Visiting Runes<br />
The Illustrated Book of Runes is a project currently<br />
in the crowd-funding stage being created<br />
by <strong>Nelson</strong> area artist Dawn Ravenwind aka.<br />
Steeves. The project is to create a comprehensive<br />
art book of the Elder Futhark runes, also<br />
known as the Viking runes. The Illustrated Book<br />
of Runes will be the first artbook of the runes<br />
and it uses the symbology each rune represents<br />
to create the illustrations. The art is a collection<br />
of strikingly detailed watercolour paintings,<br />
and the write-ups about them are inspiring and<br />
thoughtful.<br />
The Elder Futhark is an alphabet that was created<br />
by the ancient Germanic peoples. Not only<br />
was it used for writing, but it was also a system<br />
of divination and magic. The premise is that<br />
each sound is a vibration and each vibration is<br />
an energy that relates to a universal concept and<br />
is linked to higher wisdom. The Illustrated Book<br />
of Runes will have detailed illustrations with<br />
the symbols each of the Elder Futhark runes<br />
represents.<br />

Thoughtweft Publishing from Kelowna is<br />
working with Dawn to bring this book into its<br />
best form, and printing is planned to take place<br />
early next year.<br />
Dawn is a local <strong>Nelson</strong> Métis artist who has<br />
been a resident of the area for 5 years. She has<br />
been a fantasy artist for 15 years, and is known<br />
for her DragonheART booth where she sells<br />
chainmail and scalemail jewellery and costume<br />
pieces. She went to university in Victoria for<br />
Biology, and achieved a Bachelor of Science with<br />
Honour’s and Distinction. Dawn also tutors<br />
math and science for local <strong>Nelson</strong> students.<br />
