The Trail and District Arts Council announces 6 Beats Apart, a series of limited seating shows at The Bailey Theatre this fall. Since closing the Bailey Theatre doors in mid-March Executive Director Nadine Tremblay has been thinking of new, safe, and fun ways to bring the live entertainment experience back to the community. Nadine Tremblay said, “After the decision was made to cancel all performances this spring and summer, because of the restrictions on large gatherings, we felt that a mix of intimate shows from BC artists would bring a fresh spin to our programming, while keeping our staff and patrons safe.” Each show will be for a group of fifty people, providing a small club, exclusive atmosphere, but with the great sound and lighting of The Bailey. Attendees will be able to sit in their social bubble of up to six people with ample space around each group to maintain physical distancing. Anyone attending will have to adhere to safety protocols to ensure social distancing and to prevent mingling. Full refunds will also be given to anyone who can no longer attend if they feel ill. A selection of well-loved local performers will be bringing the community back together. Jazz series favourites Melody Diachun & Friends will bring us together on Saturday, October 10, followed by John McLachlan’s music multimedia show, Call it Home, on Friday, October 16. Clinton Swanson fans will love the cool Lazy Poker Blues Band on Saturday, October 24, while country fans will ‘yeeha’ when Son of John opens for Lisa Nicole on Saturday, November 14. Bringing the laughs on Thursday, November 19 will be award-winning comedian Mike Delamont with his Socially Distant Stand Up Comedy Tour, with the world beat funk of nine-piece Hornography on Saturday, November 28. Rounding out the shows will be the Clinton Swanson R&B Revue, a high energy eight piece performing old school soul, R’n’B, and blues, on Saturday, December 12. Trail & District Arts Council Nearly $100 million in benefits delivered by CBT Columbia Basin Trust provided $97.3 million for programs, initiatives and capital investments to positively impact the communities and people of the Basin, as released in its 2019/20 Annual Service Plan Report. This includes $68.6 million in grants, $12.2 million in capital projects to support economic development and broadband infrastructure, along with $9.2 million in business loans and $7.3 million in real estate and commercial investments. Continued efficient and reliable operations of its jointly owned hydroelectric facilities in the West Kootenay along with investments in real estate and business loans, saw revenues increase to $85.4 million, helping the Trust continue to address the 13 priorities set out in the Columbia Basin Management Plan. These priorities guide the Trust’s efforts to support communities and were advanced in 2019/20 through 2,157 projects along with the introduction of new programs and initiatives. “Working with partners and communities, we’ve kept moving forward on the things that the people in the Basin have told us matters to them including affordable housing, childcare and the environment,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Columbia Basin Trust President and CEO. “We are grateful for their vision, support and collaboration over the last 25 years and are deeply appreciative of how we have been able to grow and evolve as we worked together to serve the people and communities in the region. “Now, as we continue to adapt to the public health challenges of COVID-19, we are looking ahead and asking residents what’s most important to them over the next 18 to 24 months, what matters most to their family, what matters most in their community, and how can we work together to address those priorities.” The Trust is working on finalizing a short-term strategic plan to determine its focus over the next 18 to 24 months. Residents had until September 11 to provide their feedback. The new plan is expected to be released later in September. “The past six months have been difficult for communities and residents, but it has also shown how strong and resilient we are as a region,” said Strilaeff. “As an organization, there have been valuable learnings for our staff and Board about how we work with communities in ways that are most meaningful for them. We are looking forward to hearing from residents and incorporating their feedback to develop a short-term plan that is relevant and purposeful as we continue to navigate a challenging and evolving situation together.” The Trust’s Annual General Meeting took place online on September 18. RDCK wins a 2020 Sustainable Communities Award The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is pleased to announce it has been selected as a winner of a 2020 Sustainable Communities Award for exceptional work in the Visionary Award category for Accelerate Kootenays. The award honours and celebrates the most innovative environmental initiatives in cities and communities across Canada. In collaboration with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) and Columbia Basin Trust, the Accelerate Kootenays Project was the first community driven collaborative strategy to build a clean transportation network by installing public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EV) throughout the region within communities. It was coordinated over three years, at the cost of $1.89 million, and involved multiple partners with varying expertise to transform a rural region into one that facilitates EV travel. The project successfully demonstrated how regional governments and organizations can collaborate to deploy a charging network through strategic partnerships: to locate station siting and regional appropriate technology and outreach.
