Construct your own college degree at MMC with a
major in Interdisciplinary Studies. Each IDS program is
individualized, self-designed, and boundary-crossing—
an exact fit for your interests. Do sound design with
technical know-how and insights from the study of
music and poetry. Make films about environmental
sustainability, drawing upon your knowledge of science,
history, and international development. Examine the
psychology and sociology of fan fiction writers. The
possibilities are endless. As an IDS major, you will work

CREATIVE
WRITING (BFA)
What better place in the world to be a writer than New
York City? In the Creative Writing major, compose
poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in workshop-based
courses. It’s all about the process: from creative spark to
draft, revision, submission, and publication. Publish your
work in MMC’s student-produced literary journal, The
Carson Review.

Two concentrations:
WORLD LITERATURE CONCENTRATION
The World Literature concentration at MMC goes beyond
the usual reading lists with its global, cross-cultural
approach. Develop superior critical reading and writing
skills as you analyze, interpret, discuss, and debate the
meaning of compelling texts, classic and contemporary.
Hone the crafts of research and teaching while working in
partnership with faculty mentors.
LITERATURE AND MEDIA
CONCENTRATION Within the Literature and Media
concentration, the classic inspires the cutting edge; text
transforms into contemporary media. This is WLL’s home
for budding filmmakers, video documentarians, longform
journalists, fan fiction writers, and social media
practitioners who bring literary sensibilities to their
work. Produce and contribute to MMC’s online student
magazine TwoTwoOne (twotwoone.nyc).

The innovative program in International Studies at MMC puts the
pressing issues of our time in global perspective. Focus on regions,
governments, international relations, human rights, development, and
sustainability, all against the backdrop of culture and economics. Then
travel the world through our study abroad programs or gain concrete
experience right here in New York City: the MMC United Nations
Program offers qualified juniors and seniors a full-time, semester-long
professional immersion at the UN, working with non-governmental

HISTORY
The past is very much our
present: HIST at MMC
History has traditionally been a go-to major for undergraduates who
want to understand themselves and their world in context. Where we
are now—and where we’re headed—is embedded in history. This is
still the spirit of the major at MMC, but our interdisciplinary program
puts you in charge of the exploration. Mix and match courses from 23
available “areas of inquiry” to tailor a program to your exact historical
interests. Our innovative program teaches the fundamental skills that the
History major is known for—analyzing sources, evaluating evidence, and
constructing effective written and oral arguments—but it changes the
game by placing you at the center of the inquiry.

POLITICS AND
HUMAN RIGHTS
The significance of social change,
strategies of social justice: PHR
at MMC
Politics and Human Rights majors at MMC fuse creativity with
critical inquiry. Students study the production and transformation of
culture, politics, and social life with an eye towards problem-solving
inequalities. The program expands from foundational social and
political texts to emphasize racial justice, queer theory, and the
role of arts and culture in social movements and broad processes
of social change. Excursions in NYC, well-placed internships, and
faculty-led travel experiences will get you out of the classroom to
engage the many dimensions and dilemmas of human rights, power,
citizenry, and social action. Seniors complete a capstone thesis
of original research and analysis that matches their aspirations
and demonstrates their preparation in theory, historical context,
methods, and social practice.
As a result of their education at MMC, PHR majors are ready for
graduate study and careers in government, law, local and international
arts and social justice non-profits, and charitablefoundations, as well as
in the fields of journalism, public health, social ecology, and education.
