Well known publican to
get back into the ring
• By Chris Barclay
WELL KNOWN publican Dean
Calvert is stepping back into
the ring 27 years after his final
professional boxing bout to raise
money for charity.
Gentle ribbing about a sparring
session between Calvert and another
seasoned combatant Danny
Masterson has manifested into a
fundraising fight card for the Trek
charity for children at Cowles
Stadium on October 31.
Calvert, who has the Valley Inn,
in Heathcote, had a 7-0 record as
a professional, last fought in 1993.
“Danny and I were in the New
Zealand team together. We never
fought, that’s how it all come
about. It was just a bit of banter
one night,” he said.
“Danny said we should have a
sparring session to see how we’d
go against each other. One thing
led to another over a couple of
beers and I said: ‘Stuff the sparring,
let’s have a fight for charity’.’’
Calvert said there would be five
amateur and four corporate fights
on the card which hopes to raise
at least $20,000 for the Christchurch
arm of the charity formerly
known as Variety Bash.
And clearly he was taking the
main event seriously.
The Bird In The Bamboo Cage
by Hazel Gaynor
War imprisoned them. Friendship set them free.
China, 1941. With Japan’s declaration of war on
the Allies, Elspeth Kent’s future changes forever.
When soldiers take control of the missionary
school where she teaches, comfortable security is
replaced by rationing, uncertainty and fear.
Ten-year-old Nancy Plummer has always felt
safe at Chefoo School. Now the enemy, separated
indefinitely from anxious parents, the children must
turn to their teachers – to Miss Kent and her new Girl
Guide patrol especially – for help. But worse is to come
when the pupils and teachers are sent to a distant internment camp.
Unimaginable hardship, impossible choices and danger lie ahead.
Inspired by true events, this is the unforgettable story of the life-changing
bonds formed between a young girl and her teacher, in a remote corner of
a terrible war.
The Mystery Woman
by Belinda Alexandra
In a small town, everyone is watching ... Secrets, scandal and betrayal
in 1950s small town Australia: the stunning new novel from bestseller
Belinda Alexandra. She had thought Shipwreck Bay was simply a remote
town where people were bored senseless with their little lives. Now she
saw its virtuous facade hid something darker, more sinister.
Rebecca Wood takes the role as postmistress in a sleepy seaside town,
desperate for anonymity after a scandal in Sydney. But she is confronted
almost at once by a disturbing discovery - her predecessor committed
suicide. To add to her worries, her hopes for a quiet life are soon
threatened by the attentions of the dashing local doctor, the unsettling
presence of a violent whaling captain and a corrupt shire secretary, as
well as the watchful eyes of the town’s gossips. Yet in spite of herself she
is drawn to the enigmatic resident of the house on the clifftop, rumoured
to have been a Nazi spy.
Calls for plan to manage tourism
• By Louis Day
CALLS HAVE been made for a
plan to manage the impacts of
tourism on the Banks Peninsula.
The Banks Peninsula Community
Board has called for a
destination management plan to
be developed. It believes the plan
is needed in order to address
current and future
economic,
social and
environmental
issues posed by
tourism.
The board has
Tori Peden
called for the
plan to focus
on cruise ship
management, freedom camping,
infrastructure demands while
looking at how many and what
type of visitors provide the best
value for the community.
The Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment
outlines destination management
as the “management of all
aspects of a destination
that contribute to a visitor’s
experience,” bringing together
various stakeholders to achieve
sustainable tourism.
Development of such a plan
revolves around the perspectives,
needs and expectations of not
only visitors but also local iwi,
ACTION NEEDED: The Banks Peninsula Community Board has called for the
development of a destination management plan for the Banks Peninsula.
the tourism industry, businesses,
residents as well as central and
local government.
MBIE states that adopting a
development management plan
can enable areas to respond to
changing conditions and determine
the type of tourism that is
most beneficial to all sectors of
the community.
Community board chairwoman
Tori Peden said the development
of the plan would require
a multi-agency approach and
significant community input.
“Perhaps there is an
Environment Canterbury aspect
of it and also a Department of
Conservation and Ngai Tahu
involvement. It is a big project
and we can’t do it alone, that’s
why we are wanting to work as a
group,” she said.
She thought the plan was needed
now more than ever under the
current Covid-19 circumstances.
“Going forward we are
not going to have as many
international tourists as usual
over the next year or two,
however, we think this is the best
time to be proactive rather than
reactive.”
She said the board would be
advocating for funding to be
allocated towards the initiation
of the project from the city
council’s Long Term Plan
budget.
Pair have
held several
national titles
• From page 1
The 49-year-old started his
preparations last December and
ramped up training with threehour
sessions on the treadmill
during the Covid-19 level four
lockdown before hitting the gym.
“It’s been great for the health,
I’ve dropped from 115kg down to
87kg,” he said, noting his opponent
has also worked into fighting
shape.
“Danny was 108kg and now he’s
down to 92kg,” Calvert said.
The pair have held several
national titles while Calvert
and Masterson also took
ownership of the Jameson Belt
for New Zealand’s most scientific
senior boxer in 1992 and 1993
respectively.
Calvert fought for New Zealand
at the Oceania championships in
Auckland in 1989 with Masterson
and was confident he was still
equipped with his necessary
pugilistic skills to last six 2min
rounds, at the most.
“It’s slowly coming back. It’s
still there, I’m just a bit slower
than I used to be. Hopefully, I’ll
finish him in the second or third,”
he said.
Clock winds back for
former race car driver
• By Matt Slaughter
A FORMER race car driver
took a ride down memory lane
when a Jaguar C-Type visited his
retirement village in Sumner.
Denis Stanton, who lives
at Edith Cavell Lifecare and
Village, was able to relive
his racing days when Craig
Pidgeon, the son of one of
Stanton’s race car partners, took
him for a spin.
In his heyday, the 81-year-old
drove race cars including an
Austin A35, an Austin A40
Farina and a Ford Anglia at race
tracks throughout New Zealand.
He was one of the first people
to drive on Ruapuna Raceway
in Templeton when it opened in
1963.
“I raced at Ruapuna, Wigram,
the track in Blenheim, the one
in Timaru, and Waimate.
“It was just a hobby. My
parents were dead against it, you
know, they didn’t like me doing
that sort of thing but, looking
back on it, I think it kept me
alive because I never had a
smash.”
He said the ride around Sumner
and Lyttleton took him back
THRILL: Edith Cavell Lifecare and Village resident Denis
Stanton was taken for a drive in a classic Jaguar C-Type by
Craig Pidgeon.
to his younger days.
“It was like growing up again.
“We drove over the hill to Lyttelton
and around Summit Rd
which was rather nice actually,”
he said.
He said Pidgeon kept to the
speed limit for the duration of
the journey.
The retirement village’s other
residents were able to get a close
up look at the classic race car.
No fibre internet
for settlements
FIBRE BROADBAND will
not extend to a clutch of Banks
Peninsula settlements despite
a community board bid to get
shovel-ready funding from the
government.
The Peninsula board’s pitch
was rejected on the basis it was
not considered cost effective
given the sparsely populated terrain
of an essentially rural area.
Knocking-back the plan,
Broadcasting, Communications
and Digital Media Minister Chris
Faafoi said most peninsula communities
will have broadband in
2023.
It will be provided by the rural
broadband initiative, which use
cellular and wireless technologies
to get to remote locations, he told
the board.
“Based on these network
deployments, it is estimated that
once the programme has been
completed, approximately 98
per cent of people living on the
peninsula will have broadband
available to them.”
The board wanted a “shovel
ready” initiative to get fibre
broadband to Lyttelton West
to Charteris Bay, Okains Bay,
Pigeon Bay, Le Bons Bay and
Birdlings Flat.
The settlements are the most
populous on the peninsula with
no planned fibre rollout.
The plan would “inject jobs
into the local economy, aiding
recovery from Covid-19,” board
chairwoman Tori Peden said in a
letter to the minister.
On behalf of her board, she
said it was unacceptable communities
in the greater Christchurch
area did not have mobile
networks or access to reliable, fast
broadband.
It was “critical our communities
have access to the broadband
infrastructure required to stay
reliably connected with each
other and key services.”
Many people in the far-flung
communities continued to need
broadband for work, remote
learning and socialising during
the Covid-19 pandemic.
The peninsula was periodically
isolated during natural disasters,
so there was a pressing need
and ongoing need to improve
broadband, the minister was told.
Faafoi told the board has
asked officials to explore how
connectivity gaps can be
addressed.
a focus for board
COMMUNITY wellbeing
is top of mind an a
plan that will also focus
on improving roads and
footpaths, and protecting
and maintaining
biodiversity and recreation.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community
Board’s priorities plan for
2020-22 outlines a raft of
ideas to tidy and improve
the inner city east suburbs.
Communities in the
southeast have been
without a swimming pool
since the Woolston Pool
closed in 2009, but this
will change when Te Pou
Toetoe is finished.
It sits alongside Linwood
Park, and board wants
both developed as a
coherent whole, especially
when it comes to parking.
It wants an integrated plan
for the park, and better
connection with Linwood
College.
The board says it
will advocate for the
continuation of a
Phillipstown Community
Hub, and for Lancaster
Park to be developed
alongside the community.
Broken and damaged
footpaths were affecting
people with mobility
issues, the elderly, and
people using wheelchairs
and pushchairs. the board
would push to get things
fixed in response to
community concern, and
for discretionary funding
to make it happen.
It is also keen to “green
the concrete jungle”
by identifying suitable
locations for streetplanting
on berms and
traffic islands, and to
activate the Greening the
East Working Party to
develop a spatial plan for
the area.
Funds would be sought
to make this a pilot project,
to develop the plan, and to
provide for work and land
purchases.
Light industrial
growth made Bromley
a busier place, and the
board wants the local
traffic management plan
reviewed ahead of a plan
to deal with current issues.
It is keen for speeds to
drop and for heavy traffic
to be diverted on to nonresidential
roads.
It notes some years
have passed since the
initial development of
the suburban centres
masterplans for Linwood
Village, Sumner Village,
Ferry Rd and Main Rd.
These may need to be
updated.
The board wants the
amenity and ecology of
the Heathcote River to
improve. It has significant
pollution issues, and
the raft of projects
seeking to improve its
amenity sometimes seem
uncoordinated.
Climate change will
force changes on the area
as, over time, it deals with
sea level rise and coastal
inundation.

Cold water fundraiser buys lifesaving equipment
SUMNER AND Taylors
Mistakes Surf Lifesaving Clubs
will enter summer with new
lifesaving equipment thanks to a
group of cold water swimmers.
The Scarborough Dippers
plunged into the wintery ocean at
7am every morning during July
and in the process raised $5800
to be divided between the two
clubs.
The money will go toward
equipment such as rescue tubes,
binoculars and training boards
for junior surf lifesavers.
It was the fourth year the Scarborough
Dippers held the Wet
July challenge.
Group founder Kerry Newton
said two of the dippers are active
members of the surf clubs. Surf
lifesavers play a vital role in protecting
the public over summer.
“As a group we all love the sea,
but know how dangerous it can
be. Having the skills and knowledge
of the surf lifesavers on our
beaches means will can all enjoy
the water safely.”
Wayne Simmons, from the
Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club,
said Covid-19 restrictions had
affected other funding.
“This year has been a tough
one for the clubs, so funding
generated from an initiative such
as Wet July has meant we can
invest in the equipment needed
to keep our local beaches safe,”
Mr Simmons said.
Local talent on show at art exhibition
APPEAL: Mt Pleasant School’s
art fundraiser will showcase
more than 40 local artists.
• By Bea Gooding
MT PLEASANT School’s
biggest annual fundraiser will
feature more than 40 local
artists.
The Mt Pleasant Memorial
and Community Centre will
next week become an art gallery
and home to more than 500
pieces of art.
The art will be sold and profits
will go to projects at the school.
It last year helped the
construction and completion
of a new library, which is
among other site developments
following the earthquakes.
Event organiser Julia Metcalfe
said the focus of this year’s appeal
was keeping kids active
through sport.
The school had a decade
without a hall. It was rebuilding
a new one so needed additional
funding to help buy new sports
equipment.
Event organisers initially
struggled to get the event
over the line due to public gathering
restrictions caused
by Covid-19.
They were determined to see
it happen, even if postponement
was the answer.
“It has been a real struggle.
Too much work goes into it,
so it won’t be cancelled – just
postponed.”
The exhibition starts
with a gala evening next
Friday, including live art
auctions,
and will run in conjunction
with the Mt Pleasant Farmers
Market the following day.
Christchurch artist Harriet
Millar is the exhibition’s featured
artist.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
The gala evening is a ticketed
event.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Sept 4, 2010 – A Decade On
Defiant locals gathered after quake
• By Chris Barclay
THE VALLEY Inn regulars
reacted to the September 4,
2010, earthquake with a show of
defiance that left an insurance
assessor dismayed, and publican
Dean Calvert unfazed.
Hours after Tour of Duty
played in the long-standing
Heathcote bar, the locals
soldiered on, with one final
session in the severely damaged
triangular-shaped watering hole.
Calvert was on the scene
shortly after the quake struck at
4.35am and by daybreak locals
had already assembled amid the
wreckage.
“We were sitting around the
well having a beer, the whole
time locals were coming and
going, it was strange times,”
Calvert remembered.
“The insurance guy came
down and goes: ‘What are you
doing? You need these people out
of here’.
“I told him they’re having
their last beer in the pub. This is
part of their lounge for all these
people. We’re not going to be
reopening are we?”
But Calvert, who took over the
lease the day his parents George
and Janet bought the building in
2004, pessimism was eventually
misplaced.
The family never wavered
about building a new Valley
Inn, and had the February 22,
2011, earthquake not intervened
Calvert says they could have
reopened a year to the day the
original “fell over”.
“We would have been on top
of it but we had to recheck the
ground (after February).
“We didn’t start building until
May but the local tradies all offered
to work. It was all hands on
deck just to get the pub back.”
Then mayor of Christchurch
Bob Parker reopened the bar
23 days after the quake’s first
anniversary, with the brick-lined
well the only remnants from the
original built in 1877.
While the Valley Inn was
quickly re-established, Calvert
laments the same cannot be said
for the central city.
“I don’t know how it’s taken
so long. You look at Japan when
they had that tsunami and earthquake,”
he said.
“They were probably rebuilt in
two or three years at the most.
And we’re still arguing with
bloody politics and bits and
pieces.
“Everyone’s p****d around too
much organising stuff which
they can’t organise.
“We were lucky. The earthquake
happened on the 4th of
September and the bulldozer
went through on the 10th.
“We were lucky we got on to it
so quickly. Looking at some of
the sites around town it’s a bit of
shame that people haven’t organised
things a bit better.”
Calvert received the permit to
rebuild the day before the February
22, 2011, earthquake and
never had any second thoughts
in the following days.
“It was like a meeting place for
the locals, it needed to be rebuilt.
The local church did a BYO pub
on Fridays for a while. They
knew the Valley was a meeting
place for Heathcote.
“Everyone used to go there and
talk to their mates, some had
been there 50 years.”
Funding available for community groups
From the board
Tori Peden, chair
Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū/Banks Peninsula
Community Board
ONE OF my favourite tasks on
the community board, is giving
out funding to community
groups that are doing amazing
things on, and around Banks
Peninsula.
We have just agreed to grant
around $160,000 from our
Strengthening Community
Fund.
This is for a wide range of expenses
and projects, a lot was to
help cover operational expenses
and wages (mostly part-time),
but other projects include water
safety, youth and pre-school
projects, as well as supporting
neighbourhood watch, the
installation of community notice
boards, community newsletters
and volunteer recognition events.
We have also just found out
that there will be further $20,000
for our community as part of
the council’s extra $500,000 for
community funding. We will
find out soon what criteria will
be for this funding, either way
it is more money for our community.
I have been involved with
many community groups over
the years as a volunteer, or committee
member, and I know firsthand
how community funding
helps support the groups do what
they do along with thousands of
hours of volunteer time that goes
into these projects.
At the local body elections
last year, we heard how one of
the candidates was going to cut
community funding, I was truly
upset. How good do you feel
when you have just been to your
neighbourhood barbecue? The
Summer with Your Neighbours
fund contributes towards street
barbecues, community breakfasts,
or even neighbourhood
SOCIAL: The Summer with Your Neighbours fund
contributes towards street barbecues.
afternoon teas, it is yet another
example of how we can help as a
small contribution.
I was at my local biannual
neighbourhood get-together the
BIRDS OF THE ESTUARY
Tanya Jenkins is the manager of the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, a
non-profit organisation formed in 2002 to protect one of New Zealand’s most
important coastal wetlands. Each week she introduces a new bird found in
the estuary. Her column aims to raise the understanding of the values and
uniqueness of the area.
other day, and we all said how
great it was to catch up with
each other, rather than just a
wave or a two-minute chat in the
street.
One of our neighbours is
doing renovations, another is
looking for another horse, and
they all asked how I was doing
post-surgery. We do not live in
each other’s pockets, but we do
look out for each other. We keep
an eye on properties while the
owners are away, and we all tend
to recognise when a certain dog
plays a Houdini and is out on the
road again visiting the neighbourhood.
Community funding helps
with more than just a few
sausages, it in many ways helps
us be part of a richer community.
On that note, this is a huge
shout-out to all those that
volunteer in our community.
For the volunteers the help with
washing the dishes at the local
rugby club, with pest control,
with planting days, those that
help run the committees, and
everything in-between, these
are all important roles in the
community and are very often
unnoticed. I/we see you and
thank you, without those small
acts our community would not
be the place we all love to be part
of.
THE SILVER-EYE/tauhou, also
known as the wax-eye, is a tiny
olive green bird, only weighing a
mere 10gm and it has a white ring
around its eye.
It may be small but what an
amazing flyer, having flown from
Australia to New Zealand during
the mid-80s. It is now one of our
most abundant bird species and
found anywhere from our coastal
wetlands to the foothills of the alps.
Because it found its way here
by itself, it is classified as a native
bird. The male and female look
exactly alike and are one of the
most common bird species you
will attract if you have a bird
feeder in your garden.
They are most likely to look for
feeders during the winter season
when the birds flock together
looking for food. If you place
lard and fruit in them you are
very likely to have them hanging
around for a few weeks.
During the 1990s ornithologists
banded the silver-eye in Dunedin
and that way learned the distances
they will fly to find a food
supply as birds were discovered
several weeks later as far south
as Invercargill and as far north as
the Banks Peninsula.
Any other season they will find
food easily as they eat anything
from aphids, grass seeds, spiders,
caterpillars, fruit, berries, nectar
and seeds making the silver-eye
an important seed distributor of
the kowhai, kahikatea and native
fuchsia.
These friendly little birds are the
architects of beautiful cup shaped
nests filled with spiderweb, thistledown,
moss and lichen making for
soft and warm homes for up to five
chicks at the time and pairs will
raise several clutches during spring
and summer.
If it was not for the fact that it
only lives for three to four years
our skies would be filled with
silver-eyes so shows once again,
how nature manages to balance
out the populations of each
species.
We’ve got your
next step sorted.
Recognition for work with families
• By Bea Gooding
JAN NOTTINGHAM’S passion
for supporting families of
young patients seeking medical
treatment in Christchurch has
been recognised.
The Ronald McDonald House
night supervisor has been
named as a finalist for the Westfield’s
Local Heroes awards.
Each year, Westfield centres
across the country recognise
nominated role models for the
positive benefit their work has
on the community.
“It felt very humbling to have
the privilege of being one of the
finalists,” said Nottingham.
“It’s not even a job for me,
I’m doing something I love –
making a difference to families
coming through the door and
taking some of the weight off
their shoulders.”
Nottingham lives at the RMH
full-time working night shifts,
making sure families felt at
home while staying at the house,
going above and beyond in doing
so.
Whether it was offering a
shoulder to cry on, providing
entertainment for children or
making sure guests had meals to
come back to after visiting their
child in hospital, she has been
a guaranteed source of comfort
since taking up the role in 2012.
Landing the job as a night
supervisor was a silver lining
after the February 22, 2011,
earthquake destroyed her home.
“I was one of many. I’m lucky
that mine has been all sorted as
lots of people are still struggling
with theirs long after the earthquakes,”
she said.
“My home-based business no
longer happened, but in hindsight,
as one door closed another
door opened for me.
“And that door was an amazing
door as it allowed me to take
a new journey into the next stage
of my life – being a part of people’s
lives and giving back.”
It was not always easy to
witness families in times of
distress, Nottingham said, but
the rewarding feeling of creating
a welcoming environment far
outweighed the challenges she
faced.
“Once I started, I knew there
was nothing telling me that
I’d made the wrong decision. I
believe I’m still going to be here
About 30 volunteers took
part in the planting bee, which
coastal pathway group chairman
Hanno Sander said helped
establish “another jewel along
the pathway.”
It was the first community
planting project along the
pathway. The residents
association helped buy plants to
supplement donations.
The pathway is a joint
Wine
Delightful drops
from a hot season
• By Mark Henderson
THE MAJORITY of
Central pinot noirs on the
shelves at the moment are
from the 2018 vintage.
This was an exceptionally
hot season from December
through until the beginning
of March, when cooler,
rainy conditions helped
moderate the effects of
the summer. It tested the
mettle of the wineries, yet
while most of the 2018
wines will not be extremely
long lived, they do offer
delightful drinking now.
Alongside those here today,
a slew of late releases, and a
comparative young ’un.
2018 Valli Waitaki
Vineyard Pinot Noir
Price: $69
Rating: Excellent
Fragrant notes of
wild herbs with cooler
strawberry and darker
fruits mingling. Sweet
cherry and spicy oak frame
the palate, adding a touch
of
lead pencil, showing
good structure in the
background. There’s
generosity of fruit here,
a sweetly fruited element
building and good length.
This has drinkability off the
bat but potential too.
www.valliwine.com
2018 Rockburn
Central Otago Pinot
Noir
Price: $49.99
Rating: Excellent to
outstanding
Darker fruited expression
offering mint/menthol, oak
spices and savoury nuances.
A depth of flavour that fills
the mouth, supported by
fine-grained tannins, as the
sweet fruit mingles with
wild herbs and savoury
notes. Lovely texture, nice
balance and integration
gives this immediate
drinkability.
2016 Doctors Flat
Price: $49.99
Rating: Outstanding
Subtlety and elegance
rule, darker fruited, sawn
timber, spices, violets,
growing in the glass with
sweet fruits building.
Wonderful intensity
and depth of flavour to the
dry, dusty palate and while
approachable now, the
powerful tannic structure is
built for the future.
Ripe but not sweet, the
fruit hangs in the mouth on
the long, dry close. Superb
potential.
2016 Domaine
Thomson Surveyor
Thomson Central
Otago Pinot Noir
Price: $55
Rating: Very good to
excellent
Talc and potpourri lead,
shifting to mint/herbs,
savoury touches and warm
leather.
Flirting with sweet ‘n’
sour nuances, oak noticeable,
with powerful tannins
getting the salivary juices
going, a youthful gangliness
at first.
This grows enormously,
an Italianate tanginess
bringing delightful freshness.
Perfumed nose, licorice,
blueberry, stones, a
piquancy to this with
hints of secondary
characters.
Deceptive intensity
here, real power aligned
with silkiness, while red
currant/red fruits meld
with lavender, leather and
savoury nuances as the
wine builds to a long, dry
finish. Suggestive of some
bottle age; in a lovely now.
Pinot Noir
Price: $29
Rating: Excellent
Subtle nose at first, yet
a suggestion of volume as
the cherry, mixed berry
and herb notes swell. Firm
at first, but quickly fleshes
out, developing lovely
flavour intensity as savoury
nuances add to the interest.
Stylish, good freshness
and well judged structural
backbone make this lovely
drinking now. Nicely done
and good bang for buck.
Tasty Bites
Show me the way to tamarillo
Tamarillos are available
in winter and spring,
when many other fruit
are out of season. As
well as being a good
source of vitamin C,
tamarillos contain
significant amounts of
iron, phosphorus and
vitamin A
Poached tamarillos in
honey and vanilla syrup
4 servings
Ingredients
8 red tamarillos
1 vanilla pod
1 cup caster sugar
1 cup water
2 tbsp honey
4 light ice cream slices
Directions
Cut a cross in each tamarillo.
Blanch in boiling water for 30secs
then refresh in cold water. Peel
the skins and slice into 1cm
rounds.
Halve vanilla pod and scrape
seeds into a saucepan. Add pod,
sugar, water and honey. Stir over
low heat, without boiling, until
sugar has dissolved. Increase heat
and simmer uncovered, for 5min.
Poached tamarillos in honey and vanilla syrup.
Add tamarillo slices and simmer
for 2min. Allow to cool in syrup.
Serve fruit and syrup over ice
cream.
Tamarillo loaf cake
10 slices
Ingredients
145gm butter, softened
½ cup caster sugar
2 tbsp honey
2 large eggs
⅔ cup plain flour
2 tsp baking powder
¼ cup almond meal
Splash of milk (optional)
5 large tamarillos, peeled and
cut into 3 thick slices
Directions
Preheat oven to 180 deg C.
Grease and line a 25cm x 13cm
loaf tin. Dust the bottom lightly
with flour.
Cream the butter, sugar and
honey until light and fluffy. Add
eggs, one at a time, and beat until
combined (don’t worry if the
batter curdles). Fold in the sifted
Tamarillo loaf cake.
flour, baking powder and almond
meal, then mix. The batter should
be light and somewhere between
a stiff and dropping consistency.
If it’s too stiff, loosen by
adding a little milk.
Put the tamarillo
slices in a single layer
on the base of the
prepared tin. Scrape
the batter over and
smooth. Bake for 45-
50min or until an inserted
skewer comes out clean.
Leave to cool for 15min, then
invert onto a plate so that the cut
tamarillos face
upwards.
Choice of bright colours for Mirage
I’VE ALWAYS dismissed it, but
now I fear I’m colour blind.
The reason being is that when
I picked up a new Mitsubishi
Mirage from the dealership, I
asked the very friendly salesman:
“Is it the brown car out the
front?’’
He replied by saying it wasn’t
brown, but yellow, and we got
into a debate. We finished by
agreeing it was a mustard colour
and, as such, it is very unusual
and difficult to describe. It is the
colour in the photograph that accompanies
this article, it is vivid
and not a colour you often see on
today’s roads.
However, I’ve been assured it
is a popular choice and, as in my
case, a colour which draws interest
and discussion.
The new colour coincides with
a new exterior design for the Mirage.
The new generation model
is sharper, less rounded, it is edgy
and bold up front. There’s also
a new interior package, there’s a
lot more kit in the car, especially
for safety, while the controls and
functions have been further
designed for ease of use and simplicity.
Even though the Mirage is
built in Thailand, it encompasses
the easy-to-use Japanese design
philosophy.
Inside the compact body shell,
the wee Mirage makes good use
of its proportions. It’s a bit a of a
squeeze in the rear for any more
than two occupants, but there is
appropriate leg and head room,
likewise up front. The driver sits
a little high in the seat, but other
than that the driving position is
comfortable. For those who are
less than agile, getting in and
out of the driver’s seat is a breeze
because of its height, there’s no
stress put on the hips.
Elsewhere, the Mirage sits
on much the same platform
as before, although as I’ve just
alluded to, there are upgrades
throughout which further
enhances its five-star Australasian
New Car Assessment Program
safety rating.
Under the rear hatchback area
lies a 235-litre load area, extending
to 912-litres with the rear
seats folded. That translates into a
useful load carrying area, it easily
accounted for a Kiddie-family
load of groceries from Pak’N
Save.
At the other end sits a 1.2-litre,
three-cylinder, twin-camshaft,
12-valve petrol engine. It has
modest power outputs of 58kW
and 102Nm, but the Mirage is
light at 895kg so the engine creates
useful, adequate and thrifty
performance.
Mitsubishi has been busy
refining this engine. There’s no
CAPABLE: The Mirage’s load carrying area can house a
family load of groceries.
MITSUBISHI MIRAGE: Honest three-cylinder engine has great fuel economy.
denying the characteristic tone
that accompanies the three-pot
design, but it’s not overbearing
and I quite like the honest, deliberate
way in which it sounds.
Drive is through continuously
variable transmission. There are
no surprises here and no driveractivated
controls. What you get
is a simple system that works
well. CVT doesn’t load the engine
which allows it to work within
its own freedom parameters, it
never feels low on revs, pick-up
is always delivered at the driver’s
will.
The Mirage is no powerhouse
and acceleration fits within its
design concept, it will make a
standstill to 100km/h in 13sec.
However, what does matter the
most is what the Mirage achieves
in terms on fuel usage, Mitsubishi
claims a five-litre per 100km
combined cycle average. During
my time in the test car I did a
lot of inner-city commuting and
short low speed journeys, even
so, the fuel usage readout was
listing an average of 6l/100km
when I took the car back to the
dealership.
That included my long open
road journey which offered an
amazing 3.4l/100km instantaneous
figure at 100km/h, the engine
• Price – Mitsubishi Mirage,
$21,990
• Dimensions – Length,
3845mm; width, 1665mm;
height, 1510mm
• Configuration – Threecylinder,
front-wheeldrive,
1193cc, 58kW,
102Nm, continuously
variable automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 13sec
• Fuel usage – 5l/100km
spinning over freely at 2000rpm.
Three-cylinder engines are
generally strong on torque and
it responds well to mid-range
throttle request, an overtaking
manoeuvre (80-120km/h)
can be achieved in 9sec. With
the freedom of CVT the engine
builds revs and initiates momentum
quickly, well akin to its role
anyway.
The Mirage also feels light from
behind the wheel, the electric
power steering system doesn’t
afford a lot of feedback, but the
tyres (175/55 x 15in Bridgestone
Potenza) are of high quality and
have high grip levels.
When pushed into a corner the
Mirage leans a little, the spring
and damper rates are set soft,
while that affords a comfortable
ride, there is a little handling
trade-off. The front-strut/rear
torsion beam suspension isn’t engineered
for quick cornering, but
it is in keeping with the role the
Mirage is expected to play. In the
urban environment it is comfortable
and practical.
It is also the perfect city runabout
with vision and manoeuvrability
well manufactured into the
car. Take, for example, its turning
circle of just 9.2m.
The Mirage arrives here in one
specification at $21,990, although
recent advertising material
suggests you can pick it up for
less than $20k. It sits in a pretty
crowded small car market, but it
wins with its personality and high
levels of trim.
I like it for its build quality
and engineering aspects which
are just so downright honest,
bearing in mind that Mitsubishi
has a 10-year/160,000km
driveline warranty and a fiveyear/130,000km
vehicle warranty
incorporated into every Mirage
purchase.
As for the colour, I’d be
choosing something that I could
define accurately, if that is at all
possible.
