Owners worried about
future of Airbnb in city

owners are concerned about
the future of home-share
accommodation as the city
council mulls changes to its
rules for short-term
accommodation.
Proposed changes to the City
Plan would allow whole unit listings
in some areas but not others,
and would not allow listings in
multi-unit dwellings or on rear
sections.
Another option on the table
enables listings up to a specified
number of days, such as 60, 90 or
120 days per year.
City council head of planning

Griffiths confirmed a council
committee would ultimately
decide what to do with the
proposals next month.

Woolston, said there were fears
a change would “put big hotel
profits ahead of what’s best for

Award honours nurse’s achievements
CASSIE SCAIFE had a wide
smile as she absorbed the news
that she’d been named Ryman
Healthcare’s nurse of the year.
It was no small achievement
– Christchurch’s Ryman Healthcare
is New Zealand’s largest
retirement village operator and
employs 620 nurses at 36 villages
in NZ and in Australia.
Anthony Wilding Retirement
Village has been a big part of life
for the Halswell registered nurse.
She first started at the village
as a 17-year-old school student,
working in the laundry and then
the kitchen teams when it first
opened in 2007.
Scaife first trained as a
paramedic in Wellington after
leaving school, filling in her time
with shifts as a caregiver at Rita
Angus Retirement Village while
she was studying.
It was while working as an ambulance
officer that she attended
an emergency and realised that
her destiny lay in working as an
aged-care nurse.
“We went on a callout to look
after an older woman who was in
trouble. It was when I was caring
for her that I realised that looking
after older people was what I
really wanted to do,” said Scaife.
“I think my workmates were
surprised, but that’s what I

She returned to Christchurch
to begin a three-year nursing
course at CPIT and later returned
to where it all started at
Anthony Wilding to work as a
registered nurse on the afternoon

No one was more delighted
with her win than her mother
and sister, who were on hand
for her awards night celebration
along with daughters Phoebe, 5,
and Hazel, 3.
“It’s an amazing place and
team to work with,’’ said Scaife.
“You never hear them complain
no matter what is going on.
They just get on and put in the
effort to care for everyone and to
do their best for them.’’
She was also grateful for
Jeannie Sales, Anthony
Wilding’s clinical manager,
and Sharon Armstrong, village
manager, for their backing over
the years.
Said Scaife: “Jeannie has been
a great mentor. She’s always there
and makes time for those long
conversations you need about the
lessons you’re learning and the
problems that come up.
“She told me early on to
listen carefully and to ask the
right questions to guide conversations,
particularly with
families.
“It’s been great advice and
something I try to pass on.
“Sharon’s always efficient and
supportive, no matter what the
problem is.’’
Scaife was brought up in
Leeston and a lot of residents
are retired farmers from the
district.
“I’ve grown up knowing them
and their families so there’s a
real community feel to what we
do,” she said.
“Talking to them, seeing
that they are happy and
knowing their quirks is all part
of the job.’’

may no longer have to put up
with the frustrations of a flat
tyre.
Cashmere cousins Josh
Baker and Zak Shearer, both
year 11, recently launched Flatless
Tyres, a company that uses
a foam product that sits inside
tyres to stop sharp objects
puncturing the rubber and
damaging rims.
The foam acts as a spacer
between the tube and the tyre
and requires no maintenance
once it is installed.
The project began when
Josh was spending his weekends
mountain biking at the
Christchurch Adventure Park.
But as he started doing bigger
jumps and rougher trails,
his tyres would puncture every
two days, which was a frustrating
and an expensive process
to regularly replace them.
“I’ve been riding pretty hard,
but I kept getting a lot of flats,”
he said.
“After trying other options,
like going tubeless, I got together
with Zak and we started
designing and figuring out a
better way.”
The 15-year-olds are homeschooled
together and make
the products themselves.
Said Josh: “We tested many
types of foam as we tried to
find the perfect type for the
flatless tyre.
“This was fun, we smashed
foam, struck it with hammers,
stretched it and smacked it
until it gave in.
“We only chose the best foam
that didn’t yield to our abuse.”
The pair won $500 from the
University of Waikato’s Seed
Fund programme for young
enterprise start-ups which
helped to start the project.
The venture was part of the
Young Enterprise Scheme
where high school students
nationwide got a taste of what
it was like to run their own
business.
Josh said replacement tyres
would usually cost anywhere
between $15 to $25 each which
added up and could rise over
time to costing as much as
$2000.
Because of this, they believed
the innovation would be
a game-changer in the cycling
world by reducing costs and
waste associated with tyre
maintenance.

when test riders said it had
improved stability on tracks,
did not puncture, sustain any
damage and weighed the same
as standard tyres.
“We haven’t had too many
orders yet as it’s early days, but
we’ve had a lot of people ask
about it,” said Josh.
“We haven’t seen any products
like this in New Zealand,
so it feels pretty good that
we’re on to something.
“We’re aiming to be at the
top of the market and plan to
continue our business next
year.”

code of conduct for owners,

August 2018 and 2019.
It is estimated about 250,000
guests were hosted last year.
Griffiths said some regulations
could be approached
from a nationwide perspective.
“A nationwide code of
practice would be possible for
short-term accommodation,
but would require agreement
of all listing platform providers,
council and other regulatory
agencies,” he said.
“However, a nationwide
code of practice could not be
the only regulatory mechanism
in spite of this being a

A new era for long-established Opawa retirement village
