LANTEK BRINGS ONE OF THE MOST CUTTING-EDGE EUROMAC

ROBOTS IN THE PUNCHING MACHINE INDUSTRY "TO LIFE"

THE ENTIRE PUNCHING AND SUBSEQUENT PALLETIZING PERFORMED BY THE KUKA KR 10 ROBOT IS CONTROLLED

USING THE LANTEK EXPERT PUNCH-PLUS AND LANTEK STACKMASTER SOLUTIONS

Lantek, has announced a collaboration

agreement with the Italian company,

Euromac, recognized worldwide as a

supplier of machines for working with sheet

metal, including CNC Punches, Benders and

automated sheet metal systems.

The agreement enables control of the

“sorting cell” programmed with the Kuka

KR 10, one of the most cutting-edge robots on

the market. It uses two punching solutions

from Lantek - Lantek Expert PUNCH-PLUS

and Lantek Stackmaster, automating the

unloading line for parts and their subsequent

palletization and storage.

The Lantek software solutions are

responsible for the whole process, which

starts with programming the CNC Punch.

During the punching process, the machine

ejects/unloads the parts through a hatch. The

parts then pass along a conveyer belt to an AI

vision table where a camera detects the

orientation of the fallen part. The Lantek

software uses this information about the

shape and orientation of the part to control

the robot’s suction cups positioning and

activating them to pick up each part. The

robot finishes by rotating and placing the

part in its correct location on the storage

pallet.

The full control of the punching and

palletizing process makes it possible to

automate the whole production cycle for

large volumes of parts, allowing production

to be completely unattended.

"The close collaboration between

Euromac and Lantek is a significant step

forward towards the full process automation

of punching lines and the subsequent

palletization of the parts, using state-of-theart

technology such as artificial vision

systems and robots. This technology

maximizes production speed and flexibility

and improves workers' conditions and

safety", states Francisco Pérez, director of the

OEMs channel at Lantek.

The sales manager at Euromac, Ferrán

Villanueva, highlights the importance of this

collaboration, “For us, this is a great

opportunity to use Lantek software for the

Kuka KR 10. It will allow us to optimize the

processes, reduce times and achieve efficient

operation, guaranteeing the highest quality

and tightest response times from this robot,

one of the most cutting-edge on the market.”

UK PARTNERS FOR GERMAN STURMER GROUP

CASE STUDY

SECOND KASTO STORAGE SYSTEM FOR

NON-FERROUS METALS STOCKHOLDER

Based in Bremen, AMCO Metall Service

stocks 7,000 tonnes of aluminium, copper,

brass and bronze in its 55,000 square metre

facility and delivers 25,000 tonnes annually

to customers mainly in the plant building,

metal processing, construction,

transportation and shipbuilding sectors. The

German family firm has 270 employees and

an annual turnover of around €100 million.

Increasing demand for cut-to-size

material meant that the company’s service

centre for semi-finished materials was

running out of space. So to streamline

efficiency for holding and picking material

including billets and plate, the company

installed a Unigrip 3.0 automated,

honeycomb-type cassette storage system. It

was built by KASTO, located some 600

kilometres further south in Achern. Since

then, AMCO has enjoyed fast access to its

materials, machined parts and remnants and

has consequently increased its premachining

and order picking productivity.

Jan Hendrik Schmidt, managing director

of AMCO said, “Growth in this area of our

business presented us with a challenge. We

needed additional storage space to expand

and also wanted to renew our conventional

racking system.

“The new solution had to ensure high

availability of metals and make efficient use

of the available space. Sawing to length, 3- to

5-axis prismatic machining and picking also

had to be interlinked with the system.

“To increase profitability, we were keen to

avoid damage to material caused by

handling and storage and we also wanted to

reduce order picking costs.”

KASTO was already a supplier to AMCO,

having manufactured and delivered in 2013 a

Unicompact 3.0 long goods storage system

that has proved successful in operation.

Mr Schmidt explained, “KASTO had

particular advantages, notably the

impressive degree of added value they

offered compared to competitors, ranging

from software development to the supply of

spares.

“Existing, proven interfaces ensured

simple integration into our ERP system and

KASTO’s employees gave us competent

advice before we placed the order.”

The Unigrip 3.0 industrial store in Bremen

has 1,365 storage locations and is 68 metres

long, over 21 metres wide and 6.7 metres in

height. Five types of cassette from 6.5 to 6.7

metres long and 1.6 metres wide hold the

stockholder’s materials, maximum load per

cassette being three tonnes. The storage and

retrieval machine (SRM) travels

longitudinally at up to 120 metres per minute

to ensure efficient material movement. Laser

measuring ensures precise positioning and

contour controls monitor that goods do not

overhang and hinder their transfer.

Via a standard Profibus DP fieldbus, the

proprietary KASTOlogic control orchestrates

all functions including drive controllers,

manual control units and weighing

electronics. AMCO can create or change data

quickly and receives reliable information on

inventories and cassette availability. Storage

zones can be managed to optimise the SRM’s

travel routes. Incoming orders are

automatically assigned to the relevant

processing stations. The Unigrip then

provides stock and remnants to the machine

tools and subsequently stores pre-machined

parts and remnants.

To speed fault diagnosis and help with

operational problems, KASTO’s service

centre in Achern can access the storage

system in Bremen remotely and control all

functions of the KASTOlogic. Changes to the

program or parameters can be carried out

cost-effectively, without the need for KASTO

staff to visit the site.

Mr Schmidt added, “Our investment in

the KASTO solution has paid off handsomely

and our goals and expectations have been

fully met. The storage facility perfectly fulfils

its intended functions of storing material and

as a buffer for holding pre-cut and machined

parts, which are logically stored and accessed

quickly and reliably.”

He is also pleased with other process

advantages. Damage to material during

transportation and handling has been

virtually eliminated and AMCO has been

able to reduce significantly its fleet of forklift

trucks, as the storage system delivers the

required materials to where they are needed.

Mr Schmidt concluded, “Cooperation

between our staff and KASTO’s employees is

very positive. Technical optimisations during

the running-in phase were quickly and fully

completed and ongoing adjustments take

place continuously and are efficiently

supported by the supplier.”

CLEANING

WALTER HELICHECKS’ AUTOMATIC CLEANING AND

LASER MARKING SPEEDS UP TOOL MANUFACTURING

Tool inspection and manufacture has been

made more efficient by the use of new

cleaning and laser marking facilities on

Walter’s Helicheck Plus and Helicheck Pro

measuring machines’ robot loader system.

The developments mean that users can save

valuable time by concurrently cleaning and

marking tools outside of the measuring area,

while the robot loader automatically

loads/unloads the measuring machine.

A clean tool is essential for a valid

measurement, says United Grinding

Group member Walter Ewag UK, which

markets the Helicheck range (as well as

the Helitronic series of tool

grinders/eroders) in the UK. Now, with

the new modules, tools are cleaned in an

ultrasonic bath and subsequently dried in

an air stream, which can be adapted to suit

varying tool lengths.

After cleaning then measuring, highquality

tool marking by laser is performed;

marking (without penetration) can be on the

tool shaft/end face with static or dynamic

data.

For complete flexibility, the robot loader

for these Helicheck models can be specified

with either or both cleaning and/or laser

marking, or the modules can be individually

retrofitted to existing, appropriatelyconfigured

robot loaders.

NEW PRODUCTS – NEW PRODUCTS – NEW PRODUCTS

GROUNDBREAKING AND FIELD-TESTED

OPEN MIND Technologies AG drives

forward automation and the integration of

additive manufacturing with the latest 2020.2

release of its hyperMILL® CAD/CAM suite.

The developers at OPEN MIND have also

implemented numerous functions to further

simplify everyday machining tasks.

hyperMILL® 2020.2 highlights include new

strategies for the machining of cutting edges,

upgrades for mill/turning, parametric

design in hyperCAD®-S and the

‘hyperMILL® AUTOMATION Center

Advanced’.

Plunge-milling cycles have been added to

the 3D and 5-axis strategies for the

machining of cutting edges. The material can

be removed by plunging with 3-axis or 5-axis

movements. The plunge-milling process

reduces vibration for surface edges with

steep walls, thus improving the surface

finish. Any rest material machining using a

smaller tool is easily calculated automatically

from the previous job. With 5-axis

machining, you can also reach undercut

areas, such as for cutting edges. The tilted

tool is specified by the lateral inclination and

in order to optimally adapt the retract

movement from the component, you can

specify both a distance, circular or linear

movement profile (video).

hyperMILL® already offers strong mirror

functions where the toolpaths for

symmetrical components are recalculated on

the basis of mirrored geometry data. Now

with version hyperMILL® 2020.2 OPEN

TOOL LIFE IMPROVEMENTS WITH

WALTER’S NEW AB735 SYNCHRONOUS

THREADING ADAPTOR

Tooling expert Walter GB has announced

the new AB735 synchronous threading

adaptor that is designed to minimise the

axial forces that occur during tapping and

threading – caused by the rotation of the

machine spindle and its feed travel – to

therefore reduce tool wear and, in

particular, thread flank wear while reducing

the chance of tool breakages.

In addition to extending tool life, the

lean, short design of the adaptor, which can

be used in all standard ER collet chucks, also

MIND enhanced the functionality. The

‘Mirror Path’ function enables simple

mirroring of the previously calculated

toolpaths. Here, the machining direction is

also mirrored and climb milling therefore

becomes conventional milling. Users benefit

now from shorter calculation time and

improved process reliability. Both methods

are available to provide the ideal solution for

all situations (video).

The user-friendliness of hyperMILL® has

been improved even further. For a faster

search in the tool database, the filter

properties are now integrated into the top

level of the user interface, meaning they are

always visible. The filter properties are preloaded

with the material from the job list and

the spindle holder from the machine

properties. Other tool parameters and

custom fields can also be used with the tool

database filter (video). Feature management

has also been improved to save time during

makes it ideal for use in tight spaces, for

example on turn/mill centres.

More cost-effective than comparable

systems, the AB735 features quick-change

exchangeable front pieces to enable

different thread sizes and tool diameters

(ER16 to ER32) to be used with the same

collet – and tools with and without internal

coolant supply - thus contributing to overall

tool cost savings.

01527 839450

www.walter-tools.com

programming. Now you can quickly locate

special feature types such as holes or pockets

even faster due to a new text search. These

filter functions allow nimble access through a

large customized tool database.

Round inserts, as well as rhombic, T, and

W inserts can now be used with 3-axis

simultaneous mill/turning. There is now a

function to control the approach and retract

movements by applying user-defined curves

for all turning strategies. This option unlocks

the potential for productivity and

programming optimization on workpieces

with areas that are particularly difficult to

reach – all movements are still collision

checked, despite the manual operations

(video).

The ‘hyperMILL® AUTOMATION

Center’ has been upgraded in hyperMILL®

2020.2 and OPEN MIND now offers an

optional advanced version that boasts

numerous additional functions and extensive

templates. These templates allow the user to

define and standardize complex processes

independent of the specific geometry from

any one CAD model.

All the individual steps for data

preparation and programming, right up to

simulation and NC program generation are

defined. Once you have defined a

manufacturing process, you can apply it to a

new model and have it automatically

executed. If there are any decisions that

cannot be made with confidence within the

automated process, the user can be prompted

to make the relevant choices during the

automation sequence. The user is

interactively guided through the individual

process steps, making it possible to program

the component in a fraction of the time it

would normally take.

Components can now also be modeled

directly in hyperCAD®-S parametrically.

This function is of particular interest for fast,

production-related designs. For example,

you can design a fixture plate parametrically

and change dimensions to define different

variants to the base model very quickly. It

can be simultaneously used in parametric

mode in hyperCAD®-S, while static models

can also be placed inside the same dataset.

Similarly, you can use a static solid model in

parametric mode and add parametric

features to it for a hybrid approach.

Parametric geometry data used in

hyperMILL® is associatively linked, and

when there are any changes, it is updated

automatically (video).

hyperCAD®-S also brings new interfaces

in release 2020.2 for CATIA V6 3DXML and

Rhino 3dm. PMI data is also available now

for CATIA, Creo, JT, NX, SOLIDWORKS,

STEPPING TOWARDS AUTOMATION WITH NORELEM’S

EXPANDED STEPPER MOTORS RANGE

norelem, the global standard components

specialist, has boosted its range of stepper

motors, with the three most popular sizes

NEMA 17, NEMA 23 and NEMA 34 now

available to order online.

With Industry 4.0 well underway,

norelem’s new stepper motors enable a wide

range of applications to be automated.

Whether its rotating robotic arms,

automating milling machinery, or moving

and sorting parts on production lines,

engineers and manufacturers can use the

components for a variety of processes.

The new motors are highly precise,

efficient and maintenance-free, making them

economical and cost-effective. They are fitted

with all the typical operating modes of

regular positioning systems and control,

including automatic setup, referencing,

parameter and program input.

Marcus Schneck, CEO of norelem, said,

“We know that automation is key to many

processes and to driving efficiency in

engineering and manufacturing. This is why

we’ve added the three most common stepper

motor sizes to our range.

“Adaptable to almost any control system,

our standardised products can be integrated

into new and legacy machinery. We’ve made

them easy to integrate too, with software for

the motors downloadable straight from the

norelem website, and different interfaces for

the components, such as Profibus and CAN,

available in the range.”

All of norelem’s stepper motors are quiet

and provide low-resonance running without

step losses. They also enable a constantly

controllable operation with self-monitoring

of the system and voltage monitoring of the

output stage.

The components are also designed to

withstand harsh environmental settings. All

motors are equipped with a robust EMC

(electromagnetically compatible) housing

and are rated to IP64 for dust and water

protection. They can operate in an ambient

temperature of up to 50° C without forced

ventilation.

The flange dimensions of the stepper

motors are 42 mm (NEMA 17), 57 mm

(NEMA 23) and 86 mm (NEMA 34). The

retention torques of the various models

range from 0.43 Nm to 8.4 Nm. The step

angle is 1.8° for all models.

The stepper motors are controlled via

braided cables, and engineers can easily

program the stepper motors via PC or laptop.

They are designed for a control voltage of 24

to 36 V DC and have 2 output ports and 6

input ports. Connection cables, SMPS's,

interface converters and 1-stage gear drives

are available as accessories. All stepper

motors are suitable for continuous operation.

Engineers can find the stepper motors

LARGER CAPACITY

5-AXIS MILL-TURN

CENTRE FROM

BROTHER

Manufacturers wishing to carry out prismatic and rotational

metalcutting in one hit within a 300 mm by 440 mm by 305 mm

working volume can now take advantage of the very high

productivity of a Brother 30-taper, 5-axis mill-turn centre. It

follows the Japanese machine tool builder's introduction of the

Speedio M300X3, which joins the smaller M200X3 that offers 200

mm of X-axis travel. Sole agent for sales and service in the UK and

Ireland is Whitehouse Machine Tools, Kenilworth.

Both multi-tasking machines are characterised by an 18.9 kW /

40 Nm tool carousel deploying 22 cutters at up to 10,000 rpm, or

16,000 rpm with the BIG Plus dual-contact spindle option. Below it

is an A-axis trunnion carrying a high output, direct-drive, C-axis

turning table. Rated at 4.6 kW / 1,500 rpm in the new machine, it

is over one-quarter more powerful than the table in the smaller

model and generates up to 102 Nm of turning torque. When

milling, 30 m/min cutting feed rate maintains a high level of

productivity and 400 Nm of C-axis clamping force ensures

accuracy is maintained.

A generous A-axis rotation range from +120 to -30 degrees

allows machining of features at the rear of components and

facilitates loading and unloading of parts at

the front of the machine. The axis is tilted by

a backlash-free roller drive to promote

accurate metalcutting. A holding force of 500

Nm, without the need for mechanical

EFFICIENT PARTING OFF AND

GROOVING ALONG THE Y-AXIS

New toolholder variants are available for the

S100 system from Horn Cutting Tools to

enable parting off by feeding along the Y-axis

on turning centres that have the extra degree

of freedom on the tool carrier. The method

enables effective parting and grooving using

high cutting parameters, resulting in short

machining times. Furthermore, due to the

extra stability of the system, there is the

option to part off large diameters with a

compact toolholder and to use narrow

groove widths.

High moments of force occur when

parting off workpieces of larger diameter,

but the space available in a machine often

does not allow tools of large cross section to

be used. With the new design of toolholder,

the cutting forces are diverted to the main

cross section of the insert. It results in

increased rigidity of the system as a whole

for any given toolholder, enabling higher

feed rates to be used.

Horn offers two holder variants for the

parting off process. For the 842 and 845

modular grooving system, there is a

cartridge with cutting widths of 3 mm and 4

mm. There is also a reinforced grooving

blade in identical widths. Both variants are

equipped with an internal coolant supply via

clamping, delivers high speed indexing

combined with rigidity when milling parts at

an angle or turning them in the horizontal

plane.

the clamp and through the support.

Maximum groove depth is 60 mm. In

addition, the S100 system provides an option

for direct cooling through the cutting insert.

mikegreen@phorn.co.uk

www.phorn.co.uk

Non-productive time is minimised by

repositioning the X, Y, Z, A and C axes

simultaneously during tool change, which

takes place in 1.5 seconds chip-to-chip.

Linear rapids are 50 m/min and the A and C

axes move at up to 50 and 200 rpm

respectively. The spindle motor's fast

acc/dec and a highly responsive servo

control enable a start-up and stop time of 0.2

second. The turning table reaches 1,500 rpm

from zero is less than 0.3 second.

Accessibility for workpiece transfer is

ergonomic and the wide door opening can

be automated to allow robotic component

load / unload from the front, enabling

extended periods of unattended and

overnight running in high production

environments.

Alternatively, all Speedio machining

centres are equipped to interface directly

with a purpose-built Feedio vision-based

robotic component handling system. Jointly

developed by Brother and ABB, whose 6-axis

robot loads and unloads components from

the side, the plug-and-play unit is able to

serve one or two machines.

Swarf management is comprehensive,

with chip shower and through-tool coolant

options. A further design feature is ultra-low

use of energy, both during standby and when

cutting metal. A high-speed C-00 control

system with monitoring of tool change and

cutting load completes the package.

LATEST CITIZEN

CNC SLIDING-

HEAD LATHE

UPGRADED

WITH CHIP

CONTROL

SOFTWARE

When turning long-chipping malleable

materials, Citizen's low frequency vibration

(LFV) software fragments swarf into

manageable chip sizes, whereas normally it

would become a stringy bird's nest entangled

around the tool and component. The latest

sliding-head bar auto on which the

technology has been made available is the

new Cincom A20-VIILFV, while it can also be

found on one of the company's Miyano fixedhead

models.

All machines have been fundamentally

redesigned with uprated ballscrews,

lubrication system, guarding and other

elements to provide additional strength for

withstanding the oscillation caused by very

short periods of intermittent air cutting that

produce the chipbreaking action.

Productivity is maximised by avoiding

having to stop the machine repeatedly to

remove clogged swarf, facilitating minimally

attended operation and enabling lights-out

running.

A further advantage is the avoidance of

the need to fit a high pressure coolant system

to encourage swarf breakage, which involves

high capital investment and increased

running costs.

Embedded in the operating system of the

control system, the chipbreaking software

synchronises axis servo drive motion with

the spindle speed. The software version on

the A20 is suitable for longitudinal and face

turning as well as drilling and involves

multiple oscillations per revolution of the

main spindle. The function is highly

controllable and can be programmed using

G-codes to switch on and off during a cycle,

as required.

This is distinct from the functionality

being part of the program itself, as is the case

with alternative CNC pecking macros, which

have the disadvantage of rubbing the tool. It

raises the temperature, causing workpiece

distortion as well as built-up edge on the

tool, shortening its life.

In contrast, LFV oscillation of the tool by

tens of microns allows coolant to penetrate

the cut more efficiently for the brief periods

when the tip lifts clear of the component

surface, reducing heat and actually

prolonging cutter life, in some instances by as

much as five-fold. For the same reason, depth

of cut may be increased substantially even

when processing tough materials, often

eliminating the need for a roughing pass and

significantly shortening cycle times.

The Cincom A20-VIILFV can be used with

a guide bush as a conventional Swiss-type

automatic for machining shaft-type

workpieces, or without a guide bush for

producing shorter parts from less expensive

stock with minimal bar remnant wastage.

The guide bush can quickly and simply be

mounted and removed. In sliding-head

mode, machining length per chucking is a

generous 200 mm to reduce cycle times when

producing long, slender components.

The 7-axis A20 machine platform, which

is capable of 2-axis simultaneous cutting,

offers a high performance-to-price ratio for

the production of parts from 20 mm diameter

bar, optionally extendable to 25 mm (1 inch).

The main spindle is rated at 3.7 kW / 10,000

rpm for optimal machining of smaller

diameter stock and has an opposed 1.5 kW /

8,000 rpm sub-spindle with an X2-axis

enabling simultaneous machining on the

front and reverse ends of components. Both

spindles have one-degree indexing and a

0.001-degree C axis.

Tool capacity is 21, with four driven

stations for cross machining having a

maximum speed of 6,000 rpm. The four back

tool post stations may optionally be live.

Positioning speed is fast at 32 m/min for

short non-cutting times. Idle times can be

reduced further using the pre-processing

function in the Fanuc-based Cincom control

dedicated to this machine model. It analyses

the machining program before it is run to

minimise processing and calculation times.

NEW TOWERMAX FROM ARMSTRONG TAKES

CHILLER EFFICIENCY TO ANOTHER LEVEL

A new control solution, launched by

Armstrong Fluid Technology, will enable

operating efficiencies of chiller plants to be

improved significantly, delivering energy

savings of up to 45% and water savings of up

to 12%.

New TowerMax is add-on software for

Armstrong’s Design Envelope 9521

Integrated Plant Control System. It reduces

energy and water usage by harnessing

Armstrong’s proven advanced relational

control technology (already making

significant reductions in energy usage of

pumps) to optimise the operation of chiller

plant. The set of performance algorithms

resident in TowerMax use the flow data from

the installed Armstrong Design Envelope

(DE) pumps to reduce energy consumption

and water usage through more effective heat

balance optimisation, and intelligent Best

Efficiency Staging of individual items of

plant, in line with changes in building load.

At the heart of this solution is the

Armstrong DE 9521, which controls the

entire plant, including cooling towers, chilled

water pumps and condenser pumps in

addition to the water-cooled chillers. Lower

installed cost is possible with this solution, as

Onboard Sensorless technology (already

resident in the pumps and other system

components) eliminates the need for external

sensors and the related installation costs.

Operational costs are also minimised as heat

transfer across the plant is controlled

accurately and optimised,

whilst Armstrong’s

Active Performance

Management technology

facilitates real time

capacity calculation and

c o n d i t i o n - b a s e d

maintenance. The cooling

supplied for the building

is automatically matched

more closely to changes

in demand, and the

system identifies

potential maintenance

issues before they impact

on efficiency to optimise

lifetime performance of

the plant.

The Armstrong DE

9521 control system

integrates with all brands of

chillers, pumps and

automation systems, and is

designed as an ‘out of the box’ solution for

faster installation. It is able to operate

independently or via seamless connection

with any central BMS. Real-time optimisation

is provided by Armstrong’s ECO*Pulse

performance management service, and

TowerMax has been launched as an add-on

to this system to drive further efficiency

improvements in chiller plant operation.

Capabilities of the

Armstrong DE 9521

system with

ECO*Pulse and

TowerMax include

the ability to control

either identical or

chillers (in this

scenario ‘identical’

refers to chillers of

the same make and

model, same

tonnage, same

minimum flow and

same interface). Up

to five chillers, five

cooling towers and

five pumps can be

controlled, and there are no

limitations on plant size and cooling

capacity. All five chillers can be different

sizes, and employing up to two different

communication interfaces. Pumps can also be

of different sizes.

This solution is available for new

installations, or as Armstrong’s new Design

SKF EXTENDS THE JIS COMPLIANT BALL BEARING

UNITS WITH ITS NEW 300 SERIES

The new UC 300 ball bearing units from SKF

feature superior sealing and stronger locking

and are interchangeable with all JIS (Japanese

Industrial Standards) housings. The

introduction of the new products extends

SKF’s UC range of ball bearing units, offering

a comprehensive choice of reliable bearings

that are available with short lead times.

The new UC 300 is ideal for use in highly

contaminated industrial environments,

where bearing life can often be shortened

through the ingress of process materials such

as mud, dust, wood chips or water. To

overcome these problems, the UC 300 series

is equipped with field-proven sealing

technology. It also has asolid base design of

housing to minimise areas that might

otherwise trap dirt or moisture.

When bearings are subject to systemic

vibration, the results can include increased

shaft imbalance, misalignment and loosening

of locking mechanisms. The UC 300 series

addresses these problems with its robust

construction and high strength locking

system. Designed to cope with operations

characterised by higher peak loads and lower

rotation speeds, each unit also features a

grub screw locking system set at an angle of

62°, which gives even better holding power.

“Whatever their need, engineers can now

find proven, high-quality and reliable ball

bearing units from a single, quickly

accessible and trusted source,” says Jerome

Pommereul, SKF Product Manager. “Thanks

to their greater contamination and vibration

resistance, they will last longer, maximise the

performance of rotating equipment and

minimise productivity losses due to bearing

failure. Customers will also see cost savings

through fewer replacements and repairs. “If

you are an OEM, the reliability of our

bearings will reduce operational costs

relating to warranty cases, engineering and

development.”

UC 300 series units are available with

bores ranging up to 100 mm. Typical

applications will include conveyors, belt

pulley and chain transmissions, and cranes.

They will be of particular benefit in areas

such as material handling, agricultural,

construction machinery, HVAC systems,

textile industry, metals and mining.

igus ANALOGUE CONFIGURATOR HELPS IN THE SEARCH

FOR THE RIGHT IGLIDUR PLAIN BEARING MATERIAL

When it comes to selecting wear resistant

tribo-polymers, the user is spoilt for choice at

igus. To find the right iglidur material for the

appropriate application, igus has now

developed a new compact analogue

configurator for 39 standard iglidur

materials. Using overlay cards, the user can

determine the suitable material.

Alternatively, the iglidur online expert

system helps in the selection and calculation

of the service life.

“With the sample box, users can quickly

and easily find the right iglidur bearing

material for their specific application,”

explains Robert Dumayne, dry-tech director,

igus. “It is very simple to use; if a bearing

with elevated temperature resistance is

required, the corresponding overlay card is

placed over the bearings so that it filters out

the unsuitable materials.” Other property

overlays, such as ‘high loads’, ‘dirty

environments’ or ‘chemical resistance’, can

also be placed over the bearings until a

suitable selection is left.

igus has been presenting the offline

concept as a dry-tech sample box for a

number of years. In the new, more compact

version, users can now see which materials

are also available for free design as semifinished

products. In addition, it covers the

igus 3D printing service and 3D printing

material to produce prototypes and small

quantities. The new configurator covers 39 of

the 57 iglidur materials available, which the

ones used in most plain bearing applications.

An iglidur catalogue is also enclosed for

parts ordering.

But not only offline, the online tools

developed by igus help in the selection of the

right iglidur bearing material, such as the

iglidur online expert system. The online

configurator - like its analogue counterpart -

is easy to use. The user only needs to enter

the application parameters and the expected

service life of all suitable iglidur materials is

displayed. For this, the expert draws on the

data from the igus test laboratory. All

bearings are available from stock in

quantities of 1.

SICK SensorApps HELP PEOPLE

TO KEEP THEIR DISTANCE

Responding to the need for technologies to slow

the spread of Covid-19, SICK has developed

PeopleCounter and DistanceGuard SensorApps

which help to ensure that people keep to the

recommended distance apart in working and

public spaces.

The SICK PeopleCounter is a SensorApp

based on a machine learning algorithm running

on SICK’s MRS1000 3D LiDAR sensor. One or

more sensors can be easily set up to count

people at entry and exit points, or allow users to

control the number of people occupying a predefined

area in real time. Because the system

can reliably detect human contours, while

ignoring other objects, customers or workers

are counted accurately as they enter or leave

buildings or other pre-defined spaces.

The PeopleCounter works by using a

specially-developed on-board algorithm to

evaluate the point-cloud data generated by the

MRS1000. Because the SensorApp can use data

from the MRS1000’s four 275° scanning layers

to determine direction of movement, the

number of people in a monitored area can be

updated in real time. The system can identify

more than one person in parallel independent

of their direction (In or Out) within a range of

up to 3.5 m.

As it only sees the human outline, the SICK

PeopleCounter is able to process data at highspeeds

and is completely anonymous with no

need to detect or record any personal location

or identification data. A master/slave mode

makes it possible to combine several LiDAR

Scanners to track larger areas with multiple

entry and exit points, such as shopping centres,

airports or stations.

With eight multifunctional digital

input/output connections on the device, the

system can easily be set up to keep track of the

number of people via mobile, PC and cloudbased

systems, as well as integrating with wider

controls or security systems where necessary.

SICK’s Social DistanceGuard App works on

the SICK TiM 2D LiDAR Sensor to monitor

areas where the recommended distance

between people must be upheld, e.g. in a queue,

and provide an alert if they are too close. A

signal, in the form of a light, audible alarm, or

visual signal is triggered as soon as the distance

between two people falls short of the minimum.

The on-device settings can be used to input

or change the required distance at any time. The

presence of people can be detected and

evaluated thanks to the SICK TiM’s 270°

scanning capability and range up to 25 metres.

SICK’s UK Product Manager for Imaging,

Measurement and Ranging, Neil Sandhu

commented: “SICK’s rapid response to develop

social distance monitoring technologies was

enabled by the versatility of the AppSpace

software development platform that facilitates

the rapid development of plug-and-play

solutions.

“When combined with SICK’s

programmable, high-performance LiDAR

scanning technology, the result is simple, selfcontained

devices that are quick to install, and

easy for customers to integrate into wider

customer control or monitoring systems.

“We’d be delighted to hear from any

customers who have ideas for further

applications that could be adapted to provide

technology solutions during the current

pandemic.”

NEW

TRANSPARENT

PRESSURE

TANKS

The newly launched CT Series clear pressure

tanks from SR-TEK are reducing research and

development time by allowing engineers and

scientists to observe reactions and make

changes in real-time.

Composed of toughened Borosilicate glass

or Acrylic, the new CT Series can be pressurised

up to four bars, come in 0.5L, 2L, 5L and 10L

sizes and are the only commercially available

transparent pressure vessels.

More than 150 have already been sold for

use in research and development with a further

250 being used in the manufacture of

automotive and electronic parts, for precision

dispensing of adhesives and sealants and

lubricant spraying.

Major global manufacturers including ABB,

BMW, Mitsui Components, Teledyne, Johnson

& Johnson, and Morgan Plc are already making

use of the transparent pressure vessels.

The CT Series is the latest in a number of

advanced pressure tanks developed by SR-TEK.

Loris Medart founded the business in 2014

following a 15-year career in the fluid industry

having become frustrated with the limited

functionality of existing vessels. He said: “All

too often I’d find that complex manufacturing

systems were let down by pressure tanks that

were no more complex or refined than a giant

paint pot. This was fine for 1970s style mass

production when fluids were simple and cheap,

but proves costly and unproductive in the

modern era of small-batch, agile manufacturing

and high-cost composite fluids.

“To combat this we’ve created a range of

carefully engineered small and large scale

vessels that reduce fluid waste, improve

efficiency and are cost-comparative to existing

models.”

Loris continued: “The CT Series takes this to

a higher level by allowing developers,

engineers and manufacturers to monitor and

adjust conditions in real-time, halving

development and testing time and speeding up

maintenance and monitoring.”

The CT Series is made from stainless steel

303 (316 available on request), Acrylic or

toughened glass and can be fitted with

detection, monitoring and agitation.
