One bright, beautiful Sunday morning, everyone in the tiny town of Johnstown got up early and went to the local church. Before the service started, the townspeople were sitting in their pews and talking about their lives, their families, etc. Suddenly, the Devil himself appeared in front of the congregation. Everyone started screaming and running for the front entrance,trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon everyone was evacuated from the church except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew, not moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God’s ultimate enemy was in his presence. Now this confused Satan a bit, so he walked up to the man and said,”Don’t you know who I am?” The man replied, “Yep, sure do.” Satan asked “Aren’t you afraid of me?” “Nope, sure ain’t,” said the man. Lockyer/Ipswich v Gold Coast Blue over 60s Division 2 on Sunday October 18 th at Queens Southport. Brad Hines won the toss and sent the home side in to bat, because he felt that their batting was a little fragile. Gold Coast were in trouble at two down for eight runs but recovered to be all out for 166, which the visitors chased down with nine overs and five wickets to spare. Bill Jeffery took two quick wickets but the home side recovered with David Delaney making a very sound 43 off 32 balls, Tony Pinto a run- a- ball 44, and some useful contributions from the lower order stretched the innings out to the 41st over. The consistency of the visitor’s bowling was greatly improved over their last match, and this was reflected by only four sundries in this innings. Nine bowlers were used, six of them taking wickets. Gold Coast captain Clay Heinz conceded 50 runs off five overs as Lockyer/Ipswich openers The greens at Laidley Golf Club have been Cored and Renovated this week. We are now waiting for Mother Nature to do her job to bring them back to perfect. As advised last week the ladies have been in Bargara for the week. Sunday we played Coral Cove and the winners were: Judy Logan 38 pts, Carolyn Gamble 35 pts and Cheryl Sternberg 34 pts. Monday we played Bargara and the Winners were: Carolyn Gamble 33pts, June Blaney 32 pts and Judy Logan 30 pts. As in the past the wind flags were at odds with the mirage making wind speed decisions difficult. Congrats to N. Panitz, dropping just three points on such a difficult day. Iron Sights out of 105.21. Only one batsman failed to get into double figures as the visitors kept the momentum going and over- took the target with nine overs to spare. MoM for Lockyer/Ipswich was Bill Jeffery, for his three wickets and 14 runs off ten balls. Despite hitting three sixes, Brad Hines did not get the award. Clay Heinz said that the early wickets taken by Jeffery made it very difficult to get back into the game. Gold Coast MoM was David Delaney for his innings which included two sixes and led the Gold Coast fight back. Brad Hines commented that even though a couple of catches were dropped, it was a good all round team effort. The last match of the season is in Toowoomba on November 1 st . LOCAL GROUPS GAIN THOUSANDS THROUGH ‘RESTART INFRASTRUCTURE RECOVERY FUNDING NATHAN GREAVES nathan@thelockyer.com.au Clubs and community organisations throughout the region have benefitted from fresh funding through the government’s Active Restart Infrastructure Recovery Fund. The program provides not-for-profit sport and active recreation organisations with targeted funding for minor upgrades, repairs or maintenance works and equipment that will assist them to re-establish their operations in the wake of COVID-19. So far, more than 1750 organisations state-wide have shared in more than $15.5 million, including more than a dozen from the Lockyer Valley Region. The Gatton Campdraft Association Incorporated received $10,480 to purchase portable fence panels to for their grounds at Grantham, while the Gatton Fordsdale Cricket Club Inc. were given $8,684 to install shade structures and purchase canteen equipment. The Gatton Rugby League Football Club Inc. got $2,370 for use in purchasing canteen equipment, while the Gatton Junior Rugby League Football Club Inc. received $4,675 to repair flooring, and the Gatton Soccer Club Inc. was given $8,082 for the purchase of equipment, including a ride-on mower. The Lockyer Valley Netball Association also received a large payout, being allocated $8,550 for the purchase and installation of safety lighting, and playing, maintenance and office equipment. Lockyer District Athletics Inc. have been afforded $17,740 for the purchase of iPads, training kits and a portable fridge, and install a concrete pad to support athletics at Plainland. In Laidley, the Laidley and District Hack and Pony Club Inc. were awarded $13,914 for the purchase of portable arena panels, and the Laidley Soccer Club Inc. were given $4,635 for the installation of a new irrigation system. Two of the larger payout also went to Laidley clubs, with the Bowls Club being given $12,000 to install a new solar power system, and the Golf Club gaining $18,049 to be used for the repainting of its facilities. Numerous other organisations in areas such as Helidon, Withcott, and Upper Tenthill also benefitted from funding allocations, some of which are pending approval based on other conditions.
