12 WELCOME TO EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE (EYFS) AT DOVER COURT We know that starting school for the first time can be both exciting and also a little bit daunting, with so many new faces and routines. When your little one becomes a Doverian we will welcome them into our warm and caring community. Great teachers spark creativity and a love of learning in their students. All our teachers are fully qualified, with years of experience nurturing young ones. Together with committed teaching assistants, they ensure that all our Doverians are happy learners, allowed to make progress at a pace that suits their individual needs. We know that all children grow and develop at their own pace and that they make the best progress when they follow a learning path that is right for them. We welcome children between ages 3 and 4 to take their first steps into education in our friendly Early Years classes. Our EYFS day offers just the right balance of structure and active learning. Your child will gradually get used to the routine of school whilst having plenty of opportunities to explore and learn through play – while having fun! OUR CURRICULUM As a Doverian, your child will receive a truly international education in a supportive environment. Our Early Years curriculum is developed within the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. This is a framework used across the UK, for learning, development, and care of children from birth to five years old. Through consultation with Early Excellence advisors in the United Kingdom, our Early Years programme has been developed in line with research and best practice. Seven areas of learning and development shape our curriculum, all of which are important and interconnected. They are explored through topics that capture your child’s interest and excite them. The first three areas are considered the Prime Areas and a stronger emphasis is put on these. • Personal, Social and Emotional Development • Communication and Language • Physical Development The Specific Areas are: • Literacy • Mathematics • Understanding the World • Expressive Arts and Design As part of a flexible curriculum, your child will be encouraged to explore and develop at their own pace in activities based around each of these areas. We like to talk about our learning as stretching and supporting. In areas that your child is mastering we stretch them so they can reach even further. In others, where your child might need a bit more practice, we are there to support them. Students thrive most when they work to their full potential. Our aim is that all our Doverians will be equipped to think for themselves, set their own path, and excel in it. We enable the children to build empathetic relationships and we foster respect and care for all.
13 OUR SPECIALIST LESSONS Your child will be introduced to Mandarin, music, physical education, swimming and computing in age-appropriate lessons, delivered by our specialist teachers. Mandarin is taught by native language specialists, through thematic units and topics, developed to make learning engaging. Speaking and listening skills are embedded by using language games, songs, rhymes or poems, stories, repetitions, role-play and hands-on activities. The music curriculum at Dover Court has been designed to ensure students of all ages and abilities have access to high quality music-making through a range of practical activities. We love getting out the djembe drums or ukuleles as much as using buckets or tubes to create sounds and rhythms. Our dedicated PE teachers make physical education and swimming both fun and challenging. The skills taught are transferable and help your child develop their spatial awareness and improve their gross and fine motor skills. WORKING TOGETHER We know that you are the most important people in your child’s life and the greatest advocates on their learning journey. We understand the importance of healthy communication, and nurture close relationships with parents to enhance our students’ learning experience. A strong home school partnership provides children with the confidence to progress and succeed. We work closely with you, communicating regularly to ensure that your child is at the centre of our relationship. By using the SeeSaw programme in the classroom, you can connect with your child’s learning, they love to share what they have achieved! Through weekly updates our teachers provide an overview of the whole class activities. We regularly invite parents to school, both for more formal termly parent teacher conferences and for coffee mornings and workshops. OUR LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Our EYFS classes share several Reggio-inspired outdoor learning areas. Our favourite is The Atelier, a welcoming and inspiring space with a wide variety of materials for the children to use and explore. We are very grateful for the Singapore climate which enables us to use these areas as natural extensions to the classrooms. Doverians love to explore outside, the school garden is especially enjoyed by all. We enjoy expanding our range of activities so there is something that will fit everyone. Small class sizes allow our teachers to focus on each child, giving them a more personalised education and helping them through any academic or social challenges they may encounter. At Dover Court International School we are all learners. We are proud of our staff, and we provide them with both formal and informal learning opportunities, developing their expertise with some of the finest minds in education. This involves discussing the latest educational research, keeping up to date with professional trends, and discovering and suggesting new teaching approaches - all of which are then incorporated into teaching methods in our lessons. This approach means that your child’s teachers are always improving their skills and modelling a great mindset of lifelong learning.
