Meeting to discuss
rising sea levels
PEOPLE LIVING in the
Lyttelton and Mt Herbert areas
will be the first to be consulted
on over the impact of rising sea
levels.
The city council has agreed
to start adaptation planning
with low-lying
coastal and
inland communities
likely to
be impacted by
rising sea levels.
A meeting
will be held
Mike
Davidson
on Monday,
6-7.30pm, Allandale
Hall,
Governors Bay.
Said urban development and
transport committee chairman
Mike Davidson: “We have a big
coastline and a lot of low-lying
land, so one of the most significant
challenges facing us is how
do we respond to the coastal
hazards caused by climate
change and sea level rise.
“First up, it’s important we
have a city-wide conversation
about the adaptation planning
process as there are implications
for all residents, not just people
CONSULTATION: The city council will be talking to
communities likely to be impacted by rising sea levels.
living in coastal and low-lying
communities. We have some big
decisions ahead of us that will
likely have an impact not just on
this generation, but on generations
to come.
“We then need to work closely
with our first tranche of communities,
to develop an adaptation
plan together.
“The adaptation planning
programme that we have
PHOTO: NEWSLINE
formally endorsed today is
based on the Ministry for the
Environment’s guidance and
puts community engagement
at the centre of our decisionmaking.”
The city council sessions will
give interested residents across
the district an opportunity to
learn more about the coastal
hazards adaptation planning
programme.
Spirit of Enderby first
to use new berth
LYTTELTON’S new $67
million cruise ship berth
was meant to be vessel
empty for a while – until
Spirit of Enderby arrived
on Monday.
The Christchurchbased
Heritage Expeditions
flagship has claimed
the honour of being the
first cruise ship to berth at
the new facility.
The berth will be officially
opened next Wednesday.
Covid-19 will mean cruise
ships arriving in Lyttelton will be
scare, if non-existent, until the
pandemic is over.
But the Spirit of Enderby was
a welcome insight of what is to
come.
Lyttelton Port Company
engagement and sustainability
general manager Phil de Joux
said he was not expecting the
berth would be used by a cruise
ship so soon.
The port was also busy at the
moment so having the new berth
was helping ease congestion.
“We’ve been looking at other
uses for it … a Korean Antarctic
research ship will be using it
next week but at the moment we
actually have quite a bit of berth
HONOUR: The Spirit of Enderby was
the first ship to use Lyttelton’s new
cruise liner berth.
congestion in our inner harbour,
so it will be good,” said de Joux.
De Joux said that in spite of the
dampener Covid-19 had put on
the cruise industry, he was proud
his team was able to finish the
berth on time and on budget.
“We are nearly at the end of five
years of reconstruction now following
the earthquakes. It is the
end of an era and it is a great asset
for the future.”
The Spirit of Enderby sailed
directly from Vladivostok in
eastern Russia and the crew have
been in isolation for 44 days.
Russian crew members received
another Covid-19 test on Monday
morning and have to remain on
the ship for now.
The 50-passenger ship will sail
to Invercargill to pick up its first
passengers on November 24 for a
Kiwi-only cruise.
