Growing up with five siblings had its challenges,especially because my mother raised all six ofus all on her own. Money was tight for us andour biggest struggle was our financial situation,so things weren’t always easy. We grew up inhousing commission and relied on the SalvationArmy to help, mostly around Christmas time.My mum always worked but we still neededassistance to ensure that we had the basics, likeschool uniforms and food. It was hard seeing herstruggle and knowing that there was nothing Icould do about it. Even after so many years, thisis actually my main incentive for doing better,staying motivated, and striving towards success.I went through a great deal of hardship duringmy childhood and didn’t want my mum to haveto worry about me anymore which was, and stillis, one of my main incentives when it comes tobusiness. I wanted to be able to provide a betterlife for my family, and to prove to myself that Icould prevail through adversity. I refused to let atough childhood dictate my future and deter mefrom reaching my goals. Witnessing my mumraise six kids on her own inspired me endlessly.I made a promise to myself that no matter howhard things got, I would keep pushing until Iachieved what I’d set out to do. Once I completeone challenge, I create a new one and use thesame motivation to fulfil the next task/businessventure.I started AMR Hair & Beauty when I wasfourteen. I’d always been interested in business.Even in high school, I purchased MP3 playersfrom Alibaba and sold them at school to otherstudents. It didn’t work out, needless to say,but after working within the beauty industry forthree years at the time already and getting thoseglimpses of success, it just made sense to moveforward within this industry.I noticed that the large gap between qualityproducts and low pricing, so I listened to thecustomers and thought of ways I could improvethe market for affordable hairdressing products.At the age of fifteen, I hired my first employeeand was quickly learning what worked and whatdidn’t. Before I knew it, I was trying to buildrelationships with suppliers and was learninghard and fast about business management skills.Back then, it was just about finding a way toget past the barriers. Age was one of the keyobstacles for me since no one wanted to fund afourteen year old with no business experience.Traders refused to sell to me because I was soyoung – I had to tell them that my dad couldn’tmake the meetings and that I was there on hisbehalf. I went as far as flying to Italy to meet withsuppliers and nearly got turned away during thefirst meeting. I was still in school at the timetoo, and my mother insisted that I finished Year12 before I could leave school to pursue mybusiness. I had to juggle work life and schoolingfor a few years. It’s all just about figuring out howto get around the roadblocks by staying true toyour end goal.There were definitely times when I felt like givingup. I sacrificed a great deal to get to where I amnow and it wasn’t always easy. I had to reinvestevery cent back into the company and I didn’thave a social life at all. My company failed manytimes before I finally got it right. One of my veryfirst businesses burned to the ground after yearsand years of hard work – it was heartbreaking. Atthe time, it was easy to think that I couldn’t moveforward because of my age and the struggles thatcame with starting a business so young. I justhad to keep pushing boundaries and finding waysto overcome the misfortune. Every time I feltclose to quitting, I thought of my family and how Iwanted to prove to myself that I could do this.057
