Methodist church handed<br />

over for $3m renovation<br />

The Methodistchurchsite on Baring Square<br />

has beenblessed and the firstsod<br />

symbolically turned ahead of a12­month<br />

renovation and extension projectset to start<br />

soon.<br />

ReverendHeather Kennedytold asmall<br />

gathering on Sunday that the long­awaited<br />

building project would start at the end of the<br />

month.<br />

Once completed, the church would again<br />

be aplace of worship andservices andalso<br />

for the community.<br />

In aceremonial gesture Reverend<br />

Kennedyhanded over the keystothe church<br />

to building projectsite manager Mike<br />

McHaffie fromMcIntosh Builders.<br />

CouncillorRodger Letham, who<br />

represented the <strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council<br />

at the blessing,said thechurch had afond<br />

placeinhis heart.<br />

He had been marriedinit, his father­inlaw<br />

hadonce been its minister and he had<br />

enjoyed singinginit.<br />

It hadgreatacousticsand oncehad its own<br />

40­member choir,MrLetham said.<br />

The 12­month projectwill see the church<br />

strengthened, repairscarried outon<br />

damaged areas and the additionofanew<br />

extension on the south side.<br />

The project is expected to cost $3 million.<br />

Councilisbuilding its$51.6m newcivicand<br />

librarybuilding alongside the church.<br />

Solid waste service<br />

not wanted by all<br />

Rakaia resident Philip Brown is<br />

not in favour of <strong>Ashburton</strong><br />

council’s proposal to extendits<br />

solidwasteservice to his property<br />

andothers.<br />

SpeakingatTuesday’s revenue<br />

andfinance policy hearings, Mr<br />

Brown said he simply didn’t want<br />

or needthe service.<br />

He could recycle himself,and<br />

did,and he generatedlittle<br />

rubbish.<br />

Residents should be giventhe<br />

option to opt in, or opt out, he said.<br />

He objected to the cost of joining<br />

the service and just didn’t wantit.<br />

Ian and Judith Neumann were<br />

of the sameopinion,whilea<br />

numberofresidents stated they<br />

werealreadyable to recycle at<br />

Longbeach School.<br />

Some10ofthe 30 submitters<br />

stated theywereinfavour of the<br />

service extension.<br />

The proposal will add 162<br />

propertiestothe service fromJuly<br />

<strong>20</strong>21and will cost an estimated<br />

$230 per household.<br />

House prices down<br />

More homes havebeen sold,but at<br />

lowervalues in <strong>Ashburton</strong> district<br />

in Julycompared with the<br />

previous month.<br />

Themedian price forhouses<br />

sold in the districtinJulywas<br />

$330,000,compared with $370,000<br />

in Juneand $330,000 in July <strong>20</strong>19.<br />

The volumeofhouses sold in<br />

thoserespective periods were 49,<br />

44 and54.<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> District Council staff<br />

notedthe increase in sales<br />

recently,sayingthe numberof<br />

land information memorandums<br />

(LIMs) soughthad beensteadily<br />

increasingmonth by month.<br />

In April there were 14 LIMs<br />

issuedbycouncil,inMaythere<br />

were 51 andinJune 61; inJuly the<br />

figure was in the 80s.<br />

marketwith multipleoffers being<br />

received.<br />

Timaru’s medianpriceinJuly<br />

was $370,00, down from$387,000<br />

in June.<br />

In Canterbury, the medianprice<br />

increased6.7 percent year­onyearto$476,000.<br />
