was blown away. I couldn’t stop

“I spent a lot of time after 

work practising and brainstorming 

ideas, and now that I 

am through to the grand final 

I will be focusing on the finer 

details and getting my display 

really polished.”

of his apprenticeship at Peter 

Timbs and said the support 

of his mentor and boss, David 

Timbs, was a driving force 

behind his success.

PLANS TO regenerate Bishopdale 

Village Mall may have come too 

late for sports shop owner Tony 

Ralfe. 

The city council has agreed 

on endorsing a plan to revitalise 

the ageing mall following a 

decline in tenancy due to nearby 

competition and an increase of 

non-commercial activity. 

The Bishopdale Sports World 

owner has been a long-time 

tenant at the mall and is disappointed 

to close his store after 

more than 34 years. 

“We’re just about to close as 

well, so we won’t be here for too 

much longer, we just haven’t been 

able to sell the shop,” said Ralfe. 

“It’s disappointing and is a 

sign of the current times. We’ve 

actually had more inquiries since 

Covid-19 happened, but if we 

were more successful then we 

might have stayed open.” 

Closing up shop was not a direct 

result of Covid-19, he said, and although 

the pandemic exacerbated 

decreased demand, a decline in 

business over the years pushed the 

struggles over the edge.

Bus lane works now complete 

WORK TO improve bus journey 

times along busy Main North Rd 

has now finished. 

Contractor City Care has been 

working since the beginning of 

the year to install a northbound 

bus lane on Main North Rd 

between Winston Ave and 

Sawyers Arms Rd. 

They had to temporarily 

halt work during the Covid-19 

lockdown which meant the 

project has taken longer than 

the six months originally 

envisaged. 

“The Covid-19 lockdown did 

unfortunately cause some delays 

but the contractors have now 

largely completed the work,’’ said 

city council transport planning 

and delivery manager Lynette 

Ellis. 

“They have installed the 

northbound bus lane, put in new 

traffic lights at the intersection of 

Main North Rd and Grassmere 

St, and made layout changes to 

the entrance of the Northlands 

Shopping Centre. 

“These changes should improve 

the safety and efficiency 

of the transport network and 

make it easier for buses to travel 

up and down Main North Rd,’’ 

said Ellis.

NO-STOPPING 

No-stopping restrictions have 

been approved on the south 

side of Prestons Rd, between 

the Hills Rd and Marshland 

Rd intersections. The approval 

follows requests from the 

community to review safety 

issues as pedestrians had to 

traverse between parked cars 

while walking in the area due to 

their proximity to the footpath. 

WASTEWATER RENEWALS 

Construction has now started on 

Onslow St to replace wastewater 

pipes, which are part of the St 

Albans Wastewater Renewal 

Project. They are being replaced 

because the existing wastewater 

pipes have reached the end of 

their service life. Vehicle access 

to properties may be restricted. 

The works are expected to be 

completed by mid-October.

stop facilities at 60 Shirley Rd, 

adjacent to Shirley Intermediate 

School has now started. Works 

include footpath replacement,

an Auto Heavy Engineering apprenticeship. After several years in 

this role, Dan moved up through the ranks and took on various 

mentoring, training and logistics management roles. 

Dan believes that every New Zealander deserves the

The competition saw the 

upper South-Island’s top 

butchers put their boning, 

trimming, slicing and 

dicing skills to the test by 

breaking down a size 20 

chicken, a whole pork leg 

and a beef short loin into 

a display of value-added 

products at speed. 

Wright will now be gunning 

for first place at the 

grand final in Auckland 

in November where they 

will further showcase their 

cutting skills, creativity 

and knowledge of the trade 

against the best in the 

country. 

The competition helps to 

raise the butchering standards 

in the country. 

“I’m feeling super excited 

and keen to showcase my 

skills to the rest of New 

Zealand,” he said. 

The 18-year-old is a keen 

hunter and the hobby helps 

him have a better understanding 

of each animal, 

which was a motivator 

behind his decision to enter 

the industry.

inequality and a new class of working poor finding it hard to make ends meet 

let alone owning a home, the deterioration of public services, and a lack of 

investment in infrastructure to keep pace with unfettered population growth. 

•I was also appalled by National’s obsession with a low wage workforce 

instead of training young people - putting profit before people and the 

environment, their lack of compassion towards the elderly and other vulnerable 

groups, and their relentless sales of land, state houses, and primary businesses 

to foreign interests. 

My Priorities: 

•A more egalitarian, inclusive and just society in which everyone can provide 

for their families with well-paying jobs and affordable housing without being 

burdened with a lifetime of debt. 

•Environmental, economic and sovereign rights vigorously protected. 

•New Zealand as a responsible Pacific leader and protector. 

•Accessible and high quality health care. 

•Future generations able receive education and training well matched to their potential. 

•More government investment in infrastructure needs, research and 

development, and job rich sustainable industries. 

•Implementing the Provincial Growth Fund to boost regional economies. 

•Strong border security with all returnees paying their fair share. 

•An immigration policy strictly targeted to genuine labour and skills shortages. 

•Always looking after the elderly and all vulnerable groups.

talk and we need more retail 

people. There was meant to be 

a health hub which was due to 

open this year, but that’s been 

changed to 2021 now,” he said. 

“I don’t know how that will go 

but that will certainly help bring 

more people to the mall.” 

Businesses at the mall are 

calling for more retail stores, the 

realisation of a health hub, and 

more community-led projects 

as possible options towards its 

regeneration. 

A complicated ownership and 

holding structure of land in 

and around the mall deterred 

redevelopment and normal 

commercial revitalisation from 

occurring. 

The city council and the 

Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood 

Community Board will now 

work with anchor tenants on 

small-scale revitalisation and to 

develop an investment case to see 

what more can be done, and at 

what cost.

“Things that bring people together, 

such as families or retired 

people to gather would be really

“I think it’s going to be a destination

Guided walks 

to resume at 

Botanic Gardens 

THIS WEEK will see the 

resumption of guided walks 

by the Friends of the Botanic 

Gardens guiding team, but with a 

difference. 

Pre-lockdown, the guides 

offered daily walks from the 

museum from September to 

April, with the great majority of 

customers being overseas tourists. 

The landscape has changed and 

the guiding programme has had 

to change with it. From October 

to December this year, the guides 

will be offering a selection of daily 

45min walks in different parts of 

the gardens. 

The guides love to share the 

stories of the unique Botanic 

Garden, stories of its history, of 

its place in the history, and stories 

of trees and plants, such as the 

iconic Kauri tree which belongs 

to an ancient group of trees from 

the times of the dinosaurs. 

A relative of the kauri was 

discovered as recently as 1994 in 

the Blue Mountain region of New 

South Wales – six specimens of 

this tree are now planted along 

the drive near the visitors’ centre. 

Walks will be free until the end 

of this year, and a small charge 

may be incurred into 2021 to 

support the work of the Botanic 

Gardens.

understanding, and connection. The

How Long Does it Take to Sell a Home? 

“I generally like to advise sellers to think about a twelve 

week process from start to finish” 

Lead in: 

Factor in some lead-in time including interviewing agents, 

completing paperwork, finding your EQC documents, 

preparing your home for photos, and the upcoming building 

report (i.e finishing any maintenance jobs on the list). This 

can be approximately one to four weeks of preparation 

depending on how organised you are and how ready your 

home can be. 

Campaign time: 

Consider two to three weeks for a deadline sale campaign, 

with another two to three weeks on average for the due 

diligence to be included. If you decide to do an Auction 

then it is a three and a half to four week process with the 

difference being your outcome is an unconditional sale 

without any due diligence to factor in. 

Settlement (key handover date): 

This, on average, can be two to six weeks from the date of 

confirmation (unconditional). 

Altogether, I generally advise sellers to factor in a twelve 

week process from start to finish. 

To give you some perspective on this, there are 16 weeks 

between the 1st of September and Christmas day so if you 

launch to market in the very first week of September you 

would on average be moving at the end of November all 

going to plan. 

I have sold properties right up to the last official working 

day of the year which is no problem but if in the back of 

your mind a pre-Christmas sale is the plan then please get 

in contact so we can start preparing now. A well planned 

sale ahead of time definitely can take some of the stress out 

of the process!
