UNSUNG HEROES Getting the job done is key to Crowley’s success by Steve Pecar Our industry is full of people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the job not only gets done, but gets done right. We can probably all name a few of these diligent workers, but one name in particular gets mentioned when the subject come up. Scott Crowley. As lab manager at AME-Materials Engineering, Crowley has been doing all the little things – that amount to big things – for almost 20 years, and while he may be classified as an unsung hero, you don’t have to look far to find those who will sing his praises. Tom Dziedziejko, Directory of Quality, Infrastructure, for AECON, says Crowley is the guy people turn to when help is needed. “He is always there, for everyone,” says Dziedziejko. “Internal clients, external clients, it doesn’t matter. When people in this industry need help they turn to Scott and he always answers the call.” Dziedziejko points out that Crowley’s experience has grown from the way he has worked his way up through the industry. He has done it all. “He’s completely comfortable in so many situations because he has the experience,” says Dziedziejko. “His knowledge is spectacular, plus he cares about people. A lot of times you will find him out on sites on the weekend just because somebody needed help and he knows how to solve the problem.” While Crowley admits that it can be difficult talking about your own accomplishments, he appreciates the respect he has earned in the industry. He says it hasn’t always come easily; that long hours and hard work have gotten him to this point. It has paid off. A graduate of Newfoundland’s Cabot College program for civil engineering technology, Crowley says his early years were spent out in the trenches with the paving crews and crushing operations, learning how it all fit together. “That on-the-job experience led me to where I am now,” Crowley points out. And where he is now is doing just about everything his role requires. Crowley oversees all of the asphalt mix designs for AECON’s Brampton plant and AECON’s mobile plants along with mix designs as needed to support AECON’s Ottawa hot mix production operations. He also makes sure there are no production or placement issues. “I guess I have the reputation for getting things done, but we have a large team here and it really is a group effort,” he continues. “I can be a stickler at times. I have to make sure everything is done right because results need to be precise, but I think that is what people appreciate.” Another colleague from AECON, John MacKay, says Crowley has become somewhat of an institution in the industry because of his professionalism and commitment to quality. “He’s the guy people turn to, especially if they are in trouble and need help,” says MacKay. “He probably does more mix designs than anyone in the province. He is the problem solver.” MacKay says if working around the clock is what is needed to get the job done, then Scott Crowley will be doing just that. “Nobody does it better,” MacKay says. “It’s the truth.” Steve Pecar is a Mississauga-based writer, editor and designer. 32 OHMPA | ASPHALTOPICS
