I am wearing mynew frock that I wearon special occasions.This is bit short for meand I am pulling itdown to cover myknees. There is a policemanin our roomalong with a gentlelooking lady. They arevery kind to me. I amin my mom's arms.She is hugging andkissing me passionatelyas well as cryingbitterly. I am confusedlooking at thosestrangers and thestrange behavior of mymom, I have neverseen before. Then thatlady pulled me frommy mom's arms andpicked me up in herlap.…...Now I am in a policecar going awayfrom my mom. My littlemind is unable to understandwhy they aretaking me away frommy mom and wheream I going? It is swelteringlyhot day. Mylegs are burning due tohot iron seat. But I amdumb, unable to uttera word. That womanpicks me up and putsin her lap. I feel relieved.Then weboarded in a plane.Now everything lookslike small toys movingon earth.……I have reached ina big house surroundedby vast greenfields. But still confusedwhy I am here?Who chose this newlife for me and why?…..Any how I startedliving there, far awayfrom my mom, withanother mom. Herelived a man whom Icall papa and also twomore kids like me.When I used to livewith my mom, there Ihad no papa. I havenever seen a man evercoming to our house.My mom lived alone!"She jerked her headand wiped her mistyeyes. She looked ather beautiful houseand her own portraithanging on the wall. Itwas her graduationphoto with black gownand cap, when shehad been awardedwith degree of journalism.Now she is a famousjournalist. Shekept on staring at thisfor a while.……Yes! But it was nota plain sailing to be ajournalist. My fosterparents, I don't knowthey adopted me willinglyor the governmentmade themadopt me forcibly, theyleft the farm house andwent to live in a town.There were morewhite families livingaround us. We threewere different fromtheir kids. Our physiqueand black hairdoesn't resemble withtheir sleek bodies andgolden hair. They tookus as uncivilized andidiotic fools. In the sixtiesof twentieth centurythese whitepeople didn't hesitateto look at us with contemptand speak illwordsopenly. Theyfeel proud saying thatthey have accepted usin spite of beingaboriginals, eitherthrough words or withderogatory stares. Myinnocent mind understoodeverything butcouldn't react.And me! I remember, Itried my best to be likethem. I never did anythingthat made melook silly. Though Ivery well knew that Iam not one of them, Iam different fromthem. 'But who am I?To whom I reallybelong?'My heartaches to know aboutthis.Then I was in gradesix. In our history bookthere was a chapterabout natives of thiscountry. There I learntthat I belong to'Chipewyan' tribe. ButI couldn't pronouncethis word correctly. Awhite boy mocked atme, 'See! How Bettyblabbed her owntribe's name.' I felt extremelyembarrassedand ashamed. 'Whycouldn't I speak thisword correctly? This ismy real identity! Why?Why can't I? See thestrangers could!' I wastrembling with humiliationand helplessness."She touchedher forehead with hertrembling fingers as ifwiping that feeling ofembarrassment andshame. She movedfrom window and sat ina chair.
