TARA POOL TO GET SWIMMERS FOR UPCOMING
SEASON BUT FUTURE STILL UNKNOWN
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
The Tara Pool is set to undergo
a $50,000 essential renovation
to ensure that residents of Tara
and surrounding areas can
use it through the 2020/2021
swimming season.
In an email sent to a resident by Western
Downs Regional Council CEO Ross Musgrove,
the Council have recently been considering
future options of the Tara Pool.
"As part of the process, an engineering report
has been undertaken which has identified
the need for urgent rectifications," he said.
"The pool is degrading quickly, and to ensure
it can remain useable for the remainder of
the swimming season, Council has approved
immediate works to rectify the issues
identified.
"There will be minimal disruption to the pool
operations, and it will not be required to be
emptied at this stage.
"Regular structural and water quality reviews
will also be undertaken throughout the
season, and the Council will notify residents
of any changes as a result of these reviews."
The infamous council asset has been
a polarising topic since plans for the
multimillion-dollar upgrade were released in
July.
The project proposed to reduce the
pool's length from 50m to 25m while
creating a wider pool precinct for
Tara.
An online petition launched on
July 21 accrued more than 2,400
signatures, prompting Council
to revisit the $3 million upgrade
which was allocated as part of their
COVID-19 stimulus package.
It's still unclear if the WWRC are
considering the length of the pool as
part of the latest Corporate Services
Report for the Tara Pool Precinct
Masterplan Update.
The report states it "will provide
Council with a clear strategy for the
redevelopment of the pool with due
consideration to asset management,
financial implications, land use
planning, design and functional
mix, community needs and expectations and
future expansion/growth potential."
"Due to the poor state of the pool and the
extent of the works required to deliver a
replacement pool, the current pool cannot
remain open for the use beyond this
swimming season," Mr Musgrove said.
"I understand that people might have
questions in relation to the future plans of the
pool and I assure them that Council will keep
everyone informed as plans progress."
THE MORECOMBE’S PAY A VISIT TO CHINCHILLA TO
DISCUSS ON AND OFFLINE SAFETY
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Recognise, React and Report may just be three simple
words, but Chinchilla State School students this week
learned the importance of those words that could one day
even save their lives.
On Tuesday, October 27, the school welcomed Bruce and Denise Morecombe,
the parents of abducted teenager Daniel Morecombe who made a special
presentation to the students.
Their message was simple to the students, to remember and put into action
those three words if they ever found themselves in a situation where they felt
unsafe.
Recognising involved listening to your body's clues such as goosebumps or
butterflies, react meant running to a safe place and report meant telling an
adult why you feel unsafe.
They also mentioned that everyone needs to consider protective behaviours
online and particularly, what we put on the internet can become a permanent
record.
They suggest that parents set firm guidelines around their child's use of the
internet and monitor what their children are accessing online.
The pair stated that parents also need to be aware that some of the games have
built-in chat functions and many of the leading social media pages - Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter and TikTok have age restrictions (generally 13 years old).
Deputy Principal Lisa Braden said it was a special honour to welcome Bruce and
Denise to the school and to speak to our students about such an important
topic.
"Chinchilla State School are so grateful for all of the work The Daniel Morcombe
Foundation do to protect our children nationwide," she said.
The day was part of the foundation’s Day for Daniel, which is the National Day of
Action on child safety and protection and is the largest child safety awareness
day of its type in Australia.
This year the event reached 5000 schools and early learning centres and
hundreds of businesses, and it is anticipated that over 1.3 million people across
Australia held a conversation about child safety on the official day last Friday.
Now in its 16 th year, the parents have not only dedicated over a decade to
raising awareness but also to keep their son's legacy alive.
"Daniel's legacy is to keep kids safe," Denise said.
"His tragic story is a conversation starter on why we must educate children to
recognise potential danger.
"This could be in the offline world or the online world.
"We thank you for remembering Daniel and honouring his legacy."
Bruce said Day for Daniel is not a bitter day without hope.
"It is a day where Australia reflects upon the past, wipes away that tear and
makes a commitment to do more to protect our children from predators," he
said.
As part of the day, the school's Student Project Club raised funds for the Daniel
Morcombe Foundation by hosting a wear red for a gold coin initiative.
There was also a "guess the number of red lollies" competition which the school
groundsman Mr Bob Kerr was the fortunate winner.
WESTERN
DOWNS
WINDFARM
GETS
PLANNING
APPROVAL
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
The Western Downs is fast
becoming Australia’s energy capital
the announcement of another
renewable energy project coming to
the region.
Set to begin construction late next year the
500MW Wambo wind farm located 20km northeast
of Jandowae last week received planning
approval from the state government.
Co-developers Renewable Energy Partners (REP)
and the UK-based Cubico also intend to add a big
battery, provisionally sized at 50MW/200MWh,
joining a growing number of battery projects
with four hours of storage.
CEO of Renewable Energy Partners, Luke
McDonald said the company was excited to
see the project reach this important milestone,
having commenced work on the project in 2018.
“The site for the Wambo Wind Farm was chosen
due to its excellent wind resource, strong
transmission network, and low environmental
impact,” he said.
“We are looking forward to working with Cubico
and the local community to bring this project to
completion.”
REP is also currently developing the 250MW
Western Downs Solar Farm, the 1.5GW Bowen
pumped hydro project and the 500MW Eungella
wind farm.
The Wambo windfarm will feature 110 feature 110
wind turbines and is one of nearly 30 large-scale
wind and solar projects built, approved or under
construction in the Western Downs council area.
The project will go ahead once off-take
agreements and financing are in place.
Western Downs Regional Council mayor, Paul
McVeigh said he too was delighted to hear the
news.
“It is exciting to see another large-scale renewable
energy project being developed in the Western
Downs region,” he said.
“Council has played a strong role in supporting
the growth of renewables and congratulates
Cubico and Renewable Energy Partners on this
important milestone.”
Head of Cubico Australia David Smith said he
was happy with the role the company played in
the project and what it will bring to the Western
Downs region.
“We are pleased to be developing a renewable
energy project of this quality and scale that will
assist the Queensland government in moving
towards its target of 50% renewable energy
generation by 2030,” he said.
“Construction of Stage 1 of the wind farm is
expected to begin in late 2021, creating around
200 jobs, and be fully operational in 2023,
providing a further 20 jobs.
“Cubico has a strong commitment to working
with the state, as well as the local governments
and community, to deliver jobs that support
regional Queensland.”
Cubico also announced that it had established
a pre-construction community benefit fund of
$50,000 to support local projects and initiatives
for the communities near the Wambo wind farm.
The fund will focus on “building sustainable
communities and enhancing the safety, health
and wellbeing of local people.”
An expanded community benefit fund is being
established for the 30-year operational period of
the project and will commence post-construction.
CHINCHILLA BOTANIC PARKLANDS GOES
ONE STEP HIGHER WITH AWARD
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Just two short months after the Western Downs
Regional Council’s Chinchilla Botanic Parklands
was named Queensland Park of the Year, it has
now gone one step better and further cemented
it’s place as a premier leisure destination.
Last Friday, October 30 it was announced at the National Parks and
Leisure Awards 2020 ceremony, which was conducted via zoom
that the Chinchilla Botanic Parkland was named Australia's Park of
the Year, trumping every other state and territory in the country.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said
the award secured the Parkland's incredible reputation which
supersedes spaces in much larger metro areas.
"It's absolutely incredible to see the Chinchilla Botanic Parkland
given the recognition it deserves and being named the best park
in the country is a phenomenal achievement in the region," Cr
McVeigh said.
"The Chinchilla Botanic Parkland really has it all in terms of premier
public spaces with various sections catering to all ages including
the megafauna discovery centre, state-of-the-art water play area,
parkour equipment and outdoor amphitheatre.
"The Parkland pays homage to our wonderful local flora and fauna,
while capturing modern interests in a vibrant setting fit for a
humble picnic, right up to major events attracting thousands.
"Taking out Australia's Park of the Year shows the Chinchilla Botanic
Parkland is the best of the best when it comes to best practice for
park design and management.
"I am extremely proud of this award and for leading a Council
with a strong vision to deliver fantastic liveability and lifestyle
opportunities just like this one.
"The Parkland is a huge source of community pride which is
extremely popular throughout the year for residents and visitors
alike."
The Chinchilla Botanic Parkland was the Queensland finalist for the
award category, taking out the title ahead of Camden Council's
Curry Reserve Water Play Space (NSW/ACT), ASPECT Studio's
Felixstow Reserve (SA/NT), Brimbank City Council's Sunvale
Community Park (VIC/TAS) and Shire of Manjimup's Manjimup
Queensland’s 2020 Election results –
CALLIDE
Firstly, thank you to the Callide constituents who have put their trust in
me and returned me to the Callide electorate as your representative. I will
continue to do my very best for all of you. Being the Member for Callide means
representing everybody, not just the people who support conservative
politics.
Many thanks to the people who helped on the polling booths, both on
Saturday and in the days leading up to the Election with the early voting
locations. And to all of my supporters, thank you very much.
It is extremely disappointing for the LNP to be facing 4 more years in
opposition. We have to move on and move forward and reflect on what went
wrong to make this a better state at the next election in 2024.
I will continue to do what is best for Callide and rural and regional Queensland
at every opportunity.
I am concerned for our coal industry and our coal fired power station workers
when it is clear that the Palaszczuk government is not supportive of these
industries.
Once again, I thank you for your support. Please contact my office if I can be
of assistance to you with any State government matters.
Yours sincerely
FARMERS ON HIGH ALERT AS NEW PEST WAS
FOUND IN CHINCHILLA
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
For the first time in the region's
history, an invasive pest called
Fall Armyworm has been detected
in Chinchilla, the Lockyer Valley,
St George posing a threat to
Queensland’s crop production.
The fall armyworm has been spreading across
the nation after it was first detected in January
on two Torres Strait islands before it arrived
on the mainland at Bamaga in February.
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
principal entomologist Dr Melina Miles said
southern Queensland farmers need to be on
high alert.
"Given fall armyworm was recently detected
in the several parts of southern Queensland,
growers should be watching both the level of
activity in local traps and closely monitoring
the vegetative state of their crops," Dr Miles
said.
"They can work with their entomologist to
identify the signs that fall armyworm are
active and to distinguish them from native
armyworms.
"The risk in northern NSW and central
Queensland, in places like Emerald and the
Darling Downs is real and growers there need
to be on high alert."
Dr Miles said for sorghum growers it was
important to inspect the crops during
the vegetative stage and not just from
head emergence, particularly if traps were
indicating the pest was active to the north or
west of their property.
She said there was still a lot to learn about the
effects of the pest on Australian crops.
"We've not previously seen a pest that can
reduce the amount of functioning leaf area
to the point where it warrants control in
the vegetative stage, and that is what fall
armyworm is doing - particularly in maize
and sweet corn," Dr Miles said.
"In the Burdekin, growers tell you that every
crop of maize or sorghum they have has been
affected to some extent."
DAF has been working with Pacific Seeds to
help provide growers with tools to manage
the pest.
This includes developing an integrated
pest management strategy and simulating
damage at varying crop stages to assist in
refining the timing of control measures.
Pacific Seeds summer grains agronomist
Trevor Philp said farmers need to be aware of
the risks.
"The spread of this pest could have unknown
consequences for what promises to be a
strong growing season, with a La Nina event
driving potentially good rainfall across
Australia," Mr Philp said.
"That's why we are working closely with the
department to help give growers the tools to
manage this invasive pest.
"Currently we're simulating fall armyworm
damage on corn to see when growers should
be intervening to avoid detrimental damage.
"This is because fall armyworm damage can
look worse than it is, and we don't want
growers intervening with pesticides until it's
necessary to do so."
HAPPY AND HEALTHY ART
COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Last month kindy students
through to year six students
across the Western Downs got
their creative juices flowing by
entering the Happy and Healthy
drawing programs.
Local community centres partnered with
Origin to bring the competition to the school
students and promote Queensland Mental
Health Week.
The week aimed to shine a spotlight on
individual and community mental health and
wellbeing with t hetheme being Take Time –
For Mental Health.
To help break down the stigma associated
with mental health and encourage our youth
to express themselves creatively, students
expressed in art form about ‘What makes
them happy?’
After some tough decisions with such
strong artwork entered, the winners of the
competition have been announced.
Louise Judge, the Manager of the Chinchilla
Community Centre said she really enjoyed
hosting the competition.
“It was great to include the children and their
families in a mental health discussion through
this activity to share that healthy activities
like going outside, spending time with family
and friends, are also good for mental health,”
she said.
Winner Haroon and his mum Anum Afzal both
agreed they got a lot out of participating in
the competition.
“A beautiful way to get children involved and
help understand that what makes you happy
and healthy is not just about food, but about
going outside, spending time with family
and looking for the wonders of nature, like
rainbows and birds in the park,” Anum said.
“I really enjoyed deciding what to draw,”
Haroon said.
“I did three drawings before I had one, I was
really happy with and it won!
“I didn’t expect to get a great bag of goodies
from Origin for my art, but I was so excited
when we had afternoon tea and I got my
prize and spent time with other winners and
my family.”
The catering at the Chinchilla afternoon tea
was done by six hospitality trainees who
are almost at the end of their 20-week Qld
Government Skilling Queenslanders for
Work Program, which both members of the
Chinchilla Community Centre and Origin
thought was really great.
CHINCHILLA
RACE CLUB
RACING
TOWARDS
NEW SEASON
WITH NEW
IMPROVEMENTS
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
When Don Critch and Kirty
Mitchell joined the Chinchilla Race
Club committee as president and
secretary respectively, two and a
half years ago they didn’t take the
decision lightly.
With a desire to run the club correctly and take
it to the next level the pair can confidently
say through a lot of hard work and stress they
have achieved this with some recent projects.
Last Saturday, October 31, past and present
members, sponsors and special guests all
gathered for the grand reopening of the
racecourse where they were able to see
significant upgrades that have recently been
completed.
The club has managed to secure $471,000 in
grant money and undertaken nine projects.
“The first grant we achieved was from the
Department of Racing and was about $150
000 to secure a brand new inside and outside
running rail for the track and a couple of new
sheds,” Mr Critch said.
“One of which will house our new barriers.”
Usually having to use generators on race day,
so they were able to hold race meetings, the
club also secured a $5000 phase three power
upgrade through the Stronger Communities
grant.
They also received a second grant as part of
the Stronger Communities grant given out by
David Littleproud which was $20,000 to allow
them to cement one of the horse’s stables.
“Earlier this year Samantha Leutton came on
board as our coordinator, and she has hit the
ground running,” Mr Critch said.
“She has been very diligent in chasing down
grants to benefit the club.
“One of the significant grants she got was for
$66,000 for shade sails which I think are a great
addition to our club.
“We were also able to secure our marque.”
However, growing up and around racehorses
and racetracks, Mr Critch said the most
significant grant for him was the $149,000
from the Department of Racing for brand new
barriers on a transportation trailer.
With the old barriers used for the past 50
years, they were more than coming to the end
of their life.
They had no padding meaning horses could
cut themselves and had no lower barriers so
the horses could kick each other or even duck
underneath them, both of which are safety
features the new barriers have.
“This grant is probably one of the most
important safety-wise for our club,” Mr Critch
said.
“On behalf of the club, trainers, jockeys, horses
and barrier staff, we have to say thank you to
Wally Gleeson for his tireless work of hunting
down the barriers.”
The final major project the local club has
achieved this year was their kitchen upgrade.
Thanks to a QGC grant, a Western Downs
Regional Council grant and the Gambling
Fund Grants they were able to fix the building
itself and upgrade the equipment inside.
“We are a community club, and we support
many clubs in town with our racing days and
events from Apex to Scouts and Rotary to
Lions,” Mr Critch said.
$7000 WORTH OF PRIZES UP FOR GRABS
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
Residents could receive the
perfect early Christmas present
for simply shopping local after
the Chinchilla Community
Commerce and Industries (CCCI)
have launched their annual
campaign.
Launching just a week and a half ago,
President of the CCCI said the Use Your Melon
Buy Local Campaign serves as an annual
encouragement to shop local and in a year
were almost all businesses were effected
dramatically by the pandemic, it might be the
most important year to get involved.
“The CCCI are dedicated to raising awareness
of the importance to shopping local and
supporting our local retail sector,” she said.
“The Use Your Melon Buy Local Campaign
has been running for quite a few years now
and has a history of amazing prizes donated
by local businesses to reward people for
Shopping in Chinchilla.”
The initiative works by CCCI providing
participating businesses with prize draw entry
forms they can then offer their customers as
an incentive to shop locally.
These entries then go into raffle prize draws
and with a record amount of prize money up
for grabs, residents are going to want to shop
till they drop and get as many entries as they
can.
“This year we have worked with some of our
larger members Origin, MPC Kinetic and QGC
to provide $7,000 worth of vouchers as our
prizes taking the pressure of retailers,” Ms
Haig said.
“We will be drawing $1,000 winners in both
October and November and our Major Prize
of $5,000 voucher on Christmas Eve which
can only be spent at participating stores in
Chinchilla.
“Shop at one of the participating businesses
listed on our website to enter.”
The major prize draw will be run a little
differently this year due to COVID-19.
Usually drawn at the annual Christmas Street
Party, this event is looking unlikely to go
ahead this year so all 2020 draws will be video
“What many people may not be aware of is the racing club
doesn’t get one cent from the canteen takings on race days.
“It’s just one way we give back the community”.
Pouring her blood sweat in tears into the grants process
and upgrades, Mr Critch said Kirty needed to be thanked for
making the enhancements possible and seeing them come to
fruition.
“Kirty is the backbone of the race club,” he said.
“The work she does is unbelievable, and I’m very proud and in
awe of what she does for the club.”
The general public will be able to make full use of the new
projects at the first race with patrons since COVID this Saturday,
November 7 with six races to take place.
Gates at the Chinchilla Race Club open at 12pm, however, no
tickets will be available at the gate.
Patrons wanting to attend must prepurchase their tickets by
visiting www.trybooking.com/BLWJW.
streamed on social media.
Also, in the past, winners had to be present at
the Street Party for them to receive the prize
and it would redraw until they found the
present winner.
However, this year as a result of there being
no guarantee of a live draw there will be no
‘be there to win it’ requirement for the Major
prize making all shoppers eligible.
If your business would like to be part of the
initiative or your eager to know what shops to
spend your money at, visit https://chinchilla.
com.au/ or contact the chamber directly.
CELEBRATING TEACHERS IN A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
It's been an unprecedented year
for so many but for teachers across
the state they have continued
to show their support and
professionalism and resilience,
striving everyday to do their best
for their students.
On Friday, October 30, Queensland teachers
were acknowledged and celebrated for all
their hard work on World Teachers Day.
Chinchilla State School celebrations included
a breakfast put on by the P and C and a
special morning tea which was organised by
the teacher aids at the school.
During the morning Principal, Chris Gilbert
handed out certificates to four teachers to
recognise their teaching milestones.
The longest-serving teacher to be recognised
on Friday was Andrew Dixon who has been
with the school for 30 years in various roles
such as a music teacher, classroom teacher
and currently as Head of Curriculum.
"My job involved everything curriculum
from the connections about what is taught
in the classroom, supporting teachers with
professional development and working with
students," Mr Dixon said.
"My job mostly is about working with
teachers and making sure they understand
the curriculum they have to teach, offering
them different approaches and ways to teach
in their classrooms to deal with the student's
needs that they have in the classroom."
Initially having a passion for geography and
music, Mr Dixon thought the only way to
teach both of those was to become a teacher.
After trying the high school route, he found
he didn't like it and was more targeted
towards younger students and as a result
changed his major to primary music.
He taught music for nine years, then became
a classroom teacher, spent two years away as
a Principal at Hopeland before returning to
administration after the school closed.
He says the best part of his role has to be the
students and the relationships he has created
with them.
"That's probably the best part of my day is
when I'm working with students," Mr Dixon
said.
"Every day, they make you smile, and there
is something that makes you want to come
back every day and work with them.
"They will say something, do something or
make a strong connection with you.
"Some of the kids I'm working with now, I
worked with their parents when they were
here.
So there's a lot of connections for me at the
school after so long.
"I see our job has become much more
significant than being a teacher.
"Family environments and structures have
changed so much, and for some students, the
teacher is the only constant person they have
in their lives.
"They feel safe and comfortable with those
people.
"So not only is there the teaching aspect, but
there's also that connection you make with
students as a person as well."
During his time Mr Dixon has fallen in
love with the school and the way they pull
together in adversity and difficulty and in the
good times as well so he says he isn't going
anyway yet.
"I've still got a few good years of teaching left
in me and I look forward to the years to come
at Chinchilla State School," he said.
On the other end of the spectrum is year two
teacher Erin Fitzpatrick who has only been at
the school for fourteen short weeks since the
beginning of term three.
Starting at an unusual time with students
coming back from at-home learning due to
the pandemic, Mrs Fitzpatrick said it was a
challenging time however, it still has been
enjoyable.
"Coming in after COVID it was a challenging
time to start, but it's been going well," she
said.
"Getting them back into the flow was
challenging and then catching them on
concepts they might have missed when
learning from home which also made it hard
to figure out where they were at and meet
their needs.
"However, my time has been excellent.
"I'm in grade two, and I love my students, and
they are the most rewarding part of my day.
"Just seeing those lightbulb moments and
developing those relationships with them
has been rewarding."
It has been a long journey for Mrs Fitzpatrick
after starting in prosecutions it was a career
change; however, once she found the perfect
time to enrol in teaching at university, she has
never looked back.
"It's a very tight-knit group of people at
the school, and everyone seems to know
everybody, and it's friendly, so they welcomed
me with open arms when I came in," she said.
"I also really enjoyed getting to know the
students and their families and teaching
some siblings this year.
"Teaching is challenging, but if you love it, it is
the best job you can have, and I can't imagine
myself doing anything else."
CHINCHILLA NETBALL 2020 SEASON COMES TO AN END
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
In an end to what has been a
challenging year with the season
in doubt of even going ahead,
the Chinchilla Netball Inc. has
officially wrapped up their season
in style.
On Friday night the club hosted three epic
grand finals which showcased to spectators
some strong talent within the sides before
the annual presentations were held to finish
the night.
In the curtain-raiser, it was the Under 12
representative team taking on the Under 14
representative team.
Despite a convincing win by the U14s, the
opposition stepped up to the plate with a
strong performance against an older, more
experienced team.
Despite only coming together and playing
for the term because of the disruptions due
to COVID, Chinchilla Netball Inc President
Kimberly Lingard said both teams showed
great promise.
"Although it wasn't the season we wanted,
the girls still came together and played in
games against the senior woman's and in
carnivals which was great to see," she said.
"The Under 12's did so well and won their
division at this year's carnival, which was
awesome.
"We look forward to seeing these girls
continue to improve and one day play in our
senior's lady's competition."
This year's senior's ladies competition was
under the reigns of young Sallie Sommerfeld
who has been a part of the club for some
time.
"This year has been my first year as ladies
coordinator, and I really enjoyed my time
working in the role," Sal said.
Taking the competition in a new direction
this year the club has a senior ladies' social
competition who played their grand final
after the Under 12 and 14 match.
The Slick Chicks and Diamonds were the
teams fortunate enough to make it to the
final game and went head to head in what
was an extremely tight tussle.
At times the two teams were unable to be
separated, but it was the Slick Chicks who
managed to dig deep and get over the line
by just one goal in a 15-14 victory.
After putting in the hard yards for her team, it
was Jessie Edwards who was lucky enough to
be chosen as the player of the finals.
The third and final match of the game was the
division one between Milchin and Hotshots
in a show of raw talent.
Despite the talent of the Salisbury sisters for
Milchin helping them walk away with the win,
Hotshots were always close to the margin
and not once looked entirely out of the game.
A special mention must go to Sallie
Sommerfeld for her effort during the final,
with her performance worthy enough of
winning player of the final.
Once all three games were complete
the night ended with the efforts of the
committee, umpires, coaches and players
with presentations.
The highest honour of the night went to Kylie
Salisbury who was selected the Club Person
of the Year.
"Normally, we select someone from the
committee, but this year Kylie brought
something special to our club," Lingard said.
"She has helped lend a hand to coach juniors,
always available whenever we need her, has
gone long distances with their representative
netball including playing for the Panthers and
is just an absolutely wonderful human being."
The other award winners included:
UNDER 14 REPRESENTATIVE TEAM
MVP - Azaria Tivalu
Coaches Choice - Bella Franz
Players Player - Maddison Flint
UNDER 12 REPRESENTATIVE TEAM
MVP - Cadence Vermeij
Coaches Choice - Ebony Leigh-Bateman
Players Player - Emma Wright
OPEN REPRESENTATIVE TEAM
MVP - Olivia Mutch
Coach's Award - Grace Bourke
Players Player - Chloe Lawton
LADIES COMPETITION MVP OF THE
SEASON
Social - Jessie Edwards & Arizia Tivalu
Div 1 - Tillie Smith
With the season now officially finished, the
club is now looking forward to the netball
season next year and are hoping that it is
one filled with more games and more people
involved.
The club is looking forward to stepping foot
on the brand-new outdoor netball courts
at the Chinchilla State High School which
construction is now underway.
"I have to thank everyone involved for their
help with obeying the COVID rules and
signing in and out, keeping their distance
and using the hand sanitiser because without
their cooporation we wouldn't have been
able to hold the season," Lingard said.
"I also have to thank the high school for once
again hosting us, we all enjoy playing at such
a beautiful facility.
"Heading into next year, the new courts are
going to be such an asset to our club, and we
are hoping that it brings more people in.
"However, in saying that a bigger and better
season will mean we need for people to assist
our club, so I want to encourage anyone in
the community to get involved because it is
so rewarding.
"It may be a little scary at first, but it's worth it,
and anyone can do it.
"Sal, for example, is so young but has joined,
got involved, taken ladies in a different and
given us some youthful spirit.
"The committee are so supportive, and it
can be as simple as helping set up and back
down, it makes a huge difference."
THE CHIN WAG - WEDNESDAY November 4, 2020 - Page 8

ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
It’s been a busy weekend for
Football Chinchilla as teammates
of the senior teams attended
an awards ceremony as well as
playing vital final matches.
On Friday night Club President Ross Cardillo,
life member Joe Calleja, Honeybears captain
Nikola Stevenson and Bears Captain and
MVP nominee Jonty Calleja travelled to
Toowoomba for the TFL presentation night at
Clifford Park.
During the night’s proceedings Stevenson
accepted the minor premiership trophy for
the ladies championship division.
Unfortunately, Calleja was beaten out for
MVP on the men’s Conference Division.
During the presentations the top six goal
scorers from each division were announced
and the club were proud to have such a
strong representation in the running for
golden boot.
Nick Guymer finished 3 rd in the men’s
Conference with 12 goals.
For the Honeybears Bonnie Callaghan
finished 6 th with 6 goals, Nikola Stevenson
finished 4 th with 7 goals and Sally Carroll
came in 2 nd with 14 goals.
Special mention should be made that
Callaghan, who she is the Honeybear’s goal
keeper and scored all 6 goals in a single half
of one game.
They said they also should congratulate
Rachael Bartley on her selection to the
Toowoomba Football League All Stars team
who will play against the Thunder in an
exhibition match.
Ladies Premier division.
Then the following night it was the Bears
who started their final campaign against the
Garden City Raiders with both teams having
it all of the line as the looser was eliminated.
At the start of the year, Miles Saints Weightlifting
coach Sonia Stenhouse set herself the lift the
qualifying weights needed for the Master's
Games in Japan next year, despite it now being
postponed due to COVID.
With competitions already making her very nervous the lifter felt
the extra weight on her shoulders due to the added pressure as
she headed into the Masters Open competition.
Held at the Gold Coast on October 24, the competition included
over 40 lifters who were mostly from Queensland or people who
were stuck in Queensland from interstate due to COVID.
Stenhouse competed in the 55kg and put in a solid performance
which exceeded her expectations.
"I did a 40kg and a 61kg clean and jerk so a 91kg in total," she
said.
"I did five out six successful lifts, got a total personal best and
received a goal medal, so I was happy with that.
"Plus, I got a better total than I did in my first competition back in
March so that was good.
"To make things better I exceeded the 88kg qualifying total
needed for the Master Games next year, so it's happy days."
Generally used to competing in larger competitions, COVID forced
the Gold Coast event to have a limited amount of spectators. Still,
Stenhouse explained that suited her better, so she didn't mind.
BOTH FOOTBALL CHINCHILLA TEAMS
START FINAL SERIES STRONG
ZOE BELL
zoe@thechinwag.com.au
As per usual the Bears showed they know
how to perform in finals football with a 2-nil
win over Garden City.
Lachlan Cardillo capitalised first scoring from
Jayden Markham's corner, with Nick Guymer
showing why he is top 3 in the division for
goals with a confident 1v1 finish.
The second half was filled with cards with our
own Pete Swales picking up the first yellow
before one of the Raiders plays also found
themselves in the referee’s book.
Not long after the Garden City goal keeper
made a terrible judgement call, picking up
the ball outside of the box during a Chinchilla
goal scoring opportunity and found himself
having to immediately vacate the field
receiving a straight red.
Down to 10 men Garden City continued to
challenge hard in the game but instead of
resulting in a goal they picked up another
yellow.
The Bears continued to challenge in the final
minutes but couldn't find the back of the net
again, with a final score 2 nil.
The boys will now progress to the preliminary
final played next weekend where they will
play for the chance of a place in the grand
final.
Then following the success of the senior men’s
team it was now down to the Honeybears
who took on the Warwick Wolves on Sunday
afternoon for the opportunity to make it
straight through to the grand final.
The Honeybears managed to conquer
Warwick 5-4 during a dynamic semi-final of
epic proportions.
Poor pass completion and a lack of movement
hindered the Honeys at the start of the match
which the Wolves capitalised on quickly
taking out a 2-0 lead.
But after the first drinks break in the 30+
degree heat the Honeys regrouped and were
able to slide a precision ball through to Sally
Carroll on the burst, who jinxed the keeper
and found the back of the net.
Remarkably only a few minutes later they
were able to put together a carbon copy
of the play but with Elaina Riebe on the
receiving end.
She almost ran out of pitch but made in to
level the score 2-2.
Carroll was able to slot another goal before
the half time break to give the Honeys the
lead 3-2 at half time.
Returning from the break the Honey’s Carroll
found herself on the score sheet again taking
the lead to 4-2.
The Wolves started to press hard and heavy
and Kirsty Nothdurft received the first yellow
of her career for contesting a ball to heavily in
the box, leading to a penalty shoot.
Honeys keeper Bonnie Callaghan made the
save but the ladies elation was short lived
when the sideline official flagged her for
breaking the line - leading to her receiving a
yellow.
When the shot was retaking the Warwick
player was sure not to miss 4-3.
The honeys dug deep again and got Carroll
forward for her 4 th goal of the game 5-3.
With only approximately 5 minutes to go the
Honeys other centre back Kayla Hungerford
WEIGHTLIFTING COACH SWITCHES ROLES AND WINS GOLD
Stenhouse also said that it was very nice to catch up with her
fellow master's competitors and hear their encouragement as
she lifted.
It was also a family affair with Stenhouse's son Josh making the
trip to join the support crew and with her husband Ed Stenhouse
alongside her as her coach.
"There weren't any fights out the back, so that was good," she
said.
"His main job was to keep me calm, and he said it was best to do
that by keeping quiet, so that's what he did.
"He was a good coach and did enjoy it too.
"We call it our little adventures."
The Miles lifter typically spends her time coaching members of
the Saints Weightlifting club which she has spent the last twelve
weeks training and said it was nice to do something for herself.
"Having a competition to strive for was good because otherwise
you just get caught up in the kid's competitions and the lead-up
to those competitions," she said.
"So, it made me do a lot more, and I feel a lot better because of it,
and now I have to continue to push myself.
"I have to say thank you to the Australian Weightlifting Federation
for putting the comp on for us, we appreciate it.
"Now we just have to wait and see what happens next year and
see if it differs from this year."
Pictured right: Miles Saints Weightlifting coach Sonia Stenhouse
with husband and coach Ed.
also was deemed to have pulled a player
down, receiving a yellow for her effort and
awarding another penalty kick.
Callaghan again made the save but the
sideline official had his flag up again and the
ladies were devastated to see the ref pull out
his yellow card, then red with Callaghan sent
from the field.
With the honeys down to 10 Georgia Schloss
stepped into goal and was unfortunately
unable to stop the shot and the score was 5-4.
The final minutes were a scrimmage with
Warwick trying to find something special to
put them level and take the game to extra
time, but the Honeybears were determined
and relentless, winding the clock down to the
final whistle to come out on top.
While the Honeybears get the week off
Warwick will be battling Gatton in the
preliminary final to find out who will join
them on Saturday November 14 th for the
Grand Final.
COUNCIL SUPPORTS YOUNG
ENTREPRENEURS WITH NEW
YOUTH BUSINESS PROGRAM
Local Chambers of Commerce in collaboration with Western Downs
Regional Council are launching a brand-new program to support and
educate young businesspeople whilst encouraging local up-andcoming
entrepreneurs to follow their business dreams.
Delivered in collaboration between Council and the local Chambers of Commerce, the new
Western Downs Youth Business Program will showcase all the ins and outs of setting up a
business to students across the region.
Council Mayor Paul McVeigh said this initiative would equip youth with vital business
information whilst also supporting the local economy.
"This new program will be a fantastic resource for youth with a business idea and is another
step forward in strengthening the economic growth of our great region," Cr McVeigh said.
"Our schools offer a number of trade pathways and prepare many students for university
however we've identified a gap in business-ownership as a career pathway for youth.
"We've seen so many successful businesses built in our region and it's proof that
entrepreneurship plays an important part in our communities and our economy.
"Our communities are very supportive of youth development so we're also calling on local
business owners to join in on these sessions and share their successes with the participants.
"It's a pleasure to once again partner with our local Chambers to deliver this program and I
know it will inspire and support our youth to bring their innovative business ideas to life."
The Western Downs Youth Business Program will incorporate a range of different topics
including business start-up, building partnerships, understanding clientele, branding,
marketing, profits/loss, licenses, insurance, ABN, tax and more.
Young local resident Skye Boyd, 20, (pictured below) is the owner/co-owner of two local
businesses in the Western Downs and said she would have loved access to a program like this
upon starting her career.
"I definitely think a program or some sort of course like this would have helped when starting
my business and even now I believe it’d be something I would be interested in when thinking
about expanding my business as well - I feel like you can never be educated enough,” Mrs
Boyd said.
“The glamour of starting your own
business can slowly start to be overcome
by the large amount of responsibility that
comes with ABNs, taxes and insurances
– these things never crossed my mind
when first thinking of taking on clients.
"Having the opportunity or the chance to
access a program that covers everything
would be my top priority when starting
up, knowing that I cover all basis.”
As 2020 marks the pilot year for this
beneficial program, workshops will be
held at the libraries across the Western
Downs.
Following the sessions, the modules will
be published on Council's website for
young Western Downs residents to refer
to.
We are currently seeking local business
owners to support youth participants by
sharing their experiences at workshops
throughout November and December
and those interested are invited to
contact Council for more information.
THE SUNSMART SHADE CREATION
INITIATIVE IS CLOSING SOON
Cancer Council Queensland and
the Queensland Government
provide funding for shade
structures
Queensland kids will have more access
to shade thanks to funding from the
Queensland Government.
The 2020-2021 funding round of SunSmart
Shade Creation Initiative is closing soon.
Eligible Queensland organisations should
not miss this opportunity to apply for
funding for extra shade.
The initiative, led by Queensland Government
and Cancer Council Queensland, provides
80% funding with a maximum of $2000
for portable shade and up to $30,000
for permanent shade, for not-for-profit
organisations that cater to children 0-18
years.
Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris
McMillan urges eligible schools, sporting
clubs, childcare centres and community
groups to apply for the SunSmart Shade
Creation Initiative.
“We’re proud to partner with Queensland
Government to help provide shade and
improve the sun safety of Queensland kids,”
Ms McMillan said.
“Protecting your skin from the sun and other
forms of UV exposure is important at any age,
but sun protection is especially important
during childhood and adolescence.
“Skin damage can occur in as little as 10
minutes if you’re outdoors without sun
protection. Creating more shady spaces in
settings where young Queenslanders spend
a large portion of the day will help reduce
their exposure and skin cancer risk.”
The Mackay Brothers Football Club is a junior
sporting club that received funding for shade
through the 2019-2020 SunSmart Shade
Creation Initiative.
Vice President Gene Paterson says their
decision to apply for funding for shade was
driven by the hot Queensland sun and the
impact it had on community attendance to
games.
“Prior to the construction of the roof over the
deck, the players and supporters (parents,
grandparents, siblings) were exposed to
the tropical sun for most of the day,” said Mr
Paterson.
“People can now come early in the day and
sit on the deck in the shade and stay all day,
whereas in the past if you came to an Under
19’s game at 10 am, because of the exposure
to the sun (which does not go behind the
Clubhouse until after 2 pm) you would be
wanting to go home.”
Mr Paterson explained that the passing of
valued club members and supporters from
cancer also motivated their application for
better shade.
“If you live in North Queensland you become
conscious of skin cancer and its effects on
families.”
The comfort and safety of the Mackay
Brothers Football Club community has
vastly improved since the construction of
permanent shade earlier this year.
“The construction of permanent shade with
the support of Cancer Council Queensland
and Queensland Government, keeps people
out of the sun, avoids the necessity of putting
up and taking down tents and provides more
room and comfort for everyone.”
Applications for this round of the 2020-
2021 SunSmart Shade Creation Initiative
close at 5pm on November 9, 2020. To
WESTERN
DOWNS
RENEWABLES
SECTOR
CHARGING
AHEAD
WITH NEW
SOLAR FARM
APPROVAL
The Western Downs is demonstrating
its status as the energy capital of
Australia, with Western Downs
Regional Council approving a new
solar farm at Kumbarilla, adding to
an influx of renewables projects on
the go in the region.
The application by Elecseed Pty Ltd will see a
photovoltaic solar farm constructed at a vacant
200-hectare site on Kumbarilla Lane, Kumbarilla.
Western Downs Regional Council Mayor McVeigh
said the project would offer another injection
in the local economy, with around 144 jobs
expected to be created during construction.
“The Western Downs is open for business and
Council is serious about attracting the right
industries to stimulate growth in the local
economy both now, and into the future,” he said.
“Energy is one of our four economic pillars,
contributing to our overall Gross Regional
Product (GRP) of $4.7 billion and our strong,
diverse economy, and we’re seeing more and
more renewable energy projects coming online,
which is a huge vote of confidence in our region.”
Mayor Paul McVeigh said the region was pushing
ahead of the pack with several renewable energy
projects approved and under construction,
signalling hundreds of jobs.
“We have the right climate, landscape,
connectivity, infrastructure and skilled workforce
to support renewable energy projects, and
it’s fantastic to see another renewable energy
project given the green light,” Cr McVeigh said.
“This is the 23rd solar farm approval granted by
Council in the last four years, adding to an influx
of renewable projects worth a combined $4
billion to the Western Downs.
“On top of this, our region is also welcoming new
wind farms, such as the recently constructed
Coopers Gap Wind Farm, the approved Dulacca
Wind Farm and the newly approved Wambo
Wind Farm.
“Vena Energy has also started construction on
Queensland’s largest grid-scale battery, which
again solidifies the continued investment in
our region and its attractiveness for large-scale
renewable energy projects.
“These projects not only show strength in
our economy in the short to mid-term, it also
shows promising signs of long-term economic
certainty, which is great news for the Western
Downs.” Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise
Chief Executive Officer Ali Davenport said it was
exciting to see yet another major renewable
energy project approved on the Western Downs,
creating jobs and economic growth.
“The Western Downs Regional Council’s approval
process shows how serious they are about
cementing the region as an energy production
powerhouse and providing opportunities for
locals,” Ms Davenport said.
“Any renewable energy company within Australia
or overseas looking to invest in Queensland
should think seriously about the Western Downs
because of the access to energy infrastructure,
ideal climate and the professionalism of the
Western Downs Regional Council.”
talents, with tickets now available for the Regional
Artists’ Exhibition opening night on 7 November.
The free COVID-safe event will announce this year’s competition
winners and celebrate the opening of the premier artistic showcase,
which will feature at Gallery 107 @ Dalby over the coming weeks.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Community and
Cultural Development Councillor Kaye Maguire said the exhibition
was a significant event on the region’s annual arts calendar and
encouraged the community to get involved.
“The annual Regional Artists’ Exhibition gives our local creatives the
opportunity to showcase their talents and explore new ideas which
contributes to our active, vibrant communities,” Cr Maguire said.
“This year’s theme Phoenix encouraged our artists to consider
the concept of rising from the ashes and rebirth, which is a timely
theme given our community’s ongoing resilience in the face of
severe weather and the global pandemic.
“We had 34 artists contribute a combined 49 artworks, with the
pieces judged by Exhibition Curator and Senior Creative Arts
renowned creatives are being celebrated
as part of a new project to explore the
vibrant arts and culture community in
the Western Downs.
’10 Artists’ uses videography and photography to
capture the inspiration and passion behind some of
the region’s best artists, offering a virtual platform for
the arts community during the pandemic.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for
Community and Cultural Development Councillor
Kaye Maguire said the project was about celebrating
the great talents in our community and exploring their
lives beyond their art.
“The Western Downs is filled with so many incredible
individuals and this project is about uncovering their
talents and sharing their passion with the wider
community,” Cr Maguire said.
“Normally our arts community would have been out
and about exhibiting their work and being a part of the
community, but the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions
have made it difficult for our artists to gain exposure.
“Council is focused on creating active, vibrant
communities and this project is a fun, interactive way
to support the arts and cultural community we have
here in the region and raise the profile of these talented
individuals.”
The artists featured include Carol McCormack, Cindy
Grimes, Elizabeth Graetz, Graeme McCullough, Karen
Gaskell, Patricia Hinz, Regina Hyland, Ruth Storey,
Helen Dennis, and Dion Cross.
Each video runs for 1-2 minutes and gives an insight
into the personal lives of each artist, captured by
local photographer, Susan Jacobs and videographer
Geordie Lillis. The videos will be shared on Council’s
social media channels and used to promote the arts
community moving forward.
opportunities for local job seekers to further
their career or start a new one.
“On top of current vacancies, the Fair will
also highlight opportunities around the
region for a range of skillsets, with a panel of
businesses selected to present on upcoming
job prospects for major projects such as
renewable energy.
“Our region is bursting with vibrant lifestyle
opportunities and fantastic liveability, and
we want to do all we can to support local
residents and business.”
The Western Downs Jobs Fair will kick off at
4pm, 5 November at the Chinchilla Cultural
Centre.
Businesses are being urged to secure their
place as a stallholder as soon as possible, by
visiting https://www.wdrc.qld.gov.au/jobsfair/
The Western Downs Jobs Fair is a COVIDsafe
event and reservations are required
to ensure contract tracing. You can reserve
your ticket by visiting https://www.
eventbrite.com/e/western-downs-job-fairtickets-126160973869
Residents are reminded to stay home if they
feel unwell.
ARTISTS CELEBRATED THROUGH FILM
Featured artist Dion Cross said the project offered a
rare opportunity to reveal more about life as an artist
in the Western Downs.
“Our region is full of incredible people doing some
amazing work and these artist spotlights are a great
way to learn more about the different artists we have
here,” Mr Cross said.
“Creating art is good for the mind and good for the soul,
and it’s so great to be able to share this passion with
not only my own family, but the broader community.”
The 10 Artists project will feature in its own exhibition
in late November at Dogwood Crossing Miles.
SPRING PLANTING BEGINS FOR 'ADOPTED' STREET TREES
Western Downs Regional
Council's popular Adopt a
Street Tree program is bringing
more trees to the streets this
Spring as planting commences
across the region.
Adopt a Street Tree has been a significant
initiative of Council since its launch in
2017 and has since received thousands of
applications from residents of the Western
Downs.
Council Spokesperson for Recreational
Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn
Tillman said it was fantastic to see the
program go from strength to strength
across the region.
"Adopt a Street Tree is all about enhancing
the fantastic liveability of our communities
and it's been great to see so many people
getting involved over the years," Cr Tillman
said.
"Not only do the trees enhance our
community pride, but they're also critical
for our ecosystems and provide beautiful
shady spaces for residents to get out and
about in the region.
"The program has also turned into an
educational experience for many local
children as schools across the Western
Downs have registered to adopt their own
trees.
“Right now, our Parks and Open Spaces
Team is out and about planting this year’s
trees, and we’re also encouraging residents
to register their interest to be a part of next
year’s program.
"We're proud of the success of our
outstanding Adopt a Street Tree program
and I'm looking forward to seeing these
newest trees flourish over time."
Local Dalby resident Mrs Joan Hohnke
has recently received her trees through
Council’s latest round of Adopt a Street
Tree.
"I received two crepe myrtles a little over
two weeks ago, I received them just before
the recent storms and this rain is going to
be wonderful for them,” Mrs Hohnke said.
"I called Council and they took down all of
my details and let me know that I would
get my tree in the next round, it was a
really easy process.
"I was really impressed with how smoothly
the whole planting process went and how
large my trees were when they arrived.”
To apply for a street tree or to find out
more about the program, visit Council's
website at www.wdrc.qld.gov.au or
