COLLETT’S CORNER is more
than halfway towards crowdfunding
the $800,000 it needs to
progress to its next stage.
As of yesterday morning, the
project had raised $448,440 from
143 people. The crowdfunding
campaign closes on October 29.
Members of the public can buy
shares in the community-owned
project by Ohu Developments for
$120 per share. It aims to raise up
to $1.4m.
Those behind the $14m threestorey,
mixed-use development
are forecasting an average annual
return on 7 per cent for those who
invest at this stage.
Collett’s Corner is planned for
a 974 sq m site on the corner of
London and Oxford Sts in Lyttelton.
It will feature a wellness
centre, hospitality outlets and
shops on the ground floor, and
20 privately-owned apartments
above.
The design gained resource
consent in March. It now hopes
to open by June 2023 – about
six months later than what was
forecast before the Covid-19
pandemic struck. Building is expected
Need a high quality builder to provide you with
good, old fashioned workmanship?
That’s a history that H&H Builders can be proud of.
H&H Builders boasts a proud history.
Combining three generations of
traditional, old fashioned service and
workmanship, we professionally deliver
high quality lifestyle building solutions
within Canterbury.
“Growing up in Southland, I was
exposed to building at a very young age.
My great-grandfather, poppa and father
were all qualified carpenters.” says Mark.
“Back then, the builder would be involved
in every aspect of the build from the
foundations through to the key turning
the lock for the first time. They did
everything on site including framing up
to mixing plaster. It was all very detailed
work and I loved hearing how they were
able to adapt to whatever was thrown
your way at any given time”.
This attention to detail and practical
problem solving is what H&H Builders
thrive on today. They take pride in being
detail focused, figuring out complex
situations and delivering solutions for
their customers.
Mark completed a building apprenticeship
in 2005. In 2006 he moved to Australia,
gaining more, valuable experience. His
no nonsense, practical approach saw
Mark teaching carpenters and builders
they didn’t need to outsource all minor
aspects of a build.
“Returning to New Zealand in 2007, I
started H&H Builders because I wanted to
have the Hattrill name and craft attached
to my job,” Mark says.
“I enjoy getting to know my clients
stories, history and how that can be
worked into their build”.
And this approach has paid off. He has
many happy clients from high end builds,
hillside builds, renovations and rustic
log homes within Canterbury.
Every build is an investment, so I take
great care in crafting something you
can share with your children and
future generations to come.”
For a builder who will provide peace of
mind, trust, experience and confidence
give Mark a call to start a no obligation
discussion on how he help you.
• High-end and hillside construction or renovation
• Bespoke, American standard, rustic log homes.
Boost for small businesses
• By Avneesh Vincent
CHRISTCHURCH’S first
Learning Exchange platform
was launched last week by
Sumner Bays Union Trust.
The online project will help
connect businesses with the
community.
“It’s a web-based platform
which will also give the small
businesses an opportunity to
give workshops and promote
their products and services
through our platform,” said
Learning Exchange co-ordinator
Eve Wingerath.
She said it would help people
could reach out and learn different
skills from other people in
the community.
The platform was supposed to
be released in January but was
delayed due to Covid-19. Since
the lockdown, a lot of small
businesses had suffered both
financially and emotionally. It
also would help people to come
out of their isolation and feel
involved in a learning process.
About 50 people have volunteered
to teach their skills
through workshops and more
than 100 people have shown
interest to participate.
The current workshops would
include lessons on sewing, composting,
plant-powered kitchens,
and so forth.
Wingerath said these
courses would take place in
different locations, based on
the organiser’s preference,
and would be limited to 12
people. The restrictions around
attendance were due to the
concerns of the venue capacity
and Covid-19 limitations.
The trust had worked with
Bridge2Rocks Timebank so that
people could pay with time.
“You will get one credit per
hour of teaching and you could
use that credit to pay for some
other course you want to learn.
It’s a commerce of time,” said
Wingerath.
About $12,000 was invested
in the process of launching the
platform which included costs of
creation of a website, acquiring
Wingerath are
working to make
the Learning
platform a
teaching resources, databases,
and so forth.
She said the Learning Exchange
at present covered the
communities of Sumner, Redcliffs,
Heathcote, Mt Pleasant,
and Woolston.
“Other communities could
also approach and share what
they want to do with their ideas,
however that is something for
later,” Wingerath said.
recognition
• From page 1
Claudia was one of three New
Zealand students who won
awards in the litter less campaign
category, with entries related to
the topic of litter and waste.
Her photo, which was placed
in the photography 15-18 years
category, features her younger
sister, Sienna, collecting waste on
Sumner beach.
The “huge” sunrise
represented the start of a new
day and symbolised the start of
something new, or change.
“You can clearly see her silhouette
where she is eagerly dragging
the trash bin in order to make a
change. Small acts matter,’’ she
said.
“She’s a surfer from Sumner
who is protecting what she cares
about and ultimately fixing
something she didn’t cause.”
Sustainability was something
the student held close to her heart
as it determined the future of her
generation and beyond.
“I am proud of my Maori
heritage and I wanted this
photo to capture the powerful
essence of our land and water
as taonga (treasures), and our
spiritual connection to our land,
Rare artworks by Akaroa-born
ARTWORKS by avid adventurer
and Antarctic explorer Frank
Worsley sail into view on the
Akaroa Museum website this
month to mark the start of the
summer season on the ice.
In conjunction with
Christchurch’s Days of Ice
celebration, the new exhibition
– titled This Book Belongs to
Commander Frank Worsley–
reveals the prized pencil
drawings of the Akaroaborn
seaman, navigator and
Endurance hero.
Akaroa Museum director
Lynda Wallace believes it is
important to share the special
sketches – revealing Worsley’s
lifelong love of the sea – with a
wider audience online.
“Our collection of rare Worsley
drawings is both engaging
and revealing, taking us back to
the days when ships propelled
by wind and canvas carried men
on voyages around the world,”
Wallace said.
Worsley – the man responsible
for navigating tortuous seas
to save the members of Ernest
Shackleton’s 1914-17 imperial
trans-antarctic expedition –
shares images from his
Worsley, who was born in
1872 and died in 1943, steered a
lifeboat, the James Caird, across
1500km of wild sub-Antarctic
sea in 1916 to seek help after the
Endurance was crushed by pack
ice in October 1915, stranding
its crew.
Apart from his thirst for
adventure, Worsley also had a
lifelong admiration for clippers,
the three-mast merchant ships
designed for speed in the 19th
century.
“Not even the meanest man
Wallace describes Worsley as “a
“Even after his Antarctic
your hips high.
as far as you can. Make your left leg straight
and bend your right leg at the knee.
• Press the outer edge of your left foot down
into the floor and ground down firmly through
both feet. Lift your torso upright over your
hips. Raise your arms up to the sky.
Supermarket’s owner knows full
well the impact robberies can
have and she fears for her life
every day.
Her dairy on Worcester St,
Linwood, is one of the 11 most
robbed in Christchurch, latest
statistics show.
The dairy has been robbed
twice since 2017.
The owner, who does not want
to be identified, was not working
when the robberies happened.
But the staff member who was
robbed was so traumatised he
quit his job.
She said during the first one,
three men armed with a hammer
and a knife entered and took
about $8000 of cigarettes and
cash from the till.
During the second robbery, a
male staff member was hit with
a hammer. Luckily, he was not
injured but he was shaken by the
experience.
The owner said she experiences
threatening behaviour from
customers every day, including
verbal abuse and is scared for her
safety.
“They are, like, always threatening
us,” she said.
“They are very threatening
to whoever comes in. They are
very annoying and they are very
scary.”
Security has now been upped
at the dairy. A fog cannon and
second door have been installed
to impair robbers’ vision and
slow them down when they try
to enter.
A fog cannon fills stores up
with fog until eventually there is
no visibility for would-be thieves
to see what they want to steal.
These also create an opportunity
for shop attendants to move to
safety if necessary.
The owner has never had
to activate the fog cannon in
the two years since it was installed.
An Official Information Act
request by The Star shows what
dairies are on the most robbed
list since 2017.
Hagley Night ‘n Day, Lincoln
Rd Convenience Store and Night
‘n Day Woolston top the list with
three robberies each.
There have been 53 dairy
robberies in Christchurch since
2017.
Two people have received
serious injuries and 19 with
There were 65 weapons used
during these robberies, with the
most common being knives and
bats. Ten firearms were used.
These robberies resulted in 32
people being arrested.
The next most popular
Supporting women through hardship
• By Bea Gooding
A SENSE of belonging and
purpose has been the driving
force behind the success of a
women’s support group in the
last two decades.
The Women’s Social Support
Group at the Woolston Development
Project recently marked its
20th anniversary of nurturing the
lives of women across the city.
The group provides social
opportunities for women from
a diverse range of backgrounds,
including those facing unemployment,
mothers of children
with disabilities, or carers of sick
family members for long periods
of time.
WDP manager and facilitator
Bev Adams has been involved
with the group since its inception
and said its importance has
been highlighted now more than
ever due to Covid-19.
“The founding members
identified a concern that local
women were becoming more
isolated due to low income and
increasing health issues,” she said.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes
over the years, but isolation is
still an issue for women. Covid-19
showed how isolated people
actually were because they hadn’t
built those community connections
over time.”
The women’s group was
established in 2000 and started
with 10 members, but it has now
grown to more than 35.
Activities such as arts and
craft, games and bus outings
were on offer to enable women
MILESTONE: Woolston Development Project manager Bev Adams facilitates the many
outings and activities at the Women’s Social Support Group, which celebrates its
20th-anniversary this year.
to build positive relationships,
develop practical leisure skills
and increase awareness of other
opportunities city-wide.
Adams said the dynamic of
the group shifted over time
because members were able to
confide in each other around
issues such as domestic violence,
rather than attending just for the
activities.
This was particularly apparent
following the 2010 and 2011
earthquakes.
Said Adams: “Pre-earthquakes,
women came there to enjoy the
activities. When the earthquakes
hit we were closed for six weeks,
but they still depended on those
connections they had made especially
as many struggled with
losing their houses.
“The whole dynamic of the
group since then has changed.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
People are much more caring
and they never hesitate to check
in on each other.”
Many women readily accepted
the care and responsibility of
their families, whether it was
young children, ageing parents
or unwell partners.
Adams said this was often
to the detriment of their own
health and well-being, therefore
the group helped women take
some time out for themselves,
and develop lifelong friendships.
It impacted their lives due
to learning new skills such as
gardening, cooking, making
clothes or having a hobby, which
lifted self-esteem and confidence.
“Some of these women have
been working 24/7 to look after
someone, managing finances or
organising medical needs and
never think about what they want
or need,” she said.
“They become overtired and
depression is more apparent
because they’re eating, sleeping
and living for other people.
“Coming to a group like this
for two hours just provides some
respite and is a lifting of the spirits.
Having a laugh is incredibly
therapeutic.”
‘It’s nice to make new friends’
• From page 9
• By Bea Gooding
MAKING FRIENDS in a new
city can often be no easy feat,
but for Gloria Brown, joining a
successful women’s group was a
decision that paid off.
Brown is one of the last
remaining founding members
of the Women’s Social Support
Group.
The Woolston resident moved
to Christchurch from Timaru in
1992 and joined the WDP after
a spontaneous decision to give
it a go.
Said Brown: “I joined the
group because I didn’t know
many people when I moved
up here, and I was looking for
friends, a job and things to do.
I found a leaflet in my letterbox
about it and I ended up joining
that day.
“It’s great because there’s
always new members coming
through, so it’s nice to make
new friends. Some members
even come from the other side of
town.”
Many came and went over the
years, but now only two founding
members remained – Brown,
along with Patsy Kerr.
Joining in on the fun became
a weekly ritual for Brown, who
seldom misses a meeting.
Along with arts and crafts,
regular excursions to attractions
such as the Christchurch
Gondola, the Botanic Gardens or
punting on the Avon River were
activities she enjoyed the most.
The companionship and
lifelong friendships were why she
remained at the group for the
last two decades, especially the
support she felt when she lost her
home in the February 22, 2011,
RITUAL: Gloria
Brown was a
founding member
of the Women’s
Social Support
Group and has
Waterways rated ‘poor’
WATER QUALITY in most
waterways has remained
steady but the majority are
still ranked as ‘poor’, a new
city council report shows.
The council has published
its annual Christchurch
Surface Water Quality
Report, an analysis of
water quality data collected
throughout last year.
Council waterways
ecologist Dr Belinda
Margetts led the research,
and says water quality
in most Christchurch
waterways is unchanged
from previous years.
“There were some
improvements and some
declines in water quality at
certain sites, but overall the
quality is much the same as
we’ve seen previously,” said
Margetts.
But improving water
quality is a slow process,
she said, as Christchurch’s
waterways suffer from a
condition known as ‘urban
stream syndrome’.
“The main contaminants
in our waterways are from
waterfowl droppings, dog
poo and stormwater run-off
contaminated with metals
from cars and roofs, and
sediment.
“The contaminants of
most concern include
through The Groynes. PHOTO: NEWSLINE
nitrogen, phosphorus,
Escherichia coli (an
indicator of faecal
contamination that can
cause illness), and dissolved
zinc and copper.”
Waterways are monitored
at 42 sites across the district,
with more than 11,000
tests being conducted.
Of the samples tested,
20 per cent did not meet
quality guideline levels and
98 percent of sites did not
meet guideline levels for at
least one of the quality factors
measured.
After all the data had
been analysed, each monitoring
site was scored, with
most being ‘poor’. None
were ‘very good’ and none
were ‘very poor’.
“The catchment with the
best overall water quality
was the Ōtūkaikino
River catchment and the
worst was the Ōpawaho-
Heathcote River catchment,”
said Margetts.
Of all the sites monitored,
the site with the best score
was in the Pūharakekenui-
Styx River at Main North
Rd.
The site with the worst
score was in Curletts
Rd Stream, with the
next lowest being in the
Ōpawaho-Heathcote River
at Tunnel Rd, Haytons
Stream and the Ōpawaho-
Heathcote River at
Ferrymead Bridge.
READS
INSTORE!
The Reacher Guy
by heather Martin
Lee Child is the thriller writer responsible for countless international bestsellers - as well
as the iconic character of Jack Reacher. Yet despite being revered by millions of readers
around the globe, little is actually known about the enigmatic man behind the novels.
The Lee Child origin myth is a much-loved one: it sees the author springing, fully formed,
from the brow of Granada Television. But this is the first time that anyone has revealed
the Lee Child arc: from peaceful obscurity in the Yorkshire Dales to cult status as a literary
rockstar, through to backlash, the changing zeitgeist and intimations of retirement.
The Reacher Guy is an explosive and riveting biography of a much-loved and
mythologised author. In it, Heather Martin looks closely at where Child really sprang from.
Based on disarmingly frank personal conversations and years of correspondence with the
author, as well as privileged access to archival materials, it the nearest thing the world is
ever likely to get to the autobiography Lee Child does not intend to write.
Maiden Voyages
Women and the Golden Age of Transatlantic Travel
by sian evans
How the Golden Age of transatlantic travel between the wars transformed women’s
lives across all classes - a vivid portrait of life on-board the iconic ocean liners. Before
convenient air travel, transatlantic travel was the province of the great ocean liners
and never more so than in the glory days of the interwar years. It was an extraordinary
undertaking made by many women. Some travelled for leisure, some for work; others to
find a new life, marriage, to reinvent themselves or find new opportunities. Their stories
have remained largely untold - until now. Maiden Voyages is a fascinating portrait of
these women, and their lives on board magnificent ocean liners as they sailed between
the old and the new worlds. The ocean liner was a microcosm of contemporary society,
divided by class: from the luxury of the upper deck, playground for the rich and famous,
to the cramped conditions of steerage or third class travel. These iconic liners were filled
with women of all ages, classes and backgrounds: celebrities and refugees, migrants
and millionairesses, aristocrats and crew members.
Sam Bloom: Heartache & Birdsong
by Cameron Bloom samantha Bloom Bradley trevor
Greive
The follow-up to the ABIA award-winning, international bestselling sensation
Penguin Bloom - the miraculous tale of a baby magpie that helped save a young
mother and her family - is a homegrown and international bestseller; soon to
be a major Hollywood movie, starring Naomi Watts and Andrew Lincoln. Sam’s
personal message at the end of the book has resonated powerfully with readers
- where, pulling no punches, she writes about what it is really like to face life in
a wheelchair. In Sam Bloom, Sam tells her own story for the first time - how a
shy but determined Australian girl became a nurse and travelled across Africa.
How she fell in love with a like-minded free spirit, raised three boys and built
a life together on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. And then, in a single horrific
moment, how everything changed. Sam’s journey back from the edge of death
and the depths of despair is so much more than an account of overcoming adversity. Sam’s captivating true story - written
by close friend, New York Times bestselling author Bradley Trevor Greive, and featuring extraordinary photographs taken by
Sam’s husband, Cameron Bloom - is humbling, heartbreaking and uplifting in equal measure. A triumph of raw emotion and
incredible beauty, Sam Bloom: Heartache & Birdsong is a truly unforgettable book.
Think Like a Monk
The secret of how to harness the power of positivity and be happy
by Jay shetty
Jay Shetty, social media superstar and host of the #1 podcast ‘On Purpose’, distils the
timeless wisdom he learned as a practising monk into practical steps anyone can take
every day to live a less anxious, more meaningful life.
In this inspiring, empowering book, Shetty draws on his time as a monk in the Vedic
tradition to show us how we can clear the roadblocks to our potential and power. Drawing
on ancient wisdom and his own rich experiences in the ashram, Think Like a Monk reveals
how to overcome negative thoughts and habits, and access the calm and purpose that lie
within all of us. The lessons monks learn are profound but often abstract. Shetty transforms
them into advice and exercises we can all apply to reduce stress, improve focus, improve
relationships, identify our hidden abilities, increase self-discipline and give the gifts we find
in ourselves to the world. Shetty proves that everyone can – and should – think like a monk.
The Secret Life of the Savoy
and the D’Oyly Carte family
by olivia Williams
The story of the Savoy’s founders, through three generations and a hundred years of luxury
In 1889, Victorian impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte opened The Savoy, Britain’s first luxury
hotel. Allowing the rich to live like royalty, it attracted glamour, scandal and a cast of
eccentric characters, with the D’Oyly Carte family elevated to a unique vantage point on high
society.
The Secret Life of the Savoy tells their story through three generations: Richard (a showman
who made his fortune from the Gilbert and Sullivan operas), Rupert (who expanded the
D’Oyly Carte empire through two world wars and the roaring twenties), and Bridget (the
reluctant heiress and last of the family line).
In this, the first biography of the family, Olivia Williams revives their extroardinary cultural
legacy, told through the prism of their iconic hotel and its many distinguished guests.
Play rugby on your table top
• By Chris Barclay
WHILE ALL Blacks to club
rugby’s toilers are often urged to
play what’s in front of them, Zane
Thompson spent years refining
his game plan.
The board game fanatic spent
eight years toying with a project
to transplant the national sport
to a card and dice based game
where all the intricacies of
the code – even the ability to
determine the weather conditions
– are built in.
Although the goal is the same
as playing on grass – scoring tries
– three mini games: the scrum,
lineout and breakdown ensure
there is more to winning than a
lucky roll of the dice.
Usual tactical appreciation is
key while the sin bin, TMO and
astute use of the “cheat” card
can also influence the flow of a
match-up.
Thompson, 48, laid the
groundwork for Rugby – The
Game one morning after his son
Jacob’s match was rained off in
Christchurch.
“He made an off-the-cuff
comment: ‘It sucks there’s not
a rugby game’. I was like: ‘Let’s
make one’,” he said.
“It is a very different game now
to what it was. Originally I had 15
players lined out and it was quite
long and messy. It was dialed
back to get that fast game play
for a board rather than it being a
simulation.”
Now there are six positional slots
a side and a game of two halves
should take 40min for players 13
years and over. There is also a 7s
format planned for juniors.
Thompson developed an
interest in board games in the
1980s and it never wavered
in spite of the advent of video
consoles, computer games and
mobile phone game apps.
“As long as I can remember
I’ve liked the competitiveness of
board games,” he said.
“That started with all your
standard family games like
Snakes and Ladders and it grew
into Hero Quest, Space Crusade –
very old-school games.”
He then progressed to The
Lords of Hellas and Western
Legends before his focus turned
to his own contribution to a
growing global industry.
The project gathered
momentum when a Kickstarter
page launched last September
raised about $11,000, $1000 of
which was spent on a mould for
the ball.
The first 1500-box order
was produced in China and
is expected to be stocked by
Whitcoulls and other retailers
in the run-up to Christmas – a
victory of sorts because rugby
games can be a hard sell.
“Sports people probably aren’t
that keen on a board game and
most board gamers aren’t that
into sport,” he said.
New Zealand Rugby is playing
a waiting game before they
endorse the product, so for now
Thompson’s supporters like Korey
Waipouri and Grant Golding are
the ‘stars’ of this edition.
“We’ll look at that (NZR)
after we get some sales up and
hopefully we can negotiate to use
some of the players,” Thompson
said.
Lizards blow out budget
for council project
• By Louis Day
AN additional $611,000
of ratepayer money had to
be spent on a city council
project after endangered
lizards were discovered at a
council work site.
City council contractors
were working towards
transforming an old gravel
pit into a stormwater basin
to reduce flooding, link
two headwaters together
and create a green corridor
in the area when they came
across the endangered
lizards.
It was originally planned
to “spray and clear” the site
but once the lizards were
found contractors had to
begin to “scrape” the site
with a person working
in front of a digger, hand
capturing lizards that were
discovered.
Once the lizards were
captured, the site was redesigned
to provide a suitable
home for the endangered
reptiles.
This blew out the budget
of the project by $611,000
on Department of Conservation
approvals, construction
contract costs, staff
RELOCATION: About 2700 lizards had to be
rehomed at a cost of $611,000 to allow for
council works to go ahead. PHOTO: DOC
time, herpetologist and
habitat establishment costs.
The entire project is expected
to cost $4.8 million.
The location of the site
and type of lizard present
at it has been kept secret
to minimise the possibility
of the lizards being
poached.
“There have been a number
of incidences where locations
here in Canterbury
have been publicised and
animals have then been
found on the internet for
sale,” city council general
manager of city services
David Adamson said.
He said about 2700
lizards were captured and
relocated.
“Due to lizard’s dormant
nature in colder weather,
the lizard count was only
viable if the temperature
was over 19 deg C. The
weather therefore meant
that the trapping took
some time, which led to an
extension of the contract,
and associated costs for
this delay,” he said.
Adamson said all of New
Zealand’s indigenous lizards
are both endangered
and “absolutely protected”
under the Wildlife Act
meaning it is illegal to
cause habitat loss or
deliberately disturb native
lizards.
Cannabis factor in road deaths
• By Matt Slaughter
DRUGS HAVE been a factor in
just over 20 per cent of all road
deaths in Christchurch since
2017.
And cannabis has been
revealed as the predominant
drug in the crashes.
Latest figures obtained by Bay
Harbour News show of the 63
deaths on Christchurch roads
since 2017 13 involved drugs.
It comes as voters will decide
in 10 days whether to legalise
the recreational
use of cannabis
at the general
election.
Say Nope to
Dope’s national
spokesman
Aaron Ironside
Sandra
Murray
said it is difficult
to say if
cannabis has
as much of an effect on drivers
as alcohol. But it could be more
harmful because it stays in a
person’s system for longer, sometimes
weeks.
“Cannabis users are much
lower at evaluating how
impaired they are for driving.
They perceive, in fact, in some
cases they’re better drivers once
they’ve had some cannabis
but, in actual fact, you’re more
FATAL: Cannabis has been the most common drug found to be a factor in Christchurch
road deaths since 2017.
than two times more likely to
have an accident if you’re using
cannabis,” he said.
Alcohol was a factor in 13 of
the Christchurch road deaths.
The risk of legalising cannabis
is too high because current drug
testing measures can only show
if cannabis is in drivers’ systems,
not how much is in their systems,
said Ironside.
If cannabis is legalised, police
should introduce a limit for how
much drivers are allowed to have
in their systems, similar to what
is used for alcohol, he said.
But police are saying little
about what their strategy for
cannabis enforcement for drivers
will be post-election.
“It is inappropriate for police
to comment on any potential or
proposed legislation changes,” a
police spokeswoman said.
Make it Legal manager Sandra
Murray, a group campaigning
for the legalisation of cannabis,
said she understands why cannabis
is often found as a factor in
road fatalities because it can stay
in people’s systems for weeks.
But she said a stronger case
can be made for other drugs being
a bigger cause of road deaths.
“Alcohol, methamphetamine
and cocaine and prescription
drugs are the drugs that cause
most accidents,” Murray said.
“If somebody has taken one of
those drugs that is quite likely
to be related to an accident, but
they also happen to have cannabis
in their system from a joint
that they smoked three weeks
ago, then the statistics will show
that cannabis was in their system
but cannabis was not the causal
factor.”
Methamphetamine, MDMA,
opioids like pain killers, sedatives,
were also factors in road
deaths since 2017.
Drivers suspected by police
of having drugs in their system
undergo a compulsory impairment
test.
It involves shining a light is
shone in their eyes, they are
made to stand on one leg and
place one foot in front of the
other and walk in a straight line.
If they fail two or all of these
tests they are required to take
a blood test to show if they are
under the influence of drugs.
There have been 196 people
stopped by police and charged
with drug driving offences in
Christchurch since 2017, an
average of 5.5 offences a month.
Tributes flow after doctor’s sudden death
RESPECTED: Christchurch haematologist Dr Mark Smith
died suddenly on September 24.
• By Chris Barclay
CHRISTCHURCH’S medical
community is in mourning
alongside scores of former and
current patients cared for by
leading haematologist Dr Mark
Smith.
The 58-year-old, who died
suddenly from a medical event,
was farewelled on October 2,
though the tributes continue
to flow for the influential
haematology consultant at the
Canterbury District Health
Board.
Kim Shields Tupou
encapsulated the depth of
gratitude felt among families
touched by Smith’s empathy and
professionalism in a message she
wrote to him online.
“My father Joseph has been a
patient of yours since his initial
diagnoses of multiple myeloma
12 years ago. You have guided,
supported, been kind and
compassionate and used your
vast knowledge and expertise in
your treatment and management
of dad.
“When we were first told of his
prognosis, we were completely
devastated and we did not think
for one minute that we would be
blessed enough for him to beat so
many odds, have periods of being
well and for him to be still with
us 12 years later.
“In this time, because of you
and the wonderful staff that
support you, our family has had
so much fun, we have laughed,
travelled, cried, loved and made
so many beautiful memories to
treasure. I want to thank you for
making these blessings possible.”
Lisa Webber also wrote from
a patient’s perspective when she
added: “I feel so privileged to
have been Mark’s patient for over
a 10 year time span.
“He helped me significantly
during the identification of an
unexpected blood disorder, and
guided me safely throughout
three precious pregnancies, and
post natal recovery time.
“At all times, Mark was always
open, kind, accessible and
compassionate. I will always be
so grateful for his care, guidance
and patience.”
Smith, who died on September
24, started his haematology
training in Christchurch in 1991
with a particular interest in
bleeding and clotting.
He qualified as a specialist
in 1995 and soon after he was
appointed to his first consultant
post at and Guy’s and St Thomas’
hospital in London, where he
eventually became clinical
director before returning to
Christchurch in 2002.
Long-term colleague Peter
Ganley said Smith left an
enviable legacy and a massive
void.
“Just as blood flows throughout
every part of the body, no
part of health is untouched by
haematology. Mark’s mana
and influence has flowed far
beyond our department, into
all of medicine and surgery into
primary and secondary care,” he
said.
“When you work with
someone every day for many
years you will know exactly their
value. When something fell over,
when we had an earthquake,
when we had the atrocity at the
mosque, when Covid struck,
Mark, to paraphrase loosely,
could keep his head when
everyone about was losing
theirs.”
Karl Archibald, vice-president
of the Haemophilia Foundation
of New Zealand, was also a
patient of Smith, who was an
avid athlete.
“Clinics with Mark would be
patient-focused, followed by tales
of his recent running triumphs
or trips,” he said.
“As a strong and considered
clinical advocate in the national
and international bleeding
disorders community, Mark
leaves a legacy that has raised the
standard of care for all.”
Smith, who was planning to
run the Queenstown marathon
on November 21, is survived
by his wife Cathy and children
Torin and Zoe.

Tasty Bites
Have a lot of fun with filo pastry
FILO PASTRY is easy to use and
you will end up with a lovely
light, crisp pastry if you follow
these rules.
Work fairly quickly and if you
are called away while you are
rolling the parcels, cover the
unbuttered stack with a tea towel
to prevent it drying out.
If the pastry is very cold, it
will be more fragile and tend
to crumble, so give it 20min
to come to room temperature
before you open the packet.
Three Cheese and Chicken
Filos
Ingredients
500gm chicken tenderloins
(you need 10)
50gm cream cheese
120gm feta cheese
25gm parmesan cheese
pepper
2 sundried tomatoes in oil
100gm butter
10 sheets filo pastry
Directions
Remove the filo pastry from
the fridge and let it come to come
to room temperature.
Begin by cutting out the sinewy
strip from the tenderloins. Place
the tenderloins into a large frying
pan on a high heat and fry for a
minute or so on each side so that
they are half cooked. You may
need a little oil in the pan to prevent
them sticking.
Place the cream cheese into a
bowl and crumble over the feta.
Grate in the parmesan and mix
this all together thoroughly with
a fork. Season with pepper.
Dry the tomatoes on kitchen
paper and slice finely. Melt the
butter.
Have all of this ready before
you open the packet of filo pastry.
On a large clean dry work
surface, lay out the filo. Remove a
sheet and brush lightly with melted
butter. Lay another sheet over
the top and brush this as well.
Place two of the cooked tenderloins
at the edge closest to you
and add a fifth of the cheese mixture
and a few of the chopped
tomatoes. Place on another tenderloin
and begin to roll them up
in the filo.
Fold in the sides and finish
rolling so that you end up with
a tidy parcel. Brush lightly but
thoroughly with butter and lay
on a baking sheet.
Continue in this way until all
the chicken and filling has been
used. You should have five parcels.
At this stage, you can cover
them and store them in the
fridge for up to 24 hours. They
can also be frozen for later cooking.
Be sure to cover them well
and as the pastry is quite fragile
when frozen. It is a good idea to
place them in a solid container.
Bake in a 200 deg C oven for
10-12min.
Keep an eye on them as they
will burst if they are left in too
long.
Mushroom strudel
Ingredients
25gm butter
1 small onion
250gm mushrooms
150gm cream cheese
100gm sour cream
salt and pepper to taste
75gm butter
filo pastry
Directions
Finely chop the onion and put
it in a frying pan with the first
measure of butter. Cook over a
medium heat until the onion is
soft but not coloured.
Rinse and trim the mushrooms
and slice finely. Add to the onion
and turn up the heat. Cook for
around 5min until the mushrooms
are starting to brown up.
Remove from the heat and add
the cream cheese. Let it sit in the
hot pan to melt a little before
stirring through. Stir in the sour
cream and a little salt and pepper.
Don’t mix it too much or you will
end up with a very unattractive
grey mixture.
Melt the second measure of
butter.
Lay out the filo pastry on a
clean, dry work surface. Take a
sheet off the top and brush with
melted butter. Lay a second sheet
over the top and brush this one
as well.
Fold your pastry into a rectangle
and brush again. Lightly mark
the rectangle into thirds, lengthways.
Place a large tablespoonful
of the mushroom filling just
above the centre line in the first
third of your pastry, then fold to
form a triangle. Keep folding in
triangles, tucking it quite tight so
there are no gaps at the corners.
Fold the end under neatly.
Continue in this way until all
the filling has been used. Brush
the tops of the triangles with butter
and place on an oven tray. As
with the previous recipe, they can
now be refrigerated for a day or
frozen for later use.
Bake at 200 deg C for 8min,
being careful not to over cook
them or the filling will burst out.
Christchurch Heritage Festival
tour of the home of crime fiction
queen Dame Ngaio Marsh to
mark the 125th anniversary of
the author’s birth.
Born in Christchurch in 1895,
Marsh died in 1982, aged 86.
Nestled in a quiet corner of
Cashmere, the weatherboard
house – designed by leading
local architect Samuel Hurst
Seager – was home to the awardwinning
writer for 76 years, with
the family among the first to
settle in the area.
Today visitors can wander
back in time, with the interior –
packed with Marsh’s furniture,
family treasures, books, awards
and art – offering a unique
narrative.
The Heritage Festival tour,
WRITING HOME: Take a tour of Ngaio Marsh House as part of the Christchurch Heritage
Festival.
as a writer, director and lifelong
painter.
Ngaio Marsh House and
Heritage Trust spokeswoman
Jessica Petersen believes the
house “enriches the national
cultural heritage of New
Zealand”.
“While the house has been
enlarged over the years, it is
authentically presented, much as
Dame Ngaio lived in it,” Petersen
says.
“The table is set with Dame
Ngaio’s china, and the dining
room and sitting room drapes
are made from fabric chosen by
Dame Ngaio on her travels.
“There is also memorabilia
from her many Shakespearean
productions, her writing desk,
and much lauded Long Room.”
Petersen says the writer’s
“whodunnit career began on a
cold, wet weekend in London in
1931”.
“She was bored and sat down
to write what would become her
first Roderick Alleyn novel, A
Man Lay Dead.
“Over 50 years, she wrote 32
classic English detective novels,
even becoming more popular
than her contemporary, Agatha
Christie, at one stage.”
Ngaio Marsh House is a
Category 1 Historic Place,
with a registered heritage
garden.
The house’s designer was
also responsible for wellknown
World War I memorials
Museum Unveils Concept Designs
for Proposed Redevelopment
Canterbury Museum has released concept designs for its $195 million
proposed redevelopment, which celebrate and reveal more of the
Museum’s heritage buildings, provide twenty-first century visitor facilities
and meet the exhibition and storage needs of a modern museum.
Canterbury Museum Director Anthony
Wright says that the Museum has
listened very carefully to the feedback it
has received so far.
He says that Athfield Architects
have captured all of the feedback in
the proposed concept designs, while
maintaining the much-loved intimate
feel of the Museum. “The design
increases the sense of discovery, surprise
and the feeling of never being quite sure
of what’s around the corner. However the
way people move through the Museum
will definitely be improved.
“We will be bringing back the blue
whale skeleton has not been on public
display for 26 years. The 26.5 metre
skeleton will be a focal point in the
Museum, suspended in a new central
full-height glass roofed atrium,” says Mr
Wright. “We are also looking forward to
developing a new, expanded Antarctic
exhibition.”
Canterbury Museum Chair David
Ayers says, “The brief we provided
Athfield Architects was quite
challenging.”
“We want the proposed redevelopment
to enhance and celebrate our history by
unveiling heritage fabric that has been
hidden for many years. The concepts
have more than met our expectations
and we’re looking forward to hearing
what the Canterbury community thinks.”
Welcoming Space: The Museum is
working closely with Ngāi Tūāhuriri on
the concept designs. Puamiria Parata-
Goodall, Kaiurungi (Chair) of the
Museum’s Ōhākī o Ngā Tīpuna says.
“At the heart of the new Museum is a
new space called Araiteuru, housed in
the central full-height atrium. Araiteuru
celebrates the importance of how we
welcome people to the Museum and this
is where we will tell the story of mana
whenua and tangata whenua through
a mix of contemporary and traditional
methods.”
Araiteuru will be home to a new
contemporary whare – a ceremonial and
educational space. The Whare Whakairo
(carved meeting house) Hau Te Ananui
O Tangaroa, a taonga that hasn’t been on
display for 64 years, will also hold pride
of place in Araiteuru.
The concept designs propose that
the walls on the northern sides of the
original Benjamin Mountfort-designed
buildings will be revealed and original
exterior elements, including the flèche
(slender roof-top spire) on the Rolleston
Avenue façade, will be reinstated.
A new three-storey building, within
the height limits of the Rolleston Avenue
roof line, would wrap around the north
side of the heritage buildings, exposing
their heritage walls to public view. The
building would include mezzanine floors,
multifunctional spaces such as a new
lecture theatre and increased space for
permanent and temporary exhibitions.
Base isolation would be added across the
site to protect the heritage buildings and
the collections, and to bring the site up to
100% of Building Code. New collection
storage would be created as part of this.
A key element of the concept design
is a second Rolleston Avenue entrance.
The current entry to the Museum is too
small to be the only entrance, and with
more than 750,000 visitors a year and
rising, an additional entrance will reduce
congestion and improve the flow of
visitors into the building. This entry will
also house a cafe with sidewalk seating.
Heritage architecture expert Jim
Gard’ner says the concept design for the
Rolleston Avenue facade respects and
celebrates the Gothic Revival language
of Benjamin Mountfort. “The additions
to the Museum and planned central
circulation patterns are informed by
Mountfort’s original unrealised plans and
ideas for the extension of the Museum.
“The proposed additional entrance
on Rolleston Avenue will have three
openings into a covered portico. This
draws on the typical tripartite form
commonly found in Gothic Revival
architecture, including the 1878 porch of
the existing entrance to the Museum, key
entrances within the Arts Centre, and
the porch of Christ Church Cathedral,”
says Mr Gard’ner.
Floor to ceiling glass will be added to
part of two floors of the Roger Duff Wing
which will house a split-level family
cafe alongside Discovery, the Museum’s
natural history centre for children.
You can see the concept designs and
give feedback at the Museum or online
at www.canterburymuseum.com.
Feedback on the concept designs closes
on 23 October.

Waterfront Oasis – As Is, Where Is
43 Beachville Road, Redcliffs 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, 1 car garaging
Occupying a prime waterfront position and offering plentiful possibilities,
this property is defined by potential and is presented to the market on an ‘as
is, where is’ basis.
The location is outstanding, capturing sunshine and sensational views
across the water from a supreme Redcliffs setting on the doorstep of the
coastal pathway. The departing vendor has comfortably resided at this
property for the past five years. It’s been deemed repairable and has the
ability to be insured, it could be land banked while you decide the ultimate
utilisation of the site, or live in and enjoy for many more years to come.
A significant extension was carried out in the 2000s which transformed
the home into a contemporary beach pad that contains double glazing, a
modern kitchen and tiled bathrooms.
While classic style and well-specified finishes infuse the interior, there is
undeniable scope to modernise further throughout.
There are two living areas and a total of three bedrooms, two of which
enjoy ensuite access while the spacious master suite also boasts a walk-in
wardrobe.
Entertainment and relaxation both indoors and out are catered to superbly
at each end of the property. A deck at the front of the home maximises the
unobstructed estuary outlook and seamlessly extends through bi-fold doors
off the formal lounge. Another deck at the rear interacts effortlessly with
the open plan living zone and master bedroom and overlooks the beautifully
landscaped garden that basks in privacy and sunshine.
Completing the package is a single garage and adjoining spacious shed with
tandem access that provide brilliant storage options.
Situated within a stroll of the beach, Redcliffs Village and in-zone for
Redcliffs School, this property offers an effortless lifestyle in a favoured
coastal location. With options aplenty, it’s sure to attract the interest of
many. Contact Paula or Simon for more information and an extensive
Clifton Treasure – As Is, Where Is
65a Clifton Terrace, Sumner
3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 3 living, 1 off street park
Offered to the market for the very first time and presented on an ‘as is,
where is’ basis, this heavenly haven was lovingly constructed from the
ground up by the vendors and is reluctantly farewelled following a lengthy
tenure to accommodate a move out of town. Enjoying premium positioning
on the prestigious lower slopes of Clifton Hill, this property is nestled within
the landscape and captures exceptional views over Sumner Beach. The
home’s timber framework is enduring and provides a perfect platform for
modernization and enhancement opportunities.
The classically designed home offers ample space and features multiple living
zones that effortlessly flow outdoors. Timeless interior details contribute
traditional appeal and include exposed ceiling beams, timber floors and
a superb mezzanine complete with a cathedral ceiling. Three bedrooms
provide accommodation, with two bathrooms servicing the household.
During their tenure, the vendors have basked in the tranquillity afforded by
the established garden and quiet surroundings. Decking, as well as a pebbled
courtyard, provide you with numerous settings where you can admire the
outlook and indulge in alfresco relaxation. Easy access is another advantage
of this hillside abode, with a parking space also on offer. Contact Paula or
Simon for more information.
Pristine and Picturesque
246 Cannon Hill Crescent, Mt Pleasant
4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 car garaging, 1 car port
Sensational space, an extraordinary outlook and sophisticated style come
together most magnificently at this superbly enhanced four-bedroom
abode that overlooks the water from the Mt Pleasant hillside. A meticulous
renovation was carried out by John Garlick Builders in 2015, with the
property presenting in like new condition. It occupies a significant 1022sqm
section and boasts enough flat lawn to introduce a swimming pool.
Easy-care elegance is delivered by high-end materials that are showcased
throughout; from the cedar and Supercrete cladding to the timber floors,
tiled bathrooms and sleek presentation in the attractive kitchen. Designed
with an emphasis on laid-back living; the two-level layout includes multiple
entertaining spaces, including an open-plan zone, formal lounge and
spacious balcony, all of which are set upon the top floor to maximise the
spectacular vantage point. Of the four bedrooms, the master is a relaxing
retreat, positioned on the lower level and equipped with a tiled ensuite,
walk-in wardrobe and enjoying access out to a private patio.
Effortless drive-on access and level grounds with established landscaping is
an exceptional advantage for any home but is a rarity and definite bonus on
the hill. The spacious section also contains an established vegetable garden,
covered parking area and ample-off street space. Don’t delay;
this won’t stay. Call Paula or Simon for more information.
