2018 Brings Two Exciting New Ventures For Edgcote Gallops
NEWS
Edgcote Gallops, based on the
Northants/Oxfordshire border,
have two exciting new
ventures for 2018, Edgcote Races
and the new training gallops.
Edgcote Races boasts a new Point
to Point course and will be running
three meetings each season;
The Grafton, Bicester Hunt with
Whaddon Chase and the Farmers
Bloodhounds.
The stunning new course is set on
the historic grass gallops where
renowned National Hunt horses such
as Spanish Steps, Royal Relief and
Tiberetta were trained by Edward
Courage in the 1950s and 60’s. The
new site is hidden away in the rolling
countryside on the south corner of
the Wills Estate and offers fantastic
viewing. The recent Grafton meeting
proved very popular with both the
racing community and public and
provided a very popular family day
out.
The facilities at Edgcote already
boast a stunning 6-furlong hill gallop
which has recently been resurfaced
with Safetrack by Andrews Bowen.
This surface is consistent and highly
durable designed to provide the
finest racing surface. This is being
complimented with the completion of
a brand new oval 1km track also
boasting the excellent Andrews
Bowen surface.
As well as it’s oval design allowing
softer turns so horses can train at
higher speeds than on the existing
round gallop, it will have a jumping
straight 8 meters wide allowing for
hurdles to be used on the surface.
This project will be finished with
Duvalock Oval Racerail.
These gallops are home to two
successful National Hunt Trainers
Alex Hales and Ben Case but are
opened to the public for hire after
11:30 am Monday - Saturday and all
day Sunday.
For the Eventers these gallops will
also have permanent minute markers
for all levels and Sarah Gairdner from
Danesmoor Eventing will be running
a series of speed and fitness clinics.
All are welcome to come and hire the
gallops. For more information find the
Facebook and Twitter pages
ACUPUNCTURE
Veterinary Advice…
What Does It Involve?
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture has been used in human medicine for thousands
of years. More recently research has shown a scientific basis
behind the process; which has put it firmly in place as a
credible complementary therapy.
Acupuncture in animals is regarded as a veterinary procedure
and as such can only be performed by a qualified veterinary
surgeon.
It entails placing very fine needles into specific points or
muscles on the body. The needles trick the brain into
producing a variety of naturally occurring chemicals, including
potent painkillers such as endorphins. As a result, we are
able to achieve natural pain relief as well as other positive
effects on the body, such as relaxation.
The procedure is not painful as the needles are very thin, but
it can produce some discomfort, especially if the muscles are
very tight and painful. Sometimes a short acting sedative is
given to prevent the horse tensing up and so resisting the
positive effects of acupuncture. The horse’s action is not
affected, only enhanced by sedation as the horse is more
relaxed and tolerates the procedure better.
What Can It Treat?
Equine Acupuncture can be used to treat a number of
conditions in horses - including muscular spasm
throughout the body, especially neck and spinal pain;
chronic arthritic processes such as Spavin and
Ringbone, as well as Temporo-Mandibular joint
tension (jaw pain) which can cause schooling issues.
Equine Acupuncture can also be used to loosen off
tight muscles following exercise, helping horses who
compete in Dressage/Eventing and Show Jumping.
Sometimes lameness examinations don’t yield
satisfactory or definitive results. These cases could be
down to a “Myofascial Pain Syndrome” where there is
a characteristic pain referral pattern and these cases
respond really well to acupuncture.
Aside from musko-skeletal pain acupuncture may
provide some relief to those horses suffering from
frequent spasmodic colic episode, head shaking, and
skin conditions.
Conditions triggered by stress may be alleviated by
acupuncture.
What Does It Cost?
The first treatment is £55.43 excluding visit and any subsequent treatment is £44.30 excluding visit.
In most cases treatment can be claimed through your insurance as an alternative therapy.
Please contact Serena at the surgery if you would like to discuss the potential benefits and treatment that would be
best for your horse or donkey.
Short Breaks
A concept Foxhill has pioneered and become synonymous with is the
equestrian mini-break. With pony clubs, riding clubs, groups of friends and
horse.
Every stay is tailored to people’s needs with a focus on relaxing and
Unique to Foxhill is the combination of equestrian facilities, miles of
off-road hacking, farmhouse accommodation and dedicated stabling all
on the farm, meaning there is no need to travel during your stay.
Riding isn’t the only thing that you can do at Foxhill, their links with many
other local companies mean that you can also enjoy wine tasting, clay
pigeon shooting or even cooking classes during your stay! All of which
come to the farm.
Whilst every stay has its own twist, a typical weekend comprises of
everyone arriving on Friday evening where dinner is served in the
farmhouse. On Saturday and Sunday breakfast and lunch is served
alongside tuition in the morning and afternoon. The format of the day for
riding is always highly flexible with Lesley and her team often taking
multiple groups focusing on various disciplines throughout the day, even
if it is just going for a hack and a chat. Dinner on Saturday can be in the
farmhouse or at the local pub depending on group preferences.
Location
Foxhill is located in an ideal location, close to many National Trust sites,
the Silverstone Circuit, Towcester Racecourse and numerous wedding
Lesley, comments “People of all ages are living such busy lives now that
they rarely get time to truly get away for a few days, particularly with their
the weekend whilst giving them access to all our fantastic facilities and
helpful tuition. We believe that we have a really special venue and
The weekend was well thought through, enjoyable,
informative and carried out at our pace. I left full of
confidence and raring to go! Can’t wait to go back
even if it is just for the lunch which was excellent too.
“
XC Course
Take advantage of Foxhill's professionally designed cross
country course, 80 x 40m all weather ménage and grass
surface show jumping arena with one-to-one lessons, day
and residential clinics or simply hiring the facilities.
Foxhill's cross country course was built and designed by Hugh Lochore, one
of the UK’s leading course designers. It includes a wide variety of fences
from approximately 75cm to 110cm and incorporates many of the types of
fences often used in British Eventing courses.
Also located at Foxhill is an 80 x 40m rubber surface ménage and grass
surface. These facilities are also open to hire all year round.
The Scales Of Training
Part 2
Contact and Impulsion
With Tom Fray
BHS Stage 4 Senior Coach in Complete Horsemanship
In the last issue of Northants Horse Trader Magazine (April – June 2018)
I wrote “The Scales of Training – An Introduction to Rhythm and
Suppleness” and that each scale should be achieved before moving on
to the next and each scale as a direct effect on the success of the
subsequent scale. We considered the effect a rider has on the horse’s
natural balance and therefore his rhythm and how the balance of the
rider and the reactivity of the horse to the aids affect the horse’s rhythm
when ridden. I then suggested an exercise to help develop the horse’s
rhythm and suppleness.
There are many exercises that will help a horse develop suppleness, providing
the rider is in balance and has taught the horse to react appropriately to the
aids. A balanced rider will always help the horse to settle into a good rhythm
from which the rider can then look for ways to develop the suppleness through
movements around the school.
Suppleness can be described as the ease of the range of movement and has
two effective directions, longitudinally i.e. over the horse’s back and laterally
i.e. along the horses back. Working the horse in a rounder outline develops
longitudinal suppleness with him ‘lifting’ under the saddle and adopting a
‘rainbow’ shape over his back. Lateral suppleness is developed through
bending the horse around your inside leg. Don’t forget, bend can be to either
the inside or outside of the direction of travel – in other words, if you are on a
circle on the right rein you can bend the horse to the left, your left leg becomes
the inside leg and your right rein becomes the outside hand. A truly supple
horse will work easily in either bend on either rein.
So, we now come to consider ‘Contact’ and ‘Impulsion’ which are scales 3 and
4. Firstly, let us think about contact, what is contact? Well, contact is the feeling
you have down the rein, it is the direct link between your hand and the horse’s
mouth. Contact is achieved by riding the horse forward from your leg to the
hand. This is probably a term you have heard used plenty of times. Describing,
and therefore understanding, contact is not an easy thing but essentially you
should be looking for an elastic feel down the rein, your arm should be firm
and yet your elbow soft, it sometimes helps to think of your elbow and shoulder
as ‘well lubricated’. Suppleness can be described as the difference between
a new hinge and a rusty hinge, they both move but the rusty hinge gets stuck,
the new hinge moves freely and easily. Your elbows provide the elastic feel
the horse needs to work into in order to give a good ‘forward seeking’ contact.
Here we just need to remind ourselves of the importance of the rhythm and
suppleness, these first two scales are not forgotten – they are always there
and are always required before achieving a good contact. It is essential that
the horse is reactive to your aids in order for you to be able to effectively ride
him forward from the leg to the hand.
Here is one exercise I find useful when working on an improved contact, this
exercise can be used in any pace but the most straightforward one to start
with is the trot:
●
●
●
●
●
●
The Scales are:
1. Rhythm
2. Suppleness
3. Contact
4. Impulsion
5. Straightness
6. Collection
Once down to approximately 10m circle, hold that circle for a couple
of circuits ensuring you have a soft inside rein which allows the horse
to step through from behind.
Then you start to use an increased inside leg aid to ‘enlarge’ the
outside of the horse’s body and increase the size of the circle.
Make sure the horse does not over-bend to the inside, the amount of
bend should not change too much and must be through the whole
body, not just the neck.
As you enlarge the outside of his body and allow the circle to become
gradually bigger you will be developing an improved inside leg to
outside hand connection and therefore an improved contact in the
outside rein.
It is essential that the inside rein stays soft – you can test this with
small give and re-takes of the inside rein throughout the whole exercise.
Repeat this ‘spiral-in/spiral-out’ exercise several times on each rein.
●
●
●
Start working the horse on a 20m circle, make sure he is swinging
forward in a nice rhythm and supple trot.
Then begin to spiral the circle smaller, take your time, reducing the
circle by just one or two meters on each revolution.
Ensure the reduction in circle is even and the circle remains round and
does not become egg-shaped.
23
Once you feel you have achieved this you can move on to a very simple
figure of 8 exercise to develop a more consistent change of bend. The way
to do this is to:
●
●
●
●
●
Ride (in trot to start with) large round the arena, concentrating on
inside leg to outside hand through the corners.
Change the shape of the way you ride round the short sides of the
arena to almost a half 20m circle at each end.
Then start to ride changes of rein along both long diagonals, so you
are constantly changing the rein with a half circle at each end, this
would look like a tall thin figure of 8 rather than a round ‘bumblebee’
figure of 8.
As you ride the figure of 8 think about the inside leg to outside hand
feeling on the half circle and then when you ride straight across the
diagonal you need to ‘pick-up’ the old inside rein so you have an
even feel down both reins.
Before arriving at the start of the new half circle on the new rein you
need to prepare the new inside rein through a few ‘feel and give’
motions down the rein. As you give the rein you should back-up
increased inside leg to outside hand connection by nudging with the
new inside leg to the new outside hand.
4
1 2
3
●
Ride the new half circle and immediately change the rein on the next
long diagonal repeating the above step of picking up the old inside
rein and connecting the horse from both legs into both hands before
preparing the new inside rein with a series of ‘feel and give’ motions
down the rein backed up with the new inside leg.
As you consistently ride this exercise the horse has to remain supple
through to the bit and the consistent feel down the rein become elastic
through the constant change of rein and adjustment from one inside leg to
outside hand connection to the other.
The most important thing to remember here is that it is always leg first;
contact is achieved through riding the horse forward from leg to a ‘forward
thinking hand’, not a blocking hand.
These exercises build on the rhythm and suppleness exercises you will be
doing with your horse and help develop increased lateral suppleness as
well as an improved contact.
A forward thinking hand and a
soft elbow allows the hind leg to
swing through and push the
horse forward
Allowing with a soft elbow
Firm hand,
soft elbow
Impulsion is achieved when the horse takes more weight on his
hindquarters in order to perform movements with a greater degree of
engagement and cadence. The image at the bottom of this page shows the
relationship between the hind leg coming ‘through’ and under the horse in
order for him to lift under the saddle and take more weight through his
hindquarters, note the position of the head and how impulsion would be
compromised by a hand that is pulling back and not allowing the horse to
travel forward.
A shorter rein with a forward thinking hand will shorten the frame of the
horse and through the later scales of training will achieve greater collection.
Let us focus on improving impulsion, essentially what we are trying to
achieve is a greater degree of controlled ‘push’ from behind. The horse
should bring his hind leg well under his body and take more weight on his
hind leg for an increased period of time, leading to the impression he is
taking a longer, slower, step with a greater degree of ‘lift’ or cadence in
each step. This is developing the horse’s longitudinal suppleness, creating
the ‘rainbow shape’ over his back.
The moment from ‘almost’ walk into trot encourages
Improved hind leg action as long as the hand allows the
hind leg to come through from behind
Inside flexion, soft hand…
There is one simple way of improving impulsion and that is through
transitions. Repeated transitions will encourage the horse to engage more
from behind – the trick is to ensure the transitions are performed in an
rhythmical, supple manner with a good contact – it is no coincidence that
these are the first three stages of the scales of training! Hopefully you can
see how things are fitting together now and how each scale affects the
subsequent scale.
Here is one more exercise to work on:
●
●
●
●
●
●
Trot a 20m circle.
Make a transition to walk anywhere on the circle, keeping the leg on
and push the hind leg through to the front leg, imagine riding the
hind legs into the space between the front legs.
Don’t forget to use a forward thinking hand – do not block the hind
leg action by pulling on the rein but maintain a good elastic contact.
Walk for 5 steps and then ride forward to trot again.
Repeat this several times around the circle.
Then move on to just 3 walk steps each time and repeat several
times.
Repeating this exercise will help develop an improved trot with greater
impulsion and longitudinal suppleness – you are looking for an increased
moment of suspension where the horse is taking more weight on his
hindquarters, slowing the tempo but maintaining rhythm to ultimately
achieve improved impulsion. This can only happen if he is allowed to lift
under the saddle and lighten the front-end, the contact should lighten a little
– if it becomes heavier then he is balancing on your hand and not taking the
weight on his hind-quarters. If this happens then go back to the earlier
stages of the above exercise and ensure you are not allowing him to
balance on your hand by maintaining a quick and light leg aid into a supple
and forward thinking contact. In simple terms, use your leg to maintain
activity and don’t pull back!
The next steps from here are to develop improved straightness and
ultimately a greater degree of collection through stages five and six of the
scales of training.
Good luck with your homework!
In the next issue…
Scales 5 & 6 - Straightness & Collection
●
●
●
Once established, continue with the transition to walk but only for
one step this time, repeat this several times around the circle.
Your horse should be getting the idea of what is coming so you can
use this anticipation as an opportunity to refine your aids.
Now start to ride a transition from trot to walk but just before he
walks ride away in trot – repeat this several times.
Trying these
exercises?
Forward thinking hand…
●
Use the moment from the ‘almost walk’ to trot to really exaggerate
the push from behind – don’t rush him but keep a light and active leg
aid to encourage a quick and active hind leg action from your horse.
The horse Tom is riding in the photos in this article is called ‘The Good Omen’
Doma Vaquera:
The Art Of The Stockman
By Peter Maddison-Greenwell
"Out in the country, many centuries ago, among the Ginetes, la doma
vaquera was born, and subjected to the exigencies proper to an art in which
life and death are but two sides of the same coin.” - Quoted from the
book “This is the Spanish Horse" by Juan Llamas
The art of the mounted stockman, or cowboy, is the ability to work cattle
quietly, safely and efficiently, and to do that well he needs a highly trained
equine partner. In Spain, la doma vaquera encompasses the finely honed
and precise skills of the stockman and his horse – not least of which is
horsemanship – whether they are performed on the ranches or in the
competitive arena. The work of the vaquera rider is fascinating. True
vaquera riders are like the country, gritty and tough, and they must be
strong, resourceful and resilient. They are by nature hard-working, hardplaying
men, full of passion and love for their horses and their bulls; and a
more sporting, honourable and generous breed of mankind you will never
meet.
The definition of ‘doma’ is ‘dressage’ (from the French verb ‘dresser’: to
dress or train a horse), thus la doma vaquera could be said to be the
dressage of the stockman.
‘Vaquero’¹ means ‘cowboy’ but I prefer to think of these industrious and
honourable men of Spain – and the Americas – as stockmen because,
unfortunately, in England in particular, the word ‘cowboy’ has become a
derogatory term for a shoddy workman.
The Spanish masculine noun ‘vaquero’ means cowboy or stockman, and as
an adjective it means ‘in the style of’ or ‘belonging to’ a cowboy or stockman.
In Spanish, however, the gender of the ending of an adjective agrees with
the gender of the ending of the noun; thus as ‘doma’ is a feminine noun, in la
doma vaquera, the adjective is ‘vaquera’ and not ‘vaquero’.
On unfenced land, man and horse have to display the epitome of control in
the movements which are part of their everyday work; this control is
essential when working the bulls. The vaquera rider is neither always
attractive nor necessarily elegant, and not every rider or horse will have
what it takes to make a Spanish champion. But that which many
competition-dressage riders struggle to do with both hands on the reins in
the quiet serenity of a level, well-marked-out arena, the stockmen will
perform as a matter of course on hard, rough ground and in relentless heat.
The execution and timing of their passes, turns on the haunches and the
forehand, changes of leg, half pirouettes, reining back and exact and
immediate halts, would be the envy of many a dressage competitor.
Many vaquera riders still train
their horses in the same way
their fathers and grandfathers
did and, although some of their
methods may appear
somewhat crude to many, it
must be remembered that
there are good and bad
trainers and riders in every
equestrian field. Life in the
country can still be harsh, and
the working horses are not
ridden purely for pleasure; they
have a job, a potentially
dangerous job, to do and the
safety and wellbeing of both
horse and rider is at stake. If a
horse is brought to a halt a little
more abruptly or turned a little
more forcefully than would
normally be acceptable
because he is in danger of
being caught by the horns of a
bad-tempered bull, then it is far
more forgivable than doing the
same when a horse simply has
to carry out the less lifethreatening
activities of halting
at X or turning down the school
at A.
Matt has spent over 25 years teaching,
coaching, schooling, rehabilitating, backing
and restarting horses. Over the years Matt
has seen many of his clients face huge
difficulties with Fear which has affected the
understanding and communication between
horse and rider.
Fear is something that Matt can relate to,
having broken his back in a fall a few years
ago he too had to face the Fear ‘demons’.
This led him to start training as a life coach
where he found the 3 principles of life;
which took him to a new level of
understanding the human mind and how
Fear worked. This understanding has
enabled him to help so many people in a
much more effective way; giving his clients
the control over their Fear, rather than
being reliant on the instructor being there to
give them confidence.
Fear is something so many of us suffer
from. This can prevent us from doing the
things we really love to do. It can stop us
from enjoying our horses and can start to
make a rider feel low and even contemplate
giving up! It can even stop you from
seeking help because we are Fearful of
being judged. This is exactly why Matt has
created Think-Feel-Ride which is a
confidence programme, designed to put
you back in control of your Fear and
allowing you to develop the tools to
build a stronger partnership and
understanding with your horse. By
putting you back in control of your
Fear you are then able to push
your Fear away and move forward.
With a deeper understanding of
our own mind and that of our
horses; developing the way
to connect the Thinking -
Feeling - Riding together;
creates a life long understanding
that stays with you as you
continue your journey.
Matt's depth of understanding of the
horses mind and their feelings has
strengthened even more since working with
and understanding his partners work;
Richard Geldard, Animal Communicator
and Medium. Richard’s work has helped
Matt with his clients on many occasions.
Matt's clients have also found it useful for
Richard to do readings or visits with their
horses whilst working through the Think-
Feel-Ride programme with Matt.
Matt and Richard’s passion is to help
horses along with their carers, to
understand each other and to find a clearer
way to communicate; which will build a
partnership that is based on trust and
where Fear has no place.
Matt & Richard are based in south
Leicestershire/Northamptonshire border,
you can visit their base with your horse or
they can travel to you. Also available are
clinics, workshops and short stay
equestrian retreats held around the
country. If you are unable to travel then
there is the option of online help available
to you. There really is an option for
everyone, so please get in touch with Matt
to arrange your consultation.
