WOODLEIGH HYDROthe best of both worldsBryan BettonWith so many bullets available on the market and so many different hunting circumstanceswe often find ourselves in, choosing the correct bullet to do the intended job can becumbersome. Do you sacrifice a large wound channel for straight-line penetration or do you runthe risk of bullet deflection in order to gain maximum expansion and wound channel?With this in mind, John Marozzi developed the HydrostaticallyStabilised Bullet, simply known as theHydro. Hydrostatic stabilisation is a technique thathas been used in the brass extrusion industry for many years.It is a method of producing pierced, hollow bars to very preciseconcentricity by using tool design to harness hydrostatic forcesin order to centralise mandrels when punching through brassbillets.With this technique in mind, John designed a bullet thatwould penetrate in a straight line and generate hydrostatic pressureto create cavitation along the way, thus improving the reliabilityof a soft-nose bullet, as well as redirecting sufficient terminalmedia to create a large wound channel without deformingthe metal. The depressed nose at the leading edge of the bullet“cores” the medium, in this case the flesh, through which it istravelling, which then creates a “pressure ring”. The coring andpressure ring balance each other out to stabilise the bullets inthe direction of travel. If the bullet hits hard bone, the flesh coredissipates but immediately reforms and the balance betweenit and the pressure ring destabilises to redirect the bullet in theoriginal direction of travel. An additional benefit of this design isthat the pressure ring creates a devastating wound channel andmassive hydraulic shock transfer. The bullet actually travels in alow-pressure cavitation bubble, which aids in bullet stabilisationand greatly increases penetration due to significant reductionsin frictional forces acting on the bullet.The homogenous bullet is made from a specially formulatedcopper alloy, using only the purest raw materials in itsmanufacturing. This results in a bullet that has better toughnessthan most modern homogenous bullets but still creates breechpressures similar to standard gilding metal-jacketed soft-noseprojectiles. The combination of materials and design allows forexcellent accuracy in magazine rifles and excellent regulationon most Nitro doubles.Cavitation bubbleBody tissueAnother desirable feature is the shallow driving bandsand full diameter body. The driving bands, combined with thematerials used, keep pressures low and minimise stresseson barrels. The full-diameter body (land diameter) has twobeneficial effects. The first is that the bullet is more stable as ittravels through the barrel because it is fully supported, which inturns results in more reliable performance. The second is thatthe weight of the bullet is more evenly distributed from front toback, which also helps to prevent bullets tumbling within gameanimals. This combination of engineering and metallurgical principles,combined with cutting-edge CNC technology, has takenbullet design to the next level.The Hydro has therefore bridged the gap between modernsolids and expanding bullets. It allows today’s hunters toconfidently take a bull elephant in the morning and plains gamein the afternoon with the same rifle/load combination whenusing an appropriate calibre. The projectiles will withstand theultra-high velocities and power of modern cartridges. They willresist deflection through heavy brush and bone while reliablycreating a large, straight wound channel. As this bullet does notrely on expansion for its killing effect, it sidesteps the problem oferratic expansion potentially suffered by other types of expandingmono-metal bullets. The Hydro features a ballistic cap thatis designed to eliminate any feeding issues and increase theballistic coefficient to accommodate long-range shooting. Thecap is intended to survive recoil and exterior ballistics, but disintegrateson contact with any obstacle.With all this technology in mind, a hunter or professionalhunter now no longer needs to be concerned about sacrificingstraight-line penetration for a smaller wound channel, or a largewound channel with potential disintegration or deflection of thebullet.
