Vicki <strong>and</strong> Darrell were engaged for 11 years before<br />

marry<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> couple, who met 14 years ago, decided<br />

it was f<strong>in</strong><strong>all</strong>y time for I Do’s after the bride retired from<br />

her job as an elementary school teacher. Vicki says busy<br />

lives <strong>and</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g families had kept them from gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

married sooner <strong>and</strong> expla<strong>in</strong>s, “Our engagement was<br />

<strong>in</strong>iti<strong>all</strong>y more of a commitment. Our long engagement<br />

is proof of our commitment to family <strong>and</strong> faith <strong>in</strong> our<br />

relationship. By the time we said, ‘I do’ we sh<strong>are</strong>d a deep<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>separable love.”<br />

<strong>The</strong>y planned a f<strong>all</strong> v<strong>in</strong>eyard-themed wedd<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

their 50 guests at McConnell Estates W<strong>in</strong>ery. <strong>The</strong> bride<br />

says, “It’s a beautiful venue <strong>and</strong> provided just the right<br />

atmosp<strong>here</strong> for our v<strong>in</strong>eyard wedd<strong>in</strong>g.” Dur<strong>in</strong>g plann<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

the couple enjoyed their w<strong>in</strong>e tast<strong>in</strong>g, “<strong>The</strong>ir w<strong>in</strong>es<br />

<strong>are</strong> top-notch <strong>and</strong> it was fun to go for our w<strong>in</strong>e tast<strong>in</strong>g.”<br />

When the big day f<strong>in</strong><strong>all</strong>y arrived, the bride’s sons<br />

walked her down the aisle <strong>and</strong> presented her to Darrell<br />

to be married. “Our vision was for an <strong>in</strong>timate,<br />

v<strong>in</strong>eyard wedd<strong>in</strong>g with an elegant yet casual vibe that<br />

highlighted the natural beauty of the venue,” she says.<br />

<strong>The</strong> daytime event was shaded by a majestic oak tree.<br />

Guests found additional shade under parasols provided<br />

by the couple’s event planner. <strong>The</strong> couple wanted their<br />

guests to feel relaxed, appreciated <strong>and</strong> comfortable so<br />

they encouraged everyone to skip the fancy attire <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>stead wear casual, summer clothes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ceremony was exactly what the couple envisioned.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir plann<strong>in</strong>g goal was to communicate<br />

<strong>and</strong> express love for each other, God <strong>and</strong> nature. “Our<br />

wedd<strong>in</strong>g def<strong>in</strong>itely reflected this, as we had our m<strong>in</strong>ister<br />

<strong>and</strong> readers sh<strong>are</strong> scripture <strong>and</strong> we made up our own<br />

vows,” says Vicki.<br />

<strong>The</strong> day was filled with love, friends <strong>and</strong> family.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y hung a “Family Tree” sign on the big oak along<br />

with wedd<strong>in</strong>g photos of their respective p<strong>are</strong>nts <strong>and</strong><br />

other family members. Both the bride’s <strong>and</strong> groom’s<br />

p<strong>are</strong>nts have passed <strong>and</strong> the family tree, “made us feel<br />

like they were t<strong>here</strong> <strong>in</strong> spirit,” says Vicki.<br />

At the end of the ceremony, the newlyweds jumped<br />

the broom to honor their African American ancestors.<br />

<strong>The</strong> groom’s family is from New Orleans so the couple<br />

had a “Second L<strong>in</strong>e” dur<strong>in</strong>g the reception w<strong>here</strong> guests<br />

followed the couple wav<strong>in</strong>g white h<strong>and</strong>kerchiefs while<br />

a Zydeco song played. <strong>The</strong> second l<strong>in</strong>e symbolizes the<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of a new life together. “It was re<strong>all</strong>y fun for<br />

<strong>all</strong>,” says Vicki.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g their reception Vicki <strong>and</strong> Darrell skipped the<br />

garter toss <strong>and</strong> bouquet toss, <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g their<br />

guests <strong>in</strong> a Soul Tra<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e. <strong>The</strong> celebration featured lots<br />

of music <strong>and</strong> danc<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g their most memorable<br />

wedd<strong>in</strong>g moment of their first dance to “Here <strong>and</strong><br />

Now” by Luther V<strong>and</strong>ross.<br />

Reflect<strong>in</strong>g back on their big day, Vicki <strong>and</strong> Darrell<br />

<strong>are</strong> grateful for each other <strong>and</strong> their time together. “This<br />

was a second (<strong>and</strong> last!) marriage for both bride <strong>and</strong><br />

groom,” she says. “We broke with several traditions to<br />

tailor it specific<strong>all</strong>y for us.” OO —Kristen Castillo<br />
