nathan@thelockyer.com.au
As construction continues at the
site of Sophia College at Plainland,
the area has officially become Holy
Ground, following a ceremony last
week.
Future students and staff gathered at the
school grounds on Friday, October 30, for
the Blessing of the Soil by visiting Bishop Ken
Howell.
As part of the event, soil from several of the
school’s founding families was combined with
soil from the college site to plant an Illawarra
flame tree, which will grow into a lasting,
enduring symbol of the unity of the school’s
Catholic community.
Great progress has been made in the
school’s development in recent months, with
enrolments well underway, and buildings
and facilities beginning to take shape at the
grounds.
The College is aiming to open its doors in time
for the 2021 school year.
LOCKYER VALLEY REGIONAL COUNCIL
RECOGNISED FOR OUTSTANDING
RISK MANAGEMENT
Lockyer Valley Regional Council has won the quarterly 2019-20 Local
Government Mutual Services Risk Excellence Award for the Darling Downs
and South West Queensland region.
The Award is in recognition of Council’s Enterprise Risk Management Improvement Journey.
Lockyer Valley Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan accepted the Award at the Local Government Association of
Queensland (LGAQ) Annual Conference with Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Ian Church.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Chief Executive Officer, Ian Church said the implementation of the
Risk Management Framework allowed Council officers to have a shared understanding of risk for the
organisation.
“The framework is a tool, along with Council’s Risk Register, to help determine the amount of risk that
will be placed on the organisation from each decision.
“Risk is inevitable; however, we can utilise these tools to see where we can accept risk and where we
can lower the risk toward the business,” Mr Church said.
Mayor Milligan congratulated Council officers involved in achieving this outstanding outcome for the
organisation and Lockyer Valley community.
“This has been a three-year engaged process, utilising key stakeholders from right across the
organisation.
“We will now work towards embedding this framework into all of Council’s decision-making processes,”
Mayor Milligan said.
Award recipients were determined by their level of alignment with Australian Standard; their
efficiency, effectiveness and impact of the activity on reducing risk; and progress made in improving
risk management maturity.
Any project, initiative, activity or program undertaken by a Member of a Local Government Mutual
Services (LGMS) scheme within the preceding 12 months was considered eligible for recognition.
The Gaul Street Railway Crossing
in Gatton will be temporarily
closed for one week to determine
the likely impacts on the local
road network of any future Inland
Rail closure.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council will
implement a temporary closure of the
crossing, with traffic counters to be installed
to measure the volume of traffic on alternate
roads and routes.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Infrastructure
Portfolio Councillor, Janice Holstein said the
temporary closure is scheduled to begin on
Friday 6 November and be completed by
Friday 13 November 2020.
“This temporary closure is important to
help determine just what the impact on
the local road network will be if Inland Rail
permanently closes the Gaul Street Railway
TEMPORARY CLOSURE FOR GAUL STREET RAILWAY CROSSING
Crossing.
“As a Council, we’re committed to achieving
the best outcome for our community and it
is important to get a clearer idea as to what
the longer-term impacts would look like
if the proposed permanent closure by the
Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) does
go ahead.
“It’s vital we can best understand the impacts
of this proposed closure and lobby for the
appropriate mitigation,”Cr Holstein said.
The closure of the railway crossing at Gaul
Street is intended to take one week and will
require traffic to find alternate routes from
the north/south parts of Gatton.
Pedestrian access across the rail line at Gaul
Street will remain open during the temporary
closure.
FULL RADIOLOGY CENTRE IN FERNVALE
Fernvale’s expanding health
services are continuing to grow
with STAR Radiology’s new
addition, the Ultra Low Dose
Computer Tomography (CT)
machine.
STAR Radiology in Fernvale is now a full
comprehensive radiology centre providing
all general x-ray, dental (OPG), Ultrasound as
well as Interventional ultrasound (cortisone
injections) and Ultra Low Dose CT.
Dr. Andrew Timbs the owner of STAR
Radiology says “The new ultra low dose
CT technology is amazing. It allows us to
perform many CT scans for the equivalent
dose to a standard x-ray. It is the safest CT
scan available”.
STAR Radiology has been in Fernvale for 2
years now and has been striving to increase
their medical radiology services continuously.
Dr. Timbs says “It has been a tough two years
but it is very satisfying to finally have a full
service radiology centre for the community.
Everyone continually mentions how much
they dislike having to travel for radiology
services into Ipswich or Gatton.
There are very few radiology services we are
unable to do. It is very gratifying to know that
everyone no longer needs to travel and can
get their radiology services locally”.
A little known fact with radiology referral
forms is that it is the patients choice of what
centre they attend.
It does not matter what referral form you
receive from the doctor it is your choice what
centre you visit.
Dr. Timbs says “This is a very important point
for the public to be aware of. Most doctors in
the area still for some reason do not use our
referral forms regularly and do not make the
patient aware that there is a local imaging
centre.
This creates significant confusion for the
patients as most believe they need to attend
that centre on the referral form.
We have patients on a daily basis complaining
to us that their doctor has been sending them
to Ipswich and Gatton for the past two years
and they did not know we where in Fernvale.”
This makes it an easy decision to support
a local business with the added benefit
that you no longer need to travel the 20-30
minutes to Ipswich and Gatton and fight the
traffic, parking and wait times.
Dr. Timbs says “The technology we use for
our reporting is the leading in the industry.
Doctors have direct access to their images as
soon as the procedure had been completed
and all our reports are completed within 24
hours, most times far quicker. If an urgent
report is required we can complete it in a
matter of hours.”
Fernvale and the surrounding areas continue
to grow and having adequate medical
services is critical. Let's spread the word
and support our local businesses so we can
continue to have these amazing service in
our community.
LETTERS, COMMENT & ANNOUNCEMENTS
YOU’RE ALL CHAMPIONS
A THANK YOU TO LOCKYER
I would like to thank all those people who
voted for me on Saturday.
To my many supporters and volunteers who
worked throughout the last two months and
manned booths on election day....a huge
thank you.
You're all champions and you stand above the
rest by making a real personal effort to effect
change.
To the many current and past One Nation
members who helped me, thank you.
Unfortunately I misread the electorate.
I sincerely believed the residents of Lockyer
really wanted change.
I thought they wanted a real effort made
and policies to create more jobs, new water
and dams, tourism, a cannery, honesty in
Parliament and a representative that worked
only for them.
I thought they did NOT want unhindered drug
dealing here, Inland Rail destroying farms
properties and lives, and the legalised murder
of nine month old babies (full term abortion).
In hindsight it turns out
this is not the case.
The people have spoken
clearly and they now
have what they voted
for, an MP (and the LNP)
happy to bludge in
opposition and have an
excuse to NOT honour
any of its promises.
Gatton
Show societies in Rosewood and
Marburg will receive a share of
more than $2.1 million from the
Queensland Government’s Show
Societies Grants Program, to help
conduct their annual show.
Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden said
that with many shows having to be cancelled
in 2020 due to the pandemic, their return
would give local communities a muchneeded
lift.
“The local show is such an important part of
the fabric of our regions, towns and cities,
and offer a terrific opportunity for locals
to showcase their produce, livestock and
I write this letter to pass on my thanks to the people of Lockyer for putting their faith in me.
It was an honour to represent you in our great State’s Parliament over the last three years and
I can’t express how grateful I am that you have deemed me worthy to continue in this role for
another four years.
I humbly thank our team of supporters for their efforts during the last three years.
I believe this election wasn’t won in the last three months, but through the efforts of the last
three years.
I also thank the other candidates with whom I battled
to win Lockyer’s trust. It was a hard-fought campaign.
Now the hard work continues.
While we may not have won government, I won’t be
discouraged. I will continue to fight for the projects
and changes Lockyer needs and do all I can to secure
the funding from the current government to complete
these projects.
Thank you again for your support. If there is anything
I can do to assist please don’t hesitate to contact my
office on 5351 6100.
LET’S HOPE LESSONS ARE LEARNED
Last Saturday’s election was not as
unexpected as members of the LNP and their
leader seem to make out.
Deb Frecklington appears to be a nice lady
but many people knew months out from
the election that she had no penetration
as a leader, didn’t lay a blow on arguably
Queensland’s weakest Premier and was not
well liked by other women.
Usually a clear indicator that she was not
going to do well when she is not popular
with the female voters.
artisanship,” he said.
Mr Madden said it was important to recognise
that the shows give local economies a boost.
Across the region, the grants will assist Show
Societies including:
• Marburg & District A&I Assn - $8,656
• Rosewood A&H (Show) Assn - $7,025
• Ipswich Show Society - $27,535
The Show Societies Grants Program
provides financial support for operating
costs associated with conducting annual
agricultural shows, and costs towards
the construction and maintenance of
showground assets.
Let’s hope the LNP go to some lengths to
find a new visionary, charasmatic leader with
great public appeal and communication
skills and the ability to land some blows on
what will be a bumbling incompetent Labor
government.
How can you lose an election against a
government that didn’t release a budget?
The 2020-21 Show Societies Grants Program
UPGRADE
COMING
FOR FOREST
HILL BORE
SITE
The Forest Hill Bore Site will
receive an upgrade this month
following a funding injection from
the Queensland Government.
Lockyer Valley Infrastructure Portfolio
Councillor Janice Holstein said a range of
projects would be undertaken in the upgrade.
“Council will upgrade the road and site
drainage at the Forest Hill Bore water loading
area, which will include the vehicle turnaround
area and the road entry and exit points.
“A concrete slab will be installed directly in
front of the bore and Queensland Urban
Utilities outlets.
“A temporary load point will also be installed
to allow for access for water users with Councilissued
keys during the construction period.
“The works will go a long way towards
improving access to the Forest Hill Bore Site
and will eliminate the large potholes that fill
with water during rain,” Cr Holstein said.
Council will install a temporary load point
away from the work site for access by those
with keys, so water will still be accessible.
This project is funded under the Queensland
Disaster Risk Reduction & Resilience Funding
(QDRRRF).
TURF CLUB CELEBRATES
SUCCESSFUL MEMORIAL DAY
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
With the past few weeks being
rife with wet, windy weather, the
Lockyer Turf Club were fortunate
to have clear skies for their
Memorial Race Day event earlier
this month.
The nine-race program featured several major
events, including the Greg Elliot Memorial
Trophy, Hec Freeman Memorial, and the
James O'Dwyer Memorial Apprentice Jockey
Cup.
History was a major focus of the event, with
a display on show throughout the day for
visitors to view, featuring photos, plaques,
and other memorabilia from throughout the
club’s storied past.
Several local horses and riders added their
names to the history books over the course
of the day, with several familiar faces from the
region placing during the events.
annual James O'Dwyer Memorial Apprentice
UNIVERSITY
CANCELS
LANTERN
PARADE
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
Yet another community event
in the region was cancelled last
week, but in a welcome change of
pace, the decision had nothing to
do with COVID-19.
The University of Queensland campus in
Gatton intended to host a lantern parade
on their central walkway on the evening of
October 28.
The purpose of the event was to “shine a light”
on safety and wellbeing issues, and reflect on
the many challenges that 2020 has brought
to the community, with a march through the
campus, lighting up the night with lanterns.
Following the march, the event was set to
conclude with a moment of silence, them
an outdoor barbeque with live music and
entertainment.
Unfortunately, due to a storm passing through
the region, as part of the pattern of longawaited
wet weather that has swept through
the region his week, organisers were forced to
cancel the parade.
A similar event held on an evening later in the
week at another UQ campus was able to go
ahead, and the campus have said they plan to
try to host another lantern parade at Gatton
next year.
ROPELEY AND
FLAGSTONE
CREEK WASTE
FACILITIES TO
CLOSE
Lockyer Valley Regional Council
has approved the closure of the
Ropeley and Flagstone Creek
waste facilities.
The closure was approved at Council’s October
Ordinary meeting and forms part of Council’s
past Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan 2012
(WRRP).
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Waste
Portfolio Councillor Jason Cook said both sites
had a history of inappropriate use.
“Unfortunately, both the Ropeley and
Flagstone Creek waste facilities have been the
target of illegal dumping for many years now.
“The sites continue to be used inappropriately,
placing the wider community, contractors and
our environment at risk,” Cr Cook said.
The WRRP stipulates it necessary to reduce and
remove unsupervised bin sites at all locations
across the region following the introduction of
the kerbside waste and recycling bins.
Both sites, located at Wesslings Road, Ropeley
and Stockyard Creek Road, Flagstone Creek
will close on 1 February 2021.
Cr Cook said Lockyer Valley Regional Council
provides eight transfer stations across the
region and residents who frequent both sites
have access to five of these transfer stations,
all within 20 minutes of the current sites.
“We’re proud to partner with
Queensland Government to help
provide shade and improve the
sun safety of Queensland kids,” Ms
McMillan said.
“Protecting your skin from the sun
and other forms of UV exposure
is important at any age, but sun
protection is especially important
during childhood and adolescence.
“Skin damage can occur in as little as
10 minutes if you’re outdoors without
sun protection. Creating more shady
spaces in settings where young
Queenslanders spend a large portion
of the day will help reduce their
exposure and skin cancer risk.”
The Mackay Brothers Football Club is
a junior sporting club that received
funding for shade through the 2019-
2020 SunSmart Shade Creation
Initiative.
Vice President Gene Paterson says
their decision to apply for funding
for shade was driven by the hot
Queensland sun and the impact it had
on community attendance to games.
“Prior to the construction of the
roof over the deck, the players and
supporters (parents, grandparents,
siblings) were exposed to the tropical
dog park, nature play elements, shelters,
barbecues and more.
Located at Lot 902, Fairway Drive, Kensington
Grove, the all-abilities park will be a hub for
family and community gatherings and offer
enjoyable experiences for children and adults
alike.
Lockyer Valley Mayor, Cr Tanya Milligan said
Council was excited to see this project come
to life.
“What we want is for this park to become a
vibrant community hub.
“This is an exciting project and one that for us
as a Council, we are so eager to see brought to
life because it is the first time our community
has been involved in a park design from the
very beginning.
“We thank both the Australian and
Queensland Governments for the funding
support they have provided to this project,
which will benefit our community for many
years to come,” Mayor Milligan said.
The successful contractor, TLCC, has
significant experience with similar projects
sun for most of the day,” said Mr Paterson.
“People can now come early in the day and
sit on the deck in the shade and stay all day,
whereas in the past if you came to an Under
19’s game at 10 am, because of the exposure
to the sun (which does not go behind the
Clubhouse until after 2 pm) you would be
wanting to go home.”
Mr Paterson explained that the passing of
valued club members and supporters from
cancer also motivated their application for
better shade.
“If you live in North Queensland you become
conscious of skin cancer and its effects on
families.”
The comfort and safety of the Mackay
Brothers Football Club community has
vastly improved since the construction of
of this scale and will engage local contractors
and suppliers, where possible, for relevant
parts of the project.
The construction of Fairways Park Stage 1 is
expected to begin next month, with works
to be completed by July 2021, weather
permitting.
Council and the contractors will ensure
appropriate wildlife and environmental
practices are used to preserve as much of the
natural environment as possible. Construction
fencing and signage will be present to ensure
the safety of workers and the public. Council
apologises for any inconvenience this work
may cause and thanks all residents for their
patience during construction.
The Fairways Park Stage 1b, 1c and 1d is a
joint initiative of Lockyer Valley Regional
Council and the Queensland Government.
“The construction of permanent shade with
the support of Cancer Council Queensland
room and comfort for everyone.”
FARMERS ON HIGH ALERT AS
NEW PEST IS FOUND
For the first time in the region's
history, an invasive pest called
Fall Armyworm has been detected
in the Lockyer Valley, Chinchilla,
and St George posing a threat to
Queensland’s crop production.
The fall armyworm has been spreading across
the nation after it was first detected in January
on two Torres Strait islands before it arrived
on the mainland at Bamaga in February.
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries
principal entomologist Dr Melina Miles said
southern Queensland farmers need to be on
high alert.
"Given fall armyworm was recently detected
in the several parts of southern Queensland,
growers should be watching both the level of
activity in local traps and closely monitoring
the vegetative state of their crops," Dr Miles
said.
"They can work with their entomologist to
identify the signs that fall armyworm are
active and to distinguish them from native
armyworms.
"The risk in northern NSW and central
Queensland, in places like Emerald and the
Darling Downs is real and growers there need
to be on high alert."
Dr Miles said for sorghum growers it was
important to inspect the crops during
the vegetative stage and not just from
head emergence, particularly if traps were
indicating the pest was active to the north or
west of their property.
She said there was still a lot to learn about the
effects of the pest on Australian crops.
"We've not previously seen a pest that can
reduce the amount of functioning leaf area
to the point where it warrants control in
the vegetative stage, and that is what fall
armyworm is doing - particularly in maize and
sweet corn," Dr Miles said.
DAF has been working with Pacific Seeds to
help provide growers with tools to manage
the pest.
This includes developing an integrated
pest management strategy and simulating
damage at varying crop stages to assist in
refining the timing of control measures.
Pacific Seeds summer grains agronomist
Trevor Philp said farmers need to be aware of
the risks.
"The spread of this pest could have unknown
consequences for what promises to be a
strong growing season, with a La Nina event
driving potentially good rainfall across
Australia," Mr Philp said.
"That's why we are working closely with the
department to help give growers the tools to
manage this invasive pest.
"Currently we're simulating fall armyworm
damage on corn to see when growers should
be intervening to avoid detrimental damage.
"This is because fall armyworm damage can
look worse than it is, and we don't want
growers intervening with pesticides until it's
necessary to do so."
CHRISTMAS CARDS 4 FARMERS
INITIATIVE LAUNCHED
As the countdown to Christmas
begins, Rural Aid is asking
Australian school students to
take the time to lift the spirits of
farmers around the nation.
CEO of Rural Aid, John Walters said that in
addition to the anguish caused by the COVID
pandemic that has affected all Australians,
farmers across the country have endured years
of record-breaking droughts, devastating
floods and catastrophic bushfires.
Rural Aid is one of Australia’s largest rural
charities. Well known for the highly successful
‘Buy a Bale’ campaign, the charity also
provides financial assistance, water and
counselling to farmers in times of drought,
flood or fire.
“After such a difficult year, we want to put a
smile on the faces of Aussie farmers. Students
can make this possible by getting their school
involved in our Christmas Cards 4 Farmers
initiative.”
“We’re getting ready to start sending our
farmers and their families some Christmas joy
this year and we need your help.”
Rural Aid says you can show our farmers
that you’re thinking of them by creating
homemade cards with a special and personal
message.
Mr Warlters said that despite the geographical
distance, the relationship between every
Australian and the farming community is real.
“The reality is that if you eat food or wear
clothes, you’re a partner in Australian farming.
From fruit and vegetables to bread, meat,
cotton and wool, our farmers are central to
our everyday life even if we live hours from
the closest farm.”
Mr Warlters said the Christmas Cards 4
Farmers campaign has been influential in
previous years.
“In the past, the letters that schoolchildren
have written to our farmers have had an
incredible impact on the farmers’ mental
health. In one special case, a schoolgirl
named Matilda wrote a letter to a farmer in
need which helped save his life.”
Help Rural Aid continue this tradition by
creating your homemade card and sending it
in before November 19.
To help Rural Aid distribute them as quickly
as possible:
• The cards cannot be larger than 120mm x
170mm. You could fold a bigger card down to
that size but this is the maximum size we will
be sending on.
• Do not put your cards in an individual
envelope. Instead, place all of them in a bigger
envelope and mail them to Rural Aid at:
PO Box 1342, Sunnybank Hills QLD 4109
• Rural Aid will have thousands of envelopes
here ready to put your card in and send onto
an Aussie farmer.
students to send a message to primary
producers this year.
Nun of your
business ...
While shopping in a food store, two nuns
happened to pass by the beer, wine, and
liquor section. One asked the other if she
would like a beer.
The second nun answered that, indeed, it
would be very nice to have one, but that
she would feel uncomfortable purchasing
it.
The first nun replied that she would handle
it without a problem. She picked up a sixpack
and took it to the cashier.
The cashier was surprised, so the nun said,
This is for washing
our hair.
Without blinking
an eye, the cashier
reached under the
counter and put a
package of pretzel
sticks in the bag with
the beer.
The cashier said, “the
curlers are on me”.
A knock at the
door ...
A woman answered her front door and saw
a little boy holding a list.
“Ma’am,” he explained, “I’m on a scavenger
hunt, and I still need three grains of wheat,
a pork-chop bone and a piece of used
carbon paper so I can earn a dollar.”
“Wow,” the woman replied. “Who sent you
on such a challenging hunt?”
“My babysitter’s boyfriend.”
THE LOCKYER - Thursday November 5, 2020 - Page 14
Veterans Division 2; Toowoomba v Lockyer/
Ipswich at Harristown High school.
The visitors were sent into bat and despite
having three batsmen out to first ball ducks,
made nine for 209 off 45 overs, and then
kept control of the match by restricting
Toowoomba to all out 168 in the 45th over.
MoM Keith Muller and skipper Brad Hines
had a quick fire 39 run opening partnership
before
Lockyer/Ipswich collapsed to five for 46,
batsmen 3,4,5,&6 all going for ducks. Brian
Olsen joined Muller to rescue the innings to
five for 112. Ian Kimlin then took over from
Muller leading the fight back, and with Col
Taylor and David Frampton carried the score
to 194.
Keith Muller then returned to the crease to
bring up a very well deserved 50.
The bottom half of the batting order did a
very good job in getting Lockyer/Ipswich to
a defendable total. Ian Kimlin batted very
well for 32 n/o, Col Taylor hit hard for 38 and
David Frampton defended well for 16. Noel
McIntyre with five for 32 off eight overs was
clearly the pick of the Toowoomba bowlers,
and once again just missed another hat trick
this season.
Several Toowoomba batsmen got starts but
Email sports results & news to: news@thelockyer.com.au
LOCKYER VETERANS CRICKET
failed to on with it. Best were Chris Herdon 20
retired, David Ross and Owen Strohfeld with
28 apiece. The home side ended up all out for
only 168 in the 45 over.
Glen Gotting cleaned up Mick Fogarty early,
then came back to claim the last two wickets
to finish with 3 for 10 of 7.2 overs. Col Taylor
got into the middle order to claim 3 for 41 off
8 overs and Jeff Evens with 2 for 11 off 8 gave
nothing away.
The two standout players of the day, Keith
Muller for the visitors and Noel McIntyre
for the home side were the deserved MoM
awardees.
Lockyer/Ipswich captain Brad Hines said
that despite his quick fire 25, the pitch was
not conducive to quick scoring as it had
low bounce. Several batsmen were bowled
hitting onto the stumps.
Keith Muller said it felt good to make a 50 in
his comeback season. This was the last round
of the season in Division two for veteran’s
cricket.
Lockyer/Ipswich finished in third place on 12
points, with first place Brisbane on 14 points,
but well clear of the rest of the field.
Saturday, a cool start to the afternoon shoot
BOWLS CLUB BROADENING HORIZONS WITH NEW RESTAURANT
NATHAN GREAVES
nathan@thelockyer.com.au
The COVID-19 pandemic has
forced many businesses to reevaluate
and change, including
the Gatton Bowls Club, which
has seized upon the opportunity
to diversify its services with new
restaurant and café options.
Previously the club leased out the dining
space and kitchen in its main building, but
with the pandemic making it difficult to find
a new client, the club decided to launch their
own restaurant: Sage on Hickey.
“We couldn’t find a new person to lease the
premises to, especially with COVID-19. We
decided to go down this road of trying to do
it ourselves,” Treasurer David Brann said.
“We’re trying to move away from being a
normal bowling club, to something a bit
different. We’re having different personnel
coming in, different ideas are coming
forward, and the board is looking forward to
those changes.”
Local Kim Clarke has stepped up as the new
Kitchen/Bistro Manager, and said she was
excited to push the business towards success.
“I’ve got over 40 years experience in kitchen
and hospitality, so hopefully with my
knowledge and the knowledge that David
has from working in bowls clubs, we can drive
it to a steady little business,” she said.
“There’s not a lot of options in Gatton for
food, so sort of keeping it simple and keeping
it affordable is what the aim is.”
David said keeping prices modest was one
of the key goals for the business, and there
would also be an additional discount for
senior customers, and Gatton Bowls Club
members.
“That’s the main thing, that it’s fresh and
affordable for the middle-of-the-road
person,” he said.
“We’re going to run specials all the time, so
there’s something different each time.”
Kim said the plan was to rotate the menu
every four weeks, changing items and
offering to ensure there is consistent variety,
especially for club members and other visitors
who would regularly visit.
The restaurant will cater to allergies and
other dietary requirements, and encouraged
customers to make their own suggestions
and requests.
“If it’s not on the menu, ask,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of
having a family-friendly environment for
visitors.
“We cater for families as well. A lot of places
aren’t children-friendly, I’ve seen how some
places over the years really don’t tolerate
children,” she said.
“I like to have it as a
family environment
so that people
are comfortable
bringing their kids.
It’s a fact of life,
children exist – we
started that way,
and we have to
cater to that.”
The size of Sage
on Hickey’s dining
space makes it
ideal for functions,
but even when
closed for events,
there will still be
space in the bar
area outside for
regular customers
to sit and eat.
“If we’ve got a function for say, sixty people,
we can close that down so they’ve got full
privacy, the whole run of the place, and they
can meet out here and have their drinks
before they go in,” Kim said.
“And if anyone comes in and the bistro’s
closed, they can still sit and eat out here. We
won’t close down the food sales just for that.”
Like most businesses, the Gatton Bowls Club
has clear COVID-safe measures in place,
The Sage on Hickey restaurant is currently
open Friday and Saturday evenings, with
plans to expand to other evenings depending
on interest.
The restaurant will also be opened up on
other days, for groups who book functions,
with expressions of interest already being
made for Christmas and other functions.
“We’re not opening of a daytime for lunch,
because there’s too much competition on the
main street,” Kim said.
“We’re open to the public on Wednesdays for
lunch only, because we already have a little
group that comes through on those days.”
In addition to the restaurant space, the bowls
club is expanding its other services, including
a café complete with Merlo Coffee, run from
the bar area in the front of the building.
“We are going to run our own little coffee
shop, we’ll have toasted sandwiches,
milkshakes, all that kind of jazz.” Bar Manager
Denise Harris said.
The café will operate independently from the
restaurant, but both businesses will be able to
share dining space to accommodate for large
groups such as bus tours and functions.
Denise said the club was offering a range of
other options to help attract more visitors.
“We have bar specials, we have Get on the
Greens on Wednesday nights, we have
volleyball competitions,” she said.
“If people want to play volleyball they can
hire the courts, they can hire the bowls and
the greens if they want to play bowls. We just
want people to come in, and have a good
time in our club.”
The Gatton Bowls Club and Sage on Hickey
restaurant are located at 1 Hickey Street,
Gatton, on the other side of the railway line
from the CBD.
