Local businesses lead the way

By: Ned Koppen - Chamber President

Greetings from the Fairmont Area Chamber

of Commerce. The year 2020 has turned out to be a

year unlike any most of us have ever experienced. The

challenges have been many and difficult. Dealing with

change has become a very necessary skill. With that

introduction, it might seem that this will be another

gloomy, pandemic themed monologue that we have all

heard many versions of over the past many months. I

am going to avoid that, I promise. Instead I am going to

talk about positives in our community. COVID 19 will

be somewhere in the background, as it has since mid-

March, but that is the kind of year it has been.

Like every Chamber member, the Fairmont

Area Chamber office has been

forced to make concessions to the

way we do business. Every time

we plan to hold a meeting (big or

small), plan an event or do any of

the things we have always done,

we have to think about how to do it

the right way, the safe way or to do

it at all. The information that helps

you make those decisions seems

to change weekly, daily or maybe

during the course of any given day.

Those are big challenges and all

of our businesses are navigating

that minefield. They have changed

when they needed to and pivoted

when necessary. It is impressive. When you go shopping,

you can still go to the stores you want and buy the

things you want and need.

Over the course of the last few months of

change, our businesses have changed as well. They

have figured out ways to offer you more choices and

more value than you received before a pandemic of

challenges and circumstances came into the picture.

Think about how many of our LOCAL businesses now

offer expanded ways to shop on-line now (I’m not talking

about Amazon). You can call in orders, have your

purchases delivered to your home, curb side pick-up, all

of these services are things that our local businesses are

doing for us. And they figured out how to do it when

“Let's Shop

Holiday Season "

things were most difficult for them. I have often felt that

how someone reacts when times are toughest is a pretty

good indicator of what they are made of. If that is true,

we are lucky to live in this great community made up of

all these great businesses and the people who work for

them.

So, with that said, the Chamber office has starting

the planning for the Glows Parade and that means

that the Holiday Shopping Season is ready to get under

way. I think we can all assume that there will be changes

to some of what we do and challenges in how we do

things this year. Here is one change that we can be intentional

about. Let’s shop local this holiday

season. You hear the Chamber talk

about shopping local all of the time.

It’s a good thing, and it benefits our

community and local businesses

in many ways in a normal year.

This strange and unpredictable

year all of those same reasons still

hold true. In addition, we should

all think about the businesses and

choices that we have right here in

our community because shopping

local is great for our community

AND our businesses deserve it!

They have fought and clawed their

way to keeping their doors open

and made sure we could safely get the

products we needed when times were tough. Let’s give

them a thank you for that and buy local this year.

The Chamber’s Retail, Business & Entertainment

(RBE) Committee created a Top 10 Reasons to

Support Local Businesses list. Here is the list:

1. Creates Local Jobs for the Community

2. Boosts the Local Economy

3. Supports Your Neighbors

4. Provides More Personalized Service

5. Saves Time

6. Donates Back to the Community

7. Encourages Other Businesses to Invest Locally
