LAIDLEY’S
SECOND WORLD
WAR DIGGER
HONOURED
Laidley RSL Sub-branch member
Alex Blaw found a surprise waiting
for him when he attended the
group’s monthly meeting last
Friday, October 9.
As the Sub-branch’s only surviving Second
World War veteran, Mr Blaw was presented
with his DVA Commemorative Medallion and
Certificate of Commemoration.
The medallion and certificate were produced
by the government to acknowledge the
significance of the 75th anniversary of the end
of the Second World War.
Mr Blaw was presented with his medallion
and certificate by Sub-branch president Tom
Barton.
Mr Barton said the design of the
commemorative certificate and the medallion
are intended to complement each other.
“The design includes the Commonwealth Coat
of Arms, ‘Australia Remembers’ wording and
the dates 1945-2020 denoting the beginning
and end year of 75 years of the anniversary,”
he said. “The certificate is contained within its
own folder, allowing for independent display,
framing and mounting.”
LETTERS, COMMENT & ANNOUNCEMENTS
RESPONSE TO LETTER BY
‘VIVIENNE SCHNELL’
Isn’t it incredible the lengths some will go to in
an attempt to do reputational damage three
weeks before an election.
A recent example of this was the Letter to the
Editor published last week penned by a ‘Ms
Vivienne Schnell’.
‘Ms Schnell’ vainly attempts to question my
character and efforts as the Member for
Lockyer through false claims and outright lies.
I seek to set the record straight.
I am incredibly proud of the work my team
and I have done over the last three years.
Our achievements are well known and have
been outlined in the pages of this publication
on numerous occasions.
‘Ms Schnell’ is correct in one claim.
Ahead of the previous state government
election I did pledge to fix the intersection of
Fairway Drive and the Warrego Highway and I
stand by this pledge.
What ‘Ms Schnell’ fails to mention is the small
detail that this pledge was made based on the
successful election of an LNP government.
The LNP will fix this and a number of other
dangerous intersections on the Warrego
Highway should we be successful at the
upcoming state election from our $75 million
road safety pledge.
‘Ms Schnell’s’ claims that I and the LNP have
turned our backs on Lockyer are about as valid
as her existence.
I note ‘Ms Schnell’s’ statement that she plans to
vote independent at the upcoming election.
I am sure the independent candidate would
be grateful for ‘Vivienne’s’ support, though he
may be somewhat alarmed to learn that the
name ‘Vivienne Schnell’ does not appear on
the electoral roll in Lockyer.
I suspect ‘Ms Schnell’ is simply a pseudonym of
a person hellbent on saying whatever he/ she
can to put my character and commitment to
this electorate into question.
‘Vivienne’ your attacks do nothing but call into
question your own character.
I would suggest you take a break from
Facebook, head to the ECQ’s website and get
your enrolment completed so that you can
contribute to democracy rather than simply
being a commentator.
LABOR EQUALS LNP
Never in my memory have I seen the Labor
Party try to gift a seat in parliament to their so
called idealogical opposite, the LNP.
Whilst I have no affiliation with either, I do of
course know many fine decent people in both
parties.
My farther voted Liberal yet always said there
was a place for good Labor principals, and if
there wasn't a Labor Party no-one would have
had a pay rise in the last 50 years.
So, regardless of your political persuasion it is
troubling to see one major party support the
other at the expense of their own supporters.
What is the Labor party doing, and why?
Of course Labor voters do NOT have to follow
the party How to Vote card if they don't want
to.
Your vote and preferences are yours alone.
That is why I do not even have preferences as I
have made no deals with either side.
JIM SAVAGE’S PLAN TO REVERT
LOCKYER NATIONAL PARK TO
STATE FOREST IS A WINNER
Independent Candidate for Lockyer, Jim
Savage, has won praise from recreational
forest user representatives, for his plan to
revert the Lockyer National Park back to state
forest, paving the way for greater commercial
and recreational use.
The 18,000 hectare Lockyer National Park
was previously a state forest, which was
transferred to state forest in 2008 under
the South East Queensland Native Forestry
Agreement.
“Jim Savage’s plan to revert Lockyer National
Park to state forest, recognises the reality that
Labor’s lock it up and leave approach to native
forests has failed. Our national parks are
overgrown with weeds, overrun by feral pests
and are prone to bushfires”, said Rhys Bosley,
Campaign Manager for the Queensland State
Forest User Alliance and the State Forest
Hunting for Queensland Campaigns.
“Mr Savage’s advocacy for the New South
Wales Forestry Corporation model of
state forest management to be applied
in Queensland, makes him the only local
candidate to have realised that this is the
gold standard for forestry management in
Australia”, Mr Bosley said.
In the NSW model the upkeep of forests is
funded through sustainable logging, with
only 1% of native timber being harvested per
annum and with wide ranging commercial
and recreational use of forests being
permitted. If adopted in Queensland, this
would generate hundreds of millions of
dollars worth of extra value, much of which
would come to electorates like Lockyer, and
would result in better forest management.
Mr Bosley said “Mr Savage has been a longterm
advocate for Lockyer, for regional
Queensland and for legal hunting of feral
pests in Queensland state forests. This
commitment for better managed and utilised
native forests in the electorate represents
another innovative policy from Mr Savage”.
The Queensland State Forest User Alliance
and State Forest Hunting for Queensland
campaigns are online campaigns that have
collectively attracted over 4500 supporters
and have cooperated with groups in the
hunting, recreational prospecting and
fossicking, four-wheel driving, trail bike riding,
mountain bike riding, logging and agricultural
communities.
The campaigns supported two petitions to
Queensland Parliament, one that that raised
13,576 signatures supporting the legalization
of state forest hunting in Queensland, and
another that raised 6080 signatures to prevent
the lockup of Queensland state forests into
national parks. Both petitions were knocked
back by the Labor Government.
THANK YOU ‘THE LOCKYER’
I would just like to congratulate The Lockyer
on the great newspaper you produce. It has
been a few months now that I look forward
to Thursday rolling around to pop down and
pick one up from the local shops.
It is packed full of local stories about our
region and also informs me of any upcoming
events in the area plus I love the format and
focus on our community.
I even keep one for a friend that has left the
area but still likes to keep updated on the
news.
Thanks again for filling the void left in our
region. keep up the great work and come on
LABOR VOTERS TOLD TO VOTE
LNP?
We keep hearing from big party powerbrokers
how the opponent party will destroy our state
with various predictions of job apocalypses,
climate disasters, financial Armageddon, etc,
ad nauseam, if voters elect the 'other' party.
Both claim the high moral ground in
denouncing the other, every single day on
radio, television, print and social media.
Imagine my surprise then to find that the
LABOR party has preferenced the Greens, and
then the LNP.
Those who have followed politics in the
Lockyer electorate know that Labor won't win
this seat, but their preferences largely decide
who does.
Are we to believe now that Labor wants the
LNP to win the seat of Lockyer?
After all that talk about an LNP government
being some diabolical outcome, and
expensive advertising campaigns waxing
hysterical about imagined job purges and so
forth if the LNP were to win, here we see the
Labor party indicating that they actually do
want the LNP to win this seat rather than a
small party or independent candidate.
Do Labor voters know that their candidate
Janet Butler and previous candidate Nicole
Lincoln were the ladies who intervened to
protect Jim Savage's wife Jackie when the
current LNP member physically attacked her
in the street outside the pre-polling centre
in Gatton just prior to the previous state
election?
People should phone them, and ask why they
would agree to give preferences to a man
who assaulted a woman on a public street.
I would have to wonder whether faceless
powerbrokers in the ALP made this decision.
I am not willing to believe that ladies who
had to physically intervene to protect another
candidate's wife from the LNP candidate
would now agree to have their voter's
preferences go to such a man.
I certainly hope voters supporting Labor will
think about who their preferences are going
to help elect.
No point whinging about the LNP when you
are handing them the seat of Lockyer, is there?
ALL POLITICIANS SHOULD BE
DRUG TESTED
Hurray, at last! WIth two local papers Lockyer
Valley residents may get accurate reporting of
local news and perhaps a full accounting of
and coverage of so called suicides, illicit drug
activity and various criminalities.
I shouldn't have to read that my state MP
was subject to CCC investigation from a
neighbouring newspaper The Toowoomba
Chronicle of October 18, 2018.
As regards the then local newspaper, The
Gatton Star, this is unacceptable, also the
refusal regarding our local right of opinion
with letters to the editor. For example a letter
to the editor suggesting that the then muted
correctional centre become a purpose built
detox and rehabilitation centre exclusively
for young drug offenders to keep them apart
from hardened long term criminals.
Despite all the media exposure creating
Shapelle Corby as some sort of celebrity there
is no positive side to drugs. All politicians
should be drug tested and detoxed if
necessary, and then sacked if proving positive.
One wonders if all our political candidates
would be happy to comply with drug testing
as it is time to drain the swamp known as
parliament. How about Gatton? It's time we
got savage on drugs.
COUNCIL SEALS
DEAL ON ROAD
IMPROVEMENT
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
With approximately 500 kilometres
of unsealed road to manage, the
Lockyer Valley Regional Council
deals with dozens of requests
and requirements to repair and
resurface roads.
The latest road section to be considered for
these works is a steep section along Beutels
Road, at Mount Whitestone.
The section in question rises approximately 20
metres in elevation over a 130-metre length,
and residents have reported having issues
with vehicles losing traction on the steep
section of road in both periods of wet weather
and extended periods of dry weather, which
the region has endured for quite some time.
Being a “lower order” road that only services
four properties, works on this section have
not been considered in previous budgets, but
following a site visit by Mayor Tanya Milligan
and Councillor Janice Holstein, consideration
was given to granting requests to improve the
road.
Their visit was in regards to one resident in
particular, who is wheelchair-bound and
unable to safely leave his property using the
steep road in the event of an evacuation being
necessary.
“After meeting with him, and speaking with
him, I’m very sympathetic,” Cr. Holstein said.
“He isn’t some city guy who’s moved out here
and demanded things be changed to suit
him. He was a long-term resident before his
accident.”
She also noted that sealing the surface on
this section of the road would help reduce
maintenance costs for the council.
The council voted to include the road sealing
as part of Councils Capital Works Program for
the 2020/21 financial year.
THE LEGACY OF
QUEENSLAND’S
LAST SUNMAP
AGENCY
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
An enduring part of the Lockyer
Valley’s history for many decades,
the Gatton Sunmap Agency
quietly disappeared during the
COVID-19 lockdowns, and sadly
won’t be returning.
Throughout its existence, the agency was
operated by Jonathan Rudduck, who applied
to run a Sunmap Agency in April 1989.
“My initial map supplier was the Queensland
Department of Lands. Gradually my stocks
increased as I included other products from
Hema and National Mapping,” Mr Rudduck
said.
“But there was one product that did not exist
and for which I was always pestered. ‘Why isn’t
there a local roads and street directory of the
Lockyer region?’ I was asked.”
Embracing the challenge, he commissioned
a local drafting firm to draw up a sheet map
with all the local roads in the area.
The original map was roughly bounded by the
Brisbane Valley Highway from Blacksoil to Esk,
the Hampton / Esk road from Esk to Hampton,
the New England Highway from Hampton to
Toowoomba, the Great Dividing Range from
Toowoomba to Cunningham’s Gap, and the
Cunningham Highway roughly to Blacksoil
along the Little Liverpool Range.
The first map was released as a sheet map with
an index, but was also produced in booklet
form, though work soon began on a new and
improved version.
“I learned a lot about making street directories.
For a start you don’t use a major highway as
a boundary because people who live in the
area not covered want to know ‘why not us as
well’?” Mr Rudduck said.
“Next I learned that I had not covered sufficient
area. Firemen, police, ambos and many other
tradesmen wanted a wider area covered as
well as showing local authority boundaries.”
While Mr Rudduck put these learning
experiences to good use, and continued
offering services and support to locals, he was
eventually forced to relocate the agency.
The office was originally located in Gatton
Shire Council building, but when the shire
library had to be enlarged it took over the
Sunmap Agency site, and several other shops.
Mr Rudduck chose to remain in the Gatton
CBD, and chose to relocate the agency just
across the road at 49 Railway Street, where the
agency remained until 2020.
The agency’s maps were put to the test in
2011, when personnel from the army and SES
found themselves in need of guidance during
the devastating floods.
In 2016, the Department of Natural Resources
and Mines ceased producing Sunmap
products and planned to do away with the
agencies, a decision Mr Rudduck disagreed
with.
“I protested about this decision and as a
result I was allowed to keep the name, Gatton
Sunmap Agency, as I had Sunmap products for
sale,” he said.
“As far as I know I was the last Sunmap agent
in Queensland.”
Though the agency is now closed, some of its
remaining maps and other memorabilia were
donated to the Gatton Historical Society, and
now form part of its collection.
SHADE SAILS
FOR TWO
LOCKYER
VALLEY PARKS
Two Lockyer Valley parks are set to be sun
safe this summer, all thanks to funding
from the Australian Government.
Grantham’s Bugler Park and Littleton Park at
Gatton will soon sport all-new shade sails.
Lockyer Valley Parks, Gardens and Cemeteries
Portfolio Councillor Janice Holstein said
construction at Bugler Park is scheduled to
begin next week, with Littleton Park to follow
shortly after.
“While Bugler Park in Grantham does have a
shelter, a shade sail wasn’t installed at the time
the playground was built and unfortunately
that has meant the park is under-utilised,
simply because it’s too hot during the day in
the warmer weather.
“Thanks to this funding, a new shade sail
is being installed over the playground
equipment, which is an exciting and welcomed
addition to the facility,” Cr Holstein said.
While Littleton Park does have a shade sail, it is
deteriorating and in need of replacement.
“Replacing the existing shade sail will ensure
the playground is not as hot in summer and
will give protection to those who use the
facility,” Cr Holstein said.
For safety requirements, the playground at
Littleton Park will be closed off during the
removal and installation of the shade sail.
It is anticipated this will only take one day.
An area of Bugler Park will be barricaded off
during construction for safety of the public.
Council apologises for any inconvenience
this may cause and thanks residents for their
understanding during the construction phase.
Weather permitting, works will be completed
by late November.
This Project is funded under the Australian
Government’s Drought Communities Program
(DCP) Extension.
FUN FAIR BRINGING
SMILES BACK TO
THE COMMUNITY
In a year that has sadly seen the
cancellation of many community
shows and school fetes, the launch
of the Plainlands Family Fun
Fair over the weekend brought
a welcome display of colour and
cheer to the region.
Taking place in the evenings on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday last week, the fair was
held in the open ground behind McDonalds
at Plainland, with plenty of parking and free
entry
The fair included all of the rides and attractions
one could want, including a giant ferris wheel,
dodgem cars , super slide , rock wall, jumping
castle, sideshow alley, showbags, and much
more.
For those who missed out on the first weekend,
don’t worry, the fair will return from October
23 through to 25, from 5pm to 9:30pm each
day.
Cash and card are both accepted throughout
the stalls.
Organisers are also holding free contests on
the fair’s Facebook page - www.facebook.com/
- offering the chance to win free rides,
showbags, food packages, and much more.
The upcoming state election was discussed with the veterans who are never shy to forward
their opinions that affect the local community.
Every year the Gatton RSL commemorates Remembrance Day and after the completion of this
Member for Lockyer Jim
McDonald (pictured below)
has pledged to have additional
flashing school zone speed signs
installed at some of Lockyer’s
schools if the LNP is successful at
the upcoming state election.
‘Keeping our kids safe is a top priority for
the LNP. I would love to see flashing school
zone signs at each of Lockyer’s 34 schools
but unfortunately that’s not feasible at this
time. Instead I have visited each of Lockyer’s
schools and selected the ones most in need,’
said Mr McDonald.
The seven schools identified as most in need
of flashing signage are Laidley and Lockyer
District High Schools, Helidon State School,
Tarampa State School, Forest Hill State
School, Lockrose State School and Lowood
State School.
‘These schools have been identified as the
most in need through a combination of their
size, potential for growth and location,’ Mr
McDonald said. ‘These are some of Lockyer’s
busiest schools with potential to grow rapidly.
It is important that we get in early and ensure
we do anything we can to protect students,
their parents and staff at the schools.’
While only a small change, Mr McDonald says
the benefits of flashing lights on school zone
signs cannot be overstated.
‘A 2014 evaluation of the impact of flashing
school zone signs in Queensland found that
98% of motorists found it easier to identify
COUNCIL
CALLING FOR
CHANGES TO
COMMITTEE
TERMS
Recent changes have been made
to the terms of reference for the
Lockyer Valley’s Regional Arts
Development Fund committee,
and one councillor has expressed
concerns that these changes could
discourage new members from
joining.
Previously members of the committee
would be able to apply for funding, but in a
process similar to that used by local councils,
would simply be unable to vote on decisions
regarding their own applications, thus
preventing conflict-of-interest issues.
Under the new terms, members of the
committee are outright barred from being
able to apply for funding for themselves,
presenting a major barrier for artists in
the region who want to be involved in the
decision-making, but also to benefit from the
fund.
A minor exception is that if a member is part of
a group, the group itself will be able to apply
for funding, but individual artists would still
be denied funding opportunities under the
current policy if they join the committee.
At a recent meeting of the Lockyer Valley
Regional Council, Councillor Janice Holstein
expressed her disdain for the changed terms.
“Why would we encourage community
members to join this committee if they can’t
put in for the funding?” She asked.
“I disagree with this, and I think we should
contact Arts Queensland about it.”
Fellow councillors agreed further discussion
would be required.
SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY KEY PRIORITY FOR LNP
and know when school zones were in effect
when the zone was marked by flashing signs.
The same study also found that flashing
speed zone signs more than halved instances
of motorists traveling through active school
zones at 10 or more kilometres above the
speed limit.’
Mr McDonald said that while it would be
impossible to stop all drivers from speeding
through school zones, every driver slowed
down by additional signage is a step in the
right direction.
‘As former police office I know the tragic
consequences speeding can have. If these
signs can slow motorists down just a little
that can make a huge difference towards
ensuring our children’s safety.’
COUNCIL
APPROVES
PROMOTIONS
TO
ENCOURAGE
GIFT CARD USE
As part of efforts to support local
buying, plans are underway to
encourage the use of Lockyer
Valley Gift Cards through a new
buy local campaign.
A spiritual successor to the “Town Proud”
initiative once championed by the former
Gatton Star newspaper, the new buy local
promotion is being run by the Lockyer
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and is
intended to run from November through to
December.
Lockyer Valley Gift Cards which will be offered
as prizes throughout the promotion period
to lucky local shoppers, encourage the ‘shop
local’ message, and helping local business
operators with the financial recovery from
COVID-19.
Currently 44 businesses accept Lockyer Valley
Gift Cards, but the promotion will be open
to all businesses who wish to participate,
which the Chamber hopes will encourage
more businesses to engage with the gift card
program.
“They’re opening it up to ball businesses,
free of charge, as a kind of try before you buy
thing,” Lockyer Valley Regional Council Chris
Wilson said.
“This promotion is all about getting these
vouchers into circulation, and they’re hoping
to push it over the Christmas period.”
The Chamber recently wrote to the council,
requesting financial support to assist with the
launch of the promotion.
Councillors agreed to make a contribution,
and also discussed other options for helping
get more of the gift cards out into the
community, such as offering them as prizes at
upcoming events such as the Drought Expo,
and community Christmas carnivals.
Further information about the gift card
program, and the planned promotion, can
be found at the Lockyer Valley Chamber of
SALVOS CELEBRATE OFFICIAL
LAUNCH OF SUPPORT SERVICES
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
The Salvation Army Family Store has been a mainstay of Gatton’s
Railway Street for many years, and over the past month, the store has
vastly extended the services available at the store.
The operations have expanded into the next building over, with the wall between the two
sites taken down to allow more store space, and new offices and community areas.
“The main reason we’ve tried to come over here is because we’re trying to bring all of our
main services over to this side of town,” Auxiliary Lieutenant Rhys Wilson said.
While the store has always been a great place to find affordable items, many of the Salvation
Army’s other support services have been based at their church, which has been confusing to
some visitors.
“We’d have people coming into the shop, looking for some kind of support, and we’d have to
redirect them over to the church,” Rhys said.
“Our intent is to marry all of our services together in one location.”
The store now serves as the base for the organisation’s Money Care financial counsellors, with
consultation rooms and offices for other support services as well.
Visitors can also visit the store to get food through the Salvation Army’s “Second Bite” program
with local supermarkets, or spent some time in the community room to unwind and socialise.
“We’ve got blankets for the colder seasons, a computer there if people need to come in and
do resumes, or check Centrelink,” Rhys said.
“We’ve got a couch here where they can just sit down and have a coffee or tea, a cold drink,
or have a chat.”
Wednesday, October 14 marked the Salvation Army’s yearly Money Care Day celebration, and
also served as the official opening of the new facilities.
There were raffles for visitors, a sausage sizzle, and cake, with local figures such as MP Jim
McDonald dropping by to join in the celebrations.
Pictured below: Auxiliary Lieutenant Rhys Wilson and Member for Lockyer, Jim McDonald cutting
the ridden to open the new expanded facility of the Salvation Army Family Store.
Pictured below right: The fabulous cake that was made to celebrate the day.
New Location For
Financial Support
The main purpose of Wednesday’s celebration
was to acknowledge Money Care Day, an
occasion the Salvation Army acknowledges
annually as part of anti-poverty week.
“Money Care is the Salvation Army’s financial
counselling and financial resilience service,”
financial counsellor Rebecca Denny explained.
“We assist people in financial hardship, we
advocate for them on mortgages, credit cards
and personal loans, car loans, utilities, rent,
that sort of stuff.”
The Salvation Army’s Money Care service is
accessible in Gatton, Laidley, Lowood, and Esk
on different days.
Currently Rebecca works two days a week
from the Gatton office, but there are plans for
a second staff member to begin in the coming
weeks to cover an additional three days a
week.
Though many people have been struggling
with work and finances during the COVID-19
pandemic, there curiously hasn’t been as
much demand for financial counselling as one
might expect.
“Financial counselling dropped nationally by
about 75%. We were all anticipating a huge
influx, and it didn’t happen because a lot of
the things we normally do, people were able
to do for themselves, and people were getting
Jobkeeper and Jobseeker,” Rebecca said.
“We’ve now reached what everyone’s calling
the cliff, so all of the hardship that the bank
was offering as a matter of course has fallen
away, a lot of the entitlements have now fallen
away as well, so now we’re where the rubber
hits the road, and we’re starting the hard work.”
The Money Care financial counselling service is
free to all residents, and there is no benchmark
or hardship requirement for those wanting to
access the service.
“The prerequisite for having financial
counselling is feeling like you need financial
counselling,” Rebecca said.
“We’ll see anyone, we’re just trying to help
people have better outcomes.”
The Salvation Army Family Store is located
at 20 Railway Street in Gatton, and can be
contacted by calling 5462 5273.
SURVEY RESULTS SHED LIGHT
Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald says the
results of his Biggest Community Survey have
highlighted the real issues faced by residents
in Lockyer.
‘In 2019 I had the opportunity to complete Lockyer’s Biggest
Community Survey. The 6923 responses we received clearly
showed what issues matter to Lockyer and what I need to be
fighting for to meet your wishes,’ said Mr McDonald.
Lockyer residents clearly highlighted cost of living; roads, rail
and infrastructure and crime as the three most important
issues in the region.
‘These are the issues I need to be focused on and work hard
to fix.’
The current level of state government debt was also
highlighted as a concern for 66% of respondents, while more
than 80% of respondents believed current sentencing of
criminal offences does not meet community expectations.
Mr McDonald said he has been working towards solutions to
these issues since his election in 2017 and will continue to
do so.
‘I’ve worked hard to see improvements to Lockyer’s roads, to
ease cost of living pressures and to crack down on crime in
our communities, but there is still a lot of work to be done.’
Achievements highlighted by Mr McDonald include securing
two additional police officers at Helidon station and
successfully fighting for more than $5 million of resurfacing
and pavement works on the Brisbane Valley Highway, Forest
Hill Fernvale Road and Brightview Road.
‘I am proud of what my team has achieved so far but there’s
more work to do. If the LNP is successful at the upcoming
election I will deliver a $75 million upgrade program for
the Warrego Highway, $14 million for the Brisbane Valley
Highway and continue to deliver a $15 million business case
for fast passenger rail between Toowoomba and Brisbane.’
‘An LNP government has also committed to no new taxes,
the introduction of real time fuel price monitoring, tougher
sentencing for domestic violence and offences against
children and the reintroduction of breach of bail as an offence.’
The survey results also highlighted Lockyer resident’s opinion
on the quality of health care and education in the electorate.
‘Our teachers and health professionals need to be
commended. More than three quarters of respondents said
that Lockyer’s schools provide a good standard of education,
while nearly 90% of respondents rated our regions health
care as average or better,’ said Mr McDonald.
Lockyer residents should receive the full survey results in
their mail.
For more information or a copy of the results residents are
urged to contact Mr McDonalds office on 5351 6100.
COUNCIL TO
HOST LOCKYER
VALLEY DROUGHT
SUPPORT EXPO
Lockyer Valley Regional Council
will put a spotlight on the drought
and its devastating impact on
rural landholders in the region
when it hosts the Lockyer Valley
Drought Support Expo.
Council is inviting local drought-affected
rural landholders, farmers, farm workers and
farm suppliers to attend the Expo, which will
be held on Wednesday 4 November 2020.
Lockyer Valley Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan
said the Expo will bring together a range of
information and support services for those
dealing with the impacts of the ongoing
drought.
“The Expo will include presentations on
climate outlook, land management, financial
support and structuring; and, importantly,
looking after yourself and your mates.
“The importance of mental health and
wellbeing during an ongoing drought can’t
be overlooked and checking in with your own
mental health, and that of your neighbours,
really is so important,” Mayor Milligan said.
Mary O’Brien from “Are you bogged mate?” is
the event’s key note speaker. Guest speakers
will include the Department of Agriculture
and Fisheries (DAF) on climate outlook,
drought management and financial support.
A LIFE COMMITTED TO COMMUNITY
Reflecting on his life so far,
Member for Lockyer Jim
McDonald remarks ‘It was fun
growing up in the McDonald
household.’
He remembers a house full of laughter and
games, a family committed to one another,
but above all else a family committed to the
community.
‘I had incredible mentors growing up, first
and foremost my mother and father. Their
values were passed onto me and I take great
pride in upholding those values.’
Jim’s father, John McDonald is one of the
greatest rugby league players Toowoomba
ever produced. A Queensland and Australian
representative, John coached Queensland to
victory in the first ever State of Origin series
in 1980 and remains the only State of Origin
coach with a perfect record.
Asked what his greatest contribution to
the sport would be, Jim suggests his father
would not hesitate before nominating his
support and commitment to grass roots
football as his greatest achievement.
‘I am incredibly proud of my Dad and what
he achieved, but I think he is most proud
not of his own playing career, but of what
he was able to achieve in campaigning
for and supporting grass roots football in
Queensland.’
Jim suggests this focus on community
development is a value he holds dear and
has tried to emulate throughout his life.
Joining the Queensland Police Service
straight out of high school, Jim says he has
always aimed to do anything he can to better
local communities.
‘Policing is not all about catching criminals.
Policing is about helping the community
grow and feel safe.’
From serving as a school Adopt-A-Cop
to running blue light discos in Gatton
and Laidley, Jim says it is this community
development work which he highlights as
the most cherished memories of his 32 years
in blue.
Alongside his time as a police officer, Jim
served as a councilor with the Gatton Shire
and then Lockyer Valley Regional Councils.
He highlights this service as another sign of
his devotion to seeing his community be the
best it can be.
‘As a council I served the people of the
Lockyer Valley Region to help them with
anything I could and to ensure their voices
were heard and listened to by decision
makers. This is an ideal I continue to uphold
and work towards in my new role.’
Elected to state parliament in 2017, Jim says
his primary focus is still working hard to help
his community.
‘The Lockyer electorate is a large and diverse
area but my goal for the electorate is clear,
I want to work towards making Lockyer the
best it can be.’
‘We’ve achieved a lot in my first term in
parliament but the work I am most proud
of is the successes we’ve had with giving a
small boost to local community groups.’
Across his term in parliament, Jim and his
team have managed to secure over $16
million of community grants and funding
for over 600 sporting clubs and community
groups and he says it is this work which he
hopes will help secure him a second term in
parliament.
‘I’m proud of all we’ve been able to achieve.
From securing road upgrades, improvements
to our local schools or even something as
small as helping the local football club win a
grant to purchase new equipment, it all adds
up to the betterment of our communities.
I hope with your support to be able to
continue this work. Together, we can build a
better Lockyer and get Queensland working
again.’
Before the service started, the townspeople
were sitting in their pews and talking about
their lives, their families, etc.
Suddenly, the Devil himself appeared in
front of the congregation.
Everyone started screaming and running
for the front entrance, trampling each other
in a frantic effort to get away from evil
incarnate.
Soon everyone was evacuated from the
church except for one elderly gentleman
who sat calmly in his pew, not moving,
seemingly oblivious to the fact that God’s
ultimate enemy was in his presence.
Now this confused Satan a bit, so he walked
up to the man and said,”Don’t you know
who I am?”
The man replied, “Yep, sure do.”
Satan asked “Aren’t you afraid of me?”
“Nope, sure ain’t,” said the man.
Satan was a little perturbed at this and
queried, “Why aren’t youafraid of me?”
The man calmly replied, “I been married to
your sister for 48 years.”
THE LOCKYER - Thursday October 22, 2020 - Page 14
Lockyer/Ipswich v Gold Coast Blue over 60s
Division 2 on Sunday October 18 th at Queens
Southport.
Brad Hines won the toss and sent the home
side in to bat, because he felt that their
batting was a little fragile. Gold Coast were
in trouble at two down for eight runs but
recovered to be all out for 166, which the
visitors chased down with nine overs and five
wickets to spare.
Bill Jeffery took two quick wickets but the
home side recovered with David Delaney
making a very sound 43 off 32 balls, Tony
Pinto a run- a- ball 44, and some useful
contributions from the lower order stretched
the innings out to the 41st over.
The consistency of the visitor’s bowling was
greatly improved over their last match, and
this was reflected by only four sundries in this
innings. Nine bowlers were used, six of them
taking wickets.
Gold Coast captain Clay Heinz conceded 50
runs off five overs as Lockyer/Ipswich openers
The greens at Laidley Golf Club have been
Brad Hines (45 retired off 23 balls) and Keith
Muller (14 off 11 balls) put on 48 in quick time
to take the game away from the home side.
Only one batsman failed to get into double
figures as the visitors kept the momentum
going and over- took the target with nine
overs to spare.
MoM for Lockyer/Ipswich was Bill Jeffery, for
his three wickets and 14 runs off ten balls.
Despite hitting three sixes, Brad Hines did not
get the award. Clay Heinz said that the early
wickets taken by Jeffery made it very difficult
to get back into the game.
Gold Coast MoM was David Delaney for his
innings which included two sixes and led the
Gold Coast fight back. Brad Hines commented
that even though a couple of catches were
dropped, it was a good all round team effort.
GOODNA 44 defeated NORTHS 14
Goodna Eagles won the 2020 covid Volunteers
cup Grand Final defeating Norths Tigers by
44-14. They outclassed Norths running away
with the game in the end. They led 24-0 after
26 minutes but it was still tough going. Rez
Phillips and player of the match Josh Afoa
barged over for tries in the 10th and 20th
minutes respectively (12-0). But in the turning
point of the final, Norths pressured Goodna’s
line and looked like scoring when winger
Fa’ata’ape Timai swooped on a loose Tigers
ball and sprinted almost the length of the
field to score. This took the score to 18-0 after
24 minutes. To make matters worse, Goodna
scored in the next set of six after the restart
when Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga scored beside
the post. (24-0).
LOWOOD BOWLS CLUB
VOLUNTEERS CUP GRAND FINAL - IPSWICH RUGBY LEAGUE
One of Norths best players Ethan Page scored
for the tigers next to get them on the board.
But at the stroke of half time Timai leapt
high to score his second try out wide to get
Goodna to a 28-4 half time lead.
After half time, Norths Fullback Luke Self
injected himself into the game and handled
the ball twice to score for the Tigers and give
some hope for his side (28-10)
The pressure in the next period was just too
much for Norths as Goodna won the grind
and wore their opponents down. Tries to
Elone Taufa, Chris Schwalger and Trivendra
Naidu put the game beyond doubt for
Goodna who led 44-10 after 68 minutes.
Norths Tonga Muonga scored a consolation
try for the Tigers and the final score was 44-
14.
Goodna’s big men won the day. Their bench
players where superb when they entered the
field. There was not a bad player in the Eagles
outfit. But Josh Afoa was excellent and won
the Jim Foreman player of the match. His
early yards were tremendous and he made a
difference.
Eagles lock Saunda Seumanutafa tackled
all day and played above his weight. Ben
Niumata, Rez Phillips, Wilson Malesilia and
Ramon Filipine were solid in the middle.
Bessie Aufaga-Toomaga did not have much
opportunity but when he did, it was gold. His
try was good in the 26th minute but when
he grubber kicked for Elone Taufa to score in
52nd minute, he showed his magic.
Norths Tigers certainly deserved to be in the
Grand Final but their completion rate let them
