Levi
Helen Jackson and Leverage
‘Levi’
I acquired Levi after a chance encounter… A private yard had a pony of mine to sell
and whilst visiting them I saw him in the field and completely fell in love with him! He
was a sheer fluke buy, he wasn’t for sale and I wasn’t looking. Levi finished racing at
the age of 5. When I purchased him he had been shown poles and xc jumps and then
was turned away.
Levi is now 13. It has been a long journey with him but we have loved every minute as
he is such a awesome, happy horse!
I compete him in a range of disciplines and together we have gained fantastic results;
including winning the British Dressage RoR Championships at Prelim and Novice level!
Other results include finishing 2nd at the BE RoR 90cm Final, we have been to the
British Dressage Petplan Finals at Prelim level and competed at Blenheim with RoR in
dressage. We have even been at the Championships at Aintree with some good wins
and placings. We are currently back out with BE after a break due to my work and have
had a cracking start to the season, winning our first event at Oasby and a 2nd place at
Norton Disney, both at 90cm. On the 8th of June we went to Speetley and got our first
double clear at 100cm!
‘Scruff’
Scruff
We purchased Scruff from the Tattersalls Sales in November 2017 as a 4 year old. His
last race was in August 2017. He was a very sweet chap when we brought him home
but was very nervous in the stable. After a couple of weeks off we started his retraining,
firstly with lunging. We then Introduced a normal saddle with a rider on him, to allow
him to get used to a rider’s legs the ‘normal’ way of riding. I think the most challanging
part with him (and our other ex-racehorses) was the mounting from a mounting block -
it was alien to them! Once we had established trot and canter, we started going to a few
local dressage events and he seemed to really enjoy his dressage.
He can be very nervous and gets quite upset if he gets something wrong! We have had
to be patient with him. Scruff thrives on being rewarded, he will then try his heart out for
you. He really is such a joy to work with.
Scruff has competed at many dresssage events and is now starting to compete at
Unaffiliated Elementary level. He has won the RoR trophy at our local riding club and
the summer dressage points trophy, plus came 3rd in the Great Midlands Horse Show
Championship - which was just amazing. Scruff has recently started his jumping
education.
Scruff is just amazing around my children, they help groom him and he loves chatting to
them over the door and getting lots of kisses! He has such a kind heart.
‘Jasper’
I got Jasper directly from the trainers yard as a 4 year old, 7 years ago. Six
months after I got him he finished 4th in the Seib R2R class at Burnley and since
then he has also competed and won in sidesaddle, Affiliated Elementary
dressage and local shows. Jasper has also competed in a 80cm one day event
and participated in team events for
local riding clubs. Jasper is
also a fabulous hunter and is
especially good at gate
shutting!
‘Joey’
I had previously been an exercise rider for racehorses and I always had a love
for the breed. When Joey came to live at Welham Stud (where I worked) it
started a new chapter in my life. I never thought I could own such a magnificent
animal and from the first day, we just clicked. Yes, Joey tries my patience at
times and yes he pushes his boundaries on occasion, but he is my soul mate
and is so full of character. Joey and I have been able to experience many new
things together. I have completed my first year of showing with him in 2018 and
we picked up 3 trophies with South Kilworth Riding Club, Best Condition, Sports
Horse and overall Ring Champion. We competed at Equifest in a Sports Horse
and a TB class, being placed in both! We still have some work to do, but I am
super excited about what the future holds for us both… together as a team.
Please come and say ‘hello’ to us both if you see us out competing.
Emily Setchell and Upton Sovereign
‘Sov’
Sov
Now 17 years old, Sov team chases with the Fox Grant Thrusters Intermediate
Team each week throughout the season. Sov makes light work of eventing and
pops around the 100cm classes. He has a successful county show and RoR record
and came 11th in this years Harborough Race Ride. Last year we competed at the
Silver Spur where he came an impressive 9th out of 45 starters. There is nothing
this lad doesn’t do!
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the
welfare of horses who have retired from racing.
The charity:
●
●
●
●
Facilitates the transition to a second career for horses leaving
racing
Educates the owners and riders who take on former racehorses
Creates opportunities for former racehorses to participate and
compete in a range of equine disciplines
Protects the welfare of former racehorses, in particular those who
are vulnerable
The ultimate goal is to maintain a balance between the number of horses
leaving Racing and the number of enthusiastic, and suitable, new homes.
Clearly not all racehorses go on to star in a different sphere, but RoR hopes
that, on seeing what can be done, more riders will think about taking on a
racehorse when they are looking for a new horse. This will help racehorse
owners and trainers, equine charities, retrainers and most importantly, the
horses to find secure and knowledgeable new homes.
CB LEATHER
Launched by the British Horseracing Board (now the British Horseracing
Authority) in April 2000, RoR was awarded charitable status in Autumn 2000.
RoR’s core funding comes from the Racing Industry through contributions
from the different sectors and has established itself as one of the prominent
British Equine Charities, promoting the highest standards of equine welfare.
The charity supports vulnerable racehorses cared for by equine charities
across the country and has its own dedicated Welfare Consultant to monitor
these horses. RoR also works with other charitable bodies to encourage
the use of former racehorses in therapy programmes for both the equine
and human good.
By registering your former racehorse with RoR, you provide valuable
feedback to the industry on the number of former racehorses now enjoying
a second career and can benefit from subsidised training in your area. By
upgrading to competition membership, at a cost of £10 per year, you can
take part in our series in all disciplines from dressage to hunting, showing
to team chasing and award prizes all over the country for everyone, amateur
and professional alike, with the RoR National Championships, held at
Aintree, being the ultimate celebration of the former racehorse.
Trick Training
Are you looking for an alternative and fun way to work your horse? Try Trick Training!
Trick training can be a fun way to work
your horse. It is based on correct
groundwork and exemplary manners
from the horse. The horse has to be
submissive, soft and yielding on the ground
before you can start asking for tricks. Tricks
taught without the correct foundation
groundwork can turn into unwanted (and
often dangerous) bad habits, therefore care
must be taken.
The 3 groundwork basics I always insist the horse
knows and executes well before teaching tricks
are the following:
1To be respectful and soft in a
head collar.
He/She must back up willingly and softly, as well
as moving their forehand and hindquarters over
sideways in both directions. They must also stand
patiently, at any length of rope and know not to
enter your personal space unless invited.
2To yield and flex their neck both
ways off the head collar.
To ensure your horse is flexible and soft to gentle
pressure. If your horse needs work on it’s
flexibility to do this, start introducing a simple
carrot stretches to encourage mobility.
3Pick up any foot on command.
You must have safe control over your horse’s feet
and willingness by them to pick up their own feet.
This is not teaching them to ‘paw’ or strike or
similar – this is solely picking a foot up as you
would do to pick them out. Holding a foot up or
asking for a raised leg appears in a variety of
tricks, so it is essential the horse understands the
cue to pick a foot up on command as well as learn
to hold their balance.
All 3 of these basics are crucial to all tricks,
however all 3 can help in your day-to-day life with
your horse. All are encouraging softness and
positive manners. You will end up with a horse
that is not bargy, is easy to control in-hand and
you will never have any problems picking up feet!
WHAT ARE THE POSITIVES OF
TRICK TRAINING?
If you choose to progress on to trick training once
the groundwork is established, it is a brilliant way
of making the horse body aware and engaging
the brain. You increase mobility, aid flexibility,
strengthen the horse and create extra body
awareness where you can have control over each
part of the horse more acutely than before. You
can even create more impulsion, balance and
more collection or length of stride. You can create
‘helpful tricks’ - lowering their head for the bridle,
kneeling to mount, manoeuvring a gate, parking
up at a mounting block, putting a hoof to your
Farrier’s tripod, recall/coming to call.
The basics of trick training can even help avoid
incidents in the future; surprising objects are not
so scary or anything caught round their legs is
not something to panic over, therefore avoiding
injury. Trust is formed and their flight or fight
response can be managed more easily.
HOW DO I TRICK TRAIN?
All trick training is based on the cue, the response
and the reward.
● The cue is the aid you choose to ask for a
specific trick. It can be vocal, physical or
even a mix of both.
● The response is the reaction the horse gives
you from the cue.
● The reward is what you give when the horse
gives you the correct response to your cue.
There are 4 main training methods to fully
understand how you teach your horse. These can
be applied to every day training and handling, not
just trick training.
1Positive Reinforcement.
This is when the horse is rewarded automatically
when they have responded correctly, with
something positive. This is most typically a treat
but can be anything the horse will perceive as
positive – a pat, a scratch on their itchy spot,
vocal reward etc.
2Negative Reinforcement.
This is when the horse has a ‘negative’ cue or
stimulus removed when they have responded
correctly. The word ‘negative’ in the title should
not be thought of as a bad training method
however - this method is actually commonly used
in day to day training. A simple example of this
would be getting your horse to move away from
pressure – the pressure is removed once the
horse has moved away from it.
3Negative Punishment.
This is when the horse receives no positive or
negative action at all for any response offered.
This is also referred to as eradication and is
useful when ‘un-training’ your horse. An example
would be your horse offering a movement, trick
or bad habit that is unwanted and you simply
ignore them. They do not get any reward or
response of any kind for doing it, so in time, have
no desire to do it and the behaviour is ‘deleted’.
This method is crucial when trick training, as if
your horse does any trick when you have not
asked for it, it MUST be ignored. They have to
learn tricks are only ever acceptable on command.
9 NorthantsHorseTrader Magazine
Always seek the help of a professional before taking on any new training with your horse
4Positive Punishment.
This is the horse receiving punishment for any
‘unwanted’ behaviour. Any ‘punishment’ for
anything such as biting, needs to be immediate
to have any relevance to the horse. If there is a
need for constant punishment during training,
then retraining needs to be addressed or physical
pain ruled out.
HOW CAN I TRICK TRAIN?
There are many different tricks to teach and are
dependant on each individual horse. The horse
must be physically strong enough as well as
mentally mature enough to cope with training.
There is no limit on age or type of horse, however
you must be honest with yourself on your horse’s
temperament and manners before you start
certain tricks. As I say, any good trick can quickly
be a bad habit!
THE SIMPLE BOW:
The easiest trick to teach you can try is the simple
bow. This cannot turn into a bad habit nor be
dangerous to anyone around you. It is also a very
good body stretch for your horse!
1Start with a simple carrot stretch.
I start by getting the horse to follow a carrot down
to either side of their front feet. I start them this
way to get them confident lowering their head
next to people, learn their balance steadily and
gradually become flexible. Each time they get the
carrot, simply say ‘bow’.
2Move the carrot stretch between
the front legs.
If the horse finds it difficult and backs up instead,
simply put them against a wall or just take the
time and patience till they realise they are only
allowed the carrot once they stay still and just
lower their head between their front legs. Again,
each time they get the carrot, simply say ‘bow’.
3Move the carrot further back.
Once they are consistent with the carrot stretch
between their front legs, you can gradually bring
the carrot further back each time. Only let them
have the carrot once they’ve moved their head
and neck further back between their legs than the
last time. This must not be rushed as the finished
result is a very large body stretch for the horse
so you must build their suppleness gradually.
Again, each time they get the carrot, simply say
‘bow’.
4Perfecting the cue and reward.
Once they are flexible and consistent holding a
long and low bow, you then just keep working on
your cue and reward. The cue eventually is a
mixture of physical and vocal which has been
building up automatically as you have been
training the trick. The physical cue is your
sweeping arm gesture (stemming from following
the carrot) and the vocal cue is the word ‘bow’.
You now can simply ‘bow’ next to your horse and
your horse bows too!
There are many more tricks you can learn –
Freelance Equine offers specialist trick training
lessons for you to learn more about trick training
VETADVICE
Equine skin irritations can
be caused by allergies,
external parasites and even
management practices. At some
point, you may come across some
sort of itchy skin issue. It is one of
the hazards of being outside and
exposed to bacteria, fungi and
viral agents in the natural
environment.
Skin has three main functions: protection,
regulation and sensation. It is made up of a
number of different layers. The epidermis is the
outer most layer that provides a waterproof
barrier. The dermis beneath, contains tough
connective tissue, hair follicles and sweat
glands. The deeper subcutaneous tissue is
made of fat and connective tissue. Problems
arise when there is damage to these layers, or
if they have become weakened. If this occurs
then secondary infection can occur.
Rain Scald & Ringworm
Elevated patches of hair can be associated with
rain scald or ringworm. Rain scald is a bacterial
skin infection caused by the spores of
Dermatophilus congolensis, whereas ringworm
is caused by a fungus. Rain scald is much more
common in healthy horses and ringworm is
more common in younger horses. Both can be
contagious, especially ringworm so it is
important that you wear gloves when touching
the area. Fungal infections require medicated
shampoo treatments whereas Hibiscrub can be
used for rain scald areas.
Sweet-Itch
If your horse is continually itchy on the mane
and tail area then your horse may have ‘sweetitch’.
This is an allergic skin reaction caused by
Culicoides Midge bites. Mostly observed during
warm months especially between April and
September. The skin becomes swollen,
extremely itchy, causing the horse to scratch
sometimes leading to ulcers and bleeding
areas. Management is key to help reduce the
reaction in your horse. Fly masks, rugs, are very
important as is fly repellent. Stabling the horse
between 4pm and 10am can also help to reduce
problems as well as location of the field (is it
near open water areas). In severe cases then
steroids may be necessary. A vaccine is also
available, which is a course of 2 injections
before the midge season (February-March).
Lice and Mites
Lice and mites also cause itchiness and
alopecia (hair loss). Typically lice will live near
the head, mane, tail and back and you can see
eggs. Whereas mites live in the feathers and
legs and are more common in heavier breeds.
Lice only live for a short period of time in the
environment so are easier to control then mites.
Both can be contagious so isolation is
important. Oral, topical and injectable
treatments are available but are ‘off licensed’ in
horses.
Sunburn
Sunburn can also affect your horse, especially
on pink areas, applying sun cream can reduce
the chance of skin cancer. Some horses that
have pink areas may also have photosensitivity.
Eating certain plants (like St John’s Wort) can
cause photosensitivity. If you are concerned
about photosensitivity then contact us to arrange
a visit and a blood test to check liver parameters.
Skin Tumours
Skin tumours can appear on any area of your
horse. Many resolving on their own if caused by
the equine papilloma virus. Sarcoids are another
type of skin tumour which are more serious and
require removal. Please contact us if you are
worried about a lump that has appeared
especially in genital, chest or face regions.
Looking ahead
Although summer brings additional fly worries,
it is important to maintain your horse’s skin
condition all year round, often prevention is
better than cure!
If you have any questions please feel free to
FEATURE
Riding For Everyone!
The term ‘classical’ riding is often much
misunderstood. Firstly, many people think of it as
elitist or consisting of advanced or difficult
dressage. The word classical actually means that
it has its origins in past centuries and has passed
the test of time. Although there are slight
differences of opinion in the classical world, its
principles have, and always will, remain the same
to any true classicist. This is because it is based
on the laws of nature, such as gravity, and the
natural biomechanics of the horse. Although
horses are bred differently for different purposes,
their basic make-up and way of movement has
remained the same for thousands of years.
The word dressage means to ‘dress’ or prepare
the horse for whatever work it is intended, and
all dressage has its origins in classical
horsemanship. Therefore, all horses, from big
Warmbloods down to Shetland ponies should be
prepared for their work by basic dressage.
Whatever you intend to do with your horse he will
benefit from basic classical dressage, and
classical merely means ‘correct’ in this sense.
FEI Rules Are Based On Classical
Principles
Also, those who have been brought
on too quickly, at an early age, or
pulled in from the front end into
rollkur or hyperflexion very often
suffer physical break down at an
early age.
For All Disciplines
Whatever your chosen discipline, a
basic grounding in classical
dressage will greatly benefit your
horse. Added to this he will be a
much more pleasant ride, being
lighter in the forehand, easier to
turn, more agile and a safer ride.
Riding with an independent classical
seat is very much safer and better
balanced than using say a ‘chair’
seat, as frequently seen.
A chair seat is when the rider’s seat is at the back
of the saddle, putting too much weight on the
weakest part of the horse’s back and
making the rider most unstable
and likely to go ‘out the side
door’ at the slightest
spook.
A Chair Seat
The FEI Rule Book is based firmly upon the
principles set down by Francois Robichon de la
Gueriniere, one of the most revered Classical
Masters. If all these rules were adhered to, then
all competitive dressage would be classical.
Unfortunately, many judges have deviated from
their own rule book and reward some bad
practices, but thankfully not all; there are still
some good judges who stick to classical
principles.
The Purpose Of Dressage
Dressage is designed to physically and mentally
prepare the horse to carry the rider with the
optimum amount of ease, in the best-balanced
way. All the exercises are designed to build up
strength and flexibility in the back, joints and
tendons; especially strengthening the hind legs,
so that the horse can take more weight on the
hindquarters, relieving the front legs of the extra
pressure which they necessarily are burdened
with, once a rider is aboard. All these exercises
need to be done carefully, and strength built up
slowly, so that the horse comes to a naturally
more ‘round’ frame, which emanates from
strength in the hindquarters. Hence the phrase
‘the horse should be ridden from back to front’ –
never pulled into an outline from the front.
Horses naturally carry more weight on the
forehand, but when the weight of the rider is
added this causes undue strain on the forelegs
and is one of the main causes of arthritic, tendon,
etc. breakdown as the horse ages. A horse
carefully prepared in the classical way has a
much healthier and longer life expectancy than
his counterparts who have been allowed to slop
along on the forehand for most of their lives.
The classical seat
is not just for
dressage. It can
easily be
adapted for
jumping and
cross country
by shortening
the stirrups a
little, making it
easier for the
rider to follow
the centre of
gravity forward
by folding from the
hips, and lifting the
seat slightly off the
saddle. All the other
laws of gravity remain the
same. The weight aids for
turning and re-aligning the horse
before a jump render the horse much
better balanced and more manoeuvrable,
rather than relying on hauling on the reins as is
so often seen.
If you are a happy hacker, you will find classical
training a real boon to your enjoyment. Your
horse will be lighter, easier to turn, you will feel
much more in control without any harsh aids.
Your horse will be better at negotiating turns and
uneven ground, and is likely to stay sound and
live much longer if he is capable of taking some
of the weight onto the haunches. Your seat will
be much deeper and both you and your horse
will be safer.
The Classical Seat
Weight Aids From The Beginning
It is a source of sadness to me that the simple
weight aids are not very often taught to new riders
at riding schools these days. They are not difficult
for the rider and are a natural thing for the horse
to respond to, and very much more comfortable.
For instance, to turn left the rider should put a
little weight on the left stirrup, turn the head and
shoulders to the left, giving just a gentle feel on
the left rein, supported by the outside (right) leg
taken very slightly back and the right rein being
held in position to support the horse’s right
shoulder. In this way the horse can make a very
alanced left turn, following the weight and position of the rider, without
falling onto the left shoulder and being pulled in the mouth with an
over-exaggerated left head and neck flexion.
The rider’s weight transference should be fairly miniscule. This will be felt
by the horse and it is a natural reaction for the horse to follow this weight
transference. They don’t have to be taught; it is done automatically. If you
were carrying a horizontal pole above your head, the easiest way to carry
it would be in the middle with equal weight either side. If one side starts to
feel heavier, your reaction will be to move in that direction, so you stay
under the centre of gravity.
The Ethos Of Classical Horsemanship
There is more to classical horsemanship than just a kinder, natural way of
riding. It encompasses an ethos of kindness and love of the horse in all
aspects of care. Everything is based on mutual respect, with a view to the
best long-term interests of the horse. Anything other than this is not true
classicism, but merely a travesty of the word.
The Levade
The pinnacle of collection
(weight transference to
the hindquarters).
You don't have to aspire
to this kind of high school
dressage to ride
classically.
Tracing Horses
FEATURE
USING ‘TRACE MY HORSE UK’
The majority of horse owners can understand the feeling of guilt and grief
after we lose contact with the new owners and they get passed on to the
unknown; others suffer from their horses lacking a history, one which has
built them into the character they are today.
On the 20 th August 2013, Alison Talbott created the Facebook page ‘Trace
My Horse UK’ with the aim to reunite past owners with their beloved horses.
Alison has brought together a community of past owners and current owners
hoping to find out the history of their horses. The page has proved very
successful, easing the minds of hundreds of owners about their horses.
Stored under ‘files’ on the page consists of month-by-month data on horses
found and records set; these files alone prove how effective the group is,
showing information like the highest record of horses being found in a month
(currently placed in January 2019 – with 104 being traced). Each individual
trace, each connection between owners and horses, offers such a rewarding
experience for all involved.
The group has become a catalyst to many successful reuniting stories, and
often the only reason they were possible. One member sold her horse to a
‘dealer’ as a non-ridden companion, but later found that she had been sold
as a ‘been there done it’ type, to a woman and her daughter. The member
posted on Trace My Horse UK a description of the mare, and another
member who recognised the horse put her in touch with the new owners and
following the new owner’s hard decision to retire the mare, the member was
offered her back and she ‘jumped at the chance’.
Other member stories include an owner who had lost her mare in a stream
of new owners, posted on the page expecting nothing, to very quickly (within
4 minutes) find that the mare is now Instagram and YouTube famous and
has a lovely home. A different member posted about being unable to trace
a beloved cob that they had to let go of and in less than 2 months after posting
her initial advert, she was visiting the pony with his new owners.
The page currently has just over 16,000 members and is aiming to increase
this number - the more members, the higher the chance of reuniting owners.
I urge each owner reading this article to join the page. If you wish to catch
up with a horse you have lost touch with over time or trace your own horse’s
history; this could begin the incredible journey that so many others have ben
able to experience. You may even be able to provide information that helps
another member trace or understand their horses past.
If you planning on tracing a horse on this page, Alison recommends that you
provide the following in your trace post:
● A good quality, clear photo of the horse’s head, body and any unusual
markings.
● An accurate description of the horse’s colour (bearing in mind the
colours of their coat may change, e.g. a dapple grey will eventually fade
into flea-bitten/grey).
● Height
● Freezemark
● Age
● Passport Details
● Vices/quirks/illnesses they may have (hard to shoe/rears/cushings etc)
● Last known location.
Any of the above information will offer Alison a better chance of a successful
trace.
