Work starts
to remove
pontoons
WORK HAS started to remove
damaged pontoons that have been
stored at Naval Point.
The city council was contacted
by a member of the public in November
2019 about the pontoons
and has been working to find
a permanent solution for their
disposal.
The damaged pontoons are being
broken down and three of the
four components recycled.
A contractor began removing
the pontoons on Monday,
with work expected to take
three months depending on the
weather.
Head of parks Andrew Rutledge
says it has been important to find
a cost-effective way to remove the
pontoons in order to improve the
surrounding Naval Point environment.
“We’ve worked with Lyttelton
Port Company to contain the secure
the pontoons until a suitable
option for removal was found.
“Taking the pontoons away will
improve the overall look of the
area.”
The pontoons, which are made
of polystyrene, wood and steel
encased in concrete, came from
the Magazine Bay Marina, which
was damaged by a storm in 2000.
Firefighter’s 15-years recognised
• By Bea Gooding
IT WAS a strange feeling for
Ken Frost when he didn’t
respond to the sirens of the
Governors Bay Fire Station for
the first time in 15 years.
Affectionately known as
“Frosty,” the former station officer
announced his retirement
this year, and his efforts were
recognised with a long service
and good conduct award for the
Governors Bay Fire Brigade.
Serving his community every
day was an aspect of the job he
was going to miss.
“It’s an honour to receive that
award, it’s been very enjoyable,
but I do have mixed feelings
as it’s the end of 15 years as an
operational officer,” he said.
“But on the other side of it,
there comes a time where you
step down, and I thought now
was my time.
“A couple of days after I
resigned the siren went off. It felt
strange not rushing off to my car
and not going to the call.”
Frost began his journey as a
rural firefighter with the Governors
Bay Volunteer Rural Fire
Force in February 2005.
In July of the same year, he
transferred to the NZ Fire Service
and progressed through the ranks
to become a station officer in 2017.
END OF AN ERA: Governors Bay Fire Brigade station
officer Ken Frost has been presented with medals
recognising his service.
He started volunteering when
he met fellow brigade members
at a local hotel who encouraged
him to join the service and participate
in training.
In spite of “not being one of
the younger lads,” he completed
his recruits course in his early
50s, followed by the officer’s
practical course in his 60s.
“I was the principal corrections
officer at Christchurch
Men’s Prison for 18 years, and
I felt that the two seemed to go
hand in hand,” he said.
Frost was grateful for the level
of support and camaraderie between
brigade members during
the toughest of times.
He described his service
during the September 4, 2010,
and February 22, 2011, earthquakes,
Port Hills fires and now
Covid-19 as the most rewarding
moments of his FENZ career.
However, the toughest parts
were attending the “carnage”
at motor vehicle accidents,
especially if they were fatal, or
“purple calls,” which entailed
incidents such as suicides.
“It was rewarding to help people
in their hour of need providing
technical expertise and liaising
with the public,” said Frost.
“FENZ has a good support
system in place, but it never gets
easier. Unfortunately, I’ve attended
quite a few fatal accidents
and purple calls – they’re the
hardest and I used to dread going
to those.”
His biggest supporter, though,
was his wife Kathie, who was
known for her scones and would
often be the one to wake him up
at night and start the car if the
siren went off.
Said Frost: “She’s been
amazing, she’s supported me
throughout my whole time in
the brigade. If it wasn’t for her, I
wouldn’t have made two-thirds
of the calls.”
He was looking forward to
spending more time with his
wife, playing “a bit of golf,” and
to travel around the country.
“I will miss it – it’s been a huge
part of my life.”
