THE FERRYMEAD Lions Club
had its biggest garage sale yet,
raising more than $2500 on
Saturday.
More than 600 of the 1000
items ranging from kitchenware,
exercise bikes to old music records
were sold, said club president
Bernie Godden.
The amount raised was nearly
three times more than at the
inaugural sale two years ago at
the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club. The
garage sale, this year, was held at
Ferrymead Heritage Park.
Godden said that the change in
venue was due to a lack of storage
and also the current venue was
more convenient as it is the home
of the club.
Most of the items sold were
priced under $50. However, an
antique table lamp sold for $100,
while a large cupboard-sized iron
gate and an original record turntable,
sold for $50 each, among a
few other collections.
Said Godden: “About 100 people
came in and bought something,
spending $20 on an average.”
Wastewater discharge views to be discussed
OPTIONS ON how Akaroa’s
wastewater should be discharged
are being discussed next week.
The Akaroa treated wastewater
options hearings panel will start
hearing oral submissions on
Monday.
The city council sought submissions
on the project over four
weeks in July and August.
Four options for dealing with
highly treated wastewater from
Akaroa were presented for
feedback –
three where
the treated
wastewater
would be used
to irrigate
new areas of
native trees
Sara
Templeton
and one where
it would be
piped out
into the midharbour
through a new outfall.
At the close of consultation
341 submissions had been
received from individuals,
organisations and businesses,
with 83 asking to speak at the
hearings.
The hearings panel comprises
six elected members – city
councillors Pauline Cotter,
Aaron Keown, Mike Davidson,
and Sara Templeton, and Banks
Peninsula Community Board
CONSULTATION: Options on how Akaroa’s wastewater should be discharged are being
discussed from Monday.
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
members Nigel Harrison and
Tori Peden.
Hearings will be held in
Akaroa and Christchurch and
are open to the public.
Submitters were asked five
questions. The two most pertinent
were whether they favoured
highly treated wastewater
being discharged to land or to
the harbour, and then, if the
mayor and councillors decide it
should go to land, which of three
locations would the submitter
prefer – inner bays (Robinsons
Bay, Takamātua and Hammond
Point), Goughs Bay, or Pompeys
Pillar.
A harbour discharge was supported
by 179 submitters and
discharge to land was supported
by 107 submitters. Another 55
submitters did not indicate a
preference.
Submissions supporting a
new harbour outfall included
comments on themes relating
to: leaking and damaged pipes
needing to be fixed first, the
harbour being the only safe
and feasible option, extending
the outfall beyond the heads,
treating the wastewater to an
even higher level and a harbour
outfall representing best value
for ratepayers.
Submissions supporting land
disposal included comments on
themes relating to the importance
of protecting the harbour,
biodiversity, community education,
climate change.
Submitters were asked to give
their first, second and third
preference for the land-based
locations.
The inner bays option was
the most preferred, with 92
submitters ranking it their first
choice.
Forty-six submitters ranked
Goughs Bay as first choice and
29 submitters preferred Pompeys
Pillar. Many submitters (166) did
not indicate a location preference.
Cty council staff will
recommend that highly treated
wastewater should be discharged
to land, with the preferred
location being the inner bays.
Staff also sought feedback
from submitters on the use of
highly treated wastewater in its
parks. This was supported by 247
submitters, was not supported
by 46, with the remaining 48 not
stating a view.
Submitters were also asked
if they would support further
exploration of a purple pipe
scheme, to allow highly treated
wastewater to be used for garden
watering and other non-drinking
purposes.
There was strong support
for this, with 253 submitters
in favour, 45 not in favour and
the remaining 43 not stating a
view.
The Christchurch Foundation: An
A review into the
annual contribution
of up to $600,000
from ratepayers to
the Christchurch
Foundation is currently
under way. Some see
the funding as an
inappropriate use of
public money, others
see it as an investment
into the city’s future.
Louis Day finds out
more about the
foundation
CHRISTCHURCH Foundation
chief executive Amy Carter
describes the organisation’s
inception as “an earthquake
story.”
After millions of dollars were
sent to Christchurch from across
the globe in the aftermath of the
devastating earthquake sequence,
it became apparent there was a
need for a more “strategic approach
to philanthropy.”
A mayoral fund and Government
initiative were launched to
take on the outpouring of support,
but neither were developed
with a long-term view.
This led to the Canterbury
Earthquake Recovery Authority
investigating various charitable
models that could look to attract
and mediate philanthropic donations
to Christchurch centred
causes.
It eventually left the responsibility
to set up such an entity
with the city council. In 2016,
the city council approved the establishment
of the Christchurch
Foundation and the following
year it became a registered charity,
intended to act as a vehicle for
philanthropy into the city.
The city council agreed to
contribute up to $600,000 a year
towards the foundation for six
years, subject to a review which
is now being conducted by an
independent supplier. The review
will give the city council the ability
to terminate, alter or continue
with the current agreement.
Councillors are expected to make
a decision before Christmas.
Readers of The Star have expressed
their concern with
the city council’s contribution
to the foundation, seeing it as an
inappropriate use of ratepayer
money.
However, Mayor Lianne
FUTURE
FOCUS:
Christchurch
Foundation
chief executive
Amy Carter
believes the
contribution
from ratepayers
into the
foundation
is a smart
investment into
the future of
the city.
PHOTO:
GEOFF SLOAN
Dalziel, who is also a member of
the foundation’s board, believed
ratepayers should be “incredibly
proud” of the contribution they
have made to the foundation.
“People can look at dollar
and cents and say that is a lot of
money if they don’t know what
the return is, but the return will
keep coming for many generations,”
she said.
Carter also believed the contribution
from ratepayers was a
“smart investment in the future
of Christchurch.”
She thought the contributions
of ratepayers would play a big
role in helping to fulfil the foundation’s
ambitions to support
local causes for at least a century.
The foundation is working
towards being fully financially
independent from the city council
by 2023 and has suggested a
gradual reduction in operational
funding from the council until
then, Carter said.
She said Christchurch’s
response to the March 15 terror
attacks really put the city on the
map and had launched the foundation
10 years ahead of schedule
in terms of building connections
across the globe, assisting in its
endeavour for financial independence
from the city council.
Last year, the foundation held
an event in London marking the
launch of its United Kingdom
branch, it is currently working
through setting one up in the
United States. It is hoped these
branches will attract further
donations from overseas.
“We hosted an event up there
[London], beginning to build
our database of ex-pats. But we
also spoke with people like The
Rockefeller Foundation, we met
with the Premier League and the
Cricket League looking for opportunities
for collaboration and
March 15 opened those doors for
us,” she said.
salaries of staff.
in the commercial world or in fact to be paid out. The money was Bailey after being crowned WWW.FLOORINGXTRA.CO.NZ
as one of the recipients of the
2020 Women’s Fund.
While Carter was unwilling to
disclose her current salary, the
most recent annual report from
the foundation shows that she
was paid $214,078 during the
2018/2019 financial year.
However, her salary will
become public when the foundation’s
annual report for the previous
financial year is released in
the next few months.
Strategic Pay chief executive
John McGill said the salaries of
charity chief executives across the
country can range widely from
well below to well above $100,000
a year.
Carter said she had since
taken a voluntary reduction
to her salary which was now
“significantly less” than the figure
recorded within the foundation’s
most recent annual report.
working for one of the big charities
in a senior leadership role.
“I don’t want to sound tripe
because I know I am incredibly
honoured. But not everyone
could do this job.
“I have a unique set of skill
sets and while I am certainly
not irreplaceable by any way of
means you need someone pretty
senior with some good runs on
the board to negotiate deals with
some of New Zealand’s biggest
entities and to hold their own in
conversation with global foundations
and various sophisticated
donors.
“It is not a $50,000 a year job,
that is just the reality.”
The foundation also took a 10
per cent reduction in the donation
it receives from the council
this year in response to the
generated from donations made
by TSB, Southbase and Spark.
The foundation also received
18,000 different donations within
the first 24 hours of the devastating
March 15 terror attacks
taking place. Overall, more than
$12 million has been raised in
response to the shootings so far.
More than $9 million has been
distributed in total with $3,570,000
being given to the next of kin of
victims, $1 million to the bullet injured,
$1.2 million to children and
widows of victims, $415,000 dished
out from the medical support
fund, $470,000 handed out from
the community support fund and
an additional $615,000 has been
administered to those financially
burdened by the attacks through
the hardship fund.
SUPPORT: The Christchurch Foundation has pledged
$2.75 million towards the operational costs of Turanga
‘We planted 3000 trees’
•From page 5
An education fund has also
been set up, a long-term legacy
which will support 108 children
with tertiary education and training.
Al Noor Mosque Imam Gamal
Fouda said the foundation had
played a “crucial” role in helping
the Muslim community recover
from last year’s attacks.
Former city councillor Raf
Manji played a leading role in
the foundation’s response to
the attacks, spearheading its
engagement with the Muslim
community over a three month
period which shaped its distribution
model.
More recently, the foundation
has worked alongside Meridian
energy in moving towards creating
a tui corridor throughout
Christchurch.
A corridor of tui tucker plants,
a tui favourite, will be planted
across Christchurch to encourage
the bird back into the city.
Carter said Meridian Energy
came to the foundation wanting
to contribute to the environmental
aspect of the city, so she came
up with the idea of a tui corridor.
“That was my idea, I pitched it
to
them [Meridian], they went yeah,
we would love to do it so we
planted 3000 trees on city council
MILLERS
GRAND
TREE-MENDOUS: In collaboration with the Christchurch
Foundation and Sustainable Coastlines, Meridian Energy
hosted its first planting day last week at the Christchurch
Adventure Park as it looks to create a Tui corridor through
the city.
land on Friday [last week].”
This is an example of the
foundation’s “project funding”
approach.
The second approach it employs
in facilitating acts of philanthropy
in the city is a strategy Carter
labelled as “pass-through giving.”
“Like the gift to Turanga, we
bring the money in and pass it
straight on to the beneficiary of
the donor’s choice. We have also
done that for other things in the
city like SCAPE [public art] and
the Christchurch Symphony
Orchestra.”
The third approach is endowment
funding. This involves
donors giving capital to the
charity which it then invests and
distributes the profits of to the
donor’s cause of choice.
This multi-faceted approach
from the charity has caught the
eye of Susan Dolton, who will be
studying the charity as part of
a Winston Churchill Memorial
Trust Fellowship grant into the
research of strategies in disaster
grant-making.
Open day at tennis club
THE REDCLIFFS Tennis
Club will hold its annual
open day on Saturday between
1-4pm.
The event will be postponed
• From page 1
He said it took more than a
dozen members and a week to
unload and display the items
which were donations from the
club members and the general
public.
The proceeds of the sale would
to Sunday if the weather is not
suitable.
There will be several
giveaways, prizes, and lolly
scrambles.
VALUE: Some of the items at the Lions club fundraiser.
Items donated from public
go to Christchurch Diabetes,
one of the causes supported by
the Lions Club International
Foundation.
“The unsold items would
most probably be used for next
year’s sale, hopefully,” Godden
said.
Positive music album proving popular
• By Bea Gooding
MICHAL BUSH has always had
a passion for connecting with
children through the world of
music.
The mother of three has now
become a hit on YouTube, with
her song Kindness is Free, stacking
up more
than 40,000
views.
The positive
song, which
came out in
2019, helped
Michal Bush
her and other
parents talk to
their children about the March
15 mosque attacks and the importance
of kindness.
To help families take a break
from the “overwhelming”
anxieties of the world during
Covid-19, Bush created Can You
Make Music? – a new, 15-track
children’s music album with an
overarching theme of well-being.
Bush said the album was
recorded during the lockdown
and took three to four months
to complete, with the help of a
funding grant from Creative
New Zealand.
“Music is an incredible tool for
heavy issues. I think the world
is so overwhelming, and as a
parent and teacher, it’s a heavy
responsibility to take the anxiety
out of the world to protect your
kids,” she said.
“So this is using music in a
positive way to help children focus
on the goodness in the world,
and as parents, it helps you to
take a deep breath, have fun, and
see that life is beautiful.”
Bush has always loved music
and has been songwriting since
she was a child. She started
focusing on children’s music for
the last eight years following the
birth of her daughter.
Ever since, she has performed
in numerous early childhood
centres, pre-schools, trusts and
online to develop children’s interest
in singing and rhythm with
her Music with Michal Club.
“It’s [music] so much a part
of who I am, how I process the
world, how I get my thoughts out
and how I connect with other
people,” she said.
“I’m so drawn to children’s
music because I love the wonder
and awe of it, it’s the best job
ever. Children are such a wonderful
audience, they come with
so much joy.”
Her songs have been used as a
resource by teachers and parents
across the country. Her children
were a “big” part of the process
having heard the album through
its different stages of completion
and also sang in a few songs.
Said Bush: “Thanks to the
grant from Creative NZ, I was
able to hire my friends who are
amazing producers to help produce
the album, which we made
from our own homes. It was a
very cool process.
“The album brings joy and
connection between parent
and child, which celebrates
the childlike point of view of
the world, sparks creativity in
children and helps parents feel
like kids again.”
• From page 1
Davids said she was approached
to feature on the show by
producers after the charity was
picked as one of the recipients of
the show’s proceeds.
Davids said the producers
looked through her social media
and thought she would be
“entertaining.”
She said she was hoping to
raise awareness about Keep New
in the show.
“For me, it is getting that
exposure for the organisation.
“We are obviously a well-known
charity in New Zealand but it is
always about keeping the charity
current.
“The real goal is really about
getting more people involved in
cleaning up New Zealand.”
Davids is no stranger to the
camera. She drew public attention
in 2013 when several “glamour
shots” of the at the time 27-yearold
appeared across mainstream
media.
This coincided with several
of her election billboards being
stolen throughout her campaign.
Something which she said at the
time left her “a bit freaked out.”
All Our Shimmering Skies
by Trent Dalton
The international bestselling author of Boy Swallows Universe, Trent Dalton
returns with a glorious novel destined to become another Australian
classic. Darwin, 1942, and as Japanese bombs rain down,
motherless Molly Hook, the gravedigger’s daughter, is
looking to the skies and running for her life. Inside a
duffel bag she carries a stone heart, alongside a map to
lead her to Longcoat Bob, the deep-country sorcerer who
she believes put a curse on her family. By her side are
the most unlikely travelling companions: Greta, a razortongued
actress, and Yukio, a fallen Japanese fighter pilot.
The treasure lies before them, but close behind them trails
the dark. And above them, always, are the shimmering skies.
A story about gifts that fall from the sky, curses we dig from the
earth and the secrets we bury inside ourselves, All Our Shimmering Skies is
an odyssey of true love and grave danger, of darkness and light, of bones and
blue skies. It is a love letter to Australia and an ode to the art of looking up - a
buoyant, beautiful and magical novel, abrim with warmth, wit and wonder.
Sisters of War
by Lana Kortchik
For fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz and The German Midwife comes this
unforgettable tale of love, loss, family, and the power of hope.
Kiev, 1941: Watching the Red Army withdraw from Ukraine in the face of
Hitler’s relentless advance, sisters Natasha and Lisa Smirnova realise their
lives are about to change forever.
As the German army occupies their beloved city, the sisters are tested
in ways they never thought possible. Lisa’s fiancé Alexei is taken by the
invading army, whilst Natasha falls in love with Mark – a Hungarian soldier,
enlisted against all his principles on the side of the Nazis.
But as Natasha and Lisa fight to protect the friends and family they hold
dear, they must face up to the dark horrors of war and the pain of betrayal.
Will they be strong enough to overcome the forces which threaten to tear
their family apart?
Planting trees helps transform hill
THE OWNER of a 4ha slice of
paradise overlooking the city has
been working to transform the
area into a valuable recreational
asset for the community.
In the past three years, Christoph
Schacherer has worked with
friends, neighbours, volunteers,
and the wider community to
plant more than 2000 native
trees, shrubs and flaxes.
Plant species such as tōtara,
mānuka, kānuka, and toetoe,
now span 1.2ha of his hill block
in Huntsbury Gully.
Schacherer has owned the
property for around 25 years and
three years ago received $10,000
of Immediate Steps biodiversity
funding.
“We’ve held planting days each
year and there’s always a really
good turnout,” he said.
“We’ve had families, friends
and neighbours all come along
with a packed lunch to sit and
enjoy the view of the city below
while they take a break.”
The area that has been planted
connects the Waterfall track that
runs through Huia Gilpin Reserve,
with Mt Vernon Park, on
the opposite side of the valley.
Schacherer’s neighbour, John
Howard, has been supportive
throughout the project and regularly
helps maintain the plantings,
which may provide habitat
for native bird species including
tūī and kererū, and habitat for
native lizards, once established.
The site previously had significant
gorse cover but weed
control work was carried out
before the planting, and ongoing
maintenance will help the plants
become established, providing
habitat for native bird species.
Much of the area was cleared
by hand and mulch was placed
around the base of each plant to
keep weeds and grass away, giving
the plants freedom to grow.
“Once the plantings have
PARADISE: New plantings
overlook the waterfall
gully, with Mt Vernon Park
opposite.
established the gorse will require
a lot less maintenance and the
hillside will become more stable,
which will help reduce erosion in
the area,” said Schacherer.
The lifestyle property is located
on land that is difficult to build
on or develop, making it the
ideal place for a native biodiversity
corridor to be developed.
The city council exchanged
a significant portion of land
around this area many years ago
for more suitable land further
down the valley that could be
built on.
“I wanted to keep the block
and develop it not with buildings,
but with nature. I hope to
covenant it in the future, protecting
it forever,” he said.
“I want to bring back the
connection between people and
nature and I want people to use
the track, have picnics, and bring
their kids along to enjoy the
environment.”
There is no such thing as waste
Dave Bryce of
the Redcliffs/
Te Rae Kura
Eco Village
group says
it is focusing
on waste and
pollution during October
IN NATURE, there’s no such
thing as “waste”, because
everything is a resource for some
organism, and everything is part
of a natural cycle.
These are ecological principles
which have applied and evolved
over billions of years.
What humans have been doing
over many years, however,
has created huge damage to our
planet, including depletion of
resources, destruction of natural
habitats and pollution of our
oceans, freshwater, air, land and
food.
Ecological principles suggest
we should instead be:
•Making fewer and durable
products – some cellphones are
being manufactured now, which
can be repaired by their owners
to replace screens, batteries and
cameras, thus extending their
useful life
•Avoiding creation of, and use
of, harmful substances – pesticide
use is being reduced significantly
by many farmers converting to
regenerative agriculture;
•Taking “whole of life
responsibility” (stewardship) of
products
•Ensuring product materials
can be and are recycled (circular
economy) Government has
recently introduced stewardship
requirements on some industries
•Purchasing and consuming no
more than we really need – thinking
about this will significantly
reduce living costs and waste
levels
•Repurposing products at the
end of their useful life – there are
many “community sheds” now,
where volunteers delight in these
activities;
•Recycling materials for new
products – all the 2021 Tokyo
Olympics medals will be made
from gold, silver and bronze, extracted
from six million discarded
cell phones
PROBLEM:
Refusing to
purchase
‘throwaway’
products
will help
reduce the
the amount
of waste that
ends up in
landfill.
•Refusing to purchase “throwaway’
products – one of the
biggest problems are takeaway
coffee cups, which can be avoided
by consumers carrying their own
reusable cups.
All we need to do is think of
things as resources instead of
waste.
What Christchurch can do to pull
through the effects of COVID
By Boyd Warren
The economic and social effects
of COVID-19 are unlike
anything we’ve seen.
While the immense public health
consequences seen worldwide
have not fully eventuated in
Aotearoa New Zealand, there’s
|no doubt about the massive
disruption inflicted on our
economy and our way of life
To be frank, our city’s economy is
expected to change significantly
as a result of COVID-19. That
change may be challenging but it
is necessary – and has been for
some time.
The post-quake boom disguised
the fact our local economy wasn’t
evolving as it needed to in the
long term. As the sustainable
economic development agency
for Ōtautahi Christchurch,
ChristchurchNZ is working to
foster that evolution.
Simply put, this initiative will
create valuable and sustainable
jobs for Christchurch.
Attracting businesses to
Christchurch is also a core
function of ChristchurchNZ
and clearly vital work towards
economic stability. Attracting
the right players will boost future
jobs numbers, as we’ve seen
recently with ANZ establishing
a large call centre here.
ChristchurchNZ has also worked
with city and iwi partners to
identify sectors of existing local
advantage with the potential for
global growth, called Supernodes.
These are aerospace and future
transport, health tech and
resilient communities, food,
fibre and agritech, and hi-tech
services, and represent a rich
seam of potential. We hope to
foster these areas, ultimately
creating and sustaining high
value jobs.
INNOVATION: We want our
work to create valuable jobs
for the city
We also know ChristchurchNZ
needs to support people who
have been impacted by COVID
into employment or tertiary
institutions to upskill. There are
approximately 9,000 more job
seekers (including COVID
income relief payment recipients)
in Canterbury than at the
beginning of the year, and this
will likely increase as wage
subsidies end. ChristchurchNZ
is working with Ngāi Tahu,
government agencies, education
providers, charitable trusts and
individual businesses to support
these people.
Yes, there’s a lot happening but
it’s important to point out the
post-COVID situation in
Canterbury is not all doom and
gloom. Our new Canterbury
Economic Activity Index shows
economic activity in August was
about 1.3 per cent higher than
the same time in 2019, compared
to a 0.1 per cent increase in New
Zealand as a whole.
This shows our economy is
recovering at an above average
rate, thanks in part to a 19 per
cent increase in local
manufacturing activity, and
retail spending of $674m in
August, 4 per cent higher than
the same time last year.
Despite the challenges faced
globally, Ōtautahi Christchurch
remains an attractive place to
work and do business. But as
with our earthquake recovery,
COVID recovery is not about
replacing what was lost but
reimagining our home to ensure
future prosperity.
Cantabrians know how to work
together to make things happen
and our job is to support that and
make it real.
Boyd Warren is the General
Manager for Innovation
and Business Growth at
ChristchurchNZ
We all know this city is wellversed
in emergency response
and disaster resilience. The
effects of COVID may be
unprecedented, but we also know
this city has a track record in
pulling through successfully.
In the immediate aftermath of
the pandemic outbreak, our
focus was on saving jobs and
businesses and encouraging local
spending to ensure cashflow.
ChristchurchNZ and its partners
have facilitated COVID-19-
related support services for
thousands of businesses who
sought it and continue to do so.
We launched a hugely significant
domestic tourism campaign and
have attracted a range of major
events to drive both local and
visitor spending.
Along with this immediate work,
we appreciate how vital it is to
create new jobs.
To serve this goal, in August we
invested into the creation of a
city-wide innovation ecosystem
with Ara Institute of Canterbury
and Ministry of Awesome
through the Te Ōhaka Centre for
Growth & Innovation and the
University of Canterbury
through ThincLab.
OPPORTUNITY: Despite our challenges, this city remains an attractive place to live in and to do business.

Discover our heritage
DIP INTO history and
find out more about a
range of cultures at the
upcoming Christchurch
Heritage Festival.
This year’s celebration
starts on October 24 with
more than 50 events and
activities that invite people
to explore Christchurch
and Banks Peninsula’s past
and gain a better understanding
of its present.
Open days, walking
tours, workshops, talks,
exhibitions and cultural
performances are some of
what’s on the programme
until the festival wraps up
on November 8.
The theme for the
Christchurch Heritage
Festival 2020 is Encounter
our Stories – arts, culture
and identity.
Christchurch City Council
head of urban design,
regeneration and heritage
Carolyn Ingles says several
events highlight the diverse
cultures that contribute to
the identity of the city and
Banks Peninsula.
The Polish Folk Day will
feature traditional music.
“The Super 15 kapahaka
competition for 2020 is
being held during the
festival and it’s an amazing
opportunity to enjoy
and share Māori culture at
the Isaac Theatre Royal on
November 6.
“There's also a Polish
folk day on November 7 at
Te Hapua: Halswell Centre
with performances of
traditional music and folk
dances.
“The screening of
Overcoming Fate on
November 3 tells the
story of orphaned Polish
children invited to come
to New Zealand in 1944.
They became known as
the Pahiatua Children,
and the Polish community
in Christchurch is part of
their legacy’’
One of the anniversaries
marked during the festival
is 150 years since the
opening of the Canterbury
Museum on Rolleston Ave.
An exhibition, House
of Treasures: Ngā Taonga
Tuku Iho, curated by the
Museum and featuring
iconic objects from
its collection, is tied to a
new book released for the
anniversary called House
of Treasures: 150 Objects
from Canterbury Museum
Ngā Taonga Tuku Iho.
The Air Force Museum
of New Zealand is showing
a new photographic
exhibition called Victory
commemorating 75 years
since the end of World
War 2 in Europe and the
Pacific.
The 25-year milestone
since the Christchurch
tram started running in
the central city will be
celebrated on Labour Day,
October 26, with adult
tickets discounted 25 per
cent (children will ride
free) and giveaways.
A Lyttelton Library
display called Sifting
the Ashes will run at the
library from October
20 to November 14, to
remember 150 years since
the Great Fire of Lyttelton
on October 24, 1870.
Tasty Bites
Delicious cafe fare at your own home
Crepes are a delicious
meal, needing only a
green salad to finish it
off
Crepe layer pie
6 servings
Ingredients
Crepes:
110gm (¾ cup) plain flour
pinch salt
2 eggs
200ml milk
75ml water
50gm butter
Place the flour and salt into a
mixing bowl. Add the milk and
the lightly beaten eggs. Mix well
with a hand whisk. Add the water
and beat until smooth.
Melt the butter in the pan that
you are intending to cook the
crepes in. Add to the batter and
mix through.
Return the crepe pan to the
stove and heat until it is quite hot.
There should be enough butter
left in it so that you don’t have to
grease the pan.
Tip a little of the batter into the
hot pan and swirl it around so
that the bottom is evenly covered.
Cook until the top is dry, then
turn over using a fish slice and
cook the other side before removing
to a large plate. Continue in
this way until all the batter has
been used.
The filling:
50gm butter
1 large onion
200gm mushrooms
10 asparagus spears
2 tbsp plain flour
½ cup milk
250gm tub cràeme fraiche
½ smoked chicken or 2
smoked chicken breasts
salt and pepper
A little Swiss cheese to grate
over the top.
Preheat your oven to 180 deg
C.
Melt the butter in a large frying
pan. Thinly slice the onion
and add it to the pan. Cook over
a medium heat until soft. Wipe,
trim and slice the mushrooms
and add to the pan. Cook, stirring
occasionally, for a couple of
minutes.
WHOLESOME:
Crepe pie layered
with chicken,
mushrooms and
asparagus can be
served as a full
meal.
Sprinkle over the flour and stir
in well. Cook for another minute
or two, then add the milk and
mix in well. Take care not to be
too vigorous or you will break up
the mushrooms.
Let this come to a gentle simmer,
stirring fairly constantly,
then add the cràeme fraiche and
stir thoroughly.
Bring to barely a simmer and
remove from the heat. Season
with salt and freshly ground
black pepper.
Bring a pot of water to the
boil and add the asparagus that
should be cut in 2cm lengths.
Let it come back to the boil and
simmer for a minute, then tip off
the water and re-fill the pot with
cold water to stop the asparagus
cooking further. Drain well and
add to the mushroom mixture.
Remove the skin from the
smoked chicken and roughly
chop the meat. Stir this into the
rest of the ingredients.
Directions
Line a 20cm spring form tin
with baking paper. Place one of
the crepes in the base of the pan
and top with a quarter of the
filling. Top with another crepe
and another quarter of the
filling.
Continue layering until you
have finished all the filling, then
top with a final crepe.
Sprinkle over a little grated
Swiss cheese.
Cover with tinfoil and bake for
30min, then remove the tin foil
and return to the oven for a further
10min.
Take the pan from the oven and
leave for at least 10min to firm up
a little. Remove from the tin, peel
off the baking paper and serve
warm cut into wedges.
Any leftovers will successfully
reheat in the microwave.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
New Yaris draws on links to Daihatsu
IT’S PROBABLY the Toyota Motor
Company’s best kept secret, it is the
sole owner of Daihatsu.
Daihatsu used to be well
represented in New Zealand, its
range of small cars were popular,
especially in times of fuel shortages
and high fuel prices, the threecylinder
engines that characterised
many of the models were
economical, honest and charming.
As recent history has served
to prove, Daihatsu is no longer
marketed new in New Zealand,
but you can guarantee the threecylinder
engine technology that
Daihatsu developed through the
years has been widely scrutinised
by Toyota when it developed the
fourth-generation Yaris.
Yes, the brand new Yaris is very
much a departure from the old
model. There are hybrid options,
and each of the four variants is
powered by a 1.5-litre three-pot
engine. Sure, most of Daihatsu’s
three-cylinder engines were just
999c, but I’m picking the basic
engine construction bears many
similarities to the faithful units
Daihatsu pumped out in the
hundreds of thousands.
Not only does the new Yaris
have rather special drivelines, it
also incorporates a tasteful, fresh
body style, it is curvy with just
the right amount of design flair. It
looks youthful and almost daring,
the test car was finished in a lime
green with black accents, it looked
terrific and gained favourable
comment during the time I had the
evaluation car in my care.
The newcomer starts at $25,990
for the non-hybrid GX, the subject
of this evaluation. I’m due to drive
the two ZR models soon, they list
at $29,990 (petrol) and $32,990
(petrol/electric). There’s also a GX
hybrid which lists at $27,990. These
are all prices which will bring cheer
to the fuel-conscious buyer, for not
only are you getting good value
but you will benefit from frugal
efficiency of small capacity engines.
Toyota claims a 4.9-litre per
100km combined cycle average
for the petrol-only Yaris, that
against 3.3l/100km for the hybrid.
Both are excellent figures and
are achievable, well at least in
the petrol-only model. The GX I
tested went back to the dealership
showing 5.6l/100km on the
readout, that was gleaned through
a long highway drive along the
Scenic Route/SH 72. At 100km/h
the engine ticks over slowly at just
2000rpm, returning an amazing
instantaneous figure of 3.8l/100km.
The engine is a feisty little unit
which delights with its harmonics.
TOYOTA YARIS GX: Cheeky styling and bright colours for
fourth-generation model.
Three-cylinder engines have a
specific tone, they all do it, and
that is something we’ll all need to
adjust to, engines of this type are
being churned out by a multitude
of manufacturers these days, and
they all have similar sound and
characteristics.
They also develop a lot of natural
torque, pulling from low in the
rev band and, when coupled to a
continuously variable automatic
transmission, there is a lot of natural
freedom, the two elements combine
to provide a seamless flow of power.
Toyota lists the newcomer with a
power figure of 88kW. If you add in
145Nm of torque from 4800rpm to
5200rpm, they are the ingredients
which make the three-potter so
special, it hauls solidly all through
the rev band, peaking at 6600rpm
and delighting as it revs through.
Acceleration is relatively smart
for its role with a 10.8sec standstill
to 100km time, while it will also
complete an overtaking manoeuvre
(80-120km/h) in 7sec.
I’ve made no secret over the
years of my enthusiasm for triple
engines, and the Yaris’ unit is one
of the best, it is a delight in terms
of honesty and its thrifty nature
speaks for itself. I was relatively
enthusiastic when I drove the
car, yet it still delivered good
economy.
The long, straight roads of
Canterbury don’t have many
corners, but I did deviate to a
road which has some tight bends
which always tax a chassis and
suspension. I found the Yaris
to have traditional handling
qualities; typically Toyota it has
solid steering feel and moderate
suspension settings which contain
well a tall body height (1.5m) from
gravitational movement.
Even though the rear suspension
• Fuel usage – 4.9l/100km
is a simplistic torsion beam type
and the tyres are on the small
size at 185/60 x 15in, there is an
encouraging amount of grip. Bear
in mind that in GX form the Yaris
gets steel wheels with plastic trim
covers. There’s nothing wrong
with that, when you are buying a
$25k you should expect just the
essentials.
In saying that, while the
interior trim has just the basics
the Yaris still gets a solid suite of
safety spec and nothing has been
compromised with that.
If you aren’t satisfied with the
GX level of trim, the extra $4k that
will get you in ZR spec adds more
of the niceties that today’s new car
buyer is often looking for.
If you look at the Yaris’ history it
goes way back past Toyota Echo to
Starlet. The latter served my wife
brilliantly for many years, it owes
its origins to Daihatsu, it came off
that company’s production line
and was testament to the quality
both organisations incorporate as
automobile manufacturers.
Two halves to this
unique business
and support businesses in your community
Located in London Street, Lyttelton,
Lyttelton Picture Framing & Air, Sea &
Land Gallery is really a business of two
halves, says owner Malcolm Carne, who
has owned and run the business for 22
years.
One side of it is bespoke picture
framing. Malcolm is a Guild
Commended Framer, a British
qualification in conservation framing
that he gained in 2001, which means he
is versed in all aspects of conservation
framing.
He stocks a wide range of moulding
samples to suit all types of artwork and
is pleased to guide customers on the best
type of frame for their artwork, whether
contemporary or traditional. All framing
is done on the premises, with most jobs
completed within two weeks, as long
as the moulding is available from the
manufacturer.
The other aspect to the business is the
gallery, which specialises in aviation,
motorsport and maritime images, both
old and modern, and with a special
emphasis on the Port of Lyttelton,
including oil paintings of the harbour
area by renowned local artist Malcolm
Mason.
Complimenting the artwork, Malcolm
has on display a large array of diecast
models of cars, brass nautical ware,
themed books, and more.
The range includes Canterbury’s largest
selection of Fischer barometers and other
weather instruments, which are imported
from Germany where they have been
hand-made in the company’s Saxony
factory since 1945.
You will find Lyttelton Picture
Framing & Air, Sea & Land Gallery at
32 London Street, Lyttelton. Opening
hours are Monday to Friday from 9am-
5pm and Saturday from 9am-1pm.
