‘The Crossing’ newspaper name originates from when Dalby was founded in the early 1840s at a place known locally as ‘The Crossing’ on Myall Creek
and is also on the junction of the Warrego, Moonie and Bunya Highways.
Cancer Council Queensland is passing the virtual baton to the Dalby community as the
town joins in on a statewide virtual event. Details inside.
Regional Australians impacted
by suicide are more likely to
experience multiple loses of
family, friends and community
members (67%) compared to
their city counterparts (60%) –
new research has revealed for the
first time.
It comes as the findings also show growing
concerns the economy, jobs (+7%), cost of
living (+4%) and drugs and alcohol use (+5%)
will increase suicide rates in the regions in the
wake of COVID19.
National peak body, Suicide Prevention
Australia, this week released the regionalspecific
results in the review to World Suicide
Prevention Day which was on September 10,
2020.
Suicide Prevention Australia is the national
peak body and that has been providing
support for Australia’s suicide prevention
sector for more than 25 years. They support
and advocate for their members to drive
continual improvement in suicide prevention
policy, programs and services.
Their reach is broad, including member
organisations, governments, businesses,
researchers, practitioners and those with
lived experience.
They are focused on an integrated approach
to suicide prevention encompassing mental
health, social, economic and community
factors and they believe that through
collaborative effort and shared purpose, we
can achieve their vision of a world without
suicide.
CEO Nieves Murray said over 4 million
regional Australians had been personally
impacted by suicide, with 66% of those living
outside city limits supporting the Federal
Government introducing a standalone
National Suicide Prevention Act that takes a
whole of government, not just mental health,
approach.
“I live in our regions and you only have to
look around and see that global disasters
like COVID19 hit our local economies,
communities and services harder and faster
than our capital cities,” Ms Murray said.
“The better we can proactively predict what
economic and social risks are facing our
regional and rural communities, the better
we can prepare Australians and prevent
suicide rates increasing.
INSPIRATIONAL SENIOR
SERGEANT LEADS THE PUSH FOR
WORDS FOR WELLBEING
A Queensland Senior Sergeant
who survived a shooting has
partnered with Western Downs
Libraries to launch a new series
promoting the importance of
mental and physical wellbeing for
Western Downs residents.
Senior Sergeant Daryl Elliott Green (pictured)
will launch Words for Wellbeing at a special
event to be held at the Dalby Leagues Club
on 14 October 2020.
Western Downs Regional Council
Spokesperson for Community and Cultural
Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said it
is an honour to welcome Daryl to the region
to discuss the importance of resilience and
looking after your physical and mental health.
"Daryl has an inspirational story of strength,
courage and resilience, and it's fantastic he is
making the journey to the Western Downs to
share his experiences," Cr Maguire said.
"The Queensland Police Service Valour
Awardee and Lifeline Ambassador was shot
in the face and the shoulder while on duty in
Brisbane in 2000.
"This incredible Queenslander is the perfect
fit to launch the new library collection Words
for Wellbeing, which is being rolled out across
all Western Downs Libraries and online.
"Words for Wellbeing is a collection of books,
audiobooks, DVDs and digital resources
which have been hand selected by health
care professionals.
"The series is aimed at supporting and
encouraging residents to look after their
health both inside and out and covers topics
that impact mental and physical health
and wellbeing such as anxiety, depression,
stress, relationship issues, diabetes, pain
management and much more.
“International evidence shows the best
way to achieve this is through a standalone
National Suicide Prevention Act that embeds
a whole of government, not just a mental
health, response.”
In some encouraging news, Ms Murray said
a third (30%) of regional Australians had
accessed a suicide prevention service – either
on their behalf or someone else – the same
rate as their city counterparts.
The regional results are from an exclusive
YouGov poll of over 1000 Australians
commissioned by Suicide Prevention
Australia as part of World Suicide Prevention
Day 2020.
“In shining a light on suicide prevention, it’s
important to not only help those in need, but
also support Australians to know what to say
beyond RUOK?” Ms Murray said.
Threats to Suicide: Regional (2020, increase
since 2019) vs City (2020, Increase since 2019):
1. Cost of Living/Personal Debt: Regional
(68%, +4%) vs City (61%, -1%)
2. Economy/Jobs: Regional (55%, +7%) vs City
(57%, +4%)
3. Drugs/Alcohol: Regional (72%, +5%) vs City
(64%, +0%)
"Our libraries feature a purpose-built set up
for people to access these resources which
includes a comfy chair, noise cancelling
headphones and DVD players.
"I encourage residents to head along to
the free launch to find out more about this
important set of resources, which contributes
to active, vibrant communities."
Words for Wellbeing is funded by the
Queensland Government's Tackling Regional
Adversity through Integrated Care Program.
The Words for Wellbeing launch is a COVID
safe event and early registration is strongly
encouraged so appropriate arrangements
can be made.
LNP PLAN
TO RESTORE
REGIONAL
MATERNITY
SERVICES
Member for Warrego Ann
Leahy has welcomed the LNPs
commitment to restore local
maternity services for Chinchilla if
elected on 31 October.
“There is no doubt Chinchilla Hospital being
on bypass has placed a lot of pressure on the
Dalby Maternity Services,” Ms Leahy said.
Last year it was revealed in Parliamentary
Estimates that the Dalby Hospital was close to
going on maternity bypass.
“As part of a major investment in better health
services across Queensland, the LNP will trial
on-demand birthing services with a new
dedicated local team.
“The LNP have restored birthing services to
Chinchilla before and we will do it again,” Ms
Leahy said.
Services at Chinchilla haven’t been offered to
local mums for more than two years after they
were closed down by the Palaszczuk Labor
Government.
“I was born in a regional hospital, Stanthorpe,
and I will fight tooth and nail for the families
on the Western Downs to birth in their own
community, be it Chinchilla or Dalby,” Ms
Leahy said.
“Providing birthing services closer to home
is not only good for local families but
encourages more people to live in rural and
regional Queensland.
“It also takes pressure off neighboring health
services,” Ms Leahy said.
“Mums in the bush deserve the same
healthcare as mums in Brisbane.
“The Palaszczuk Labor Government has a
record of shutting down maternity services
in the bush, since 2001, they have closed
maternity services in 26 rural and regional
communities.
“Labor chose to spend half a million dollars
of tax payers funds on changing the name
of the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital rather
than improving rural health services for
Queenslanders,” Ms Leahy said.
“The LNP is about refocusing our public health
system on patients and ensuring better health
services are provided to all Queenslanders.
AUSTRALIANS
URGED TO PREPARE
FOR SUMMER
DISASTER SEASON
Emergency
Management
Australia (EMA) has completed its
annual disaster season briefings
with states and territories and
has urged Australians to properly
prepare for the upcoming summer
disaster season, which officially
commences this month.
Minister for Emergency Management David
Littleproud said that local, state, territory and
federal agencies are well prepared to support
communities through natural disasters,
including from the initial response and relief
phase through to long-term recovery.
“Since the horrific bushfires last summer, the
Government has been working to bolster
Australia’s ability to respond to and recover
from crises including natural disasters and
the COVID-19 Pandemic,” Minister Littleproud
said.
“The next challenge is to make sure we are all
prepared for the disaster risks facing us over
the coming season.
“Significant grass and vegetation growth over
winter combined with higher than average
temperatures across the southern part of
Australia means we are looking at the very real
potential for a bad grass fire season.
“In the north, La Nina conditions risk bringing
a worse than average storm, cyclone and flood
season.”
Over the past two weeks, Emergency
Management Australia has been holding
operational briefings with police, fire
authorities and emergency service agencies
in every State and Territory to prepare for the
disaster season.
“The Australian Government works with
communities to prevent, prepare, respond
and recover from disasters – from disaster
mitigation initiatives, and community
awareness and warning measures, through to
disaster relief and recovery support,” Minister
Littleproud said.
“We have invested more than $2 billion to
help communities recover from last summer’s
bushfires and have already committed
significant funding to better prepare for the
future including in bushfire research, aerial
firefighting and telecommunications.
“We are investing more than $26 million
annually in the National Aerial Firefighting
Centre to improve Australia’s aerial firefighting
capability, and more than $37 million to
strengthen telecommunications resilience
in bushfire and disaster-prone areas so that
communities can stay connected during
emergencies.
“There’s also been an important step in
streamlining aid and support from the
Australian Defence Force ahead of the 2020
2021 summer season with the Department
of Defence and Home Affairs, through EMA,
undertaking a comprehensive review of the
Defence Assistance to the Civil Community
(DACC) arrangements.
“While we can work with authorities to
properly prepare, it’s also critical families,
households and individuals do what they can
to prepare themselves.
“By planning ahead, people can reduce the
risk of injury and damage to property.
“Information on how to prepare for disasters
is available through state and territory
authorities.”
The Royal Commission into Natural Disaster
Arrangements will deliver its Final Report
to government on 28 October 2020, which
we look forward to receiving and carefully
considering as part of our ongoing work to
ensure Australia’s natural disaster capabilities
are as effective as possible.
The Australian Government will invest
more than $9.3 million across 14 vital road
infrastructure projects in Maranoa under
Round 5 of the Bridges Renewal Program
(BRP) and Round 7 of the Heavy Vehicle
Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP),
Maranoa MP David Littleproud said this
week.
“This vital funding will allow communities
across Maranoa to fast-track their highestpriority
infrastructure projects, providing
a much-needed boost to local jobs and the
economy,” Mr Littleproud said.
“I am pleased to see 14 projects across
Maranoa will receive a total of $9,307,161 to
do exactly that at a time when it couldn’t be
needed more.
“The Bridges Renewal Program has already
delivered a number of stronger and safer
bridges for residents in Maranoa, and this
latest round will support five new projects
to upgrade and replace damaged or
deteriorating bridges.
“Round 7 of the HVSPP will support 9 heavy
vehicle infrastructure projects in Maranoa,
including upgrades to traffic movement and
accessibility at the Roma Saleyards, Blackall
Saleyards and the Western Queensland
Livestock Exchange in Longreach.
“Through the HVSPP, the Federal Government
will also invest $2.5 million into widening
the Barwon Highway between Talwood and
Nindigully, to improve heavy vehicle safety
and productivity.
“These projects are about getting drivers on
our roads home sooner and safer, and making
key freight routes more efficient, while also
boosting local jobs and getting cash flowing
in our regional towns.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for
Infrastructure, Transport and Regional
Development Michael McCormack said these
latest rounds would deliver more than $290
million to support 350 projects across the
nation.
“Now more than ever the continued roll out
of road infrastructure projects is important
to support local jobs, underpin economic
growth and ensure all Australians can
reach their destinations sooner and safer,
and communities can rest assured that’s
exactly what our Government is doing,” Mr
McCormack said.
Cancer Council Queensland is
passing the virtual baton to the
Dalby community as the town
joins in on a statewide virtual
event.
The statewide Relay will be the first in
Queensland’s Relay For Life 20-year history,
where the usual 18-hour event will be
shortened and the favourite traditions of
Relay will be streamed online on October 10,
from 3pm – 7pm.
After physical event cancellations due to
COVID-19, the local Dalby Relay For Life
committee have made the decision to
participate in the statewide event and
postpone the local physical event to 2021.
Cancer Council CEO Ms Chris McMillan said
while the local physical event has been
postponed, the statewide event will be an
unmissable experience.
“Relay For Life is organised by passionate,
local volunteers, and each Relay is a special
experience that will stay with you forever,” Ms
McMillan said.
“Although this years’ Relay will look very
different, it will still be all about bringing
Queenslanders together to celebrate,
remember, and fight back against cancer.
The statewide event, hosted in Cairns, will
include an opening and closing ceremony,
survivors and carers from across the state will
their own candle to take part at home.
“There will be several interactive moments
too, with entertainment, games, and activities
for all participants to get involved with and
bring the fun of Relay to Dalby.
“We know that dressing up and walking are
such fun and important parts of our physical
Relay events, so this year we are encouraging
the Dalby community to do just that.
“The theme of the statewide event is Great
Barrier Reef, and Relayers can dress up and
walk in the lead up to the virtual event to
help with their fundraising, whether that be
around their neighbourhood, or their living
room!
“Every dollar raised at Relay funds our work,
and in turn, provides vital support and care
for all Queenslanders every minute, every
hour, every day.
“Around 2,160 people are diagnosed with
cancer each year in South West Queensland
and Relay For Life enables us to support
those people.
“Cancer doesn’t stop, so neither do we.”
Registration for the Queensland Relay For
Life is free, however, to keep track of where
participants are Relaying from, Cancer
Council Queensland asks all participants to
YOUTH MONTH LAUNCHES INTO THE
WESTERN DOWNS THIS OCTOBER
Young people from across the Western Downs will have the opportunity
to let loose and have some fun this October, with Council hosting a
series of exciting Youth Month events in local towns.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and Cultural Development
Councillor Kaye Maguire said it was vital to celebrate the contributions of the region’s young
people, after a particularly tough year for all residents.
“The youth of our region play a very big part in our active vibrant communities so it’s great to
be able to celebrate them and offer the chance for everyone to come together and have some
fun,” Cr Maguire said.
“2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, including our youth and that’s why this October
we can’t wait to give them an excuse to let their hair down.
“We have something for everyone this year with some great activities planned. Activities will
include Archery Attack, mechanical bull rides, inflatable obstacle course and a jumping castle.
“We’re also really proud to be supporting local food and beverage vendors by providing the
opportunity to purchase a range of food and drinks and we encourage everyone to support
our small businesses at your local events”.
Youth Month activities across the region are free, however it is recommended that cash is
brought along on the day for food and beverage vendors.
Youth Month events across the Western Downs will be following COVID Safe plans and contact
tracing information will be collected upon arrival.
ZERO TOLERENCE
POLICY AND
HEFTY FINES FOR
VEGAN ACTIVISTS
AT PITTSWORTH
PIGGERY
Police are being urged to adopt a zero-tolerance
policy and hefty fines towards vegan activists who
protested outside the Pittsworth Piggery yesterday
leading to two arrests.
Katter’s Australian Party State candidate for Warrego, Rick Gurnett
(pictured below), said police should be congratulated for the calm and
professional matter in which they handled yesterday’s protest, but
any repeat protest should be met with zero tolerance and protestors
should also be billed for police time and resources.
“The protestors have made their point and police have better things
to do than waste hours upon hours with these repeat offenders,” Mr
Gurnett said.
“I support peaceful protests, but if they come back again, there should
be more arrests and fines handed out for wasting police resources.
”Unfortunately, I am sure they will be back because these people have
very little else to do.
Mr Gurnett said “the
same old faces” had
been to numerous
animal welfare
protests in the
Warrego electorate
and their activities are
threatening jobs.
“These activists will
not be happy until
they close down
facilities like piggeries
in Pittsworth and
cause people to lose
their jobs.
“Like the rest of
Queensland off the
back of COVID-19,
every job is important
in Warrego today.”
MILES WWII VETERAN ERIC GELDARD
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
RECOGNISED FOR HIS SERVICE
the Mediterranean and the Middle East, to
Asia and the Pacific, with the conflict also
reaching Australian shores.
“Australia can never fully repay the debt we
owe these amazing men and women but, to
mark their service, the federal government
has produced this Commemorative Medallion
and Certificate of Commemoration for the
remaining living Second World War veterans.”
Mr Gerard’s service started at the age of 18
when he enlisted in the RAAF then transferred
to A.I.F. and volunteered for Commando
as Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, carried him on a
makeshift stretcher down a very steep track
to comparative safety below.
That trek took five hours, and he was then
transported by Jeep, truck and launch to the
Casualty Clearing Station at Cape Wom.
By this time, he was unconscious from loss
of blood and was thus unable to thank his
rescuers.
He spent 15 months in hospital, before flying
back to Australia.
Mr Geldard also had his Commando service
training at Canungra.
recognised last year by the Australian
After their training, they were sent to serve
in New Guinea , and only a few weeks before
the war ended, Mr Geldard and his fellow
commandos were sent up to patrol the
highlands, and about 30 of them were sent to
Jokuku Pass.
At about 4pm on July 26, 1945, Mr Geldard
returned from patrol where, as per procedure,
he and his companions, including his good
Commando Association with the presentation
of a Quilt of Valour “to acknowledge your
valour, service and sacrifice for our country.
“Eric Geldard is one our few surviving World
War II commandos,” association member
Mark Stanieg said.
“I was privileged to be able to spend so much
time with Eric on his cattle property out near
Miles.”
mate Mike Heffernan, would clean and ream
their weapons and he was accidentally shot
with an Owen Mk1 (no safety catch).
Miles R.S.L. Sub-Branch, WWII
veteran Eric Geldard was recently
awarded the Commemorative
Medallion for his service to our
country.
Acknowledging the significance of the 75th
anniversary of the end of the Second World
War, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs
produced the Commemorative Medallion
and Certificate of Commemoration.
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester
said the medallion and certificate was
available to every living veteran of the
Second World War.
“As we approach this special anniversary,
we recognise that it will be one of the last
opportunities we have as a nation to publicly
acknowledge the remaining veterans of the
Second World War, of which there are around
12,000 still with us today,” Mr Chester said.
“These brave Australians served our nation
in the far corners of the world, fighting in
theatres of war from Europe to North Africa,
Bike riders inundated the Club
Hotel from across Queensland
on Sunday who were exhausted
after riding for almost 9 hours for
regional Queenslanders requiring
mental health support.
The 29 riders were all taking part in the
RideWest Charity Ride and were in their
second day of a 1237-kilometre cycle from
Brisbane to Longreach, raising funds for the
Wellbeing Out West program which is an
initiative of the Royal Flying Doctor Services
(Queensland Section).
2020 marked the 10 th anniversary of the
biennial event and the 6 th ride the team have
undertaken.
Almost $300,000 from this year's campaign
and more than $1 million in total have been
raised for the worthy cause.
Amongst the riders was ex-local Western
Downs man Andrew Barron who joined the
ride because he now works for the RFDS and
gets to see firsthand how the money is spent
and has an input into the structure of the
program they provide.
"I also am a country boy myself and grew up
on a pig farm near Dalby," he said.
"Travelling past Dalby on day two of the ride
and I was looking forward to having the local
cycle community come out to meet us and
ride with us on that stage."
Preparations for the weeklong ride is no easy
task with training taking place three months
in advance so the riders can increase their
fitness levels to a place where they can survive
180kms a day in sometimes harsh conditions.
A mid-week train ride and one ride each
weekend was on the cards for riders in the
months leading up to the cycle with some
doing extra training and riding up to 250km
a week to get themselves ready.
Rider Charles Burke who rode for the second
time, said even though each day brings its
challenges, to do with such a great group of
riders and for such a worthy cause makes it
all worth it.
"Each day has its challenge and the first day
was very hectic getting out of suburbia and
getting through Gatton and built-up areas
with lots of traffic and stoppages," he said.
"Climbing the range at Murphy's Creek was
very challenging but getting up there was a
lot easier than I did two years ago and was a
highlight for me.
"Another highlight was just getting through
each day and ticking off milestones and
personal bests.
"There were about eight people who rode
further than they ever have in one day.
"That was an additional highlight to be
around people that get swept along with the
momentum and enthusiasm.
"Plus when you see the result of the
fundraising that it goes into a particular
program for the Royal Flying Doctor's Service,
it's not delivered by any other forum or by
any other service provider for mental health
in the bush.
"You think very easy to raise money for
something so critical, and that's all the
motivation you need to help get you through."
It has been a mammoth effort with the prelogistics
planning and wouldn't be made
possible if there wasn't a support crew in
addition to the riders.
Wanting to get out the office for a week, sit in
a truck driver's seat and of course raise help
out and with no desire to do the ride, Dugald
Warby (pictured below) joined as a truck
driver for the event.
His job is vital to the event, loading the truck
with four pallets of ice, water, groceries and
sweets to make sure the riders are fed during
the week.
"We have breakfast and dinner at hotels or
motels, but all our lunches and snack stops
on the road are self-catered," he said.
"So, it involves a lot of logistics.
"First getting it all packed and ready to come
away and then second to get it sorted so
that you can provide the riders nourishment
quickly when you pull up."
Mr Warby also plays another vital role in
ensuring the safety of the riders by driving
directly in front of the riders and monitoring
the traffic.
He has to allow cars and trucks to get around
the riders, as well as block intersections off
and said that no riders are allowed in front of
him, and his truck and they do as he says.
"Day one is quite difficult because we are
coming from Amberly through Gatton,
Fernvale and Toowoomba up to Oakey," he
said.
"There is a lot of traffic and windy roads, so
it's stressful. But from Oakey to Chinchilla
and beyond gets more manageable because
there is less traffic.
"As you get further west, most trucks and cars
are on channel 40, so they can hear us talking,
and we can talk to them."
The ride continues till Friday, October 9 and
includes stops at Roma, Mitchell, Augathella
and Blackall, before the final destination
which is Longreach.
CHINCHILLA
FIELD
NATURALISTS
CLUB
In March 1967 a group of mostly
local farmers who were interested
in the natural environment began
to regularly meet and share their
knowledge and observations.
A charter was drawn up and aspirations include
-studying all branches of natural history;
encouraging a spirit of conservation;assist
with scientific research;document and
preserve information relevent to our area.
For over 50 years the club has furthered the
knowledge base and understanding of our
natural environment.We have a newsletter
“Urimbirra” which is published 6 times a year
and available to members. It contains reports
on meetings, field trips and observations, as
well as lists of flora and fauna recorded.
Meetings are held every 2 months at the
CWA building beside the RSL.Field trips are
monthly.
In 1988 the club printed it's first book – “Going
Bush with Chinchilla Nats – 20 years of Field
Observations”. It was updated in 1997.
Since 1988 the club has published or
supported a number of other books
including resources for identification of
Wattles, Mistletoes, Wildflowers and Orchids.
There is also a book of Botanical Illustrations
(essentially art works) by the late Sylvia Seiler.
The Clubs publications are keenly sought
after as reference books by organisations
interested in our local environment. The
knowledge stored within them is invaluable.
They are available at the Chinchilla Visitor
Information Centre or through the Club.
As I write, the Gurulmundi area of the forestry
is ablaze with wild flower. In Waaji section
of Barakula you can stand on the top of the
range and observe the beginning of 3 water
sheds. To the north is the start of the Dawson
River. To the east begins the Burnett River, and
to the south - the Condamine/Murray system.
There are Bora rings, native wells (water
storage created by the Aboriginal people),rock
art, and grooving from thousands of years of
tool sharpening in the rocks on undisturbed
water ways. All relics of possibly the oldest
culture on Earth. There is so much beauty
right on the doorstep of Chinchilla.
The Club would welcome those who would
like to learn more about our country.
GLENNIE MAKES A TRIP TO
CHINCHILLA TO SUPPORT
DROUGHT ANGELS
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Thanks to a special visit from the past, local charity Drought Angels
can continue to assist those farmers still struggling with the crippling
effects of the drought.
Mark Ryan, The Glennie School Parents and Friends’ Association President, and his family
ventured out to the Drought Angels headquarters in Chinchilla recently to present the Drought
Angels team with a $3,366 donation in support of their operations on behalf of the Association.
Co-founder of Drought Angels and former Glennie student Natasha Johnston, and her
husband, Steele, showed the Ryan family through their headquarters and outlined how the
process works – from receiving donations to dispatching food hampers and care packs.
Mr Ryan said that Drought Angels has considerable reach and impact and encourages anyone
who is visiting the region to drop into the gift shop.
“They offer financial assistance and personalised support to thousands of farming families
across Australia,” he said.
“The mechanics behind the gift shop are very impressive and worth a look if you are in the
area.”
A Glennie School spokeswoman said in a year where our resilience, resolve and compassion are
being tested; it’s heart-warming to see the tremendous community support that is enabling
organisations like Drought Angels to forge ahead with their outstanding work in the rural
sector.
“Drought Angels provides a unique service for which it has become well known within the
rural sector and among valued sponsors,” she said.
“While it is fantastic to give the necessary material items, the ability to reach out and listen to
those struggling is the most beneficial.
“Drought Angels donations are very much a ‘thank you’, rather than a handout.”
I FIGURED WE WERE
FRIENDS...
In a crowded city at a crowded bus stop,
a stunningly beautiful young woman was
waiting for the bus.
She was decked out in a tight black leather
mini skirt with matching leather boots and
jacket.
As the bus rolled up and it became her turn
to get on the bus, she became aware that
her skirt was too tight to allow her leg to
come up to the height of the bus’ first step.
So, slightly embarrassed and with a quick
smile to the bus driver, she reached behind
her and unzipped her skirt a little, thinking
that this would give her enough slack to
raise her leg.
Again she tried to make the step onto the
bus only to discover she still could not
make the step.
So, a little more embarrassed, she once
again reached behind her and unzipped
her skirt a little more. And for a second
time she attempted the step and once
again, much to her dismay, she could not
raise her leg because of the tight skirt.
So, with a coy little smile to the driver, she
again unzipped the offending skirt to give
a little more slack and again was unable to
make the step.
About this time the big Texan that was
behind her in the line picked her up easily
from the waist and placed her lightly on
the step of the bus.
The pretty young woman went ballistic and
turned on the would-be hero, screeching
at him, “How dare you touch my body! I
don’t even know who you are!!!”
At this the Texan drawled, “Well ma’am,
normally I would agree with you but after
you unzipped my fly three times, I kind of
figured that we were friends.”
BEER PIE A REAL WINNER
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
After not hearing anything back about her
application and finding out she needed to
ship the pie to Sydney as soon as possible for
judging, it was a mad rush for Fuzzy’s Bakery
owner and Pie Maker Lyn McCullough.
She franticly had to organise freight, put the pie in an esky
with ice bricks and expressed post it but all the last-minute
stress was worth it and turned out better than she could
have expected.
Not only did the pie arrive at the destination safely within
24 hours, but it also a bronze award in Australia’s Best Pie
Competition early last month.
“It was the first time I’ve put a pie in the competition,” she
said.
“I thought it’s been a pretty popular pie, so I will just put it in
and see how I go, and I was surprised.
“I was hoping I would win a certificate or award, but when
they sent the certificate to saw I got the bronze award, I was
pretty stoked.
“The sales have gone through the roof already, and everyone
knows about it.”
Usually held in Melbourne, this year’s event had to relocate
to Sydney due to the coronavirus.
Unfortunately, Mrs McCullough was too busy at the local
store to fly down, so her pie went, and she didn’t.
Among about 400 applicants across Australia, the awardwinning
Guiness Steak pie received bronze in Class 3
Flavoured Beef Pie category.
“It is a Guiness Steak Pie which is a chunky pie made with
Guiness beer, and it’s just got a few vegetables stewed with
it,” she said.
“It’s my recipe and is just a basic pie that I’ve tweaked by
adding this and adding that and it turned out very good.
“I only just started making it about nine months ago, and it’s
been quite popular.”
In business for nine years, the Chinchilla bakery has created
a name for itself and has seen people try from near and far
to get a taste.
In the past, it’s attracted many famous faces including Allan
Langer, Chris Close, Michael Usher and Andrew Simmons.
Then to top things off the award seems only to be making
things busier for the business.
“We’ve even had people take photos with the certificate on
the wall and stating they have been here,” Mrs McCullough
said.
The pie maker also explained that this wouldn’t be her
only year that she would be entering her creations into the
competition.
“We’ve got another pie there as well that I was going to put
it this year, but we didn’t get a chance to put that one in,”
she said.
“So next year I will put a couple of different flavours in.”
If you would like to get your hands on the award-winning
pie and taste it for yourself, it can be purchased from Fuzzy’s
WE CAN AND MUST DO BETTER
Before Queenslanders cast their vote in the upcoming state
election I hope they take the time to reflect seriously on how
Queensland has been travelling the past three years.
Covid 19 obviously has dominated the last 9 months and the
Premier continues to bask in supposed glory from how well
Labor has handled the virus in this state.
We are not a standout success in this case as the fact is every
state in Australia has done a stirling job and our leaders and
citizens are to be commended for their efforts.
The exception of course is Victoria which is a clear example
of shambolic incompetence.
Our thoughts go out to all Victorians and hopefully thing
there will soon improve.
How has the Government performed apart from Covid-19?
At the start of 2020 we had record unemployment coupled
with record budget deficits.
Energy policy was non-existent with large projects buried in
the mire of government indecision e.g. Adani or New Hope
Coal.
This stems from not knowing which voters to appease, the
unions who want the resource jobs or the inner city greens
whose support is just as crucial.
Bill Shorten dithered over the same issues and we saw the
result.
Youth crime is at record levels and shows every sign of
worsening rapidly.
No progress has been made in this area for many years and
some neighbourhoods are almost no-go areas.
There has even been talk of vigilante justice in some towns
e.g. Townsville and Chinchilla.
This is Australia, not a third world republic.
We have a police force, a Court system and intervention
programs. Why are they so ineffective and why can’t we get
better results?
Rural voters remain disaffected for the usual reasons, the
scaling back of services, the near total absence of drought
programs and the on-going unfairness of tree clearing
laws, which coupled with the uncertainty Government has
instilled in the resource industry has led to a collapse in
employment.
Many regional towns at the start of this year were facing
disaster with the total loss of their water supply due to
drought e.g. Stanthorpe and Warwick.
What has been done this year to build pipelines or investigate
new storages or increase the capacity of existing storages?
A comprehensive water policy to cope with increasing
population and dry weather conditions seems to be nonexistent.
Why is public housing construction at such low levels?
While the Government keeps chanting jobs, jobs, jobs and
housing, we are seeing unprecedented numbers of people
approaching charities for help with housing while public
housing stocks are allowed to dwindle.
Retail businesses have been smashed by Covid–19 but the
fact is they were doing it hard long before the virus arrived.
We were headed for recession as early as 2019 in my opinion.
This is why I urge people to not just robotically vote along
the usual lines, but take a careful look at the last three years
and consider whether we can do better.
These are just a small sample of issues where I believe we
can and must do better.
NEW EXHIBITION
DISPLAYS THE FUN
WITH ART
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Every Friday morning after a cuppa and chat,
members of the Chinchilla Potters and Painters
club have been working hard, creating their
individual art and pottery masterpieces.
The group which has been a mainstay of art in Chinchilla for
over two decades are now showcasing their projects at their
biennial exhibition at the Lapunyah Art Gallery Chinchilla.
The exhibition is titled ‘Having ‘Fun With Art’, which president of
the club Val Sims said is the main rule of membership.
“When things go wrong, as they often do, we remind ourselves
of this rule,” she said.
“If our colours won’t mix, the paint has dried up in the tube,
the pot falls apart in your hands or explodes in the kiln, the
rule: “Have fun” reminds us not to take our art, or ourselves, too
seriously.
“With a little laugh, we relax and continue to create, and maybe,
make something we are proud of!”
The works in this exhibition were created by members who are
painters, drawers and/or potters and since their last exhibition,
in 2018, they have welcomed several people new to drawing
and pottery.
“We hope you enjoy the variation and the freshness that these
newcomers bring to the group,” Ms Sims said.
“You may also notice the skill progression in the works of our
new pottery members?”
The exhibition which was officially installed last Friday will be
held from Saturday, October 3, to Wednesday, November 11
giving local plenty of time to admire the local club's art.
“I just wanted to say a big thank you to all the potters and
painters who came to help,” Ms Sims said.
“We all learnt a lot in the process!
“It was a privilege to install it ourselves.
“We were delighted how it all came together.
“We are thrilled to be able to share our artworks with you and
hope that you will have fun viewing our art!”
SERIOUSLY INJURED DRIVER
AIRLIFTED AFTER ROLLOVER
The Toowoomba-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue
helicopter has airlifted a man to hospital, after
he was seriously injured in a truck rollover, in
the Western Downs on Saturday October3 rd .
The rescue helicopter flew to the scene, south east of Chinchilla,
shortly after 8:20am.
The pilot was able to land the chopper on a closed stretch of
road, near the accident.
It's believed the patient, aged in his 40s, had been driving the
truck, when he lost control on a bend in the road.
The vehicle reportedly rolled, before crashing into a tree.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) firefighters
and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics were
assisting the patient, who was trapped in the cabin of the
vehicle, when the aeromedical team arrived.
It took almost one hour to free the man.
He was treated for leg and upper body injuries, before being
airlifted to Toowoomba Hospital, in a serious but stable
condition.
YOUNG SWIMMERS GET THEIR COMPETITIVE JUICES FLOWING
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Young Chinchilla swimmers made
a splash on Friday as some were
introduced to the joy of racing in
the pool.
In the first event for the season, Swimfit
Chinchilla held their annual Maccas Mini
Meet which is used as a vehicle to encourage
children to try competitive swimming.
Events Manager Grace Hogarth said it was all
for any children but mainly had the Learn to
Swim Students participating.
The event included age-ability appropriate
races so even the little ones could hop in and
have a go at racing and instructors were also
in the water to help anyone that needed it.
“We also played some fun games, and it was
Advertise in Chin Wag NOW - Call 0411 896 004
a good way to get the kids back into the
swimming season,” Miss Hogarth said.
“It was a very relaxing and chilled day and
was ultimately aimed at just being a fun day
for all the kids.
“A lot of kids are involved already in our
program, but we had a few more come
because it’s school holidays which was good,
“It was nice to see some new faces.”
Swimfit’s Learn to Swim Program starts at just
three months of age right up to their squad
children, however, doesn’t allow the students
to participate in competitions.
With a desire to be competitive and work their
way up in the swimming, the meet was also
a ‘Come and Try Day’ for the local swimming
club, the Chinchilla Sharks.
Miss Hogarth explained that the Chinchilla
Sharks do a local club meet every Thursday
night at the pool, and the pool is closed,
especially for them to be able to hold it.
Open to all ages with the only condition
of membership the ability to swim 12.5m
unassisted which was tested at Friday’s event.
The club hold meets all around the region
throughout the year including in Chinchilla,
Miles and Dalby.
“It’s like netball on Saturday,” Miss Hogarth
said.
“They do freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke
and butterfly, and it’s totally up to the parents
about what races they do go in.
“Normally they say you go in freestyle and
work your way up from there because it’s
your most straightforward and basic stroke.
The Sharks are set to be back in the water
for 2020/2021 with the season sign on this
Thursday night (October 8) at the Chinchilla
pool starting at 5.30pm.
It’s the perfect opportunity to hear what the
club is all about and all be a time to have all
new members graded and accessed before
the start of the season.
The club will also be able to help members
access their Swim Central account, meet the
committee and have any questions about the
upcoming season answered.
The executive committee have all been
working hard to meet the required Covid-19
compliance regulations, so there will be a few
changes that will need to be made, but the
club will advise them closer to the date.
These mainly will be concerning signing in
and out, plus how many people we can have
on-site.
LIONS SET UP TO LIGHT UP CHINCHILLA
PARKLAND WITH CHRISTMAS LIGHT SHOW
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
It was a roaring success last year, with an estimated 1500 attending
the opening night alone and in good news to the community, the
event is set to return this year.
The Chinchilla Botanic Parkland will again be an array of colourful Christmas displays
during the month of December for this Lions Christmas Light Show.
With many popular Chinchilla events already being cancelled due to COVID 19, the light
show is the perfect opportunity for the family to get out of the house and enjoy the
Christmas spirit.
Treasurer of Lions Club Tony Minnis confirmed the event will go ahead aware the virus is
still impacting the event.
“Owing to the restrictions relating to COVID 19 this year the show will be restricted to lights
only,” Mr Minnis said.
“Unfortunately, there will be no entertainment or catering.”
The show will continue for a week and a half with the lights being switched on, on Saturday, December 19 and remain up
until Wednesday, December 30, giving families plenty of time to enjoy it.
Last year spectators were treated to over 100 sets of lights and an overall budget of the project between $50,000 and
$60,000, made possible through the generous financial support of over 50 local Chinchilla businesses.
However, this year’s display is set to be even bigger.
“The Lions Club will be stepping up the display with some $15,000 worth of new light displays being featured,” Mr Minnis
said.
Entry will be by way of a gold coin donation and because it will be a COVID 19 Safe Event Mr Minnis ask the community
to follow the guidelines in place.
“Physical, social distancing will have to be maintained and is the responsibility of those attending,” he said.
“Attendees are to stay at home if unwell or have a cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue, or shortness of breath.”
“If you become unwell during the event, please seek assistance from one of the event officials.”
THE CHIN WAG - WEDNESDAY October 7, 2020 - Page 8
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
It's a cross-town rivalry that
football players describe as the
equivalent of the grand final and
when the two teams meet, both
teams raise to the occasion and do
whatever it takes to win and that
recently happened in Chinchills.
That's why the Chinchilla Bears were left
devastated on Saturday night when they
lost to the Dalby Tigers at the Chinchilla
Recreation Grounds in their last home game
for the season.
With the Tigers bagging two goals in the first
half to the Bears none and then having a third
reach the back of the net in the second half,
the final score was 3 – 0.
Captain of the Bears Jonty Calleja explained
that it was a hard pill to swallow for the home
side.
"We hate losing to Dalby," he said.
"You enter the dressing room, and everyone
is gutted, especially losing to the Tigers
because they are hard ones to take.
"It's like losing a grand final when you loose
to them."
The captain said that his side went into the
match with the right attitude and each player
knew what they had to do but unfortunately
didn't execute it as well as they had hoped
for.
"We spoke postgame about the fact that we
DISAPPOINTMENT AS DALBY TAKE THE DERBY
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
The Queensland Rural, Regional & Remote
Women’s Network (QRRRWN) are committed
to connecting people across rural and
regional Queensland.
Through the Origin Sponsor and Donations program, the
QRRRWN has been supported with holding an event to
celebrate International Rural Women’s Day and Queensland
Mental Health Week.
With only two events held in Queensland throughout the
week, Miles is fortunate enough to be hosting the event,
which is titled ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind and Spirit’.
The event will be held at the Leichhardt Centre on Thursday,
October 15 and will begin at 10am.
Key speakers Dr Ansmarie Van Erp and Bianca Rice, from
Queensland Rural Medical Service Toowoomba, will talk
about the importance of keeping physically fit and mentally
and emotionally healthy and providing strategies to assist.
Also, a panel discussion will be held discussing the topic
‘Resilience of Rural Women’.
Helen Wylie will lead the discussion from the Miles Hospital,
and she will be the master of ceremonies for the occasion.
The panel itself is filled with some remarkable women from all
different walks of life, including Susan Gale, the President of
the QCWA Miles Branch.
Marrissa Moore, the Health Service Navigator for the Western
Downs, RHealth, and Anna Fields, the Origin Access Manager
(Reedy Creek, Combabula & Peat) and local landholder will
also be on the panel.
The final stops will be taken by Margaretta Morgan and Robyn
Nixon, who are also local landholders.
Due to coronavirus restrictions, the local event does have
number restrictions and for unable to be in attendance will
be able to view the session online with a recording to be
made available.
The second event is ‘Taking Time to Connect’ and is in Ayr at
could have probably played any other team
in our competition the same wat we played
against Dalby and probably would have
smashed them," he said.
"It's just that the rivalry between Dalby
and us, we all just lift for the occasion, and
unfortunately we just didn't lift enough."
Coach Joe Calleja said that even though the
Bears lost on the scoreboard, the team didn't
lose on the par.
"I think we played well enough that if things
went our way we could have drawn the game
or even won the game," he said.
"It's just unfortunate the bounce of the ball
didn't go our way.
"The boys played a fantastic game, and to
their credit, they lifted for the occasion.
"They deserved a lot more out of that game
than what they got.
"We will go back again and definitely know
we can beat them.
"Hopefully it's in the grand final and a few
bounces go our way and we win."
"We know we can beat them because we beat
them in the first game this year," Jonty added.
Despite the loss, it did provide an opportunity
for the team to take something out of it and
moving forward they know what they must
work on.
According to Jonty, it's all about the intensity
on par.
If there is a 50/50 ball, the team needs to
make sure they are reading it as a 100/0 ball,
not a 50/50 one.
"If there is a ball free in no man's land and two
players are coming into it, we need to have
that mental mindset that we are going to get
that ball first," he said.
Nearing the end of the season and with a goal
to finish in the top two, the loss does mean
the Bears were unable to steal the spot over
their Western Downs rivals, and with only two
away games left for the season, that goal has
been a little bit harder now.
The team will be heading off next weekend to
Toowoomba to take on the West Wanderers
who do sit below them on the table however
they certainly aren't seeing it as an easy
match.
Jonty explained that only a few days the
team got a little bit of scare when playing the
bottom of the table, allowing them to score
in the first four minutes of the game.
"That afternoon was a massive wakeup call
for us that we had to pull our finger out and
get into gear," he said.
"Fortunately, enough we ended up winning
that game 3 -1.
"So next weekend we need to make sure we
are on from the first whistle.
"Everyone after this COVID period who are
playing in this competition, even though
there is a last placed person and a first placed
person, all teams are pretty on par, and it's all
about who wants it more on the day."
The game against the Wanderers will be
held on Sunday, October 11 at the West
Wanderers Field 1 in Toowoomba with kickoff
at 11:00am.
the Honeybears were also scheduled to play
on Saturday against the Gatton Redbacks
