Anger over Hitler
political
signage
• By Matt Slaughter
NEW Conservative has
distanced itself from a
party supporter who
put up a sign showing
Adolf Hitler alongside
Jacinda Ardern and
Minister of Health
Chris Hipkins.
Costa Harris took
down the sign on a property
he owns in Birdwood Ave,
Beckenham, on Tuesday, after
being questioned by The Star.
It has now been replaced with
another sign with no image that
reads: “NEWS, PM delivers on
slogans.”
Harris also has a New
Conservative political
sign (below) on his
fence.
The Hitler sign had
angered his tenants and
neighbours.
Costa Harris Harris said he put up
the sign because: “One,
it’s amusing, two it presents a
perspective that a lot of people
are waking up to, and three,
I see there are a lot of people
trying to really shut down any
dissenting views.”
Former TV presenter guilty of Trade
• By Kurt Bayer
A FORMER Australian TV
presenter has been found guilty
of inventing a “cruel lie” around
a dying child to con Trade Me
buyers out of $35,000.
Simone Anne Wright,
who also used the last names
Williams and Smith, will be
sentenced in the Christchurch
District Court tomorrow.
She was found guilty in the
district court yesterday on all
seven charges of obtaining by
deception after a judge-alone
trial. She was remanded in
custody.
She had denied making up
stories of a terminally ill son
being cared for at Auckland’s
Starship Hospital to sell motorcycles,
a spa bath and other
items worth thousands of dollars
on Trade Me.
The court heard how advertisements
surfaced on Trade
Me back in 2008 for a Kawasaki
motor-cycle which read: “Our
son has cancer and can no
longer ride his pride and joy.”
The Crown alleged the sick
child was fictitious and made up
to “engender trust and sympathy.”
Wright said she had nothing
FAKE TRADES: Simone Wright and ex-husband Paul Bennett.
to do with the fake trades – and
blamed former husband Paul
James Bennett who last month
was jailed for more than three
years after admitting a series of
frauds worth $580,000.
She claimed he controlled
everything.
In finding her guilty, Judge
Paul Kellar said it “strains credibility
to breaking point” that
Wright did not know what was
going on.
In her evidence on Monday,
Wright told how Bennett – who
she married in Sydney in 2002
– used to tell “spectacular”
stories, claiming he’d once
been kidnapped at gunpoint in
Hollywood star Russell Crowe’s
helicopter by an Australian
criminal organisation.
One “big story” was how he
had lived in South Africa and
worked for the CIA as a helicopter
pilot and that he’d been “a
witness to all sorts of things.”
“He even bought a nuclear
weapon into the story,” she said,
along with former British Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher’s
son Sir Mark.
When they met, Bennett allegedly
told her to sell her house
and car, and that she didn’t need
to work anymore.
“Eventually, everything was
gone. Right down to a small
suitcase of clothes,” she said.
“I lost everything… he lied to
me our whole relationship. He’s
an expert liar.”
They snuck into New Zealand
in 2005, sailing across the Tasman
Sea from Australia on a
yacht and avoiding immigration
officials.
Wright claimed they did so
because Bennett “feared for his
life” and was running from the
organised crime syndicate.
The court heard that in May
2008 they were living in Napier
when Wright set up two Trade
Me accounts and two bank accounts.
On May 27, 2008, a used
plug-in spa was listed for sale
with its listing saying it was
needed to “help pay family
medical bills.”
A Dunedin woman won the
auction and paid $4065 for the
spa.
In an exchange of emails
around getting the spa delivered,
the seller said they were at
Starship Hospital with a son on
life support. The buyer offered
her best wishes but the spa was
never received – and she never
heard from the seller again.
Another exchange involved a
silage wagon and Suzuki quad
bike selling for $16,500. When
the items didn’t arrive, the
buyer phoned and spoke with a
male who said they were at Starship
with a nephew who had
brain cancer.
A Kawasaki motor-cycle was
sold three times, with stories
around a sick son.
One witnesses told how after
buying the bike for $2650 he
had a phone conversation with
a woman called “Susan” and
sympathised with her tale of a
sick son with a brain tumour.
“As a father with a son the
same age you get sucked along.
It was a good game,” the witness
said.
They soon had concerns of a
con and when they tried phoning
back, got no answer.
They never got their money
back.
Asked by defence counsel
Elizabeth Bulger if the “woman”
the witness spoke to on the
phone could’ve been a man
putting on a woman’s voice, he
laughed.
“Not a chance,” he said,
adding that the woman had a
slight accent and might’ve been
English.
Kellar ruled that to be a key
piece of evidence, finding the
witness to be credible, and concluding
it would’ve been “simply
implausible” for Bennett to
have put on a woman’s voice.
Both Wright and Bennett
were arrested as the pair sailed
into Sydney Harbour after
crossing the Tasman Sea from
Northland on a crippled yacht
in February 2015.
Infectious disease expert honoured
WITNESSING the devastating
effects of diseases such as measles
and the transformational benefits
of vaccines as a young doctor
working in Sir Edmund Hillary’s
remote Nepalese mountain
hospital, inspired David
Murdoch’s interest in infectious
diseases.
Decades on, the now professor
and world-renowned expert has
been awarded the University of
Otago’s highest distinction.
Professor David Murdoch is
this year’s recipient of the university’s
distinguished research
medal. It is awarded for outstanding
scholarly achievement,
including the discovery and
dissemination of new knowledge,
or development of concepts that
lead to significant advances in the
field.
The Christchurch-based
researcher is a recognised world
leader in the study, prevention
and treatment of infectious
diseases, particularly pneumonia
and other respiratory infections.
Among his notable
achievements are a leading role
in a Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation-funded global study
of childhood pneumonia that
changed the way the disease is
diagnosed, treated and prevented
in developing countries; and
years of research on legionnaires’
disease that culminated in the
establishment of a New Zealandwide
surveillance system.
He also co-director of the One
Health Aoteaora research alliance,
a diverse network of infectious
disease experts working to
address health hazards related
to animal and environmental
factors. He also works at the
Canterbury District Health Board
as a clinical microbiologist.
In recent months Murdoch has
advised the Government during
the Covid-19 pandemic and was
one of three international experts
invited to advise the Oxford University
team developing a vaccine
for Covid-19.
Murdoch said Covid-19 has
highlighted the global importance
of infectious disease risks and the
need for the whole world to work
as one to address major global
threats. It has also highlighted
the importance of research and
scientists’ role as translators.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has
shown us the importance of
science-informed policy and the
critical need for clear and trusted
communication.”
Murdoch said the pandemic
has also highlighted the need for
kindness, leadership and equity.
He said one of the highlights
of his career has been working
with many wonderful groups and
individuals.
“To be part of a large global
network of values-driven researchers,
including many New
Zealand colleagues, has been an
absolute highlight … these colleagues
are all friends, including
some of my closest, and I am a
strong believer in the importance
of friendship in successful
research endeavours.”
He said research leaders have
an important role to play in creating
environments where others
flourish; in building capability,
mentorship and diversity; and
addressing inequities.
University of Otago Vice Chancellor
Professor Harlene Hayne
says the award is richly deserved.
“Professor Murdoch is the
epitome of a leader. He works
tirelessly to progress the understanding
of infectious diseases
and because of his mana in the
field and gift for communication
and collaboration, he has
been able to ensure his research
findings are implemented and
make a difference to the health of
individuals and communities.
“One significant example of his
impact was the critical part he
played in the establishment of a
national vaccination programme
for all Nepalese children, which
happened because of his rigorous
research and ability to work with
governmental agencies and the
World Health Organisation.”
University of Otago deputy
vice-chancellor, research and enterprise,
Professor Richard Blaikie
says Murdoch stood out among
other highly deserving nominees
for the quality of his research
as well as the benefits it has for
people and communities globally.
“David clearly cares deeply
about translating research into
impact and is a shining example
for many researchers to follow.”
Why kiwis should make sure they
are on fibre broadband
PROMOTED CONTENT
New Zealanders are
spoilt for choice when it
comes to the broadband
technology available – thanks
to world-class fibre broadband
availability to 80 per cent of
households.
Despite fibre’s availability,
choosing the right broadband
can be a real headache
managing all the technologies,
deals and services from internet
providers. As well as fibre,
there’s other technologies
around like cellular-based
services sold as broadband
(called fixed wireless) and
some homes are still on old
copper broadband (called ADSL
and VDSL).
The differences between
these broadband technologies
turn up as speed, service
reliability and how much
performance drops when
lots of people are using their
broadband service the same
time – like during peak times
in the evening. Sometimes bad
weather can be a factor for
some technology.
These factors can have a
significant impact on the
internet experience you have
at home and can even stop you
doing the things you want to -
The right broadband technology may eliminate or reduce stop-start streaming and buffering, or
low-quality video when watching movies or video conferencing.
streaming movies, connecting
with family over video or
gaming. The right broadband
technology may eliminate or
reduce stop-start streaming and
buffering, or low-quality video
when watching movies or video
conferencing.
Why you should not let your
internet provider choose your
broadband
The simple answer is that
only you can make the best
decision for your family or
household and you have a right
to know what you are buying.
Most people would not let
someone else choose their new
TV or car. It might seem like
an odd comparison, but your
broadband is likely to cost you
up to $1000 per year, maybe
more, and you could be tied in
for two years. Broadband
is a big purchase.
Make sure you ask
your internet provider
exactly what technology
they are offering
you, what speed you
can expect from that
technology and to
explain how it will meet
your needs.
How to choose the right
broadband and compare
different technologies
The good news is the
Commerce Commission
publishes a quarterly
broadband comparison
report to help consumers
make informed decisions.
The latest report
highlights the differences
in performance in average
download speeds on
different technologies. On
a 100Mbps (megabits per
second - speed) fibre plan,
you get an average speed
of 99Mbps – so what you
would expect and pay for.
On a top end fibre plan
the average speed jumps
to over 708Mbps. Other
technologies are much
slower – ADSL (9Mbps),
fixed wireless (26Mbps) and
VDSL (43Mbps).
Speed is the key to good
broadband performance and
the report highlights this.
With fibre you can successfully
stream ultra-high definition
video nearly all the time (99
per cent). On VDSL this drops
by about 10 per cent, on fixed
wireless this will only work
two-thirds of the time and one
tenth of the time on ADSL.
The report also highlights
the difference in technology
performance during the
Covid-19 lockdown when so
many people were dependent
on the quality of their home
broadband – with 100Mbps
fibre service speeds unaffected
and fixed wireless speeds
reducing by 20 per cent to 25
per cent.
Broadbandcompare.co.nz
providers. You can see what
broadband technology is
New book: Was World War 2 hero
A new book about
legendary Canterbury
soldier Charles Upham
argues he could
have been awarded
the Victoria Cross a
staggering eight times
during World War 2.
Kurt Bayer reports
CAPTAIN CHARLES Hazlitt
Upham is the only combat
soldier to twice win the Victoria
Cross - the highest award for
gallantry - and one of only three
double VC winners ever.
He was awarded his first
VC for “a series of remarkable
exploits” over nine days during
the bloody Battle of Crete in
1941, where he single-handedly
snuffed out numerous machinegun
posts, carried wounded
men under fire, and was badly
wounded in his shoulder on the
fourth day.
Upham then won his bar, or
second VC, when he fearlessly
led his men in North Africa.
His citation recorded “five acts
of conspicuous gallantry” over
three weeks before he was severely
wounded again and captured
by the Germans.
As a prisoner of war (POW),
he made so many escape attempts
RATIONS: Charles Upham, taking time out for some lunch, with the New Zealand Division
that he was finally sent to the
infamous Colditz Castle.
But in Searching for Charlie,
a major new biography, awardwinning
cartoonist and columnist
Tom Scott suggests the relentless
acts of bravery by a wiry,
modest Canterbury farm valuer
meant he probably deserved six
more.
“In the end they couldn’t do
it – they couldn’t give one man
that many VCs. But just winning
one VC was a nightmare for
[Upham], winning two was just
horrifying, so if he won eight it
would’ve killed him,” said Scott
who quit his regular cartoon slot
to pursue the book project.
“Searching for the source
of Charlie’s courage was like
chasing the end of a rainbow.
The deeper I looked and
explored the more mysterious it
slightly-built farm valuer
could be so ferocious and
fearless in battle.
became, until it defied rational
explanation.”
Scott has been fascinated by
Upham since he was a schoolboy
and reading the best-selling
classic Mark of the Lion by
Hamilton lawyer Kenneth
Sandford, published in 1962.

Charles Upham short-changed?
During his research, he went on
a pilgrimage to Upham’s old battlegrounds
in Crete and Egypt, as
well as the POW camps at Colditz
and Weinsberg in Germany, and
Modena in Italy.
Scott visited the British Museum
and learned about other VC
winners, all the time thinking,
rather ashamedly, “Charlie did
this before morning tea”.
He also retraced Upham’s
childhood and discovered his
uncle and namesake, Dr Charles
Upham, who took his nephew on
house calls to the Quail Island
leper colony.
The seeds of Upham’s powerful
moral compass and his lifelong
abhorrence of bigotry, pretence
and prejudice were sewn in those
times, Scott believes.
Shy and reluctant to take any
credit, Upham deflected all
praise onto his soldiers and was
“distraught” to discover he’d won
the VC.
“Charlie was locked into a defiant,
bewildered, almost pathological
modesty,” Scott said.
“He didn’t downplay his
achievements so much as wish
vehemently that they would go
claims he was a psychopath.
Extract from Searching
for Charlie by Tom Scott:
From Chapter 11 – Perfect
pandemonium
Galatas is nothing like the
picture I had of it in my mind’s
eye. I ignored clues to the
contrary in every book I read
on Crete and imprinted in
my memory it was a cluster of
houses on a flat rural road.
I could never figure out why
Charlie’s platoon participated in
a bayonet charge to recapture it.
This changed when I saw a road
sign for Galatas and swung my
rental off the national highway
and headed inland to a hilltop
village. A one-way road coiled
like a snake charmer’s python
to the summit where a Greek
Orthodox church overlooked
a small square. To the east
farmhouses and hilltop mansions
stretched all the way to Chania.
To the south lay the White
Mountains, Cemetery Hill, Prison
Valley and Lake Agia reflecting
HISTORIC: Scott’s
Europe, including
rolling slopes laced with vineyards
and dotted with olive trees spread
all the way to Maleme airfield, an
air force base and the German
War Cemetery.
After four days of battle, the
Germans owned this coast,
lock, stock and smoking barrel.
To continue their advance into
Chania, the Germans had to first
get past Galatas. That’s why it
mattered. • Turn to page 10
In a state of ‘exhilarated defiance’
• From page 9
On the fifth day Charlie’s
company were sent forward to
protect the northern approaches
of the village against repeated
enemy assaults that got heavier
as the day wore on. Some New
Zealand units were forced
back. Charlie was determined
to hold their ridge. Leaving his
men lower down, he crawled to
the highest point to study the
approaching enemy. Satisfied the
terrain worked to their advantage,
he signalled his men to join him.
The crack 5th German Mountain
Division advanced confidently. Too
confidently.
Kippenberger: “At Galatas on
May 25 his platoon was heavily
engaged when troops in front
gave way and came under severe
mortar and MG fire. While his
platoon stopped under cover of a
ridge, 2/Lt Upham went forward,
observed the enemy and brought
the platoon forward when the
Germans advanced. They killed
over 40 with fire and grenades and
forced the remainder to fall back.”
Another wave of Germans
flowed around their dead, firing
in the general direction of Charlie’s
well-hidden boys. Sandford
describes Charlie as being in a
state of “exhilarated defiance”
at this point. He paraded up
and down just long enough to
pinpoint German machine-gun
fire, then directed his riflemen to
destroy it.
As Private Ken McKegney told
it: “Charlie was telling us to keep
down, all the time standing there
in the open himself, his arm in a
sling. Most of the boys thought
it was too hot for us to stay there
but they couldn’t do much about
it with Charlie wandering around
as if it didn’t matter, lead flying
everywhere. Charlie knew that
if we didn’t stick it out for a few
hours, the whole division might
have gone west.”
Sheer weight of numbers
prevailed in the end. Germans
getting in behind Allied lines
wreaked havoc. Under orders to
retire with his platoon, Charlie
TURNBULL LIBRARY
saw a pincer movement unfolding
behind him.
Kippenberger: “He went back to
warn other troops that they were
being cut off. When he came out
himself he was fired on by two
Germans.” • Turn to page 13
‘He took aim, waited . . . then CRACK!’
• From page 10
Charlie emerged out of an olive
grove on the run. Somewhere
behind him were two Germans
armed with machine guns.
Ahead of him was a hundred metres
of exposed ground sprinkled
with a few trees. He was halfway
across when the Germans appeared
out of the grove, guns
chattering. One of Charlie’s men
saw him jerk and twist as he fell
from view into long grass. He
was convinced Charlie had been
killed. So were the Germans, but
taking no chances, they crept
forward cautiously.
Kippenberger: “He fell and
shammed dead, then crawled
into a position and having the
use of only one arm he rested his
rifle in the fork of a tree as the
Germans came forward.”
Charlie had just tripped over
an exposed root. He squirmed
through the grass to a small tree
that stood between him and his
stalkers. The first branch was low.
Charlie used his right hand to lift
the heavy rifle into the fork. The
Jerries were close, looking for a
body. Charlie let them creep closer.
He took aim, waited until they
were just 2 metres away, then
squeezed the trigger — CRACK!
The first German toppled to the
ground. The second German
paused in disbelief over his fallen
comrade. It was time enough for
Charlie to shift his good hand to
the bolt, draw it back and bring
another round into the chamber.
Pushing it home, he squeezed the
trigger again — CRACK! Blood
spouting from the middle of his
forehead, the second German fell
face forward against the muzzle
of Charlie’s rifle.
Further up the slopes, Colonel
Kippenberger was charged with
holding Galatas against the
German breakthrough with
a makeshift force of drivers
without trucks, gunners without
artillery, the Kiwi Concert
Party, plus Cretan irregulars and
mainland Greek soldiers armed
with ancient rifles. Some of his
men broke and ran. Horrified
that it might become contagious,
the slightly built, undemonstrative
small-town lawyer stood
footsteps in Egypt, Crete, Italy and Germany.
in the middle of the maelstrom
shouting, “Stand for New Zealand!
Stand, every man who is a
soldier!” He sheepishly admitted
later that he couldn’t think of
anything else to say. It was hardly
“We few, we happy few, we band
of brothers!” like Henry V before
the battle of Agincourt, but it was
enough. It stopped a trickling
retreat from becoming a complete
gushing rout and made him a legend
in the New Zealand Division.
Kippenberger waited until
dusk before launching a counterattack.
With reinforcements
from the 28th Battalion, Charlie’s
platoon, and two British tanks,
they charged back into the village
with all guns blazing and
Maori war chants electrifying the
air. Unbidden, locals, including
mothers and grandmothers,
armed with knives, reap hooks,
pitchforks, hoes and axes joined
in, screaming like banshees.
Kippenberger: “There was a
tremendous amount of bayonet
work in Galatas. For 15 minutes
there was perfect pandemonium
in the village, an indescribable
uproar, screams, grenade bursts
and the deafening rattle of
rifles, Brens and Tommy guns.
The narrow cobbled street was
carpeted with the dead, nearly
all Germans. Every door and
window had been smashed in,
and dead Germans sprawled in
every room by the street, with
wounded on both sides walking,
crawling or propped against the
walls everywhere.’
Chased down streets, over walls
and across backyards, Germans
fled in terror. But everyone knew
that once they had gotten over
their shock and called for reinforcements
they would be back.
A large painting depicting a
scene of the fighting hangs on the
wall of the antechamber attached
to the church at Galatas. Holding
a rock aloft, a bearded Cretan
wearing a beret, sleeveless jerkin,
breeches and knee-high leather
boots stands over a cowering
German. Trapped in his harness,
as helpless as a bug on its back,
the paratrooper is about to get his
head stoved in.
Beneath this violent image,
sweet old ladies in black shawls
eyed me suspiciously when I
entered asking for directions to
Stelios Tripalitakis’ war museum.
Recognising my accent, an old
man beamed and ushered me
back into the square where I
rang Stelios again. “Stay put!” he
yelled. “STAY PUT!” “Sniper!”
yelled the old man when I got off
the phone, pointing with boyish
glee to the church tower above
us. For just a moment I caught
glimpses of the gleeful boy who
MONUMENT: The Charles Upham statue stands tall in
PHOTO: WIKIMEDIA
witnessed the battle. He told me
how his mother baked bread for
Kiwi soldiers and he delivered it
to their barricades.
A belching car lurched up and
Stelios leapt out. He had his book
with him that featured a large
collection of black-and- white
photographs taken during the
invasion. Included were shots of
charred, rubble-strewn Galatas
streets alongside shots of the
same streets today, leafy and
quiet. Stelios walked me to the
spot where a dead Maori soldier
lay in one of the photos. Despite
the captions being in Greek, I
purchased two copies. It was the
least I could do.
Stelios spends every spare
moment scouring lofts, combing
old battlefields with metal
detectors and diving coastal
waters searching for military
relics and, with a bit of luck, the
Crown Jewels of Greece. His
bigger relics, rusting engine
cowlings, chassis, motorbikes and
the like, have taken over his lawn,
garage and basement. Upstairs
the living room is filled floor
to ceiling with badges, buckles,
helmets, guns and dressmakers’
dummies clothed in German
and British uniforms. He knows
his swelling collection tests his
family’s patience, but with a
passion bordering on fever he
wants young Cretans and young
New Zealanders to never forget
what happened here. You get the
impression that if his wife were
ever to say, “Stelios, either this
s*** goes, or I do!” he would call
her a cab. – NZ Herald
The lockdown had worked,
New Zealand was free of
But there is an ominous
cloud now building for the
the Covid outbreak in
Interviews on Newstalk ZB
No one in Government seems
different people have different
Jacinda Ardern
“I can’t answer that – that’s
That was a good move from
closing the cracks when they
appear.
But Covid isn’t a fire. It’s
a virus, unseen and undetectable
until people get
infected and have passed on the
infection.
We all have our part of play
as we did during lockdown.
But the Government needs to
step up a notch or two otherwise
it could pay the price on election
day.
PUBLIC NOTICE
Canterbury on-sold
property repair package
Any Canterbury property owner who believes they may be eligible for the ex-gratia on-sold building
repair payment has less than two months left to lodge an application. The deadline has been extended
to 14 October 2020 to recognise the disruption caused by COVID-19.
The on-sold package allows eligible Canterbury property owners to apply for an ex-gratia payment
to repair missed damage and/or failed EQC commissioned building work arising from the Canterbury
earthquake sequence. It is available for a limited time only.
On-sold building repair ex-gratia payments
You may be eligible if the offer you made to purchase your current
home was made after the Canterbury earthquakes (from 4
September 2010) but on or before 15 August 2019 and the previous
owner lodged a claim with EQC.
You will need to be able to show that:
a) you meet the eligibility criteria; and
b) there is missed earthquake damage or failed EQC repairs
that exceed the EQC insurance cap*.
Assessing the risk of damage
Because missed earthquake damage may exist and can be difficult
to identify, on-sold property owners are encouraged to seek
professional advice to determine whether they should apply. EQC’s
claims information on each property may be publicly available, but
on-sold property owners are warned this information may not be a
comprehensive assessment of the building and should not be relied on
without independent verification. Always seek independent advice.
The application process
If you believe that you may be eligible, you have until 14 October
2020 to lodge an application describing the damage that you are
claiming for.
Applicants will need to provide documents as soon as possible,
including:
• A copy of your signed sale and purchase agreement
• A deed of assignment for the original EQC claim (where
applicable)
• A description of the damage or building issue that you would
like to claim for
• Any correspondence, or other document, where applicable,
that sets out the final conditions of any sale and purchase and
if those conditions have been met.
Once your eligibility is established, and depending on the complexity
of the repairs, you will have a further five months to provide any
building, engineering and/or geotechnical reports requested by EQC
in order to establish the earthquake damage and options for repair.
The repair process
Ex-gratia home repair payments are not an insurance pay-out made
under the EQC Act. The application, assessment, and settlement
procedures may differ from those commonly used by private
insurers.
• Property owners are required to spend the ex-gratia payment
to complete the repairs
• Payments on approved applications may be made in tranches
• Documentation, including a signed building contract, council
consent, and/or receipts may be required before payment can
be made.
Applications close 14 October 2020
The final date to apply is 14 October 2020. EQC is not able to accept
applications after this date.
How to apply
If you have considered your options and decided to apply, you can
submit an application online at www.eqc.govt.nz/on-solds
You can also contact us by phone on 0800 DAMAGE (326 243)
or email info@eqc.govt.nz
Applications cannot be lodged after 14 October 2020 and stalled or
inactive applications may be closed after two months. If you have
difficulties obtaining the required documentation to establish eligibility, you
should discuss this with EQC as soon as practicable.
Find out more and apply at www.eqc.govt.nz/on-solds
Phone us on 0800 DAMAGE (326 243) or email info@eqc.govt.nz
*The EQC cap for damage is as at the time of the Canterbury earthquakes: $100,000 (+GST)

OPINION
Former
Christchurch
Airport chief
executive
and current
Queenstown
Lakes mayor Jim Boult
says plans for a new
airport at Tarras, Central
Otago, just don’t stack
up
LIKE MANY others, I
was surprised to learn of
Christchurch International
Airport’s (CIAL) recentlyannounced
proposal to develop
a wide body-capable airport
at Tarras. This has obviously
created a large amount of
discussion around the district.
Here are my views on the matter.
Firstly, let us consider the
suitability of Tarras for a wide
body-capable airport. Since the
Clyde Dam was built and Lake
Dunstan formed, Tarras has
suffered from widespread fog
throughout the winter period.
Depending on the year, this can
be reasonably consistent for one
to two months.
As an ex-airport CEO, there’s
one thing that I can tell you and
that is, fog and airports do not
make happy bed mates.
While all of the Central Otago
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Chances of Tarras airport happening are
and Queenstown Lakes District’s
areas are attractive places to visit,
the reality is that Queenstown is
by a very long shot, the most visited
area of this part of the world
and has the largest population.
I have some difficulty therefore
in understanding the rationale of
placing an airport more than an
hour’s drive from Queenstown
with access by either a challenging
mountain pass or the winding
Kawarau Gorge.
I have genuine concern about
international visitors arriving in
wide-body jets (as CIAL envisage
this development attracting)
tired and picking up a rental car
to head for Queenstown on a
treacherous winter night.
It’s unfortunate CIAL weren’t
able to get round to asking the
good folk of Tarras whether
they want a wide-body-capable
airport on their doorstep before
announcing the proposal to
build one.
When this proposal was mooted
some time ago, I had Tarras
folk asking me why we wanted to
send our airport traffic, and the
associated disruption, to their
part of the world. I was able to
tell them that it certainly wasn’t
my idea, I didn’t favour it then,
I don’t now, and I understand
NEEDED? The site of the
proposed airport at Tarras.
their position entirely.
Then, let’s take a look at the
morality of this. We have CIAL,
which is 75 per cent owned by
the ratepayers of Christchurch
and 25 per cent owned by the
New Zealand taxpayer, spending
their money on a highly
speculative venture in our part of
the country.
While I maintain the project
has very little chance of becoming
reality, the consideration that
an organisation with that parentage
should come into our region
with the intention of taking an
initiative which has the potential
to destroy a considerable part of
the value of the assets owned
by our ratepayers, is frankly
appalling.
An editorial in the Otago Daily
Times on July 25 extols all parties
involved to get together and
in effect, divvy up the visitors
around our existing airports.
‘slim and none’
My apologies to the ODT,
but you simply don’t know
what you’re talking about.
We don’t direct tourists
where to go. They make the
choice. The fact that this
part of the world is very attractive
to visitors is enormously
beneficial to New
Zealand as a whole and we
should celebrate that. I’ve
said it before and I’ll say it
again, that Invercargill Airport
has a part in the future
play around this matter but
that is for the future.
Again, the harsh reality
facing us at present is that
it will take a long time
for air travel to recover to
anything like what it was
before Covid-19 which is
very much a reality for the
rest of the world.
That reality, together
with the advances in modern
aircraft technology,
leave me with the view that
it will be along time before
Queenstown Airport faces
any capacity issues at all.
And, again the reality is
that apart from the currently
proposed small commuter
flights, no action will
take place on developing
commercial flights at Wanaka
Airport for a similarly
long time.
In summary, a lot of
people have got themselves
terribly excited about
this proposal.
I very much doubt that
it will ever see the light of
mine often says, the chances
of this happening are
slim and none, and right
now slim is out of town.
full-body health
screening
At Marvel Health, your healthcare
starts with a full-body health
screening. The health screening examines
all organs in the body and detects the
likely diseases present and the causes of
those diseases.
Our understanding of healthcare is that
we need to discover the causes of an
illness before it can be adequately treated.
And because the human body is one
whole system and not compartmentalised
into separate areas, we understand that
a symptom presenting in an area of the
body may not necessarily arise from that
area. For example, a complaint of chest
pain may not originate from the heart.
The pain could be from a lung infection
or acid reflux caused by a hyper acidic
stomach. It could also be from chest
muscle pain. The best way to detect the
actual cause is from a comprehensive
Thursday August 20 2020 The Star
diagnostic scan of the entire body.
The Marvel Health scan reads and interprets
biomagnetic signals from human cells to
reveal the ongoing problems occurring
and possible future complications. With
this information, doctors can now plan
a targeted regenerative and preventive
healthcare program.
Our protocol is to recommend the
essential compounds that target the most
dysfunctional 3 systems of the body. The
Scan organises the human body into
9 systems, and the 3 weakest systems
identified are strong pointers to the
regions of the body that require support.
And the support from Marvel will be in
the form of recommended supplements
from our doctor and personalised
lifestyle recommendations from our
Gerry Brownlee’s
comment
Very rarely do I feel sufficiently strongly
about an issue to put fingers to keyboard.
This is an exception.
Gerry, as a senior politician and deputy
leader of the Opposition, you should hang
your head in shame.
Following the Prime Minister’s announcement
about community outbreak
of Covid-19, you stood on the platform,
insinuating that the information had been
known for some time before making it
public.
To see you then exchange smirks with
your leader, made you look like a 10-yearold
seeking approval from the teacher. This
cheap political shot, in my eyes, bought you
down to Trump’s level. You have not done
yourself or the National Party any favours.
I was absolutely disgusted. Gerry, it
seems to me that you are an old, tired,
cynical politician. You have certainly lost
my vote. Time to retire? – Libby Durey,
Lockdown
conspiracists
While I strongly oppose the defacing of
any city site – your article in The Star on
August 13 reflects the most frightening
aspect of group thinking.
You are implying that any person who
opposes a lockdown is a conspiracist.
I remember quite clearly that the last
lockdown was extended to make sure we
“lock up” the gains to prevent a future
lockdown.
But after three months we are exactly at
the same situation – even after extremely
strict border controls. You are implying
that even though the last lockdown failed,
anyone who opposes a new lockdown is a
conspiracist?
As Albert Einstein said: “The definition
of insanity is doing the same things over
and over again while expecting a different
results.”
So who is the insane person now?
I would like to say that I strongly oppose
any kind vandalism. – Lucy Hay
The coming week in our history
August 20, 1940 – The New Zealand
Shipping Company freighter Turakina,
en route to New Zealand from Britain via
Australia, was sunk by the German raider
Orion nearly 500km off the Taranaki
coast after a brief gun battle – the first
ever fought in the Tasman Sea. Thirtysix
members of the Turakina’s crew were
killed. Twenty-one survivors were rescued
from the sea and taken prisoner; one soon
died from his wounds. The Turakina was
a British vessel with a mostly British crew.
One of the victims, 34-year-old greaser
John Moloney, was born in Invercargill,
but no other New Zealand crew have been
identified.
August 21, 1958 – Auckland became
the first New Zealand city to introduce
the ‘Barnes Dance’ system, which stopped
all traffic at intersections, allowing
pedestrians to cross in any direction at
the same time. Named after a US traffic
engineer, Henry Barnes, the system was
first used in North America in the 1940s.
Other New Zealand cities soon followed
and introduced the system.
August 22, 1969 – The first Young
Farmer of the Year was chosen at the South
Pacific Hotel in Auckland, the competition
was open to all members of the Young
Farmers’ Club. The inaugural winner was
Gary Frazer from Swannanoa. The contest
has become an established part of the
farming calendar.
August 23, 1920 – Fifteen-year-old
Violet Walrond entered the chilly waters
of an outdoor swimming pool, adjoining
a canal in Antwerp, to became New
Zealand’s first female Olympian. Walrond
was competing in a heat of the women’s
100m freestyle. She came second in her
heat behind the powerful American,
Ethelda Bleibtrey. Two days later, she
placed fifth in the final.
August 24, 1878 – The governor, the
Marquess of Normanby, formally opened
the Wellington steam-tram service, which
was said to be the first in the southern
hemisphere. The Wellington Tramway
Company had begun operating three days
earlier. The trams were not universally
appreciated and criticised for being noisy,
dirty, frightening horses, and prone to
derailing.
August 25, 1920 – Captain Euan
Dickson completed the first air crossing
of Cook Strait, flying a Le Rhone Avro
from Christchurch to Upper Hutt with
the first air mail
between the
South and North
Islands. Dickson
was flying for
Henry Wigram’s
Canterbury
Aviation
Company.
The plane
left Sockburn
aerodrome at
7am flying into a
strong headwind
which depleted its fuel. He was forced
to make an unscheduled landing in a
paddock on the Kahutara River flats, just
south of Kaikōura, where he managed to
secure ‘motor spirit’ and a cup of tea.
August 26, 1911 – King George V signed
the Royal Warrant assigning the first New
Zealand Coat of Arms. From 1840 until
1911 New Zealand used the British Royal
Arms.

It’s a year since Environment Canterbury
declared a climate-change emergency
JENNY HUGHEY explains what
the council has been doing.
The formal declaration of a
state of climate emergency across
Canterbury was one of the most
serious, and colourful, moments
in the regional council’s more than
30-year history.
A year ago this Saturday,
at 11.49am, Environment
Canterbury became New Zealand’s
first council to proclaim such an
emergency, formally dedicating
itself to consideration of climate
change at the heart of all it does.
The declaration highlighted
that all the work Environment
Canterbury does – from
freshwater management to
biodiversity and biosecurity,
transport and urban development
to air quality, and also regional
leadership – has a climate change
focus.
Currently, under the Resource
Management Act, regional
councils are required only to adapt
to climate change, not mitigate
it – that responsibility is the
Government’s, but could change.
Even in ‘adapt mode’ many
of Environment Canterbury’s
and enhance that work.
That work included setting
up a climate-change integration
programme in the Long-term Plan
2018-28, ensuring climate change
was actively considered across
workstreams, increasing visibility
of the science and what we know
about the impact of climate
change on Canterbury, and liaising
on the issue with iwi and regional
partners, other local authorities
and central government.
As an organisation, we have
also made significant progress in
addressing our own greenhousegas
emissions, with our
Christchurch building receiving a
“market-leading” energy efficiency
rating of 5.0 out of 6 in the year
FAVOURITE PLACES: MOANA 25
No stress, just you and nature
As we are
making great
strides to
see more
of our own
backyards,
we asked
people from
around the south to tell
us about their favourite
places. Afterall, there
is nothing like getting
travel advice from a local.
Former Grey district
mayor Tony Kokshoorn
talks about his lakeside
bach in Moana, on the
West Coast
What I love most about
Moana:
Moana is a hidden gem. Tucked
away under the Southern Alps
among the lush West Coast
rainforests on the shores of the
West Coast’s largest lake, Brunner.
Everything is so fresh, an untamed
natural wilderness. No stress in
Moana, just you and nature.
What most people don’t
know about Moana:
Moana has the amenities that
modern living requires. Ultrafast
broadband, a four-star hotel
and restaurant with a takeaway
service, a camping ground serving
barista coffee, a lakefront
restaurant and boat charter is
available also. A service centre
includes a petrol station, a mechanical
workshop and a modern
general store that supplies everything
you need.
A great area to stay in is:
Everywhere. With 300 baches
and holiday homes on offer there is
plenty of accommodation for hire.
The best way to start the
day:
Gazing across the lake, with a
coffee in hand, at a mirror image
of the surrounding mountains.
Such a peaceful place. At the end
of your day, the renowned West
Coast sunsets are to die for.
For a great night out:
The centrally situated Moana
hotel (Hotel Lake Brunner) with
entertainment nights and a modern
tucker. I have been a regular
here for 25 years. I love the Thai
chicken, or you could indulge
yourself with whitebait patties
and accompaniments.
In the evening it is so still. Stand
and gaze up at the Milky Way. Listen
out for swans on the lake and
morepork resting in the forest.
Top place to walk, run,
cycle, tramp, exercise:
Moana has many walking
and cycling tracks surrounding
the lake. All-day tramps on Mt
Te Kinga and Mt French, or
one-hour and three-hour hikes,
depending on your fitness level.
Stroll along the shore to take
in some fresh air and view the
wildlife.
Top experience not to be
missed:
Bain Bay on the western shore
is a must. A sandy beach is
sandwiched between the pristine
waters and the ancient rimu
forest of yesteryear. Its beauty
takes some beating.
Best kept secret:
Is its natural beauty.
WINE 27
Delightful drops from a hot season
• By Mark Henderson
THE MAJORITY of Central
pinot noirs on the shelves at
the moment are from the 2018
vintage.
This was an exceptionally hot
season from December through
until the beginning of March,
when cooler, rainy conditions
helped moderate the effects of the
summer. It tested the mettle of
the wineries, yet while most of the
2018 wines will not be extremely
long lived, they do offer delightful
drinking now. Alongside those
here today, a slew of late releases,
and a comparative young ’un.
2018 Valli Waitaki
Vineyard Pinot Noir
Price: $69
Rating: Excellent
Fragrant notes of wild herbs
with cooler strawberry and
darker fruits mingling. Sweet
cherry and spicy oak frame the
palate, adding a touch of
lead pencil, showing good
structure in the background.
There’s generosity of fruit
potential too.
2018 Rockburn Central
Otago Pinot Noir
Price: $49.99
Rating: Excellent to
outstanding
Darker fruited expression
offering mint/menthol, oak
spices and savoury nuances. A
depth of flavour that fills the
mouth, supported by fine-grained
tannins, as the sweet fruit mingles
with wild herbs and savoury
notes. Lovely texture, nice
balance and integration gives this
immediate drinkability.
Price: $49.99
Rating: Outstanding
Subtlety and elegance
rule, darker fruited, sawn
timber, spices, violets, growing
in the glass with sweet fruits
building. Wonderful intensity
and depth of flavour to the
dry, dusty palate and while
approachable now, the
powerful tannic structure is
built for the future. Ripe but
not sweet, the fruit hangs in the
mouth on the long, dry close.
Superb potential.
blueberry, stones, a piquancy
to this with hints of secondary
characters. Deceptive intensity
here, real power aligned with
silkiness, while red currant/red
fruits meld with lavender, leather
and savoury nuances as the
wine builds to a long, dry finish.
Suggestive of some bottle age; in a
Leaps from the glass with
lead pencil elements; florality
building. Berryfruit jus, char,
graphite and a tangy ‘‘raspberry
Noir
Price: $29
Rating: Excellent
Subtle nose at first, yet a
suggestion of volume as the
cherry, mixed berry and herb
notes swell. Firm at first, but
quickly fleshes out, developing
lovely flavour intensity as
savoury nuances add to the
interest. Stylish, good freshness
and well judged structural
backbone make this lovely
drinking now. Nicely done and
good bang for buck.
Chuck steak not just for casseroles
Ever thought chuck
steak is just a budget
cut of beef? In fact it
boasts a rich meaty
flavour akin to a ribeye,
and can be just as
tender. This easy recipe
uses a technique known
as a “reverse sear” to
deliver perfectly cooked,
tender chuck steak
every time
Foolproof chuck steak
with smoky chimichurri
2-4 servings
Ingredients
Steak
500-750gm chuck steak
1-2 tbsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
Smoky chimichurri
2 cups fresh flat-leaf parsley
1½ cups fresh coriander
3 garlic cloves, smashed
1 shallot, quartered
1 chipotle chilli
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
¼ cup red wine vinegar
1 tbsp lime zest
2 tbsp fresh juice
2 tsp salt
1 tsp dried oregano
½ tsp smoked paprika
Directions
Prepare the steak: Sprinkle
steak all over with salt and
pepper. Set a baking rack on
a baking tray and place steak
on rack. Let stand, uncovered,
for 1hr or overnight in the
refrigerator.
Preheat oven to 100 deg C.
Place baking tray with steak on
rack in preheated oven. Bake
TENDER: Not just the
domain of slow-cooked
stews and casseroles,
chuck steak can produce a
flavourful, tender meal with
a little preparation.
until a thermometer inserted in
thickest portion registers 40-
43 deg C for a medium-rare or
46-49 deg C for medium-well,
30-40min, or to desired degree of
doneness.
Remove steak from oven and
set aside. Heat a cast-iron or
heavy bottom non-stick skillet
over high. Add butter and extravirgin
olive oil to hot skillet, swirl
to coat. When oil just starts to
smoke, add the steak and cook
until well-browned, 1-2min per
side. Transfer steak to a cutting
board, and let rest for 10min
before slicing.
Prepare the chimichurri:
Process parsley, coriander, garlic,
shallot, and chilli in a food
processor until roughly chopped,
8-10 pulses. Add olive oil, vinegar,
lime zest and juice, salt, oregano,
and paprika. Process until
emulsified, about 1min.
chimichurri.
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
GARDENING ADVICE
A
You would be surprised just how many plants
you can propagate from cuttings. A little
experimentation can produce some exciting
results. What is important is the state of the
wood when you take the cuttings.
Today’s winning question came
from Richard Pierson.
Congratulations!
I enjoy growing my own plants
Q from cuttings. At present I have
only used Hydrangeas and
Rosemary. Can you give me
some other variates that I can
try? I give away any surplus that I have.
Preferably what is termed semi-hardwood (growth that
is fi rm but not hard), produces the most successful
cuttings. Wait for warmer weather before taking your
next batch of cuttings. Dipping fresh cuttings in rooting
hormone can improve the rate of success. Pumice
sand like Daltons Cutting Mix is the preferable growing
medium to place your cuttings.
You can start with some easy natives to propagate including
Hebes, Coprosma, Corokias, Macropipers, Melicopes,
Grisilinias. You can also try exotics like Lavenders, Santolinas,
Teucriums, Geraniums, Pelargoniums, Fuchsias, Plumbagos,
Buddlias and Westringias. Always date your cuttings as this will
provide a guide for future ones you wish to take.
Limited for space? Grow plants in containers
SIMPLE, uncluttered garden
design is especially appropriate
when space is limited.
Whether you want a serene
look or something dramatic, you
can achieve it by mass planting
just a few carefully chosen
plant species, each with strong
features.
Flowers are not essential (year
round good looks and healthy
foliage are more important), but
as seasonal highlights they can
make the garden all the more
interesting.
Mass planting by itself can be
dull. Break up the monotony by
choosing an accent plant that
can be repeated throughout the
design. Planting in pots adds
extra zing and makes it easy to
change or relocate your accent
plants when you feel like a new
look, or a change between seasons.
As well as accents, every garden
needs a strong focal point.
Often a sculpture, this could also
be a piece of furniture or garden
architecture, a water feature, or
just one stunning plant in a spectacular
pot.
Container gardening is a great
way to enjoy getting your hands
dirty. The trend is towards simplicity
– bigger pots and fewer of
them.
Classy containers deserve
classy plants, and those that last
the distance. For pots in prime
positions choose plants with a
strong well-defined shape, preferably
symmetrical so that they
look good from all angles.
When we plant whole groups
of a few carefully chosen varieties,
the effect is bold and deliberate,
bringing strength and
character to the garden.
But not all plants are suitable
for mass planting. Anything
with a downtime is going to be
a blot on your landscape for a
large part of the year. So the first
priority is to choose a plant that
looks great for at least most of
the year.
CONTAINERS: Big pots and fewer of them is best.
SPORT 31
Racing identity leaves enviable legacy
CANTERBURY’S racing
industry has lost one of its
long-time servants, trainer Tony
Prendergast.
The popular 84-year-old
trainer died after a short illness
on Sunday.
Prendergast, who trained in
partnership with his wife, Lyn,
from their West Melton property,
had been suffering from
cancer after being diagnosed a
few months ago. His death came
after a shattering week for the
family – with their home being
gutted by fire and with it the loss
of all their possessions, including
all their prized racing trophies
and photographs.
Kylie Williams, who completed
her apprenticeship with
the Prendergast stable and had
remained a life-long friend and
helping hand, had hoped to
provide a ray of sunshine last
Saturday for the family with a
win in the final event aboard
the Prendergast-trained Queen
Jetsun.
It was on Queen Jetsun last
September that Williams celebrated
a career highlight with
her 700 th career win, but last
weekend the mare had to settle
for second, the same placing
registered in the first race by
stablemate Volvik.
“It would have been good to
get that last winner for Pop,”
Williams said.
“He (Prendergast) was like a
father to me and I always called
him Pop. The best pop a girl
could ask for.
“I signed up with Pop and Lyn
when I was 17 and he taught me
so much. I’ll never forget some
of the pranks he pulled and
his laughter when you got him
back. He was one of racing’s true
gentlemen.”
Prendergast was a selfconfessed
battler who became a
well-known and popular figure
around the South Island racetracks.
It would be common to see
him give someone a flick with
his race book or a friendly punch
on the arm as he walked by, his
cheeky way of acknowledgement.
And there was hardly a more
popular occasion on course than
when his stable got a winner. The
delight on Prendergast’s face told
it all, he was loving what he was
doing and not about to stop.
Prendergast chipped in working
alongside Lyn right up until
his illness took over in recent
months, belying his age as he
continued to play his role in a
career in racing which stems
back to his youthful days as an
amateur rider.
The final win for the Prendergast
stable came last December
in the Timaru Cup with stable
star Who Dares Wins, who
finished fourth in last Saturday’s
Winter Cup at Riccarton.
In April last year Who Dares
Wins provided the Prendergasts
with a notable double, in the
Easter Cup and Canterbury Gold
Cup a week apart, then completed
a hat-trick at Riccarton.
Prendergast put paid to any
thoughts of his retirement in a
Love Racing interview after that
double.
“I’ve got no plans to stop. We
will keep going while we can. I
can still jump in the [harness]
cart and jog a horse for 40 minutes.
That keeps you fit.
“Training has never been an
easy game, and the overheads
now have made it harder, though
we are fortunate that we own
our own property and have good
facilities.
“You always have your lean
patches, then you win a couple,
and away you go again.
“We have never trained a big
team. We have usually had 12-15
horses in work, never more than
20, and every time we have a big
win, we really savour it.”
“I’ll never forget some of
the pranks he pulled and
his laughter when you got
him back. He was one of
racing’s true gentlemen.”
– Kylie Williams
From a family of six boys,
Prendergast was brought up in
Central Otago, and has been involved
with horses all his life. His
father raced standardbreds and
a brother, Dick, had considerable
success as a harness trainer.
After working on farms when
leaving school then becoming an
amateur rider, Prendergast took
out an owner-trainer’s licence
LONG CAREER: Tony Prendergast lost a
battle with cancer on Sunday. He died a
week after his home was gutted by fire.
His wife Lyn is pictured with pacer One
Direction. PHOTOS: RACE IMAGES
and made a remarkable debut
in the 1964-65 season when
preparing Rutanui, a nine-yearold
maiden, to win fresh-up at
Cromwell over 1700m at odds of
67/1. He then backed Rutanui up
two days later for another win,
over 2000m.
Rutanui was ridden in the
maiden victory by Prendergast’s
life-time friend, Brian Anderton,
who still remembers the occasion
clearly.
“We tried him out and he was
one-paced and not much good.
Tony got him sorted out and decided
to race him. He had a real
knack with horses,” Anderton
said.
Prendergast got the former
slowcoach Rutanui into winning
trim through farm work,
including cattle mustering, on
the East Otago farm he was then
managing.
“That also convinced me
that horses don’t need to do a
lot of galloping and I’ve never
been a great one for galloping,”
Prendergast said last year when
recapping his early days.
Prendergast worked as foreman
for Anderton’s astute father,
renowned Wingatui trainer
Hec Anderton, who had more
winners in the 1950s than any
other New Zealand trainer and
won three New Zealand trainers’
premierships.
“I spent about four years with
Hector and learnt a hell of a lot
from him,” Prendergast recalled.
Prendergast recorded his first
win as a professional trainer with
Isalei, at Omakau in 1971 and
boosted his income in those early
days working night shift at the
Mosgiel Woollen Mills.
An early star for Prendergast
was Lomond Queen, who became
the dam of Queen’s Pal, one of the
best horses for the stable. Queen’s
Pal won 14 races. Eleven of her
wins were in black-type races,
including a third in the Group 1
New Zealand 1000 Guineas.
St James was another stable
star, winning 11 races, including
five stakes races, and he gave
Prendergast a big thrill when
finishing third in the 1989 Hong
Kong Cup.
However, Prendergast rated Mr
Ay Bee, whom he part-owned, as
the best horse he trained “by a
country mile.”
In spite of being hampered by
injuries, Mr Ay Bee won 19 races
from 1225m to 2500m and took
six consecutive races as a fiveyear-old,
including a fresh-up
win over 1225m at Beaumont,
when ridden by Lyn Prendergast.
In a bid to reduce travelling
from Wingatui, Mr Ay Bee was
transferred to Takanini trainer
Ray Verner in 1979 after his
Brisbane campaign, in which he
finished second in the Group 1
Brisbane Cup (3200m), and for
Verner he won the 1979 Group
1 Avondale Cup (2200m) then
the Listed King’s Plate (1600m)
before breaking down in preparation
for the Group 1 Auckland
Cup (3200m).
Prendergast trained the
winners of 386 races and he
was proud of his record with
apprentices, including Williams,
Jan Cameron and Charlie
Brough, while his daughter Kerry,
also rode winners during a brief
career as an apprentice and has
had some success as a trainer.
Subaru joins hybrid bandwagon
IT WAS ONLY a matter of time
before the brand Subaru joined the
hybrid revolution, I always figured
that would happen.
What I don’t know is how much
of the technology that is fitted to
the e-Boxer range of engines was
developed by the Subaru Corporation
and if any was supported by
the Toyota Motor Co.
I say that because Subaru and
Toyota had joint collaboration
on the two-door sports car – the
BRZ and 86 – which resulted in a
very successful partnership, and
product.
I guess it’s not overly important
where the technology came from,
but the exciting thing is Subaru
now has a hybrid, well, two in fact,
the XV and Forester.
This evaluation surrounds the
XV, an Impreza-based sport utility
vehicle that is just a little smaller
than the Forester but taller than the
Impreza, and with higher ground
clearance (220mm). The XV is
funky, trendy, edgy in design, and
commands a lot of sales in New
Zealand. I particularly like the XV,
and I’m excited there is a hybrid
option.
The driveline is traditional
hybrid and traditional Subaru. First
and foremost, the 2-litre four-cylinder
horizontally-opposed engine
sits up front, it is coupled to an
CAR REMOVALS
CARS, VANS, UTES & 4X4 WANTED
NZ OWNED AND OPERATED FOR 24 YEARS
We use world class vehicle depollution systems
PRACTICAL: The Subaru XV has generous load space
underneath the tailgate. That area isn’t compromised by
the hybrid system.
SUBARU XV HYBRID: Boxer engine and hybrid system combine with four-wheel-drive.
electric motor which assists drive.
Power for the motor is supplied
by a lithium-ion battery which, in
turn, is recharged through energy
from vehicle movement such as
deceleration and braking. The
system also captures wasted brake
energy as you drive and redirects
that kinetic energy to recharge.
In certain conditions such as
when gently pulling away or driving
at low speeds, the electric motor
alone drives the XV, that is at
slow speed and for short distances.
When cruising, the petrol engine
alone operates, it also powers the
generator which recharges the
battery.
Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system
isn’t compromised by the addition
of hybrid technology. The XV (and
Forester) are true off-road champions,
and you can relax knowing
that all of the traditional XV
features are incorporated within
the driveline such as the X-Mode
off-road driver assistance package
which enhances grip on all manner
of slippery surfaces.
The XV hybrid also feels a lot
more energetic, the driveline is
feisty and responsive. Take into
account that there is 110kW and
196Nm from petrol power alone,
and if you add in an extra 12.3kW
from the motor then there will
always be a significant feel of acceleration
and performance.
Drive is no different either, power
is channelled through a continuously
variable automatic gearbox,
transition of drive is smooth and
seamless. Paddle shifters will allow
you to lock the gearing into any
one of seven pre-set steps.
In terms of figures, the XV
hybrid will scamper to 100km/h
in 10.2sec and will complete a
highway overtake (80-120km/h)
in 6.1sec. More importantly, if you
were a hybrid buyer you would
want it to give you good fuel usage
returns. Well, Subaru has really
upped the ante in this area right
across its range, and the XV hybrid
is rated with a 6.5-litre per 100km
combined cycle average. That compares
to 7l/100km for the standard
model. While the difference isn’t
huge, it all adds up over a period
of time.
During my time with the test
car I almost matched those figures
given I drove it with consideration
to the hybrid concept. I was gentle
on the throttle and did all that I
could to match Subaru’s claims.
When I took the test car back to
the dealership it was recording a
7.8l/100km average, which I was
fairly pleased with.
At 100km/h the engine is
spinning over at a gentle 1500rpm,
the instantaneous fuel usage figure
• Price – Subaru XV, $42,490
• Dimensions – Length,
4465mm; width,
1800mm; height, 1595mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
1995cc, 110kW, 196Nm,
seven-step automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 10.2sec
• Fuel usage – 6.5l/100km
registering just 4.2l/100km.
The XV hybrid also loses none
of its driving appeal. It is a fullyinvolving
car which makes you feel
good as a driver. That’s to do with
the four-corner drive system, grip
is high and attachment to the road
is constantly delivered to the driver.
The suspension is a fully independent
four-strut system. The
spring and damper rates are also
fully compliant, and as well as the
XV can perform off-road it still delivers
interior comfort to all occupants.
The suspension is absorbent
and seat structure is supportive and
containing.
I took the test car on a high
country loop that takes in a multitude
of challenging corners. Steerage
is sharp thanks to the quality
of the Yokohama tyres (225/60 x
17in), and body balance amazingly
well controlled given that at 1.6m
tall the XV could be excused for
working with the force of gravity,
but that’s not the case.
The XV hybrid is also well appointed
in terms of specification.
Major features include keyless entry
and ignition, the camera-based
Eyesight crash avoidance system,
connectivity platforms for a range
of cellphones, and a list of minor
features too numerous to mention.
It’s fair to say, though, the interior
of the XV is comprehensive with
several display panels providing
the driver and occupants with a
wealth of information, including,
of course, the status of the hybrid
system.
While the XV hybrid is a smart
piece of kit inthe first instance, you
also should take note of its price. At
$42,490 it is an absolute steal for a
hybrid with such calibre. That’s just
$5k over and above the standard
XV. At that price I’d certainly be a
starter, it compares markedly with,
say, Kia’s Niro hybrid at $39,990
(2WD) and Toyota’s RAV4 hybrid
at $43,490.
If you are interested as a buyer,
you’ll need to be quick, Subaru’s
2020 hybrid allocation to New
Zealand was miniscule, and
judging by just how good the XV is
in this form, I’m picking there’ll be
waiting lists very soon.
