Property owners struggling 

with invasive animals will have 

the opportunity to access 1080 

baits this month, through the 

Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s 

vertebrate pest baiting program. 

The council is offering eligible landholders 

access to manufactured 1080 baits for the 

effective control of wild dogs, foxes and pigs, 

with baits available for collection on October 

14 and 15. 

Landholders are reminded of their obligation 

to notify all adjoining and directly opposite 

landholders of their baiting activity 72 hours 

prior to laying baits. 

Those using baits on their properties must 

also ensure the provided warning signage 

is attached to all property entrances and 

extremities throughout the baiting period.

Each year, September 29 is a day 

to pause and give recognition 

to the dedication and service of 

police officers, not just in our local 

communities, but throughout the 

country. 

National Police Remembrance Day is 

recognised on this date not just in Australia, 

but also New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, 

Samoa, and the Solomon Islands. 

Each year, vigils, marches and services are 

held to commemorate the date, though these 

events were more sparse and subdued this 

year due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. 

Local MP Jim McDonald offered his thanks for 

the efforts of local police officers. 

“Thank you to all those who serve to protect 

us,” he said. 

“Our thoughts are especially with the families 

and friends of those who have paid the 

ultimate sacrifice in keeping us safe.” 

National Police Remembrance Day is not just 

a day to remember and honour police officers 

who have been killed in the line of duty, of 

which there have been 147 in Queensland, 

but also to recognise officers who have passed 

on, but whose deaths did not occur as a 

consequence of their duty. 

The date has been a long-standing tradition 

in Australia, with 2019 marking the 30-year 

anniversary of National Police Remembrance 

Day.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council 

received a credit rating of Neutral 

in the 2019 Credit Review. 

The Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC) 

completed the Credit Review process based 

on information provided by Council up to 31 

August 2020. 

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Finance 

Portfolio Councillor Chris Wilson (pictured 

below) said Council’s rating has been 

upgraded from Weak to Moderate with a 

Neutral outlook. 

“This rating is reflective of previous and 

forecast operating surpluses and adequate 

debt servicing. 

“As an organisation, our high councilcontrolled 

revenue indicates the ability 

to respond to adverse events, such as the 

COVID-19 pandemic, while total borrowings 

have also decreased significantly,” Cr Wilson 

said. 

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Cr 

Tanya Milligan said Council continues to work 

tirelessly to turn the organisation’s finances 

around. 

“We continue to work hard to deliver on a 

back-to-basics approach to spending and 

we are focused on delivering responsible 

and sustainable Budgets that have the best 

interests of the entire Lockyer 

Valley at heart. 

“As an organisation, we are living within our 

means while still being able to plan for the 

future and we will continue to make decisions 

that are in the best interest of the community,”

PLAYGROUND FOR LAIDLEY 

RECREATION RESERVE 

Mr Jim McDonald MP Member 

for Lockyer has announced that 

the LNP will fund $250 000 to 

construct a playground at the 

Laidley Recreation Reserve if 

elected on 31 October 2020. 

The Laidley Recreation Reserve is the main 

sporting precinct in Laidley with netball, 

soccer, rugby league, touch, little athletics 

and softball clubs housed at the facility. In 

addition, the community make use of the 

walking paths, skate park and gymnasium 

daily. 

“A playground is included in the Laidley 

Recreation Reserve Masterplan and this 

funding will provide an important addition to 


the well-used facility,” said Mr McDonald. 

“Having lived in Laidley for almost 13 years, 

I know that a playground at the Recreation 

Reserve is the missing link”, said Mr McDonald 

“Playgrounds provide a place for children to 

work off energy, have fun and interact with 

their peers. It also gives them a safe learning 

environment to develop physical, social, 

emotional and problem-solving skills,” said Mr 

McDonald.

State government wants to enfranchise 

convicts including drug traffickers, whilst 

always pushing to lower the voting age. 

These policies will guarantee the destruction 

of Australian society as we knew it. 

You may think she'll be right mate - in short 

‘she’ won't even be a she - rather some poor 

mixed up ‘weed’ smoking pseudo intellectual 

of indeterminate parentage and sex, near 

zero I.Q. with a mind bent by a socialist 

indoctrinated school agenda, well versed 

in street demonstrations, slum survival and 

perversions but won't even travel to work 

about in our labour strapped agricultural and 

mining industries. 

As more and more drugs both legal and illicit 

are pumped into our population, the billions of 

3 rd World hordes are slavering at the mouth as 

they anticipate their occupation of Australia. 

Wake up Australia, get smart, get active or get 

out. 

The free ride will soon be over. 

What our forefathers fought for is nearly lost 

on drugs. 

WIth a simply stated game plan task force in 

each postcode, achieving an average of only 

10 members in each of our 16,000 postcodes 

at a nominal membership fee of $20 per 

member (about the price of a cheap packet 

of cigarettes - with no paid personnel, would 

give us a $3,000,000 war chest to back good 

people into our drug plagued national and 

state capitals. 

With the nation drifting towards bankruptcy,

everywhere, also questionable refugees and

SAVAGE SUPPORTERS HORSIN’ AROUND 

Local Independent candidate for Lockyer, 

Jim Savage, got a pleasant surprise recently 

when he dropped in at a local farm. The 

farmer knew he was coming and prepared 

this little "presentation" for him. 

Jim has a long history with horses and

The one in the photo slithered its way through 

several Laidley residences recently before 

being run over by a vehicle on Summer 

Street, near the corner of Wyman Close, it 

measured around 1.2 metres in length. 

This species has the unfortunate distinction 

of causing more deaths from snake bite than 

any other species of snake in Australia. 

Many bites have been a direct result of 

people trying to kill these snakes and could 

obviously have been avoided. 

Simple precautions, such as wearing long 

pants, thick socks and solid footwear when 

working or exploring outdoors greatly 

reduces the risk of being envenomated 

should there be a close encounter with a 

delighted to see this beautiful little chestnut 

filly with this message. 

"It is lovely to have these little offers of 

support as I go around the electorate" said 

Savage. 

"It gives me heart to continue what I am 

trying to achieve".

be tangled with, if it feels threatened it can 

become aggressive and it is very fast, some 

things we can do to reduce our chances of 

coming in contact with the Eastern Brown: 

• Remove shelter like piles of rubble, building 

materials and rock walls; 

• Keep grass short; 

• Create a clearing around the house; 

• Plant native trees that attract snake-eating 

birds like kookaburras; 

• Get rid of rodents; 

• Remove water sources like ponds and 

bromeliads.

CANNERY IN THE LOCKYER 

VALLEY AT LAST 

I was delighted to hear the news of positive 

progress in the plans for a new Cannery for 

Lockyer to be situated at Withcott. 

In 2017 I was the only candidate running for 

the seat of Lockyer who made an effort to 

hi-lite and come out in full support of this 

wonderful project. 

Not only will this create 200 plus jobs during 

construction and permanent full time jobs 

during production, but the flow on effect for 

onfarm jobs is enormous. 

Since the closure of Golden Circle Qld in 2011 

farmers have had no outlet to sell produce 

for canning or other forms of value adding 

processing. 

Not only can Lockyer farmers have certainty 

of ongoing sales at agreed prices, allowing 

for budgeting and long term planning of farm 

management and crop cycles, but farmers 

from outside the district, such as mango and 

pineapple from the Sunshine Coast and more 

northern areas of Qld. will have a cannery to 

supply. 

This will bring more money and work into our 

region. This is truly a win-win scenario and I 

am amazed others in positions of power and 

influence have been so tardy in their support 

- until now of course, everyone likes a winner. 

I offer my sincere best wishes to Col Dorber 

(CEO) and his team and wish them all the very 

best with this fantastic project.

WARREGO HIGHWAY SAFETY 

AND JOBS PRIORITY PLUS 

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald 

has met with Member for Wright 

Scott Buchholz at Fairway Drive, 

Hatton Vale (pictured below) 

recently to discuss his priorities 

for this funding. 

‘A future LNP government will commit 

$75 million to safety improvements on the 

Warrego Highway,’ said Mr McDonald. ‘After 

listening to the community and getting an 

understanding of their concerns, this funding 

has been earmarked for use at some of the 

highways most dangerous intersections.’ 

Mr McDonald said that priorities for this 

funding would be the construction of 

deceleration and turning lanes and the 

extension of existing acceleration lanes at 

Niemeyer Road, Summerholm Road and 

Fairway Drive. Other projects prioritised 

for completion include improvements to 

pedestrian and vehicle movements across the 

old Warrego Highway at Withcott. 

‘These are three of the most dangerous 

intersections on the Warrego Highway. 

Residents risk their lives everyday trying to 

turn into or out of these intersections and it is 

time something was done to reduce this risk.’ 

The Lockyer MP also thanked Federal Member 

for Wright, Scott Buchholz MP for the federal 

government’s commitment to the project. 

‘The federal government has contributed 

$60 Million towards this project. All we need 

now is for the state government to produce 

their contribution. This will not happen under 

Labor and that is why it is so important that 

we change the government on the 31st of 

October,’ said Mr McDonald. 

LNP leader Deb Frecklington and Member 

for Lockyer Jim McDonald made the 

announcement on 18th August, that a future 

LNP government will provide the $15m 

needed to progress this project. It is part of 

the LNP’s $1B commitment to infrastructure 

and will see tenders called within 100 day of a 

new government.

The impacts of climate change and 

the ongoing drought continue 

to cast long shadows over the 

Lockyer Valley region, as well as 

the additional difficulties caused 

by the COVID-19 crisis. 

In response to these problems, the Lockyer 

Valley Regional Council is launching a Drought 

Support Expo in November, and inviting local 

drought-affected rural landholders and farm 

workers to attend. 

The event was partly funded through a grant 

from the Australian Government Drought 

Communities Programme, and is a spiritual 

successor to last year’s Livestock Farming 

Drought Support Forum, which attracted 

around 80 attendees, and provided roughly 

20 items for council to address. 

Due in part to COVID-19 restrictions, 

attendance to this year’s event will be limited, 

and is not intended for the general public, 

with the council reserving the right to restrict 

attendance specifically to local droughtaffected 

rural landholders, farmers and farm 

workers, and farm supply businesses. 

The event is free to attend, but bookings are 

required, so be sure to get in quick. 

The Expo brings together a range of 

information and support services for those 

dealing with the effects of the drought, 

featuring presentations about climate 

outlook, land management, financial support 

and structuring, and looking after yourself 

and your mates. 

Morning tea and lunch will be provided while 

attendees browse the information stalls and 

chat with the support service representatives. 

The event will take place from 8:45am through 

to 2:30pm on Wednesday, November 4, at the 

Gatton Shire Hall.

SEARCH UNDERWAY FOR STOLEN CAR 

TRAILER IN LAIDLEY 



The brazen, late-night theft of a trailer 

(pictured below) has a Laidley resident 

calling for public support. 

“The trailer was here at midnight when I went to bed, 

and gone at 9am,” owner Kole Lambert said. 

The missing trailer is described as having a 15-foot 

deck, tie-down rails on both sides, and stoppers on 

the rear of the deck. 

Distinctive features include green reflective tape at 

the rear above the lights, orange and black on the 

back of the guards, white on the front of the deck, 

and front of the guards. 

The trailer can also be identified by its registration 

plate: 594UGG. 

“If you see it, contact Police Link straight away. If the 

trailer is being towed follow it as far as you can,” Mr 

Lambert said. 

“Reward paid upon its safe return to me in the same 

condition it was before being stolen, or leads to the 

recovery of my trailer.”

The Lockyer Valley Speedway 

is back, and have a spectacular 

opening event planned to 

celebrate their triumphant return 

at the Gatton Showgrounds. 

Witness the up-and-coming generation of 

speedsters take to the track with the second 

Annual Junior Speedway Kart Grand Prix, 

kicking off the 2020/21 Summer of Speed in 

style. 

Other events scheduled for the day include 

the Senior Speedway Karts, Stockcars Track 

Championship, Nostalgia Sedans Track 

Championship, RSA Outlaw Sedans, RSA 

Limited Sedans, RSA Div 2 Fender Benders, 

and Paul Morris Racing Academy SSA Junior 

Sedans. 

For those interested in old-school speedway 

action, there will also be demonstrations with 

classic and vintage cars running pre-program 

from 10am, bringing new life to history from 

as far back as the ‘60’s, up to the ‘90’s. 

The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 

10, with general admission opening from 9am, 

and full canteen and food truck services will 

also be available from this time, while the bar 

will be available from 1pm. 

Racing will be from 10am, and wrap up by 

10pm, with plenty of high-stakes excitement 

to witness in the interim. 

There will be a limited capacity due to 

COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, and all 

visitors must sign in upon entry.

the Community Connections Night at the Gatton Shire 

Hall on October 22. 

Dozens of individuals, businesses, community groups and organisations are 

already engaged with the event, as stallholders, presenters, or sponsors.

Local Tickets, Plainland Crossing, and ARTC/Inland Rail. 

There will also be live entertainment, food for sale, market stalls, and much

CHRISTMAS CANCELLED, DUE TO COVID

By this point in the year, logistical planning and event 

bookings would be well underway for the carnival, 

but these preparations haven’t been able to proceed. 

Organisers took to social media to share the 

unfortunate news. 

“We thank everyone for their continued interest in the 

Christmas Carnival held in the Main Street of Laidley, 

but at this stage we cannot see that the Carnival will 

happen in 2020,” their statement read. 

“However, celebrate this Christmas with your close 

family and friends and look forward to this amazing

JOIN THE AUSSIE 

BACKYARD BIRD COUNT 

Lockyer Valley Regional Council 

is urging residents to take up the 

challenge of bird counting for 

this year’s Aussie Backyard Bird 

Count. 

This citizen-science event, coordinated by 

BirdLife Australia, takes place across the 

country from Monday 19 to Sunday 25 

October, coinciding with Bird Week. 

Lockyer Valley Community Facilities and 

Environment Portfolio Councillor Michael 

Hagan said the bird count provided a 

snapshot for the same time each year which 

allowed an analysis into trends affecting our 

bird communities. 

“Our common backyard bird species give us 

the best indication of the health of our natural 

environment and the bird count allows 

families and individuals to gain broader 

knowledge about birds in their area in a safe 

and fun way,” he said. 

“During 2019 the White Australian Ibis 

knocked the Red Wattlebird out of tenth 

most-seen bird species spot. 

“This change has been interpreted as being 

caused by birds being driven into populated 

areas through drought and the worst fire 

season we’ve seen, which makes this year’s 

count vitally important to see how our birds 

are recovering.” 

To complete the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, 

all you need to do is spend 20 minutes in your 

backyard, local park, or favourite outdoor 

space and note down the birds that you see. 

Once completed, you can submit your 

bird count through the online web form or 

through the free Aussie Bird Count app. 

If you’re not sure about a bird there is a field 

guide/bird search function on the app and 

website to help. 

You can take part in a group or as an individual 

and you can submit as many counts as you 

would like throughout the Bird Count. 

BirdLife Australia organises and promotes 

Bird Week with the goal of inspiring 

Australians to take action and get involved in 

bird conservation efforts.

HEALTH PARTNERS UNITE TO TRANSFORM BREAST CANCER CARE 

A pilot study to transform 

follow-up care for women after 

breast cancer surgery could 

revolutionise care for women 

in the West Moreton region and 

improve their quality of life. 

West Moreton Health and Ipswich Hospital 

Foundation (IHF) are teaming up for Breast 

Cancer Awareness Month (1 – 31 October) 

to raise money for the West Moreton Breast 

Cancer Research Project, which would 

investigate the feasibility of a virtual breast 

care clinic to support patients after breast 

cancer surgery. 

West Moreton Health’s McGrath Breast Care 

Nurses Karen Miles and Tamara Tomasev 

said, if adopted, the virtual model would be 

ground-breaking. 

“What we want to do is expand on the 

existing after-surgery consultations, which 

focus on physical assessment and symptom 

management, to provide a comprehensive 

assessment of patient’s psychosocial health 

and quality of life,” Ms Miles said. 

“The aim will be to decrease the burden of 

disease and improve clinical management 

by allocating more time for a comprehensive 

assessment that also promotes symptom 

management, self-care and education 

through improved patient-clinician 


communication.” 

Ms Tomasev said: “When patients feel involved 

and supported in their care, they have better 

outcomes in terms of their psychosocial 

needs and quality of life”. 

IHF chief executive officer James Sturges 

said the research project aimed to deliver 

local outcomes for local people using local 

researchers. 

“This will make a meaningful difference to 

the people of West Moreton,” Mr Sturges said. 

“It is about local fundraising to support local 

research to help local people through local 

services,” Mr Sturges said. 

“I hope individuals, groups and businesses 

in West Moreton will help us achieve this by 

supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month 

through making a donation or buying IHF 

fundraising merchandise and joining us to Go 

Pink on 23 October.”

Kerrie Freeman said it was hoped the research 

project would pave the way for a six-month 

pilot, using West Moreton Health’s existing 

successful telehealth platform. 

“We don’t know of this model of care 

happening anywhere else right now, so this 

wouldn’t just be a first for West Moreton,” Dr 

Freeman said. 

“This is another example of great innovation 

and research leadership by West Moreton 

people to advance person-centred care.’’ 

The pilot would be developed for anyone 

who has completed surgery and is going to 

have other treatment such as radiotherapy or 

hormonal therapy.

NEW MARKETS FOR 

GATTON 

Step back in time on the first Sunday of the 

month at the Gatton Historical Village, for the 

Gatton Village Market day event. 

Watch a blacksmith work his forge, marvel at hundred-yearold 

tractors and working pumps, which are some of the 

oldest working engines in the country. 

“The Gatton Historical Village will be open for tours to coincide 

with the Gatton Village Markets” said Barry Hoffmann, from 

the Gatton and District Historical Society. 

“We are excited to bring to life old machinery and combined 

with the market it will be a great day out for visitors and 

locals.” 

In addition to the machinery and vehicles on display, several 

of the buildings will be open to visitors, and members of the 

Lockyer Antique Motor Association Inc. will be showcasing 

their vehicles as well. 

Entry by donation, from 8am until 1pm. 

The Gatton Village Markets will be held on the grassed area 

in front of the Gatton Historical Village on the first Sunday of 

the month from 7am to 1pm, with entry from near the Lake 

Apex skatepark. 

The markets will showcase growers, makers and creators 

from the Lockyer Valley and surrounds. 

Many makers and creators have a large range of products, 

with succulents, flowers, preserves, jewellery and homewares 

all on offer from the 30+ local stallholders. 

Working with local community groups and social enterprises 

Market Coordinator, Tiffany Brieschke, said the “monthly 

markets will offer something for everyone". 

Gatton Village Markets are committed to ensuring everyone’s 

health and wellness, with open-aired markets and social 

distancing measures in place.

Experience gets Brisbane home against 

Lockyer/Ipswich in Over 60s Division 2 at 

Cahill Park on Sunday. 

Sent in to bat on a slow wicket, Brisbane 

made 145 all out, despite losing a wicket 

second ball when Pettersson snapped up a 

sharp return catch from Johnston. The home 

side were always well ahead of the required 

scoring rate but were bundled out for 77 in 

23 overs. 

Brisbane skipper John Stackpoole set the 

tone for the innings with a cautious 14 off 42 

balls in partnership with an unusually patient 

Ron Faulks, who put 22 runs together off 46 

balls. Together they got the visitors to the first 

break with 41 runs on the board. 

With the retirement of these two batsmen, 

Terry Seach continued the grafting pattern, 

scoring 18 off 41 balls. 

All batsmen were slow in their run scoring, 

number ten Bob Ford made an almost “breezy” 

26 off 40 balls. Ross Towner contributed 

17 n/o off 37 balls to assist Brisbane to a 

defendable total, which was boosted by 30 

sundries. 

Six of the eight bowlers got wickets, but two 

for ten by Jeff Evans was the best. 

Chasing 145 on Cahill Park this season has 

been relatively easy, but this pitch was slow 

and batsmen needed to play straight and 

work for their runs. The experience and 

patience that Brisbane applied to their 

batting was not replicated by many of the 

home team.

LOCKYER VETERANS CRICKET 

for nine runs off his first four deliveries and 

thought that he was in for a tough day. 

However, patience and straight bowling 

paid off when Pettersson could not hit three 

consecutive fours, getting bowled instead. 

Only Brad Hines with 17 off 16 balls before 

holing out, and Ian Kimlin who replicated 

the Brisbane style with 18 off 40 balls, got 

to double figures. Brisbane conceded only 

seven sundries in the innings. 

In his previous match, Ross Towner had 

taken five wickets for eleven runs. His return 

in this match was six wickets for 18 runs. He 

commented that when batsmen go after you, 

patience and a full length are very important. 

Towner also used the easterly breeze well, 

swinging the ball away consistently from the 

right handers. R Johnston provided excellent 

support taking three for 14 off six overs. 

Brad Hines said that Lockyer/Ipswich bowled 

and fielded well but their top order batsmen 

could not apply themselves to the constraints 

of the pitch. 

John Stackpoole noted the difference in 

sundries of the two innings and said Brisbane 

won close matches because of their discipline 

in this area. 

He also said that it was a wicket that required 

care when attempting to play shots. 

Ross Towner was MoM for Brisbane, Jeff Evans 

for Lockyer/Ipswich, who are now in third 

place on the ladder.

In a seesawing first half, Souths tigers really 

put it the Eagles. They led 8-0 and then went 

to the sheds 14-10. Jaren Bender and Nat 

Jones scored the first two tries for Souths 

whilst Braydon Wilson scored two minutes 

out from the break. Goodna weren’t rattled, 

it was Tigers last ditch defence that was 

annoying for the Eagles. David Lopu and 

Deijion Leugaimafa scored for Goodna to get 

them to their 10 first half points.

West End gave notice of their title claims 

when they defeated Norths tigers in an 

entertaining game. The Bulldogs late 

tournament form has been impressive and 

have now beaten Valleys and Norths and 

have been competitive against Goodna each 

time they have played them. 

They finished off their regular season form 

well and are ready to have a crack at the 

Eagles next weekend. 

It was a tight tussle right through out the 

game until Regan Wilde’s late goal put the 

score out of touch for the Tigers. 

Bernard Mosby scored a double with Maxwell 

Fesolai, Jesse Zampech and Lisite Hafoka 

getting meat pies. Young Guns, Amazaiya 

Lepolo, Luke Self and Ty Humphries all played 

well for Norths. 

Bulldogs deserved their win but Norths were 

not disgraced and both teams will be ready

These two teams did not let their supporters 

down when Valleys held on to defeat a 

fast finishing Gatton Hawks. Roosters led 

18-4 at one stage thanks to the brilliance of 

Parramatta bound Josh Chappell. It took a 

while for the scoreboard to start ticking over. 

Both sides put their bodies on the line early in 

a free-flowing match. 

It was a pleasure seeing both clubs young 

brigade showing off their talents. Brock 

Diment (Valleys) and Hawks’ Dylan Flanagan 

and Oliver Bichel were very good. 

Josh Chappell had the ball on a string, 

especially his kicking game. He and Ben Cook 

combined well and they looked every bit of 

their 2019 premiership winning form. Cook 

scored what turned out to be a crucial try late 

in the second half all but injuring himself in 

the process. Tyson White, Shannon Hicks and 

Oliver Bichel scored late in the game to get 

the Hawks to 24-18 and the next period of 

play was frantic until Chappell slotted a clever 

field goal to get his team past the post. 

It was excellent practice for Valleys prior to 

being the only Toowoomba team entering 

the finals.

REGIONAL COMMUNITIES HARDEST HIT BY SUICIDE 

Regional Australians impacted 

by suicide are more likely to 

experience multiple loses of 

family, friends and community 

members (67%) compared to 

their city counterparts (60%) – 

new research has revealed for the 

first time. 

It comes as the findings also show growing 

concerns the economy, jobs (+7%), cost of 

living (+4%) and drugs and alcohol use (+5%) 

will increase suicide rates in the regions in the 

wake of COVID19. 

National peak body, Suicide Prevention 

Australia, this week released the regionalspecific 

results in the review to World Suicide 

Prevention Day which was on September 10, 

2020. 

Suicide Prevention Australia is the national 

peak body and that has been providing 

support for Australia’s suicide prevention 

sector for more than 25 years. They support 

and advocate for their members to drive 

continual improvement in suicide prevention 

policy, programs and services. 

Their reach is broad, including member 

organisations, governments, businesses, 

researchers, practitioners and those with 

lived experience. 

They are focused on an integrated approach 

to suicide prevention encompassing mental 

health, social, economic and community 

factors and they believe that through 

collaborative effort and shared purpose, we 

can achieve their vision of a world without 

suicide. 

CEO Nieves Murray said over 4 million 

regional Australians had been personally 

impacted by suicide, with 66% of those living 

outside city limits supporting the Federal 

Government introducing a standalone 

National Suicide Prevention Act that takes a 

whole of government, not just mental health, 

approach. 

“I live in our regions and you only have to 

look around and see that global disasters 

like COVID19 hit our local economies, 

communities and services harder and faster 

than our capital cities,” Ms Murray said. 

“The better we can proactively predict what 

economic and social risks are facing our 

regional and rural communities, the better 

we can prepare Australians and prevent 

suicide rates increasing. 

“International evidence shows the best 

way to achieve this is through a standalone 

National Suicide Prevention Act that embeds 

a whole of government, not just a mental 

health, response.” 

In some encouraging news, Ms Murray said 

a third (30%) of regional Australians had 

accessed a suicide prevention service – either 

on their behalf or someone else – the same 

rate as their city counterparts. 

The regional results are from an exclusive 

YouGov poll of over 1000 Australians 

commissioned by Suicide Prevention 

Australia as part of World Suicide Prevention 

Day 2020. 

“In shining a light on suicide prevention, it’s 

important to not only help those in need, but 

also support Australians to know what to say 

beyond RUOK?” Ms Murray said.
