NEED ARTWORK ?
Molly is just moving into year 11 and so has a busy year ahead studying for
her GCSE’s, she’s unsure of what career path she wants to take at this stage
but wants to take A-Levels in Maths and English. Charlie (more fondly
known as Cob!) is a young 8, he’d had very little schooling and handling for
his age before Molly got him 2 years ago. Molly worked very hard with him
and has brought him on nicely, they’ve also enjoyed a few wins at local
dressage competitions. Molly is also working on building his jumping ability
now so they can go out and compete in some showjumping. They
absolutely adore each other - I think the front cover photo catches this
perfectly! The photo is courtesy of Niki Wright Photography
Use of EquiSal Tapeworm saliva testing
for best practice worm control –
D
straight from the horse’s mouth!
r Corrine Austin looks after her horses using ‘best practice’ methods that are core to basic horse care/health.
After years of carrying out worm egg counts to determine whether her horses needed worming for redworm
or roundworm, and conducting expensive blood testing for tapeworm, she set out to find a way to test for
tapeworm that is easy to carry out and not costly. As an experienced scientist she set up the Austin Davis Biologics
laboratory and researched diagnostic methods to test for tapeworm. Out of this research, Corrine and her team
discovered that you could detect tapeworm infections by measuring anti-tapeworm antibodies in saliva. The method
proved to be very accurate and reliable, diagnosing all pathogenic tapeworm infections (validation published in
Veterinary Clinical Pathology journal 1 ). The test is similar to a blood test but uses saliva instead which can easily be
collected by horse owners and returned to the EquiSal laboratory in Northamptonshire for testing.
EQUINEHEALTH
Corrine’s own horses are routinely tested and since developing the test in 2013,
they have only been given praziquantel (anti-tapeworm wormer) when EquiSal
saliva testing has shown they are infected with tapeworm. Worms are becoming
increasingly resistant to wormers as a result of the drugs being overused, or used
routinely without proof that they are required. The best way to prevent worm
resistance is to reduce the number of wormers your horse receives.
International show jumper, Tim Stockdale, has been very successful in reducing
the number of wormers used on his yard. Prior to using EquiSal Tapeworm testing,
the horses were receiving the recommended twice a year treatment for tapeworm.
During the last 4 years they have conducted EquiSal Tapeworm testing, only 8
horses have needed tapeworm treatment, meaning just 8 doses of praziquantel
have been used on Tim’s yard instead of 160 doses if they had continued with
routine treatment! Tim tells us “I take my horses’ welfare very seriously and this
professional scientific approach to diagnosing worm burdens is the way forward”.
The yard has a much lower risk of resistant tapeworm, so when a horse is
confirmed as having an infection, Tim can be confident that the wormer will be
effective.
Using the EquiSal Tapeworm saliva test, it is possible to repeat the test 2-3 months
after worming to determine if treatment has been effective and whether an
additional dose is required. This has been invaluable for Corrine’s horses as after
many years of having low diagnoses, Ama’s saliva score increased, indicating she
had become infected with tapeworm. Ama received praziquantel-based wormer
and her saliva score reduced over a period of several weeks. However, before
reducing to ‘low’, her saliva score increased significantly suggesting reinfection.
An additional praziquantel dose was administered and the saliva score reduced
to below the treatment cut-off and remained so. If follow up testing had not been
conducted, Ama would have maintained the tapeworm infection until the next
routine testing and the cycle would continue.
EquiSal Tapeworm testing is easily incorporated into your horse’s worm control
programme. Simply test every 6 months at a time when you would normally
consider treating for tapeworm. Saliva collection kits are available from veterinary
practices and SQPs. Visit www.equisal.com for more information or to see a list
of stockists.
1
Lightbody, K. L. et al. (2016) Vet Clin Path, 45: 335–346
Corrine is often asked about tapeworm control by horse owners, and a common
theme after the first test is surprise that their horse has an infection, despite
carrying out regular worming. In these cases, once or twice a year treatment has
not been effective at maintaining a healthy balance and horses end up with
constant infection, broken briefly by the worming dose, only to become reinfected
at a later date. In these cases it is important to know what you are dealing with
and whether to target doses more often to break the tapeworm life cycle and
therefore reduce the horse’s risk of reinfection. This strategy, together with good
pasture management, can help to prevent constant infection and enable the horse
owner to better manage tapeworm infections.
The company’s vision for EquiSal Tapeworm is to provide the test to horse owners
as cheaply as possible. To do this, the small family run company invested in robotic
systems which have transformed the laboratory to a high throughput operation
and keeps overhead costs to a minimum. The cost of the test includes a saliva
collection kit, return postage of the sample and laboratory testing.
Corrine’s team are also heavily involved with research into horse worm infections
including tapeworm life cycle and diagnostic tests for other important horse worms,
including an encysted redworm test in collaboration with the Moredun Institute.
Collaborator Professor Jacqui Matthews emphasises “Frequent (including
unnecessary) drug use has been shown to speed wormer resistance, which
decreases the effectiveness of the few chemicals that we have to treat serious
worm burdens in horses. We must ensure that use of wormers is carefully
considered and, preferably, administered after a positive diagnostic test.”
STRAIGHTNESS
IMPULSION
SUPPLENESS
RHYTHM
In parts one and two of this series I discussed the first four
of ‘The Scales of Training’. Here I will discuss the final two
scales:
9 NorthantsHorseTrader Magazine
STRAIGHTNESS
COLLECTION
It is essential that whenever you approach your training programme, you are
aware of all of ‘The Scales of Training’ and the progressive order in which
they run, with the relative influence of each scale. Rhythm is the foundation
of the pyramid and each subsequent scale is supported by the previous
one:
You should use the scales of training every time you ride your horse and
develop them over the lifetime of your horse’s training. If you are struggling
with your schooling sessions, remember the scales of training and return to
the foundations of Rhythm and build from there.
Younger horses need to develop Rhythm through a balanced rider, I wrote
about achieving Rhythm in the ‘The Scales of Training – An Introduction to
Rhythm and Suppleness’ (Northants Horse Trader April – June 2018).
Essentially all horses have Rhythm but as we introduce a rider we affect
their balance, which has an effect on their Rhythm. As the horse becomes
stronger and better balanced his Rhythm improves and he is ready to move
on to suppling exercises.
Rhythm can be described as the regularity of the beat, the beat being the
footfalls of the pace. Once the young horse is more established in Rhythm
you can work on his Suppleness, which is described as the ease of the
range of movement. A supple horse is even in the reins and moves freely
forward in balance throughout his schooling movements and transitions.
As Rhythm and Suppleness develops you will find that Contact naturally
improves, once you have a horse that works in a good Rhythm, is supple
throughout his body and is working into a forward thinking Contact you can
move towards achieving Impulsion as described in ‘The Scales of Training
Part 2 – Contact and Impulsion’ (Northants Horse Trader July - August
2018).
Increasing Impulsion is described as achieving a greater degree of
controlled ‘push’ from behind. The horse should bring his hind leg well under
his body and take more weight on it for an increased period of time, leading
to the impression he is taking a longer slower step; with a greater degree of
‘lift’ or cadence in each step. This is developing the horse’s longitudinal
Suppleness, creating a ‘rainbow shape’ over his back.
Once the horse is working in a supple manner both laterally (side to side)
and longitudinally (front to back over his topline) he can be ridden with an
increasing demand for greater levels of Impulsion. He needs to be able to
manage these demands without losing Rhythm, Suppleness and balance.
The horse needs to develop greater strength in his hind quarters in order to
achieve this greater degree of Impulsion.
When considering Straightness the rider should firstly ensure they
themselves are straight and balanced in the saddle – the only way you can
really check this is to either use mirrors in the arena or ask someone to
watch you riding, preferably a qualified instructor. If the rider is straight they
can sit in balance and have a positive influence over the horse’s
Straightness. It is essential that you approach Straightness after correctly
training them through the earlier scales we have talked about. There are
many ways an experienced rider is able to straighten a crooked horse, but
that is fixing a problem, if you have truly followed the scales of training and
have a supple horse working forward with Rhythm and Impulsion into a
forward thinking and even Contact then the horse should be straight.
As mentioned earlier, a balanced rider sitting straight, using mirrors or ‘eyes
on the ground’, should now be able to ensure the horse is travelling straight.
Straightness is simply described as the hind legs ‘following’ the forelegs
which are ‘following’ the horse’s head. As a rider, if the neck of the horse
you are riding is straight and the Contact is even in both hands and both of
the horse’s hind legs are coming through from behind then you have a
straight horse. I have used the word ‘through’ here, this is commonly used
when describing a horse that is lifting in his back and stepping under himself
with his hind legs with a ‘swing’ in his step through a supple back.
If you are retraining a horse that is crooked you should consider the earlier
scales of training, is he in Rhythm? Is he supple? What is the Contact like?
Can I achieve greater Impulsion whilst maintaining Rhythm, Suppleness and
an even Contact? Working on the earlier scales of training will help develop
a stronger and straighter horse as well as developing greater control of the
hindquarters through lateral work to help to correct crookedness. To help a
crooked horse achieve Straightness you can develop Suppleness and
strength through various lateral movements such as Shoulder-in, Travers
(quarters-in) and Renvers (quarters-out). These movements are all part of
the training you should be doing to develop Suppleness and strength
leading to greater Impulsion. A crooked horse can be straightened, but a
well-trained horse should be straight and so always reflect on your training
and make sure strength and Suppleness are in place before asking for
Impulsion and then allowing Straightness to follow.
An easy exercise to ensure Straightness is maintained in a correctly trained
horse is to use the medium paces. For example, ride the horse into countercanter
going large around the arena, make a transition to medium canter on
the long-side and return to working canter before the corner. Ensure the
neck is straight in front of you and use mirrors or eyes-on-the-ground to
check for Straightness and repeat.
The key thing to remember here is that if you have correctly worked through
‘The Scales of Training’ then Straightness comes from the first four scales
combining together to give you a more complete picture of a trained horse.

Straightness comes with time as these first four scales are achieved and the
horse is strong and confident in self-carriage.
TRAINING
Collection is described as the horse taking greater weight of both himself and
his rider on to his hind leg resulting in a shorter and more energetic step. The
poll becomes the highest point and the overall impression is of a shorter and
more uphill frame with freedom in the shoulder achieving greater elegance
and expression.
The horse in the image on the right (top) illustrates collection through a
raised back and forehand, so that the horse carries more weight on his
hindquarters. Compared to a trot that is simply shortened, but not collected
(bottom).
Working on Collection can be divided into collecting exercises and collected
exercises. Collecting exercises are generally executed with the horses head
and neck in a slightly longer and lower position allowing him to use his back
more to achieve greater weight carriage on his hind leg. Collection is the
pinnacle of the horse’s training and, as with Straightness, it is achieved
through perfecting the previous scales of training. It is only a rhythmical and
supple horse that is moving forward into a good Contact with Impulsion and
Straightness that can be ridden into Collection.
Collected exercises, such as the collected gaits, Piaffe, Passage and Canter
Pirouettes are generally ridden in a shorter frame and come as a result of the
collecting exercises.
Essentially, Collection is achieved through working the horse into greater
Impulsion within a shorter frame which is achieved through a lowering of the
hindquarters and not a tightening of the hand and front-end. If you are
working towards Collection and the horse stiffens in the poll, jaw or back and
drops off the Contact then he is not ready for Collection and you would need
to look back to improving the earlier stages of the scales of training to ensure
they are well established and the horse has the strength to manage the
demands of the work.
Photo Credit: By Renate Blank - Klaus Schöneich Zentrum für Anatomisch richtiges
Reiten® & Schiefen-Therapie®, CC BY-SA 2.5,
Exercises to develop Collection can be very simple, such as transitions within
the paces, the key here is to ensure Straightness, Impulsion and Suppleness
are maintained. For example, if you are working the horse within canter
and moving between medium, working and collected canter than the
transitions should be smooth, achieved with light responsive aids
and with the horse remaining straight and in self-carriage.
A quick leg maintains the activity and a correct and straight rider
position supports the horse and allows him to balance himself
through self-carriage into a light Contact. The use of a correct
half-halt through a virtually imperceptible simultaneous use
of leg, seat and hand to make the horse wait and engage
momentarily within a stride is essential in achieving greater
Collection.
In conclusion, as you move towards Straightness and
Collection you will discover the importance of the correct
training of Rhythm, Suppleness, Contact and Impulsion.
Straightness and Collection come as a result of this
training process and are demonstrative of the horse’s
overall way of going. The collected exercises in the higher
level of dressage demonstrate the correct training of the
horse and the training of the specific collected movements
come as a result of natural progression through the training
of the horse.
PONYFILE
“he performed the biggest handstand known to man”
Back in the spring we ran a front page cover competition asking for reader’s photos -
we had over 200 photos submitted! There was one photo in particular that caught our
eye! It was the caption that went with the photo that really made us chuckle. We just
had to find out more about ‘Mickey – The Expert Child Flying Instructor’ The photo
was taken and sent in by Fae Loudoun. Fae together with her Mum are the proud
owners of Mickey. Fae told us all about Mickey in our first ever ‘Pony Files’.
Pony File:
Colour: Chestnut with four white socks and a big white face with flaxen mane and tail
Height: 11.2hh Age: 26
Breed: Mickey is an unregistered Welsh Sec A. Mickey was originally based in
Buckinghamshire; he is now in Norfolk, happily retired and making the most of the grumpy
old man syndrome.
Please tell us about his personality: Mickey is a very sweet and loving pony; he loves
everyone but me (Fae)! He likes to lull me into a false sense of security and then do something
naughty like bite my finger…
Please tell us about his career: We purchased Mickey in 2002 from Fiona at RAF Halton Riding stables,
where he was a riding school pony.
Since we brought Mickey he as done a bit of everything including pony club, sponsored rides, Hunting and
even Polo!. Being Mickey's jockey really wasn't for the faint hearted!, as he made a name for himself as not
being very easy to ride. I remember once when I was about 8 years old I took him to Halton Sponsored Ride
and he performed the biggest handstand known to man right on the start line. I cried, but mum told me I had to
do it because it was expensive… I had to finish the ride. In the long term, learning to stay on (or hang on in
some cases) improved my riding so I’m guessing I must be thankful to him?
Other Memories: “I bought Mickey for my eldest sons 4th birthday. He was sold to me as a perfect child's pony that would do anything that was asked of
him. To a large extent this was true! As a lead rein pony, he was foot perfect. I ran a military saddle club and he was used for lead rein lessons and Riding
for the Disabled, he rarely put a foot wrong, although I'm not sure he ever really bought into the whole RDA scenario as he found it quite boring and it was
much more fun to try and nip the leaders and side walkers. However off the lead rein, this is where he worked out he was both stronger and more switched
on than his riders. It was so much fun turning a circle into a quick whizz round the arena in all directions than it ever was going round and round. That wasn't
enough fun at all. Mickey was fine out hacking and would gladly have gone all day but school work, quite frankly was beyond him!!!!!!! Sadly, after
persevering for a long time with him, the decision was made to
sell him to Fae and we have kept in touch with him ever since.
You can't help but love Mickey, his cheeky face speaks
volumes, but underneath is a pony with a heart of gold who is
definitely a character many of us will never forget”.
- Fiona Lightfoot
Rider Memories: “I remember riding Mickey when I was about
12 years old me and Fae used to have so much fun taking the
ponies out for rides and jumping in the fields. During this time I
had ground inspections! Mickey was so cheeky and used to
throw in a few bucks here and there. He definitely helped me
become a better rider as I had to learn to sit up and keep my leg
on. He was challenging at times but what a talented little pony,
one in a million”.
- Jj Baker
What he is doing now: Mickey is happily retired, living in my
Mum’s garden carrying out a useful task as a glorified lawn
mower.
READERRESULTS
Back in August, many of our readers competed
at Equifest which is one of the largest horse
events in the equestrian calendar. A five day
horse show held at the East of England
Showground for all horse lovers and one of the
biggest competing events in the UK. We
invited our readers to share with us some of
their results and photo’s so we could celebrate
their achievements.
Lead Rein Concours Winners 2018 - Briars Aspen aka Harry and Rose
Danielle Bishop and Cotes Black Jack
This was the duo’s first time at Equifest together and Danielle
was thrilled with the result, 1 st in the Dales Gelding Class.
Owner Tracey Paskins told us “It was such a buzz to stand in a huge arena to
hear them announce the placing's in reverse order. What a superstar pony he
was and he just loves the big atmospheres. He went in first and did an amazing
trot round. Then the lap of honour at the end was just fantastic and going out
down the centre line to lots of music and clapping was amazing and an
experience my daughter Rose and I will never forget!”
Ava’s mum, Jeavon Steward told northants
horse tarder magazine “I am so proud of all the
hard work this 9 year old puts in and love she
had for her boy at his only his 5th ever show”.
Dani told us “We also entered the Ridden Foreign
Breeds class with a variety of different horses
competing, and we managed to get 2 nd place in
this class! This took us forward to the open ridden
world breeds supreme championships later on in
the week; unfortunately we didn't get placed but
'Joe' was incredible throughout all the classes
promoting the Haflinger breed at its best. I am
extremely proud of him.”
WORKINGWITH
TRIED & TESTED
‘DUNCAN’ THE DUMMY
Northants Horse Trader
Magazine follow many local
businesses on social media
and when ‘EJ’s Equestrian’ a
local breaking in and reschooling
business posted about the work
they carry out using ‘Duncan’
we were keen to find out more.
Ellie has many years experience with breaking in and reschooling horses.
The process can be stressful for some horses (and trainers!). Ellie was
keen to look at ways she could minimise the stress of the horses that
she worked with; after some research Ellie decided to import a dummy from
a company called Ardall based in Ireland that she affectionately calls ‘Duncan’.
The Ardall is a device for training horses. Designed primarily to accustom
unbroken horses, or horses that have not been ridden for some time, to safely
accept a rider, it can also be used for training performance horses.
The Ardall Comprises of Four Main Parts:
1. The Torso.
The main part of the product resembles a legless,
human torso with short arms. At its core, there is a
coiled spring, which facilitates movement when
mounted on a horse. This spring is enveloped with
medium-grade foam in the shape of a torso, which
is covered with high quality, UV-protected
leatherette.
2. The Base
The torso is affixed to a flat, solid base, which
has been specially moulded to fit any standard
saddle. This is covered in the same leatherette
as the torso. On either side, there are two
straps - used for securing the Ardall onto the
horse - and one screw-on ring, through which
the reins go during lunging and long-reining.
3. The Harness
An essential component of the product when
in use, the harness fits onto the torso. The
extent to which the Ardall moves when
mounted on a horse is regulated by the
tightness or looseness of the harness.
4. Weights
These weights serve to make the Ardall heavier helping to introduce the
horse to the sensation of a rider’s legs on either side. These take the form of
two boot-shaped canvas bags, which are filled evenly with fine sand (up to 2
stone/12.7KG in each.) These are clipped onto the Ardall, one on each side,
and secured with straps. We also add a riding hat to him to make him seem
more realistic.
You can find out more about the Ardall dummy by visiting www.ardall.com
Ellie believes she has reduced the stress levels of the horses she works with
significantly. Ellie told us that this method has in her opinion “proved to be a
much kinder transition to the riding experience for the horse”. Ellie added “I
feel that as well as being kinder, it is a much kinder method to start a young
horse or to restart a problem horse. Some horses do not like the sensation
of legs when they first touch their sides, or the height of a rider above and
behind the back of their heads. I find that using ‘Duncan’ helps to desensitise
them before a rider gets onboard and therefore minimises injury to both horse
and rider. It also initially eliminates the pull on the horses mouth, when and
if they react”.
Firstly Ellie begins the work by introducing the basic ground work, such as
lunging, long reining and wearing tack. After the basic training, it's then a
natural progression to ‘Duncan’ the dummy.
The timescale varies with each horse as to how long they take to accept
‘Duncan’, it can be as little as 10 minutes to start with up to 45 minutes. Ellie
finds that 2-5 days use is all that is usually needed in most cases.
Backing a young horse or retraining horses does require experienced and
knowledgeable handling as every horse is different and you need that
knowledge to be able to adapt to each situation and to keep both horse and
rider safe and calm.
Ellie always uses ‘Duncan’ initially on every horse or pony that comes to
her to be backed or restarted in their ridden career; as she never knows
how each horse is going to react and it's just a safer and kinder start.
Breaking & Schooling
An accomplished local rider with
many years experience, I have
produced horses from ride and
drive, competition ponies, hunters
to Eventers. Based in Ringstead,
Northamptonshire, I am able to
offer a variety of services:
NOTE: Always seek professional advice before riding, working, training and handling horses.
VETADVICE
It is a question that many of us horse owners will often ask ourselves…
Does my horse need the dentist?. The reality is horses get dental disease
just like we do. Horses teeth grow all the time which is why it is important to
maintain a regular dental routine as changes in the mouth can occur from
one dental check to the next.
Veterinary advice in this magazine is provided as a general guide and you should always seek professional advice.
What are the signs your horse may need a
check up?
Credit: Ed Tyler, Yourworldinpictures.co.uk
Has he started to drop his hay or hard feed?
Are you noticing food stuck between his molars?
Is there a foul smell, coming from his mouth?
Discharge from one or both nostrils?
Does your horse resent having the bit put in or
having the noseband tightened?
Has he become unsteady in rein contact when
ridden?
Causes
He could be developing gum disease, with bleeding gums and rotting food
around his teeth; or perhaps his teeth have started to fall out!
He may have overgrown sharp edges along the outside of his upper molars.
Wolf teeth can also be troublesome and a common problem in young
horses; causing them to object to contact on the bit.
Any tooth problems can go on to result in poor responsiveness when ridden,
to dropping food and even losing weight. Problems can even result in
unbalancing the whole horse and causing back and hind leg problems!
Horses are designed to eat tough old grass and leaves and not soft lush
grass. The Horses upper jaw is wider than the lower jaw and the teeth grow
all the time, they have to rely on us to call in the professionals to look after
them.
We would usually recommend a routine dental treatment at least once a
year. However some may require treatment every six months.
As a routine we at Swanspool use battery powered equipment as we feel it
is quicker, less stressful and less damaging to the teeth. Our vets can also
administer sedation if required.
Never underestimate how important good teeth and a good dentist are to
the overall health of your horse or pony…Their health is in your hands.
regular dental treatment and you can tell - Just look at that smile!

BRC NAF Five Star National Horse Trial Championship
READERRESULTS
The NAF Five Star National Horse Trial Championship were held on the 4 th & 5 th of
August. Here we celebrate some of our readers achievements that have been sent
into Northants Horse Trader Magazine.
Elise Kyle & Sizzling Sophie 1 st
NAF Magic Junior HT 90 Individual Arena 1
We asked Elise about her fantastic
results and this is what she told us
“Sophie was mega, even in the heat! I
couldn’t of asked her to be any better!
She was so relaxed in the dressage and
produced a lovely test scoring 31.1
In the showjumping she was at her best,
I honestly can’t believe how brilliant she
felt! but as we want over the 3rd to last
fence she brushed the pole, I thought it
went down but very lucky in bounced
back in to the cup! it was a heart in the
mouth moment!
Due to the ground being hard the BRC
cancelled the Roads & Tracks & the
steeplechase sections so we only had to
compete in the cross country on the
Sunday.
It was a technical, hilly course and with
the ground being hard, I didn’t want to
push her too hard. Sophie, being Sophie
had other ideas and she obviously
wanted some fun and some fun is what
she got! She had a beautiful round and
finished in the time!
Ending the long weekend in 1st place in
my section and 8th including all sections!
I still can’t believe it.
I could not be more proud on my
Sophie!”
Houghton and Huntingdon Riding Club from area 7 came 1 st in the team 100 and
was the only team to score sub 100 penalties. In addition to their team win,
individually they also secured a 1 st, 2 nd and 5 th in arena individually. The picture
above is left to right: grey horse and rider is Claire Ludeks riding Ellie's Duke (5th
individually), Barry Meningen Riding News for You (2nd individually), Katherine
Peden riding Rufus (1st individually) Katy Watson riding Hunt Politics. The riding
clubs 110 team came 3 rd overall with 3 rd, 5 th and 7 th in the arena individually.
Sophie Coles & Charlie winners of the
NAF Selfie Competition.
The duo also came 13th in their arena at the 5* Junior HT80
