EXEMPLAR OF PEACE AND CONCORDBoth Bernard and Norbert worked hard for the reform of the Churchand religious life. Bernard of Clairvaux and the Cistercians wererevolutionizing the monastic world with a stern return to theprimitive Rule of Benedict, and Norbert of Xanten was leading amovement to improve the lives of the parish clergy. With Bernardconcentrating on the monks and Norbert emphasizing the parish clergy,the times witnessed a resurgence of the Christian spirit, which wasbeneficial to the Church and world alike.Bernard wrote of his time spent in Norbert’s company, “I was honoredin being permitted to drink in words from his mouth, as it were froma sweet-toned flute.” Norbert also held Bernard in high esteem and thelife of the Cistercians had a great influence on Prémontré. As evidenceof his high regard for Norbert’s order, St. Bernard wrote to the Queenof Jerusalem in 1142:“It would be as unnecessary aspresumptuous, perhaps, for me tosay much in commendation of thesebrethren of Prémontré, for they socommend themselves by their ownmerit that they have no need to becommended by another. They willbe found, if I mistake not, to bemen of wisdom, fervent in spirit,patient in tribulation, powerful inword and work.They have put on the whole armor ofGod and have girded themselves withthe sword of the Spirit, which is theWord of God, not against flesh andblood, but against spiritual wickednessin high places.”
