THE CONTENTIOUS on-ramp 

near Halswell Junction Rd was 

never considered in the original 

Southern Motorway design plan, 

it can be revealed. 

The on-ramp continues to draw 

criticism from Selwyn Times readers 

who say trying to get across to 

it is difficult and at times dangerous. 

The New Zealand Transport 

Agency says the on-ramp was 

added to the design after a 

request by the Halswell-Hornby- 

Riccarton Community Board, 

and industry in the area. 

But the community board 

chairman Mike Mora agrees 

with other motorists the on-ramp 

design is putting motorists at 

risk. 

“You’ve got to change lanes 

two or three times sometimes to 

navigate it, and it just seems a bit 

over-complicated. Every move 

can have an adverse effect or put 

people at risk,” he told the Selwyn 

Times.

Shape of district’s housing could change 


HIGHER DENSITY housing 

developments could be built 

in Selwyn’s town centres if the 

council adopts the draft district 

plan. 

Housing density in the 

district’s outer, more green areas 

will be reduced to ensure land is 

retained for rural production if 

the plan is approved. 

The district council released 

the draft plan last week and a 

public consultation period has 

now started for people to make 

submissions with their feedback 

on the plan. 

The plan was last reviewed 10 

years ago. 

It is expected that the new 

plan will be in place by the end 

of 2022. 

Meanwhile, a resource 

consent application has been 

received for the construction of 

a new 41 house subdivision in 

Lincoln. 

District council resource consents 

team leader Rosie Flynn 

said if approved, the houses will 

be built on vacant land on Vernon 

Drive near the intersection 

with Ormond St. 

This land is considered appropriate 

for this development 

because it lies close to a commercial 

area. 

Flynn said the location of 

the subdivision will also be appropriate 

because it is close to 

Lincoln University. 

“This application is still being 

considered by our consenting 

team. This was considered 

appropriate due to its location 

in close proximity to the commercial 

area and the university,” 

she said.

NZTA has previously told 

Selwyn Times there is an “issue” 

with the on-ramp but stopped 

short of saying it was dangerous. 

Asked if the issues with the onramp 

were the result of a design 

flaw, NZTA principal project 

manager Geoff Griffiths said: 

“We have to work within the 

physical constraints of the site. 

“While it would obviously be 

different if we had a blank sheet 

and could separate the motorway 

and roundabout with more 

distance, we have to work with 

what we have and produce the 

best design given the constraints 

of the site and the need to make 

the new motorway accessible for 

the nearby industrial area, commuters 

from Prebbleton and the 

surrounding area.” 

The on-ramp was requested 

by the community board about 

two months before the $195 

million stage 2 of the Southern 

Motorway project began in 2016. 

Mora said the community 

board wanted an on-ramp so 

heavy vehicles coming from 

industry in the Sockburn and 

Hornby area could access the 

motorway to destinations like

of people using the motorway 

so that they didn’t put undue 

burden on the more-residential 

streets.” 

But what had been designed 

was an on-ramp and roundabout 

which was difficult to navigate, 

he said. 

NZTA did not answer a question 

from Selwyn Times what the 

plan had been in the original design 

for access north to Christchurch 

from Halswell Junction Rd 

to the motorway. 

Mora also said he was puzzled 

by NZTA advice that motorists 

who were concerned about safety 

when turning left from Springs 

Rd into the Halswell Junction 

Rd roundabout should only do 

so when both lanes were clear of 

traffic. 

“That would hold up traffic 

forever. That’s not what roundabouts 

are for,” he said. 

NZTA did not answer questions 

put by Selwyn Times about 

why motorists are being told to 

wait for both lanes to be clear 

of traffic and if signage will be 

installed to tell drivers to wait for 

both lanes to clear. 

Springs Ward councillor 

and Selwyn district deputy 

mayor Malcolm Lyall said the 

roundabout and on-ramp had 

got slightly safer than when it 

first opened but he said it is still 

causing issues for him and other 

motorists.

LABOUR’S SELWYN candidate 

Reuben Davidson believes the 

district council may have missed 

out on $13.5 million in funding 

for shovel-ready roading projects 

because it did not specify how 

many jobs it 

would create.

funding, was declined. 

THe application was for a 

roading package that would 

bring forward a range of 

pavement renewals that had been 

deferred as well as the upgrade 

of 125km of road in areas across 

the district. 

However, it did not state how 

many people would be employed 

as a result of the projects. 

Said Davidson: “Part of 

Labour’s five-point plan is 

investing in people and creating 

jobs, this will have been a major 

consideration in selecting which 

shovel-ready projects we were 

able to support.” 

National’s Selwyn candidate 

Nicola Grigg said the electorate 

missing out on $13.5 million of 

shovel-ready roading projects is 

a big blow. 

Grigg said the projects applied 


for by the district council are 

crucial and would have created 

much-needed jobs lost because 

of Covid-19. 

“Selwyn itself, from what I 

understand, we’ve had 2000 job 

loses here already, we’ve had 

applicants for working benefits

funding $60m for the two-lane 

overbridge from Rolleston Drive 

to Hoskyns Rd and $34m for rural 

intersection improvements in the 

area including West Melton.”

sudden death of Canterbury doctor

CANTERBURY’S medical 

community is in mourning 

alongside scores of former and 

current patients cared for by 

leading haematologist Dr Mark 

Smith. 

The 58-year-old, who died 

suddenly from a medical event, 

was farewelled on October 2, 

though the tributes continue 

to flow for the influential 

haematology consultant at the 

Canterbury District Health 

Board. 

Kim Shields Tupou 

encapsulated the depth of 

gratitude felt among families 

touched by Smith’s empathy and 

professionalism in a message she 

wrote to him online. 

“My father Joseph has been a 

patient of yours since his initial 

diagnoses of multiple myeloma 

12 years ago. You have guided, 

supported, been kind and 

compassionate and used your 

vast knowledge and expertise in 

your treatment and management 

of dad. 

“When we were first told of his 

prognosis, we were completely 

devastated and we did not think

for one minute that we would be 

blessed enough for him to beat 

so many odds, have periods of 

being well and for him to be still 

with us 12 years later. 

“In this time, because of you 

and the wonderful staff that 

support you, our family has had 

so much fun, we have laughed, 

travelled, cried, loved and made 

so many beautiful memories to 

treasure. I want to thank you for 

making these blessings possible.” 

Lisa Webber also wrote from 

a patient’s perspective when she 

added: “I feel so privileged to 

have been Mark’s patient for over 

a 10 year time span. 

“He helped me significantly 

during the identification of an 

unexpected blood disorder, and 

guided me safely throughout 

three precious pregnancies, and 

post natal recovery time. 

“At all times, Mark was always 

open, kind, accessible and 

compassionate. I will always be 

so grateful for his care, guidance 

and patience.” 

Smith, who died on September 

24, started his haematology 

training in Christchurch in 1991 

with a particular interest in 

bleeding and clotting. 

He qualified as a specialist 

in 1995 and soon after he was 

appointed to his first consultant 

post at and Guy’s and St Thomas’ 

hospital in London, where he 

eventually became clinical 

director before returning to 

Christchurch in 2002. 

Long-term colleague Peter 

Ganley said Smith left an 

enviable legacy and a massive 

void. 

“Just as blood flows 

throughout every part of the 

body, no part of health is 

untouched by haematology. 

Mark’s mana and influence 

has flowed far beyond our 

department, into all of medicine 

and surgery into primary and 

secondary care,” he said. 

“When you work with 

someone every day for many 

years you will know exactly their 

value. When something fell over, 

when we had an earthquake, 

when we had the atrocity at the 

mosque, when Covid struck, 

Mark, to paraphrase loosely, 

could keep his head when 

everyone about was losing 

theirs.” 

Karl Archibald, vice-president 

of the Haemophilia Foundation 

of New Zealand, was also a 

patient of Smith, who was an 

avid athlete. 

“Clinics with Mark would be 

patient-focused, followed by tales 

of his recent running triumphs 

or trips,” he said. 

“As a strong and considered 

clinical advocate in the national 

and international bleeding 

disorders community, Mark 

leaves a legacy that has raised the 

standard of care for all.” 

Smith, who was planning to 

run the Queenstown marathon 

on November 21, is survived 

by his wife Cathy and children

THE LEESTON Volunteer Fire 

Brigade chief has stepped down 

from his role. 

Lloyd Clausen, who has been 

firefighting at the station for 51 

years, and chief for five-anda-half, 

will now move into an 

operational support role for the 

brigade. 

He said he still plans on fighting 

fires when needed, as well 

as being a mentor for fellow 

members. 

He said his new role will give 

him more time to spend with his 

family, especially his three grandchildren. 

He will also now be able 

to focus on his role as a volunteer 

at Leeston learners’ pool. 

“I’ve got probably more time 

with the grandkids actually, to be 

fair. So that’s probably a biggie,’’ 

Clausen said. 

“We’ve got a wee learners’ 

pool out in Leeston. I’ve got four 

helpers and we run that over the 

summer months. 

“It’s so important that kids get 

the chance to learn to swim and 

get comfortable in the water.” 

Clausen will also continue his 

administration role organising 

property maintenance for St 

John facilities in Leeston and 

Rolleston. 

Clausen began firefighting in 

1969 at the age of 15 and worked 

his way up the ranks from station 

officer, deputy, and then to 

chief fire officer. 

Some of his most memorable 

jobs over the years were a fire at 

a Leeston farm on Waitangi Day 

1990 that went on for more than 

a month. The fire did not spread 

to any properties thanks to the 

firefighting effort. 

He also assisted in Christchurch 

after the earthquakes, 

driving a tanker around and supplying 

water to firefighters. 

“We took a lot of chimneys 

down and stuff like that, assisted 

people were we could.

“We had flooding in Leeston in 

2013 where we probably responded 

to about 80 calls in a 24-hour 

period,” he said. 

Clausen said his reason for 

stepping down was to give other 

people in the brigade a chance. 

“You like doing the job but 

you know its time to step aside 

and let the younger guys come 

through that’s what it’s all about. 

You don’t want the old codgers 

running the outfit. 

“I’ve been thinking about it for 

a while and by the time it came 

down to it, it was time. 

“It’s about keeping the brigade

alive and passing the torch along. 

It revitalises the brigade and 

gives purpose to the other guys,” 

he said 

Greg Wheeler, former deputy 

chief fire officer, will take over. 

Wheeler has 30 years of service 

with Fire and Emergency NZ 

and Matt Walker who was the 

senior station senior officer will 

move up to the deputy position. 

Said Clausen: “Greg is a really 

great organiser with awesome 

team management skills. We’re 

always improving. when the new 

team take over they’ll improve 

on the previous team.”

Wheeler, who began 

in his new role last week, 

has been in the brigade 

for 32 years and was 

deputy fire chief before 

taking over from Clausen. 

He has worked closely 

alongside Clausen over 

the years and aims to 

be as much of a role 

model for other brigade 

members as he has been. 

“It’s really about moving 

with our everchanging 

service and empowering 

guys and girls in our 

brigade to take a more 

hands-on role. 

“What I'm trying to 

achieve, I suppose, is to 

be quite communityfocused 

and be maybe

AS THIS IS my last column as 

MP for Selwyn, I would like to 

firstly acknowledge Selwyn’s 

communities and thank you all 

for the support you have shown 

me during the past 12 years. 

It has been my privilege to work 

with you to get things done in 

our region and to represent your 

views in Parliament. 

I have enjoyed witnessing the 

continuing success of Selwyn in 

spite of the challenges we have 

faced and have been a strong 

advocate for the region securing 

the necessary infrastructure to 

match our growth. 

When I was first elected as 

MP in 2008, Rolleston had 

just one school, and there are 

now five primary schools and 

one high school in Rolleston 

alone. Halswell and Lincoln 

also have new primary schools 

and many other schools around 

our region have benefited from 

new classrooms and other 

facilities. 

During my time in Parliament 

I have been fortunate to have 

held a variety of ministerial 

portfolios which have given me 

the opportunity to change the 

system and make a difference 

to the lives of New Zealanders. 

As Justice Minister I am most 

proud of the work I started with 

my colleague Anne Tolley around 

tackling our country’s shameful 

rates of family violence. 

The changes we put in place 

included developing a new 

delivery model for family violence 

to get agencies to work together. 

The integrated safety response 

pilots we set up are already 

making a difference and those 

working in the sector have told 

me that they believe many lives 

have been saved as a result of this 

new way of working. 

I believe that long-term 

thinking and planning is 

vital when it comes to our 

infrastructure needs. And as 

Communications Minister, I 

was fortunate to play a central 

role in providing better internet 

and mobile connectivity for 

our communities through 

our transformative ultra-fast 

broadband, rural broadband

initiative and mobile blackspot 

programmes. 

The value of these programmes 

has been well illustrated during 

the Covid-19 lockdowns when 

many people were able to 

continue to work and study from

Although the Parliamentary 

Library tells me that I was

or carriage of 74 pieces of 

legislation, there are still more 

things I would have liked to 

achieve. 

However, in the end the only 

measure that counts is the 

difference that our actions make 

for people and it is pleasing to 

know that as the local MP I have 

managed to help many people 

tackle difficult issues and have 

their voices heard. 

Thank you again Selwyn for the 

past 12 years and best wishes for 

the future.

rear of the building. 

The hall is popular and 

generates a number of bookings. 

Some days it is used by four or 

five different groups.

Financial hit from 

pandemic forces career change 


PAUL AND Sue Robinson’s 

Rolleston travel agency business 

has been slammed by the 

financial impacts of Covid-19. 

Profits are down 98 per cent 

from what they would be during 

a usual year at Helloworld Travel 

Rolleston, which the husband 

and wife own. 

Faced with the real possibility 

of having to close, they had a 

choice – give in to adversity, or 

find a new way to make ends 

meet. 

They chose the latter and have 

just had the soft opening for 

their new business RE/MAX 

Eclipse Realty Rolleston on 

Rolleston Drive. 

The Robinsons have previous 

real estate experience and will be 

joined by their daughter Brooke 

Robinson, who is retraining as a 

real estate agent, after doing her 

previous training in hospitality 

and tourism. 

Fellow real estate agent Murray 

Irvine will complete the team 

until they’re in a position to hire 

more staff. 

Said Sue: “I think that out of 

adversity there are two things 

that happen, people either look 

for blame or look to blame, or 

they go and sort of get on with 

it, and Paul and I just thought 

let’s just do it and get on with 

it.” 

Sue said the real estate office 

will be in the same building as

which will also remain open,

WORK IS under way on stage 

3 of the Leeston stormwater 

bypass, replacing the High St 

culverts and connecting these to 

Volkman Drain. 

To do this work, Station St 

and Leeston Rd will be closed at 

times around the Volkman Rd 

and High St intersections. Station 

St is due to be closed from 

Friday until November 11 and 

Leeston Rd is due to be closed 

from November 12 to December 

15. 

When Station St is closed the 

detour will take traffic down 

Cunningham St back to Station 

St. Because Station St is the truck 

bypass into Leeston, residents 

should expect increased truck 

movements during this time. 

The works are part of a longterm 

project to upgrade the 

stormwater network and reduce 

the risk of flooding in Leeston. 

Detailed design work for stage 

4, connecting the Leeston creek 

with the flood bypass channel is 

under way. The district council 

is making progress to begin 

construction in February 2021.

$12,000 plan to restore 

historic whale pots 

RELICS OF Akaroa’s 

whaling days will be restored 

after decades of damage 

often caused by children 

clambering in and out of the 

large cast-iron try pots on the 

foreshore. 

A $12,000 conservation 

project will start soon, with 

the three pots on Beach Rd to 

be carefully prised from their 

broken brickwork setting and 

then removed for intensive 

restoration. 

The triple try pots – dating 

back to the early 1800s – 

have gradually deteriorated 

in the face of the corrosive 

sea environment and their 

popularity with hands-on 

young visitors to Beach 

Rd. Whalers used the pots 

– which would sit on ship 

decks or in whaling stations 

dotted on the foreshore 

around New Zealand from the 

1830s – to boil down whale 

blubber for use in lamps and 

soap. The pots were usually 

organised in a “nest”, with 

a fire lit underneath. The 

shore-whaling era on Banks 

Peninsula ended about 1850. 

All three pots came from 

local whaling stations, with 

the centre pot – created by 

the Coalbrookdale foundry in 

Shropshire, England – moved 

to the township from nearby 

Peraki Bay. The other two pots 

probably came from Whakamoa 

Bay. 

The pots have rusted and 

pitted, requiring delicate conservation 

work that does not 

lessen the heritage value of the 

original structures. They will 

be carefully cleaned and the 

corrosion will be treated at a 

conservator’s workshop, with 

a blend of natural oils. 

Along with the pots, preparations 

are also under way to 

remove and restore the nearby 

Britomart Cannon. The 

timber sections of the carriage 

require extensive repairs. 

The Lieutenant Governor 

of New Zealand, Captain 

William Hobson, sent a ship, 

the Britomart, to Akaroa 

in 1840 to establish British 

authority before the arrival 

of the French. While the 

1808 Kinman cannon on the 

Akaroa foreshore is not from 

the ship, it is very similar. 

It came to New Zealand for 

display at the 1906-1907 

International Exhibition in 

Christchurch following a 

request from Akaroa mayor 

Etienne Le Lievre. 

The cannon has been at its 

present site since 1908.

Lachie’s loud way to be heard 

LACHIE BARTLETT vividly 

remembers the moment his 

cochlear implant was switched on 

for the first time when he was an 

eight-year-old. 

“My family was behind the 

one-way mirror that looked into 

the room,” said Bartlett, who is 

profoundly deaf. 

“I remember Mum saying: ‘Hi 

Lachie’ from the other side of the 

glass. I smiled immediately. The 

next sound I heard was the crying 

of my nana and Mum.” 

That was 14 years ago. 

Bartlett, now 23, has since 

graduated with a law degree from 

Canterbury University and took up 

an exchange opportunity to study 

at the University of Nottingham 

in the United Kingdom. He now 

works in Wellington. 

His family lives in Prebbleton. 

Bartlett, and thousands of other 

adults and children with cochlear 

implants, are the focus of loud shirt 

day 2020 – a national fundraising 

event and awareness campaign on 

October 23. 

New Zealanders are encouraged 

to dress up in their brightest outfits 

and hold fundraising events at 

workplaces, homes and schools 

throughout the country. 

Loud shirt day is the annual appeal 

of The Hearing House and the 

Southern Cochlear Implant Programme 

– the only two charities in 

New Zealand dedicated to helping 

children and adults with a cochlear 

implant learn to listen and speak. 

Bartlett’s hearing loss was 

diagnosed when he was 18-monthsold. 

He lost his hearing completely 

when he was eight, mid-way 

through playing a game of tennis. 

“I remember falling over at the 

tennis courts and being disorientated, 

and my hearing aids just 

refused to work. The sudden nature 

of my hearing loss was incredibly 

scary for me and my family,” Bartlett 

said. 

“I became a recluse. I wouldn’t 

say much, I preferred to be alone at 

home and I did not enjoy school. 

The loss of my hearing crippled 

my confidence and shackled my 

ability to continue developing relationships 

with those around me,” 

Bartlett said. 

The cochlear implant has enabled 

him to reach his full potential. 

“Thanks to my cochlear implant, 

I was able to travel halfway around 

the world studying and doing my 

OE like so many other Kiwis before 

me. I now have the ability to choose 

whatever path I want to take in 

life.” 

Surgery and the subsequent 

switch-on is only one part of the 

cochlear implant process. Patients 

need to learn how to use the 

technology and interpret the new 

sounds through ongoing audiology 

and speech and language therapy. 

“The switch-on is significant, but 

it’s just the first step in a marathon,” 

said Bartlett. 

“The ongoing rehabilitation and 

support from organisations like 

SCIP and THH are equally important 

but sadly don’t get the same 

amount of attention. 

“The cochlear implant is like getting 

your first car, something that 

has endless potential to take you 

anywhere, but if you are not empowered 

to be able to use it you’ll 

just stay stuck in the drive.” 

Bartlett regularly participates in 

loud shirt day, and encourages others 

to do the same. 

“The funds raised by loud shirt 

day helped me and will help children 

and adults in the future to 

focus on their abilities – enabling 

them to view their disability as an 

opportunity, rather than a burden.

Support needed to repair historic cottage 


TIPTREE COTTAGE is a rare 

colonial cob farmhouse dealing 

with a familiar predicament, as 

the Yaldhurst museum faces an 

uncertain future for the third 

time since its construction 

around 1862. 

One of the oldest surviving 

buildings in Canterbury, the 

category one heritage listed cottage 

needs $155,000 to complete 

earthquake-related repairs 

almost a decade after Tiptree 

sustained structural damage. 

Most of the upgrade has been 

completed through support from 

the Christchurch City Council, 

Heritage New Zealand and private 

benefactors. 

But finance is still required to 

mend several major cracks in the 

cob before Tiptree’s antiquated 

architecture can be accessed by 

the public for the first time since 

2010. 

Tiptree Cottage trustee Kate 

McLeod said Heritage New Zealand 

will stump up 50 per cent of 

the amount providing trustees 

can source the remainder so cob 

specialist Mike Jackson can complete 

work on walls made from a 

mixture of straw, clay and water. 

McLeod thought the use of 

cob was possibly dictated by the 

lack of timber on the Canterbury 

Plains; the cottage originally 

had a thatched roof before it was 

replaced by corrugated iron in 

1900. 

She said the funding drive was 

not the first time Tiptree has 

been the focal point of adversity 

since it was built by English 

farmer William Savill.

allowed to purchase the property 

for £STG330. 

“If it hadn’t been for that, the 

cottage wouldn’t be there now,” 

McLeod said. 

Then, during the 1930s, Tiptree 

was used as a shearing shed, 

leading to significant wear and 

tear when sheep rubbed against 

the cob. 

The Gregg family – three are 

also members of the trust – 

bought the dilapidated cottage 

in 1963, rescuing it from ruin 

and gradually converting it to a 

museum, which opened to the 

public in 1979. 

Many of Savill’s possessions 

were on display. 

McLeod, a descendant of 

the couple, remembers visiting 

Tiptree as a teenager, and the 

carriage clock still rang a bell. 

“That came over from 

England and in the lounge room 

wall there’s a niche that’s been 

cut into the cob which is exactly 

the right size for the clock,” she 

said. 

McLeod joined the trust 

in 2016 and hopes to one day 

expand the attraction once the 

lease on an adjacent quarry 

expires and the land is reconstituted. 

“The surrounding farm had 

fish ponds and orchards, that’s 

now a quarry and the long-term 

plan is to get hold of a bit of 

that and do a larger agricultural 

museum.”

Pool Expansion 

Temporary entrance and changing rooms from Monday 19 October 

We’re speeding up work at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre to make sure it’s finished as soon as possible and catch up with the Covid disruption. 

To do this, we will be bringing forward our work in the entrance and changing room areas, which will require some changes to how 

you use the centre. 

From Monday 19 October, a new temporary entrance will be in place on the side of the main pool hall and temporary changing rooms 

will be in place on the north side of the building. 

This means the customer counter will be at the portacom in front of the temporary entrance and you will then need to cross the pool 

hall to the new changing rooms. 

The accelerated work means we’re on track to have both the new pool and new foyer, multi-use rooms, and changing rooms open in 

April and the final works completed by September 2021. 

Although work was delayed through the 

Level 4 lockdown period, we were able 

to catch up some time at Level 3, which 

means the pools will not have to close at 

all as originally planned. This new sped 

up work programme allows us to catch 

up the remaining time lost over the Level 

4 lockdown while always having a pool 

available for swimming.

Play rugby on your table top 


WHILE ALL Blacks to club 

rugby’s toilers are often urged to 

play what’s in front of them, Zane 

Thompson spent years refining 

his game plan. 

The board game fanatic spent 

eight years toying with a project 

to transplant the national sport 

to a card and dice based game 

where all the intricacies of 

the code – even the ability to 

determine the weather conditions 

– are built in. 

Although the goal is the same 

as playing on grass – scoring tries 

– three mini games: the scrum, 

lineout and breakdown ensure 

there is more to winning than a 

lucky roll of the dice. 

Usual tactical appreciation is 

key while the sin bin, TMO and 

astute use of the “cheat” card 

can also influence the flow of a 

match-up. 

Thompson, 48, laid the 

groundwork for Rugby – The 

Game one morning after his son 

Jacob’s match was rained off in 

Christchurch. 

“He made an off-the-cuff 

comment: ‘It sucks there’s not 

a rugby game’. I was like: ‘Let’s 

make one’,” he said. 

“It is a very different game now 

to what it was. Originally I had 15 

players lined out and it was quite 

long and messy. It was dialed 

back to get that fast game play 

for a board rather than it being a 

simulation.” 

Now there are six positional slots 

a side and a game of two halves 

should take 40min for players 13 

years and over. There is also a 7s 

format planned for juniors. 

Thompson developed an 

interest in board games in the 

1980s and it never wavered 

in spite of the advent of video 

consoles, computer games and 

mobile phone game apps. 

“As long as I can remember 

I’ve liked the competitiveness of 

board games,” he said. 

“That started with all your 

standard family games like 

Snakes and Ladders and it grew 

into Hero Quest, Space Crusade – 

very old-school games.” 

He then progressed to The 

Lords of Hellas and Western 

Legends before his focus turned 

to his own contribution to a 

growing global industry. 

The project gathered 

momentum when a Kickstarter 

page launched last September 

raised about $11,000, $1000 of 

which was spent on a mould for 

the ball. 

The first 1500-box order 

was produced in China and 

is expected to be stocked by 

Whitcoulls and other retailers 

in the run-up to Christmas – a 

victory of sorts because rugby 

games can be a hard sell. 

“Sports people probably aren’t 

that keen on a board game and 

most board gamers aren’t that 

into sport,” he said. 

New Zealand Rugby is playing 

a waiting game before they 

endorse the product, so for now 

Thompson’s supporters like Korey 

Waipouri and Grant Golding are 

the ‘stars’ of this edition. 

“We’ll look at that (NZR) 

after we get some sales up and 

hopefully we can negotiate to use 

some of the players,” Thompson 

said.

and have received great feedback so far. 

The initiative is definitely gaining traction 

fast,” says Chelsea. 

GiveMeBread is currently offering 

unlimited free deliveries in Rolleston (up 

to four kilometres from the purchase 

venue – with a small delivery fee charged 

per kilometre thereafter) – this is on 

orders $25 plus. 

Chelsea hopes it will help support local 

businesses to spring back after lockdown. 

“We charge a fair commission to the 

restaurants but take no commission from 

our drivers.” 

Double insulated bags are used to 

keep food warm and drinks cold, and 

Chelsea says a wide variety of businesses 

have already come on board with more 

suppliers joining each day. Booking a 

delivery is easy – via the app or website and 

the live status of the order easily can be 

tracked via GPS.

with the Loyalty Club enables users to earn 

points on dollars spent, which can be used

Fully grown larvae about 

2-3mm in length then cut a slit 

in the epidermis and drop to the 

ground to pupate in the soil or 

leaf litter. 

In warmer areas such as 

Auckland, the leafminer appear 

to breed year-round, although 

numbers appear to lower in early 

autumn ad late summer. 

Observations in Christchurch 

suggest numbers are lower and 

breeding is slower over winter. 

Parasitism rates of the leafminer 

in Christchurch is higher in 

larvae during late spring and 

early summer. 

The leafminer also feeds 

on native broom (Carmichaelia 

sp.).

Spankem boosts NZ Cup tilt

SPANKEM CALLED on his 

best weapon – his sizzling turn 

of speed – to nail Self Assured 

on the line and give his New 

Zealand Cup campaign another 

boost by winning the Methven 

Cup on Sunday. 

Giving away a race fitness 

edge to all of his rivals and 

being stuck third last before the 

home turn were not big enough 

obstacles to stop the Miracle 

Mile winner from taking out 

the 3000m group 2 feature by 

head and going one better than 

his brilliant first up effort in the 

Canterbury Classic. 

Self Assured took the lead 

on the home turn after sitting 

parked for the last lap of the 

Methven Cup, leaving Spankem 

with about seven lengths to 

make up. 

At that stage, the winner’s 

part-owners, Philip and Glenys 

Kennard, admitted they almost 

gave Spankem no chance of 

winning. 

And the sometimes tricky 

angle of the winning post at 

Methven had them convinced he 

didn’t clinch victory. 

“On the turn, Glenys and I 

said if we get second or third we 

would be happy,” Philip Kennard 

said. 

“Even on the line, I walked in 

to one of the boxes up the top 

there at Methven and I thought 

they had called that wrong. 

“I walked away thinking we 

had run second, quite happy, and 

then we got downstairs and they 

said you’ve won it.” 

Spankem looks to have joined 

a rocky road to the New Zealand 

Cup at the right time with his 

excellent return from injury in 

the Canterbury Classic and his 

Methven Cup win. 

And being just two runs in 

to his campaign, there is plenty 

more to come from the six-yearold. 

By the time Spankem gets 

to Ashburton to defend his 

Ashburton Flying Stakes title, he 

should be significantly fitter. 

“We are very excited,” Kennard 

said. 

“You would have seen what 

a good run in the Canterbury 

Classic – it was first up and it was 

a very good horse that beat him. 

“Self Assured had to do a bit 

more work and that probably 

helped us turn the tables. 

“He is going to go to the

“The best part about it, what

plenty of big race success, but 

their journey to their biggest of 

wins mean they keep their feet 

firmly on the ground. 

“Glenys and I really appreciate 

how hard it is to get horses to 

these races. 

“We have had ups and downs, 

there have been plenty of ups, 

but there have been a whole lot of 

downs. 

“It is a big achievement just to 

have a horse in the New Zealand 

Cup.” 

While Spankem is clearly 

on track to attempt to go one 

better than his second behind 

Cruz Bromac in last year’s New 

Zealand Cup, another of the 

Kennards’ horses is not. 

The owners are awaiting for 

the results of extensive blood 

testing done on Thefixer after 

the 2018 New Zealand Cup 

winner was pulled up out of 

the Canterbury Classic after 

suffering an atrial fibrillation. 

Going by the running of 

the Kerry Hoggard Memorial 

Holmes D G at Alexandra Park 

on Friday night, the Kennards 

could have had a third contender 

for the New Zealand Cup. 

South Coast Arden went a 

cracking race to get within half a 

length of the winner, Copy That. 

However, the Brent Mangos 

trained pacer is not nominated 

for New Zealand’s premier 

harness race. But his team have 

the option of making a late 

payment to for the New Zealand

Although work was delayed by the Level 4 lockdown period, we were able to catch up some time 

during Level 3, which means the pools will not have to close at all as originally planned. This new 

work programme allows us to catch up time lost during lockdown while keeping a pool available 

for swimming. 

The expansion will see a new 10-lane, 25-metre pool built, greatly increasing the existing capacity, 

with more recreational lane swimming and learn to swim space and allow more options for water 

sports and spectator space. The full expansion will also add recreation and community spaces.

Showcasing a passion for Kapa 

Haka and Kī -o-Rahi 

On Sunday 18 October a Lincoln High School sports team will 

gather on the Lincoln Domain ready to demonstrate the traditional 

Maori sport of Kī-o-Rahi. 

Team Manager and coach, Lincoln High School teacher Matua 

Tihirangi Brightwell says he introduced the sport to the school in 

2015 and the passion for the sport grew from there. 

“Basically the students love it! I didn’t have to do much selling, 

because it’s like nothing they’ve necessarily ever played before, but it 

can draw on lots of different skills of games they actually already play.” 

Tihirangi says he enjoys developing the teams and seeing them 

compete because of his passion for the sport. 

“I value it, I like to play it, I believe in the sport so it’s easy for me to 

be involved.” 

Tihirangi says it is better watched than described, but put simply 

Kī-o-Rahi is played on a circular field with a barrel, in the middle. 

One team scores points by throwing a ball at the barrel while the 

opponents defend the barrel and attempt to score a try. 

Tihirangi will also lead the secondary schools’ combined Kapa Haka 

group Te Kāhui Whetū o Waihora for a performance. 

He says CultureFest will be a great opportunity for these students 

from Lincoln, Darfield, Rolleston and Ellesmere secondary schools 

to showcase what Kapa Haka means to them. 

“Kapa Haka is a great way for some of the students to grow as 

people, build confidence and be involved in things Māori if they’re 

not Māori. I truly believe in what Māoridom has to offer so all I can 

do is present it, and that’s part of the reason why we wanted to 

do CultureFest. We’re going to showcase what Māoridom means 

to these four schools and to their families and give the audience a 

glimpse of the passion and the enjoyment.”

Farm waste management day returns 

A popular day to support farmers in disposing of hard to move farm waste is returning to Selwyn. 

Almost 7000 kg of farm waste was safely disposed of through the first Agrecovery Rural Recycling day, 

held in Ellesmere last year. The Council programme with Agrecovery Rural Recycling will be held in 

Malvern on Monday 9 November this year. The day offers farmers and growers the opportunity to safely 

dispose of a variety of farm waste. 

During the day farmers and growers who have preregistered will be able to drop off chemical 

containers, fertiliser and feedbags, waste oil and unwanted chemicals for recycling, or safe disposal. 

Unfortunately this year silage and bale wrap cannot be accepted. To take part in the day people must 

register, book a time and indicate the type of wastes they will be bringing. The location will be provided 

to registered attendees. 

Over 60 people dropped off 6915 kg of farm waste last year, including 2705 kg of chemicals that were 

safely treated and disposed of, 1500 kg of chemical containers and over 1000 kg of fertiliser bags. 

Selwyn District Council’s Solid Waste Manager, Andrew Boyd says the Council jumped at the 

opportunity to host the day again. 

“We saw last year how valuable the day was for people in 

our rural sector, so we’re excited to hold another one and 

support our community. We see it as a great partnership 

between Farmers, AgRecovery, the Council, and the 

specialist waste and recycling contractors – working 

together to help keep our environment free of waste.”

farmers and growers interested in registering for the 

events and finding out more about how to prepare

Lyons belts Lincoln out of contention

their mark on the competition 

with a hard-fought win over 

Ellesmere rivals Lincoln on 

Saturday. 

The 23-run Ohoka victory 

in the CRV Ambreed country 

premier one day 2020/21 cricket 

competition came on the back 

of a superb century by opener 

Daniel Lyons. 

Lyons’ 108 runs off 125 balls 

anchored the innings as the 

home side made an imposing 

249/4 in a reduced 42 overs, 

with Rhys Mariu who starred in 

the New Zealand XI at the ICC 

under-19 cricket World Cup in 

South Africa earlier this year, 

chiming in with a classy 49. 

Lincoln looked likely to run 

down the high score thanks to 

an incredible solo effort from Joe 

Williams. 

The left-hander plundered the 

Ohoka attack to all parts on his 

way to a blazing 160 runs off 

just 120 balls, which included 28 

boundaries. 

But when Williams was 

stumped by Will Hamilton off 

the medium-pace of Paul Miller 

in the 36 th over the game was 

lost. Miller and Austin Hamilton

queen Dame Ngaio Marsh to 

mark the 125th anniversary of 

the author’s birth. 

Born in Christchurch in 1895, 

Marsh died in 1982, aged 86. 

Nestled in a quiet corner of 

Cashmere, the weatherboard 

house – designed by leading 

local architect Samuel Hurst 

Seager – was home to the awardwinning 

writer for 76 years, with 

the family among the first to 

settle in the area. 

Today visitors can wander 

back in time, with the interior – 

packed with Marsh’s furniture, 

family treasures, books, awards 

and art – offering a unique 

narrative. 

The Heritage Festival tour, 

which runs over three weekends 

from Saturday, October 24, 

shares chapters from Marsh’s life

are made from fabric chosen by 

Dame Ngaio on her travels. 

“There is also memorabilia 

from her many Shakespearean 

productions, her writing desk, 

Petersen says the writer’s 

“whodunnit career began on a 

cold, wet weekend in London in 

1931”. 

“She was bored and sat down 

to write what would become her 

first Roderick Alleyn novel, A 

Man Lay Dead. 

“Over 50 years, she wrote 32 

classic English detective novels, 

than her contemporary, Agatha 

Christie, at one stage.” 

Ngaio Marsh House is a 

Category 1 Historic Place, 

with a registered heritage 

garden. 

The house’s designer was 

also responsible for wellknown 

World War I memorials 

overseas, and several Summit Rd 

landmarks, including the Sign of 

the Kiwi. 

Visitors can join a guided tour 

through the house and grounds 

to discover more about Marsh’s 

life and work.

Delightful drops from a hot season

THE MAJORITY of Central 

pinot noirs on the shelves at 

the moment are from the 2018 

vintage. 

This was an exceptionally hot 

season from December through 

until the beginning of March, 

when cooler, rainy conditions 

helped moderate the effects of the 

summer. It tested the mettle of 

the wineries, yet while most of the 

2018 wines will not be extremely 

long lived, they do offer delightful 

drinking now. Alongside those 

here today, a slew of late releases, 

and a comparative young ’un. 

2018 Valli Waitaki 

Vineyard Pinot Noir

Rating: Excellent 

Fragrant notes of wild herbs 

with cooler strawberry and 

darker fruits mingling. Sweet 

cherry and spicy oak frame the 

palate, adding a touch of

Station of the South opens 


VINZ is excited to announce the 

opening of the new state-of-the-art Testing 

Station in Rolleston. 

As CEO of VINZ Sean Stevens says, 

“The opening couldn’t have happened at a 

better time with the expansion of the new 

Christchurch Southern Motorway scheme, 

which is set to be completed in 2021.” 

The roadworks will improve access to 

the Izone in Rolleston by extending 7.5km 

of road in built-up areas from Hornby and

automotive businesses, restaurants, and 

cafes as well as being one of the fastestgrowing

The new Testing Station features two 

dedicated inspection pits for heavy vehicle 

and COFB customers as well as a separate 

lane for WOF and light vehicle compliance 

inspections. 

The Station supports WOF inspections 

for light vehicle, motorcycles and trailers, 

as well as transactional services such as 

registration and RUC. It also has specific 

lanes for heavy vehicles for COF Trucks, 

COF rental and entry inspections on both 

light and heavy vehicles. 

The dedicated heavy lane inspection 

area allows VINZ to inspect a whole truck 

and trailer with minimal movement of 

the vehicle. All traffic, including trucks, 

enters from Hynds Drive, is inspected, 

then departs from Link Drive, providing 

a seamless drive-through experience for

West Melton 

Time for change 

When Penny Calder started caring for 

children in her home in 2001, little did 

she know that working with children 

would become a passion for her and lead 

to building a dedicated childcare centre in 

West Melton in 2002. 

“Making a difference in someone else’s 

life was such a reward,” says Penny. “I 

nannied overseas and when I returned 

to New Zealand, I worked in a preschool 

before having children of my own and 

then caring for children in my home.” 

Penny was inundated with calls to care 

for local children and that was when she 

realized there was a need for a childcare 

centre in the area. 

The West Melton Kindergarten, Nursery 

and Learning Centre was built in the 

middle of a paddock and had just five 

children on the first day. As numbers 

increased, the dream of having older 

children in a separate area became a 

reality when the Learning Centre was 

added. 

“The first few years were hard work,” 

reminisces Penny, “working with the 

children in the morning, office work in the 

afternoon and then cleaning the centre at 

night.” She even roped in her mum to help 

out as she couldn’t afford extra staff. 

The childcare centre soon became a 

family affair. Not only did Penny’s children 

Penny Calder is proud her time at the centre and the valuable contribution 

she and its staff have given to the community over the years. 

attend the childcare centre but over the 

years her two daughters relieved for her. 

Recently Penny has also had the pleasure 

of having her granddaughter there too. 

Penny’s decision to sell the West Melton 

Kindergarten, Nursery and Learning 

Centre means she now has time to do 

other things in her life. The decision 

to sell was hard and came with much 

deliberation and tears. “It was time for me 

to take another step in life as the centre 

had been my whole life for so long.” 

Penny is grateful to the local 

community. “I want to thank my families 

for their support over the years,” says 

Penny. “Some families have been in the 

centre for many years.” She has seen 

those children grow into confident older 

children and takes pride in having helped 

them on their path to adulthood. 

“It just makes me so happy and I know 

we all did a good job!”

Operations manager Su Costa says the

Have a lot of fun with filo pastry 

FILO PASTRY is easy to use and 

you will end up with a lovely 

light, crisp pastry if you follow 

these rules. 

Work fairly quickly and if you 

are called away while you are 

rolling the parcels, cover the 

unbuttered stack with a tea towel 

to prevent it drying out. 

If the pastry is very cold, it 

will be more fragile and tend 

to crumble, so give it 20min 

to come to room temperature 

before you open the packet. 

Three Cheese and Chicken 

Filos 

Ingredients 

500gm chicken tenderloins 

(you need 10) 

50gm cream cheese 

120gm feta cheese 

25gm parmesan cheese 

pepper 

2 sundried tomatoes in oil 

100gm butter 

10 sheets filo pastry 

Directions 

Remove the filo pastry from 

the fridge and let it come to come 

to room temperature. 

Begin by cutting out the sinewy 

strip from the tenderloins. Place 

the tenderloins into a large frying 

pan on a high heat and fry for a 

minute or so on each side so that 

they are half cooked. You may 

need a little oil in the pan to prevent 

them sticking. 

Place the cream cheese into a 

bowl and crumble over the feta. 

Grate in the parmesan and mix 

this all together thoroughly with 

a fork. Season with pepper. 

Dry the tomatoes on kitchen 

paper and slice finely. Melt the 

butter. 

Have all of this ready before 

you open the packet of filo pastry. 

On a large clean dry work 

surface, lay out the filo. Remove a 

sheet and brush lightly with melted 

butter. Lay another sheet over 

the top and brush this as well. 

Place two of the cooked tenderloins 

at the edge closest to 

you and add a fifth of the cheese 

mixture and a few of the chopped 

tomatoes. Place on another tenderloin 

and begin to roll them up 

in the filo. 

Fold in the sides and finish 

rolling so that you end up with 

a tidy parcel. Brush lightly but 

thoroughly with butter and lay 

on a baking sheet. 

Continue in this way until all 

the chicken and filling has been 

used. You should have five parcels. 

At this stage, you can cover 

them and store them in the 

fridge for up to 24 hours. They 

can also be frozen for later cooking. 

Be sure to cover them well 

and as the pastry is quite fragile 

when frozen. It is a good idea to 

place them in a solid container. 

Bake in a 200 deg C oven for 

10-12min. 

Keep an eye on them as they 

will burst if they are left in too 

long. 

Mushroom strudel 

Ingredients 

25gm butter 

1 small onion 

250gm mushrooms 

150gm cream cheese 

100gm sour cream 

salt and pepper to taste 

75gm butter 

filo pastry 

Directions 

Finely chop the onion and put 

it in a frying pan with the first 

measure of butter. Cook over a 

medium heat until the onion is 

soft but not coloured. 

Rinse and trim the mushrooms 

and slice finely. Add to the onion 

and turn up the heat. Cook for 

around 5min until the mushrooms 

are starting to brown up. 

Remove from the heat and add 

the cream cheese. Let it sit in the 

hot pan to melt a little before 

stirring through. Stir in the sour 

cream and a little salt and pepper. 

Don’t mix it too much or you will 

end up with a very unattractive 

grey mixture. 

Melt the second measure of 

butter. 

Lay out the filo pastry on a 

clean, dry work surface. Take a 

sheet off the top and brush with 

melted butter. Lay a second sheet 

over the top and brush this one 

as well. 

Fold your pastry into a rectangle 

and brush again. Lightly mark 

the rectangle into thirds, lengthways. 

Place a large tablespoonful 

of the mushroom filling just 

above the centre line in the first 

third of your pastry, then fold to 

form a triangle. Keep folding in 

triangles, tucking it quite tight so 

there are no gaps at the corners. 

Fold the end under neatly. 

Continue in this way until all 

the filling has been used. Brush 

the tops of the triangles with butter 

and place on an oven tray. As 

with the previous recipe, they can 

now be refrigerated for a day or 

frozen for later use. 

Bake at 200 deg C for 8min, 

being careful not to over cook 

them or the filling will burst out.

slower to bolt and has deep lobed

Navara that stands out in a crowd 

NISSAN NAVARA N-TREK WARRIOR: Built for a serious 

off-road challenge.

New Zealand are showing no sign 

of slowing. 

There are a multitude of 

pick-ups in today’s market, and 

competition between the major 

manufacturers is fierce. 

Most manufacturers offer dressup 

kits and accessories that will 

give your ute a point of difference. 

There are also many choices in 

terms of limited edition models 

that complement the mainstream 

range. 

One of those is Nissan’s Navara 

N-Trek Warrior, it’s full of kit and 

adornments that make it stand 

out in the crowd; it is bold, brash 

and downright aggressive and it 

also looks as if it is here to stay 

such is the detail that has gone 

into the model. 

Alongside the elements which 

make the N-Trek Warrior stand 

out, it is also plush with a heap of 

kit that also takes it up a level in 

terms of refinement. Major features 

include satellite navigation, 

orange-stitched and two-tone 

leather and cloth trim with heated 

front seats, keyless entry and 

ignition, rear and overhead view 

camera system, touch screen display, 

Apple CarPlay and Android 

Auto, cruise control and all the 

safety gear to earn it a five-star 

Australasian New Car Assessment 

Program safety rating. 

Cabin comfort is high and 

space is plentiful. The deck area 

doesn’t compromise greatly the 

rear seating area, and the rake 

on those uprights is sufficient so 

that travel in the rear over long 

distances isn’t compromised. 

It’s one thing to dress up a 

model, but if those accessories are 

going to hinder the working role 

or its ability off-the-seal then I 

can’t really see the point. 

However, Nissan have gone one 

step further with the N-Trek Warrior, 

it’s four-wheel-drive ability is 

enhanced through massive tyres, 

the high profile Cooper rubber 

(215/70 x 17in) affords substantial 

off-road ability. Such are the size 

of the tyres (32in in diameter) 

that ground clearance has been 

raised substantially up to 268mm. 

Nissan had to do a lot of development 

work to make these tyres 

work on the vehicle, it required a 

suspension lift and some alterations 

so that the rubber wouldn’t 

grab any of the mechanicals when 

suspension travel was at its greatest. 

The shock absorbers are also a 

special specification for the Warrior, 

providing that compliance 

needed for comfort. 

The result is a formidable offroad 

ute in terms of looks and 

four-wheel-drive ability. Now, 

I’m not saying I evaluated the N- 

Trek Warrior to an extreme level 

off-road, I learnt many years ago 

not to venture off the seal seriously 

when alone, so I just poked 

around a dry riverbed selecting 

low ratio only to conquer a couple 

of low shingle banks. 

I can report, though, there 

was little chance of challenging 

the ride height or approach and 

departure angles, the N-Trek 

Warrior has substantial off-road 

ability. 

The engine is pretty much the 

same unit which has been around 

for a year or so now. It is a twinturbocharged, 

twin-camshaft 

four-cylinder unit which displaces 

2298cc and has healthy power 

outputs of 140kW and 450Nm. 

Nissan also claims a seven-litre 

per 100km combined cycle rating. 

The trip computer was reading 

around 10l/100km when I took 

the test car back to the dealership. 

There’s been little doubt that 

utes are becoming more car-like, 

not so much in their in-cabin 

features but in the way they drive. 

The N-Trek Warrior can be 

pushed into a corner with little 

fear. What Nissan’s engineers have 

done with the coil spring-located 

rear axle is genius. It is load bearing 

to cater for that heavy item, 

yet as a vehicle it has control and

The Navara N-Trek Warrior 

lands here at $76,990, it tops out 

the 10-model range that, incidentally,

I had the evaluation ute for a 

week and quickly came to enjoy 

its stature. Sure, at almost 5.4m 

it is a big vehicle and that needs 

to be taken into account in close 

confines, those standard metered 

car parks in our city are a bit of a 

challenge. It’s also a bit of stepup 

into the cabin proper, old age 

making that just a little bit harder 

than it needed to be. 

Nevertheless, there are many 

advantages in owning a ute, I 

used the Warrior to shift some 

of my daughter’s belongings as 

she transferred from one flat to 

another. 

With all of its enhancements 

the N-Trek Warrior will most 

certainly interest recreational 

enthusiasts and those buyers who 

want a ute for commercial use.

The general public is to be advised that a New 

Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted around 

the Oxford, West Melton, Burnham areas and the 

Waimakariri, Ashley and Selwyn river systems over the 

period 02 - 30 October 2020. 

The exercise will involve up to 80 personnel of Delta 

Company, 2/1 Battalion from Burnham Military Camp. 

Training will involve soldiers carrying individual 

weapons systems whilst moving around the area, 

blank ammunition will also be fired during this period. 

All Blank firing activities will be limited to the defence 

property and conservation area. There will be limit 

use of blank ammunition and pyrotechnics. The 

exercise will also involve the movement of troops and 

vehicles by day and night.

Why? Because the District Plan is a 10-year rule book which controls almost everything you do on land across the district, and how you do it. 

For example, it regulates where you can develop land in Selwyn. Or how you can protect our native flora and fauna. And how you can look after our cultural 

and historic heritage for future generations to enjoy.

Given the rich and diverse environment in Selwyn, natural hazards that we are more likely to be exposed 

to here include flooding, earthquakes, wildfire, and coastal erosion and inundation. Natural hazards 

can affect people, property, infrastructure and the wider environment. As a result all local councils 

around the country are required to assess and manage the risk of natural hazards. This is to stop any 

inappropriate development or land use in areas with the highest risks from flooding or other natural 

hazards. It is also important that landowners are aware of natural hazards that might affect their land or 

their plans for any future land development.

· You can make a submission on any provision in the Proposed District Plan (eg objective, policy, 

rule, definition, or planning map zoning, overlay or other notation). 

· When making a submission you have to provide your personal contact details. These details wi l be made public (as required by the 

Resource Management Act 1991) because any further submission supporting or opposing your submission must be forwarded to 

you as we l as to the Council. 

· Only submissions lodged during the consultation period wi l be considered, so make sure you give us your feedback by 5pm Friday 

4 December 2020.

your properties or what can be done in your local community or in Selwyn district in general. By submi ting your views, you can help shape

There are two main ways to navigate the ePlan. You can: 

1. Search for a property 

By using the interactive ePlan, you can search for a property in 

three ways: 

Type the property address or township into search bar and 

press the 'enter' key. 

Locate the property on the map using the zoom (+/-) 

function. Click on the property to select it. The map wi l 

highligh the property boundaries. 

Click the symbol to ‘find my location’ on the map. The 

map wi l return a result based on your IP address location. 

On the main homepage you can search for 

your property, go straigh to the Proposed 

District Plan or view the planning map. 

2. Read the entire Proposed District 

Plan like an eBook 

The structure of the ePlan is directed by the Ministry for the
