36 VALVESDoubling upGEMÜ is supporting the development ofa new system, which will doubleexisting ventilation capacities byenabling two patients to use the sameventilator, with a pragmatic solution.The Institute for Manufacturing ofCambridge (IfM), which is part of theUniversity of Cambridge's Department ofEngineering, and the Royal PapworthHospital in Cambridge are collaborating todevelop a method for splitting a ventilator'sair flow so that two COVID-19 patients canbe treated simultaneously with one ventilator.Such a device would make it possible todouble the capacities for the safe ventilationof patients for short periods.One requirement imposed by medicalprofessionals was that it had to be possible toindividually measure and control the air flowto each patient. This was intended to ensurethat a deterioration or improvement in thebreathing of one patient would not affect theair supply or monitoring of the other patient.In order to accomplish this, the IfM hasdeveloped a read-out meter, which makes itpossible to measure the tidal volume for eachpatient in real time and monitor both theoverall pressure and the air flow on thedevice. The individual fine adjustment of theair flow for each patient requires valves thatcan ensure the air/oxygen mixture isprecisely metered and are also easilyaccessible.In order to find a solution for these twochallenges, the scientists collaborated withspecialists from valve manufacturer GEMÜ.These specialists calculated the optimum flowrates for the air/oxygen mixture andrecommended that the GEMÜ C67 valves inthe nominal size DN8 be used, as thesevalves allow for a high air flow andsimultaneously provide good manualcontrollability thanks to their low flowresistance. The design of the GEMÜ valvesalso plays an important role, as thehandwheels are the only parts of the newlydeveloped device located outside thehousing, allowing doctors to individuallyadjust the air flow for each patient.Tests of the "splitter" with artificial lungshave so far yielded very promising results, sothat the first details about the apparatus,which was developed as a portable device,are now freely available on the IfM website.The website will be updated with thecomplete details of the design and testingonce the device has been approved for use.This will make it possible to have the"splitter" copied across the world so that itcan be used as needed, particularly incountries which, for a variety of reasons, donot have enough ventilators, to doubleventilation capacities for short periods."We are very proud to have been involvedin this project.
