The Star Thursday August 20 2020 20 LETTERS Gerry Brownlee’s comment Very rarely do I feel sufficiently strongly about an issue to put fingers to keyboard. This is an exception. Gerry, as a senior politician and deputy leader of the Opposition, you should hang your head in shame. Following the Prime Minister’s announcement about community outbreak of Covid-19, you stood on the platform, insinuating that the information had been known for some time before making it public. To see you then exchange smirks with your leader, made you look like a 10-yearold seeking approval from the teacher. This cheap political shot, in my eyes, bought you down to Trump’s level. You have not done yourself or the National Party any favours. I was absolutely disgusted. Gerry, it seems to me that you are an old, tired, cynical politician. You have certainly lost my vote. Time to retire? – Libby Durey, Bishopdale Lockdown conspiracists While I strongly oppose the defacing of any city site – your article in The Star on August 13 reflects the most frightening aspect of group thinking. You are implying that any person who opposes a lockdown is a conspiracist. I remember quite clearly that the last lockdown was extended to make sure we “lock up” the gains to prevent a future lockdown. But after three months we are exactly at the same situation – even after extremely strict border controls. You are implying that even though the last lockdown failed, anyone who opposes a new lockdown is a conspiracist? As Albert Einstein said: “The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again while expecting a different results.” So who is the insane person now? The coming week in our history August 20, 1940 – The New Zealand Shipping Company freighter Turakina, en route to New Zealand from Britain via Australia, was sunk by the German raider Orion nearly 500km off the Taranaki coast after a brief gun battle – the first ever fought in the Tasman Sea. Thirtysix members of the Turakina’s crew were killed. Twenty-one survivors were rescued from the sea and taken prisoner; one soon died from his wounds. The Turakina was a British vessel with a mostly British crew. One of the victims, 34-year-old greaser John Moloney, was born in Invercargill, but no other New Zealand crew have been identified. August 21, 1958 – Auckland became the first New Zealand city to introduce the ‘Barnes Dance’ system, which stopped all traffic at intersections, allowing pedestrians to cross in any direction at the same time. Named after a US traffic engineer, Henry Barnes, the system was first used in North America in the 1940s. Other New Zealand cities soon followed and introduced the system. August 22, 1969 – The first Young Farmer of the Year was chosen at the South Pacific Hotel in Auckland, the competition was open to all members of the Young Farmers’ Club. The inaugural winner was Gary Frazer from Swannanoa. The contest has become an established part of the farming calendar. August 23, 1920 – Fifteen-year-old Violet Walrond entered the chilly waters of an outdoor swimming pool, adjoining a canal in Antwerp, to became New Zealand’s first female Olympian. Walrond was competing in a heat of the women’s 100m freestyle. She came second in her heat behind the powerful American, Ethelda Bleibtrey. Two days later, she placed fifth in the final. August 24, 1878 – The governor, the Marquess of Normanby, formally opened the Wellington steam-tram service, which was said to be the first in the southern hemisphere. The Wellington Tramway Company had begun operating three days earlier. The trams were not universally appreciated and criticised for being noisy, dirty, frightening horses, and prone to derailing. August 25, 1920 – Captain Euan Dickson completed the first air crossing of Cook Strait, flying a Le Rhone Avro from Christchurch to Upper Hutt with the first air mail between the South and North Islands. Dickson was flying for Henry Wigram’s Canterbury Aviation Company. The plane left Sockburn aerodrome at 7am flying into a strong headwind which depleted its fuel. He was forced to make an unscheduled landing in a paddock on the Kahutara River flats, just south of Kaikōura, where he managed to secure ‘motor spirit’ and a cup of tea. August 26, 1911 – King George V signed the Royal Warrant assigning the first New Zealand Coat of Arms. From 1840 until 1911 New Zealand used the British Royal Arms.
