time-shifting method.<br />
Inspector Bienzle, Germany’s favourite<br />
TV detective, is sure to have<br />
noticed this, as well as the “big packs”<br />
which hung in the exhibition halls during<br />
filming of the “Tatort” television programme<br />
on the construction site during<br />
the summer of 2006. In designing these<br />
halls, the architects decided to use suspension<br />
roofs. Due to better distribution<br />
of the tensile forces in the base, they considerably<br />
reduce the amount of required<br />
materials yet still have a spectacular<br />
appearance. During the construction<br />
phase, it was necessary to “acquaint” the<br />
arched sub-roof structure with the future<br />
weight of the roof structures and insulation<br />
materials. This task was performed<br />
using plastic bags filled with gravel, each<br />
weighing up to one ton. At the same time,<br />
the “packs” protected the roof structures<br />
from strong gusts of wind until the last<br />
gaps in the building facades were closed.<br />
Innovative climate control technology<br />
The climate control concept for the New<br />
<strong>Stuttgart</strong> Trade Fair Centre was also subject<br />
to the highest standards. Just recently,<br />
this concept was awarded the <strong>2007</strong><br />
innovation prize by the renowned trade<br />
publication “Trade Show Executive”. It<br />
functions using the principle of layer ventilation,<br />
a method used here for the first<br />
time in trade fair centre construction:<br />

exhibition halls. Layer ventilation takes<br />
advantage of this. It supplies fresh air only<br />
to the lower level of air, which is warmed<br />
by the trade fair activities. As a result,<br />
only half as much air is circulated as with<br />
a standard ventilation system. In each of<br />
the exhibition halls, the 16 source-air<br />
outlets – each approximately two metres<br />
high and more than five metres wide –<br />
are, therefore, not located on the ceiling,<br />
but instead near floor level on the long<br />
walls of the halls. Fresh air streams from<br />
the outlets to the exhibitors and visitors at<br />
a low rate of speed. The heated air in the<br />
upper half of halls is drawn out by pumps<br />
and, through heat recovery, benefits the<br />
Trade Fair Centre energy cycle. In addition,<br />
the Trade Fair Centre is also<br />
equipped with innovative heating and<br />
cooling technology which centrally<br />
adjusts the temperature in all halls, allowing<br />
the individual halls to operate with<br />
smaller systems than would otherwise be<br />
