New Zealand
has a lot to be thankful for –
and not just our geographical
isolation at this point in history.
Tourism and allied industries
have taken a massive hit, but
the bedrock of our country –
ground and grass and the stuff
that grows from it – is in fine
form. We’ll be okay if we keep
sharing our good work with the
world.
Health board won’t
challenge over quarry
• By Devon Bolger
THE Canterbury District
Health Board will
not challenge Fulton
Hogan’s bid to change the
conditions under which
it must operate its quarry
near Templeton.
The Star recently revealed
Fulton Hogan has
appealed 15 conditions it
will be allowed to operate
the 170ha Roydon Quarry
under.
This includes the monitoring
of dust at the quarry
and the requirement to
prepare a report on the
results within one month
of a 12-month long monitoring
programme.
Other conditions Fulton
Hogan is appealing include
the requirement for six
dust monitoring devices to
be installed prior to quarry
activities occurring and the
company needing to ensure
heavy vehicle movements
leaving or accessing the
quarry use the direct route
comprising State Highway 1,
Jones and Dawsons Rds.
The CDHB told The Star
it would not be joining any
other parties who are appealing
the consent which
Simon Moore
means it will not be able to
speak or present evidence
at a future hearing.
“The Canterbury DHB
considers that the conditions
imposed by the
commissioners address the
public health issues raised
in the DHB’s submission,”
a spokeswoman said.
Nearby resident Simon
Moore said he was extremely
disappointed by
the CDHB decision.
“Do they not care? I
would have thought the
CDHB would have concerns
given all of the stuff
they are privy to and have
been saying over the years
but when it comes to the
crunch they don’t want to
know anything about it.”
The city council has
decided it will become a
party to Fulton Hogan’s
appeal to try and stop the
conditions of the resource
consent being changed.
In a statement, Fulton
Hogan South Island general
manager Craig Stewart said:
“Fulton Hogan’s goal for
the quarry remains to be a
show-case for other quarry
operations in New Zealand,
and will lead the way in
terms of best practice and
environmental sustainability.
“We are actively and
constructively engaged in
the Environment Court
process and recognise that
determines the outcome
from this stage of the
Resource Management Act
process.”
The resource consent
was granted in April by a
panel of five commissioners
appointed by Environment
Canterbury and the
Selwyn District Council.
Weedons resident
Stephen Bain has also
lodged a separate appeal
in the Environment
Court to overturn the
commissioners’ decision.
OUR PEOPLE
LUKE SMITH
Top lifeguard to use award to
share knowledge with others
Luke Smith is
Canterbury’s lifeguard
of the year. Matt
Slaughter caught up
with the 21-year-old
about working fulltime
as a lifeguard at
Taylors Mistake Surf Life
Saving Club and his
goals to inspire future
generations of surf
lifesavers
How long have you been surf
lifesaving and why did you start
in the first place?
I’m kind of like a secondgeneration
clubby. My dad [Chris
Smith] was involved when he
was growing up and I kind of
followed in his footsteps. Then
it’s obviously [been] years of
giving back volunteer time to our
local community, then gaining
qualifications to pass on to
lifeguards I work with.
How old were you when you
started surf lifesaving and why is
it important for people to learn
water safety at a young age?
Probably four-years-old.
I think it’s really important
especially in Christchurch,
where everyone lives so close to
the beach. For the juniors, it’s a
lot better with water safety and
how to be safe around the water
and those lessons on rules to
kind of follow when you’re at the
beach.
Tell me more about your
family’s involvement in surf
lifesaving and how they
inspired you to start?
My dad’s been involved since
he was a youth and then mum
[Lynn Smith] has coached since
my sister [Maia Smith] started
and then my sister’s still involved
now.
They’re all members of
Waimairi Surf Lifesaving Club.
Dad was involved when he was
growing up throughout. Then,
when my sister started to show
interest, they got back involved.
Dad ran the juniors at the club
for around 12 years and is now
a life member of the club. So his
give-back to the club and the
region has been huge and he’s
definitely still involved today.
What have been some of your
most memorable days or rescues
as a lifeguard?
There’s probably one three
summers ago. We had a day
where we just were faced with
lots of rescues in a short span of
time.
What stuck out, really, was the
teamwork of everyone around
us, not only the lifeguards on the
beach but the other lifeguards
that were just at the beach
enjoying the day also helped and
got involved. You don’t really
COMMITTED: Luke Smith
Saving Club is Canterbury’s
lifeguard of the year.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
stop. Everybody’s got that one
thing in mind and they push
towards that.
It was pretty non-stop for a bit
but it was awesome to be a part
of and help out our community.
Explain to me the feeling of
carrying out a rescue?
Obviously you’ve got the
adrenaline going into it, so you
feel quite good, but that’s why
we do our training and that’s
why we’re at the beach doing that
every night – so when we’re faced
with those situations we can
treat them as well as we can.
How do people usually react
after being rescued?
It’s different for each person
and obviously the severity of
each rescue on how they react
to it. Most people are really
thankful and that’s why we train
and do what we do, is to make
sure people are safe when those
situations occur.
If we’ve got that time with
the patient afterwards [it’s] just
educating them on, potentially,
what caused them to get in that
trouble. So if they’re faced with
situations in the future [they
know] how to deal with them.
What does it mean to be
named Canterbury’s lifeguard
of the year?
It’s great to be recognised in
an organisation where all the
lifeguards around are volunteering
their own time. It’s obviously a
great honour but I don’t want it
to take away from all the work
everybody else is doing.
What sort of work did you
put in to win the award?
For me, it was last season. I
definitely participated in lots of
courses and gained new awards,
but the big thing with that is [it’s]
not only for my benefit, but to
pass on to the lifeguards that I
work with too.
What opportunities could
winning the award lead to for
you?
I guess it’s showing new
members coming through what’s
available and then assisting them
down those pathways to reach
their best.
There are so many opportunities
and I think that’s the great part
particularly about Surf Lifesaving
New Zealand. There are so many
different avenues depending on
what your skill set is and what
your interests are.
What do you enjoy about
being a member of Taylors
Mistake Surf Life Saving Club?
It’s such an awesome office and
you’ve got so many environments
around you that you’ve got to deal
with. So, for us as lifeguards, it’s
really good to use our skills and
find those best swimming areas
that ensure public safety.
It’s just such a nice place to go,
so not a bad place to spend your
summer.
It’s such a nice, close-knit
community over there, so to
be able to give back to that
community is really cool.
What are your hobbies
outside of surf lifesaving?
I’ve played water polo for plenty
of years and then, obviously,
surfing and just being around the
water is what I like to do.
I represented the Canterbury
men’s [water polo] team and the
New Zealand schoolboys [team].
How has playing water polo
helped you in your role as a
lifeguard?
They kind of go hand in hand
quite well because, with the water
polo season being over the winter,
it’s a great way to keep your fitness
up. Being in the water and having
to use different skills really adapts
over the two sports really well.
What are your favourite
beaches in New Zealand?
In terms of Christchurch, it’s
pretty cool to be able to surf at
Taylors. We go to Gore Bay quite
a bit too.
What are your goals for
the future in terms of surf
lifesaving?
It’s continuing to empower
those volunteers and provide
and show the pathways of what’s
available for them.
It’s so cool to see those younger
ones coming through and
kind of finding their feet and
assisting them in areas where
they’re able to gain extra skills
or extra knowledge through Surf
Lifesaving New Zealand.
Not only is it myself winning
this award but it’s developing
younger guards and even
experienced guards coming
through. Working with them
and instructing them on how
they can get better.
Have you had experience as a
lifeguard overseas and do you
plan on doing this again in the
future?
Over the summer, I spent a
month in Maroochydore on the
Sunshine Coast. I earned my
lifeguard award over there, but
I’m really happy in my position
in Christchurch at the moment.
So, for now, I’m happy to help
out the local community as
much as I can.
What are some of the perks
that come with being a young
lifeguard?
That’s probably one of the
awesome parts about surf
lifesaving is that you look at our
office and we all get to operate
through the summer and it’s not a
bad spot being right on the beach.
There are certainly no
complaints on the place of work.
What tips do you have for
keeping safe at the beach?
When patrols are on, the
main thing [is] swim between
the flags. Us as lifeguards, we
know the place pretty well, so,
obviously, when we go and set up
our patrols we put the flags in the
best area of the beach possible
and they’re there for a reason.
For any kids swimming,
particularly, it’s making sure that
they’ve got someone with them.
It’s just that never swim or
surf alone mentality of always
having someone with you, so if
something does occur, at least
you’ve got someone out there.
Have you watched Baywatch
before and were you inspired by
the show?
Not really. It was before I
probably even watched TV, so
it didn’t have too much of an
impact.

INFLUENCER
Providing services to assist her clients to feel “fabulous”
about themselves is a passion of Margaret’s and she
thrives on finding ways to enhance their experience
and achieve their desired results.
As a beauty/massage therapist and business owner,
Margaret provides a boutique service for her clients
who relish in the atmosphere of a quiet, private clinic
environment.
How did you start in personal
care?
My professional career began with providing respite
care for a large company as well as part time in the
hospital side of a rest home. I believe it’s the little
things, which make a big difference to a person’s day.
Years ago at an appointment with my beauty therapist,
she told me about a job she was offered to do massage
for a sports therapist. I joked with her and said, I
would like to do that and the rest is history. My drive
to support client’s health from the inside out is the
primary focus of my business today.
“I’ve been in the health and beauty industry for almost
20 years. While working as a massage therapist I
trained in beauty therapy. I’m very lucky to have had
two amazing mentors over the years who taught me
many skills and a lot about health. Beauty therapy
and skin correction is a large part of what I do. It
includes pampering facials and advanced non-surgical
skin correction treatments, including Dermal Micro
Needling, IPL and Plamere Fibroblast therapy.
What’s your motto?
My personal and business motto is “I want everyone
who enters my doorway to leave feeling better than
when they arrived,” Margaret says, with a sincere smile.
My work doesn’t feel like work at all to me as I love
what I do and am blessed with wonderful clients.
How do you spend your down time?
That is a work in progress as I enjoy my job so much.
When I do have “down time”, I spend time with my
family and I like to go dancing, both modern jive and
tango. I love going out to watch the rugby at the local
pub and gardening is really important to me, it’s my
happy place. We are so lucky in Christchurch, there are
so many things to do.
LIVING
LIFE
SCIENCE
The University of Canterbury (UC) has launched a
new science podcast series to meet public demand for
answers to the big issues facing our world.
UC Science Radio is a new weekly podcast featuring
interviews with UC scientists on topical issues relating
to their areas of expertise and research. It addresses
some of the big challenges facing our society, both
locally and globally, and what science is doing to help.
Hosted by UC Master of Science student and US
Fulbright Scholar Molly Magid, the shows are
challenging but also entertaining and accessible to
listeners who may not have a science background.
Topics include the science behind volcanic eruptions,
micronutrients for stress, helping endangered species
find their perfect match, ever decreasing glaciers, and
what plastic is doing to our sea life.
Five episodes have been released so far with new
episodes forthcoming.
Episode 1: Designing cities
for better health
Human Geography Professor Simon Kingham
talks about the impact of city spaces on our mental
health, why cycleways are thriving in post-quake
Christchurch, and his role as Chief Science Advisor
for the Ministry of Transport.
Episode 2: Making sense of
molecules
Structural chemist Associate Professor Sarah Masters
talks about her work as a ‘molecular detective’ where
she investigates how molecules behave, what they do,
and how we can use them to create everything from
new technologies and materials to developing lifesaving
vaccines.
Episode 3: It’s like Tinder…
for birds!
Conservation geneticist Associate Professor Tammy
Steeves talks about finding the ideal mate for some
of Aotearoa New Zealand's most endangered native
species, and about how kindness is changing the way
we do science - for the better.
Episode 4: Rocking out with
volcanoes
UC volcanologist Associate Professor Ben Kennedy,
an internationally recognised expert in physical
volcanology and an award-winning teacher, talks
about the science behind eruptions, his travels to the
world's volcanic hotspots, and how teaching can be
driven by fun and games.
Episode 5: Ending our love
affair with plastic
UC environmental chemist Associate Professsor
Sally Gaw explains the damage plastic is doing to our
wildlife and environment, and where it’s ending up –
from rainwater and sea salt to the insides of tuna and
mackerel. Assoc Prof Gaw, who has spent her career
studying environmental contaminants, also talks
about all the antibacterial soap and hand sanitiser
we’re using at the moment and why it’s not so great for
our waterways.
OVER 60’S
UNITS
If you are considering a change of
scenery, it may be useful to consider the
different types of properties available to
you. When it comes time to downsize
the family home, you might consider
a retirement village or buying a new
home. One option you may not have
considered is an over-60’s unit. The
Council identified a need for accessible
housing for senior members of the
Christchurch community within the
private sector. Zoning land which allows
for over-60’s housing is one way of
addressing these needs.
SUDOKU - EASY
As the name suggests, over-60’s units are
designed with people over 60 years of
age in mind. The purpose of these units
is to provide a self-managed community
for seniors as an alternative to retirement
villages. The units are usually smaller
in size and a single storey. What makes
over-60s units unique is that there is
an encumbrance registered on the title
requiring that the occupants of the
house be 60 years of age or older. An
encumbrance is a restriction that is
placed on a title, and prevents the owner
from doing certain activities. In the case
of over-60’s units, the encumbrance
EXERCISE THE MIND
SUDOKU - MEDIUM
QUICK CROSSWORD SOLUTIONS ON PAGE 6
prevents certain people from living in the property. To qualify
to live in an over-60’s unit, you need to be either over 60 years
of age, or qualify for a permanent supported living payment
on health grounds. Partners, spouses, dependents, and
caregivers of a qualifying person can also live in the property.
Over-60’s units are different from retirement villages or
Council-managed flats. Over-60’s units are properties that
you own. This means you won’t have to pay any deferred
management fees when you sell the property, like you would
for an occupation right agreement at a retirement village.
However, you also don’t get the benefit of the support services
retirement villages usually provide. Over-60’s units are
commonly owned by way of a unit title, which is a group of
properties in a single development that share common areas.
Unit title properties often have a governing body, called a
Body Corporate, made up of all the unit title owners and is
responsible for such matters as managing any common areas.
Body Corporates often have special rules about what you
can do with the property, such as whether you can have pets.
It is important that you check these rules before you buy a
unit title property, to ensure that you are willing and able to
comply with them.
If you are considering buying an over-60s unit, or you already
own one, you should keep in mind that if you decide to sell it
there is a limited pool of potential buyers and this may make
the property more difficult to sell. On the other hand, with an
aging population, this type of housing may be in demand for
years to come.
It is possible in limited circumstances to have the
encumbrance removed, allowing anyone of any age to live in
the property. However, as the encumbrance is registered by
the Christchurch City Council, the decision to remove the
encumbrance lies with the Council.
If you are considering buying or selling an over-60’s unit, it’s
best to talk to a specialist first. The team at Harmans Lawyers
has the knowledge and experience to help you navigate this
process. Please contact Phillipa Shaw on 03 352 2293 to
arrange a time to discuss your situation.
RESEARCH
WHITE ISLAND ROCKS HOLD
CLUES TO ERUPTION RISK
New research indicates cracked rocks on Whakaari (White
Island) act like valves allowing gas to escape and releasing the
build- up of pressure that triggers volcanic eruptions, new
University of Canterbury research has found.
The finding, which could allow more accurate monitoring
and forecasting of future eruptions, is based on a study of
rocks ejected from the Bay of Plenty island volcano during an
eruption in April 2016, well before the volcanic explosion on 9
December last year which led to the deaths of 21 people.
A team of University of Canterbury (UC) scientists and
Frontiers Abroad students (visiting UC from United States
colleges), together with GNS Science and international
researchers, collected the rocks from the island in 2016 and
studied them, including testing to see how easily they crack
and how gas travels through them.
The team discovered that cracked rocks can act like valves –
opening and closing – to allow gas to escape.
Lead researcher Dr Ben Kennedy, UC Associate Professor of
Physical Volcanology in the School of Earth Sciences, says
the findings are “remarkable” and will help scientists better
understand the behaviour of the volcano and interpret its
sounds and tremors.
“We hope our research will ultimately lead to more accurate
volcanic monitoring and forecasting of future eruptions,” he
says.
“We discovered that the rocks from Whakaari behaved in
a unique way. Cracks formed easily, allowing gas to escape,
but because the minerals were mushy the cracks sealed again
when pressed together by the weight of the volcano, forming a
valve.”
The research, published in the journal Geosciences this
month, allows scientists to link certain
earthquakes to the movement of fluid
through valves within the volcano. This
could allow them to track and monitor
a build-up of activity that signals gas is
moving through the volcano.
Associate Professor Kennedy says
when the rocks were examined under
a microscope the composition of very
small minerals encrusted in and around
the cracks could be seen.
MERCEDES-
BENZ ON A
CHARGE WITH
ELECTRIC SUV
BY ROSS KIDDIE
Don’t put me down as a non-believer, but I have always
been a little sceptical that burning fossil fuel is the cause of
all our climate change and global warming issues.
But the recent coronavirus alert levels 3 and 4 lockdown
indicated that without so many cars on the road, air quality
improved, and pollution, which is claimed to affect climate
change, was lower.
I’ll take that on the chin and going forward I’ll be more
aware of how burning oil products seemingly affects our
everyday life.
I guess that’s where electricity comes in, cars with motors
as opposed to engines have become the vehicles of choice
for those who vehemently believe electric vehicles are the
way of the future.
EVs aren’t new but they are resurgent at the moment, and
you can buy anything from a Nissan Leaf to a Tesla; inbetween
there are a myriad of other options and one which
clearly sits in the luxury car class is the Mercedes-Benz
EQC 400, also branded as a sport utility vehicle.
It’s no surprise that Mercedes-Benz is marketing its first
EV down under, it’s only a matter of time before more
luxury car brands ply their electric technology globally.
However, a big surprise is the EQC 400’s price tag. At
$142,900 it’s not cheap, but when you think a few years ago
a new Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi iMieV was around half
that price, and today’s fully electric Kia Niro and Hyundai
Kona both sit around $70k, the EQC 400 seems like a real
bargain.
I think it is, if you take into account what you get in terms
of luxury, specification and technology, it is an absolute
champion financially.
The EQC 400 is all electric, there’s no hybrid technology
here, it is powered by two electric motors, one up front and
one in the rear obviously creating drive to all four corners.
Pumping out 300kw and a massive 760Nm of torque,
power is developed from zero revolutions, the instant
you depress the accelerator full power is available;
consequently, the EQC 400 is quick, it will launch to
100km/h from a standstill in 5.1sec, and to make a quick
highway overtake it will blast from 80 to 120km/h in
4.5sec. Of course, that’s not how we drive on an everyday
basis but it’s nice to know if you need the energy it is there
on tap. That’s some of the appeal of electric, there is a
vibrancy you don’t get with internal combustion engines,
unless you are buying a vehicle with an incredibly high
performance engine.
Mercedes-Benz wouldn’t have built a fully electric vehicle
had it not been able to provide the performance and
luxury akin to what the brand represents, and the EQC
certainly delivers in those areas.
It also has to be user-friendly, just like the raft of EVs that
are plying our market it’s a simple procedure to plug in at
home or any of the charge stations that are being rolled out
nationwide.
On the road the EQC drives like any normal SUV, and the
way you drive is no different to any other Mercedes-Benz
SUV. The controls and instruments are pretty much the
same. There are even several drive modes that you choose,
from economical to sport. I only tried sport for a short
burst and came to the realisation you don’t really need that
mode; sure it delivers a vivid response but even in standard
mode there is an underlying feel of power.
The downside of using the wonderful burst of energy is the
rapid depletion of battery energy. Mercedes-Benz rate the
EQC 400 as having a 430km range, that would be under
the most favourable operating conditions, you need to be
mindful that stop-start driving and exploring acceleration
will quickly deplete the batteries of their energy.
In terms of cost to replenish battery supply there are
complicated mathematical equations to consider,
everything from service provider to night and day rates,
but a rough figure of around $5 to $10 to fully charge from
zero per cent is a guideline.
Not only does the EQC 400 have the latest generation
mechanical and electronic technology, it is also the
quintessential SUV for today’s busy lifestyle. It has space
and functionality that will appeal to the modern family,
and it is loaded with all the gadgetry that will satisfy an
owner for decades.
It’s fair to say the EQC 400 is an enjoyable drive, and those
who do go down that road, so to speak, will reap many
benefits along with knowing they are doing their bit for the
environment.
As for me, I need to get over range anxiety, I was very
mindful of the distance I travelled, knowing that at
some point I’d need to find a charger. That’s a matter of
reconfiguring the way my mind is mapped and adjusting.
Covid-19: ‘Let’s be careful out there’
Staying safe
rules seem
to have been
forgotten
THE COVID precaution at
the Countdown supermarket
near the airport should be a big
reminder we are not immune to
an outbreak in New Zealand.
Health authorities appeared
relatively confident yesterday of
there being a very low chance of
community transmission from a
South Korean traveller who has
tested positive to Covid-19.
The traveller had visited the
supermarket while he was in
Christchurch last week on route
from Auckland to Seoul via
Singapore.
As of the time of writing
yesterday, South Korean officials
believe it was in Singapore where
the person was infected. So if
that was the case then anyone
shopping at the Countdown airport
store has nothing to worry
about.
But we only have to look to
Victoria to see what can happen
when Covid-19 gets into the
community – particularly when
From the
WARNING: Hill Street Blues’ Sergeant Phil Esterhaus.
parts of the population have a
don’t care attitude.
The world was warned of a
second wave but in fact we are
still in the grips of the first wave
and we will be until a vaccine
becomes available.
New Zealand was extremely
fortunate in that we were isolated
geographically, our Government
acted relatively swiftly to move
through the various restricted
levels and into lockdown, and
most people were compliant.
All of those factors combined
meant we wiped out Covid
fairly quickly.
But since lockdown was lifted
we have become vulnerable
again – largely from people
returning from overseas, and
home grown complacency.
Go into a supermarket or a bar
and you will see how complacent
we are.
Social distancing is no more,
supermarket shoppers pick up,
squeeze and put down items that
someone else will come along
and put into their trolley.
The golden supermarket shopping
rule of looking, selecting
and then picking up items has
gone.
How many businesses now
have hand sanitiser available for
customers?
At the weekend I watched an
elderly guy blow his nose and
then open a door with his hands.
He could have easily pushed
open the business’s door open
with his foot or back. But he
wasn’t thinking.
If Covid re-emerges in our
community we will have to
adjust very quickly otherwise we
will be another Victoria.
As Sergeant Esterhaus in Hill
Street Blues would say: “Let’s be
careful out there.”
- barry@starmedia.kiwi
July 30, 1979 – Carless
days for motor vehicles were
introduced to combat the second
‘oil shock’ of the 1970s. They
did little to reduce consumption
and were scrapped in May
1980. Under the legislation, all
private owners of petrol-driven
motor vehicles were required
to select a day of the week on
which they would not use their
car. A coloured sticker on the
windscreen indicated the chosen
day. Those caught on the roads
on their designated day off could
be fined.
July 31, 1976 – Following
in the footsteps of Jack Lovelock
and Peter Snell, John Walker won
gold in the 1500m at the Montreal
Olympics. Walker’s medal was
the first Olympic track gold won
by a New Zealander since Peter
Snell’s 800m and 1500m double
at Tokyo in 1964.
August 1, 1992 – Lorraine
Moller wins Olympic bronze. At
the age of 37, Moller ran the race
of her life to place third in the
marathon at the Barcelona Olympics.
In searing heat, she made
the 4km climb to the stadium
and crossed the finish line just
over a minute behind Valentina
Yegorova of the Unified Team
(representing 12 of the 15 former
Soviet republics) and Yuko Arimori
of Japan.
August 2, 1992 – Barbara
Kendall wins gold at Barcelona.
Windsurfer Kendall was New
Zealand’s only gold medallist at
the Barcelona Olympics. She was
just the second New Zealand
woman to win an Olympic title,
40 years after Yvette Williams.
Kendall competed at four more
Olympic Games, winning silver
at Atlanta in 1996 and bronze at
Sydney in 2000.
August 3, 1941 – Finnish sailing
ship seized as war prize. Five
days after its arrival in Wellington
Harbour, the four-masted barque
Pamir was seized by the New
Zealand Government, which
regarded Finland as ‘territory in
enemy occupation’ (Finland had
joined Nazi Germany’s invasion
of their mutual enemy, the Soviet
Union, but was not formally a
member of the Axis powers). The
Pamir remains the only ‘enemy’
vessel ever to be seized by New
Zealand. Due to wartime shipping
shortages, the barque was pressed
into service as a New Zealand
merchant vessel, mainly carrying
wool and tallow to San Francisco
and Vancouver.
August 4, 1923 – The opening
of the 8.5km Otira tunnel
completed the long-planned
transalpine railway between
Christchurch and Greymouth. At
the time, it was the longest tunnel
in the southern hemisphere and
the sixth-longest in the world.
August 5, 1914 – New Zealand
enters World War 1. When Germany
failed to withdraw its troops
from Belgium, Britain declared
war on Germany on August 4.
The New Zealand Government
was informed of the outbreak of
war just before 1pm on August 5
(NZ time). At 3pm the Governor,
Lord Liverpool, announced the
news from the steps of Parliament
to a large and enthusiastic crowd.
Most New Zealanders regarded
themselves as British and Britain
as home, so there were few doubts
about fulfilling our obligations to
the Empire in its moment of crisis.
AMI closures
I read that 53 AMI branches
will be closed throughout
New Zealand, and that AMI is
promising to bolster their online
services.
The reason given is that
more customers are choosing
to interact by phone and
online, instead of visiting
branches to talk with staff.
Such a claim deserves careful
examination.
Missing from this narrative
is the fact that during the
Covid-19 lockdown period
AMI customers had no choice
but to conduct their insurance
business online. I was one of
them. Online communications
increased significantly for AMI
staff members during that time,
predictably.
Those of us who value
face-to-face interactions when
discussing complicated insurance
matters – with the several
superb staff members I’ve
conversed with over many
years – were unable to exercise
that choice. With branch
closures my choice has been
removed altogether, as it has
been for every other AMI
customer.
I will miss the prominently
displayed AMI branch signs
that stated how much AMI
values face-to-face discussions
with their customers. Was
I misled? Was this just false
advertising?
I’m surprised that AMI
decision-makers didn’t pause
to see what the medium-term
situation would be like in the
level 1 Covid-19 environment for
customer interactions with staff.
Now we’ll never know.
It may prove to be yet
another case of moving too
hastily, with a consequent loss of
customers.
In the meantime, I eagerly
await notification from AMI of
a refund of money for lower car
claim costs during the Covid-19
lockdown period, as Tower
Insurance is doing.
How long should I expect to
wait? Should I look online, or in
my house mailbox?
Fulton Hogan quarry
The photo in The Star (July
everyone across the district.
That such a large quarry
could be established so close to
residential and commercial areas
is astounding – and yet that is
what the rules allow.
I doubt anyone involved in any
part of the application process
could truly deny that it will have
a negative impact on anyone
living, working or even passing
through the area.
While there are likely many
people involved in the process
who would prefer not to have
a quarry located there, the
conditions that allow consent to
be given were put in place many
years ago, with the acceptance
of our loose district and regional
All of us are guilty, because
we have allowed the mantra
that economic growth and
infrastructure are more
important than people and that
building roads is more important
than less intrusive transport
I truly feel for the people
circumstances but also recognise
the challenges of needing to
follow the rules regardless of the
injustice of those rules.
Chicken drumsticks are hard to beat
This recipe is a healthier
way to make chicken
drumsticks taste
delicious – they are
marinated in buttermilk
and garlic for 24 hours
before roasting. This
ensures the chicken
tenderises and gets
infused with delicious
flavours
Buttermilk roast
chicken with garlic
6 servings
Ingredients
2 cup buttermilk
2 tbsp olive oil
10 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup fresh parsley, minced
1 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper, freshly
ground
12 chicken drumsticks
Directions
Combine buttermilk, olive
oil, minced garlic, minced fresh
parsley, salt and black pepper in a
small bowl and whisk really well.
Place chicken drumsticks in
a large freezer bag, pour the
buttermilk marinade over the
chicken and distribute evenly
over all chicken drumsticks.
Squeeze as much air out of the
FLAVOURFUL: Buttermilk roast chicken with garlic. Sticky sweet chilli drumsticks.
freezer bag as possible and seal
the bag.
Refrigerate the marinated
chicken for 24 hours.
After your chicken has been
marinated, preheat oven to
200 deg C. Place chicken in
a medium-sized casserole
dish – and pour all of the
marinade on top and around
the chicken. Roast for 30-45min
(depending on your oven), until
chicken juices run clear and the
drumsticks are browned and
scorched in spots.
If needed, grill for about
5-10min to get more color.
Serve immediately, use the
sauce from the pan.
drumsticks
4 servings
Ingredients
¼ cup sweet chilli sauce
3 tbsp sweet soy sauce
1 tbsp garlic, minced
½ tbsp ginger, minced
1 tsp pepper
1.5kg chicken drumsticks
To Serve
Bok Choy
Rice
Directions
Preheat oven to 180 deg C and
line a baking tray with baking
paper.
Mix the marinade ingredients
together in a bowl.
Pour over the drumsticks and
massage all over.
Place the chicken drumsticks
onto the lined tray. Pour over any
excess marinade on top of the
drumsticks.
Bake in the oven for 45-
50min or until the outside of the
drumsticks are caramelised and
GARDENING 35
Time to attack the thatch on your lawn
EARLY AUGUST is the time to
attack the thatch on your lawns.
Thatch is caused by several factors,
including grass type, excessive
watering, soil compaction,
high or low soil pH, or overuse of
fertiliser and pesticides.
Remove a core of soil from the
lawn with a trowel or shovel and
measure the depth of the thatch,
which is the layer of dead grass
above the soil line.
A layer that is 1cm to 2.5cm
thick can be removed with a stiff
lawn rake. Deeper layers may
require a power rake.
The best time to de-thatch is
just before the grass begins a
period of active growth, which is
usually early spring.
For lawns with more than 3cm
of thatch, power rakes or vertical
mowers will need to be used and
can be hired.
Mow the lawn a little lower
than usual. If needed, water it to
moisten the soil.
If you use a thatching rake, pull
the blade-like tines across the
lawn, cutting through the thatch.
Work in sections, then remove
the debris.
If you are using a power rake or
vertical mower, adjust the cutters
to slice just through the thatch
layer. Check cutter depth after
the first metre.
Run the machine in parallel
rows over the lawn and then
again at 90 deg to the first pass.
Remove debris with a lawn rake.
Control pests and diseases with winter spraying
THE BEST antidote to a pest and
disease-ridden spring garden is
thorough winter spraying.
Nothing toxic is required —
simply give plants a good dowsing
of copper spray, followed a week
later by an application of spraying
oil. Both of these are regarded as
organic.
Repeat three times over the
winter months to kill both overwintering
insect eggs and disease
spores. It’s especially important to
spray fruit trees (including citrus),
roses and other deciduous plants,
as well as any plants badly infested
with insect pests or disease
LAYERS: Thatch is dead grass which sits above the soil
line. It should be removed during the winter before active
spring growth. It is also time to dig over vacant areas.
Over-seed with a good-quality
grass seed to improve the lawn’s
health, vigour, and appearance.
Other tips for early August
EDIBLES
• Dig over vacant areas and leave
last summer.
In fact, you should spray the
entire garden, but wait for any
winter-flowering plants to finish
blooming before you begin.
Garden pests lurk in the most
unexpected places.
Check the undersides of
leaves for scale insects, and leaf
sheaths and stems for mealybug
and scale.
Look for silvering of leaves on
evergreen shrubs and trees including
rhododendrons, camellias
and pieris. This silvering indicates
the presence of thrips. Spray oil
to clean these up and reduce
for frosts to pulverise the lumps.
• Apply lime to vegetable garden
plots where green crops were dug
to increase worm activity.
• Spread a general fertiliser on
areas to be planted next month.
• Check peach, apricot and nectarine
buds frequently. Spray with
their numbers for spring. Collect
diseased fallen leaves and place in
the rubbish bin (not the organics
bin).
Spray the ground around infected
plants with copper spray to
help kill disease spores.
Winter-hardy weeds can
overrun the garden, making
control in spring a nightmare.
Spray with fast-acting glyphosate
or dig out hard-to-kill weeds such
as dock.
Once weeding is done, fork
compost through soil and mulch
with a 10cm layer of fine bark or
pea straw.
copper before bud burst to protect
against curly leaf. Same spray
for bladder plum.
• In warm areas begin
sowing in a protected position
lettuces, peas, silver beet and
spinach.
• Sow outdoors hardy herbs, tender
herbs under glass.
• In warm areas or towards the
end of the month sow under glass
courgettes, eggplants, peppers
and tomatoes.
• Plant out asparagus, globe
artichokes, cabbage, cauliflower,
lettuce, onions and silver beet.
• Divide and replant rhubarb.
• Fertilise citrus generously
towards the end of the month.
ORNAMENTAL
• Plant deciduous trees, shrubs.
• Complete pruning of roses and
cutting back of all perennials.
• Complete mulching garden
beds.
GENERAL
• Slugs and snails abound, spread
slug bait
• Ensure all-seasons oil
and copper sprays have been
applied to all fruit trees and
roses.
Use your outdoor living areas
all year round
• Warm & dry in winter
• UV protection for summer
• Stylish & permanent
• 5 year warranty
Top of the table league clash
DEFENDING champions
Linwood Keas face a top of the
table clash against the Riccarton
Knights in premier club rugby
league on Saturday.
The Keas, Knights and the
Northern Bulldogs are in a
three-way tie for top spot on the
Massetti Cup table at the halfway
mark of the regular season.
The Keas inflicted the
Bulldogs’ first
loss of the year
at the weekend
courtesy of a
24-10 result at
Murphy Park
in Kaiapoi.
Matt Sauni
Matt Sauni
was the chief
destroyer for
the four-time
defending champs, finishing
with a hat-trick as they turned a
tenuous 8-4 halftime lead into a
convincing win.
The Knights, which carved
out their fourth straight victory
on Saturday with a hard-fought
18-12 win over Halswell Hornets
in front of the Crosbie Park
faithful, will need to be at their
very best to beat the Keas at
Linwood Park.
LONGTIME Canterbury
rugby league servants
Frank Endacott and
Gary Clarke have been
recognised again for their
service to the code.
Endacott, 72, has been
made a life member
of the New Zealand
Rugby League, while
Clarke, 78, has received
a distinguished service
medal from the national body.
Said Endacott: “I feel quite
humble about it. It’s an honour
and privilege to receive it. It’s
also recognition for all of the
people who have helped me
through the years.”
He is now the 89th to have
received life membership of
Dangermen for the Knights
could be their centre pairing of
Rex Hifo and Reuben Te Amo.
Hifo scored twice against the
Hornets, while Te Amo – better
known as a middle forward for
the Knights and Canterbury
Bulls – dotted down for a fourpointer.
The Knights led 12-6 at
the NZRL since
Stan Brice became
the first in 1920.
Brice was a
Wellington league
administrator, and
notable cricketer
who played five
matches for New
Zealand.
Clarke, who like
Endacott is a life
member of Canterbury Rugby
Football League, said he too was
honoured by his award.
“I’d like to thank Canterbury
for nominating me for the award.
I’m very honoured to have
received it.”
Clarke, a Kiwi in the late
1960s, and a former Canterbury
the break.
Hornby Panthers moved to
fourth place on the Massetti Cup
ladder with a thrilling 32-30
eclipse of Eastern Eagles at Leslie
Park.
The Panthers trailed by eight
at halftime but came home
with a wet sail. Centre Muipu
coach and New Zealand
selector, has been a
generous sponsor and
supporter of the code for
many years.
He also has a
renowned rugby league
museum with hundreds
of pieces of memorabilia,
which hosts reunions,
and NRL figures and
former players when
they venture across the
Tasman.
Endacott coached Canterbury
before coaching the reins of
Warriors reserve grade side in
the club’s debut year in 1995. He
took over the premiership side in
1997 and 1998.
He also coached the Kiwis
Nati and teenage prop Caius
Faatili both notched two tries
for the victors.
They meet the Hornets on
Saturday at Halswell Domain.
The Eagles have a home game
at Wainoni Park in an east side
derby against Celebration Lions.
Eastern, Papanui and
from 1994-2000
which included two
World Cups in 1995
and 2000. He was
also at the helm of
the hugely successful
English club Wigan
in 1999 and 2000,
when he was named
Super League’s
coach of the year.
This year Endacott
is also helping coach
the Northern Bulldogs in the
Canterbury club premiership.
Endacott and Clarke have
also been recognised outside of
league for their service to the
community.
Endacott was made an Officer
of the New Zealand Order of
Celebration are in a share of
sixth spot with 1-4 records after
five rounds.
Celebration Lions edged
Papanui Tigers 26-24 for their first
win of the season last weekend,
after being down 6-18 at halftime.
• All matches start at 2.45pm.
Impreza still carries bargain price
FOR AS LONG as there has been
a Subaru Impreza, there’s also been
an affordable way into buying one.
Subaru New Zealand has always
listed a budget model, it started off
around 2006 with a $25k figure for
the mid-size liftback/wagon with
permanently engaged four-wheeldrive
and, yes, a high and low
transfer case.
Of course, over the years, and
with inflation, the Impreza is now
listed at $32,490 for the one and
only Sport model, but that is still
an amazing price for what you get,
Subaru’s problem with this car over
the years is continuation of supply.
It’s certainly the company’s best
kept secret, it is a package that has
stuck with me over the years, and
although I’ve never had the outlay
to buy one I have been responsible
for several sales, and I still see it
as the first choice if I was in the
market for new car.
The Impreza has just undergone
a very mild facelift, it gets a little bit
of extra tech and has had a minor
cosmetic facelift.
Elsewhere it is still the
same versatile model that has
commanded healthy sales. Cars
which have longevity on their side
only get there by being desirable,
and the Impreza over the years has
succeeded against big odds – the
sport utility vehicle market.
Part of what makes the Impreza
desirable is its driveline, even
though the high/low gearing
system has long since gone, it is
still four-wheel-drive, and the
horizontally-opposed engine layout
is, in itself, a point of difference.
Boxer engines have been
Subaru’s design choice since the
Omega/Leone of the 70s. Today,
the company builds both fourcylinder
and six-cylinder flat
engines in varying capacities, and
some with turbochargers, in the
base model Impreza’s case it is a
naturally-aspirated 2-litre unit with
quad camshafts.
It is rated by Subaru with 115kw
(6000rpm) and 196Nm of torque
developed at 4000rpm. While
these figures don’t seem anything
special you have to bear in mind
that boxer engines are honest
and torquey from low down and
that’s what makes them appealing,
they feel strong from beneath the
accelerator pedal. Drive is delivered
through a seven-step continuously
variable transmission.
Subaru have developed this
gearbox to the point where it
doesn’t feel like CVT. It works
much like a traditional torque
converter automatic, and there are
even paddle shifters so that the
driver can manipulate the gearing
for every likely driving situation.
Left to its own engine
management protocols, the
transition of power through the
CVT is smooth, and seamless and
STYLE: The Subaru Impreza has a traditional hatchback
rear.
From family cars to work trucks,
and supercars to fixer-uppers
no matter what you're looking for
you can find it all with Drivesouth.
SUBARU IMPREZA SPORT: Four-wheel-drive and boxer engine is a tempting mix.
power is relatively unimpeded; of
course, there are driver operated
push-button intelligent drive
mechanisms which can alter the
flow of power – intelligent or sport.
Sport mode does tend to keep the
engine unnecessarily busy, while
the intelligent setting works out
the best engine operating pattern
depending on accelerator pressure.
Subaru have also been proactive
in keeping the boxer desirable in
terms of fuel usage. Today, the
2-litre unit is rated with a 6.6-litre
per 100km combined cycle average,
that’s as good as any 2-litre petrol
inline engine and adds desirability
into the equation. I was relatively
gentle with the Impreza during
the time it was in my care, and
it was used mostly in central
city conditions, but with one
lengthy open road journey west to
Hororata.
On the highway, the fuel usage
readouts list at around 5l/100km
with the engine loping over at
just 1600rpm in the tallest part of
the gearing. When I took the car
back to the dealership my average
was showing around 7.4l/100km,
which makes Subaru’s claim quite
realistic.
Even though the Impreza is an
easy car to drive at all speeds, it
punches above its weight when it
comes time to accepting the back
road challenges and the twisty
• Price – Subaru Impreza
nature of our high country corners.
Four-wheel-drive adds an element
of extra grip all of the time, not
just on slippery surfaces. With
that comes the benefit of fourcorner
independent suspension,
and with high grade spring and
damper technology the Impreza
feels nimble and agile. There is
little body movement in a corner,
and the suspension does a quality
job of balancing ride comfort with
the firming needed to control
gravitation force.
Directed into a tight corner,
the front steers with direct turnin
and solid feedback at the
steering wheel, grip to the rear
is pronounced as the suspension
can be felt working dealing to any
uneven surface.
The Impreza also gets high grade
Bridgestone Turanza tyres (205/50
x 17in), and while their diameter is
a little on the small side, you don’t
need low profile tyres on this car,
it handles beautifully and is kind
to the occupants in terms of on
comfort.
Those on board also get the
benefit of all the features you’d
expect in a 2020 car. Major
features include keyless entry and
ignition, auto stop-start, multifunction
displays and smartphone
adaptability. All new Subaru’s
sold in this country get the clever
Eyesight technology which is a
camera-based driver assist safety
system which goes a long way to
earning the Impreza a five-star
Australasian New Car Assessment
Program rating.
The Impreza represents amazing
value, and benefits from Subarus
determination to make cars that
are just that little bit different yet
are engineered to capably fill many
roles.
There are few cars in today’s
market that compete with the
concept of Impreza, and they sit
near what you would describe as a
crossover or SUV.
I like traditional sedans and
liftbacks, the Impreza would suit
me fine, I’ve always regretted
not buying one of the entry-level
models, I guess it’s not too late,
but it’s a matter of lining up all the
financial ducks in a row.
Good storage ideas are abundant and all
manner of products are available to make
homes more minimalistic. While it’s nice to buy
your storage from designer homewares stores,
the likes of The Warehouse and Kmart sell many
simple products for masking clutter. Fabric
storage cubes are a great start for disguising
the clutter. They fit neatly into shelves and
wardrobes and thanks to competition from the
big department stores, can cost $10 or less
each. You’ll also find wicker, felt, cotton, woven
and metal baskets for a song.
Another clever idea, is to buy a cheap set of
melamine shelves for use in your wardrobe. A
set of shelves does much the same job as an
expensive wardrobe fit out. You can move the
shelf heights to accommodate shoes and boots.
It looks good, but costs little.
Another wardrobe organisation is a Wardrobe
Starter Kit from Hardware stores. While you’re
there, check out bicycle storage hooks as well.
As well as being practical, storage products
can make a design statement. The important
thing is to be consistent. don’t, for example,
buy storage cubes in different colours. If you’re
looking for really clever home storage ideas
take a tip from the tiny home movement.
Catherine Foster who wrote Small House Living,
downsized her life to under 90sq m and has
interviewed Kiwis who live in architecturally
designed homes of that size or smaller.
Each and every house in Foster’s book uses
storage effectively to tame their belongings.
Some have done it on the smell of an oily rag,
Selling your property?
First impressions count,
get rid of the clutter.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know that getting rid of clutter
is one of the keys to selling property fast and at a good price. Good storage
systems can look cool in their own right, and help organise your clutter.
+
sometimes buying pre-cut heavy duty plywood
that only has to be screwed together, she says.
Garages and lofts are house vendors’ friends.
The garage is one of the few places in the house
that buyers won’t be put off by a little extra
stuff, but the more that can be hidden away in
stacked crates the better. Consider using flat
pack cupboards that can be taken with you.
“The most effective way of using these is to
find a wall where the whole area can be covered
floor to ceiling,”
“Simple carpentry like this is dIY level if you’re
handy, or get a handyman in for a few hours, but
make sure it is excluded from the list of chattels
on the sale agreement.”
Loft spaces are often wasted space in Kiwi
homes. A relatively cheap way to open up
the space is to install a loft ladder. You will be
amazed at what people use the additional
storage space for, once they’ve installed it.
Cheap clever storage ideas aren’t just limited
to the interior of the house, garage and loft. The
Warehouse, Mitre 10 & other hardware stores
sell garden storage to hide away things usually
left outside.
Foldable garden storage boxes that cost
from around $99 can be used to store garden
tools, outdoor cushions and pool paraphernalia.
The next step up is a cheap garden shed for
around $200 upwards from Mitre 10, Bunnings
Warehouse and other stores.
Finally, if you’re looking for more inspiration
Google “storage ideas”, search the same on
Pinterest, or check out books on the subject
from your local library. You’ll be amazed at how
many everyday items can be repurposed for
storage at the same time as adding design
excellence to your home.
