CATHARINE<br />

& ANDREW<br />

PHOTOGRAPHY BY<br />

KATHRYN WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY<br />

Cathar<strong>in</strong>e met Andrew while the pair sh<strong>are</strong>d a house<br />

with n<strong>in</strong>e other young professionals <strong>in</strong> Moseley, a suburb<br />

of Birm<strong>in</strong>gham, Engl<strong>and</strong>. But it was not love at<br />

first sight.<br />

“Andrew was the last of the 10 people to move<br />

<strong>in</strong>,” sh<strong>are</strong>s Cathar<strong>in</strong>e. “By this time I was re<strong>all</strong>y bored<br />

of the process <strong>and</strong> fed up with hav<strong>in</strong>g to get to know<br />

new people. So I re<strong>all</strong>y didn’t try very hard <strong>and</strong> b<strong>are</strong>ly<br />

even spoke to him!” But after several nights out <strong>and</strong> a<br />

few house parties, they f<strong>in</strong><strong>all</strong>y connected. <strong>The</strong>y dated,<br />

try<strong>in</strong>g to unsuccessfully hide their romance from the<br />

housemates, before mov<strong>in</strong>g to London together.<br />

After five years, Cathar<strong>in</strong>e says she had pretty<br />

much given up on Andrew ever propos<strong>in</strong>g. “We traveled<br />

to some amaz<strong>in</strong>g places, with plenty of opportunity<br />

for <strong>in</strong>credible proposals,” she says, “So when we<br />

took a tot<strong>all</strong>y normal trip back to Irel<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> October<br />

2018 to visit his p<strong>are</strong>nts, I thought noth<strong>in</strong>g of it.” Andrew<br />

took her to his favorite place, K<strong>in</strong>nagoe Bay, <strong>and</strong><br />

popped the question with an engagement r<strong>in</strong>g he<br />

designed himself.<br />

<strong>The</strong> couple decided to get married <strong>in</strong> Cathar<strong>in</strong>e’s<br />

<strong>California</strong> hometown over the com<strong>in</strong>g Easter holiday.<br />

With less than six months to plan, they orig<strong>in</strong><strong>all</strong>y<br />

agreed on a more <strong>in</strong>timate wedd<strong>in</strong>g. “We realized<br />

how many people wanted to celebrate our union with<br />

us,” says Cathar<strong>in</strong>e. “Our guest list swelled to 60 <strong>and</strong><br />

caused a British <strong>and</strong> Irish <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>in</strong>to the sm<strong>all</strong> town<br />

of Nevada City.”<br />

With so many out-of-town guests, they <strong>in</strong>vited everyone<br />

to a w<strong>in</strong>e reception at the Nevada City W<strong>in</strong>ery<br />

to help break the ice. “It took away the stress of our<br />

p<strong>are</strong>nts <strong>and</strong> friends meet<strong>in</strong>g each other for the first<br />

time <strong>and</strong> the next day at the wedd<strong>in</strong>g everyone was<br />

already old friends,” sh<strong>are</strong>s the bride.<br />

A warm spr<strong>in</strong>g day greeted the couple at <strong>The</strong> Stone<br />

House on their wedd<strong>in</strong>g day. <strong>The</strong> late afternoon ceremony<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded passages from John Muir, an Irish<br />

bless<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> a s<strong>and</strong> ceremony. “Andrew collected s<strong>and</strong><br />

from K<strong>in</strong>nagoe Bay, <strong>and</strong> I collected s<strong>and</strong> from Santa<br />

Cruz w<strong>here</strong> I went to university,” expla<strong>in</strong>s Cathar<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

“We poured our <strong>in</strong>dividual vessels of s<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>to a new<br />

bottle engraved with ‘better together.’” As a wedd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

gift, Cathar<strong>in</strong>e gave Andrew an oil pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g of K<strong>in</strong>nagoe<br />

Bay by local Irish artist Tanya McColgan.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ceremony was followed by a big family-style<br />

d<strong>in</strong>ner, full of touch<strong>in</strong>g speeches, laughter <strong>and</strong> danc<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

One such touch<strong>in</strong>g speech came from the bride’s father,<br />

“My dad gave a lovely speech, which was planned.<br />

He talked, with humor, about what it was like go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through <strong>all</strong> the stages of rais<strong>in</strong>g me. He ended with a<br />

great l<strong>in</strong>e, ‘As far as I can tell, Andrew <strong>and</strong> I have three<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> common: Dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, Gambl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> Redheads.’<br />

And the whole place was cry<strong>in</strong>g with laugher. But<br />

what wasn’t planned <strong>and</strong> ended up be<strong>in</strong>g a beautiful<br />

surprise was when Andrew’s dad also gave a speech!<br />

It was re<strong>all</strong>y special hear<strong>in</strong>g his perspective on when<br />

Andrew <strong>and</strong> I started to get together <strong>and</strong> how they<br />

knew, before Andrew did, that I was the one for him.”<br />

<strong>The</strong> groom reflects back on the even<strong>in</strong>g, “<strong>The</strong> most<br />

fun was the celebrations <strong>in</strong>to the night. That memory is<br />

less clear though, which might have someth<strong>in</strong>g to do<br />

with those <strong>California</strong> IPAs.” OO —Darren Elms<br />
