WESTERN DOWNS HIGH SCHOOLS COULD SEE A 

$7.3M INVESTMENT IF LABOR WIN ELECTION

Three schools on the Western 

Downs could see a $7.3 million 

investment to help build skills 

in students while they’re still at 

high school, granted Labor win 

the upcoming state election on 

October 31. 

This would include $2.8M for Chinchilla State 

High School and $2M for Tara Shire State 

College for engineering annexes to support 

training opportunities in the mining, gas and 

electrical industries. 

Dalby State High would also receive $2.5 

million for upgrades to the rural and industrial 

manufacturing training facilities. 

Speaking from Toowoomba last Wednesday, 

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe 

said the investment would ensure schools 

were well equipped to help students 

maximise future opportunities. 

“Only a Queensland Labor Government will 

deliver the skills our regions need to prepare 

students for jobs in our recovering economy,” 

Mr Hinchliffe said. 

“This will also support local construction jobs, 

helping our tradies and building suppliers at 

this crucial time.” 

Labor candidate for Toowoomba North 

Megan O’Hara Sullivan who was also present 

at Toowoomba said she welcome the 

investment further afield. 

“I’m so proud to hear the investment into 

skilling, especially at Tara because I’m Megan 

O’Hara from Tara,” she said. 

The funding is part of a skills boost to build 

and upgrade 26 Queensland school’s facilities 

and support the state’s economic recovery, 

which Labor says will create 150 jobs. 

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Local 

Schools Local Jobs initiative would target the 

jobs of the future so students can seamlessly 

access at-school training for industries 

relevant to their regions. 

“These projects will target the skills needed to 

diversify and strengthen regional economies, 

which is why it’s an important part of 

Queensland’s plan for economic recovery,” 

she said. 

“We know that we have healthy regional 

communities, and we want to see those rural 

communities grow into the future. 

“So, what we have done is we have looked at 

the opportunities that exist in those regions 

and the industries that are growing, and we 

want to link those skills in with schools. 

“It is a gateway to industry and a pathway for 

students to get the skills they need for the 

industries that are relevant in their regions. 

“It means jobs for young people, jobs for 

Queenslanders and jobs for Queensland.”

A STRIKING STORM DISPLAY TAKES OUT TOP PRIZE

A Chinchilla State High School 

(CSHS) student has reached the 

pinnacle of Visual Arts during 

his schooling career by receiving 

a prestigious award that is seen 

as the equivalent of making a 

Queensland team. 

On Tuesday morning Seth Gerke was 

presented at the school's assembly his 2020 

Excellence Award for Visual Art. 

Each year, all schools offering senior visual art 

in Queensland are invited to submit up to four 

student's artworks in the Creative Generative 

Excellence Award visual arts program. 

Still, the school only needed to submit one. 

Seth's artwork was chosen from over 521 

submissions from 180 schools, and he was 

one of just 37 excellence award winners 

throughout the state. 

Also, as part of winning the award, the year 

12 student's artwork will be displayed at 

the Gallery of Modern Arts in Brisbane for 

approximately six months in 2021. 

This is the first time a student from CSHS has 

achieved such a high honour and has left 

Seth feeling amazing, and Principal Ian Insley 

praising his achievements. 

"I didn't think I would get it this year because 

there were so many entries but I'm stoked 

about it," Seth said. 

"For me when we found out that Seth had 

won this award, I knew how important it was 

and how big of a deal it was," Mr Insley said. 

"We have thousands of Year 12 students in 

Visual Arts across Queensland and to be one 

of 37 to be picked is enormous and is a huge 

accomplishment. 

"When I saw his clip for me it demonstrated 

why visual arts are so important. 

"You can see and feel who Seth is and 

what he stands for, so I have to say a big 

congratulations, and I'm very proud of him 

and what he has achieved." 

After receiving a regional encouragement 

award last year, Seth's teacher Helen Hubbard 

submitted another one of his assessment 

pieces this year which took out the top prize. 

The video titled 'Domination' was made by 

collecting, editing, and composing 120,000 

photos. 

Adobe Lightroom was utilised to sequence 

photos at approximately one millisecond 

each, to create a running time-lapse. 

Seth created the music composition to 

accompany and enrich the visuals and overall 

narrative of nature which is the subject 

matter. 

"Nature is the almighty," Seth said. 

"I cannot control its unpredictable power; I 

can only adapt to the control it has over me. 

"Yet, our world tries to replicate and reshape 

this irreplaceable environment. 

"My core focus is to explore my local 

landscapes to communicate my passion and 

involvement in natural environments to my 

audience. 

"My time-based media documents these 

landscapes through exploiting my time-lapse 

photography, film and sound compositions. 

"All 120,000 photos capture the authority, 

aesthetic and immense scale of nature. 

"I am my true self when in nature and when 

making art in landscapes and because of 

spiritual connection to nature, I can capture 

and represent the almighty language of the 

environment that mankind cannot create." 

Growing up on land just outside of Chinchilla 

and spending his spare time documenting 

storms and natural landscapes locally and 

across the Western Downs with Gerkies 

Storm Chasing, it was here that Seth began 

his explorations and found his passion for 

nature.

WESTERN DOWNS KINDERGARTEN’S RATINGS

The latest review of childcare 

providers has revealed how 

Western Downs centres stack 

up compared to the rest of the 

nation. 

Data released by the Australian Children's 

Education and Care Quality Authority ranked 

every childcare centre in the state based on 

their performance to the national quality 

standards (NQS). 

The centres are assessed on seven criteria 

- education, health and safety, physical 

environment, staffing, relationships with 

children, partnerships with families and 

communities and governance and leadership. 

The schools are then categorised on whether 

they're working towards national quality 

standards (NQS), meeting NQS, or exceeding 

NQS. 

NCC early learners, Busy Bees and the 

Christian College Kindergarten in Chinchilla 

all received a working towards National 

Quality Standard rating. 

Chinchilla Community Kindergarten was the 

best ranked kindy after they got an exceeding 

National Quality Standard rating. 

A staff member at the kindergarten said they 

were proud of achieving such a high rating. 

"Kindy staff pride themselves on planning 

and implementation of the best teaching 

practises that ensure provided with every 

opportunity to develop and grow socially, 

emotionally, cognitively and physically," they 

said. 

"Staff recognise that the physical 

environments and the overall atmosphere 

of our service supports and enhances 

each child's learning, enabling positive 

relationships and effective communication. 

"The Kindy acknowledges the importance 

and value of giving children the power of 

influence and determine the direction of 

their own learning." 

In the rest of the Western Downs, the majority 

of the Miles kindergartens proved to be 

adequate with the Murilla Family Day Care, 

Outside School Hours Care and Kindergarten 

were all meeting the National Quality 

Standard. 

The Murilla Long Day Care Centre was 

working towards it. 

In Dalby, there were two centres which were 

exceeding the National Quality Standard. 

They were the Stuart Street Kindergarten 

and Preschool and the Dalby Beck Street 

Kindergarten. 

The Dalby Day Nursery and Preschool, 

Goodstart Early Learning Dalby, Kath Dickson 

Kindergarten Dalby South, PCYC Dalby 

School Age Care, Dalby Christian College 

Early Learning Centre and the Milestones 

Early Learning Dalby kindies all received a 

meeting NQS rating. 

Both the Kids Club Dalby and Hall-Thorpe 

Sports OSHC Dalby were working towards 

NQS. 

The C&K Tara Childcare Centre and Jandowae 

Kindergarten were the other two centres to 

be rated in the region, and both were seen to 

be meeting NQS. 

COMPETITION BRINGS MUCH NEEDED TRAFFIC FOR LOCAL ACCOMMODATION OWNERS

Many major industries have been hit 

by the global pandemic including 

the accommodation providers whose 

properties which are usually bursting at 

the seams, filled with caravans and kids 

playing, were left empty as restrictions 

forced people to stay home. 

However, as restrictions start to ease, and tourists 

begin to venture out to explore their own backyard, 

local accommodation providers rooms are beginning 

to fill again. 

To help encourage tourists to head west, boost 

the economy and assist accommodation business 

affected by travel restrictions to recover, a 

competition to ‘Win a Long Weekend on the Western 

Downs’ this month was held. 

Organised by Business Navigator Western Downs and 

supported by Shell’s QGC business, the competition 

attracted over 6,000 entries from Queenslanders 

keen to explore. 

From those, 45 lucky entrants won a 3-night stay 

at any hotel, motel, caravan park or retreat in the 

Western Downs. 

The Business Navigator Western Downs team were 

impressed with the level of interest shown by 

Queenslanders in taking a trip to the region. 

Business Coach, Ariane de Rooy said the funding 

boost has not only helped accommodation providers 

but has also resulted in tourist dollars being spent 

with hospitality venues and retailers. 

“The message is spreading that the Western Downs is 

a great place for a long weekend,” she said. 

“The high response rate to this competition is a 

real positive for the Western Downs and should 

encourage more Queenslanders to travel and 

experience a holiday close to home, boosting jobs 

in our region and showcasing the beauty and history 

we have to offer.” 

The Laurels of Chinchilla proved to be a prevalent 

choice for the winners, with owner Shara Fuller 

delighted to welcome visitors to our region. 

“It’s exciting to see the bookings coming in, and it’s 

such a beautiful time of year to visit the Western 

Downs,” she said. 

“It’s a great destination being only a three-hour drive 

from Brisbane. 

“We are ready to welcome guests.”

There is growing concerns that 

protective behaviour programs 

in schools remain “hit and miss” 

across Queensland, leaving 

vulnerable children exposed, 

without the confidence to seek 

help. 

Act for Kids is calling on the political leaders 

contesting the election to commit to 

mandating evidence-based programs in 

Queensland schools. 

Recent research conducted by the University 

of the Sunshine Coast confirmed family homes 

were the most “risky place” for child sexual 

abuse. This research indicated between 70 

to 80 per cent of child sexual abuse occurs in 

domestic settings. 

There were more than 5000 reports of children 

being sexually abused by family members in 

Australia over the past year. Sadly, this is not 

a true representation of the abuse happening 

in homes with many cases going unreported. 

“To keep Queensland children safe from sexual, 

physical and emotional abuse and neglect, 

Act for Kids wants an elected Government 

to commit to a minimum evidence based 

standard for compulsory programs in schools,” 

Doctor Katrina Lines, Act for Kids Chief 

Executive Officer said. 

Act for Kids has developed the only protective 

behaviours program in Australia, which 

underwent a world-class, multi-site, goldstandard 

randomised controlled trial. 

“Our Learn to be safe with Emmy and friends 

program has now been delivered to more 

than 54 thousand children across the country, 

giving each child more confidence to identify 

when they don’t feel safe,” explained Dr Lines. 

Act for Kids believes every child deserves 

the opportunity to access such programs, 

ensuring they can gain the confidence to seek 

help when they need it the most. 

SKIN CANCER CAPITAL OF THE 

WORLD IN DESPERATE NEED 

OF MASS MEDIA PREVENTION 

CAMPAIGN 

Cancer Council Queensland is calling 

on the next state Government to 

commit to funding a skin cancer 

prevention mass media campaign to 

reduce the growing burden of skin 

cancer in Queensland. 

Melanoma is still the most common form of 

cancer in Queensland with over 4,000 people 

diagnosed each year. In addition, over 360,000 

non-melanoma skin cancers are treated each 

year - even though both forms of skin cancer 

are almost entirely preventable. 

Cancer Council Queensland CEO, Ms Chris 

McMillan said this investment will both 

protect the health of Queenslanders and 

reduce the burden on the health system. 

“Skin cancer has a substantial social and 

economic impact on Queensland - it costs 

the public health system an estimated $175 

million annually, and this does not include 

the costs associated with loss of productivity 

or any social impacts” said Ms McMillan. 

“Ensuring there is sufficient and effective 

investment in preventative health is essential 

now more than ever, to keep Queenslanders 

healthy and reduce further strain on the 

healthcare system, especially given the 

continuing challenges facing our health 

system due to the COVID-19 pandemic.” 

Cancer Connect 

Talk to someone who’s been there 

Last year 1 in 5 Queenslanders did not 

received any information on sun protection, 

highlighting room for improvement in the 

sunshine state. Fortunately, Queenslanders 

want to improve their sun safety habits, with 

95% of Queenslanders in favour of a mass 

media campaign on sun protection and early 

detection. 

“Skin cancer prevention is also cost-effective 

- for every $1 invested in a mass media skin 

cancer prevention campaign, a $3.85 return 

on investment is achieved,” said Ms McMillan. 

“We urge the next Queensland government 

to invest $3 million per annum into a mass 

media skin cancer prevention campaign. This 

initiative will ultimately result in significant 

economic benefits and have a positive 

impact for Queenslanders and their families. 

“Our mission at Cancer Council Queensland is 

to reduce burden of cancer, but this cannot be 

done alone. We know that preventing cancer 

is the most effective way of creating a cancerfree 

future, and look forward to working with 

the next Queensland government to reduce 

the burden of cancer across our community.” 

The Queensland state election is due to be 

held on 31 October.

• Chinchilla police responded to an assault of a young girl 

at the Chinchilla Botanic Parklands on Friday, October 6, at 

4.45pm. Police have located the offender who was a 15-yearold 

boy. He will be dealt with under the Youth Justice 

Provisions act, 1992. 

• A security guard was assaulted on October 9 at about 11pm. 

The incident occurred at a Chinchilla pub a 25-year0old 

male was arrested in relations to the incident. He is facing 

multiple alleged charges including assault causing bodily 

harm, obstructing police, and a public nuisance charge. 

• Chinchilla police pulled over a 44-year-old man when he 

was leaving the RSL and was intercepted for the purpose 

of a roadside breath test. His reading came back four times 

over the limit and was also driving without a driver’s licence. 

• A Chinchilla man alleged to be dealing dangerous drugs 

has been charged with 70 drug related offences. 67 of the 

charges were for allegedly supplying dangerous drugs. 

The 38-year-old man was also charged with, one count 

each of possess property suspected of having been used in 

the commission of a drug offence, possession of property 

suspected of having been the proceeds of an offence and 

contravene direction. Police also found a small quantity

of methylamphetamine, clip seal bags, cash, scales, and 

drug related utensils at the man’s home. The warrant was 

executed on September 15, on Barnsley Street as part of 

Operation Impede. The alleged dealer is set to face Chinchilla

zero 15km racing experience, 

zero half marathon experience 

and zero marathons to his name, 

one ex-Chinchilla student is 

preparing for the toughest race 

of his life but is fuelled by a heartwarming 

reason. 

Watching both his sisters suffer and 

wondering every day how he was fortunate 

not to get it, Jeremy Drabsch is taking on the 

gruelling 50km ultra-marathon charity race 

for his two sisters and to raise awareness for 

Epilepsy Queensland. 

"I've always wanted to do something for both 

of them, and in general for epilepsy, because 

I feel many people don't grasp the impact it 

can have on people's lives," he said. 

"During COVID, I started to take up running 

to deal with my COVID related struggles. 

"I sort of came out the other end a lot better 

off physically and mentally, and I wanted 

to do something to challenge myself and 

realised it would be the perfect lens to try 

and raise money for epilepsy." 

Jeremy can still recall the frightening moment 

he witnessed his sister have her first seizure. 

"She fell backwards and hit her head on the 

cement," he said. 

"It made this terrible sound, like a watermelon 

smashing, it was horrible, and to see Courtney 

sitting there having a fit, her body writhing 

and shaking uncontrollably. 

"Then she comes out of it… the scariest part 

is not knowing if they're going to be the same 

person or not because it just takes one head 

to the cement the wrong way and they're 

never the same again, one bad fall and that 

person may never be the same, or they might 

die. 

"I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy to see 

someone you care about go through that." 

Around 50 million people worldwide and 

200,000 Queenslanders have epilepsy, and 

it can have detrimental effects on patients 

lives. 

For Courtney, it meant multiple surgeries 

after body parts were injured from her falls 

and trouble in the workforce due to the 

unpredictable nature of the disease.

A LESSON IN LOGIC ... 

A fourth-grade teacher was giving her 

pupils a lesson in logic. 

“Here is the situation,” she said. “A man is 

standing up in a boat in the middle of a 

river, fishing. He loses his balance, falls in, 

and begins splashing and yelling for help. 

His wife hears the commotion, knows he 

can’t swim, and runs down to the bank. 

Why do you think she ran to the bank?” 

A girl raised her hand and asked, “To 

withdraw all his money from his savings 

account immediately?” 

"She has to have reconstructive shoulder 

surgery now because she's landed on it so 

many times and now it dislocates so easily, 

even when she's asleep. 

"However, she can't pay for the surgery 

because she can't hold a job for things totally 

out of her control.," he said. 

Jeremy has been training for the event for 

the past three weeks and despite working his 

way up to a 20km run, he knows that it won't 

be easy, and that he is in for a world of hurt. 

"A big part of it is that I wanted to do 

something to cause me suffering, pain, and 

agony, that I'd want to quit from because 

that's the point; we are lucky we can stop the 

race if it becomes too much, but others don't 

have that option," he said. 

"For a large part of my life there has been this 

guilt that both my sisters got epilepsy and I 

somehow managed not to get it, so I think 

the suffering the race will bring… it's sort of 

like my version of self-inflicted punishment. 

"I can use it to frame the challenge that I just inspire my main group of friends, if they 

is epilepsy because I can say, 'well this go away with a better understand of epilepsy, 

race is going to be very difficult, and I will then that's sort of mission accomplished to

The Western Downs Libraries 

will bring books to life this week 

through and share the magic 

of reading through interactive 

events. 

To celebrate National Book Week from 

October 17 to October 23, Western Downs 

residents are invited to attend a series of 

Storytime sessions hosted by the libraries 

throughout Book Week for kids of all ages, 

as well as partnering with comedian Sean 

Murphy to deliver a virtual Book Party!.

Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said 

this year's Book Week festivities were a fun 

and interactive way to get kids involved in 

reading. 

"Book Week has become a hugely popular 

event celebrated right across the country, 

which promotes the importance of 

developing early literacy skills by making it 

fun and exciting for families to engage in," Cr 

Maguire said.

and the importance of having a healthy 

work life balance to reduce stress and 

manage day-to-day activities. She also 

discussed the role of organisations 

like Origin play in supporting 

rural communities and providing 

opportunities for growth and wellbeing.

Out of work for seven months, 

wondering where their next 

meal is going to come from and 

wondering if they will ever be able 

to return to what they love doing, 

the impacts of the coronavirus 

have been extremely devastating 

for the showman. 

Usually moving around visiting towns, 

making friends and producing happiness 

all over the country, the pandemic has not 

only impacted them financially but for the 

showman it has taken it's toll mentally as well. 

Then for people of our community, after 

significant events such as shows were 

cancelled and people were forced to stay 

inside, residents too are feeling the financial 

and emotional devastation of the tough 

times. 

However, now is the time to celebrate 

because Norah from Australian Amusement 

Organization understood this and has 

organised a Family Fun Fair to come to town. 

"We have gone and organised it ourselves 

because it's the only thing that's going to 

save us now," she said. 

"Also, to be able to wake up last week and 

know I can afford to pay the registration on 

my truck is a massive relief because it wasn't 

going to happen if I didn't have these fairs. 

"We are also aware of the effect the drought 

and pandemic have on country communities, 

and when we do shows, we can see the 

financial and emotional devastation 

when things are tough, and it's 

awful. 

"So for us to be able to go out start 

working, put the smiles on peoples 

faces and for those communities to 

walk out with a smile on their faces, 

it must be doing them a world of 

good to have some normality back 

and fun. 

"It works both ways." 

The Family Fun Fair will be 

happening at the Chinchilla 

Showgrounds on October 22 from 

5pm to 9pm, October 23 from 4pm 

to 9pm and October 24 from 10am 

to 9pm. 

With the traditional shows 

cancelled, it's the perfect way for 

residents to still get there show fix 

and experience the aspects they 

know and love. 

"We've got showbags, Dagwood 

dogs, dodgem cars, other rides and 

the games," Norah said. 

"We have put together a pretty 

good line up which is sure to make 

people happy. 

"It's a family event, so there is 

something for everyone, and with a 

$2 entry fee, it's only the price of half a cup 

of coffee. 

"Anyone under five is free, though." 

Like any other event that is run in the modernday, 

Norah has worked closely with both the 

Western Downs Regional Council (WDRC) 

and Queensland Health to develop a COVID 

safe plan to ensure the safety of both patrons 

and staff. 

Everyone will be required to sign in at the 

event at entry, there will be sperate entry 

and exit points, numbers are capped, hand 

sanitiser will available, and social distancing 

must be adhered to. 

"If they are a family group or a group of 

friends that come in together, they can move 

around together," Norah explained. 

Although things have been a bit of a 

challenge with the team having to bend over 

backwards with the restrictions, they have 

been successful. 

Also, despite taking a significant risk to come 

out to the country towns and operate at half 

capacity, Norah said if they didn't do it, they 

would die. 

"Our money is depending on these carnivals, 

and we are hoping people support us," she 

said. 

"We've taken a huge risk at a huge expense, 

and we would appreciate anyone who comes 

through the gate." 

Despite the rules and regulations, Norah said 

that she has received tremendous support 

from both the council and Queensland Health 

and hopes their event will inspire others to 

host COVID safe events as well and get the 

community back together. 

"Queensland Health is encouraging people 

to give them a call and get their events 

together," she said. 

"The Western Downs Regional Council have 

also been brilliant and want to help the 

community to get their events happening 

and not fear all the regulations. 

"It's a lot of extra jobs, but once you have 

them in place, it's manageable. 

"If we can get the public to do the right thing, 

it helps us present a COVID safe event which 

is encouraging to other local groups to go 

ahead with what they do. 

"In saying that we invite any organisation to 

come down and have a look at what we are 

doing. 

"I'm happy to explain things and discuss 

them because I think seeing how it's working 

makes life a little bit easier and it's important 

that our communities start to interact again." 

The Family Fun Fair has already been to Dalby 

and Kingaroy and will head to Nanango after 

Chinchilla with the previous ones already a 

great success. 

"I'm a whole lot happier," Norah said. 

"One night at Kingaroy, we had kids walking 

out with showbags bigger than themselves, 

fairy floss in hand and smiles on their faces. 

"I was so happy I could cry."

The 2019/2020 swimming season 

has been described as a whirlwind 

for the Tara Dolphins but despite 

the challenges brought their way, 

they didn’t let anything slow 

them down. 

The quickly enforced COVID-19 lockdown may 

have meant that their end of season breakup 

and presentations had to be postponed so 

instead saw it as an opportunity to start the 

2020/2021 season off with a bang. 

The first club night for this season which was 

held at the Tara pool last Wednesday began 

with the usual AGM and election of new 

office bearers. 

The club welcomed newly elected President 

Matthew Prain, Vice President Myra-Lyn 

Frauenfelder, Secretary Jaime Hirst, Treasurer 

Rebekah Ey, Publicity Officer Chantahl 

Stedman and Club Coach Michael Steepe. 

The Tara Swim Club said they would also like 

to acknowledge the wonderful work of the 

previous executive committee and especially 

that of Immediate Past President David

SWIMMING PAST PREVIOUS SEASON AND DIVING INTO A NEW ONE 

Gunther, who has contributed over seven 

years as President of Tara Swim Club. 

They defined David as an avid volunteer in 

many local organisations and a cornerstone 

of the Tara community and that the club and 

town of Tara is so grateful for the support 

David has given over the years. 

Newly elected President Matthew Prain said 

he is looking forward to building on the 

strong base that has been established over 

the past few years. 

“Outgoing President Dave Gunther and the 

various Committee Members have created 

a great little club that is big on participation 

and having fun, which in turn has led to some 

great results at higher levels,” he said. 

“I don't plan on changing anything in this 

regard and look forward to working with 

all parents and the newly appointed Coach, 

Michael Steep to ensure each swimmer is 

given the best opportunity to achieve their 

goals this swimming season.” 

Once all the official announcements were 

made, the evening then continued with a 

fabulous pool party for the swimmers and 

followed by presentations. 

Trophies were awarded and focused heavily 

on personal achievement with a points 

system. 

Points are earned for participation in each 

stroke and bonus points for each time a child 

sets a new personal best at their weekly club 

nights and the system is a fabulous setup 

to encourage children to better themselves 

rather than focusing on the fastest swimmers. 

The Tara Swim Club said they were so proud 

of their swimmers and their achievements.

DEB FRECKLINGTON PROMISE DROUGHT-PROOF 

WESTERN QUEENSLAND 

Deb Frecklington has promised 

to build the solution to drought 

in western Queensland if she 

becomes premier at the end of 

the month. 

At her campaign launch in Brisbane on 

Sunday, Ms Frecklington said the New 

Bradfield Scheme would become a "reality" 

under an LNP government. 

Releasing the first fly-through video of the 

proposed irrigation scheme - touted as the 

answer to drought in western Queensland - 

Ms Frecklington said Bradfield would be the 

biggest dam ever built in Australia. 

The plan to move water from the raindrenched 

north to the drought-declared 

west was first touted by Sydney Harbour 

Bridge architect John Bradfield in the 1930s. 

It was further developed by Sir Leo Hielscher 

and Sir Frank Moore and has been talked 

about by politicians across the spectrum for 

years.

At Sunday's scaled-back LNP launch, held 

at the Emporium Hotel in South Bank, there 

was no sign of former leaders Lawrence 

Springborg or Campbell Newman. However, 

the conservative party's most senior 

Queensland politician, Home Affairs Minister 

Peter Dutton, and Brisbane lord mayor Adrian 

affected by drought conditions.

“Being able to replace a water tank, 

mend a fence or purchase a week’s 

supply of groceries at the local store can 

make a significant positive contribution 

to a family dealing with drought,” said 

Scott Barrett, GIVIT’s NSW Manager. He 

said that last year was Australia’s driest 

on record and although some areas 

have received rainfall this year, it will 

take much more than a few showers to 

make any significant difference. 

“Drought affects everyone in regional 

communities; farmers, their businesses

in power for four years, not three," she said. 

"And those four years will be critical for our 

economic future. 

"The Queensland economy was in trouble 

long before COVID, now it is in crisis. That is 

what this election is about." 

Early voting begins across Queensland on

spending and the effects run deep 

across generations, economically,

Leo Gordon Apex Park in 

Meandarra will be revitalised 

with new facilities and extensive 

landscaping as part of Western 

Downs Regional Council’s local 

stimulus package to create jobs 

and boost the liveability of the 

region. 

Works to enrich the popular park will include 

new picnic shelters, a BBQ shelter, walkways, 

new trees, turfing and irrigation throughout 

the space. 

Council Spokesperson for Recreational Spaces 

and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman 

said once complete, the project would benefit 

locals and visitors alike. 

“Leo Gordon Park is a very popular spot in 

our community and it’s in a prime position 

to welcome travellers passing through the 

beautiful town of Meandarra,” Cr Tillman said. 

“It is important that we continue to maintain 

our parks and open spaces right across 

the region as they are a valued part of the 

community and play a big role in the liveability 

for our residents. 

“The completed project will not only provide 

a more modern space for our community to 

enjoy but will also entice our visitors to stop 

and stay a little longer in our towns.” 

The Leo Gordon Apex Park upgrade is included 

in Council’s extensive COVID-19 Recovery 

Package and will support local business with 

the majority of materials and labour sourced 

within the Western Downs. 

Construction is expected to commence during 

the first week of November.

THE FACEBOOK GROUP THAT CHANGED SMALL BUSINESS FOREVER FOR RURAL AUSTRALIA 

The Facebook group that was 

created by Jenn Donovan, called 

Buy From a Bush Business, turns 1 

on October 31 st 2020. 

In one year, Jenn has taken her online 

community, which supports rural small 

businesses from NO members to 285,000 

members, and still growing at 100’s a week. 

Jenn, a farmer’s wife and marketing thought 

leader, who lives in the Riverina of NSW, tells 

how she was driving home from a marketing 

tour, with her business, of the Riverina back 

in October 2019, when she came up with the 

idea of a Facebook group to support rural 

small business owners. 

“Buy From the Bush was a hashtag that 

people were starting to know about but 

didn’t know how to get involved with. It was 

the most common question all week during 

my workshop tour of Narrandera, Wagga 

Wagga, Moulamein and Hay”, says Jenn. 

“I lived and was working in drought country 

– years of drought had hit these (and 

many other) towns hard. It was coming up 

Christmas and no one was looking forward to 

it.” 

“I know as an ex-retailer, that if farmers don’t 

have money, towns don’t have money – so no 

one really expected a good Christmas in their 

business”. 

With the complexities of Instagram for 

some business owners, Jenn decided that 

a Facebook group, where people could just 

post themselves, was the way to go. 

So, on Friday October 31 st 2019, after getting 

home from a week away, she created Buy 

From a Bush Business Facebook Group. 

Jenn laughs at how she celebrated with such 

gusto at 5,000 members, 10,000 members, 

25,000 members – having literally no idea 

that it would grow to be, not only the size of a 

small city, but an economy all of its own. 

“I have no idea how much money has been 

traded in the past 12 months, but it must 

be in the 100,000’s of thousands – possibly 

millions”, says Jenn 

“Some people who posted didn’t even have 

a business yet, just a hobby, but soon found 

themselves with a community of brand new 

buyers, from all over the country, wanting 

their goods”. 

It was a strategic decision by Jenn, from 

the beginning, that it wouldn’t just be an 

“Australian Made” group. 

“As an ex-retailer, I didn’t make my goods, 

so I wanted to support those who were like 

me. Whether they made the product or not 

wasn’t my concern – I just wanted to help. 

My theory was that if we didn’t help retailers 

like the ones in the main streets of our rural 

towns, we’d have ghost towns everywhere – 

which would further ruin the rural economy 

for many years to come”, says Jenn. 

Little did Jenn know what was to come. 

Many communities who were already hurting 

from drought, faced the devastation of the 

summer bushfires, loosing homes, livelihoods 

and the so important, for many communities, 

the tourism dollar. 

To then, to be hit with Covid19 on top of 

everything else. 

She connected the city with the country. 

She created a community that, even if 

they couldn’t afford to spend money with 

businesses, they helped in other ways 

like sharing a post, liking a post or giving 

the business owner encouragement or a 

compliment – which is, at the heart of it, what 

SOCIAL MEDIA is all about.

HELPING FATHERS 

FEEL EMPOWERED 

IN WESTERN 

QUEENSLAND 

A program which aims to support fathers in western 

Queensland has taken off with a second group now 

formed. 

The Fathers with Futures has been running for around a year and stopped 

briefly due to COVID-19, before resuming in Term 3. 

The group came about after Anglicare Southern Queensland identified a 

lack of support services for Dads in the region. 

Anglicare Southern Queensland is one of Queensland’s most trusted 

social welfare organisations. Established in Brisbane in 1870, it’s a not-forprofit 

charity delivering a broad range of community services, including 

homelessness support, mental health and family counselling, foster care 

and aged care. One in every 30 Queenslanders is empowered by Anglicare 

Southern Queensland. 

Anglicare Southern Queensland Roma Family Support Worker Daniel Wales 

said the rational became that “if there’s very little support services for Dads, 

then we should empower Dads to establish their own support networks,” 

he said. 

“And so the group was born. Being a father myself as well as a Family 

Support worker enhanced my ability to facilitate the group and relate to 

the issues and struggles of the Dad’s who attend. 

Due to its popularity, a second Fathers with Futures group now exists. 

“The main one meets on the second Sunday of the month and has four 

regular Dads and about half a dozen Dads who make it when they can,” he 

said. 

“The other one (Fathers With Futures: Weekday Edition) meets on the second 

and fourth Thursday at the month, and currently has three regular Dads.” 

When it comes to people having a rough time my main advice is this: 

“In July we get an accountant to help us with our tax refund to help us get a 

nice fat tax return. When the tractor brakes down we get a diesel mechanic 

to help us get our machine back up and running. When the wiring in our 

house goes on the fritz we call a sparky to help restore power,” he says. 

“Our families and mental health are the same deal. We have the ability to 

slog our way through, but there are people in our community who are 

trained in these areas who can help us get through it easier and safer. We 

ask for help with every other aspect of our lives, let’s ask for help with our 

families and mental health too. Even if that person is your best mate, our 

folks, or even the dog.” 

Daniel is passionate about supporting local Mental Health initiatives in the 

Roma area, last week he was involved in the Blue Tree Project run by Lifeline. 

The Blue Tree Project is aimed at helping raise awareness of mental health 

issues within the community by painting trees in the local community blue.

is calling for residents to shine a 

light on the tremendous work of 

local groups and individuals in 

their communities by nominating 

them for the 2021 Australia Day 

Awards. 

Council is now accepting nominations for 

the region’s most significant awards which 

recognise the region’s local legends, talented 

sportsmen and women, creative talents, 

volunteer heroes and generous community 

groups. 

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul 

McVeigh said now is the time to show your 

appreciation for those outstanding people in 

the local community. 

“It has been a challenging year for all so it’s 

particularly important to give those who 

work hard and deliver great work for their 

community the pat on the back they deserve 

by nominating them for our prestigious 

awards,” Cr McVeigh said. 

“Our community members are our loudest 

advocates for what’s great about our region so 

why not use that voice to recognise those who 

put in the effort and dedication to help make 

our region a better place. 

“It doesn’t take long to fill out a nomination and 

residents will have until midnight on Saturday 

31 October 2020, so I would encourage anyone 

and everyone who knows someone great to 

get on board and work towards getting them 

the recognition they deserve.”
