means that we consistently have some of 

the best achievement rates in the country 

year after year. 

In fact, back in 2018 and 2019 we were the best 

performing college in the whole country, which means 

you’re more likely to stay on your course and pass your 

course than if you went to any other college. 

While there’s no league tables in 2020 due to the 

Covid-19 pandemic, our results are consistently high 

and based on the most recently published data we are 

the No.1 college in the country.

you’d like to pursue and 

enjoy technical training 

with lots of time to gain 

practical skills, T Levels are 

a great choice for you. 

During this two-year programme, you’ll 

spend 20% of your time in the workplace 

working with an employer and 80% 

gaining high-quality training in the 

classroom. 

What are T Levels? 

T Levels are technical 

qualifications introduced in 2020 

that have been endorsed by 

business leaders and designed to 

get you career-ready. Depending 

on the T Level route, you’ll spend 

a minimum of 45-days (315 

hours) working in industry to 

get the skills and experience 

that employers are looking for. 

What level are they? 

T Levels are a Level 3 qualification. 

Students achieving the very 

top grade in their T Level 

qualification will have the 

equivalent of three A*s at A

Our intu Metrocentre store is pretty 

special. Not only does it sell gifts 

crafted by some of the best North 

East producers, but it also offers 

the opportunity for our students 

to get retail work experience, 

apprenticeships and also launch 

their own products. 

The Children’s College 

Through The Children’s College 

we’re working with primary 

schools and their pupils to build 

confidence and explore different 

careers from an early age.

English and maths skills are vitally 

important to employers which is why 

you’ll study these as part of your 

course to either improve your skills 

or achieve better GCSE grades. 

Studying English and maths in college is different 

to school as we’ll show you how these skills are 

relevant to the industry you want to work in. 

Plus, our teachers are experts at breaking these 

subjects down and making them relevant to 

everyday life to help your understanding and build 

your confidence. Through the use of games, quizzes 

and online apps they’ll make your learning fun.

Which English and maths option is right for me? 

You’ll receive a personalised programme to help you

us decide which level you need to study, we take you 

through some initial assessments either before you join 

us or during your first two weeks. 

This shows us where your strengths and weaknesses 

are. We combine these results with your qualifications 

and make a decision about the right English and 

maths programme for you.

Virtual learning 

See how Skye worked virtually during the 2020 lockdown. 

During your time studying with 

us, you might find that some of 

your classes happen virtually. 

These sessions became the norm for 

our students and teachers in 2020 and 

with many workplaces and universities 

increasingly turning to homeworking and 

virtual study, it’s important we give you 

the opportunity to learn this way and 

prepare you for your next steps. 

Your teacher will support you to get online 

and give you an introduction to how your 

virtual lessons will work. You’ll still be able 

to see and speak to your teacher and 

classmates just as you would if you were 

in the same room. 

Every Gateshead College student is 

given a Google account and many of our 

teachers use Google Classrooms and 

Google Meet to host their lessons; the 

Google suite is also ideal for group work 

and collaboration. 

And while we love our tech here at 

Gateshead College, we still know how 

important it is, for both your learning and 

your mental health, to be together in 

person; our virtual classes will take place 

as part of a wider timetable including 

on-campus classroom and workshop 

sessions.

TV & Film production is at the 

heart of the media and the 

performing arts industries. 

Today there are more ways than ever 

to bring films or programmes to the 

screen, whether it's on TV or a streaming 

platform like Netflix or Prime. This means 

that there’s more demand than ever for 

the huge range of skills needed by the 

industry. 

These skills go beyond acting and 

performing to carpenters who can build 

sets, animators and gamers, make up 

artists, journalists, lighting technicians and 

more. 

As a student in Gateshead College’s TV 

and Film Academy you’ll have the unique 

opportunity to not only develop skills

What is an apprenticeship? 

Apprenticeships combine work and study. 

You'll be employed while studying and will spend at 

least 20% of your time away from your job to study 

towards your apprenticeship. On completion of your 

apprenticeship you'll have gained the knowledge, 

skills and behaviours required to succeed in your 

chosen career or progress to the next level of your 


How much will I earn? 

This depends on your employer but there are 

nationally set minimum wages depending on your 

age. If you’re already employed your salary may not 

change. 

How long does it take? 

The duration depends on the type and level of 

apprenticeship. It can vary from a minimum of one 

year up to four years. Most apprentices are employed 

for a minimum of 30 hours per week. 

What if I’m already employed? 

If you're already employed you can still do an 

apprenticeship. Contact us on 0191 490 2450 or by 

email employers@gateshead.ac.uk and we'll work with 

you and your employer. 

What will I achieve? 

You'll get the skills and experience employers look 

for, putting you ahead in the jobs market. You'll also 

achieve maths and English at Level 2 if you don't have 

them already.

Karbon Homes, A&P Tyne, Ford Engineering and Essity. 

This ensures our training remains relevant and up to 

date, providing our apprentices with valuable work 

ready skills. If you want to work for a business that 

doesn't currently employ apprentices, for example a 

family firm, we can advise them on apprenticeship 

training and financial incentives.

These courses will prepare you for the world of 

work in an office environment. If you’re aiming to 

become a secretary, personal assistant, administrator

Level 1: You’ll learn the role and importance of an

equipment, use software to create professional

very own business plan which you will pitch to a panel

the chance to attend Newcastle Startup week where 

you'll hear from and meet successful entrepreneurs

Investment Finance and Accounting: 

Do you enjoy working with numbers, have a good

stock exchange? You'll earn how to record financial 

information, draw up financial accounts and the ways to 

invest finance. Alongside this you'll take part in a virtual 

stock exchange competition. Who will grow the largest 

portfolio? 

International retail, buying and merchandising 

Do you want to work in the fast moving industry of retail, 

forecasting trends, testing products and understanding 

what makes customers tick? You will gain a broad 

understanding of the retail industry, how it responds 

to changes and forecasts trends. Understanding the 

psychology behind customers and managing the 

supply chain is key to success. You will test what you've 

learned by creating a visual merchandising display at 

the Metrocentre. 

Digital marketing: 

Are you creative and love working with social media and 

websites? You'll build on your work in year one gaining 

further insight into branding and digital marketing. You'll 

undertake further research into how social media can 

influence customer behaviour and gain results for a 

business. You will then get to put what you have learned 

into practice through the development of a social media 

campaign for one of our partner marketing agencies. 

Law and human resource management: 

Through this option you will gain an understanding 

of what it's like to develop people in the world of HR 

(human resources). Attention to detail is vital, you'll learn 

what you need to do to comply with employment law 

as well as gaining an insight into criminal law. You will 

hear from judges, magistrates and other professionals 

in addition to attending the court room and conducting

If you have a passion for sport and

wide range of sport-based roles

course is for you. 

This two year programme will 

prepare you for the next steps in 

your career whether this is a job, 

an apprenticeship or a university 

programme in sport. 

You’ll study sport topics as well as 

taking part in work experience with 

one of our industry partners, helping 

you discover the type of role you 

are suited to. 

You'll study the same units as the 

Level 3 Diploma plus practical sports 

performance, development of sport 

and physical activity, coaching for 

performance, research methods in 

sport and four optional units.

This course is your chance to gain 

experience in the armed forces, 

police, fire, prison and paramedic 

services before applying to work 

in your chosen service. The course 

covers a range of units which are 

taught through a mix of classroom 

study, group activities and field trips. 

During this year-long course you 

will study law and crime, land 

navigation, employment skills and 

adventurous activities. You will 

also study for maths and English 

qualifications and complete work 

experience with the army and 

the police. 

You’ll build on your interpersonal 

and communication skills and 

learn how to be an effective team 

player. You can progress to a range 

of careers in the public services or 

continue your studies with us on the

is relevant if you want to work

You’ll cover leadership and 

teamwork, citizenship, crime 

and custodial care, psychology 

as well as taking part in fitness 

testing and team sports. You’ll also

If you’re interested in joining the police, as part of 

the Level 3 Uniformed Public Services course,

When we receive your form we’ll arrange a time 

for you to have a chat with one of our teachers. 

This can be on the phone or via a video call, it’s 

up to you. You'll get to know our teachers, find out 

about the college, our courses and get answers 

to your questions. If you want to progress your 

application, we’ll sort this for you. 

3. Have an audition. 

For some of our courses (Music, Dance and 

Performing Arts), you’ll need an audition which we’ll 

do virtually. You’ll be given a date and time and be 

told exactly what to expect. 

4. Keep in touch. 

We’ll invite you to virtual events throughout the year 

where you can discover more about your course, 

get to know your teachers and meet your future 

classmates. 

5. Start college. 

You'll confirm your grades with us in August 2021 

and we'll get you ready for starting college in
